she is really good. she loves to teach His V12 SHe gives a lot of extra credit and she helps a lot. the tests are easy if you put effort and read the book
she is fun and different
Professor Gamboa is absolutely amazing! She gave maybe 4 quizzes total. Midterm is to make an altar for Dia de los Muertos. Final is a book review. Super easy A but also extremely interesting class. She has a real passion for the subject and it shows. Would definitely take her again!
Great teacher, took the class expecting a lot of left wing referendum, but actually inspired me and instilled a pride in an identity as a chicano I didn't know I had. Didn't expect for me to have such a high interest in this class, but i looked forward it after a few days. Highly recomended.
Very passionate about the subject, and inspires that passion to to her students, would take the class again. Weekly homework, essay one page, and easy. If you don't get a passing grade its your fault.
Shes an amazing teacher! She relates very well with all of her students, talks to the them like people not like shes above them like most other educators. She is very into her lectures and is really into what the students have to say. I have learned so much from her in the time I was in her class. I highly recommend her.
Professor Gamboa is the best professor I've had to date. She is so helpful and inspirational. She teaches you things both inside and outside the classroom. I actually looked forward to going to each class. You wont regret taking her!!
She is Dynamic, Diligent, Dedicated, and Passionate instructor. There is Weekly Homework due, Easy Assigned Readings, and 3 Exams. She also gives out extra credit. Just do the work and attend class... easy A. And she can rap. I would totally take her again!!!
I liked her powerpoints. the hardest part for me was doing the summaries since I am not good at that. her grades are easy to attain but I needed to drop so I wouldn't have failed because of my grade I would of had I would of not passed. She is an awesome professor to much readiing.
Professor Gamboa is an amazing professor. I looked forward to going to class everyday. She is very passionate in what she teaches. Great class !
If you get there late might as well go home because you will not get points for the day. weird at first, comes from a family of "curanderos"? Curses to much. Does not reply to your emails.
Amazing Professor.
Great teacher! I always looked forward to her class. Her lectures were always interesting and eye opening. There are weekly chapter summaries, but are easy if you read. She is very interested in the opinions and thoughts of the students and wants her students to learn. Highly recommend! AMAZING teacher! She just became chair of Chicano Studies!
Great professor get ready to read, learn, and enjoy. There's mandatory summaries, I'm not a big fan of doing a lot of reading but she made it interesting because she explains her lectures. Take this class you won't regret it, the only think I dislike is that there's not enough Chicano classes where she could be teaching.

I took AES V22 in the summer, it was a 4 week class instead of 18. We had to read a chapter everyday and come in with notes on the chapter. We also had quizzes every other day or so, this summer class was everyday (M-Th). For the midterm and final, you wrote two essays. Professor Gamboa offers plenty of opportunities to do extra credit.
She has been the best History Professor I've ever taken, she's always making sure you actually know what were learning about. Super inspirational and Passionate about all subjects she talks about. Downside is that if you miss class you miss participation points.
Professor Gamboa is very inspirational and you can tell that she loves teaching. But, there are a lot of papers and class participation is a must. You need to read and most of the time the in class discussions are by groups. She also has a tendency to discuss current politics which is unnecessary and can be viewed as offensive to some. So be ready
Gamboa is hands down the best teacher I've ever had. She's well read, patient, and strives to make her class relevant to her students. There's homework due every class period, but it's never assigned just for its own sake; every reading bolsters what you learn in class. I'm really depressed my major doesn't fit in with more of her class.
There's too many good things to say about Gamboa and her class! I'm barely a Sophomore in college and I can already say that this is the best class I've ever taken. I took the class over the summer so everything was a bit fast. Still, I wouldn't miss the opportunity to take her class. I learned so much about my culture and I had so fun doing so!
She's my favorite professor at VC. She's very inspirational and keeps the course interesting. You won't regret taking her!
Professor Gamboa is a passionate woman. She knows her history about Chicanos. Taking her class made me appreciate my ethnicity, not that I wasn't. You must pay attention to the power-points and make sure to do the reading.
Gamboa is inspiring and caring.
Gamboa is amazing and I loved her intro to Chicano Studies class. At first I thought it was too hard but it's only because she wants us to really understand our history and learn from it. You will need the books that she tells you to get or else you will fail because our homework is based upon the books. One of the best professors at VC.
She is very passionate about her teachings. Although that can be great, it comes off as one sided because she teaches on her opinion. She is one of the toughest graders I have personally encountered. Even if you try your best on papers, you may still end up with a C. Her criteria isn't clear and the only thing you're graded on is ESSAYS, no exams.
Most amazing teacher Ive ever had !! This class should be mandatory, its so amazing!! Focus on Chicano studies was great!!
