He was a good teacher but he went into a lot of detailed explanations that we didn't even need to know... so you spend half your life studying stuff that won't even be on the test. He's too overqualified for his job... His teachings go beyond the scope of Bio 2. He's a good guy though and very nice.
He is a very nice man and gives you solid, worthy tips if you think you are not scoring high enough. Study his powerpoints back and forth, use the book to fill in "empty" spots, and please don't stress over his own notes. Exam 3 average:86%! And he always gives study guides and 6 pts bonus! Exams are multiple choice, matching, and true and false.
Just stick to the powerpoints and book. He likes giving plenty of outside info as "notes", copy em down for fun if you want because you don't need them. The exams are easy if you know your stuff, and study guides prepare you well. I learned a lot in this class. He tells us what to expect for MCAT, so his class is GREAT preparation for medschool.
Although what he did teach seems like it will be helpful for when I take the MCAT, he pretty much skips over everything but human biology. I'm not sure if we'll need to know the stuff he skipped, but it worries me. Otherwise, he's okay, a bit boring and gives unnecessary details about things not on the test.
Dr.Ramirez is a very nice man, the information he go through during class are useful. And he usually give hints for the test, the difficulty of the test are average. Just read through his slides as much as you can. Pay attention to the underline words.
He is average teacher, If you read the textbook tou will do great on his exams, and he gives bonus questions. He gives a lot of extra material in his lecture that you rarely see on his tests so you overstudy, but overall this is not a bad class to take provided you study.
If you go to class and read the book, you'll do fine. He's got a lovely voice, but his accent was very hard for me to understand. That coupled with some horrific handwriting, made going to class seem pointless sometimes. Interesting professor though!
I think the easiness rating is higher than it should, probably due to the pre-med kids acting all tough. It was a difficult class and it takes effort, more than merely reading the book these days. I was a TA and made an A+.
Interesting class and Dr. Ramirez is highly knowledgeable. Always be studying for this class. There is a lot of material to study but not all of it will show up on the exam. Your best bet is to study everything.
I studied a week before exams and still barley made C's and sometimes B's on the exams. You literally need to know ALL the details to do well. I am usually an A / B student and this class really frustrated me. I felt like the tests were really not testing our knowledge of the topic but rather our ability to pick up small details wouldn't recommend.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! I have an above average GPA and taking this class with this professor ruined my GPA! i have taken bio1 and did just fine. but this professor was really something. i studied the book and the powerpoints like 2 weeks in advance nd still ended up with a C- in his class! DO NOT TAKE HIM IF U WANT A GOOD GRADE! take him if u wanna FAIL
Theres no point in studying for his class. you'll still fail. i literally studied 2-3 WEEKS in advance and still failed. so yeah.
Very interesting course! Averages were rather low due to the fact that more than half of the class did not attend lecture (ahem...freshmen). Dr. Ramirez adds on to the textbook during lecture and the extra material is frequently seen on exams. Making a good grade in this course requires reading the textbook and actually understanding the material.
Compared to ochem, this class is nothing! Ramirez is a really nice guy - been to his office hours before, easy to approach after class. Filled with lots of knowledge - knows EVERYTHING bio. Funny guy and always greeted me when I bumped to him outside of class. Take notes during lecture (I can recall that second exam was mainly based on his notes).
He randomly assigns point values to certain bits of information.5 mins of class time might turn into 10% of a test. This shifts your focus from understanding the concepts to memorizing everything you can so you don't miss that little fact that counts for tons of points on the test. Always come to the sessions/do the quizzes: they are vital 4 grades
An MD!!! Wants his students to succeed; nice guy and very smart guy with lots of experience. Difficult course and very detailed. Exams are not only based on knowledge, but application. Most people complained about memorizing little details, but if they're bio majors/pre-med, shouldn't they have to? Gonna have to learn it sooner or later for MCAT.
