Really odd, tough but fair tells you what you need to know, good explainer
a bit loony, but a great teacher. i learned a lot.
Bit of an oddball, but very good teacher. I learned a lot from him.

He prepares you for his tests, he is fair, and very entertaining
Funny and never boring. hell make fun of u. know ur stuff for the hard tests

fair, as long as you pay attention + do the work he is an awesome teacher
HARD....don't take his class
Degrading, Cynical, Hostile. Do anything to get out of his class
An awful teacher. He expects you to participate in class, but when you do, he h
meanest man ever- just bitter at life! I hate him
Test are way to hard and confusing
His goal in every class is to make at least one person cry
yeah, get him, if you want a grade below D...
dont listen to people who say hes mean.they have no sense of humor.great grading

Good teacher if you pay attention...study for the tests and you will be fine
Not helpful at all but does know his material..Don't take him
Loves to rip students apart, he makes the tests and subject extremely hard
great teacher, all you people who rated him need to get a sense of humor

QUIT YOUR WHINING! Go back to high school if it's too hard. He's funny, knows his stuff, and is fair.
This man should not be teaching, he is a mean person!
Great teacher. Absolutely loved his class.
This guy is, without a doubt, the worst teacher in the economics department. He has an annoying tendency to be hyper critical and sensitive. Expect to be insulted on an academic and personal level. This guy has no concept of human decency.
he is an old man with extremely dry humor, he is rude when he tries to be funny, classes are boring and tests are moderately hard
If you have taken economics before, he is not bad. For the people who replied that his class is too hard, they must be idiots, because if you expect to graduate from JMU you will be taking classes ten times harder than this one.
He is a great teacher. If you do the work you can get at least a B, but if you don't you're pretty much screwed. He's scary and hilarious, and probably will say something offensive every class. I loved him!
sketchy guy, intimidating, HARD AS **** TOO! If you want to get a good grade, DONT TAKE HIM!
he's a riot, says offensive stuff that will make u laugh or hate him. Will make cracks about your mother and just about everything else. If your a sensitive person don't take this class. Class is tough, but he does his best to help u do good.
okay okay-you have to have a sense of humor in this class-the tests are hard, but he does his best to help you out. pop quizes.
This class is so hard, the teacher is so confusing when he talked. He likes to make jokes in class but they aint funny. He talks alot, trust me, u will fall asleep. 2 exams, and final comprehensive. Hard as Hell. Dont take him if u are not talkative.
Knows his stuff, but not the best person to ask questions to. If you can get through his gruff persona, you really can learn something.
He has got to be one of the rudest people I have ever met. Class was hard, even for the business majors. Not easy to talk to and tests were impossible.
TERRIBLE teacher. Impossible. I had to drop the class. He is offensive and ****. He hates females and I hate him.
He is Hilarious!!! People who don't find him funny take life too seriously. He will work you hard, but you will walk away knowing A LOT! great teacher, but HARD class...he has a reason for everything though.
Class is hard, but micro is hard period. He's hilarious, however some people can't handle his humor cuz it can be offensive and sarcastic. He knows the material and teaches it really well. Tests are fair, if you study. Pop quizes, and some announced.
While he is funny at times, his humor is based on making fun of people. I don't like to ask questions because he'll answer it, but not until he has made fun of me first. If you can get past this, he does teach well and you will learn a lot.
This guy is really funny but it is because he is making fun of other people. Very intimidating in class no one wants to answer questions because he will ridicule you for it. Knows his stuff and will work you hard but is a very good teacher and a Sox fan
he knows his stuff. he can be intimidating in class, but underneath the facsade he wants to help you. crazy humurous guy, likes to joke, but some might be offended. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS, he will help you lots, but you have to read.
