Dr. Gokal is new to the game and not at all jaded yet. She really cares about O-Chem it seems and enjoys getting students to understand the big picture. O-Chem in general is a hard class but she really breaks down what you need to know.
She is fresh out of grad school, but knows what shes doing. Her PhD is in teaching organic so. She is very straightforward, explains everything in multiple ways. My book had the answers written in it so she let me switch my book with hers. Very nice and caring, ochem is hard in general, just stay on track with the reading and practice.
If UGA is smart, they will keep Rupa! She is extremely intelligent and knows how to explain problems and make you understand. She may seem intimidating, but she just wants to see you put in the effort for this class. She is VERY accessible outside class for help and is willing to work any problem with you. I love Rupa.
This was Dr. Gokals first semester as a professor not only at UGA, but in general. She did an outstanding job and has a real passion for the material. The class is not easy, but as long as you go to class, do practice problems, and go to office hours if youre really not understanding something, itll be fine.
O chem is tough regardless of your professor. Dr. Gokal did a great job teaching this unit, she sometimes takes a long time to explain concepts, but makes sure everyone gets it. Doesnt give many clicker questions so attendance isnt mandatory, but I feel like I got lots of out the lectures.
Ochem is one of the hardest courses at UGA, but with Dr. Gokal it felt a lot more manageable. I never skipped class because I got so much out of her lectures and I easily made an A in the class, but knowing how mismanaged the UGA chem department is they probably wont rehire her even though she 100% deserves it.
I loved Dr. Gokal! She was very helpful both in class and as someone else stated, she was super available outside of class. Very passionate teacher, be glad if you get her! Chem at UGA is difficult, but I was able to make an A. Would recommend using Science Guyz to supplement class
Love her! Super nice and approachable and her lectures are amazing. This woman KNOWS how to teach chemistry, and take her class. She made me love it. super caring and go to her office hours. she will help you.
Really seems like she cares about students and their understanding of the material. Very good at lecturing and explaining.
She is the worst professor I came in late to a test and I took the test but because I was over 15 minutes late she cancelled my score
Such an amazing teacher! Very funny. Makes class really enjoyable and easy to follow along. Chemistry is hard but she breaks things down to help everyone understand the concept.
Shes good at Organic Chemistry, but if you are talking General Chemistry take a different professor. Overcomplicating, doesnt teach anything close to the test questions, useless homework.
Dr. Gokal is an amazing professor. Gen chem at UGA is not an easy task, so don't get me wrong the class is challenging, but Gokal does a great job teaching the concepts. The class itself requires a lot of work and some heavy studying and you still may not perform as well as you would like, but Gokal is very caring and her office hours are gold.
Shes the only 1211 teacher that actually cares if we pass. She makes everything so simple and relates it to examples that are easy to remember! She does clickers that are relevant to what is on the test and is always available to help. She really cares a lot and puts in the effort even made review sheets when the other teachers didnt.
Out of all the profs I think she is the one who actually explains chemistry. You still have to study outside of class, use whatever sources you can find. Organic Chem vids on youtube help a lot as well as her Office Hours. She tries to be funny/relatable too hard, often brings up some type of drug to discuss in class like Vodka or Meth. Great tho
Not gonna lie, Gen Chem itself is a difficult course at UGA. Gokal does her best even though many blame her for doing bad on tests. After 1211, I've realized there are just some subjects that don't click. If you've only taken Chem sophomore year of high school, you really just have to study harder. Read and practice problems and you will do well.
Dr. Gokal really knows what she is talking about. I think she is fair, but the issue is with the chem department as a whole, not her. She is witty making lectures enjoyable, and she keeps you busy. Outside of class you have homework, tests, progress checks, reading checks. You have to work hard to get an A but it's very attainable.
She does her best. UGA has a horrible chem department but she explains the materials and walks through clicker questions with us, shows us how to do the problems, and shes pretty funny too, shes a good teacher, the flaws just lie in the chem department as a whole and the way they design the tests and homework. You will he doing hours of homework
Do not take Rupa for organic chemistry. She may be good with gen chem, but she is terrible. I am not one to strictly rate professors but she is hard to learn things from. She goes too fast and she tends to be condescending. Not that she is bad at presenting the material to us, but they are just much better professors out their
Gokal is by far one of my favorite professors at UGA and its because she truly cares about teaching chemistry to students until they understand. As a student, you need to take initiative to study, go to office hours, tutoring and DO your homework! The teacher alone wont spoon feed you everything, but once you do your part lectures will make sense
Dr. Gokal is one of the my best teacher I have ever had. She does a great job explaining concepts and also provides additional study material. I would HIGHLY recommend taking her for CHEM 1211.
She's your best choice for chem 1211. The chemistry department here is insanely hard as im sure you know but Gokals lectures are helpful for tests. The tests are stupid hard but that's not really her fault. She tries hard to get you prepared for the tests and is very specific on what is going to be on each test. she's a little rude but overall nice
Gokal is the best choice for the gen chem department. The class is going to be extremely hard no matter which teacher you have but Gokal actually teaches and is very aware of what is on the exams. Her humor is kind of rude sometimes but it's funny if you just accept it. Overall, she should be your first choice.
Overall, Gokal is a great person. In terms of chemistry as a whole, you need to learn how to study ASAP because it is quite the adjustment from high school. Because she was new to gen chem, she didn't know 100% what was going on. She said certain things wouldn't be on the test and those things would be right on the test. THIS IS A WEED OUT CLASS.
Chem 1211 is difficult at UGA, but gokal made it much easier than some of the other teachers. Definitely the go to gen chem professor.