I took Gamboas class over the summer. Shes absolutely amazing and teaches you the reality of history! Her class should be mandatory. I loved her class so much, Im now adding Chicano studies as an minor! Take her class, you wont regret it! Shes also really funny. Her assignments are easy and she offers extra credit.
Professor Gamboa is an asset to Ventura College and the surrounding community. I took Gamboa's Intro to Chicano and Native American studies class. She is the reason why I changed my Major to Chicano/a studies. Watch out, her passion will light a fire inside you.
I took her for American studies. Let me tell you very passionate and shows the real side of the Native American history . We had 2 papers , One for the midterm and one for the final . Total of 4 pages each midterm paper . Not too bad in my opinion. One more thing a presentation in front of the class about a current even on Native Americans .
Professor Gamboa has passion for what she does. She really wants you to get deep into your history to value the sacrifices people have done for your rights. Do the readings, participate, and do your homework and you should be good.
Overall Great Teacher teaching the course with passion and motivates students to get involved with t he community. Only thing that bothers me is she pushes her extreme left political ideas and beliefs and influences them on her students. She swears immigration isnt a problem in this country.
Great professor. Shes passionate and makes her lectures interesting. I hate history classes & was dreading taking it but I loved it. Gives extra credit. We had to do 6 terns every week, 2 tests midterm and final, 2 projects. Like any history class you have to work but its worth it and the work isn't hard.
Awesome lectures, very passionate about the course. Mandatory attendance since powerpoint are not online. 6 vocab terms each week, mid-term & final, 2 projects. Wants students to step out of comfort zone & help out our community. Gives good feedback, e.c is available. Highly recommend taking Chicano Studies with her, best professor for this course!
You have 6 terms that have to be completed per week. A midterm, presentation, activism project and final. I didnt like that way she forces her extreme leftist viewpoints on her students and brain washes them to believe what she believes. She swears everybody is against Mexicans even today. If you want to be on her bad side take Starbucks
Literally the preacher at the school. Can convince you of everything makes you believe in the subject. If you can take it take it. Tests are a easy pass if you study. Presentation easy she has a good time.
Professor Gamboa is just fantastic! There are terms due every week and the text is captivating to read. She asks for participation and wants to hear every students thoughts. As I read some comments before mine some students might believe shes biased but shes not. She teaches history, situations that have been ignored or forgotten.
I had her for a four week summer class for Native American Studies. Overall a great class. I wish it wasn't at 8AM over summer but that is not her fault. I really enjoyed the class and was able to do extra credit which was nice. I ended up with a B in the class.
Professor Gamboa is very passionate about what she is teaching! She teaches with purpose and expects you to do your part. Attendance is mandatory, and you need the most current textbook. She gives opportunity for extra credit but, you have to work for it. She is a great Teacher and is a real asset to Ventura College!
I took professor gamboas class and wow such an amazing teacher , great person, very understanding respectful and ready to teach! Passionate about history and a real eye opener , I took her class in the summer it was alot of work but thats a part of summer courses but i passed with an A ! Be there and do the work youll love this class
Takes herself way too seriously. Readings and reading assignments due every single class. Acts like students have nothing else in their lives going on besides this class. If you're working and taking other classes don't bother.
Unlike any other history class ive ever taken! Material is super interesting and shes passionate about it. Yes, there is a lot of reading to do. She also makes you get involved in local organizations for the paper you have to write, but she just wants to inspire students to do more for their communities
She's a very passionate teacher about this particular subject which at times is great, but I think she in a way tries to make everyone see history her way. She counts attendance as a grade but if you skip class you won't miss anything. Do all the chapter terms, you'll pass. She drops people who don't do their work the first few weeks.
Professor Gamboa is amazing, she really opened my eyes. There's a homework assignment due every meeting based on the reading, but the assignments only take like 20 minutes. As long as you show up and do the work you should pass! She's very understanding, she may seem a little rough but she's great. You won't regret it!
Extremely caring and fun! Great professor. She really cares about her subject and has great personal experience to back it up. Very fun class!
She's full of herself. She is very narrow minded about the history she teaches and only sees one side. She believes if you aren't an activist you are a waste of breath. Shows no sympathy for her students. Assigns unrealistic assignments during COVID-19. Do yourself a favor and get a better teacher.
Probably the worst professor I've ever had. I took the accelerated online course, and she kept adding assignments in the middle of the week. In the last week of the class, she added 6 extra assignments on Wednesday, on top of the 5 assignments from Monday and the final project. Do NOT take her Summer course if you want to anything but homework 24/7
Took 4 week summer course. Very unorganized and inconsistent class. Some tests didn't test on material that it said it would. Most discussions consisted of watching and replying to 2 hour long movies. I could have learned a lot more in a much less time consuming way. Work load was very doable, just very frustrating class structure. READ THE BOOK.