NOT an easy teacher, but he's hilarious and the class is worthwhile. Really knows his stuff and makes you think
his test are horrible...no matter how well you know the material, his wording is so weird you won't even know what he is asking for...odd man but entertaining none-the-less, don't take if you blush easily
First off, I love economics--but HE SUCKS AT LIFE. DON"T TAKE HIM! He makes you feel stupid to ask questions and his tests are impossible. I have yet to meet anyone from my class who liked his class/him personally. Do yourself a favor, DONT TAKE HIS
worst teacher i've ever had in my life. the tests are honestly impossible, even with studying for days upon end. he will confuse you in class like no other, make offending remarks and make you want to drop out of school!
This class is not as hard as everyone makes it seem. He does make you feel stupid and test are hard and he did throw chalk at the kid behind me BUT i got a B just by paying attention in class.
Blah, nice guy, but he has a hard time making this very hard class clear, try and avoid
OK, it's been almost 12 years since I had Russ for political economics but it was the best class I had at JMU. Yeah, he's difficult but econ is SUPPOSED to be difficult, and it was a fascinating class, both in material and structure.
Decent teacher. know your stuff well or you wont make it. class is interesting. 3 Tests determine 90% of grade.
You will either love or hate him, and he frankly won't care. The class is demanding, but you learn a LOT. Very quirky and spontaneous, class is interesting b/c of him, not the material. Grading system is AWESOME
I love econ, but this shmuck is EVIL!! His class is easy, but the book sucks, he makes you look stupid in class for asking questions, and when most people do poorly, he scolds the class for not asking questions. funny, but he is an elitist ****
i was too scared to ask questions, makes you feel like an idiot if you don't know what he's talking about, gives confusing lectures, tests are hard! he can be funny sometimes but it doesn't make up for his crappy, grumpy old man behavior.
Worst class, so hard. Tests are literally IMPOSSIBLE! do not take this class. he'll complain that no one asks questions but then if you do he'll say they're stupid questions.
read the book, know the definitions. TAKE YOUR TIME ON THE TESTS! questions are tricky. lectures are worthless but there's an attendance policy. class is funny because he is crazy and makes fun of everyone.
Exams are hard and tricky. Pretty interesting guy, says and does random funny things to keep the lectures entertaining. Try to avoid this class if you can.
i cant believe people are leaving such bad ratings!! he's SO entertaining, which is totally needed in econ. the subject is hard. get over it, its required. if you're SO easily offended you'll need a thicker skin for business anyway.
The most awful, dreadful teacher I have ever had. This man doesn't have a positive bone in his body. If the teacher is not happy about the material, do you think students want to learn it? No way.
Worst ever. Unapproachable. Confusing. Intimidating. Inappropriate. Made me want to cry.
Makes an easy class very difficult. Really mean to students, and everyone is afraid to ask questions. He thinks he knows a lot because he uses big words, but his understanding of economics is elementary at best. Avoid if possible.
horrible class, even worse professor. just an angry person overall, if your a marketing major dont even think about entering his class-he HATES mktg majors! STAY AWAY!
The ABSOLUTE WORST professor I have had in my JMU career. He is always angry and makes learning next to impossible. STAY FAR AWAY!!!!
He is very unapproachable and very irritable. He honestly hates what he does and wants to make everyone else miserable. This professor has to be the worst ever. He is constantly critical and could give 2 craps whether you pass or fail.
Silly Freshmen, his job is not to be your friend! He is very fair when it comes to grading and if you ASK for help he will give it to you. You fail this class and you are a moron who is not trying.
This guy is very entertaining. The material is hard ...dont blame the teacher... just study.
hmmmm this guy is interesting. Tests and quizes are very hard. However if you have taken macro then you should do fine through the first exam. After that it gets hard. If you do better on the second test, it takes the place of your first but thats impossible. VERY HARD!!! I wouldnt take him.
Go into this class knowing that you will work hard but his lectures and interesting. HE makes lots of jokes during class, dont be afraid to laugh. Tell him you hate the yankees and you are a democrat and you will do just fine. Tests are hard but fair.
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.... YUCK!
He is a good prof. a bit crazy. The class is challenging but not impossible. I got a B and didn't put forth much effort. 2 2pg essays. a midterm and a final each with 3 questions. Lets you know what he expects. A lot of reading but not too bad a class, don't need to have econ background to pass.
