Great teacher. Always willing to help. Just follow the study guide, which is super easy, and u will ace the class.
Dr Pearson is awsome. He brings the stories of history to life. He is definately one of the best teachers I ever had.
An all around excellent teacher who brings the past into the present. He make everything relevant! really enjoyed his class.
Really interesting take on US History. Very enjoyable.
Professor Pearson's expectations of the class are quite fair. He passes out study guides and instructs you on how to take his essay tests. He's objective about the course material, which I appreciated.
very smart teacher, take on hist is not mainstream look at the other side of the story. Alot of quizzes, a big big term paper, essay tests, last big test are final, not comprehensive, willing to help at any extent. Will get a B if try a little.
Teaches very cleary and makes history fun! He gives out pop quizes and his notes are easy to follow along. Take his class.
Excellent Prof., one of the best I have had. If you can take him, do!
Very enjoyable US History class. Clear, concise. Tests draw from text, lecture and videos. He gives you the tools to do well in his class and is willing to help if needed. Highly recommended.
Awesome guy, great class, very informative. I didn't think I would enjoy the class as much as I did
Awesome guy, great class, had friends who took same class with different teacher and hated it...I loved it. One of the best teachers I've ever had.
He is one of the best professors that i have ever had and i recomend any of his history classes to anyone who is intereseted in history
awesome teacher, he is fun and exciting and loves his field of study. out of all of the courses i took at a university, he was the best! not bad to look at either! guy friendly, tests are pretty easy, do the prep get the grade
Amazing lectures, relevant assignments, fair tests...Best history prof, period.
great guy very helpful, and really wants student to do well in his class, very helpful
i think that he is very HOT the reason that i am able to go to class MWFri is because he is going tobe teaching"if you will"one of his favorite things to say he draws the student in and he makes us want to learn i do plus he's hot.
This class not as great as everyone is making it out to be. Dont trust them. Yes, hes a well-informed teacher, however, his lectures are hard to follow, he is not helpful, and there are a lot of things he puts on his tests that are not included in his lecture, and if its in the book, its barely ther
I was uninterested in the class and finally dropped it. There is alot of reading, and i do mean alot. He hops around alot in the subject matter and is unclear ,ost of the time. His notes on the board are unclear and if you come in late, you will remain lost. His tests are very difficult. Do not take
Great guy, Great class. He can make history fun for anyone.
I took Pearson spring 2004 and have recommended him to friends. His lectures are a bit confusing but he gives you a study guide every time before a test and you know on the first day of class what will be on the quizzes, so go by that, plus you know what you essay questions will be up front
Great professor, clear style and approachable. A+
Honors course consists of six three-page "book reports" and a 10-page research paper which are kind of a pain but not too hard to get a good grade on. Start on them early! Tests are also pretty easy and don't require too much studying. As for Pearson, he's really cool and knows a lot, but if you don't like history you'll find him extremely dull.
I didn't like his class at all. He was a really bad lecturer and he just wrote a lot of words on the board. When you took notes and then looked up at the board you got lost. Make sure you ask a lot of questions to clarify his writing assignments.
thats post civil war. great lecturer. his notes are hard to follow so don't write what he writes, write what he says. read the text, pay attention in class and watch the videos he shows. says "if you will" a lot
I don't know... he seems alright, but now willing to spend any more time then he HAS to for a student. I asked him to recommend a resource for a time line (I was getting lost, becauce he never says what year he is talking about) and he told me that "r
hated his class. says if you will every other sentence, counted it the first day of class and he said it over 300 times in one class! hard to concentrate on anything else when thats all he says

He says "if you will" an average of 6 times per every 5 minutes... he will go four minutes without saying it, and then the "if you will" phrase appears about 6 times in one paragraph of speech. However, I felt that it was really easy to learn in his class and found myself reiterating the most interesting bits to my friends after class. I think only a good professor can keep other people interested in the curriculum. Great lectures, I always got good notes from each, good videos too.