If you have to take elementary ochem you HAVE to take it with Dr. Gokal. She's by far the best chem professor I've ever had and if there were more chem profs like her I would have become a chem major. Her class material is hard, but she cares about her students and is very lenient and helpful when it comes to classwork.
Chem sucks but it's standardized so there's nothing much Dr. Gokal can do about that. Her lectures were good if you payed attention to them, but they got more varied and were missing stuff later into the semester. Overall, she's a pretty good professor.
Honestly, everyone says chem is hard, but it wasnt that bad. Tests are most of the grade, but as long as you read the textbook and learn to UNDERSTAND the content rather than memorize, itll be okay. Gokal is sweet since she does her own ppts/notes& reviews, but she can be rude sometimes when you ask questions. But I think shes the best for chem.
She's your best bet for Chemistry 1211. The class is very hard, but that is consistent among all teachers. Her lectures are detailed and she is always available outside of class. She is sarcastic and has a great sense of humor which does help during lectures. She does get very agitated when students leave lectures early. Take her over the others.
chem at uga sucks no matter who your prof is. but rupa is def your best choice out of all of them. shes super nice and funny and actully makes her lectures relatable and fun. she explains concepts the best. her test grades were higher than all the other teachers. shes also helpful outside of class. and her pre exam worksheets are a life saver. love
Rupa was by far the sole reason I survived Chemistry. I had no clue what the textbook was teaching me. Her lectures taught me everything I needed to know. She is hilarious and caring. Her pre-test worksheets were so helpful for me and other students.
Dr. Gokal is probably your best bet for 1211. The clicker questions are annoying and there could be better use of class time, but she does a good job of explaining what she does go over in lecture, and the review sheets she posts before tests are helpful. You will have to read and teach yourself the majority of this class, but an A is attainable.
Terrible at utilizing class time. She tries way too hard to be funny and relatable and it gets annoying. Gets really huffy and annoyed and is rude about answering questions. I took her bc of the high ratings; they weren't too true. Better than Blankenship I guess.
the class is weed out and ridiculously hard. exams are a royal pain. rupa is rude and unhelpful most of the time and is extremely condescending and annoyed at questions DURING OFFICE HOURS. she lies all the time about what's going to be on the tests. beware.
overall probably the best choice for a chemistry teacher. she really tries to explain everything as best as she can. its going to be a lot of outside learning no matter what teacher you have but she made the most of class time. clicker questions in class that count for a grade mainly based on completion so make sure to go to class to answer them.
Im sorry I dont know what everyone else is saying. Shes not that great of a teacher. Were having our first test in orgo 1 tomorrow and she barely taugh anything. She spent the first 2 weeks going over easy unit 1 stuff and then literally the last 2 days she rushed on nomenclature. I went to Hubbards lecture and he is much better in my opinion.
Gokal was a great professor for Gen Chem 1 since she took the time to thoroughly review the material and not just do practice problems all class. She made a practice test before every test which really helped. She's probably one of the better professors for Gen Chem at UGA. If you work for it, you'll be fine.
She spends too much time talking and being overly dramatic before she begins lecturing. She tries too hard to be funny which takes away from actually learning. One time Hubbard taught her class because she was sick, and I learned way more from him in that one lecture. She can be rude to students, and I honestly wish I would have taken Hubbard.
I took her bc of the good reviews on here so I was surprised when she was one of the worst teachers Ive ever had. Dont get me wrong she seems like a nice person but she isnt a good professor at all. I have to retake this class and I feel like I wouldnt have to if I had a different professor. Many people withdrew because of how difficult it was.
Gokal made learning ochem very easy! Still, time is needed outside of class in order to be successful, but she was very good at explaining things. We did a more question/discussion based lecture/learning new info outside of class though. So be prepared for that. But, overall very clear, easy to understand, and helpful!
TAKE HER! She is literally the kindest professor I have had at UGA. She is so understanding of the difficulty of the course & wants you to succeed. She's most accessible person outside of class- she'll stay as long as you need whenever. She explains things in a way that you can understand, even though she's brilliant. Never makes you feel dumb.
If I didn't have Science Guyz I would have failed this class. She's nice, but took forever to get through material and I never felt like she prepared us well for the exams. As long as you have Science Guyz and keep up in the book where she is in class you'll be fine, just don't expect her to teach all the testable material through lecture alone.
Very rude and not helpful. It's hard to say I don't recommend taking her because the entire chem department at UGA is a failure. Her lectures are not helpful, she goes over simple things in class and then the test questions over those things are exponentially more difficult. The textbook sucks too and is full of errors. Doesn't email back fast too
Shes actually a great professor when she doesnt get off track, but unfortunately she spent a lot of time on logistics and not enough on lecture material. But she is very caring and helps you understand any concept if you go to her after class or at office hours. I had jackson last semester and i think gokals better at teaching.
Chem 1211 sucks, but she is by far the best professor for the class. There's a lot of homework and it gets really challenging if you fall behind. She clearly wants her students to succeed and will help you if you ask for it.
Gokal had the potential to be a good teacher, but she would get distracted in class & we would fall SO behind. When we moved to online instruction, her teaching videos showed that she could teach the material, but in person I would never learn anything. Ochem is hard but this was pretty bearable if you can teach yourself everything from a book.
I got an A because this was during the pandemic, but given that I got a C in both Gen Chems Never making higher than a C on test, and I made my first B on an exam before the pandemic, I believe gokal has a gift. There is not one professor that can explain things the way she can. She brings a light atmosphere to class, there is never a dull moment.
