Very organized. Very intelligent. Class is not boring if intersted in subject
I wrote the comment above before he graded research papers. Nasty man, arrogant
Good professor, tries to challenge you with grading
Grades challengingly. But is a nice guy and knows very much
GREAT Prof, so intelligent, take notes and you will be fine. SO NICE!!
class is confussing, he is not very helpful, but does know his stuff
Easy, interesting class, You don't have to read because the final is open book and the midterms are take-home essays. Just take good notes in class
Awesome Prof. if you want to learn anything useful at UD take ALL his classes! Only Middle Eastern teacher on campus and he's brilliant so take advantage! Yey for Prof Rudi!
Soooo easy. I dont even take notes anymore. VERY smart. Knows like 12 languages and takes weekend trips to Iran. Very helpful if you go to him.
If you like history dont take this. You cover up to 10 civs in one day, and learn nothing. Very easy class though. 2 take home tests and take home final and a few short papers.
Class is alll lecture, but what u learn about is very interesting...the teacher doesnt affect the class in any way, if u like the material then u like the class. very nice guy, extremely smart, will help u with any question, enthusiastic
class is kinda pointless since you have only take-homes.He's nice and really smart though. The class structure is kinda unorganized, so if you don't like something, tell him, and it will most likely be changed.
Good prof! Very soft-spoken though. Will cut class early if people start packing up. If you read, lecture makes sense. Breezes through material. Tests and essays are take-home.
a fountain of knowledge. this guys knows his stuff. i guess it's sometimes hard to track all the names, places, etc. because the middle east is a subject that i knew little of prior to the course. i'm glad i took it though.
hated this class. dont take him ever
This is the most brilliant man I've ever met. He speaks like 9 languages. He really knows his subject area, but he doesn't make impossible tests. Take his classes.
Although he is very very smart and knows everything about Islamic history, he is really hard to understand and jumps from point to point. He is also very understanding about pushing back dates of papers and such.
Fabulous teacher in the subject of Islamic History. Knows more than any teacher at this school about this topic. Extremely knowledgable and helpful as well. Wants you to succeed and understand.

A wise man out of place at this university. Class is well explained and take home midterms make A's possible grades. Take this class - he is unbiast and brillant - i'm marry him for his intellect.
WORST TEACHER EVER !!!

wow....this man was sooooo boring. I fell asleep in teh front row. I am a history minor, and I wanted to shoot myself when he talked. Very monotone, and unexcited about his content area.
A man of great intellect and expertise in his subject field. He is very unbiased and tries to make sure you understand the concepts more than the hard facts. Take home exams are easy and discussion helped a lot as well. Too good for this university in my opinion.
biased Prof. ... doesnt and shouldnt be teaching something he doesnt know about !!!
Take good notes and go to his office hours.. this brillant man wont let you fail.. the take home are fair and so is grading - just dont plagerize - he has read every :)
Good, fair class that you don't have to attend.
the only thing that saves this prof is that he really will try to help you when you need it; you just have to take the initiative. don't expect any sort of clarity or organization in the course and he is BORING... though like i said, he's a very nice man.
he is a boring speaker.....we got ahead of schedule so he threatened to speak slower.
very disorganize, so even if you take notes, you won't understand them later...very boring, but nice guy...he knows alot about everything
Okay yeah he can b boring and u can switch entire cultures and centuries in 5 mins. But thats just bc he is a genius and has read so much. Beneath the muddled exterior lies a man of amazing intellect who speaks like 20 languages and he is really, really nice and helpful. Take a class with him because you are bound to get more out of it than u think
k.......this guy is sooo Biased !!i know more about islam than he does... for students who dont know anything about the subject--> would start thinking that everything he's saying is true..while its NOT !!!
The guy below me is a ****bag. Rudi is awesome, and nobody at this school knows more about ANYTHING than he does. I'm sorry if the FACTS presented in his class go against your beliefs, but go read a book or something.
This teacher is a genius. He does not deserve to be teaching at this school. He is one of the nicest teachers I have had.
