Is extremely unclear. He is friendly, and more than easy to talk to. He will do his best to try and make you understand things, but he is slightly limited by the fact that he is too smart for the material and doesn't relate it well to someone who has no clue. Parra tells you exactly what wants (for the most part) but most people choose not to take advantage of it. How much you learn in his class is completely dependent on you which is what college is all about. He provides the tools to actually learn but he also leaves open space where you can still pass even if you aren't the greatest at the subject.

Dr. Parra is my most favorite professor I ever took at DePaul. Whenever I would ask for guidance, he would always help me with a smile and cared about my success. He makes you work for your grade which motivates you to do your best. Do his practice tests and read the book! Go to office hours and you will pass!

Dr. Parra is a true inspiration. It is thanks to him and his support that I was able to succeed in this course. He did not create a stressful environment like other chem professors do and he provided helpful resources that would help you pass the exams. He was always welcoming students in office hours and would get excited to see them succeed!

The majority of the lab was watching videos and then just being handed data. A lot of the labs also tended to be just talking about the lab reports which got a little boring at points. Overall, a really confusing course with not very good communication.

Had him for e-learning. Hardest class Ive ever taken, he lectures for hours on end, but you still dont learn anything. He teaches you how to learn from the book instead. Go to his office hours and hell explain things more in depth, so thats helpful. Hes a nice guy and wants students to succeed, the subject itself is just difficult.

One of the worst professors that I have ever had when it comes to e-learning. Professor Parra is not accommodating at all. His class is very lecture heavy and even when he lectures for hours on end you don't really learn anything. His homework is not helpful because even if they are repeatable he does not tell you what you got wrong and right.

Dr. Parra is an amazing professor! I have never had such a caring professor who really wants his students to succeed. Those who put low ratings likely didnt use all of the resources that Dr. Parra gave us to help us succeed. He was always available outside of class to help explain things in further detail & he posted extra practice assignments .

Dr. Parra is one to say he cares greatly, which he does but not in the way he says. He is by no means an easy grader, though he says he is. The grading criteria is skewed and blurry. If you don't know how to format a Lab Report to his liking... good luck. A lab report is due every week. Instructions are not clear in explanation or writing.

Dr Parra was really nice and really tried to help and be nice but would in turn be an inanely tough grader and definitely had favorites. I definitely regret having him as an instructor and think my grade would've been much better if I had someone different.

Parra just reads off of the textbook during the lectures, which is something we can do. When you ask him for help, he refers you to the textbook, instead of actually helping you through it. Even if you tell him you have read the textbook and still having trouble, he will state that you have not read it "clearly enough". Would not take him again!

Dr. Parra is a great professor who cares about his students! The people who gave him low marks likely didn’t attend office hours or ask him questions one-on-one. If you are concerned about a lab, you can have him review it before a final submission. Make sure to read and attend all lectures.

had him for che131 and he tbh was not bad at all. idk y he has such bad ratings. hes kinda strict grader but if u go to office hours he'll tell you exactly how to write lab reports and i ended up with As. be careful abt formatting and little details cuz he takes pts off for petty things. other than that, pretty helpful during labs and a nice guy.

He's not terrible, he "teaches" from the book and gives you a plan of how to pass the class (it's how I passed) from the beginning. Start the h/w early (its difficult) but it helps w/ exam. Exams are mostly MC 3-4 free response. MC is from h/w and he sometimes gives the answers in class. Not good at teaching but is helpful. Sig figs!

When I had covid-19. I notified Ruben Parra and even got the Dean of Students to send him a personal e-mail stating I would have to miss one Lab. He still gave me an absence putting me at risk for an F. He made a student take their final exam in the ICU hospital bed. Truly a horrible human being who does not correspond to the values of DePaul.

I honestly don't understand his rating because he was my favorite chem professor at DePaul so far. His lectures in class are very similar to what you will see on the exam, which has not been the case for ANY other professor I have had so far at DePaul. His tests are not a surprise, it is very similar content to the lecture and homework.

Dr. Parra is a sweet person, but as a professor, I would not recommend him. He is a very tough grader, and his lectures are just him reading straight from the textbook. I learned more sitting in my dorm teaching myself by reading the textbook and going through the examples in my own than I did from his lectures.

He does stuff differently than other professors in the chemistry department. With the way I learn, he did not help me that much, but I was still able to learn all the concepts even if my final grade was not desirable. I loved Dr. Parra so I'm not sure why he has such bad ratings. He gives A LOT of practice on d2l which for me was usually harder than the exams. Many people didn't do the practice until last minute which is why I think people struggled in his class. There are no surprises on his tests and they were easier than the other gen chem 1 classes.

He has a semi-thick accent, but he is very nice and wants to see students succeed. However the homework is heavy, 3 assignments per chapter, 3 chapters per exam, and the assignments take at least an hour, and don't let you know what you got wrong if there are multiple blanks. I feel like there is no consideration for other classes.

Dr. Parra believes in the success of his students, going as far as to assume we'll be curing cancer in his lab. He is an insanely strict grader compared to other profs. He gives long (40-45 min) pre-lab lectures that repeat the manual, which many find useless, though it might help those who didn't prepare. Expect 4-6 hours of homework per week.
