Best math teacher at this school!
very nice person, very helpful to students. Will give extra help.
Terrible teacher, not recommended!
Tough teacher for lower math. Better at the higher, more complicated levels.
Mr. Gunawan is the most artistic math instructor I have had so for. Mostly for his visalization skills, Mr. Gunawan has a great talent for projecting mathematical ideas and models onto the blackboard. The best instructor to have for taking multivariabe!
He was very caring and interested in students' success. A very understanding teacher for those not good at math but willing to work hard.
This guy is an excellent teacher. If you follow his examples in class you will ace the tests. Not only does he know his mathematics, this guy is the best I have ever seen at drawing 3d graphs and pictures. His art skills are truly amazing. He is also a very nice guy on top of it all.
such a great teacher. he was so clear and thourough. hes so easy to understand, everyone who has a difficult time with math should definitely take one of his classes. he shows you the right way to do things and makes math not confusing.
I thought he was very easy to follow, offered extra help after-hours... even learned my name.
he is very clear when he teaches, he wasts no time getting the information into your brain, super helpful outside of class, and also very realxed
Best math teacher I have ever had, bar none. Very clear, no confusion over assignments, what is expected, etc. I actually got to enjoy math for a quarter.
I fell asleep in his class. He went off on rabbit trails quite frequently. He did give everything you needed to know for a test beforehand. I prefer not to take any more classes from him.
Haha, Gunawan carries his yardstick around wherever he goes. I'm not joking. Like, see him in the halls, and he'll have his trusty yardstick by his side. As a teacher, he takes alot of time to draw every graph perfectly on the board, which is tedious, and he moves through material very fast..just do the assignments out of the book and dont slack!
So friendly, yet so precise and matter-of-fact. His drawings and handwriting are unbelievably perfect! He truly, truly cares about all students and will help out at all costs. Tough material though.
GREATEST TEACHER!!! I have ever had. He cares about every student and is more than willing to help outside of class. He uses a yardstick for each of his graphs but he does this with such precision and speed that it does not take away from his lecture time. As long as you do the assigned problem sets you should have no problem getting an A.
He was the best math teacher I have ever had. He is such a caring and wonderful man. I unfortunately don't have him for math anymore, and haven't for quite awhile, but he is always so nice and willing to help if you have a question. He cares about you as a student and really wants you to succeed! Take from him if you can!!
He's not the best teacher that teaches multivariable, he's the ONLY teacher. But he is a pretty cool teacher. He's not as easy as Harras, neither as lost as Cripe. He's got these trick questions on the exams though. If you're in 224 he expects you to remember all the crap from 124 and above which is the only con and he assigns problem sets/projects
In my opinion, Rudy is the best math teacher at Spokane Falls. He is very organized, and his handwriting is excellent!! He makes you work for your grade, but I learned a lot. He also gave extra credit. I would definitely take another class from him!
Good instructor but- no extra credit! Grades entirely dependent on five chapter tests and the final. I recommend the math lab course, this instructor is often available for assistance.
He's by far the best math teacher I've ever had. He's not an easy grader and tests are hard, but he explains the subject so well it makes them easier. Definitely recommend him, especially if you hate math.
I have always hated Math, but it was probably my favorite class when I took it with Rudy for 92 and 99. He's so helpful and such a good teacher. It's not easy, but you actually learn!!
Ok professor. He definitely knows his stuff, but often assumes you know more than you actually do. Assigns problem sets that contain some of the hardest and most time consuming questions, but definitely sharpen your skills. He often says something different than what he puts on the board.
Gunawan is the best math teacher ever. He explained everything so clearly and answered any questions you had. He went over everything that would be on the test. Super easy and pleasent teacher. I would suggest him to anyone. :D
I've never seen an instructor work as hard for his students as he does. He's really available and explains everything clearly and thoroughly. I'm not good in math, but I would take math from him anytime!