Smartest man at UD. Somewhat boring and attendance mandatory. TA does grading but the tests are take-home essays right from text book which makes them extremely EASY! Great class.
no comment i could make can possibly do justice do how brilliant this professor truly is. he knows a lot, is very helpful, and has real world experience too. Definitely a great guy to take a class with
Knows a lot about his subject area which tends to make his lectures very in depth and for most of us boring. However, his grading is lienant and is aware that people have other classes and will move the schedule around to give people more time for papers.
Matthee is certainly an interesting professor. Very knowledgable, very cultured, somewhat scatterbrained. Lectures are dictated from his personal notes, which have, at times, been proven not 100% accurate during this small class. For Hist 380, grade depended solely on essay tests and final paper. If you're a good writer, you'll do well.
WORST PROF. EVER !! his information is not accurate at all... very bias , brings his own Perception into things and makes it seem like thats how things are..
Okay some of the people are right, he's scatterbrained. But I don't care, I love his classes. I learn so much and he'sreally cool. He's also like a language genius, I think he speaks like 40 or something lol. Take his class, you get something out of it, and he;s the only one at Del who teaches this.
The smartest person I have ever met in my life. He is incredibly knowledgeble about Islam, the Middle East, and the world in general. Remarks about him being biased or unfactual are simply wrong. Take good notes because you need them for the essays/final exam. I've taken several of his classes and he never ceases to amaze me with his intelligence.
The class is interesting, learned a lot. However, there is a 10 page paper. midterms (x2) and a final. The lectures are boring because he is soo boring but the information is interesting. Lots of work for 100 level class
RUDI IS THE MAN!
He's pretty cool and is quite possibly the smartest man alive. Encyclopedias wish they had Rudi Mathee knowledge. The material is usually dry, but some there's the occasional interesting lecture. There is a ton of information, but the way the class was set up (no in class tests), it really isn't necessary to know much of it.
Absolutely fascinating class. He's very absentminded, lost two of my papers but didn't blame me at all. He doesn't connect with his students, which was my only problem. Lectures can sometimes be boring, but the amount of information he gives is phenomenal. Completely opened my eyes about the Middle East. Final is open note/textbook.
I got my first B in this class out of college (all A's). Very frustrating considering the fact that I had put so much work into the class. Trust my advice: VOLUNTEER and do the summaries as early as possible. You get a ridiculous amount of points for during it, this is what killed my grade. The class is indeed hard, but just be sure to volunteer.
I loved the content. His handwriting is sometimes hard to read. You have to be able to take fast notes and you need to pay attention. The books he gives you are alright. He throws alot of names places and dates at you which all seemed to be important. I didnt do the reading but did fairly well on the essays which took awhile to figure out.
Incredibly knowledgeable about the Middle East. Its all good information, but its presented very quickly and you'll take a lot of notes. Gets boring sometimes, but not if you like the subject.
Not much work to do, just take-home essays and a final paper. He talks about a lot of different things at once and if you space out for 30 seconds you can get lost. Material seems harder than it really is. Can sound condescending at times, but he's a nice enough guy with a (really) dry sense of humor. By far the smartest professor at UD.
Really great teacher, knows everything about Islam and its obvious that he loves the material. Can be a bit dry at times but is overall very interesting and if you take notes in class the takehome tests are easy
Interesting class. Definitely knows what he's talking about. Extremely knowledgable on Middle Eastern history, but he can sometimes get a little boring. Take home tests are easy. Would definitely reccomend this class
His lectures are boring but you dont REALLY need to go to every class, just most. I got B's on the midterms and an A on the Final paper and got an A- in the class. Everything is take home--sooooo easy!!! Also the little summaries he makes you do in class are BS, i never did one and was fine, so dont bother with that.
I AM WARNING YOU: STAY AWAY : YOU WILL BE SORRY. 1. he is bias 2. he thinks he knows everything 3. he doesn't know how to grade. 4. he is boring even though the content is great 5. doesn't know how to teach. STAY AWAY
The final was hard. He is scatterbrained and does not present material in a way that is easy to take notes from. Make sure you study the material. Late me turn in a paper later and revise it. Very intelligent but not boastfull. Great prof and class.
terrible class. hes incredibly knowledgeable. too knowledgeable. he grades hard and expects you to know and love the subject as much as he does. research paper is 12 pages long, so unless you really like writing about islamic history, dont even consider this class. lectures are impossible to follow. AVOID THIS CLASS BY ALL MEANS
This class is awful. I am a junior with a 3.9 GPA and i got my first B- in this class. you have to write a 12 page research paper and he is a very hard grader! his teaching style is all over the place and very hard to follow. Do not take this class! It's not worth it!
