Prof. Sultana is one of the really amazing instructors I have had so far a UTD. Her lectures are really easy to understand. Most of the material in the exam is from her lectures. She takes attendance every day. She also gives you online homework that will also be on the exams. They first seem hard but they are easy and always from your textbook.
Rukhsana, as I and my friends affectionately call her, is a seasoned researcher-turned professor who wants to inspire new researchers to succeed. She is a fantastic professor both in and out of class: positive, knowledgeable, humble, caring, and willing to go above and beyond for her students. If you care about Neuro, you'll love class with her
Dr. Sultana is a wonderful professor that makes neuroscience so easy and fun! She is great at scaffolding - reviewing concepts from previous courses and using them to introduce new ones. She will make sure you have learned the things she wants you to learn from her course. She is also a great speaker and inspired me to study hard for my career.
Rukhsana is a great lecturer. She is very humorous and witty. She will go above and beyond for her students to succeed. Class is not hard if you do the homework and read the material. Great mentor and instructor.
Sweet professor. Will make time for you outside of class. Powerpoints are directly taken from the book. Exams have 5-10 questions that are bonus/extra credit, and are multiple choice. There's pop quizzes before each exam, about 15 questions long. Those questions will be on the exam. Show up for the quizzes for those free points!
TAKE HER!!!!! She is amazing. My first neuroscience class ever, and I have received 100's on both exams so far. I study my butt off, but it's all pretty easy if you show up, ask questions, and study her powerpoints! She is the sweetest and really takes time in the class to make sure you understand everything before moving on!
Shes very nice and really passionate about Neuroscience. She also makes sure you understand the concepts before she moves on. I only read the book when I needed to understand some concepts that really confused me. 4 exams and 4 quizzes, final replaces lowest exam grade and she drops lowest quiz. Make sure go to class because its a free 100.
Harsh grader, assesses papers very subjectively. Takes off points for no reason and is unwilling to negotiate. Inconsistent and contradicts herself often when teaching and grading. Should not be teaching a scientific writing class considering the fact that she does not speak/write English well. A friendly person but not a good prof for this course
I took systems neuro with a stats background, and her lectures made neuroscience topics seem really disconnected. I highly recommend reading the book. Her exams are worded poorly and sometimes do not make syntactical sense. She also tends to under emphasize some important topics and over emphasize more trivial topics. She isn't bad, but isn't good.
Definitely was one of the harder classes that I've taken but Professor Sultana does an amazing job to prepare you for future classes. If you're a pre-med student, I'd recommend attending her classes. While I found the class difficult, it also helped to show me to not just memorize material and to really apply it.
I am from Engineering background & System Neuroscience felt like a parallel universe. But, I am extremely thankful to Dr. Sultana to give personal attention to me, understand my learning strength & style, & present the course in a way I can understand. I failed 1st out of 3 tests, but she helped me to excel other 2 tests & I got an A+ in the course
Very easily reachable during office hours and very patient while listening to your doubts, no matter how silly they may sound. Understands your gaps in understanding and provides step by step guidelines. She see's to it that you pass the course with an A / A+ and gives good opportunities to earn extra credits. Definitely recommend.
I have psychology background & I took this course to understand how body coordinates with brain. I liked how professor will do an action like hand movement, eye movement etc in class and will show how the signals traveled between organ and brain, this helps to remember. Her pop quizzes are good to learn & she gives opportunities for extra credits
Loved her real life examples to explain systems neuroscience. Group projects helped to learn better, would have loved to see more of these. Extra credit questions in the exams are life saver :).
Just finished my class with her today and we got our final grades back within 2 hours of taking the exam. I think everyone in this class got an A, it can be a bit daunting because the first two exams (esp the 2nd) is tricky but she evens it out with a presentation (easy 100) and participation (easy 100 as well). She genuinely cares abt students too
Great professor! Neurophys is a tough class but she is so kind and understanding and she actually made the material really interesting! Attendance is a grade so you may as well go, textbook its super confusing just use her slides, every test is cumulative so make sure you review everything before each exam because she asks previous material
Class was super fun and TAs were very helpful. Her lectures are very helpful and she has some questions embedded in between that are helpful for the quizzes and exams. Quizzes are a good indicator of the exam
She is overall a good professor, but could be better at explaining certain topics. Must fully understand every topic in detail to do good. Pop quizzes, but she gives some heads up usually. 3 exams + a final exam that can replace lowest grade. She seems to focus in on some topics but that DOESNT mean its what is important for exam, very misleading.