Shes a great teacher really knowledgeable and will set you up for success to pass her class!
While Gamboa is passionate about wat she teaches, she confuses fact and opinion. She falsely states that Spanish colonialism is active and alive in the United States today. I do not like receiving a bias, opinionated history glittered with falsehoods. Half of the assignments are not available right away, giving you less time to do a week of work.
I took Gamboa's class for Intro to Chicano Studies and U.S. History Focused on Chicanos. Yes, there is 1 weekly assignment/reading & Midterm/Final Essay Is it hard? No! if you pay attention and take notes on the lectures/powerpoints DO YOUR WORK you will be good. The class is consistent but by the end of the day, you will actually learn & remember!
I don't understand how anyone could rate her as a 1. In my experience, she's been very understanding and accommodates your needs as long as you let her know ahead of time like you're supposed to. Her lectures are meaningful and eye-opening; some may say she's biased, but I feel like my entire grade school of learning history was biased until now.
Makes you join clubs like Mecha or visit organizations even though you've made it clear that you don't have time for it. She doesn't give you an option. Saged the classroom without asking anyone if they were allergic. Didn't even ask permission to sage incase it was against someones religion. Wouldn't take again or recommend.
Professor Gamboa's classes are amazing; she's so knowledgeable & loves to share her experiences. I've taken 3 classes with her already. I've learned so much in each of her classes. There is lots of reading but it's always pertinent and interesting. Lots of homework but so worth it!
Be ready to read aloootttt! Shes very inspiring and loves what she does . Makes you wanna be better!
While her lectures are mandatory, she makes false statements how colonialism is still alive in America and how Padre Serra was evil (he wasn't). She tends to have a thing against Trump supporters at VC. She even tried to make some of them look bad, only for her to look bad.
She is really passionate about the subject and makes sure the subject/topic is understood properly. Respects your feedback and helps you get through.
Really interesting course with great lectures! You do need to read the textbook as assignment questions are based on the reading. Only complaint is she often assigned 1+ hour documentaries to watch every week which got kind of boring after a while. She does talk about the effects of colonialism and current events today which I liked.
Make sure to purchase the books she assigns
She's generally a nice person, but the lectures were steeped in her opinions. Some weeks you have to watch over nine hours of media, and read multiple academic papers that are each twenty pages long, and then write a two page reflection on it. (Multiple of these a week). Not well paced. Important subject, but don't take if you have a busy schedule.
Loved her class would take any class, she is inspiring
Make sure to read every single line of the assigned readings and pay attention to the movies. The exams/quizzes will ask questions that are really specific. You will learn a lot wether you want to or not. Take good notes and find someone to trade notes with in case you may have missed something.
Gamboa is a nice person but assigns a lot of busy work. Her final and midterms consist of multiple long writing assignments/essays being due on the same day. At times it felt like she didn't put much thought or care into the class. Interesting class, but I did not like her teaching style and felt like her grading criteria wasn't always clear.
Gamboa has been one of the best teachers I have had in a very long time. She is super funny and really makes you want to be involved with other class mates. The readings and lectures are super interesting and informing. I absolutely recommend having her as a teacher.
Definitely cares about her students. Hard class but she was very passionate. Reading and assignment heavy! Don't procrastinate or you will fail 100%. Make friends to help you out. Put in the work for the grade you want. This class is gonna take up all your time. This class is a heavy workload she will drop you if you don't participate.
Participation matters. She is funny, and her lectures are fascinating and informative. Take notes on lectures to help you with some quizzes. She is understanding and also very helpful. There is lots of reading, but all the readings are so informative that you want to read more. She also gives some extra credit. I would take more classes with her.
Professor Gamboa is very straight forward with her grading. You have three assignments a week--a reflection, a quiz, and a discussion. They're very easy to complete and she offers a ton of great feedback. She's very kind, knowledgeable and caring.
assignments will be graded weeks if not months after they are submitted. A+ cherrypicker. Pay attention to both readings and lectures and you'll see how often she twists words. I agree with most of the things she said, however that doesn't mean she's not biased. Her class feels like if the IG story activists were put into one place.
AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! Huge favoritism issue. Doesn't bother with other students and cherry picks on her favorites. Doesn't make an effort to connect with students and consistently ignores important emails from those that aren't her favorites. Waste of time!!!!
So much homework it's crazy. For an intro class that isn't honors, you get approximately 5 assignments a week. Considering I have other classes, this workload is insane and absolutely awful. Would absolutely not take this class if I knew how she really was.