He's a good teacher but gives a lot of work and a lot of information on his lectures. He gives pop-up quizes every other lecture and somethimes his questions unclear. Knows his subject very well but hard to follow espesially his notes. Lots of reading, but if u have time and passion to study history u can take him
I was excited to learn about more modern history, and my expectations were reassured on the first day of class. Half way into the semester i am dreading taking this course with this teacher. He makes everything unnecesarily hard. He said he wouldn't test us on dates and names - it's true, it's A LOT harder than that.
I like the way he examines history rather than present you with a list of facts that you need to memorize. Great teacher, helpful and interesting to just talk to, and a pretty easy class. Word of advice: On the essay part of the tests, don't just memorize details, he wants you to explain "why" and "how" events connect and gain your perspective.
If you're taking this class just to satisfy your GE requirements, don't take him. He will make your life miserable by assigning an enormous amount of readings. Take someone else.
Didn't read either of the books- just pulled out the info I needed and followed the notes I had from class. Yeah, you have to show up and pay attention, grades are not handed to you, but effort is rewarded in this class. Make sure you go.
His class seemed like it was going to be hard, but he explains exactly what he wants to see. All the pop quizes are pretty much verbatum to the lecture that day, so pay attention. Attendence is a must. The only bad part is the 8 page essay at the end of the semester, but the topic is so big that there is plenty to write about. Very good teacher!!!
VERY HARD INSTRUCTOR.. HARD EXAMS!!
You get what u give.
He's not an easy professor but he does want you to learn. YOU HAVE TO READ THE TEXT and know what it means. If you just want the class because it sounds interesting i dont reccomend his class, but if you are really interested in black history, take the class.
he is only hard if you dont read or study.
You need to pay attention to the class lectures and take good notes. Read the assignments, THINK, and LINK topics, if you try to memorize you'll end up crazy. Excelent professor, very knowledable, clear, and conscise.
This class was almost impossible. very boring lectures, the test were very hard, and i ended up dropping the class.
I used to LOATHE US history. Not anymore! I loved loved loved this class. I learned SO much, and I was happy I had such a great teacher. It was very difficult, but I was so proud of myself when I passed with an A! Don't just memorize facts, think about the overall ideas, and don't be afraid to ask questions when you're confused or lost! Great prof.
Impossible to get an A in this guys class. It requires alot of out of the box thinking...information is good, but opinionated sometimes. Overall not bad, but not great either
Too much out of the box thinking which i didn't have time for (i'm good at out of the box thinking btw). He was a good teacher who was always approachable for help. Don't take his class unless you like to read and write mini essays each week; the mini essays are very annoying because unless you had the same conclusion he had he'd grade you poorly.
This was a difficult cass. A lot of reading and writing. Quizzes were still a little tricky and I did all of the reading. He was a very hard grader. I got an 86% on the term paper. I've never yet had to write a ten page term paper for a history class. Lectures were interesting though. Get ready for a lot of work and you'll doo well. I learned a lot
He's a good teacher, but if your just taking this as a GE class, don't take it. It's to much work for a GE class. Not an easy class only worth taking if it's for your major. He's a great guy, very intelligent.
This class sucked! I went to class every morning, got A's on all the quizes, but his written assignments wouldn't make sense, he graded them all poorly. Wanted you to look at the overall picture of history, but would grade down if you had different views. Lots of work with reading and memorizing that their was no need for such a large term paper.
Pearson is a fair grader. Tests and papers were very clear & straightforward-he gives you the essay prompts a week before. You have to really THINK for this class, not just memorize. The quizzes are difficult- you have to remember details. Even though it was hard for G.E. I learned a lot in this class & managed to get a "B" which i was glad for.
This teacher wanted you to see him as being an educated man, he felt the need to prove this to his students. Every class I attended I noticed that he used the phrases "ultimately," and "if you will" more than 50 times per class period. I was so bored with the lectures that I actually tallied how many times he said them each time.
unless you understand whats going on in his head, and relate to what he is thinking about on each subject you will NEVER pass this class. I would only use this teacher as a last resort when all else fails.
he believe in what he teacherif you love to know the past he is good at teaching it he is down to earth took both of his classes
I had him 10+ years ago for Hist 320 & 321. He's an EXCELLENT professor that got the entire class engaged in discussion, He requires you to think; really use your mind, not just read and memorize. Of all my profs in college, he made a profound influence on my life, way of thinking & knowledge of the black people's history. He has my respect & thanks.
