He is a great Professor, engages with the class and he does have a lot of reading, but he also includes lecture that is not boring.
Awesome Professor! This is a great and empowering course. You must read all material assigned and engage in class discussions. Teaches with passion.
This is what a Chicana/o should be like. There are a couple of lazy-bodies in this department and Mendoza puts them to shame. This guy knows his material, presents+engages w/ the class that is interesting. He makes you read alot, but the content is worthwhile. Hope he becomes a full-time teacher!
He is a great teacher, fun. strict a lot of reading and journals, quiz at begining of every class. do all his work and you get a easy A. fun! oh make sure you read!!!! took him in the summer.
If you expect this class to be chill and laid back this is not the class for you!!! This class requires a lot of reading and each reading requires discussion journals and there will be a research essay that's 4-6 pages. Attendance is mandatory and you MUST buy your textbooks or else you won't survive.
sets the bar high but makes it fun with creative projects and group work
He is one of the toughest professors I've had.
He is one of the best Chicano studies teacher I've had. He is very nice and his lectures are interesting, he may be a tough grader, but he helps you improve your skills. I actually didn't think his class was hard, just do the work and you'll be fine
The best professor I have had thus far. Extremely recommend his classes our educational system needs more professors like him. I wish he can become a full time professor. Inspirational and challenging.
Exceptional professor.
Professor Mendoza is probably one of the best teachers I have ever had. He actually enjoys his job and really engages the class into the lectures. From taking his class I have learned so many things. He does assign a lot of work but if you do it you should be fine. I would recommend him to anyone. If you're looking for an easy class this isn't it.
This professor is far by the worse professor I had ever taken. He goes thru his lectures real quick, doesn't wait for you to write down the notes. He's a tough grader. Doesn't care about personal problems. I wouldn't recommend this class if your trying to get an easy pass.
He is a tough grader. Doesn't make sense most of the time. He goes too fast with power points, and he doesn't let you take notes from any device. He only wants you to write by hand not even caring how long his slides are. Also not letting you finish writing down the notes. I would definitely not recommend if your trying to get an easy pass.
This was an amazing class! The professor covered so much important stuff about contemporary issues, changed my view on so many things and really helps open your eyes. There is a lot of reading and writing and he expects hard work and participation but because he really cares that the class learns and can do critical thinking.
He's an ok professor, but I wouldn't take again because it's Just too much information to keep track of. I asked him if he can give us his notes but he said no, and said he wants us to write them instead, which I respected him for that. His lectures are good but I myself couldn't keep track of them.
When he asked if anyone had questions everyone stayed quiet.
Extraordinary professor. Really enjoy taking this class. I have taken this professor more than once, which shows how much I enjoy his classes. Recommend this professor to anyone who wants to learn and does not mind being challenged.
I took Mr. Mendoza's class at LA Valley college but he is was one of the best teachers I have ever taken. I am not surprised by some of the comments that say he is hard, he is also one of the most difficult teachers I have ever had. I learned so so so much though. I recommend him if you actually want to learn, but avoid his class if your lazy.
Hard class but was a cool Profe. Can tell he really cares.
I think this profe is either love him/hate him, with the haters being because of laziness. I agree with other comments that hes really hard and pushes students but I also agree it's because you can tell he really cares, and some students didn't like having to take notes and read and actually study, just wanted easy grade. Great teacher.
I enjoyed this class because the professor would tell refreshing stories which relate to the course. There weren't many lectures, except for the first 2-3 classes. We had a lot of group projects which made work more do-able. It is true that he is a tough grader but I would take his class again since I found it extremely interesting.
Such a passionate teacher! If you really want to learn take Mendoza but don't expect an easy A. He assigns a lot of reading throughout the semester and a fair amount of homework, there's one midterm, a final, and a few random short reading quizzes. This class was challenging but also inspirational and a lot of fun. I'd highly recommend!