I really enjoyed Dr. Gokal's method of teaching organic chem! I really learned a lot from her. She's very funny, and her lectures are easy to pay attention to. Definitely would take her class again. Be careful if you walk in to class late or leave early, she'll probably call you out.
At first, I thought Dr. Gokal was all over the place in terms of covering material in a timely fashion, but once you get into a routine, it gets easier. Gokal does seem to fall behind Hubbard's class though, often leaving off some details the Hubbard's class got, but as long as you read, keep up, and do all of the book problems, you can get an A/B.
OChem is definitely known for being difficult, but she does her best to make it as understandable as possible. Someone who actually cares about how we're doing and whether or not we understand the material is refreshing after gen chem. She's tough but she has to be to keep the course going. It's flipped: do the hw, read the book and you'll do fine.
Don't do it. Any other UGA professor can teach you better, and they won't be nearly as sassy about it.
One of the worst prof I've ever had. So rude and sassy when ppl ask questions, and her attitude seems like she always has something better to do. Says she's not obligated to keep us after class but continues teaching content when some have to leave. She gets off track and goes super slow then rushes 1-2 days before the exam. Take another prof
Dr. Gokal made difficult OCHEM topics make sense. She would even make notes for us, which were useful. The averages on tests are around 50%, so be ready to study hard. If you are looking to get an A in the class, read the textbook and her notes thoroughly (and ahead of time), do all the assigned practice problems, and go to her office hours.
Dr. Gokal was the first UGA chemistry professor that actually taught me something. She explains hard topics with simple terms to help you grasp them, and even throws in a couple jokes to lighten the serious mood of organic chem. Firmly believe the poor ratings came from people who spent more time complaining than studying. Would take her again.
My experience with Gokal made me want to warn others taking her in Organic Chemistry. She is the worst professor I've ever had. She can have a lousy attitude somedays and makes everyone feel so stupid. Her lectures suck, and she expects the students to read, learn for themselves. Good luck to you if you're taking her lecture.
Ochem is the hardest class in college no matter who you take. That being said, Gokal is a talented teacher in her explanations, but if you don't spend 6 hrs/day reading the book/doing Science Guyz, you probably won't pass. Class was a formality cause you have to teach yourself. She made the final easy to make up for the 50% test averages though.
Gokal was a solid choice for OCHEM. She was wonderful at explaining hard concepts and gave each student all the individualized care needed during her office hours. The class was insanely hard, but it was the material itself mostly. All of the grades are from the tests, and she does not give curves. Be prepared to dedicate a LOT of time.
Dr. Gokal is a great lecturer, but it's important to read and teach yourself most of the content beforehand for lectures to be beneficial! She can be condescending at times and blames students for low scores, even with exam averages in the 40s/50s. Grading is largely exams (96%) and participation (4%).
While she never responded to email, her office hours and exam reviews were super helpful. Gokal is a decent choice for OCHEM minus her sass. She explained the material well, but class exam averages were around a 50% with no curves. Get ready to eat, sleep, and breath ochem for a decent grade. get science guyz if anything
Dr. Gokal really has the potential to be a good teacher but decided to stress the students of the entire summer cohort by not communicating and telling us that 40/50 averages were the cause of a "disconnect". She just can't do online. Summer ochem is tougher though, but she did not handle it well and is just often rude.
BEWARE. Dr. Gokal comes across as relatable, very sweet, and is good at explaining certain concepts, however her tests reflect none of the material done in class. Class test avgs were a 49 and a 50 and she refused to curve. There was a definite disconnect in instruction and Gokal refused to recognize it. Get ready to study hours on end to pass
Gokal knows what she's talking about, but since instruction was online everything felt jumbled. Class averages for all the exams were around a 50, and she didn't offer any curves. Good thing is that her tests were basically a steroid version of the practice problems in her lectures as well as a touch of book material.
Took during the summer, and those saying that she didn't curve are misleading. She had bonus assignments and questions, had a retake of a test, and made the final from test questions. Test q's are based on HER notes. This class was taken off cycle and online so averages were lower. Being online made students more disrespectful towards her on zoom
Dr. Gokal had lots of potential to be a great professor. This is the hardest class many people will take and was online. She taught decent but despite the situation Dr. Gokal was not accommodating, understanding nor communicative with students. She rarely responded to emails and was contradictory and didn't treat students with respect we deserved.
Avoid her at all costs. The most disrespectful, entitled, and egotistical prof I've had. Ruined my 4.0 GPA, and I barely passed the class. I knew it was going to be a hard course, but her voice made me want to commit chop suey. She doesn't want your class to succeed, no curves, no drop test.
She was good at teaching big ideas and tough material, but this was all overcast by her rude attitude and condescending demeanor. She treated students like we were annoying her. From day one she spent a large amount of time trying to convince us to drop. Once the withdrawal deadline passed she transitioned to, You chose time stay, deal with it.
GET ANY PROFESSOR BESIDES GOKAL!! She is the worst professor. I knew that OCHEM was hard before taking it, but she made it unbearable. She made her students feel stupid anytime they asked questions, so dont even ask. dont email her, she wont respond. And this comes from somebody that ate, slept, and breathed organic & she still ruined my 4.0!!
This class was online for the first time ever bc corona. The first 2 exams she made were impossible to finish in 1 hour and she did not change that until exam 3. Didn't give us a dropped exam or anything after not giving us enough time for the first 2 exams. Never responded to emails. Disregarded students concerns. She enjoyed failing 1/2 the class
Gokal is a really good lecturer-explaining ochem topics well. The problems arise when it comes to actually administering tests/class, and speaking w students . Test averages were incredibly low, and never curved. Unnecessarily vague about test content. Not enough time on tests (1 hr). Very few grades. She is VERY moody, which is good and bad.