MR. PEARSON IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT BLACK HISTORY. YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION IN HIS CLASS. YOU MUST READ THE REQUIRED BOOK, AND YOU MUST ASK QUESTIONS BECAUSE SOME THINGS AREN'T CLEAR.HE GIVES POP QUIZZES, AND YOU HAVE TO DO A 7 PAGE PAPER. HE WILL MAKE YOU ACCOUNTABLE FOR YOUR EDUCATION. AND HE ISN'T A PUSH OVER.
Fascinating lectures. The lectures are down in conversation format. Thus meaning he wants students to participate in the discussions. There are 4 papers from four book readings and one research paper. The questions he asks can be vague and hard to understand because he wants to make sure that it is known there are numerous responses to one question
U have to understand wats going on in his head otherwise all u will hear is about history tat doent' make sense.the class HAS to be quiet in order for him b satisfied. u will pass this class if really really interested in history.
Take this class only if you want to fail it.Very Hard Teacher :(
this guy is very good at teaching .. but he has quizes every week on a chapter which are pretty long...his exams are essay based and short answers..essays are hard he wants specific details from the book and relate everything you write about to "how it helped industrialize America" .. not an easy course .. avoid if possible especially in the morns
The class was boring as can be. Although he knows his stuff all he does is stand and talk while you take notes. There are 10 question chapter quizs at the beginning of each week so you have to read!! And attendance is pretty important.
He has a very high expectation. Make sure that you are reading the syllabus and course materials. DON'T MISS ANY OF THE PAPERS OR QUIZZES. I had to work VERY hard for a C in this class. He is by no means easy, but if you want to learn this is the class to take. Not the best GE satisfaction class if you are looking for an easy out.
Pearson has high expectations but they are all very reasonable. Gives quizzes every week but they're straight from the book. Read the chapters as assigned.
He is great. I thought history will be all dates, but it's not. It's more about what you can learn form something that happened, than when it happened. He has very high expectations, but also teaches very well, one of the best.
Excellent teacher. Easy structure. Essay portion of his exams are a little daunting but as long as you get the main point of the prompt its ok. One research paper, also he is a little confusing as to what he wants, but as long as you put in the effort its good. Attendance is absolutely mandatory!
Very cool laid back guy, tough grader but that was because it was an honors class. I would definitely take him again.
Very passionate about the subject. Doesnt have any homework however the essays on the test are a bit tough. Make sure to enroll in WAC so they can help you with the essays and tests. Has pop quizes but they are easy as long as you paid attention to lecture. Would reccomend as long as you are willing to study hard.
Hard grading teacher. Exam essays are graded extremely hard. Guy definitely know his stuff just make sure to always take notes and read thoroughly.
His teaching techniques are archaic. He stands in front of the classroom and lectures, he does not project out into the class, or look out into the class. He only addresses the people in the first row. I found it very difficult to understand why he lectured on the previous chapter that we had a quiz on, will not work with you with any make up work
While a bit surly during class, his lectures are fascinating & when you approach him after class he is always friendly and willing to discuss related topics. Quizzes are straight from the book. 1/3 of the test is too. The rest is essay format & requires some critical thinking but the lectures prepare you. I found him a fair grader & great teacher!
This class is what I define as a college level course. He's clear, the work requires thought, and he's very knowledgeable on history. Not an easy class, but it shouldn't be. It was appropriately difficult.
One of the main problems I have in his class is let's say we just read chapter 1 the night before. The next day of class he'll quiz you randomly on chapter 2 without giving us a warning or even letting us know to go read chapter 2 because there's a quiz. He's very knowledgeable, but still one of the toughest classes I've had in college.
The person who reviewed before me clearly didn't pay attention to the syllabus. He didn't give quizzes on the reading with the date and chapter being on the syllabus... He's an amazing Professor, but you just need to put in the effort for the grade...