Hard course, study book like heck, not the useless powerpoints. Prof isn't helpful but bumps grade up if you prove to him you are working hard. I ended up with an A because he bumped my final grade up a few points, but DO NOT ask/beg him for grade bumps, its most sure way you won't get one. Study hard.
Amazingly genius man and nice guy!!! Exams are only tough because you must understand all the material forwards and backwards. Do not ask/beg/cry for grade bumps. You have to earn your grade in this class. I personally would not recommend this class for non-majors.
Very hard professior, if you could take this class somewhere else do that. Grade only depends on tests and practicals. Very hard to make an A. Have to study like no other. Had no life when I took this course. BIG MISTAKE!
this class needs lots of studying. you CAN NOT wait for the last mins to start studying for the test. dont need to study the book at all. just know the power point slides. which are a lot btw. he doesn't curve the test, but the online quizes are easy and you can take them twice. better grade out of two try will be the final grade for the quiz.
Contrary to what everyone else is saying, his lecture exams are fair. If you study hard and make connections in the concepts, you'll do well. If you study mindlessly, you won't. The way he asks questions will prepare you for professional school really well.
Dr. Ramirez is one of my favorite and most inspiring professors. He shares his medical experiences with his students during lecture. If you plan on taking the MCAT, I highly recommend taking him. Most students complain about his class because they are not willing to study thoroughly for his exams. It is definitely possible to make a good grade.
His tests are doable but plan to study weeks in advance but still make a B. He runs out of class after its over so you can't even ask him a question. Try to go to his office hrs? Plan on waiting an hour only to find out his office hours are over. I made a B- in the class by the graces of god. I would have made an A- if i wasnt in Kohlers lab. No curves no matter how the class does. He only reads off powerpoints no point in going to class read the book 100 times maybe youll pass the test.
Overall, he is a very knowledgeable professor. His tests are fair and detailed. Pretty funny guy in lecture
The class is tough but an A is achievable. Dr. Ramirez assumes everyone in the class is pre-med, and he likes to challenge everyone as such. Lectures are pretty much optional, I personally got more out of reading the book for 3 hours instead of attending the 3 hour lecture. Know the book, memorize the book, and read it once more just to be safe.
He is a good professor but his tests are tough. The first 2 exams were purely based on concepts more than just knowing "stuff", so be sure to understand everything by going over his slides and also reading book. The last 2 exams were a bit easier because what you need to study is information and not learn about concepts like in the first exam.
When a class is this stringent, all semester is spent stressing out than actually learning. Labs are more daunting than actually necessary. Considering prof schools hit us hard with Anatomy anyway, what is the need to make this class incorrigible? Dr.Ramirez is knowledgeable but he belongs in an area other than teaching. Strict No No for sure!
Kind of hard to understand with accent. Doesn't write his own tests and doesn't give them back to study. Rushes through material and tests over EXTREME details. Very fast paced class, too in-depth for introductory bio. take another professor.
Don't...
A&P I is a hard class no matter who the professor is. Dr. Ramirez is trying to give his students a small taste of what medical school is like, which is no walk in the park. I've been a B student all my life, but i managed to get an A for this class. You can do it if you really want it.
If you want to simulate Medical School before going there, look no further. Don't be surprised with a D grade if you didn't study 3 hours daily JUST for lecture and another 4 hours daily for lab. Tests are doable if you worship the book. Labs will wreck you even if you're right. Majority of the class got a C- or below. DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR CREDIT!!
Honestly, I was expecting to do great in this class but that didn't happen. He's brilliant, but tough. His tests are doable, but the practicals are RIDICULOUS. Class average was a 40, and no curve. So I'm not even sure I'll pass even though I've passed all the exams. This is a class you need to work hard on.
great lectures
The tests were 100 questions and he expects you to know all the little details and literally everything single word in the book regardless of whether he discusses them in lecture. Studied 3-4 hrs/ week for lecture and a lot more before the exams and managed to receive an A+.