Awesome Professor.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He genuinely cares about his students and, although his class is challenging, it will prepare you to become a better student. With that said, laziness is not tolerated, as this course consists of three 500 word essays, a 1250 word final essay, and online quizzes in between. I would take it again though.
He will make you work in groups which helps getting through the class.
By far the best and most understanding professor I've ever had. Right away, you can tell Prof Mendoza has a true passion for teaching and his students. Well spoken and will gladly address any question you have. Class is lecture heavy and does require a lot of daily reading, but if you stay on top of that, you'll be just fine.
This professor made me want to major in Chicano Studies. I learned more in his class than I have in any other class at ELAC. He is inspiring.
Pretty good professor. He makes you do a lot of reading but if you stay on top of things you should be good. Can't really cruise that class. Online discussion posts, online tests, and 2 essays: Midterm and final. WORK WORK WORK for that grade. He is helpful too
Best Profe at ELAC. Because of his class I am a better student. Take him if you're willing to put in the work, and you wont regret it!
He will change your world perspective. I didn't know what to expect from a Chicano Studies class, but after taking Professor Mendoza I can truly say I am inspired to become more critical and active in my community. I really was able to get to know him in office hours. He was very helpful.
i was first intimidated to take him because i heard he gives alot of work, but IT WAS ALL WORTH IT. there is work to be done, and its not an easy A but Mendoza gives you a new perspecpective of things and society that opens your eyes and mind to so many things. he appriciates student participation and his lessons are always intresting
Do not take him. Worst professor ever. He talks a lot and does not let you express your thoughts on the lecture if you disagree with him.
Ruben Mendoza is very thorough in his teaching. There is really nothing that he teaches thats unclear. Most of what he lectures is what you read about. Its important to be in class, because he does give lots of information. He gives most of what he expects in writing requests and what would be on exams. All his tests are open book and online.
best teacher at south gate. highly recommend.
Great professor. He changed my way of thinking about the world and school. He really cares and always pushing student to do better and go to university and he's so helpful. Not easy but worth it because you learn alot and he makes sure you are ready for transfer.
Professor, or as he likes to be called Profe Mendoza was an excellent professor. His way of speaking with a small sense of humor gives you the impression that he's not there to bore you but genuinely wants to grasp your attention. His lectures are very interesting. Arrive, pay attention and interact with him, do your homework, and you will pass.
literally the best professor at south gate campus. mendoza is the first professor i have felt inspired by and can honestly say that his class has changed my life.
He's a great professor took him in the fall for Chicano 02 and again in the spring for Chicano 44. there's a lot of reading but nothing you can't handle he responds to every emails and has office hours. His quizzes are pretty easy if you read what he's asking his midterm and final are both essays in which they go hand and hand.a great mentor
Amazing! Amazing Amazing! You will come out a better student after taking his class. He's strict, organized, passionate, genuinely caring, respectful and very approachable. A lot of reading and analytical writing. Highly recommend his class! Bravo Profe Mendoza!
Professor Mendoza is a very outstanding teacher at ELAC. He is organized, supportive, and passionate. He's not only a great teacher but also a great human being. If you really are interested in learning about Chicano Studies or want to have a clear picture about it, definitely take it with him. Warning! Simply showing up won't cut it!
Hes the best professor ive had! At first i was only taking this class for credit, I wasnt interested at all. but he makes things interesting! now im taking another chicano class, sadly its not with him. he makes us do a lot of work but honestly its worth it.
Mendoza is very engaging. He is one of the best professors at ELAC and handsome! No falling asleep in his class ;)
Prof. Mendoza is passionate about his work & it shows during his lectures, class discussions, & office hours. I appreciated his focus on the lit. produced by womxn (Lorna Dee Cervantes, Anzaldúa, & Moraga). If you want to learn more about what it means to be Chicanx and the history behind the past & current landscape of LA, take this course.
If you are trying to learn many things, this is the course and professor to take. He is so dedicated to educating others it is inspiring. He truly cares about your learning outcome and will help you beyond what other professors will. One of the best educators I have ever had.
