Wow. Thankfully I did not have the same experience the other posters had. I admit, in the beginning, the lecture notes were a bit difficult to follow but after making adjustments, I felt the notes were easy to follow in time for MT2. I don't think the class was that difficult. Besides, this is a univeristy, we shouldn't expect this to be easy.

I highly disagree with the first 2 posts. The tests are based SOLELY on the notes and this entire class only focuses on animals! Exams are really simple if you really know your stuff from the lectures. Lab reports are long but graded pretty easy and generally help your grade. Dr. Hovey did a really good job for his first quarter here! Fairly easy A

It's true that he expects a lot from his students. But his tests weren't too hard and his lectures are very clear. He podcasts as well. He loves helping students and will talk to you for longer than necessary to explain the answer. The lab section is quite tedious though.

Tests based only on lecture, so they're VERY FAIR. Such a great and funny guy; made lecture interesting and loves to talk. :) Labs were long and kinda boring/tedious though. Was the only thing that sucked. Otherwise, Russ (like a big kid) made up for that. :) Final was 12 pgs, and didn't take most people the whole 2 hrs. Podcasting REALLY helpful!

Very approachable & fun guy. Next to Famula, easily my fav ANS professor. Lectures are ppt & organized. All exams are fair. Labs, lab h/o's, and paper sucked. Otherwise, it was pretty cool. Go to lecture b/c he draws things that you need to know on the exam. Pay attention to small details for multiple choice questions & know structure vs function.

Russ is a super nice guy! But his lectures are a bit disorganized. There are just way too much things going on during lecture that makes it hard to follow. Tests are extremely difficult and long. Labs are sort of boring. I like the induced lactation project, but having to do chores at 7am is such a pain, especially during winter!

Great class, Awesome professor! He really cares about his students. If you have any complaints/issues , voice them early! Site close up and it'll force you to really pay attention. Focus on structure and function!!! Really great course.

Russ was fantastic, I admit that lactation is a boring subject, but he really did do his best to make sure you understood everything really well. Labs were boring and long, but he was super approachable and willing to help with everything. Plus he's just really fun to talk to :D

Took Russ for ANS1 and I absolutely love his class. His lectures are sort of disorganized, but he makes it very fun to learn and his tests are fair. 10/10 would take again for any subject he teaches

I am so glad that Professor Hovey decided to teach ANS001 and giving me and a ton of students such an amazing start for our animal science major. He starts off every lecture by introducing an animal that would probably kill you in Australia and seems to be really passionate about teaching. Amazing professor!

Dr. Ozzie is great! He tries to teach you as much as he can in the short quarter - which will be helpful in the future but means there is a lot of information to know for tests. Definitely need to study for his tests but they aren't too bad. Study for the lab quizzes and review alot for the lab practical!!

Dr. Hovey is great. I am a freshman so i started the year off very bad. I got an F on my first midterm. Luckily there are 2 midterms, a final and a lab final which makes it easy to bring your grade up as long as you do well. ALL of the test questions are from his lectures which makes it very easy to do good on the tests if you pay attention.

Very entertaining lectures, though it is definitely a lecture-heavy course. He did not use the textbook, the material was entirely dependent upon what he said in class. Also, he used the i-clicker for attendance and participation points. However, he made concepts very simple and it was easy enough to pass. Lots of memorization.

I loved my very first quarter because of him! There was never a day where the class was boring. You can tell he loves what he does by his lectures. He tends to give out so much information, love the passion but it means more to memorize. Not a difficult class. Ohh and he gave us ice cream made with love by our TAs on the last day of lecture!

LOVED this professor. He brings his dog to class, he's Australian, and he's hilarious. I took ANS001 with him, and it was his first time teaching that class, and he did a spectacular job. He also took videos of class every day, so if you missed it, you could just catch up by watching the video online!

He's awesome! very approachable and helpful in office hours. you need to memorize every single detail in his lectures because nothing is off limits for the midterms. Midterms are hard but manageable, papers are easy. Just dont turn them in a second late- I was 30 seconds late bc internet was slow and i was docked 25% and got a 74 instead of a 99.

Dr. Hovey is such a great professor. He is super knowledgeable and respected. He knows just about anything about any animal and gives you real world insight into how they work. In ANS1 generally there is a different animal or group of animals he talks about that corresponds with the lab. There are two midterms and a final and two super easy papers.