The lab practicals weren't that bad, take pictures of the models and you'll do fine. The hardest is practical 2 (bone and muscle) but that's as bad as it gets. The hardest exam in lecture is exam 3 (the brain). Besides that, reading the book is the key to an A. Exam questions come directly from the book with a few from concepts mentioned in class.
Be ready to take side notes on your lecture slides/ tests are detailed and tough/ Couldn't get an A by cramming/ great lectures but too much information per session/ prepares you to become a future physician/ gives great advices/ has good stories
Dr. Ramirez is a great teacher . A&P is a class that requires a large time commitment to get a good grade. Many people complain that the practicals and tests are too hard, but the reality is that alot of people get A's in this class and if you read the book, go to class and lab, and spend time reviewing material the class is straightforward.
Nice professor, but HARD class. Exams are hard. Practicals are hard. Prepare to work like never before. Read each chapter once, twice, 20 times if you can. I've heard that grad school Anatomy is a bit easier.
Avoid this class if you can. He was extremely rude to students and humiliated them. He checked ids before each lecture, if you dont have your id you get kicked out in front of everyone and he laughs at you once youre gone. Lectures sucked. He teaches as if youre already and MD like him. Get ready to read ALOT. 3 hours of class with him sucked
you cannot cram in this class at all! be prepared to spend hours understanding the material and being able to apply it to every little detail on his 100 question exams. He goes through his powerpoints really fast during lecture so i would recommend reading ahead of time to even have a grasp and keep up with him. the lab practicals were ridiculous.
This class was so DIFFICULT. Hes is very smart, but he expects you to know every single detail in the book. You literally have to memorize it. The tests are 100 questions and you have little time to complete so you have to use it wisely. The practicals are hard too. This class alone is a part time job. If possible take it somewhere else.
Honestly makes the class more difficult than it should be. He can hardly explain things while stuttering every 10 words with The-ahh The-ahh The-ahh. I understand he wants us to learn but the things he presents in his exams are no where to be found in the textbook nor the slides he posts. People get good grades through other methods. Very ironic...
Has good intentions but doesn't really execute those good intentions well. Lectures are confusing and not really that helpful for his exams (100 questions, no curve). I don't despise this man or anything but his teaching styles leave a lot to be desired. I am positive there are more effective approaches and ways to teach this course.
Grade Killer! Didn't explain in detail but his tests are totally confusing. Even he didn't give enough time for the test. If possible take A@P in community colleges because it will cost far less than UTD and university class size is so large more than 150 students. Ridiculous!
Dr. Ramirez is a great professor who speaks with more than enough enthusiasm to keep you awake for the 3-hour lectures. The material in both lecture and lab is immensely interesting. Studying directly from the textbook is necessary. I would suggest reading the chapter before class so that you can just sit and absorb the admittedly dense lectures.
Dr. R knows the material, but does a poor job at teaching it. His lectures are over saturated with information that you don't really need for the class, but he'll tell you that you need it for the tests. Be ready to memorize the entire book and maybe, only maybe, pass the tests. He also asks questions he never discussed or are nowhere in the book.
Dr. Ramirez is very passionate about the subject, but he's also very hard to understand because of his accent and how fast paced this class is. He likes to draw diagrams in class to help you understand things better though. Be prepared to sit in a 3 hour long lecture once a week followed by a 3 hour lab.
Dr. Ramirez is one of the worst professors I've ever had. His 3hr lectures were quite unbalanced in regards to the level of detail tested on his exams. Sometimes he'd take 2 min explaining a topic that would mean 20 exam questions or spent 20 minutes on one that would correspond to only 3 exam questions. If you can, take another instructor.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. Lecture is excruciatingly boring and irrelevant to what is tested on exams. Exams focused on minute details that he never mentioned a single time in class. I showed up to every class and listened to him ramble on for 3 hours every week. Condescending and rude. Do not take his class if it all possible
Wow, this prof is so bad. Doesnt teach during labs. literally walks out and makes you learn on your own for 3 hours. During lecture he rushes through everything, skipping through slides while trying to decide what to read off his PowerPoints. Ive had to teach myself everything in this class because this man is seriously incapable of teaching.