VERY tough teacher, but not difficult if you put in the effort and learn the material. 1200 and 2500 word papers and his 3 exams were half-essay half-test. Quizzes each week on a new chapter, following a very clear schedule on the syllabus, and he dropped 4 of them. This is definitely a college-level course, good prep for a four-year.
A chapter a week. Attendance is almost mandatory as his lectures are great and emphasizes points not highlighted in the text. Pop quizzes every here and there, mostly when attendance is low. Study guides for all quizzes and exams posted on D2L, no surprises on tests. Makes lectures interesting. Funny... sometimes.
If you want a credible and challenging professor in college then take Mr Pearson. I totally recommend him. His classes are not meant for lazy students.
I wish this class was taught in high school. I came in knowing very little but this class was really informative and really eye opening. Its not an easy class where you can bs your way through but I enjoyed it. Rudy is an excellent teacher and really challenges you.
Rudy Pearson is a great professor. I took Hist 311 with him in Fall '12. He's no-nonsense and I like that. Stay on top of the reading, come to class, and be involved in lecture. Take WAC for help with your writing assignments. Very interesting class!!! He recommended me for the Honors program... very thankful to him. I highly recommend him.
This professor literally tells you that you will not pass his class in your first week and he's right. He provides a study guide that has nothing to do with the test questions and usually require you to use sources other than the text provided to answer his questions. He is passionate about the subject however very confusing.
I learned so much in this class. I wasn't that interested in history but his class was really interesting. He makes everything easily understandable and connects everything together.Great Class! There is a lot of reading and writing. TAKE NOTES!! Blue book essays on all the tests. Be prepared to study, but if you actually study, it's not that hard.
Learned more in his class than any other history class i've ever taken. Not an easy "A" by any means though. If you don't cover the material, there is no BSing your way to a good grade. If you like to work hard and learn a lot, then great professor to have.
This professor really knows the subject of African American history. However, he is very vague when explaining assignments and gives you low grades even though the instruction are never clear. And he is not helpful when you ask for clarification on the assignments. He makes this class much header than it needs to be to understand the subject.
Mr. Pearson was a good teacher. Although I did well in the class, I had some things I would have liked to change. He quizzes you on chapter material before covering it. I don't know if it's because you're supposed to read it first? Also, didn't cover women's rights like I expected. Otherwise, the class was great and I learned a lot!
Pearson isn't bad if you get on his good side. But once I emailed him for clarification and he insulted my by saying I made a mistake by not signing up for RAD or WAC if I didn't understand his instructions. Then, he just copied and pasted the exact same directions from the syllabus and sent them to me again. Not clear, rude, never taking him again
Pearson is a college professor and acts like it. He won't wipe your nose but is approachable and gives honest, constructive feedback. I recommend taking the WAC or RAD course with his class, it adds 60 points to your overall grade, plus gets you ready for his class specifically.
He's unreasonably vague on his instructions for his papers, which make up the majority of the grade for the class. Tests all include an essay as well. As a student with an A in English 300, getting C's and D's on his papers is very annoying. Participation plays a role in the grade, however, and he may change your grade if he feels its necessary.
Dr. Pearson is a very thorough professor. He is very clear in what he wants and doesn't take excuses. So be prepared to stay on top of your syllabus and the study guides. His lectures are tough to take notes on. Not an easy A. IMO: His view of American history is pretty negative and highlights many of the injustices that occurred.
Unreasonably difficult. Requirements for term paper is too specific. (2page description) Less than 10 students were still enrolled by the end of the semester.
Pearson makes you work for your grade, but if you are in college to learn and not afraid to ask questions, Professors don't get any better than him! He has a genuine love of American History and can lecture without notes for an hour - which is impressive. There are many readingwriting assignments, but very interesting stuff!
He is very hard professor. It is not easy to get A in his class. End up with ten students.
Take WAC, thank me later
Dr. Pearson is amazing professor. He makes you think critically. He is very tough grader . His exams, quizzes and pop quizzes is really hard. He assign long semester research paper. If you sign up for WAC/ RAD he gives you fifty extra credit and fifty participation point.