Dr. Sultana is so sweet. Her lectures are straight forward so if you go to lectures you'll ace the exams. There's a bunch of extra credit on exams, which should help you out. She's especially helpful if you go to her office hours before exams as she helps you understand the concepts you need to know. Honestly an amazing professor.
I love Dr. Rukhsana - she is extremely genuine and truly cares about students learning. It's a lot of work and you have to be on top of it weekly. Her practicums and exams have extra credit, which is very nice and a good cushion. Takes attendance in class as part of your grade. Her ppts can be a little disorganized so you may need the book to help.
I loved this professor and this class. I am happy i took her on my first semester of college at UTD because she basically set the example for what i want to see in my other professors. Though a little disorganized mid-semester with the lecture schedule, it did not adversely impact me in any way. Examseasy if you learn slides. She's accessible.
Besides having a clearly disrespectful approach to students who wish to learn on their own (myself being one of them), she gives out pop quizzes during class timings and makes attendance mandatory. The material is relatively straight forward but her lecturing isn't for everyone. I gave up trying to follow along and instead did other work in lecture
During COVID we had to go online for the remaining half of the semester, the exams became essay answers and then the final was split into two parts, including an essay, multiple choice questions AND oh only 25 minutes to complete with no backtracking. Inconsiderate, accent that you can't understand, questions are NOT straightforward and cryptic.
She was a great lecturer the first half of the semester. HOWEVER, after classes went online, her standards became unreasonable esp. in a pandemic. In our last week of class she dumped a bunch of work on us- 2 quizzes, a 2 part final (20 MC Q's in 25 mins, and an essay based on an extra 1.5 hrs of youtube videos we had to watch outside of lecture).
Down to earth professor who really cares about her students. There's often a line for office hours but she will make sure to see you. Exams were based off the lecture material but reading the book helped a lot. Grades were always posted within 24 hours. She definitely makes you work for your grade but it's worth it because you really learn from her
Some of her exam short answer questions are ambiguous but then marks off a LOT of points when we don't say exactly what she wants us to say. When going to her office hours to ask about it, instead of addressing the issue, I got a 30 min lecture about how I need to accept the consequences of my own actions. Many other students also had this problem.
She loves to give ambiguous exam short answers. She also loves to tell us she's going to do something but then doesn't do it. For example, she said she would replace our lowest exam grade with the final, SHE DIDNT. She said to one student she was going to drop our lowest two quiz grades, SHE ONLY DROPPED ONE. We tried to argue it, she won't listen.
She asks open-ended/vague short answer questions that could have a million answers but only accepts certain answers for credit. She also has a huge ego. She refused to admit she calculated our grades wrong even after like 10 people pointed it out. Only after a student worked out her calculations in detail with her did she finally admit her mistake.
I took 2 classes with Dr. R at UTD, and she is by far one the best professors I've had. She truly cares that students learn and apply the concepts. I also had to endure the online transition during the Spring, and boy, it was hard for me. But Dr. R made all kinds of videos and TA reviews for us to study so I survived. Study and you'll do great!
I absolutely loved Dr. Sultana. She was super nice and engaging during her lectures and was incredibly understanding if you had issues with homework. It's been 3 years since I took her class, but if she ever sees me she recognizes me and asks me how my classes are going, just super nice. She's definitely a professor I recommend.
Talks VERY fast, it can be hard to keep up. Bc of online school, she does 'pre-recorded lectures' on top of regular lectures, and they take a long time to go over (sometimes over 1 hr of info for half a ppt). But for testing, she is very considerate and it is technically all open-note. Will make sure you have a proper understanding of the subject.
Dr. Rukhsana has been my favorite professor at UTD. Took her Neurophysiology and Func. NA classes and both were difficult but extremely valuable. She expects students to apply lecture material to clinical settings in exams. If you go to office hours, she is more than happy to help and encourage you. Wish I could say more, highly recommend her.
She was very considerate this semester which is very rare for UTD professors. I enjoyed learning in her class at my own pace. Solid professor.