Dr. Hovey is such an amazing professor. He is very knowledgeable and definitely cares about the well being of his students, and wants you to succeed. Lectures were always amazing, but you have to pay attention because the tiniest details can show up on an exam. His tests are entertaining, they'll give you a chuckle or two. 100/10.

I really loved Professor Hovey!! He is such an amazing guy and his lectures were really entertaining. If yoy don't go to lecture you can watch the videos which are super helpful. 10/10 man, 10/10.

Slides are sometimes out of place but hes a good professor and you will learn from him. I didnt really use the textbook, kinda wished I opted out so that I couldve saved money. The labs are interesting and fun.

Dr. Ozzie is the man of the animal world. He is the most passionate lecturer in his field and does it with a huge smile on his face and a sense of humor. This professor will inspire you beyond just the classroom setting. Just know you HAVE to keep on top of your studying and you will not want to miss his lectures. I highly recommend.

Professor Hovey does a good job of keeping you entertained during lecture, he brings his dog to lecture sometimes and the labs are very fun definitely a favorite.

One of the best professors I ever had! Really cares about helping students, and inspires you to think ahead to the many possibilities of your future. Has fun, interesting lectures; never tests what wasn't covered, and has good humor. He is patient, respectable, and accessible, sometimes extends office hours to explain material if needed.

All of the lectures were recorded and posted online but the lectures were fun to attend. The class is a lot of memorization mainly. Labs were super fun. Each lab started with a short 10 question multiple choice quiz. 2 papers to write, all the content in the exams was covered either in lecture, lab, or in 'assigned' reading. Fun activities as well!

Dr. Ozzie is an amazing professor all the way around. Gives great (and at times, highly entertaining) lectures, is very accessible, provides great support, and makes it clear what he expects of you. The class is not difficult, but be prepared to stay on top of the material. Exams are exactly what is covered in lecture and lab. Very fun class!

Best professor even though he might be all over the place on some lectures. Hes very sweet and funny . Midterms are okay . Lab is amazing ! Wish I could retake the class.

He is an amazing professor. I dont know what else you could ask for. His lectures are interesting and funny. Everything he lectures on is literally what the multiple choice midterms and final are. He has a good personality and cares about his students. I love this prof and I have learned so much from him. Cant wait to take ANS 2 with him!

Dr. Hovey is a great lecturer and the labs were very fun especially if you are interested in the topic. However, make sure to know the itty bitty details for the final to get a solid A in the class. Some information and numbers in the lab manuals and the lectures didn't match up, but it was pretty straightforward overall. Some TAs also grade harder

Dr. Ozzy is a super interesting lecturer. He goes a little off the lecture slides, so don't try to follow them too much when taking notes. He genuinely seems to care about his students. Labs are super fun too! The two papers weren't too hard, the midterm and final weren't bad. The lab practical was nerve wracking, but overall wasn't extremely hard.

I love Dr. Ozzie. His lectures are very fun and he cares so much about his student's success. He spent hours with me after class working on horse nutrition. Dr. Hovey is truly an incredible professor! His lectures are engaging and interesting and the exams are fair, just be sure to study plenty and memorize lots of small details (Quizlet helps!). Textbook was not used much but can be useful if you want to supplement lecture material. Definitely take him if you have the chance!!

Russ an awesome teacher. Had him for ANS 1 a while back too. He certainly expects a lot more out of a class of seniors, which is totally understandable. Lectures can get intense and confusing at times, but Russ is always happy to answer questions in detail. Tests have extensive short answer portions, and (imo) difficult. Really fun class, though!

I loved taking ANS 1 with Dr. Hovey, he definitely keeps your attention for the entire lecture and is very clear during his lectures. He uses visuals and diagrams on the board to help explain things. He is a bit fast during lectures so you definitely have to keep up but he just wants to spread as much information about the animals as he can!

Dr. Hovey is a wonderful professor and I loved this class. Just make sure you take good, thorough notes in lecture and you should do fine. Labs are by far the most fun Ive ever had in a class. Anyone whos interested in animals will enjoy this class.

Professor Hovey is awesome, but it is not an easy A. You have to study your butt off if you want to do well in the class. He is funny and makes the lectures enjoyable. There are two assignments that you should not write off because they definitely help your grade out. Other than that I would definitely recommend the class, but just know it is hard.