Dr. Ramirez is a wonderful professor. The class work seems to be hard, but it is doable. Make sure to start preparing for the test ahead of time by reading the textbook. This will assure an A in the class. I really enjoyed taking his class
Do not take this class unless you have a ton of free time. He treats this class like if it's med school level, obviously some students cannot dedicate 10+hours a week to study this one class, and an additional 5+ hours for lab, when they have other classes, work, etc. His drop rate is almost half for a reason. He should not be the only AP1 option
He's kind and knows his stuff, unfortunately he's a awful professor. His study guides and lectures are him just stating for you to know absolutely everything. Occasionally, he'll tell you what to focus on more, but overall there is no direction to this class. My best test score was the one where I read the chapters 3 times, its overwhelming.
Up until Fall 2018 you were able to take AP2 without this class. Its unfortunate that UTD forces you to now take this awful class before you can get credits for A&P2. Dont fall for it. Take A&P 1 and 2 elsewhere in the summer and take other science classes to graduate from utd. You've been warned, this class sets you up for failure.
I had Dr. Ramirez for Bio and A&P in undergrad. His class was hard, but now in med school I am grateful for Dr. Ramirez. He teaches near the level of med school (volume of material being the main difference), and he expects you to put in the work like med schools will. The bio foundation he gave me absolutely made the transition smoother.
Dr. Ramirez knows the material well, and he does a fairly good job at lecturing it. The problem is he uses this mindset of you having to know everything in the chapters (literally everything) instead of giving you direction on what exactly he's testing you for. Good model for people going to med school, but that's not everyone who's taking A&P1
If Ramirez is your only option, and you are taking this class over this Summer or Fall, I suggest you start reading right now, honestly. I just don't get why UTD still employs this man. He might know his stuff but is horrible at lecturing it! He's all over the place and will test you on microscopic details! I wish he'd teach with the same intensity
Oof. Honestly, I'm disappointed that A&P was taught the way it was. Dr. Ramirez's lectures drag on and on, and his exams have trivia-like questions rather than big picture concepts. Content wise, lectures were not helpful and were somewhat disorganized. The second lab practical was outright painful. Super condescending as well. Do not recommend
His class is ridiculously hard mainly because he DOESN'T explain things coherently and will tell you to know EVERYTHING. There is also the issue of a language barrier, which prevents him from explaining things concisely. Ohh he'll take 30 min to tell you how to fill in the exam scantron and tell you that if you fail, it's all on you and not him.
WOW. I have always enjoyed A&P but he literally killed my passion for it. Lectures are pointless- SUPER disorganized. I tried very hard, read every chapter, and really put in effort, but his exams are nothing I have ever seen before. So tricky for no reason! Online HW and quizzes don't really help your grade either. Get ready to feel rlly defeated!
Make sure to do well on the first 3 tests because the last test is impossible. To put it in perspective, the average for the last test was 67 with the curve. He will test over minute details he discusses in class so also make sure to listen during the lecture. Be ready for this class to be a full-time job.
The worst prof I've had at UTD. He was unpleasant to interact with in office hours and steered me away from enjoying A&P. Lectures were hard to listen to and his exams are unfair. Kinda regret taking this class
Dr. Ramirez is a friendly guy, however he seems to take pride in how hard his class is. Class is unorganized. In lecture he'll talk about how we have to connected everything together, but most test questions are over very specific and trivial things. Do not take this class unless you have a lot of free time to study and read the chapters.