Dr Gokal is a wonderful professor who goes out of her way to help students. This class is very challenging, but if you stay ahead of her in lecture, do the assigned practice problems, and work your butt off, a great grade is very achievable. Her tests are fair, and come straight from her notes. I recommend science guyz to help you stay ahead.
Orgo is hard. In my opinion, Gokal makes material easier to understand. Yes-- you still have to study incredibly hard, but it's that way with every chem course. She can come off as short at times, but it was usually toward students that asked questions that she already answered. She helped me understand material and I highly recommend taking her.
Worst organization out of possibly any professor Ive ever had. If you take her going to class is a waste except for clicker questions. Just read the book honestly
Would not take again. She doesn't actually TEACH and she just spats off information like she is presenting a known concept to experts. Expects you to have everything memorized before coming to class. Gets mad when you ask clarifying questions. Would highly suggest getting a tutor. The material isn't really hard, but you have to teach yourself.
No offense, but offense. Rupa Gokal is one of the worst science professors I have come across. I have had her for gen chem and ochem at UGA and she has and still is condescending towards students which makes them scared to ask questions. If you have the choice, I would say not to take her by any means.
Whatever you do, don't take her class. She is disrespectful when asked questions and doesn't know the content herself.
Dr. Gokal is not a good professor. She spends too much time in class discussing irrelevant material. We always fall behind in the syllabus and she blames the class for it, wasting more time. She gives attitude when students ask meaningful and relevant questions, often thought of by multiple people. Youtube is a better source. She needs to go.
Please take all offense because this professor is hands down the worst teacher I have ever come across. She teaches as if the students have been learning the material for as long as she has and has a condescending attitude towards questions. If you can, avoid taking her AT ALL COSTS!
Rupa Gokal is the first professor I've ever disliked. She's rude, condescending, and moody 24/7. She gets angry anytime someone asks a question pertaining to the exam, and refuses to curve anything despite the class average being a 56. She "answers" questions with more questions and talks at you rather than to you. Youtube is a better teacher.
Barely teaches anything that is on the test, barely gives any practice. The class average on the first test was a 56% but there was no curve. It was just "you need to do better". Apparently she already got in hot water over the summer but nothing has changed. Rude when you ask questions. She used to be great in gen chem but idk what happened.
When I use RMP, I take reviews as a grain of salt; however, I would avoid taking her. This is coming from someone who attended office hours, went to tutoring, and stayed after class to ask Q. To simply put it, she doesnt teach effectively. We wasted the first few weeks doing gen chem then rushed into ochem material. Blamed the class for 54 AVG.
Avoid her at all costs!
Rupa is a fine teacher. Most bad reviews are coming from people who failed the last test. It's ochem, its not supposed to be easy.
People really didn't like Dr. Gokal. Right now a few select people are rallying the group chat to try to tank Dr. Gokal's score on rate my professor because our last test was incredibly difficult. Keep in mind that ochem is really freaking hard anywhere you take it, we get a drop test, and it's the whole chem department's fault about the test.
She is very sassy and disrespectful when being asked questions... especially when related to an exam. The class is only graded on tests and some clicker questions. She rarely does the clicker questions. No quizzes or homework, so students have no idea what to expect on tests. We get fussed at for not doing well/understanding. Very disappointing.
I get that OCHEM is supposed to be a hard class. However, she makes the test impossible. I understand that the test questions will be hard because its ochem. I understand that work must be put in. However, we only get one hour and it seemed as if 95% event of the people didnt finish the exam. We need more time. She is also not being understanding
Ok Im someone whos scored 30 pts above the 50 avg & let me just say that YOU HAVE TO WORK FOR THIS CLASS.. especially w Gokal teaching (bc she expects you to be AHEAD of her). Also to the other positive reviews, dont automatically assume the negative ones are people who whine and failed w/o trying. Anyway, wouldnt take her. Disorganized.
Gokal's teaching style is not very effective for most students, but I guess it works for some. Most of what she says in class can just be learned in the textbook. I heard she is a great Gen Chem teacher, but Ochem not so much. This class moves really fast, so just keep up with the reading and get ahead if you can.
Whatever you do, DO NOT take Gokal for Ochem. If you want to actually feel successful, she will not help you. An A is obviously doable, because you have to teach yourself anyways, but this woman is pure evil. She blames the students for low class averages and gets sassy and rude when you try to ask questions. Take any other professor than her.
If you DO get her, some advice to do well: stay ahead of her in reading (going to class without this is a waste of time on your part); do intext questions while reading; to study for exam, do ALL assigned end of chap problems and redo ones you got wrong (DO IT!!); go to office hours if you dont understand (IGNORE ANY ATTITUDE); SPACE OUT STUDYING!!
the worst. AVOID at all costs. i didn't learn a thing from that woman. she is apathetic and thoughtless.
before rupa gokal took over ochem at UGA, it was fine and truly do-able. Shes the most unfair professor Ive ever come across. I would honestly suggest not taking ochem at UGA at all if shes part of it. Please save yourself, I wish I was joking.
This was the hardest class I've ever taken and definitely don't recommend it. Her lectures are long and very boring. She was a mean professor and got mad when the class would miss basically every clicker question. I emailed her asking about a question in the book a received the worst email I've ever gotten from an adult or teacher ever. Good luck.
OCHEM is a hard class but Rupa makes it absolutely unbearable with her attitude. We don't have enough time to take exams and then blames us for the abysmal averages. The only way to get anything out of class is by staying ahead of her with content. I definitely recommend using a service like scienceguys to prepare for class and the exams.
