Very knowledgable. Good examples. Easy to sit and listen to. Nice Guy
Very friendly, personable professor. Easy to talk to and helpful.
VERY INTERESTING CLASS... especailly for the liberals of the world. good teacher
This professor is very nice and very knowledgeable.
He's an excellent prof because he knows his stuff. Loved his class.
Nicest guy, very interesting class material, Does anything he can for students.
really nice guy, very sof spoken. hard to focus in class,
Very nice guy, offers tons of extra credit-no way you can't get an A
didn't really like him, he is boring, and goes off on tangents that no one gets
Great class, great techer, lots of extra credit.
unorganized, boring, didn't learn anything. Easy A, lots of extra credit
Tons of writing, not SWS, alot of work, teacher sort of boring
very unorganized, hard to undertand, gives a lot of extra credit, did not learnalot
very nice, last half gets hard but the final is fair, learned a lot
Nice guy, learned alot, tons of extra credit!! Fun Class
Very unorganized and unclear
A great introductory Prof, very knowledgable and makes good brownies. :)
Nice guy, great prof, entertaining, highly-knowledgable - loves his field
Really haven't learned anything new - very unorganized
Very nice guy! Sometimes loses control of class, but definitely a fav of mine!
Wonderful guy, friendly and easy to approach, enjoys his work and is fun!
Nice guy, can't control class, unorganized but tests are fair and is easy grader
A little absent-minded, but interesting, helpful, and a complete SWEETHEART!
Very Interesting! Tons of stories to tell from travel. Clear and willing to help
he's very helpful and patient
If we had more profs like this, the drop out rate wouldn't be so high!
Awesome, very helpful, approachable. Definately take him!!!
monotone, boring, didn't learn anything, but easy enough grade
tons of extra credit, scatter-brained, very nice
bends over backwards for his students. take him take him take him!!!
Class was not as informative as I had hoped, but he is a nice guy.

Nice guy, really cool, not very organized though. Not always sure where he was going with the class. Made everything easy, if you showed up half the time you'd do well. He also seemed to care, which was nice, and was flexable.
Great teacher, makes you sleepy though, nice guy but boring and kind of soft spoken, I wouldnt take his night classes, but a great guy and very helpful and tells you exactly what to expect on tests.
Nice guy. Gives tons of extra credit and really cares about his students. A little monotone, but grades easy. I would suggest to take him.
yuck yuck yuck... worst class I've taken.. didn't learn a thing
Very nice prof! Very calm and friendly. Always willing to help students and gives lots of extra credit. There is a lot of work assigned with this class, but it's interesting if you like Anthropology. I recommend him!
Prof Rhoads is a little vague at times, but he gives extra credit and is a really nice and funny guy. The class wasn't what I had expected, though. I expected a systematic, scientific approach to religon. He likes to explore the softer side...boring.
Very, very monotone. Like everyone else has said he gives a lot of extra credit. Make sure you read the books, otherwise your screwed for the tests, although he does discuss them, I found myself drifting off a bit.
Overall a great teacher. Classes are a little slow, but not too hard and he doesn't demand an overwhelming amount of work. Nothing intimidating about him.
Don't tell me this class ain't got no heart-You just gotta poke around
The class was sort of boring, but group activities are not my thing. He is an EXTREMELY experienced professor though, has a lot of answers. Material presentation could be more interesting though. Good for learning about ethnographies.
Seriously never been more bored in a class in my entire life. BORED TO TEARS. No joke, had to hold back the tears. Get the other prof.
GET SOMEONE ELSE!!! I'm not coming back next year partly becuase of problems I've had with him.
Not a hard professor at all, but he is so boring! Not in the normal boring way, but he has that sort of voice that will make you nice and sleepy. Very into ethnography, but not the best professor to teach research methods.
Boring! Very long winded as well. He had a lot of good to say but that sometimes gets lost amidst his rambles. Has lots of field experience. Often "runs out of time" in lectures and assignments get pushed back later and later. We ran out of time for our final presentations. Sometimes expects too much
This guy gives you a 5-page paper to write every week and still expects you to write a 15-page ethnography for the end of the semester. 6 credits worth of work for only 3 actual. Anthro research methods was limited to cultural stuff, so it's worthless unless that's your emphasis. He expects way too much. Just hope he isn't your advisor, either.
15 page ethnography is done throughout semester, first half of it is due at midterms, it is NOT difficult to do at end of semester. Weekly assignments easily if at times unclear. Very available for help on assignments. Class can be boring but he practically leads you through all assignments in class. Very knowledgable in Anthropology
he's an easy grader as long as you make it look like you're doing what he wants (i.e. "think critically") or if he gives you a suggestion on a paper, do what he says even if you think it's dumb or pointless-he will give you a good grade. lectures got boring at times, and he was very unorganized, but that was good-he extended due dates on assnmnts!
Interesting class, lots of videos. 1 midterm and a final but gives you the essay questions before hand so it is easy. No quizes, 4 short paper 2-3 papers that were easy. One project that was fun + you can work with a group. Overall, fun class, pretty easy but requires some work. Nice professor. You also have extra credit by going to different lect.
I liked professor Rhoads alot. He was very helpful and his grading was pretty easy. Class was a little boring at times but if you participate he'll notice. Assignments were easy for the most part.