This class is difficult but it's doable if you have a plan. This is no exaggeration, the only way to get an A or just simply pass is to 1)read the ENTIRE chapter from the book before class, 2)go to lecture (hes not the best lecturer), and 3)reread all the chapters before the exam usually 3 chapter. VERY time consuming, and this is just for lecture
Took this class in the spring 2019. Still upset because this man was rude and condescending. He took time out of our tests and lecture to demean and call out students in front of the class. Also, he's a terribly poor lecturer and his lectures do NOT cover the exam. You basically have to teach yourself everything. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!
Great Prof very high standard. A very overwhelming amount of material for an undergraduate elective class. Make more sense if the course covered the basics not full blow med school sim. test questions are very trivial. Hardest class ive ever taken A LOT of memorization. Be ready to prioritize this class and have no life if you want an A
The entire neuroanatomy course plus additional info is all in one practical exam what does that tell you about the course? NO EXTRA CREDIT and NO CURVE also spelling counts and practicals are fill in the blank and make up 30% of the final grade.
Not the best, but not the worst, For lecture he really is not a good lecturer, he scrambles and talks about A&P2 stuff in 1, however, he gives you ALL the information you need to get an A, it really is not impossible, but there is a LOT to study. Can be very rude, but it is better if you go to him during office hours to talk, instead of during lect
Class is difficult but can be doable. Recommend reading textbook chapters before class. While attendance isnt required go to lecture bc he does go over stuff you'll see on bonus questions and tells you what charts need to be memorized for the test. Re read chapters before each test and go over study guides. Is alot of memorization so be prepared.
The professor is amicable and very accessible, also knowledgeable and highly experienced- i loved that. Let's face it, anatomy is basically all memorization, so if you can do that you're good to go. Cons: the practicals are difficult and write-in answers; exams have some ambiguous questions; a lot to learn for just one exam (but it is anatomy,so).
Lecture is a snooze fest. Memorize the textbook for lecture, memorize everything for lab practicals. Tests are difficult.
Dr. Ramirez is a great teacher and he is very inspirational in terms of giving advice about attending a professional school after college. This class was challenging and you have to work hard for that A, but he makes it challenging for a reason! This is a great class to take.
You need to straight up memorize the textbook, theres no way around it. Powerpoints and lectures were not helpful. Textbook is your best friend.
Do not expect this class to be easy online. Dr. Ramirez expects you to remember LITERALLY all of the material he gives you. Emailed me an essay about he teaches concepts, yet tests on the most minute information. If you get something wrong, your fault! Says he tries to prepare you to be a good cliniciancompletely disagree. Beware of the last exam.
Honestly the test were way too close together, makes it impossible to not cram instead of taking your time since his exams are so close together, says he test on concepts but honestly is straight memorization, make sure you know every detail if you want an A, also no curves and regular grade scale.
Dr. Ramirez was by far one of the most unorganized and quite frankly rude professors I've ever had. He preaches about helping students do well in the future yet takes pride in how difficult and time consuming his course is. Tests do not cover major concepts but rather minute details in the book. Take a different professor or avoid this class.
Dr. Ramirez is inspiring as a medical professional, but teaches this undergraduate elective as if all of his students will also be conducting surgery and diagnosing patients in the next week. You must memorize every single piece of information which is said in class, in the slides, or in the textbook, ALL of it will be tested with trick questions.
Professor Ramirez uses mastering as a homework tool. In one week, there might be up to 10 assignments that deduct points for wrong answers, making them like a mini test. On the actual exams, the questions are trivial and pedantic. It seems he writes the tests to pinpoint the most useless information and use it as a weapon to fail his students.
Ramirez is the worst professor at UTD. I pity his future students; his class is one semester-long anxiety attack. Memorize EVERY minute detail of his lectures, as well as the textbook. I am convinced that he wants students to be miserable. This class shouldn't be as ridiculously impossible as he's made it. This class destroyed my excellent GPA.
Strict with grades, no curve despite difficulty and failing grades. Start studying at least 4-5 days in advance, memorize ppts. Hard, time consuming class but with enough time, an A is possible. Weekly assignments on mastering and elearning. Wish there was more emphasis not "all fair game". 4 lecture exams, 3 lab exams, and uses Honorlock.