Do not take Gokal if you want to pass. Ochem is already difficult but she makes it almost impossible. She doesn't make sense during lectures & has a short temper with students. She doesn't care even when the entire class is confused. Read the textbook before class, practice problems, and Science Guys are your only hope & that might not be enough.
She was not super helpful and made it difficult to succeed in the class. Felt like she wasn't on the students' side. Ochem in general is very difficult, way more than expected (as a student with all As) and taking her did not make it easier.
One of the worst ochem teachers. She barely teaches during class and the tests have gotten way harder ever since its been online. Theres pretty much no partial credit so you go from an A to a C after missing like two problems.
I don't think I have ever hated a professor more. I sent her 7 emails the entire semester and she didn't respond to a single one. Actually wanted us to fail. When the test average for two tests was FAILING, she said it was the students' fault for not studying hard enough. Take her if you want to have the worst semester of your life.
I would recommend just not taking her. Idk she's just not a good professor. Some people told me they liked how simple she made stuff, but then again these people didn't perform well either so her teaching doesn't work...
She blames students when people fail or the majority of the class gets clickers incorrect. She often says she disagrees with the textbook, does not give a reading schedule whatsoever, and often goes over class time. She is nice in office hours, but not in class. You need to study outside of lecture (science guyz, tutor, etc). Every test avg was 50s
Gokal was still adapting this semester (Fall 20). She does her best to teach, but its still a hell of a class. Youre gonna be working for your grade everyday, and it aint easy. I would choose her, Jackson, or Hubbard for OChem I and II. Good luck.
The chem department at UGA does not care about you, and they never will. This class destroyed my love for chemistry. The tests are made to make you fail, no matter how good you think you are at chem. On top of that, they then proceed to blame the class average of 50 on the students, not their lack of empathy or crappy teaching.
There is no guidance provided as to what to study for exams which make up the vast majority of the grade. Exam averages stay in the 50s. The professor told us we should have dropped the class even after the withdrawal deadline passed instead of encouraging us
I am not someone who is failing this class; I am on track to get a B. Yes, ochem is a beast of a class. However, when you have a bad professor, it is almost impossible. Basically no partial credit is given, she is rude in response to emails and when questions are asked. She is very smart, but she is not a people person and surely not a teacher.
Gokal is not as bad as the other reviews claim her to be. To succeed in OChem, you have to read ahead of her teaching or it wont make sense because she teaches as if you already know it. Theres nothing wrong with that style of teaching (she makes it easy!), students just have to be more responsible for the class instead of complaining about it.
Yeah, Dr. Gokal is not the most amazing professor, but she definitely is not the worst. Ochem in itself just requires an insane amount of prep and previewing/teaching the material to yourself before you go to class. You must use every single available resource you can like office hours, tutoring, etc. and you will prob end up okay.
Take the class with her because she's making the tests for ochem 1. I actually didn't have her as the lecture teacher but I wish I did. Instead I would always be in her office hours asking her questions. Her kids always had perks and were able to better predict what was going to be on the tests.
In order to succeed, you must read ahead, do all textbook problems, and come to class. If you do not read ahead, the lectures won't make much sense. She posts her notes which is nice, but she has little patience with students in class. She also makes the exams, so if you have her as a professor you may feel more prepared for exams.
Do not take her. Ochem is already hard as it is, but she is completely unhelpful. The averages on test were 50's and we were encouraged to withdrawal. She was blatantly rude to students when questions were asked. She treated us as if we were not trying or studying and would get aggravated when we were confused. Take another professor.
Ochem is notoriously hard, but Dr. Gokal is not the sole reason for this. This is a flipped classroom, but so is every other chemistry class. All the tests are the same for everyone, regardless of your professor, and they will be difficult with any of them. However, Dr. Gokal can be helpful in office hours, and she is very knowledgeable.
Everything said about her being rude is true, except that being in her class is advantageous. The person who said that is just salty, as there were definetly no perks to being in her class. She is not a good option for this class unless you don't mind the sass and rudeness. Teaching wise she isn't the worst but the tests were very difficult.
This class was unbearable. We had to learn o chem online which she even said was very difficult. When you email her, instead of answering the question she gets smarts almost as to prove a point, which makes you not want to ask questions. In class, she asks if your with her but even if your not she continues to teach. Take a better prof!!
Absolutely terrible professor. Never answers questions, is nearly impossible to reach and have a conversation with outside of class, posts grades and refuses to answer questions regarding the test. If you had any questions regarding a test answer, she would threaten to drop 5 points off your test grade. Seriously how is a 40 test average a thing???
Prof Gokal's main goal is to tell her lectures as she has planned without assisting students who may be struggling. When asked questions, she gives unhelpful and sassy responses that do nothing but discourage students from asking for help. The class itself is hard, but with a better prof, it is possible to pass. UGA chem dept needs better profs!!!!
The class very difficult and the exams were tough. Rupa had the worst attitude and was very sarcastic. Terrible prof, but the worst part was the final exam. It was very diffuclt and hurt grades.
Dr. Gokal wants you to understand the material. If you ask her a question about ochem during office hours, she will genuinely do her best to ensure you understand. Ochem tests are very difficult nonetheless, but do what she tells you to do at the beginning of the semester and you will be able to persevere.
ochem sucks at uga regardless of the prod. gokal makes it worse. super rude. does not answer questions. very unclear. terrible at time managment. not willing to help with old test questions. shes always moody and just plain mean. not considerate esp with covid going on they didnt care. if u can take ochem somewhere else. or take jackson or hubbar
If you have to take her, get ready to teach yourself. She flies through info in lecture and is often rude when people ask for clarification. Much more helpful in office hours if you actually get to ask your question as a lot of students attend. Tests often go beyond the understanding of book. She is not sympathetic to covid and online learning.
