Turney is one of my favorite teachers at UNF. He incorporates humor in his lectures. I would enroll in another course he instructs.

I don't know how anybody could say an unkind word about this guy. Not only is he the kind of teacher who realy makes you think, he has a great body and a drop dead gorgeous smile.

We did a lot of in class exercises that seem very elementary - skits etc. You don't learn from them.

Turney is pretty offensive and teaches students that its okay to be rude about the religious beliefs of others. He does a lot of class excercises and gives your papers back the day the next one is due so you have no chance to better yourself.

I had him for themes and types and he was awesome!!! I would take him for something else if I could, but I don't think he teaches anything else. I would definitely reccomend him.

Very engaging teacher. He keeps class interesting and anyone has an honest chance of doing well in the class. He's really good about helping you out outside of class if you need it. Overall good professor.

Turney has remained my favorite prof. throughout college. Likes to play devil's advocate and make you think. Have an open mind in this class. He wants to come off as a tough guy, but he's really a teddy bear. Very fair and always willing to help.

I like him a lot. He is very nice, funny, and interesting. People usually like him or they don't. I wish I could have taken more of his classes.

Russ is the best! He is funny, relates things to today, and he is very down to earth. He only had three papers, but a few books that you need to read. His class discussions are good, very heated and debatable. I would recommend him to anyone.

Awesome professor. Chooses texts that are interesting and does a great job of pushing class discussion. I found his class to be quite enjoyable. I would not recommend for people who do not do their work, due to the fact that he will call on you repeatedly until you start doing your reading.

The best english teacher I have ever had. I never liked english until his class. I tried taking him for LIT but they changed his schedule on me. I highly recommend him, you will actually learn in his class.

I loved this class. Russ is very friendly and incredibly intelligent. Before this class I'd never gotten a B on any paper but on papers 1 & 2 I got Bs. But, for each student he types up a critique page that is incredibly helpful. I learned more in this class than in any other english class here.

God Russ is awesome. Take his class and SPEAK UP! He likes that. If you're quiet then he picks on you so get interested in the topic and you'll be fine. HIGHLY recommend.

Everyone who is talking bad about him is obviously just trying to ger through college and not experience any challege. He is an amazing professor. Every paper he gives at least a page of feedback. Always willing to help if it is needed outside of class. He picks very interesting text such as Fight Club and Maus. He likes to hear everyones opinion no matter how right or wrong. Very positive person. I loved his class so muchmy friends and I are taking another one he teaches next semister. He is an inspiration

Russ is an amazing guy. He has a great sense of humor even at 8 in the morning! Enjoys hearing everyone's opinions and makes an effort to get to know his students. Always gives great feedback on papers and is extremely helpful. Group presentations are always a blast with him, especially the drama performance. Also, reading material is interesting.

I loved his class! He's funny and makes class discussions interesting. The way he analyzes the text and shows you things from different perspectives is really cool. Class participation is important and he is very helpful by writing comments on your papers to help you improve on the next one.

He is funny, smart, and intelligent but he grades very strictly. ****ing Charles Dickens couldn't get an A in this class. There are 4 papers, the last one has to be 8-10 pages, and you have to present 2 to the class. Take this class if you want to learn, but not if you want an A.

He is a great teacher! He is really helpful during class and outside of class you can email him and he responds quickly. He is always willing to help you out. He is a great person and really cares about his students. You can make an A in his class if you work hard and put time into each essay!

The truth! Attendence is a must... due to the many quizzes you will have...he is cute in a dick buttkiss way from How High...I write pretty damn well, but i mean come on will someone who made an A in his class post for encouragement because I know i don't have an A. He is weirdly interesting... just goodluck with this one...

Turney's class is a lot of fun but also a lot of work if you want an A. He's easy to talk to, although a bit intimidating at first. Smart, funny, and looks like he should be teaching football rather than english. he does a lot of group work and expects you to participate.

one of the best teachers i have had sense i was in college. not the easiest class, you get the grade you deserve, but he makes everything very easy to understand. overall it was a great class and turney is one funny guy

Russ is somewhat of an ass, and he will tell you. He is concerned with you improving. CLASS attendance is a must. great english teacher. makes it interesting. Very fair and lots of fun. Very sarcastic rude guy that you love to listen too!

great teacher.. while some posts are less than encourging.. i loved his class! (yes.. both times.. in enc 1101 and lit 2110). he works to bring out the best in us. expect a lot of work to earn a's on your papers. it takes time! quizes are DAILY in 2110 but not so much in 1101. if your up for a challenge writing wise.. russ is the professor for you

WARNING: you will get the grade you deserve...take that however you please. Russ is always ready and willing to help and you can disregard the saying that there is not such thing as a dumb question...he will let you know that you're stoopid (ha ha) just kidding. He is into class participation and you better have your books!