Dr. Hovey is an amazing professor! Every exam is based off lecture and there are no surprises; it is a very straight forward class. He is also willing to answer questions in class and is very friendly.

Lectures were entertaining and a highlight of my week. The papers were graded hard. Make sure to write scientifically (clear & concise). I also loved lab! Working with the animals is a great experience. If I wasn't taking Chem and had more time to study I probably would've made an A. Probably studied apprx. 3 hrs for each MT. Great class!

Great instructor. Engaging in lecture and patient to boot. Your best bet is to record every lecture - and then transcribe it as a means of studying. It won't be clear what's important for an exam so assume that EVERYTHING is important! Prepare to spend lots of time studying but to have a good understanding of the subject matter in exchange.

Russ is one of the most caring professors I've had at Davis. I had him for ANS1 and again for ANS124. He assigns a lot of scientific papers to read and personally shows up to each discussion section. He tries to be very approachable; that said his class is difficult and he doesn't offer much guidance on exams, but he honestly deserves a raise.

His actual lectures were so fun to attend. The midterms are pretty straightforward but the thing that lowered my grade a lot was the "practical part" of the final. I recommend studying a lot for that one. The labs are so fun because you get to interact with animals hands-on. He is such a good professor when entering your first year of college.

Prof Hovey was super great about fall quarter being online. Sent out so many resources, was available for questions and even adopted some class animals. Labs were definitely the hardest part and it's just a lot of memorization. Weekly quizzes in lab, scientific paper analysis and 2 midterms + the final. Definitely recommend!

This is a pretty easy class if you put in the work. Professor Hovey is very direct with his expectations for his students and makes himself available after class during office hours. Overall, this was a pretty interesting class. I highly recommend taking it.

His tests were pretty straight forward, but he gives very little instructions about the test (We don't get to see it even after) It wasn't an easy class, lots of paper reading and memorization. Best professor I've ever had. Had him last quarter online due to COVID. He made lectures as entertaining as he could and put in a LOT of extra hours to make the class as engaging as possible. Even sent each of us a gift at the end of the quarter. Not too difficult but I learned a lot. I can't wait to take him in person!!!

First quarter here at UC Davis and Professor Hovey was my favorite so far. I didn't have to read a single page from the textbook because his lectures are so thorough and he's super passionate. He won't test you on anything that isn't on the lab manuals or taught in lecture. The class has a very easy workload and it's easy to get a high grade.

He has great lectures but I would not recommend skipping them because so much of what he adds to the notes is written on the board. A lot of the questions on the midterm come directly from things he mentioned in lecture that aren't emphasized so reviewing for his exams is best done by going to OH or rewatching his lectures.

Fun prof + class! Lab attendance req but lab quizzes are excused if u fail ur COVID symptom survey. Uploads lec ppts but leaves blanks so u have watch lec for all the info. Lec recordings are online! Textbook's supplemental, I didn't end up using it. Lab hw is kinda dense but hands-on stuff w/ animals makes up for it. Also offers extra credit. :)

Dr. Ozzie is the best prof I've had in my first fall quarter at UC Davis. I could truly feel his incredible enthusiasm for animals, and he made me more certain about my major and future career paths. He is more like a leader who guided me through the animal learning field. I will definitely take his class again if I have a chance in the future.

Incredible professor, he was one of my first here at UC Davis and I honestly can say he will still be one of my favorites by the time I graduate from here. It was difficult to get his class as a non-animal sci major and I can see why. His passion shines through his hilarious jokes and entertaining lectures. I would recommend his class to anyone.

The first professor I had when I got here, and will probably be my favorite one. He is so funny and super passionate, truly inspiring for anyone just starting out college life. The class itself is super lecture heavy, so you HAVE to take notes and study to succeed. There was lots of material to cover, but with good studying, it is a great class!

This class was so fun! I loved the labs and Professor Hovey never failed to crack funny jokes during lecture. I will say, his class is very lecture heavy with few homework assignments. The only homework was for lab. His tests, though long, are straight forward. He was a joy to have as a professor. I hope to find more like him in my next years here.

Hovey was amazing. You can just tell he loves his job and loves teaching. He made my class fun and interesting and made lectures interesting. The labs were fun and pretty easy, a summary paper over the week's scientific journal each week and lab assignments/quizzes that were generally easy to do if you do your part.