I have dealt with difficult classes/professors in the past but nothing can compare to the absolute nightmare that Gokal's O Chem class is. She tries to bring down students that ask more basic questions that are deemed "homework" which basically means that she never covered them in class. I have to retake this class and will be avoiding her.
She was very knowledgeable during lecture, but can be very condescending at times especially when asking questions. Okay professor at best, but not horrible. To succeed, you need to stay with the textbook chapters and complete the practice problems. This course is designed to move very fast, and the exams are extremely difficult and fast.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS AT UGA!! The professors have no mercy if you are doing bad. I did all the work and studied my butt off, and I still did bad. The tests are difficult and so many points. There are no other grades but lecture clickers. She is rude, condescending, and a liar. I wish I withdrew.
Organic chem is a difficult class, so obviously everyone will blame it on the professor. I can't say much about Dr. Gokal but she did do her job of getting the material across to us (maybe not the best, but good enough considering the pandemic). The online tests were terribly formatted and you're essentially on your own, I wouldn't take it online.
This class itself translated terribly online. Dr. Gokal herself was very condescending and genuinely made students scared to ask questions. Your only grades come from exams, which are extremely difficult (class average consistently was around 40-50%). I spent hours every day studying, taking notes, and doing problems, and I still have to retake.
Dr. Gokal is a solid choice for ochem 1 at uga. She is very knowledgeable about chemistry and is always very helpful during office hours. If she gets frustrated during class, it is usually only because someone asks something that was already explained that proves they weren't paying attention. I recommend asking to attend in person class every day.
Attend all lectures & practice independently. Unfortunately, office hrs & review sessions are extremely INEFFICIENT (i.e. directly answers specific Q). She often breezes through topics that later appear in greater depth on exams and has given an attitude towards students' concerns. Exams were consistently 50s & blamed her students' aptitudes. GL.
ochem's hard. Most learning is done outside of class. professors are really there to give a brief overview and go over exceptions to rules. I liked Dr. gokal. I have had her before and am taking her again. get on her good side. show up to class. ask questions. let her know your name and face and this will make her more approachable and want to help
Dr. Gokal is a new teacher & is figuring out how to best teach. She grew a lot during the semester I had her (Fall 2020) and became more understanding. She will work with you if you need help, but you must do everything you can to succeed (all reading & book problems). Not impossible but not easy whatsoever. Study well for the first test; it helps.
I took Dr. Gokal for CHEM2211 during Spring 2020, when COVID-19 forced us to go online. I am a private tutor & LOVE her style. She is truly a gem of a teacher & has such a profound understanding of learning psychology. Yes, you have to work extremely hard in this class to succeed (1-2 hrs DAILY): if you got a bad grade, it's not her fault.
I personally think I could not have had a better professor for ochem. She does speed through the chapters but she will also spend half of class going over one problem just so she can explain it to where everyone gets it. I think she truly cares about her students. If you don't do well its not necessarily your fault but its not hers either.
She literally nevers gives any time for clickers and its super annoying
Gokal is probably the worst teacher Ive ever had. shes incredibly disrespectful and condescending to students. Shell waste an entire class period on one problem, so we were always behind. Our classes test average was often a D or F and she would explain to us why we were all at fault and dumb for not understanding her tests.
Gokals got a bad rap bc of her teaching during the pandemic (Spring 20-Fall 20). However, her class Spring 21 has been way better compared to last semester. It still is a hell of a class (its OChem.), but she does her best to teach her students. I would pick her over Morrison any day. Do your work, participate in class, ask questions. Good luck.
It is so easy to get behind in this class so do everything you can to stay on top or get ahead of the readings. You learn outside of class and then come to class and do clicker questions. Gokal seemed to genuinely care about her students. She's a good lecturer but ochem is just a lot to learn in such a short amount of time.
Ochem is hard regardless of who you take, however Gokal is a great option. She is funny, understanding, and genuinely cares about there students. If you read the textbook before class you will do well on the tests. Gokal is a great option and makes ochem manageable.
Dr. Gokal is an incredible teacher and person. She cares a lot about the students, and it makes me mad to seed how many people blame their poor grade on her. 95% of the test problems are taken directly from the textbook, so it is literally your own fault if you do badly. She is one of my fav professors ever, and i highly recommend her.
Online learning with rupa sucked but I liked her so much more for 2212 in person. Science Guyz will be you key to success keeping up with the material. Keep up and study everyday and you will do well! Good luck.
I really enjoyed having Dr. Gokal for my third semester and could clearly see her growth as an instructor. Her class notes that she posts are very organized and incredibly helpful to do well in this class. You have to go into this class expecting to be challenged and dedicated to putting in the work; however, Dr. Gokal does a good job teaching.
Dr. Gokals lectures are irrelevant. Be prepared to teach yourself the entire curriculum, as she barely goes over anything beyond a basic level. She gives practice problems in class as clickers (sometimes) but they are usually far more basic than anything on an exam. But, organic is hard, shes probably the best choice as far as this class goes.
Gokal only ever does cover the content to the most basic level in class. Unfortunately the professors expect the textbook to do most of the teaching for them. So in the end, your grade will be reflective of the effort YOU put into self studying. btw- SCIENCE GUYZ! They will teach the material when the professors wont. Big help to me and my success
Shes an average professor. Like others said, she teaches the basic stuff so you cant rely on what is learned in class to get you through the exams. Study your ass off for the final because its extremely difficult. Had a 95 in the class before it, got a 56 and watched my A slip right out of my fingies. Studied for 3 days straight too.