AWESOME teacher. He was always willing to help. You can't write his papers the night before but he is a fair grader. Studies really unconventional things (we evaluated my humps as poetry). It is a very discussion based class. Great professor

I never skipped a class. It was work but work I was excited to do because it's a different take on everything. I HEART RUSS!

I made an A in his class. He was the reason I changed my major to education. His teaching will make you want to be a better person. The reading is cool, we read comic books! You can write your papers on anything you read, you choose the topic. He does grade hard, but an A is not impossible. Kind of a d*** but he knows it. Best professor at UNF!

he's very funny. he's a hard grader. and will push you, but it benefits you in the end. i have his class right now. you should go to class every day. he's kind of an ass.. but in a fun way. you'll seriously LOVE him. he has the best stories. just check your blackboard EVERYDAY!!

The ability to create cohesive and effective arguments is the most useful skill you can pick up in life, and Russ is the HUGE on this. Take this class if you wish to better yourself as a thinker and a writer. I came into this class thinking I was a great writer and left an even better one. A++!

Russ was an excellent teacher and friend. He was always there to listen to me, and available for advise always! He as a prof was appealing to us as college students because he saw things from our perspective, and treated us like adults. He is a hard grader, but very motivational!I would definately recommend him for any Eng class!

I had Russ for both ENC1101 and LIT2110.. I haven't attended UNF since 2004, but he was, and remains, my favorite teacher. He'll challenge you and make you think for yourself. He's always eager to get to know his students and he's VERY helpful. If you ever need help in his class, LET HIM KNOW! He always made time & for that, I loved him!

russ is easily one of the best professors that i've ever had. he as an extremely sharp sense of humor and if you say something stupid he'll let you know. he really pushes you to dig deeper into the material and argues with you until you prove your point. he is awesome - take his class!

Russ is simply amazing. I had him for Lit 2000 and Lit 2932 and wish I could have him again! Pushes you to think outside of the box, extremely helpful. Very funny and makes you want to go to class.

Professor Russ is a trophy professor. He will push you to see things that are very outside of the box, so much so that you will amaze yourself when you think back on it. He assigns interesting projects, and loves to embarass class clowns. Every single class is like an episode of a TV show that you do not want to miss!

Russ is THE BEST professor UNF has to offer. He's super funny i had him at 8am and i never missed his class. He will make learning fun. take him as much as you can. I heart Russ!!!!

Homework every day of class and attendance is mandatory, but Russ is the greatest English teacher/professor I have ever had. I hope I can take him again one day. Very funny guy, very interesting class(even if you're TERRIBLE at writing like me)

Great teacher but if you get sick watch out, because he won't even accept doctor's notes. If you miss class, you miss turning in that day's homework and a quiz grade. grades really tough on papers but lets you know WHY in page-long comments. Makes you a better writer & thinker, assigns interesting reading but makes you work a lot in groups...

Russ is a GREAT teacher. I don't think he needed to make class mandatory because I attended every once with anticipation. Very understanding, hilarious, and has an interesting perspective on literature. The course covers modern literature - grades your papers based on improvement, and will tell you in detail why you got that grade. Take this class!

Russ is an amazing teacher. Every class is something new. He makes jokes all the time which help to make a boring class more interesting. The student is his main concern and he is willing to help you with anything you need. There is hw everyday and 5 papers to complete.

Russ is a really good teacher! He really knows his stuff and he helped my writing a ton. He does give a lot of homework though, and his papers are challenging. You have homework most everyday and 5 papers to complete. Definitely a good teacher!

Russ is a nice guy and really, truly cares, although he doesn't like to show it. Don't procrastinate and pay some attention and you'll get a C. Comics are good but essay are challenging but well worth the effort. Russ is the man.

Turney is an amazing teacher. Very clear discussions and assignments. Fair grader. Four papers. No midterm or final. ATTENDANCE REQUIRED. Can be very sarcastic at times, but in a funny, non-hurtful way. Very helpful. I highly recommend this teacher.

Really interesting class, and I hate everything about english. extremely helpful on writing improvement. No tests or final. Just 4 papers. He can be a bit critical on grading but still fair. Take him if you want help!

i had him for graphic literature and the books are really easy and interesting. if you dont like talking in class dont take him, he will always call on you and does group work everyday. We had to write two 5pg paper and 1 project. kinda tough on paper grading but overall a great teacher.