RUDY is excellent at starting at the beginning for a new concept and going over it step by step. He will remind you of a past material while explaining new stuff just help you get the new material. Kind of quiet in his class, he doesn't mind TOO many questions. really knows how to explain, even examples on board very helpful. Hard tests tho!
What the heck? This class was HORRIBLE! I mean he was a nice guy and all but only grades on TESTS. ONLINE tests!Stay far far away if you are not good at math. More than 60% of my class failed. Im not joking either. Stay away!!
A great teacher. The Online quizzes are difficult but you have unlimited times to retake it before the deadline. The tests weren't that difficult, and he told you exactly what kind of problems would be on there. No homework but you have to be responsible. He explains with clarity how to do the math problems. People only failed because of skipping.
I'll be honest... 2 + 2 = FISH to me. I HATE math. However this man works very hard for his students when asked. If you don't know something, don't be scared to ask "I'm too stupid to understand this, help?" This class is for the dogged and the stubborn. All tests are online, and he ONLY grades on these test scores. Good luck.
If you like Rudy, try taking Calculus from him. I took that class and he's basically a talking textbook, if you ask him to clarify, it's like pushing the "repeat" button. He won't dumb things down/ use real-life examples. He's anal when grading tests; if you forget to write a symbol or don't show every single step, you won't "earn" all your points.
I love Rudy, he is my first college math teacher and really fits the part. I have him for precalc, and it is definitely difficult but I really feel that I learn the material. He is more than willing to take questions after school. However, it's the one class I've had where the "2 hours of homework for every hour of class" holds true. Worth it!
Rudy is the best math teacher I have had at the falls. He wants his students to succeed and will do whatever to help you. I highly recommend him!!
Rudy's a great teacher. he has his own sense of humor with his little math jokes. he is a very precise man and has tough problem sets as well as exams. but if you do the homework he assigns( not for a grade) and remember the equations you will do fine on the tests and do well overall. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF GROUPS ON PROBLEM SETS WAAAYY EASIER!!!
Sweetest guy you will ever meet, really cared about his students succeeding. Learned everyone's names and set aside plenty of time for students to come in for extra help. Having said that his class was extremely difficult and the problem sets were borderline impossible. But if you put in the effort he will be the perfect teacher.
Great person. Genuinely cares about his students. Class was a little tough on me, but I'm no math major. Final was hard. That being said, Rudy is good person and teacher. His graphs are impeccable, and some of it rubbed off on me, which is a good thing. I find myself using my ruler on my homework and scratch paper :)
I did not complete this class as I to many other issues to contend with. With that said, Rudy is a very good teacher. He doesn't pull his punches, so expect that you will have to learn this difficult material. If you are accustomed to the usual Comm college professor, understand that he is not the norm. He demands your best imo.
I have had Rudy multiple times. He is a good teacher with incredible graphs. GROUP UP ON PROBLEM SETS. USE ONLINE RESOURCES IF YOU CAN'T SOLVE SOMETHING after an hour. Seriously, don't waste your weekends on a single problem like I have. DO ALL ODDS in EVERY SECTION. He sometimes uses problems straight out of a section. Good Luck, Learn it all
His tests always consist of clear-cut examples of the material, and contain little in the way of 'curve balls'. His problem sets are not cake walks, but are reasonable if you have a solid understanding of the material. He's always willing to help students. You WILL be expected to behave like an adult and both show up on time, and submit HW on time.
he is a well educated man, is very strict and prompt. But he should not be teaching, does not clarify, impolite, no sense of woory for the student, and if you ask him a question he will walk up to the bored and say,"so and so asked this, and this is how you solve it" very bad instructor ovoid him when taking math...
Mr. Gunawan is a nice man. Some students seemed to really excel with him, however, I did not respond to his teaching style. He has very low patience if you are not quick to learn. Verbally contemptuous of students in lower level math. Not the right instructor if you struggle with math. However, he is fair, whats in book is on test, no surprises.