Professor Mendoza is by far the best professor I've taken! He is passionate when it comes to helping his student succeed. Elac definitely needs more professors like him! I strongly recommend his class if you're looking for a university-like class and if you want to practice your critical thinking and writing skills.
Do not take his class if you are not ready to read every week. You have to take quizzes and write discussions weekly. Mid term and final are essays. Hes picky about the format also. You cant miss class more than 3 hours or he will drop you. He doesnt accept any late assignments even if its a minute late!! No extra credit either.
toughest class i have taken yet i am honored to have been taught by him!
What an amazing and inspiring class given by none other than Profe Mendoza. A well known respected Professor at the ELAC campus. His powerful lectures are incredibly moving and motivates you to be the change for our Chicano community. I recommend for every student to take his course. You will not regret it, It was truly an honor!
Professor Mendoza knows his material well, the class itself was interesting but DEFINITELY makes you work for your grade. Attendance is mandatory and you need to be on time. The class was made up of heavy lectures, 3-4 movies and readings. If you do not read you will not pass (online discussions and quizzes weekly) Cheap box required.
Profe Mendoza is a very passionate educator. His class was very interesting and insightful. You must attend class or you will be dropped. You must also pay attention in class or he will call you out on it. No electronics at all. 1-2 quizzes + discussion post every week on readings that are 10-30 pages long. Lots of reading. Overall great class!
this professor is so easy. i got an A
i took this professor fall 2018 AND I GOT AN EASY A
If you're interested in Chicano Studies and analyzing films, this class is a must! For every film there are questions you must answer in a discussion post, readings are assigned weekly, and more than likely the lecture in class will be connected to both the film and readings. Participation & attendance are a must, don't miss class unless necessary.
WOW, this Professor was AMAZING. HE GETS DEEP AND INFORMS YOU ABOUT THIS CLASS. if you are trying to get to know the Chicano/Mexican culture, TAKE IT HIGHLY RECOMMEND VERY INSPIRING YOU WILL BE WOKE AFTER THIS CLASS BUT DEFINITELY PUT IN THE WORK AND DO HIS ASSIGNMENTS
Professor Mendoza really knows his stuff and made it so interesting to learn Chicano history from him. Attendance does matter in his class and you should make sure to take good notes during the lectures. He gives 4 reading responses throughout the semester, which are all based on the readings. You really do get the grade you deserve in this class.
His work was way to dificult considering it's a Chicano class. It's passable as long as you keep up with your work. I had to focus on his class above all others and I was taking English, poli sci, and a speech.
Even though he is a tough Professor, he cares for his students and wants them to learn as much as possible while you are in his class.
I took this class for 5 weeks in summer. The book is needed to answer worksheets. He puts in a separate grade for participation. Tests are worth 100 points. He provides study guides prior to them with 6 questions that you would've already answered. There are also lots of links in modules to help prepare for exam & discussions. Great lectures.
Professor Mendoza is really great. He really goes in depth with his lectures and even beyond what you are learning about. Make sure you do the reading as the assignments given are based on them. As long as you keep up with the lectures and assignments, you will be good.
Professor Mendoza is honestly really great!! He makes the lectures really interesting and I learned so much from him. I wish classes were in person because I would've enjoyed sitting in one of his classes. He made us watch movies and videos which were all interesting. The quizzes and exams are based on all the material he gives us.
At first prof. Mendoza seems intimidating, but really he's just the nices guy. He really cares for his students and their success. His work is challenging but if you do the reading and attend the class you'll get it. He is strict about turning in work on time, but this only helped me manage my time and be responsible for finishing a task on time.
Dr. Mendoza is honestly one of the best Chicano teacher from ELAC. I wish I could of taken his in person class, instead of online... There's a lot of reading to do for this course but honestly all he has you read is very informative and interesting literature. Id recommend his class to any student who actually wants to learn Chicano history;
Honestly one of the best teachers Ive ever had when it comes to history studies, though his lectures are pretty heavy and honestly very slow, the work is manageable and the book we have to read is actually a very interesting and eye-opening. Discussions are very useful when it comes to the exams, gives good feedback and his class is very good.