I do not know what more to say other than how disappointed I am in this professor. Asking the most detailed questions on an exam is not testing our knowledge. His teaching is outdated and not useful. Quizzes and HW are easy As.
If you don't plan to attend a post secondary institution, i.e med school please stay away lol. While he's a good professor he's exams are unreal. Super hard. i know people in med school that say he's class is harder than some classes they're taking. Overall a good experience to prepare you for future classes.
This professor is like "You guys need to get the bigger picture. Understanding it is what matters, don't memorize just memorize" then test you on super detailed stuff that was on ONE sentence out of the 70 pages you have to read before an exam. How is asking dumb stuff like length of a specific cell useful in seeing if we understand the chapter???
There is so much to memorize in the class, and Ramirez does not care. He makes the exams difficult and tricky, the labs cover so much material, the tests cover so much material, I was reading the textbook twice over and still was struggling to finish the tests on time. The lab combined with the class feel like two separate classes of their own
All I can say is the lecture exams are manageable if you're aiming for a B or C, but the practical are brutal. Good luck trying to remember how something is SPELLED on the practical. The 1st practical is easy, but 2 and 3 are VERY HARD. Good luck to any premeds.
Maybe hes better in person but for an online class he sucks. Goes way too fast, especially when going over models that you cant access later. Less than a min per question on tests. Tests are super detailed and difficult. Its a lot of info to go over but he doesnt help much. Tough grader
Without a doubt the most brutally unfair class I've ever taken. No joke, I am doing worlds better in classes like O-Chem than I am in this class. His SEVEN tests all have an obscene amount of content to memorize, and he pretty much refuses to curve or make them easier. And the practicals are even worse! If you can avoid him, do it at all costs.
The secret to this class is to read the textbook before watching or attending his lectures. Just looking and studying the ppts will not help, his tests are very specific but you just need to put in the work. Doing practice questions to test your knowledge before the exams are also a great way to study. Put in the work, get an A. This class helps.
-You will not pass if you do not read the textbook (best to read before lecture). -He's a bad lecturer, moves way too fast and covers too much in one lecture. -Heavy on material, SO much material. Exam 3 alone is more material than my entire into to neuro class, ridiculous. -Test cover really small detailed things READ and MEMORIZE
Honestly, probably the worst professor with the worst grading system ever. Your grade (at least for my class this semester) is a combination of your lab exams and lecture exams. For your lecture grade, it takes into account your LAB EXAMS as well as your lecture exams, all of which totalling up to 90%. The remaining 10% is your homework and quizzes
I wish there was another professor I could take. The study guides are extremely extensive, several pages long. I did each & every question. Read the chapters, printed out the notes and go over them at least twice. Then take the exam and it would ask me the most specific questions. I hated this class & this professor. Avoid, avoid, avoid.
Difficult class for no reason. 7 exams total including the lab practicals. There is so much information to cover and exams dates are all close together. Barely enough time to prepare for the exam and get ready for the next one. Lectures are all prerecorded and TA reviews are useless. Most of the exams are based off specific information in the book
Took this class during junior year and am currently in med school. When taking it, hated it because of how much work it was. However, this class is single handedly the most useful class from undergrad you'll take in med school. So many relevant things that I breezed through because this class made me familiar with them. Highly recommend for premeds
The tests had SO MANY little details, which made them really, really difficult. It was my hardest class Ive taken at UTD but I feel that I actually learned a lot from it, not just information but study skill-wise. If you want to take it, though, make sure you do so during a light semester.
Be prepared for the most miserable semester of your life. Material isn't bad, but he intentionally finds ways to make exams impossible. He only teaches because seeing his students suffer is the one thing that feeds his enormous ego. Never seen an ego like his, apparently he's the only MD to ever exist. Awful professor, awful human being.