Terrible, terrible, terrible teacher. Will not answer questions... feels you should ask around and find the answer yourself. Tests are extremely hard.
He is a great instructor. He is willing to help if you show up to class do the work and pay attention.
Don't expect to get help from him if you're a male. He'll tell you to go read the book... or look in the notes. Tests are hard, and the final wasn't easier. Gently close the door if you come into class over 1 min late.
the hardest teacher at the falls, explains very well during lecture, but after class, just do your self a favor and go find someone else to ask. Super hard problem sets that are irrelevant to the tests.
He is sometimes hard to understand what he's trying to say and he will take off points for the slightest mistakes on your exams. I wouldn't not recommend taking him.
Very demanding professor, and expects you to be prepared for class when the period begins. Gives very clear lectures, and often offers time in class to work on material. Makes plenty of time available to students outside of class. Genuinely cares for his students and their success.
Excellent instructor. Challenging problem sets. Expected to do ungraded exercises on in addition to the difficult, graded problem sets. Expect to spend a great amount of time in order to succeed. Tests are difficult. Show you care and he will reciprocate. He does not accept late work. Do not be late to class!!!!
Rudy is a WONDERFUL instructor. He is more than helpful if you take the time to come in during office hours. He is clear, neat, very polite, and has an amazing attitude about the entire learning experience especially mathematics. Definitely recommend.
He is an awesome teacher! The most helpful teacher I have ever had at the falls. I would recommend him to anyone who is hardworking and willing to spend extra time studying and doing homework.
Rodeo Drive is a nice man, but when you ask him questions...he screams at you. He is extremely hard to understand. He greets everyone, every morning. He likes making friends. I didn't really understand the concepts he taught.
Professor Gunawans's lectures are the most clear, easy to follow, and informative lectures I've ever had. He is great at explaining even the most complicated lessons. Taking notes is easy in his class and a very helpful tool for tests/final. He is very patient with students and takes the time to explain things if you ask.
He is one of my favorite math teachers at Spokane falls he lectures are very useful and his drawings are phenomenal. He has very high expectations for his student.
He expects a lot out of students. Give him your time and your attention and he will give you all of his. If you are looking for an easy grade while learning nothing, he is the wrong teacher for you. He really cares about the success of his students. He is such a nice and caring man. Im taking him for a second time my last quarter here. TAKE HIM!
This teacher is very intelligent and great at lecturing but is VERY HARD. If you want an easy grade, you won't get one even if you are smart. Weekly problem sets take 6-7 hours minimum. If you want to be great at math, take him. If you want an easy A, run away.
Professor Gunawan is a very good instructor! Sometimes he can work a little too quickly; however, he encourages interruption and will happily clarify. After taking him 2 quarters now, I can say he is CHALLENGING, even for students strong in math. But, regardless of grade received, you WILL be a much stronger math student upon finishing his class!
Rudy is an awesome teacher, he doesnt always like to help you with work, or rather, he is just a bit scary to ask for help. His tests are pretty easy, just make sure your notation is correct. If your trying hard and still failing, he'll do everything he can to help you pass.
Hard to understand, he's extremely strict about homework and knit picks every wrong thing possible. NOT AN EASY A. Nice guy, but too stringent for me.
Rudy is extremely hard and expects wwwaaayy to much. He is extremely intelligent but should not be a teacher. If you have the time and like to do every single problem in the book take him. I would no wish him on anyone.
Rudy is an amazing teacher, if you do the homework and lots of extra problems(all of them repeatedly) you will get an A. He expects a lot of critical thinking and has tons of homework, but overall calc 1 is not a hard class. I recommend Rudy, he doesn't expect too much, just the bare minimum to make sure you know everything you need.
His problem sets are far too difficult and take at least 10 hours per set and he will not answer any questions you have, only make you feel stupid. His tests are even harder and seem to cover material we haven't studied or extremely difficult problems that we have studied. Very smart though, should probably be something besides a prof.