She is very disorganized. keeps adding assignments and homeworks without notice. she is a tough grader. her exams are very hard. questions and bonuses are different for each student. won't give u points if you find wrong questions on exams. keeps adding pre-recorded lectures along with live lectures and expect you to watch them all! don't recommend
She shouldn't be allowed to teach above the level of intro to neuro. She shouldn't be grading scientific papers and take away points for grammar when she has grammatical errors in her emails and her conversations. very disorganized. has a huge ego. doesn't want to admit she has made errors on exam questions instead give you a lecture to study more.
Honestly she used to be good but I believe she has changed her approach! save your GPA and take your course with someone else . don't let her ruin your GPA ! VERY DISORGANIZED ! huge ego! says something on the rubric and then says she is looking for something else during lectures ! makes everything confusing and her grading criteria isn't clear !
I loved Dr Rukhsana and used to enjoy her classes. She set my foundations for NSC and I appreciate it; however, I don't believe her approach towards online classes is fair and reasonable. I hope she goes back to her old ways of teaching when in person classes start. She is available outside of class if you need help, but it wasn't helpful for me.
She gives you vague questions, and refuses to give back points for questions that are WRONG, and she ADMITS that they are wrong. She made the exams hard on purpose, and EXTREMELY disorganized. She will give you instructions for an assignment that is due in less than a day, and makes up 20% of your grade.
Professor Sultana is one of the sweetest professors I've had and I really enjoyed her class! She is accessible out of class and makes sure all her students are able to address any concerns in and out of class. She made all the material enjoyable and is a fair grader, as long as you put in the required effort.
She is the WORST. The most disorganized professor who gives instructions for an assignment that is due in one day. She gives you two essays for you finals week, when you have 5 different finals, and have absolutely no time. Good luck trying to get a good grade on the exams, because the questions are from space. Vague question wording.
For our EOS assignment she posted a rubric stating all we needed to include in this paper we had to write. The closer we got to the deadline, the more rules she would suddenly add. The day the paper was due we were told there was a 5-10 point deduction PER PAGE over 3 pages. Rubric only said "paper must be 2-3 pages long."
4 exams which make up 70% of the grade. Each has two parts (MC and free response). Exam 4 also had an essay part. We had to watch a couple of videos to be able to answer the essay questions on the last week of classes while we had multiple exams. A paper which makes up 20% of the grade. Couple of homework and assignments which make up 10% of grade.
All exams were cumulative. Dr Sultana said she trusts her students and didn't use Honorlock but instead made exams so hard that basically using Honorlock was a better choice. She focused on specific concepts during lectures but those concepts never showed up on exams. You have to memorize all the details from powerpoints for getting a good grade.
Dr S uploaded lots of prerecorded lectures and expected us to watch all of them as well as her live lectures as if this was the only class we signed up for. Kept saying that she wants us to learn and apply all the concepts but her exams were based on pure memorization. I'm just sad that my first class with her ended up being such a bad experience.
She focused on specific concepts during lectures but they hardly showed up on exams so memorize everything in the slides. Made exams so hard on purpose. Never extended a deadline. Gave instructions to a paper that was due in less than a day (20% of grade). Refused to give extensions to students who weren't aware of new rules . VERY DISORGANIZED!
Not recommending anymore. She used to be a caring and understanding prof but during pandemic she had unreasonable expectations. we had two essays due during last week of class (one was 20% of grade, the other was part of exam 4). Had to watch too many pre-recorded videos to learn materials cause she chose not to cover everything in live lectures.
Dr. Sultana definitely isn't the worst professor at UTD- that being said the online format of classes doesn't suit her. We were expected to watch prerecorded lectures on top of the live lectures making it 2x the work of every other class I had. She's probably better in person.
Dr. Sultana really cares about her students. She has a live session and pre-recorded lectures, which makes learning easier. She also provides plenty of example questions to practice for the tests. The tests, not bad at all, are usually based entirely on material from the lectures. Clear grading criteria and a fun end of semester assignment as well.
Very caring professor, learned a lot. Not an easy A though.
I took intro to neuroscience with Dr. Sultana. She is a very caring professor and is willing to work with you if she sees that you're putting in the effort. Now be aware that this is not an easy A class. You really have to be on top of the material if you want to do good in her class. Tests are heavily weighted, but they are doable if you study.
Dr. Sultana is amazing, and I have taken her for several upper level courses (undergrad & masters). If you put in the work and show up to class like youre supposed to, you will do extremely well. She goes very in depth with her explanations, and is always willing to help you if you need it. Seriously, Dont listen to the negative reviews.