The class is pure endurance- during periods of no lecture exam always be vigilant and prep for the lab practical. Make sure you get all content from his lectures and the textbook- the study guides honestly are just a long way of saying " study everything". Harder application stuff is usually bonus on tests. Conceptualize THEN memorize is critical.
Medical Microbiology is one of the hardest classes I have taken. His exams are hard but doable. I think what made it worst for me is the time limit. You have to complete 80 questions in an hour, and I always ran out of time. He is a very smart and knowledgeable man but can come off as rude. He also does not respond to emails. Be ready to STUDY HARD
Well... you know it is going to be hard. 7 exams (90%) plus quiz and homework every week (10%). Practicals can help boost your grade. exams are detailed, know EVERYTHING! just know that it is possible to come out of this class with A. I did it and you can do it too. He is available outside of class so reach out to him if you need help. You got this!
I enjoyed this class! Anatomy is not easy, but his lectures were easy to follow, he's very straightforward on what he wants you to know, and I had no problem understanding concepts because he makes class more fun with his jokes and relating things to his experience as a doctor. You have to put in the work to get a good grade!
Thank God I got my A from this class and never have to listen to his boring lectures again! I was sick during my finals and all other professors gave me extensions except ramirez.I approached him and he said if I can't make it through the finals I have to file for incomplete. funny cause I could still get A with a 50 on my final.
He is by far the worst professor at UTD. He shows no sympathy to any situation a student might be in and is cruel in the way he test over things just to trip you up. Never take any courses with him
some people leave bad reviews because they never learned how to study and then this class exposes that flaw. Learn how to learn material before you take this class because just like med school its a truckload of information- and all of it is fair game. He's not unreasonable or unapproachable (unlike dejong). Work hard and you can score high
Dr. Ramirez is clearly very intelligent. However, every week, there were hundreds of slides to cover. The exams were detailed and required weeks of study in advance, but since there were many exams, you often wouldn't have enough time to study properly. You can get extra credit on the lab practical. Overall: very difficult course.
He is a pretty straight forward teacher. That's the only one perk about his class. Ppl think lacking good study habits always correlates to bad grades. That's not true. His ppts, are not enough to take his test. When you have 7 chptrs to study, where most of them will have over 200 slides, you wont find time to do anything else. His tests are hard!
Look, this class has a TON of material that requires the student to be on top of their studying. There are 2 exams, and 2 practicals, which make these grades high stakes. He has a passion for teaching and is definitely available outside class. However, the exams are unfairly hard. It's truly one of those you know it or you don't classes.
Dr. Ramirez, without a doubt, is one of the most brutal Biology department professors I have ever encountered. Instead of teaching and testing topics he deems important, the entire textbook is fair game for lecture exams, despite much of it not being covered in lecture. Good luck trying to study for any other classes as you study hundreds of pages.
Impossible to take this class if you're a full time student. Exams are heavy 80 questions in 1 hr. Over 6-7 lectures. Each lecture is about 30-50 slides. Lectures are heavy full of information. Its too much to memorize. He doesn't give review or hold review session. 14/31 passed. Save your self from this class and avoid hurting your GPA.
Dr. Ramirez was very straightforward from the beginning about what he expects from you. His lectures are easy to follow and he shares real life experiences to make the topics more interesting. The lab has extra credit options to boost your GPA.
The most difficult class I have taken at UTD, the lowest grade I have gotten. For this class, everything is fair game, lectures, textbook, homework, etc. The volume of it was intense. I'm not sure others are balancing. Exams are multiple choice, but that will not save you.
1. If you don't have concrete studying skills, don't take this course yet. 2. Don't miss a lecture. He presents material that is not included in his posted powerpoints, even though they are sometimes 200 slides long per week. 3. know each weeks material inside & out before the next lecture, or else you will be permanently behind. 4. textbook is bff
Hardest class I've taken so far. He really cares about getting you ready for med school so his tests are very detailed and require you to master a huge amount of information. Lectures are helpful on most days but are pretty fast-paced. To succeed, look at the material before lecture and get ready to run hundreds of Anki cards.