I'm not an animal science major, but I really enjoyed this class. The lectures are pretty good. Dr Hovey goes at a decent pace and writes things down on the board. The labs are very hands on and great for anyone who enjoys working with animals. The textbook is not mandatory, but is very useful.

Professor Hovey is like the Australian fun uncle I never knew I needed. He's a fantastic lecturer who made me excited about Animal Science (which is important, as an Animal Science major). Lab is fun most of the time, and be prepared to get IN and DIRTY with the animals!! Class was hard, however, but I was happy to be putting all that work in.

LOVED Prof. Hovey, his class was my favorite all quarter. Lectures are always clear and interesting; his exams are very reflective of what we learn so don't expect any tricks from him. Took him for Fall22. Super fun and engaging lectures. Sometimes Sunny makes an appearance too which makes things more entertaining. Lectures can be a bit confusing or messy. Taking good, organized notes and rewatching lectures helped me. Structure your notes for each animal, the sooner, the easier.

Amazing lecturer!! Midterms and finals were all mc but grading is NOT curved. I believe achieving an A is just a measure of how much you studied. All content in tests were covered in lecture, super fair game. Grading percentage is somewhat unfair because what weighs the most in ur grade are the research papers. A proffessor who truly cares!!

Hovey was my FAVORITE. He gives you a textbook to reference from but NOT A SINGLE TEST had information on it from the textbook alone, it was all from lecture. There are also lab quizzes from long lab manuals but the questions are usually pretty straight forward. It's a lot of memorization but go to lecture, take thorough notes and you'll succeed.

Hovey is a very entertaining lecturer, he will explain everything in detail if you ask. He is very helpful, he is willing to answer your questions even in a class full of 400 students. He does talk quickly, and his handwriting can be iffy at times, but it's still manageable. His TAs are also amazing.

Dr. Hovey is extremely passionate about animal science and it shows during his lectures. He is super fun and the lecture material is clear. But for the writing assignments you kinda just have to hope you have a chill TA or those will tank your grades. 2 midterms. 1 final. about 6 writing assignments. LABS ARE SUPER FUN TOO!!

Such a great professor! There are 6 paper assignments you'll have to complete, but their pretty easy to get through. 2 midterms, 1 final, all lecture related so don't worry about the book unless you want to cross reference. Labs were my favorite part because of how hands-on they are and you'll work with 9 different animals throughout the quarter!

He is an amazing teacher; Probably the best at the school.... All of the lecture are recorded but is mandatory to go to the labs for points. The TA's won't reply to your emails, so go straight to the professor with questions. Although the book does help get into more details the tests are only based on lecture. Like it if it was helpful....

Having taken ANS2 and 41, if you pay attention in ANS1, you will be set for at least two quarters with As. Just rewatch lectures to study and take notes= easy A. MAKE A SPREADSHEET- totally worth it. Labs are so fun and easy depending on the TA- we always finished early! He sometimes would go off on some controversial topics but otherwise great

Dr. Hovey was a great teacher and was very engaging. He's also very funny! The labs for this class were super fun. We had weekly homework that was pretty light and generally useful. The class requires memorization for tests, but the tests are all reasonable. I loved this class and learned a lot. Couldn't recommend more!

Hovey was great! Everything is in lectures and you really need to listen to get what you needed for the tests. Labs were super fun and tests weren't too bad if you really studied. A good amount of memorization and I was annoyed at some of the test questions being deceiving but otherwise pretty straightforward.

Be prepared for how big the class is and for labs. He has 2 midterms which are easy if you study everything (i learned the hard way) his final is very very long so I'd honestly say whatever you think WILL be on the midterm/final theres a pretty decent chance that it won't be on there. Overall fun lecturer/professor. Definitely would take again.

Amazing professor he really knows what he is talking about in lectures and goes at a good pace. The scientific papers that we had to read for assignments were a bit tedious but nothing impossible. Highly recommend attending his office hours, he is very engaging.

Best professor I have ever had. Love his class and all his animals that make appearances (Dogs, Horses). Everything is very clear and easy to understand, just a lot of studying. The 8am lab was the best part of my mornings.

This class was so much fun and absolutely amazing. You can tell Dr. Ozzie really loves what he does and cares about his students so much. His lectures are interesting and the assignments aren't bad. The tests do have lots of trick questions. If you read carefully and make flash cards you should be okay because its a lot of memorization.