Professor Sultana is the best Professor for this class and I wish she would teach other classes as well because her methods make learning easy. You should ideally attend lectures to learn some of the things that arent on the PowerPoint but everything is recorded so you can watch it later on. Neurophys gave me a lot of knowledge on the CNS
Dr. Sultana has a lot of experience in research and it shows that her passion in teaching is to inspire others to continue the journey and sacrifice of scientific research. She makes neuroscience tangible by talking about diseases and how this concept relates to that disease. Very nice and accesible. Willing to help all the time.
Very engaging and fun.
Dr. Rukhsana is a very caring professor. The reason why people left bad reviews for this class is cause they waited for the last minute to start the EOS assignment and then got frustrated when they flooded Dr. Rukhsana with questions. She is an easy grader and her lectures are so helpful. If you do your work, you will easily succeed.
She's the perfect professor to teach this intro to neuro class.
I've taken Dr. Sultana several times as an undergrad and now once as a graduate student. In my opinion, she's the most enthusiastic neuroscience professor at UTD and is invested in the long-term success of her students. You need to properly study and ask questions but she's a fair grader and will make time to talk about the quizzes/test.
Professor Sultana is a good lecturer and is caring towards her students. Her tests can be sometimes be a little confusing, but proper studying will net you a good grade. Pop quizzes! Be careful!
Shes a wonderful professor and really engages the students in the subject. The class itself is pretty straightforward and Id definitely take her for any neuro class that you can
Do not recommend.
Ur NOT going to learn basic brain anatomy, functions, etc. This class isn't a fun intro intro to learning about brain. IT'S RIGOROUS! Unnecessarily overcomplicated. The tests require extensive knowledge on the intricacies of all of the inner workings of neurophysiology. Why isn't A&P a prereq? Anatomy and physiology NEEDS to be a prerequisite. RIP
2 stars means "Mediocre at best"... I'll allow it.
Just a heads up! No walk-in office hours. Expect to wait 2 weeks for email replies. Test questions/answers are worded nearly identical. Exams will not contain equal distribution of chapters, but you'll be told otherwise.
one word: she is unreasonable. this prof makes promises she doesnt keep even though lectures are recorded. she promises more drops than she does, will say she will give a test review then doesnt etc. exam questions are straight from old textbook which is wrong on some things plus they are just over minute detail. tell me why I did better on ochem
She's great professor and truly cares about her students. This class was not an easy A. Her goal is to make sure you understand the material and not just regurgitate info on an exam. She gave extra credit questions and extra quizzes for points to go towards our exam grades. Just show up, pay attention, keep up with the material and you'll do great.
I don't think the material was necessarily difficult to learn, however, the way it was delivered could have been better thought out and presented. This class prepares you for graduate school because the format in which it is taught is as if it is a graduate level course.
Amazing professor she genuinely wants her students to succeed. Gives extra credit opportunities. Make sure to watch her pre recorded lecture and attend class, in class examples are seen on tests. After every test MAKE SURE to review the tests with her since the unit tests questions are repeated on the final exam. memorize slides and prerecords!
For perspective, I scored in the top 10,000 for the JEE. This course with this specific professor was harder than my biochemistry and advanced calculus courses combined. In order to do well, you must not be taking any other science classes with this one.
This was definitely the most demanding class ive ever taken. Treat it like a job and youll do well. Make sure to watch ALL pre recorded lectures and read the textbook if you want, I didnt. Shes an intelligent professor but her lecture skills are not good. She often backtracks which can make things unclear and confusing. Do not fall behind.
Sultana is a tough professor in that she demands far too much from students who are taking an intro class. Don't take this class thinking the tests will ask to label brain parts, brain functions, lol nooooo. Topics get deeep and detailed. But you will learn so much more than any other professor you take. She hand draws things and uses colors too!
Dr. Sultana is THE professor you want for lab methods. Caring, clear in what she wants, and readily available via office hours. She guides you along the 2 main papers you'll be writing for the course, and makes sure she answers everyones questions. Exams were typically short answer, but she tells you exactly what to study for the exam. Take her!
There is a lot of material and everything is recorded. Memorize every detail on her slides and go to TA review sessions. There are limited spots to review exams, but you need to because the final exam repeats questions from previous exams. There are extra credit opportunity after every exam. Not the easiest to get in contact with.