You sink or swim in his class based on whether you can write coherently (>=300 level) and/or grasp the geometric implications of the the various graphs and charts that he teaches in class but doesn't believe in (<=200 level). He's a wonderful teacher if you don't need to have things spoonfed to you.
class is very hard and his teaching is very misleading.
Are you kidding me? He's not supposed to be your friend and give easy A's. This is a hard class, no doubt about it, but the guy is hilarious. He will keep you awake with his yankee hating and other stuff he does. Tests are hard and I felt he did a good job going over the material and explaining it.
Certainly not the easiest subject area, but he is a pretty good teacher. Go to class, pay attention, work hard and study and you'll be fine.
hes a hardass, not for the faint-hearted...im an econ major with a 3.7 GPA within my major, yet i still couldnt grasp what he was saying (imagine dennis miller trying to explain econ..ouch)...uses big words just to feel good about himself i guess...he hates everything, especially president bush
Should not be a professor. Makes you feel dumb for asking questions and never agress with what you say. Can't explain material thoroughly so tests are nearly impossible and then blames you for the grades when it was his fault he can't explain. Only three quizzes count with two given 100s, still hard
He is the most negative professor I have ever had. He constantly talks about his personal life and how much it sucks. Not to mention all of the crap that is going on in his life, he is not a great professor either. He doesn't get students the benefit of the doubt and never seemed to know how to be helpeful.
He wonders why we don't ask questions...maybe because he makes everyone feel extremely stupid hoping to make himself feel better. He might seem funny at times, but his class isn't worth the laughs. If you don't have hours to spend devoted to this class--don't take it!! He loves to give take home assignments before breaks too! Isn't he wonderful?
prepare yourself to study like u've never studied before...his tests are impossible! Soo hard, but if you go to class, take good notes, and study for at least 24 solid hours for a test... you should be good to go.
This professor is impossible. I don't recommend taking him if your not an economics major. Even so, prepare to study your ass off for a 70 (if your lucky). His tests are rediculous and his attitude is unbarably annoying. DONT TAKE HIM!!
Beside for his flaming liberal views, I think he is a great teacher. He is very interesting and funny, and just makes you think before you ask something stupid
This is the type of prof. where you'll either like him or hate him. He has a wacky and random personality, which I enjoyed, but can imtimidate you if you don't understand something. It's not impossible to pass him and I think he gives a curve. I started off with a low C before the final and ended up with a C+ for a final grade in the course.
Ah, Russ the Red. Man, he was FUNNY, and the class was a heck of a lot of reading but wow did it feel worthwhile at the end. But seriously, it's worth taking just for the 8 pages of funny quotes you'll get from him by the end. My brain hurt every single day after leaving his class -- but it was an accomplishment.
Jeez this guy is funny. He hates the world, with his only pleasures being beer and Golf. It's hard to make econ easy, but he does make it fun... for him. just be along for the ride, and pray he doesnt pick on you. Notes are hard to get down, so when he gives you time write them, get them down fast! book marginal in value, tough attendance policy.
if you havent taken macro i wouldnt recommend taking him. however, he is hilarious and tends to piss people off easily making class even more eventful/entertaining. this quote explains it all: Question from student: So the product X must suck, right? Like no one wants it. Smith: LIKE YOUR SISTER!!
Probably one of the best professers I had at JMU. His political views were opposite mine and most of the class, but he really made you think. If you spoke in class, you had better bring a good answer.
Political Economy is a tough class to understand and extremely difficult to get an A. I managed to do both because I tried my hardest to "fit" into his teaching style. Try to say something half-intelligent every class. Just one thing can make the difference when he's considering your grade. Most importantly, don?t take his insults seriously.
Political economy was the best class I ever took!
russ smith retired around 2008, but for the record, best teacher of political economy (which is not the same as economics) in the state of VA in the 1990s/aughts. anyone who disagrees has either a political bug up their butt or did badly and didn't understand why.