Awful attitude with her students. Rarely emails back and picks favorites often. Her constructive criticism are just jabs at your skills. Workload is so heavy I almost dropped this class. Knew a couple people that did because of it. Literally made one of her faculty members leave VC because of her attitude and terrible behavior.
DROP OUT IF YOU WANT TO LEARN ABOUT CHICANO STUDIES!!!!! So many assignments that it was just busy work after a week. I learned more about how to BS homework in a way that made her like it ans grade it high than anything important about Chicano studies. Literally made me hate learning about something I am so passionate about
I just felt that I couldn't catch up with her assignments and couldn't do the final so I dropped out of the class
Great teacher, but you must attend every class as this class is very lecture-heavy. No tests or quizzes! Every homework assignment there is dense reading material, but besides that genuinely easy class. Allows late work. Mid-term and final are not tests but easy projects. Great teacher very passionate highly recommended.
Assigns a lot of homework and readings, some homework you have to watch a 2-hour movie, and then answer some questions on top of readings. requires volunteer work as a grade, if you can't do it because life gets in the way she makes it difficult to give a different assignment. I would not recommend taking her class. find another intro instructor
She does not allow late work at all even in extenuating circumstances but takes a long time to grade, encourages to drop class right away before even discussing and lectures are not linear (not a specific topic week by week, kind of all over the place). Confusing, do not take unless you are an extremely independent student
Tons of spelling errors throughout her course yet grades you on spelling errors. Topics are vague and you have to jump through hurdles to ask her what she wants from a discussion or paper. She constantly changes ways she wants things done and the class is a new pointless requirement
She is the perfect professor for this course. If you're looking for an easy course and not really looking forward to learning about Chicanos and their struggles, this isn't the class for you. Professor Gamboa showed me that being Chicano is a reward and a blessings, and the fact that our people have made this far is a beautiful part of history.
I thought I loved this class, as the semester progressed, I hated it. She makes you read A TON. Doesn't really lecture and makes you get into groups and talk about HW readings. Makes you watch documentaries in class, sure some might like it but she isn't really teaching at all. Oh yeah, don't expect a reply to an email. Some quizzes, more projects.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Gamboa gives a ton of homework, lots of long readings and writings. One of the major projects involve volunteer work, so this class won't be great if you don't have time outside of school. The lectures are okay but she makes you do lots of group activities. She grades super late and doesn't respond to emails!
A lot of the quizzes had terrible grammar and incorrect spelling; some were so bad I couldn't even understand what the question was. She then decided to read us her poetry mid-lecture, which was quite profane. Paying for an education and getting a professor who uses class time to promote her music and poetry is quite disheartening.
If you have a lot of free time and space this is a great class for you there's lots of reading and quizzes. I have emailed her a few times I either didn't get a response back I usually got unfinished sentences and my name spelled wrong. At least for me I asked about a project and didn't get supportive responses I felt unsupported.
Was too hard and was giving too much work in just one week
Overall, good professor. Does have a lot of reading required to be done by the end of the week, but some can be interesting. She's a really cool person overall. Will watch lots of movies in class. Only issues I've had with her class are the finals. You will have to do 2 finals. A family tree and community justice project. Will have lots of research
Gamboa's class is very inspiring she's very passionate about Chicano studies and she really pulls you in during her lectures I would recommend taking her class just know that it is a lot of reading assignments but her class is really motivating.
Loved this course and teacher! I enjoyed learning about my culture. You can see how interested she is in every topic and how clearly she explains things. She has a few video discussions where you record yourself answering the discussions, but aside from that, I enjoyed these four weeks of the course. It's a lot of work, but it's manageable.
"Question 4: The *cite* of Norte Chico in Peru is so important because it. . . A: It is as old or older than the oldest pyramids of Egypt. B: It's were aliens gave knowledge to Native people and made them so sophisticated." I did not edit this at all. This is one of the many examples of poor spelling and questions that waste our time. Busywork.
Save yourself and don't take her class, there's a lot of reading in the course but that's not the problem it's the way she grades things.
Assigns more work during the week without mentioning she is adding more. Assigns work when you don't have class
Assigns way too much work throughout the week and only have 2 days to complete, also assigns work without any notice. Takes too long to grade assignments but likes to assign work out of no where?
I enjoyed learning about the subject; however, I didn't like her teaching style. It felt more like she was preaching her opinion rather than actually lecturing. Not a bad/hard class, just didn't enjoy the teaching style.
Don't take this prof if UNLESS you like to do lots of readings, big projects, or talking with others in your class. Beware of the labels Lecture where she basically confuses you on everything you know about how you label yourself. Pretty easy grader though and has a grace period on assignments.