I've had Russ before for ENC 1101 and I thought he was funny and was very helpful when approached. I took him for LIT 2932 and these traits remained the same. He will help you even if you only email him. If you keep in touch he will become a good ally/friend. Totally recommend him for ANY English class.

He is a great professor. But don't go in thinking this is going to be an easy class. He gives quizzes on the assigned reading to keep students on the right track, and to help your grade (if you read). He does have you do two papers, which he does grade with a fine-tooth comb. However, he does help you out a lot. And "create your own comic"

Informative and very interactive with the class. Will more than likely make you talk, so drop the shyness. Sarcastic and funny. Can be slightly intimidating but as long as you show up and participate in discussion as well as do the readings, you're good. Gives extensive feedback on papers, which is great. Overall an interesting and engaging class.

Honestly, Russ is a great professor. At first, you will think he is intimidating and a smartass (which he is), but he can be approached! He is very helpful and provides a lot of feedback on papers. If you need improvement in writing, he's your guy! 6 books, 3 papers. Discussions. Would take Russ again in a heartbeat. Try not to fall in love ;)

He gives a ton of work; homework every night, but he is a great professor and he has really helped me improve my writing this semester. Do all the readings, homework, and show up to class and you'll do great.

Turney is a really great Professor. He's personable, easy to understand, practical and VERY helpful. He gave a full page typed of notes on our first papers so that our second ones could be better. The class really wasn't that hard. I would take any other class with him. He's really sarcastic, makes for some funny class conversations.

Best professor I've had so far at UNF. Tough grader but he teaches you everything you need to know and more. My writing has never improved so much in a single class. Every class is engaging and interesting, so it doesn't even matter that attendance is mandatory. Take Turney any chance you get.

Great teacher. Very funny; will have you laughing. I chose him for two classes this semester. He is extremely hot and very helpful. Well knowledged. Requires attendance to pass though because assignments are due daily. Lots of homework. If you are a skipper or slacker, don't take him. If you want to learn, take him.

Um..he was ok, not all that like these people claim. A lot of hw, every night which gets annoying fast. His grading made this class harder than my bio class. Who has a midterm, final, and two essays for a theatre course? Take Art Appreciation instead.

Took him for theater appreciate. Requires A LOT of outside class work, but is easy as long as you read the plays and do the assignments.

Really helpful and entertaining because he's very passionate about what he teaches. YOU HAVE TO READ THE PLAYS IN ORDER TO PASS! Participate as much as possible. If you have a question he stays after class to help you out. Gives out a lot of outside work. The only down side is that he hates musicals.

Great sense of humor, hilarious. Read 3 assigned books throughout the semester but they were comics so it was easy stuff. Most of the time gives small quizzes on assigned reading just to check if you read. About 3 papers here and there, nothing thats unachievable. Would recommend!

Russ is amazing! He's very funny and sarcastic. For this class, we read 3 books (two of which were graphic novels so they were really quick and easy to read) and wrote three papers. He gives great feedback on your work and he really wants you to succeed. Just go to class ready to think and discuss and you're good.

Turney gives HW every class and it's not graded on completion. It took me 3 hours to do twice a week. Honors English is definitely harder than 1143. He also grades class participation as 10% of your grade which I hate. However, the texts were fun and he is pretty funny. HW everyday, three intense papers, and in class discussions often. Good luck.

Turney's sense of humor is a little off so don't take anything he says personally. He genuinely cares about all of his students and that he is getting through to them successfully. Extremely helpful. Would recommend. You will read 3 books, write 3 essays and have homework everyday. Will take some time and effort, but generally an easier class.

Great teacher, cares about all of his students. You will become a better writer after this class, as to get an A on any of the 3 papers it must be perfect. Pop quizzes about the books (easy books btw), 3 Papers, and other assignments here and there. HW was easy. TAKE IT, YOU WILL ENJOY IT. Oh, and do attend as well as participate. They are grades.

Overall great professor, gives lots of work but is an easy grader (except for major assignments). No tests, just a few major assignments over the term. Interesting lectures and is always willing to help (funny too).

You will definitely become a better writer in this class, he gives great feedback on all your papers. No test just quizzes on the 3 books (easy reads). There are assignments due almost every class but they are not too hard a all! He has a great sense of humor so the class is entertaining! Definitely would recommend him!