I didn't personally enjoy Dr. Hovey's lecture style as it was kind of all over the place, but that could be due to the sheer amount of content covered in the course. Canvas is also unorganized. Exams were not too bad, just a lot of memorization. He is accommodating and accessible outside of class.

Dr. Hovey is extremely passionate for lactation - he's always happy to help students and could talk about it all day long. His enthusiasm goes right into detailed, interesting, and inspiring lectures and labs. I got a lot out of this class. He does expect a lot from students - exams are tough and there is a lot of writing - but it's worth it.

ABSOLUTELY ADORE DR OZZIE!! The tests were overall not that hard if you rewatch the lectures, and the paper assignments are sort of easy points (depending how harshly your TA grades them), so it's not too hard to maintain a good grade in the course. The lab keychain was fun to keep at the end too!

Dr. Ozzie is an AMAZING professor. His lectures are clear but sometimes will go off topic for a bit, but overall a very engaging professor and will stop to address a student's question when raised. Tests and midterms are lecture heavy so study and go over notes, quizlets, flashcards or form study groups.

Very nice professor kept the lecture engaging. The exams were all based on the lectures so if you study well you'll get a good grade. We had 5 papers and he walked us through each one so it wasn't to bad, it was the main part of your grade.

Hovey definitely cared about all his students and made sure his lectures were entertaining. There's a lot of information that needs to be memorized in order to do well in the midterms. But as long as you study hard and participate in lab, you'll do good!

Make sure to not let his fun personality cloud your judgement, take the class seriously, getting behind on early lectures is a death sentence. I really enjoyed the labs and the lectures, which made th class much easier for me, but I recommend starting a study group, it helped me retain information and gain notes on things I missed in lecture.

The scientific papers were a bit annoying to have to do bi-weekly, but the labs and lectures were always very engaging. I enjoyed the class as a freshman, even if it was hour heavy on my schedule.

Dr. Hovey makes lecture fun as he interacts with the class. Lab is fun, hands on and there's quizzes based on that week's topic. There's homework assignments that are heavy on reading and they're strict on the their tardy policy even if its exactly 11:59pm. Their exams are material heavy, from the lectures, lab manuals and the textbook.

Dr. Russ is the BEST. His class is not an easy A, but that's because he really wants you to understand the material instead of just skating by. He's super passionate about helping students succeed and will go out of his way to make sure you reach your goals. He's always there to break things down and help when you need it.

Hovey is an incredibly sweet professor, very funny, and the material is all quite easy. The only problem I had with him is that after midterm 1 lecture seemed to be a little random and he LOVES his cows so be ready to study that. All you have to do is memorize the material and you should be good. I hate studying which can be seen with my grade.

Dr. Hovey is truly such a sweet professor! He's super easy to talk to (Australian accent) and clearly has a passion for what he does. His tests are pretty long and were a bit difficult as it covered so many concepts, but they were all multiple choice. Make sure you prepare for pre lab quizzes and study before tests and you'll be fine!

Hovey is great! I haven't had an ANS professor since that has been so entertaining and fair to students. The exams can have a few tricky/specific questions, so I didn't do that well on one of my midterms, but I was still able to get an A. The course is designed with freshmen in mind and it's a great introduction to Animal Science. I learned a lot!

By far my favorite professor I have had! He genuinely wants his students to do well. His lectures are funny and he is passionate about animal science. Lab is mandatory and there are weekly pre and post lab quizzes based off the lab manual material. The midterms are mostly lecture material. If you study, you will do well and understand everything.

SUCH a fun class! everything you need to know for midterms/final is stated in lecture at least once. however, the assignments are unrelated to lab/lecture/test content (you have to read and understand scientific journals), and the rubrics arent published until afterwards + some of the info he asks for is very specific. other than that, loved it.

Such an amazing prof. Dr Hovey explains his lecture material thoroughly and is happy to answer any questions. IMO tests and assignments were easy as long as you understand what he covers in lecture. Labs were incredibly fun and engaging. I would recommend anyone to take this class for GE credit, even if they aren't an ANS major. I learned so much!!

Dr Ozzie is an exceptional lecturer, it didn't feel like a task attending them. All lectures are recorded, and his exams were very straightforward. I LOVED the labs, make sure you go to those to better absorb the lecture contents. TAs can play a pretty big role in your grade bc they grade all the pre and post labs as well as the assignments.