To be honest, taking this class is no easy feat. There is a lot of reading and writing. It operates more like an English class. But I am glad that he did so because my reading comprehension and writing skills have improved drastically by the end of the course. The readings he gives are very interesting and I especially enjoy the lecture videos
I took Professor Mendoza's class during the winter semester which meant it was a 16 wk class condensed to 5 weeks. There is a lot of reading but all the readings are interesting, so I really enjoyed them. He was very easy to schedule office hours with (via zoom). I hope to take another one of his classes in the future.
I took it as a 5-week course, HW M-Th, no late work, and no EC. Grades strictly & operates like an English class, you must read all links, book, watch lectures, and write detailed responses every time with plenty quotes. He is there to help and responds quickly though. It's all interesting, just a ton of work, not an easy A without putting in work.
Great class! Took it during the summer (5 weeks) so it was pretty intense and time consuming. There's a lot of lectures and readings for this class, but if you manage your time correctly you'll get through it. No extra credit or redo's. He is easy to get in contact with and really helps you out if you are confused on anything.
Took this class during the summer, a span of 5 weeks and it was pretty intense. It's a interesting class overall and I would take it again. It is lecture and reading heavy but if you know how to manage your time you'll get a good grade. He gives good feedback on assignments and is easy to get in contact with if you need help with assignments!
His (pre-recorded) lectures make me want to fall asleep. In each video, he sounds almost as if he's whining about society's issues. On the positive side, this is the "hardest" GE I've taken at CC. I wish that more professors would've had similar teaching mechanisms that make students feel rewarded for the hard work they put in. Take this class!
Dr. Mendoza is by far one of the best professors I have had the pleasure to learn from. He is real, passionate, and understanding. Be prepared to read a lot of interesting, eye-opening material. Not only does he instruct Chic Stud, but is also very versed in English. Helped me write better essays. Follow his critiques and you'll do fine, I promise.
First and foremost, this course is a university-level course and Dr. Mendoza will instruct it as such. Dr. Mendoza is super chill & lectures are very informative. He WANTS you to pass, so he will give you any information you need to succeed in his course and beyond. All you need to do is listen and ask questions. The reading is eye-opening.
I understand the good reviews as he is a good lecturer. The topics are interesting. But he has a poor attitude and poor character. He does not make lectures available to students, and he does NOT accept late work. There are more compassionate professors than him. A little grace doesnt hurt anyone except this professor. As a student of 2 years.
There was so many policies that were non-sense, he would count the minutes after you go to the restroom (more than 5 minutes counts as a tardy), ATTENDANCE MATTERS! My grade was a High B dropped down to basically a F, caught a stomach-flu but it didn't matter to professor. Honestly unbelievable. Whatever good reviews to float his boat.
Cool class, lots of reading + working in groups whole semester. Quizzes based on readings. Participation matters in this class. Big group presentation at end of semester + final essay. Overall great professor just get ready to work and don't be shy in class
Took him for the summer and just expect alot of reading and work in a span of 5 weeks. He makes assignments from M-TH if you're a last min person this class isn't for you. He gives certain feedback and sometimes doesn't but he's very strict on plagiarism so please don't use any Al bots. Though class was somewhat interesting about the Chicano issues
The 5-week course is fast-paced and will test your will if you take another course. Prof Mendoza's course is an eye-opener and engaging. There will be a lot to read/watch (textbook, articles, movies, shorts) used to answer essay questions and responses. WORK WITH CLASSMATES! Participation matters from day 1! Will take his Lit class later.
HORRIBLE!!!! I had an A in the class throughout the semester. When it came to Finals, he falsely accused me of using AI on one of my essay responses. When I tried to reach out to discus thi manner, he totally blew me away. o in other words if he "THINKS" you used AI, which I didnt, that it for you.