Mr. Gunawan expects too much of his students. I did well in all my math classes at the Falls until this one. He is nicer/more helpful to girls. He has an incredibly condescending tone, and never misses an opportunity to remind his students how dumb they are (says "you should have learned this long ago") Doesn't drop any grades, little ex. credit
I think Rudy is a very good instructor and the class is straight forward. You're grade on exams and online homework (WebAssign) and that's it. He does expect students to be proactive in learning, meaning you do have to do the book problems to do well on exams, even though he doesn't assign them. Also, he is always willing to meet outside of class.
He's a very nice man, with a pretty plain and direct teaching style. He has his own way of lecturing, which isn't always clear for everyone's learning style, but happily accepts interruptions and always finds ways to clarify. Genuinely concerned about his students and available outside of class. Tests are rigorous but he doesn't blindside you.
Rudy is the nicest guy you will ever meet. However, he made me work for my grade, and I'm pretty good at math. Rudy is tough but fair. You need to work hard and make sure you know the material solid, because he has very high expectations and he expects you to apply yourself if you plan on succeeding. I learned so much and would recommend him!
Rudy was absolutely amazing last quarter. If you like math and aren't going to slack in his class, you'll do great. He has high expectations, but that's what a teacher should have. Seriously, one of the best math teachers I've ever had and if I can chose him as a teacher again, I definitely will.
Honestly, the worst math teacher ever. He cannot teach anything, and he makes you feel stupid whenever you ask a question. If you want to learn math, take anybody else. I am extremely gifted in math and his biased way of coming up with an answer causes a grade A student to get a C on a test, if not worse.
Rudy Gunawan is the best math teacher I've ever had. I've taken him for Pre-Calculus II and Calculus I. Very intelligent and extremely good at making complicated topics easy to understand. You WILL have to work in his classes and you need to be there every day but your reward will be a better understanding of math than you ever thought possible.
I can understand how Rudy could be a good teacher, unfortunately his teaching style and my learning style were day and night so I did poorly in his class. That being said, I might have done better if I had him for both Pre-Calc 1 and 2 instead of just 2. He's a nice guy but you should pay attention and take good notes. Take both classes too.
Great prof if you want to learn by the book. It's just I wasn't the best student during this quarter. Personally, for my learning style, I much rather prefer Greg Cripe. He teaches in a metaphorical style and only stuff you need. Give him a try if you struggle to understand in Gunawan's.
He's a good teacher for those who are really invested in the math class. If you are straight out of high school, I would not recommend this class with him. He expects his students to read each section the day before and to do problems or homework on their own. He does not assign homework which can hinder some from getting good grades in his class.
This is a good class if you're really really involved. His grading is very harsh and he accepts only perfect work. You can easily fail a test with all correct answers but sloppy notation. Also, he's not easily approachable. Ask for help and I doubt you do it again.
He really understand math but he is very hard on students. His tests are really difficult
He straight out refused to help me when I did not understand how to solve a problem. He obviously knows his stuff, but can't comprehend how someone else doesn't understand math like he does.
Math must be precise & accurate. If you do make small mistakes though, you can still sometimes get partial credit. The problem sets are QUITE challenging, but he encourages students to work together on them instead of everybody asking him, which I hated at first, but loved by the end. Autonomy is important. My biggest issue was punctuality.
What he teaches isn't on the test. Teaches the basic principles but expects you to understand the hardest form of that principles using methods not taught to us. Not the most friendly and is a very test heavy class with lots of homework
He will teach the most basic elements of the section, say that you can do everything in there now, and then give you the hardest questions from that section for homework and tests. Unless this is the only class you take, he will say you are always unprepared for the class because you don't do every exercise in the book. I basically taught myself.
I suck at math but he's literally the nicest teacher ever!
Before you are allowed to talk to him about an assignment he wants you to Do a bunch of problems in the book. He advises doing problems on your own seperate from problem sets, which is good, but he gives alot of homework out as well.