This was my favorite class of the semester. Russ is a really cool guy and genuinely cares about his students. His dry sense of humor is great and makes the class time fly by. He doesn't have any tests, he just assigns a few major assignments over the course and takes class time to explain them thoroughly. Would definitely recommend him.

He's a terrific teacher! After each paper, he types a full page of single-spaced notes on points he admires and areas he thinks you can improve. I've never had a professor do that before! It just shows he cares. Would definitely recommend to anyone engaging in any more English courses.

Have to read 3 books- 2 were comics & 3 papers + One impactful story in your life. Expect full page typed of homework each class. He cares about students but grades pretty harshly. Gives good notes on your papers but class seems pretty pointless- and its mandatory. Class consists of discussions on homework, short lessons + reviewing others papers.

Russ came in to teach our class halfway through the semester, I learned more from him in 3 weeks than I did the other professor. He grades our papers quickly and is always willing to help with whatever we need. I honestly would take another class with him given the opportunity.

He was fantastic!! I took this course over the summer and he made a three hour class really enjoyable. We read a lot of plays but not all of the class discussion is based on it. There are group performances but they aren't too bad and actually help make friends!

He took over for my Lit class over the summer and did an excellent job even though it was the middle of the semester. He is hilarious and really cares about his students. Just like any good professor, he makes you work, but he is always fair and is very upfront about what he expects from you. Great teacher.

You can tell he cares a lot about making his students learn and he provides lots of help and feedback. He gives plenty of time for drafting papers and asking for help before assignments are due. I am currently in his ENC 1143 class (Spring 2020). He is by far the best professor I have had, and such a respected and caring person. I have learned so much and have really been able to grow and break out of my shell in his class. I would send him my drafts and which a few hours he would have them back to me with feedback. I would 100% retake!

Russ is literally the BEST teacher at UNF. This is my second semester taking him and I would take another class of his if I could. His lectures are so interesting and he the most understanding professor I have met. He is extremely down to earth and has an amazing personality. Super sarcastic but always leaves you smiling when you leave class!

Prof. Turney allowed us to spearhead class conversations about interesting topics, which helped me develop the skills to have mature discussions with others. Additionally, my writing has improved tremendously. Russ was always willing to give help and gave a page of feedback after every paper. He truly cares about your success. Take this class!

Good professor! Don't take his jokes seriously...they can come off as rude but he means well. He is a good teacher and taught me a lot about writing clearly and effectively. I recommend taking him, but again don't take his jokes too seriously or you will be butt hurt.

Truly one of the best teachers I've had. Very fair with grading and asks the bare minimum of his students when it comes to tests and homework. So funny and kind.

I've taken him for 4 classes now & plan to again next semester. He's very kind, well-meaning, articulate, knowledgable, and very responsive with great feedback. Always available for conversations and willing to work with you to bridge any gap in understanding. He's tough and you MUST complete the reading, but I'm a better writer bc I took him.

I've taken Russ 6 times now. He's an excellent professor with high (but achievable) standards and is approachable, respectful, and always available to help. He's a little slow at replying to emails, sometimes 3-4 days, but he always gets back to you. DO NOT think you can skip the reading; your participation and quiz grade will suffer!

Russ is an amazing professor and very funny. For enc1143 he let us choose which topics we would be discussing in class which made it more enjoyable. We had four big writing assignments and an honors project but nothing during finals week which was great. I would 100% take his class again, he is very kind and always willing to help you.

Russ is a great professor who cares about his students. His jokes can come off as rude, but he means well. The workload is heavy, but he provides valuable feedback to improve your writing. Unstuck AI was a lifesaver for study prep.

He is a great professor! His class was pretty enjoyable and he usually had two assignments a week. He's very accessible outside of class and although he's a little bit intimidating, once you start talking to him he's really chill. My academic writing improved a lot through this course.

I love this guy so much, he's like a really cool father figure in a way. Everything he says is like a code, is he joking or is he serious? I never know. But that's why he's so silly! In class he's scary, but at office hours he's awesome!!!

He is really really really helpful with feedback. Dude told me in the nicest, most supportive and respectful way that my reading response essay was absolute garbage. And I honestly felt super appreciative of that. Through online correspondence he's super lovely. Idk what he's like in the classroom.

He's a cool dude, super laidback, genuine care for teaching, and funny. He's blunt sometimes but not hurtful. We read 3 books on our own and did 2 papers. A lot of his homework was to respond to a prompt or passage with a paragraph or two twice a week. He always gives specific details in his feedback. Also good at replying to emails