Professor Pearson teaches according to his syllabus. There are threee tests which consists of essay, multiple choice, and identification items. The test are not easy. The semester paper is about 2500 words. There are quizzes every week which are not easy as well. Overall, great class, but do not expect an easy grade.
Dr. Pearson is an extremely great professor if you take this class make sure you put a lot of time into it such as reading and understanding the material . He practically lays it out for you , just put in the work ENROLL IN RAD, it makes the class waaaaaaay easier. You can receive an A if you put forth the work for it .
10 reading quizzes, passable if you read. Tough grader on writing if your paper doesn't match up to his idea of the event he will deduct points Put historical events in chronological order. Exam multiple choice/short answer not too difficult, writing portion more challenging. Good lecturer but sometimes extremely boring (so avoid morning class zzz)
He sticks to the syllabus and gives pop quizzes. In addition, you must read the book that is assigned and keep up with the assignments. Sign up for RAD or WAC it's highly recommended in my point of view. Don't skip classes, keeping attendance is strongly recommended as well. If you want to pass do everything I said. Great teacher just tough grader.
I am writing this little review following an online discussion of teachers we learned the most from. I took a course with Professor Pearson about 15 years ago. I recall some fear over the course because I hadNever enjoyed the confusion of cherry picked historical events. This professor will explain what lead up to what and how it lead to the next
He is a great teacher. If you are taking an History 400 class, then you should like history. He tells great anecdotes about different events in history, which helps to make the class more fun. Highly recommend. This is college though, so YES you have to read and YES write and study. :-)
Great teacher! Must be looking to learn. His study guide is KEY. Read the chapter! Its one chapter a week. Its important to READ it though. He makes it fun and interesting in his lectures.
His lectures are interesting and eye opening. Every week you will have a quiz on the chapter coming up, but he does provide a study guide. The test are based completely off of the study guide too! There is also a semester paper, but he gives you a huge window to finish it. I'm taking him again next semester!
This professor is by far my favorite. His lectures are amazing and eye opening. Filled with important and interesting details. You must read one chapter a week for a weekly quiz, takes about one hour to read and take notes but if you do so you will easily pass this class with an A. The tests and research paper is easy if you read and go to class
overall he was a chill professor. some of the lectures are tedious. you HAVE TO read the assigned chapters because there are reading quizzes. 3 exams with study guides. one semester paper. also, he doesn't post grades until the end of the semester so I had no idea what my grade was til the end. doesn't remind you of due dates, check the syllabus.
About one quiz per week, some pop quizzes, essay portion of test is really the only difficult part of the class because he is a very critical grader. Not a bad class, just lectures are boring and essays are tough to write...
Way too much work for a 3 unit class, especially if you are taking other courses! Did not have a clear grading criteria, never went over syllabus and never mentions due dates/ important assignments. Not worth it.
Expect to read the entire textbook by the end of the semester. Reading required almost every night and reading quizzes weekly, on top of pop quizzes from lectures. Lectures are boring and useless and don't really follow the textbook. Exams are difficult and a lot is expected from you to do well on them. The class is totally not worth it....
Professor Pearson was my favorite teacher! He gives fascinating lectures, is willing to help you succeed, and has funny history jokes. The way he explains history is so understandable. Pearson literally gives you all the answers you just have to apply them in tests. If I get the chance I will take another one of his classes in a heart beat.
Read the chapter for weekly quizzes. Take notes, you'll need them for your essays. Lectures cover the book and add context, clarity, and interesting faqs. Semester paper, 2,500 pages with another one earlier in the semester, but if you take WAC or RAD you don't have to do the earlier paper. Follow the syllabus, key words are concepts are there!
I Liked Hist 320 much I took Hist 321 the next semester. The class is very interesting. He gives pop quizzes, but they're easy since you've already read about the terms, and he just lectured on them. There are chapter quizzes pretty much every week. There are 3 tests and the final is not accumulative. There is a term paper. Overall great lectures!