I have gotten almost all A's In my schooling career and got a C- in Prof. Matthee's class, while working harder than I ever had in a class before. He's scatterbrained, and impossible to take notes from. You must be a top notch writer to please him even remotely. Does not connect well with the realistic needs students, expects perfection. AVOID.
Matthee is a great professor if you want to take the class. He loves the material so much that you become interested by the end. The 12-page research paper isn't bad at all - you can basically write it on anything. Not that hard of a grader either, as long as you know how to put a sentence together.
Dont take this course if you dont plan on showing up to class. attendance is not usually taken but sometimes he surprises you with a sign in sheet. The class doesnt require a whole lot of work as long as you show up to class and take VERY good notes. 2 take home midterms (2 essays), a research paper, and a final (in class essay.)
He's a very tough grader, with high standards. Does not show up to office hours and comes off as very condescending. I DO NOT recommend taking this class unless absolutely necessary. really dampened my interest in this class significantly. Definitely read the text and don't fall behind, it will help considerably.
This is by far the worst class I have ever taken at UD and the worst professor. He is impossible to take notes from and the assigned texts do not help. The take home exams were almost like research papers as I had very little notes from class applicable to the questions. The honors section is simply more work-not what an honors class should be.
Dr. Matthee is not that difficult, people make him sound horrible. Yes, his lectures are a bit dry, but if you take good notes you can basically copy them for your midterms and final (which are usually take-home). I never read the texts, just looked up relevant info for the midterm/final. The research paper is long but not too bad. I'd recommend
He has a thing or two to learn about keeping biased opinions OUT of historical lectures! Very insightful, very intelligent, profound, and intriguing, but also very wise in the ways of the world (meaning that he doesn't know much about religion, so he shouldn't talk about it as though he does). Seems arrogant, but if you're nice, then he will be too
Prof Matthee is extremely knowledgeable with regards to Middle Eastern History. His classes is fairly stress free because you don't really need to read the texts. Plus the tests were take home. Also one thing that'll make you succeed if you ever take his class: He grades based on content not on how well you write your paper or essays.
He's very sweet and helpful once you get to know him personally. Needs to work on his level of engagement with students, however. His lectures were often scattered, although intelligent. Wish he could have explained it in a more organized, coherent manner. I loved him, though! Insightful and open-minded person. I'd marry him if I could
His 1st semester at UMD. Very interesting if you like the subject. Easy take home mid-term. Take really detailed notes, bc he lets you use for mid-term. Attendance not enforced, but worth while. Expectations for papers not always clear, but if you ask he'll clarify. If you put any effort to attend class and do readings, you should get guaranteed A.
A very nice guy with a lot of knowledge but the class was too difficult for a 100 level. Take home midterm, which was nice, and the final exam was open note. However, a 15pg. research paper was over kill. The amount of reading assigned, while not nessecary, was too much. His lectures aren't structured and sometimes hard to follow.
Horrible at communicating, made doing assignments difficult. Wouldn't respond to e-mails, hardly ever available to meet with. One bad grade brought me from an A-/B+ to a C. Don't take.
Way too hard for a 100 level class!!! His lectures are all over the place and his monotone voice doesn't help. It's a little better if you go to office hours, but he has an attitude. He is INCREDIBLY knowledgeable of the Middle East because he lived there for years. But avoid this class. The textbook is useless. The only exams are take home essays
He's very knowledgeable in the Middle Eastern History, but definitely not in Islam. He's very helpful, but his method of examining is not. If you work for an A, with luck, you'll probably get a B.
expects 400 level papers in a 100 level course, expectations aren't clear, unhelpful during office hours, no respect for students, lectures are useless, poorly organized, all the exams are papers. all the papers are open note. He is a smart guy, just an awful professor
He has a lot of knowledge about the Middle Eastern History, but I noticed him frequently confusing basic info about Islam. It's hard for a 100 level, but if you're really interested in the topic, this course is very helpful. No grading scale; no studying guide; you'd have to read and write like a graduate student; almost impossible to get an A.