Pretty much just read book definitions and solved problems without explaining them, then assigned homework. Made numerous efforts to meet with him after class for help, was told he already explained it in class. Still had to pretty much teach myself the entire course. Out of all my classes, this is the only one I have received below a 3.5 gpa.
He treats students badly and does not like answering students. He is rude and not very helpful. He has very hard test that does not match his teaching. Not a good teacher and you will really need to learn on your own. His tests are harder then the book or his teaching prepares you for. Do not take him!
Expects you to know everything. No review over things that are complex.
So far, Rudy is my favorite professor. Do your book exercises or you will fail the tests. Also don't put off the online homework, it takes longer than you think. Other than that, he explains all expectations and topics very thoroughly if you are in class. He has specific office hours but I'm not sure about flexibility as I haven't need them.
Rudy expected us to know everything from past math classes. Very fast paced. We learned something new each day and would go through examples very fast, not stopping to explain how he went from one step to the next. Got upset with the class on review day because we asked to review something we learned early in the quarter and didnt remember it.
Rudy's class was unbelievably hard. He is a smart teacher and knows what he is talking about but he expects you to know everything that he does. He's not very good at explain concepts and will do no review over pass strategies that would help you solve the problem. Test questions are unlike any problems seen before in class. Few examples given.
He was terrible he doesnt explain how to do anything he expects you to know how to do it yourself
Worst teacher Ive had at spokane falls. Told me I should get therapy for my anxiety on his test. We had 23 people the first day now we only have 8 people in class.
Easy to get 4.0.
Easy to get 4.0
He doesn't prepare students for the exam. Even if you do the book exercises, many test questions are unlike any examples in the class or the textbook.
Its funny the other two post with easy 4.0, Its great the subject was review for you, but for others it is not. Rudy is an fine teacher. He expects a lot and can be insensitive towards some questions. I think he just has a low patients and that can be off putting. Oddly, even though I had a difficult time in his class, I would take him again.
Canskip class but no late. 5*40 basic online HW,4*25 hard paper HW. Grade strict, must follow his way and elaborate to get full point. 4 exams with a bonus each. 1 Final. Exams&Finalare basic. Helpful 5*2h office hour wk, but must done some works first before asking. Extracredit for math contest volunteer. No canvas. Good lecturebut unclear writing.
To make it easy on you guys, if you're looking for an old wise and knowledgable person, Rudy is your man. But if you've just graduated from high school and looking for a cool and easy dude, run away from him; He leaves you to understand & do the work on your own. He's so kind until you show him that you haven't done your HW or read the chapter.
Took his calc 2 class during summer. Out of approximately 24 students, 3 passed his class. His work load is absolutely absurd. When ever he sees his whole class doing poorly, he goes on a speech about how hard UW was, and that the class should just "do better". He'll schedule tests in the MLC because students will spend up to 4 hours on them.
he picks up on people when they are late, and the tests are so heavy and not even closed to the lessons and practice questions class
This class made my depression worse
Trash. On review day he said feel free to ask questions when I worked up the courage to ask my question he quickly replied I did that example already go look in your notes also loves to give abstract homework assignments and lecture when his students dont get the answers right. Idk how but he made me hate math more than I already did.
I've never written a review for a professor before, but Rudy forced my hand. My biggest gripe with him is that his grading criteria is unclear. On the tests, he takes off points for not doing the problem as he showed you in class, even if you get the answer correct. Oh, and during office hours, he won't actually help you solve the problem.
If you arent good at math dont take him. He spent more time telling us what he wouldn't review instead of just going over things real quick.
If you are present and put in the work Rudy is an excellent professor! I found his lectures to be enjoyable, and well organized! It should be noted his writing/drawing abilities do much to convey the material clearly. The problem sets are challenging, but again if you do the work you are rewarded by having a solid grasp of the material.