Dr. Gokal is infamous for being the professor to avoid when taking OChem. I think this year she stepped up her game. If you simply listen to her and do as she says, the class is very do-able. You have to put in the work to receive the grade that you want. There are 4 tests, a cumulative final, and a small percentage of your grade is clickers.
i dont know how this woman can call herself a professor, she gets a huge F on her job. spends half the class babbling about irrelevant things like her big crush on chris hemsworth.
I have taken this class with Prof Gokal two semesters in a row. I'm not sure what happened over the winter break, but this semester felt like a full 180. She was much more helpful and less condescending than last semester. However, with that being said, this class itself is difficult no matter who you get.
O Chem is a hard class no matter what, but Gokal helped me out a lot. You have to read the book ahead to stay on track and classes are mostly focused on problem solving, but she will lecture on more difficult topics. She goes through questions slowly, but ita beneficial because she is very in depth.
I had Dr. Gokal for ochem 1 and 2. I recommend going to her office hours for help. Express your wanting to succeed in the class to her. She was always helpful during office hours. She gave advice to do well & explained the material well in order to understand. One of my favorite classes this semester and she definitely made ochem more enjoyable.
She is probably one of the nicest teachers I know. She gives you hints during lecture as to what will be on the exam. Highly encourage you to try and take her!
A lot of people say Gokal is bad, but if you do what she says, youll be fine. She is very knowledgeable and posts all notes on ELC, which I found very helpful If she ever offers tips on how to succeed in the course, listen to her. The one time I didnt I failed that test. Also her review sessions and office hours are super helpful.
Dr. Gokal takes really good lecture notes and posts them on ELC. She also gives very good study strategies if you ask. Her review sessions and office hours were very helpful. As long as I did what she said I did fine on the tests. This class is HARD though. Dr. Gokal teaches it very well, but if you dont study hard you will not do well.
Frequently assigns readings and problems for entire chapters the night before class, doesnt understand you might have other classes. Its possible to do well, but only if you dedicate 100% of your focus to only this class 24/7.
This being my first extremely hard chemistry and it being fully in person after not having classes in person for almost two years, Dr. Gokal was a big help. She cares about her students and knows that this class is difficult, but makes sure you understand the basics. This class does require lots of work outside the class, but Gokal teaches well.
Professor Gokal is kind and funny in class. Her teaching style has improved throughout the course. In the beginning, Gokal did not explain any concepts. She just told students to read the textbook and gave us practice problems in class. Towards the end of the course, Gokal lectures more. Remember, you will have to teach yourself a lot though.
Gokal's lectures were super helpful. She also uploads worksheets that can be really useful for the exam. She makes learning ochem very enjoyable even though it's a tough class. Ochem is going to be hard so you will have to take time to understand the material. She also hosts zoom session before exams to answer questions.
Dr. Gokal is personable and willing to help, but her teaching style isn't a fit for anyone without the time to teach themselves much of the material or the means to access tutoring. Her class suffers from poor scheduling, at times resulting in entire chapters receiving little coverage, and she often assigns chapter work late the day before lecture.
Dr. Gokal was a great professor. Her lectures are super helpful and she wants her students to succeed. I did way better in this class than gen chem. If you study and attend class you will do well.
Alright, I'm going to be real. I wanted to come on here and bash her but I can't. Ochem sucks no matter what prof you have. You really have to grind outside of class. She is just extra annoying with her stupid jokes that are just not funny at all. She honestly was not bad for a UGA science course. They all suck
This woman lacks all professionalism. Upon another professor being hospitalized, she took over for our class. She was condescending as to why our class was not at her class's level (we were being taught at a slower pace) and hurled insults when she lost patience. She acted as doing her job was beneath her and cared more about ego than teaching.
Easily the best chemistry professor I've had at UGA (admittedly a small sample size), but if you participate, pay attention, and most of all do the practice/book problems, this class is a lot of work but not as hard as you might expect. She tends to personify concepts which is super helpful for understanding especially if you don't need 2212.
Honestly wasn't her biggest fan for the first few months. However, I also didn't direct my energy into the right type of work and studying for this class. OChem is def hard but Gokal truly cares and continuously encourages us to identify where we have difficulties and reach out for help. Went from hardcore failing to getting a B-
Dr. Gokal is a very good organic chemistry professor. She made hard concepts easy to understand in an engaging way like no other. She also built up a sense of confidence that you, yourself, could do organic chemistry. Overall I recommend her to all students for OChem.
Dr. Gokal was generous in uploading notes from class into eLC. However, it would have been nice to see her actively teaching in class more often, as the first half of the semester was more hybrid-based. Ochem is inherently difficult, regardless of the professor.
Overall solid choice for the worst class ever. She sometimes makes mistakes or posts wrong answers but she got better about that over the year. This class itself is just awful but gokal is a good choice given that
Loved Her! Def one of my fav professors, ochem is a rough class no matter who teaches it, Dr. Gokal's lectures were engaging and well thought out and her notes are neat and thorough. Reading the textbook before class is a must and helps greatly. Don't be afraid to ask questions, she's always willing to explain. Taking her again next semester :)
O-Chem is hard regardless of who you take, but she dose a really good job of helping out students if you go to office hours. Put in the work with her and the class isnt that bad.
honestly dr gokal is a queen. she works out problems in class which is how I learn best and she genuinely cares for her students. ochem can be very difficult but I have grown to actually enjoy it since I finally know what Im doing
Dr. Gokal is honestly the best professor in the chemistry department :)! She really prepares us for exams by giving us actual problems and proper depth lectures in order for us to learn. After failing organic previously with another professor at UGA, I can say that Gokal should be who you pick to show you the basics of o-chem, and even chem 2212
My FAVORITE professor. I've heard stories of her being awful during COVID, but she made learning Ochem "easy." It is critical to read through the textbook to be prepared for class but she goes at a reasonable pace. If you have the option to take her, TAKE HER. She is wonderful, sweet, and her jokes in class are funny. I loved Ochem due to of her
I would like to say Dr. Gokal is the best chemistry prof I've had at UGA, but her teaching style isn't ideal for people without the time to teach themselves the material or the means to access tutoring outside of class. She is horrible at pacing herself because we will sometimes go slow during lecture and then through an entire chapter in one day.