Professor Mendoza's coursework ties together so beautifully and by the end of the class you are able to understand the Queer Chicana experience through a new perspective. He really pushed me to expect more of myself and to be a better student. Thanks to Professor Mendoza I applied to a school I thought I wasn't good enough for and got in!
He makes his class so difficult to pass, if he's not going to let students pass he might as well go to high school and teach because we don't need this in college.
I took this as a 8 weeks so maybe that's why it was so crazy. 5hours of hw every single day, quiz every single day and a small essay every week. I actually started loosing hair from the stress. On the bright side he gives plenty of time for tests which I appreciated a lot. If you're not ready for this class to take up all your time do not take it.
This class was hard, alot of reading and writing. I had to work hard to earn a B, but. I learned alot and you can tell he cares and wants you to do good. I would have got an A but I skipped some readings and couldn't answer a couple of exam questions, so that kind of shows how the class is. As long as you put in the work I think you will be ok.
In this class I found myself with an imposter syndrome- being first generation Mexican American. I learned about the rich Mexican history that has been faded out of main media and efforts made in the Chicano movement to bring light and demand justice/ change to the discrimination Anglo-American propaganda has subjected Chicanos throughout history.
Nothing to say. Bad professor.
I've taken a bunch of classes but every week I learned something new. His class lets you look at history from a totally different perspective and ties into why a bunch of political stuff is happening today. There's a ton of reading & several essays. Don't use ChatGPT to write your essays, he WILL know and boot you from the class.
There's A LOT of READING required for the tough homework discussions and two exams. If you complete all the readings and pay attention to what he wants, you'll pass. Direct quotes are essential for both homework and exams. Lectures can be boring, but are informative. You can use previous work for the exam questions. Discussion replies are required.
challenging class with a lot of readings, there's no extra credit and no makeup work it's definitely not easy, but your grade will reflect the effort put into the class. Overall, this is a great class I learned so much about Chicanas/os you can tell the professor is passionate I highly recommend to anyone who wants a new outlook on life and society
One of the best professors i've ever had, very caring, passionate, and will quickly reply to messages if you need help on assignments. Although there is no extra credit/make up assignments, he gives PLENTY of time/days to make sure you do the assignments on time which i think is very fair. Provides helpful feedback too, highly recommend - Kim S.
Before taking this class I hated myself and was very embarrassed of my roots but Professor Mendoza helped me be proud of who I was through his lectures and motivated me to keep pursuing higher education. It's a hard class but fair. If you want an easy A look elsewhere, but if you truly want to learn about Chicanas/os and grow then take him! -Andy
Professor Mendoza is one of the best professors I have taken so far. His class was not as easy, definitely do not leave anything last minute or miss any class if you can, your grade reflects your work! His class was very interesting and informative and opened my eyes to the Chicana/o history. Highly recommend him, he really cares for what he does.
This will be the most honest review you see here. As someone who got a B+ in his class, it was horrible. SO many assignments, and don't get me started on the amount of reading you do. There are also so many lectures you have to watch and take notes on. This class was the worst class I've taken, the professor is chill but isn't a good teacher.
Feedback is a joke. Instead of teaching a concept, he likes to talk about himself and your response must align with his perspective. He criticizes Chicano famous attorney and activist Oscar Acosta and ALL his lectures provide very little reference to the assignments. Is very condescending.
Maybe he's different w online but for my in person 7AM class, he was nice. Do every assignment and every reading, you can get a B. Decent amount of work. Strict attendance/electronics/no makeups. Likes office hours. Easy lectures. This is all coming from an over achiever extrovert…who only took one class this semester. Take that into consideration.
He doesn't get to the point!! He tends to overexplain a subject when he hasn't even gotten to the point. All I hear is blah blah blah. He is one of those professors. BTW he doesn't give extra credit, which honestly sounds like he's praying for your downfall...