Easy Quiz every week based on reading which makes you work- and know the material for lecture. This professor helps you learn and you will thank him for it. He loves History and makes it interesting. Essays are apart of the learning curve, and at the end I was grateful for it.... as It made me learn and grow as a student.
professor pearson cares that you know your history so you will not pass if you dont read the book. however, Really the only homework he gives is reading a chapter every week for a quiz. if you take rad or WAC you wont have to do the first paper but the second paper is 2,500 words mandatory. there is 3 Test over all.
Personally did not care for him as a professor. The written portions of quizzes felt unnecessary to me and helped bring my grade down. Semester paper was a pain. I would say the best thing is that the quizzes are not hard if you read and the final is not cumulative. There are just three regular exams.
Professor Pearson is passionate about his subject! Read the syllabus, he follows it and take notes. Study each chapter and the quizzes will be easy, study the quizzes and the tests will be more manageable. RAD could be helpful if you don't have great study skills or WAC if you want feedback on what Prof. Pearson expects on papers. Not boring!
Real old school professor, doesn't use PowerPoint or post notes online, just lectures off the top of his head and writes stuff on the board. Quizzes every week, sometimes pop quizzes at the end of class. There are 3 exams, multiple choice and essay questions and 3 essays papers. He's a hard grader and lots of students dropped within 1st 6 weeks.
A lot of reading. Quiz every chapter. Must come to class for the lecture. Is old school. There is essays to write, a lot of memorizing. Wouldn't really recommend
Not easily accessible outside class, doesn't use PowerPoint or post notes online, not fair with grading, doesn't post grades in Canvas, just lectures off the top of his head, to much personal stuff in lectures. Quizzes every week, sometimes pop quizzes about things he didnt talk about. He's a hard grader and lots of students dropped.
Professor Pearson is one the most awesome teachers at ARC. Interesting lectures of history and he truly knows his material. Never a boring moment in his class. Instead of being lazy and putting up slides on the projector, he instead paints a vivid picture of history. The ones that complain are the ones who don't study, read and come to class.
Possibly worst class I've ever had. History normally my favorite subject but he ruined it for me. He's not very helpful, harsh grader, hard tests and quizzes- everything in the book and from lecture are fair game for the test so attendance is recommended. Semester paper is impossible, 2 bad topics to pick from and he wants 2,500 words for it
Super tough grader if he doesn't like your writing style or you don't get to the specific point he is looking for from a very broad prompt. I'm a history major who attended class every day, did the reading, and I could not get over a C on any writing assignment I did in this class. His feedback was not helpful either. Lectures were interesting.
Dr. Pearson is one of a kind! While it may not be an easy A, its the perfect class if you actually want to learn. Pay attention, take notes, read the syllabus, and ask questions! No homework besides semester/term paper, and email or talk to him after class about any questions that you may have.
If you dont write out your full name you will get a zero. I failed my exam due to this and he only smiled at me. Every single class there is a test, then he will go ahead and lecture on exactly that test after youve taken it. The WORST teacher ive had yet. He will test you on the most minor of details in huge events. Run from this teacher.
impossible grader, (even when prepared and keeping up with curicculum). not very helpful at all as far as feedback or even mentioning important assignment dates. NO ROOM FOR MISTAKES, no real way to keep track of your grade either as he doesn't put it into the system until the end, doesn't know how to use canvas effectively.
not helpful you wont know your grade in this class hes the only professor that doesnt post grades on canvas, never again will i take a class with this professor. Doesn't seem to care about how you feel as a student, just not helpful. DONT DO IT!!!! read this again. DONT DO IT!!!! find another teacher.
Hes a good teacher and he knows his stuff, but you must read the chapters and do the study guides. He does give our pop quizzes based on lectures he just gave or the day prior. Has around 3-4 exams and quizzes for every chapter. Not an easy A, but I did learn allot. Take wac or rad it to get rid of an essay of your choice. Test heavy.
Dr. Pearson is VERY old school. He uses Canvas very minimally, strict about attendance, very in tune w/ the subject he teaches, & hard on grading. Hes what your parents and HS teachers warned you about if you were a slacker. If youre not ready to get serious, do not waste your time because Dr. P does NOT play. Overall, I really enjoyed his class.