This class is amazing!! You'll learn A LOT! But in order to at least pass, you MUST attend lec; missing one class will hurt your exam for sure! Only 3 exams and a case study. Yes, he can be intimidating, but Dr. R genuinely cares about his students. If you approach him respectfully and show interest in learning, he'll help you and advise you well.
This was my most favorite but hardest class this semester. Prof. Ramirez is really passionate when teaching and wants us to be prepared in the healthcare field. Getting an A is very possible, but time-consuming. Your grades directly reflect the effort you put in. Please study/memorize the powerpoints each week and don't fall behind!
Professor Ramirez has really awesome lectures. He's obviously knowledgeable, and has some very cool insight for pre-med students. However, he assigns INSANE amounts of information to each exam. At one point, exam three encompassed over half of the 1,200 page textbook, plus all lecture material. He is super cool, but he will drown you in work.
He's one of the most brilliant professors I have ever had and very knowledgeable, but he is very difficult. I will say this straight off the bat, YOU CANNOT PROCRASTINATE FOR THIS CLASS!!. I have been a procrastinator my whole life, as bad as that may sound, but NOT THIS CLASS. He is also very caring and understanding professor, just go talk to him
Dr. Ramirez makes this class extremely difficult. The lectures are long and hard to digest. If he is running low on time, he will skip through 15 slides of powerpoints. Also, ALL powerpoint slides per chapter are over 100 slides and he usually does 1 ch per week. Exams are brutal. "Everything is fair game."
To do well in this course, you must stay on top of your work. The exams are not hard if you study well and early. Do not procrastinate otherwise you will do bad. You can get an A if you put in the effort. Pay attention in lectures, take good notes, go home and read the txtbk, and understand the material and you will do well.
Dr. Ramirez made this already difficult class more difficult. The exams are impossible! 3-hour lectures are rushed and unorganized. Rameriez constantly says the textbook is wrong, but will ask questions on the exams from the textbook. "everything is fair game" including random facts said in class.
He has a monotone tone and he rushes through his lectures, so you won't understand anything. "Everything is fair game" in his exams, so don't bother on asking him on what to study. Over a 100 slides to study a week and need to read the entire chapter on the textbook. Constantly says the book is wrong and his exams are brutal.
bad professor. very rude in class and does not grade with very good feedback. tests are too difficult and go over material that was not gone over in class. would not take again....
Unlike what other ppl said, his class is totally doable if you read textbook before class, go to class, and read them again after class. As long as you follow this routine you can get A+ for sure. I'm a bio major (which means exam 3, 4 materials quite new to me), but I did well on all 4 exams. Don't complain about how hard it is. Just study.
The course itself is very difficult, but doable if you keep up with studying and don't procrastinate. Dr. Ramirez was an okay professor, but he teaches extremely fast (200 slides in 3 hours). Slides and lectures are very long, but everything is fair game including the textbook and anything he mentions. Stay on top of things and you will be fine.
I took this over the summer and His exams were crazy but doable I guess it would be 400 slides for each exam, take this class with a easy semester and easy classes and not in summer
I really enjoy the way Dr. Ramirez teaches so I wanted to give a thank you to him for being so engaging and really caring about his students. Very difficult class because there's so much content, however very useful.
Dr. Ramirez's class is notoriously challenging, but engaging if you put in the work. Lectures cover a ton of material, so staying on top of the textbook and using tools like Unstuckstudy are key. Brutal exams, but the professor is caring and willing to help if you reach out.
Class itself is just memorization, if you have any sense of discipline you will be fine, just memorize the slides. The lecture can be boring since its too long, but he does give key info sometimes not on the slides that will be tested on so attend w/ coffee. overall literally just memorize, many students really overhyped this, my memory mid btw
He retired.