This is my second time with Gokal and she did a good job at teaching ochem 2. It was frustrating to not know what would be on the exam until a coupe days before. Do the textbook problems!! Easy to make small mistakes, so take advantage of office hours or time after class.
After 4 semester of UGA chemistry, I can safely say that Dr. Gokal is the best professor I've had from the chem department. She actually tries to connect with her students unlike most other professors I've had. She's super helpful during office hours and gives detailed notes to all of her students for each chapter. Not to mention she's pretty funny
She's given a bad rep but she tries her best for her students. It's just unfortunate she's always spread so thin by the department. The course is hard because it's ochem 2. I'm personally not a fan of her way of teaching which involves heavy use of clickers and almost a flipped classroom scenario in some lectures. It does work for others though.
She was an amazing professor it is horrible that she is leaving, but honestly if you are taking her at whatever university she ends up working at you are very lucky. She made o chem something fun and very engaging with plenty of helpful practice and discussions during office hours.
Dr. Gokal was a good professor when it comes to teaching the class. She cares about her students and tries to help the best she could, but O Chem at UGA is gonna be tough no matter what professor you have. Honestly the best advice I could give to anybody that is struggling is to get Science Guyz. They are the reason why I passed with a B.
Absolutely love Gokal and I'm dying inside now that she's leaving. She made ochem very understandable and I love her teaching style (esp compared to hubbard). She wants you to understand and offered LOTS of practice problems that she created. She used the PLAs during class which helped so much. Only issue was I never got email responses from her
Condescending, rude. Gave non-honors class the honors exams and was surprised there were complaints and was happy with the test average of 57. You will have to self-teach with the textbook, in-class she gives a few practice problems that barely cover the text and are graded. Said students will only do well if they come to office hours. Don't take.
The teaching style of this professor is horrible. She does not lecture and she is not helpful. She grades on accuracy and makes you read the textbook before class to teach yourself to complete a worksheet in class. You can have your hand raised for the whole class with no help because there are only a few TA's.
I am currently in Ochem 2 and I would sell my soul to be in her class again. She is so helpful and cares about getting you a good grade. She expects you to read from the textbook before class so she can go more in-depth during lectures. I never got a good grade in gen. chem but I got an A+ in her class. The bad reviews are from students who failed.
Dr. Gokal is a great professor and explains concepts clearly. The class is challenging, but Dr.Gokal connects the fundamentals to make it easier to understand. As long as you do the textbook problems and listen to the lecture, you should be fine
She's a great professor & explains organic chemistry very clearly. You HAVE to study well and read the textbook, you really can't pass without doing the practice problems. Her exams are mostly open responses, which is good because you get a lot of partial credit points. Ochem is hard at UGA regardless, but she really breaks concepts down.
This class is difficult to adjust coming into college with no AP credit or not having taken chemistry in a while. While it is difficult, Dr. Gokal does a great job of communicating outside of class and providing flexibility for her office hours to go over material. Although the pacing of the class is fast, she does her best to keep you on track.
OChem is brutal and incredibly time-consuming no matter who you take it with, so I really can't complain about Gokal. She creates organized, legible notes for every unit. I wish that she picked out certain textbook problems for us to practice rather than just telling us to do textbook problems, when there were about 400 per exam.
Dr. Gokal is your BEST opportunity to do well in ochem. She is extremely knowledgeable about the material and in her office hours she is very helpful in creating up any questions you might have. Also, the tests are graded very fairly.
Dr. Gokal is a brilliant professor. You will spend most of your time studying the material outside of class, but she will give outstanding lectures to help filter the material that you need to know for the test. Also, her office hours are very helpful as well. Science Guyz tutoring pairs greatly with Gokal's teaching style, so I recommend it.
She is a phenomenal teacher, and probably the best O-Chem professor there is. You still have to read the textbook and put a lot of work in, but she is very helpful in lectures and office hours, so definitely go to those. She makes it doable to do well in a tough class.
Dr. Gokal is the best organic chemistry professor at UGA. She cares for her students deeply & is very clear as to what she expects from students. She always makes herself available for office hours, reviews over past exams, or even if you just want to chat about your progress over the semester. She really gives her students the chance to succeed.
Awesome professor lectures were extremely helpful and she was very flexible with her office hours outside of what was on the syllabus.
Dr. Gokal was hands down the best professor I have ever had at UGA. If you put the work in and did the book problems before coming to class, her lectures were amazing. This class is extremely difficult, but if you put the effort in on your end, Dr. Gokal helps you and makes getting an A on the tests possible. Highly recommend if she is an option.
Dr. Gokal is the best professor I've had at the University of Georgia! She is very intelligent and is able to dedicate some one-on-one time with her students to make sure that you are understanding the topic. Doing some reading on your own before the lectures is important because she really builds off of a basic understanding of the textbook.