Unrealistic writing expectations for papers regardless of class level. Unclear in questions, uses unnecessary amount of words to post question and to sound smart. He is a smart guy who is very invested in his field of study but expect sizable knowledge on topic from students even in introductory courses. No online grading.
He is very disorganized and his lectures are hard to follow
Do not EVER take this class. I personally have never gotten below an A on a paper (both in high school and in college) and Rudi Matthee could not find a single thing he liked about my papers. You're graded on three papers and a final (also a paper). He is by far the most condescending, rude, disrespectful professor I have ever had. DO NOT TAKE.
I wouldn't take this class if you don't have to. I found lectures to be boring and non stimulating. Material on Islam made class hard to follow, espec. with names and Arabic words. Graded on 2 midterms (1000 c. each), a 12 page term paper, and a 1000 c. final. Didn't take notes all year, got B's on all my papers. Not the worst class but unenjoyable
This a great class to take if you just need an easy breadth. I'm personally very interested in Islamic history but lectures become boring if you're not. There are very few grades 2 1,000 c. midterms, one 3,000 c. term paper, and a 1,000 c. final. Prof. Matthee is a lenient grader as long as you follow his writing criteria.
Dr. Matthee is incredibly passionate and knowledgeable about this course. He takes attendance each class, but it is very enjoyable. The papers are hard because the prompts he provides are vague and he wants very specific details on the papers (three small one, one research paper). You can definitely improve, so do not get discouraged. I recommend!
Professor Matthee is a sweet man, but his lectures are a little disorganized and not entirely chronological. Prior knowledge of middle eastern history is helpful, but not necessary. He is always willing to clarify and super passionate about the subject. Only grades are papers, which are leniently graded as long as he can see that you tried.
Dr. Matthee is arguably one of the most knowledgable professors at UD which can be intimidating at times especially if you have no prior knowledge of the Middle East. However, he is extremely accessible for help and is open to questions during lectures. 4-5 total papers make up the course. Would definitely take again.
Long lectures
Prof. Matthee is honestly a knowledgeable person. He posts his lectures on Canvas but does take attendance. As a stem major this class was a lot of work for the essays but don't bother reading or getting the book. Lectures are interesting and take good notes you'll be set for the essays
Great lecturer, expects participation but is laid back in person. The guy has serious knowledge of the subject. His assignments are different than most history papers, and involve a lot more actual analysis of historians than assignments from other professors.
Very knowledgeable professor with an interesting class. Only grades are 2 1000 word papers and 1 twelve-page term paper, but he's not an overly tough grader. Main downside is that he can be very condescending at times to students who ask questions, but he is a good lecturer and willing to explain through confusion. His tone just...could be better.
he knows a lot but the class is only based on two 1000 word essays and a paper which can make or break your grade. i took it as a gen ed but it was a lot of work and I rlly don't recommend the class unless you like the subject
Only grades by a few assignments + participation. Three papers (two 5 page papers and a 12 page research paper), although he's not a very tough grader. Very knowledgable on the subject and open to well constructed and thoughtful questions. Would recommend.
Dr. Matthee is incredibly knowledgeable and qualified about all things Middle East. He does a great job explaining the things that have happened during the conflict. Problem is that you are only graded by three papers, he assigns a lot of reading (you don't have to do it to understand), the slides are too full, and he has a slight Palestinian bias.
Dr. Matthee is clearly very knowledgeable about his subject. He also clearly does not understand societal norms nor how to give actual feedback. The class is graded on 3 papers, none of which have a rubric or guide whatsoever. I've never received more rude and disrespectful feedback in my entire school career. Absolutely astonishing.
very knowledgable on the course content, but don't take this if you need an easy breadth. assignments are two 1000 word papers that he did not grade harshly, but we have a 12 page research paper due that he is absolutely no help on. cannot work canvas, and is condescending in his tone when students ask questions or get things wrong.