She was a pretty good professor. She had very detailed, informative class lectures and was very passionate about teaching neuroscience. She was also very helpful and nice, always there if you needed tips or guidelines. I do think that she did sometimes repeat information a lot and went into too much detail at times. But still a nice good professor.
Challenging, but if you study & watch all pre-records, you can pass. There is a text book, but I only read it once. Honestly hardly ever paid attention in class but used the prerecords and went at my own pace. Don't get too far behind because you will have quizzes here and there! I didn't go to SI sessions but still filled out the sheets. It helped
Dr. Rukhsana has a great lecture style - thorough and not too fast. For a senior-level course, she's pretty generous in sharing what you'll be tested on. Often, students overthink the material need to narrow their focus to what she's already stated. That said, every detail of her lecture slides is fair game for the exams. Get ready to learn a lot!
Dr. Sultana is an AMAZING professor! She is both caring about educating students, passionate about neuroscience, and delivers lectures in an engaging manner! Course-wise: Neurolab methods is a super straightforward class, but also very interesting. The course can seem intimadating at first, but Dr. Sultana breaksdown everything! Learned a lot!
I took her back during COVID and hands-down one of the best professors ever. The content is a lot for each unit, but it is very reasonable if you put in the effort you would for an upper-division class. Her lectures explained everything in an easy-to-understand manner! I studied for this class by making infographics to remember the content :)
I'm giving her an OK review because her class is EXTREMELY test-heavy. I HEAVILY recommend memorizing her released lecture slides to the T because that's what the tests are over. The slides are literally word for word what she tests you on. really all depends on your study ethic. Its a hw/workload-light class but extremely study-heavy.
She's so sweet and her office hours are great but the exams are so hard. Even if you think you're ready, you're probably not because it's all the little details. She doesn't use the textbook but make sure to memorize the entire textbook for exams because her slides aren't very helpful. Also go to SI sessions!!
Extremely test-heavy class. Despite being an introductory neuroscience course, this class goes into a lot of detail and will have you studying late at night trying to catch up. The test questions are straightforward but require you to know the material very accurately. Will definitely eat up your time in terms of studying and preparing.
Speedruns through lectures, has a tough accent so you need to be in the front row to understand her. Her lectures basically just condense the material in the PowerPoint-- there's no doubt she knows her stuff. She just doesn't know how to teach it to somebody who hasn't gotten a doctorate in her field.
She has a good heart. I feel as though she test very heavy and it can be a lot for an intro class.
Don't listen to the bad review. She is a caring professor. Good teaching style if you are a visual learner. She often spends time drawing on scratch paper. 4 exams and quizzes (the question on the quiz are also on the exam (10-15)). Fully memorize her lecture slides and read the textbook once before the exam and you should do well in the class.
the professor is really sweet and genuinely wants to help her students learn and not fail. as long as you keep up with the material and prepare well for your quizzes the exams wont be hard. the lecture powerpoints are all you need to basically memorize to do well
Excellent choice - grading is straight forward and exams are easy if you study ahead and learn the slides - txtbook not required to ace them. Dr. Sultana herself is very knowledgeable, and gives warm advice during class which I actually admired. She is very accessible during office hours and remembers everything about you, genuine human, good heart
Dr. Sultana cares about her students without a doubt. She will take the time to answer student questions both in the classroom & in office hours. Majority of the material was completely new to me, but she made sure I understood every piece of every concept. Lectures were a little disorganized, and there is an incredible self study expectation.
Dr. Sultana cares deeply for her students and is extremely knowledgeable about neuroscience. She's fair in terms of grading. She will give extra homework assignments if she sees that the exam average is lower than expected. However, she designed the first exam to be difficult, and I had to go to office hours to understand her quizzes and exams.
She is the most caring, helpful, and respectable teachers I've had. Her tests and quizzes weigh heavy on the grading scale, but are very manageable. Simply listen in her classes, and study her slides and you will get an easy A. She is also very responsible, answering her emails with minutes to a day. She also provides an extra test. Just focus.
Dr. Sultana is the best professor I have had so far at UTD. She genuinely cares about her students learning and makes sure to slow down content if students are struggling. She is able to connect to and relate with her students on a deeper level, better than any other professor. She provides ample extra credit and is driven with passion.
Super clear understanding of what was on tests. Still interesting concept and very helpful TA's