Horrible. Expectations of the class unclear both to him and to the students, totally unorganized. Graded easily, but the stress for the class was absurd.
At first i had little interest in the class, but it ended up being pretty cool. Some of the lectures are boring, but others are pretty intesting. Pretty easy class overall, definitely a good teacher for Anthropology!
Unfortunately he's the only prof teaching this course - and it's a required course for ANT students. His expectations are very unclear-even when talking to him and asking questions. The class is almost useless unless you're studying the same things as him, as he doesn't seem to have a holistic grasp for the class. You just need to figure him out.
He really is a good teacher; he is laid back and relaxed during lecture, and he does all that he can to help the student. Study guides for his quizzes are very helpful. Even though he does not take attendance, it's better to go just because it can be a pain to catch up. In the night class, it's great to leave during the mid-break. He doesnt notice.
This ended up being a pretty cool class. He never really takes attendance but it is helpful to just go because a lot of the material he covers in class is out of the book and will save you on reading all of it. Quizzes were pretty easy too as long as you paid attention to his slides and whatnot. Pretty good class and teacher for a Gen Ed.
Professor Rhoades made it difficult to pay attention to the class. Even when you were paying attention, you have to wade through all of the rambling to figure out what he is saying and, more importantly, why it is relevant. He's a great guy, really understanding and he loves the subject, but his talking is out of control. Never kept class on time.
Was better than I was expecting. Hippie liberal professor, but allows discussion of differing viewpoints. Assignments were clear and relevant. My only major complain was all the anti-American propaganda BS he kept making us read. The textbook was full of factual errors, too. Summer class, got out early almost every day.
Very good prof, but going to class is almost pointless. you can learn everything you'll need besides the few slides he shows on his own work. He is also a bit unclear on what he wants at times.
Outstanding Instructor
Great instructor, Great class.
He is super helpful and explains everything well and very interesting.
LOVE this prof! He's so cool, down to earth, easy to talk to/approach...very fair grader, lots of experience in the field, funny and helpful. My fave anthro prof ever :)
Really nice guy and means well. he was unclear what was due when and due dates were always changing. going to class wasnt much help at all either.
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Rhodes!! He is laid back, interesting, fun. Fairly easy grader as long as you put in the effort. I take him whenever I have the option!
Rhoads is a super nice guy, but also super unorganized. I did not find it difficult to do well in his class, but I found it annoying how often assignments were added to the syllabus, or that the syllabus was incorrect, or that he elaborated on assignments adding more to them after the fact. Going to class was worthless, I didn't learn anything.
Really great professor. Super laid back, easy grader, assignments were never too hard. I actually became more interested over time. Thanks to him i'm taking another anthro course.
Super easy class. All of the exams are online. The semester project is also super easy. Overall he is an interesting guy with a lot of experience.
Fairly easy class, but pointless to attend. Very nice guy and easy grader, but not many points for the whole class so if you miss an assignment your grade will go down a lot. Didn't learn much from the class at all.
Constantly had to text kids in the class to try and figure out whether or not a particular assignment would be graded for points. He's also incredibly anal with his grading.. got a 3 out of 5 on an extra credit submission. Also likes to keep you until the very last minute or sometimes past the class time. Don't believe me? Find out for yourself.
Prof Rhoads is very nice but he does have a tendency to ramble on during his lectures. Because of this his teaching method is not great. There's a large semester project that is worth almost 50% of your grade but if you get it done early it's not that bad. The final is only two essays. The exams are pretty easy, as long as you study you'll be fine.
Russel Rhoads was the very first professor I ever had at GVSU. He's extremely passionate about what he does and he comes across as more an anthropologist than a professor. He gives presentations about where he has been and the studies he has conducted. Pretty easy final project. Expect to read. Good class.
Prof Rhoads straight up saved my butt at the end of the semester. He is super helpful and understanding, and an overall very interesting guy. He has a lot of experience and a lot of cool stories to tell.
Professor Rhoads is a little crazy and has a hard time staying focused on one thing. Be sure to start the semester project early and make sure you get a good group because this is a huge part of your grade. He also has a few in-class assignments.
He makes the class interesting and gives two online tests and one group project. The project can be time consuming, but he isn't a tough grader, so it's not hard to do well. If you attend events, you can get extra credit. There are very few outside of class assignments. He can be disorganized and hard to follow, but ask questions, he'll help!
Professor Rhoads is a great professor to take for this class! All his exams are online and he gives you study guides for each of them. One group project that you are able to gradually work on over the course of the semester. If you do the homework, turn things in on time, and put in effort, you'll get an A.
To be completely honest I'm a nursing student and was busy enough as it is and Professor Rhoads required a lot of work outside of the class (a massive group project that required you to go to events, a ridiculous amount of reading, etc.) His lectures didn't cover anything on the exams, he required lots of group work which I really didn't like.
Russ knew what he was talking about and shared his experiences with you. He made things clear and there wasn't a lot of homework. Very understanding and helpful. Take him!
There are a lot of homework and reading assignments. They are easy and short and most of the time interesting. 40% of your points are the final project. Super caring professor and understanding of college students.
There are a bunch of reading and discussion board assignments but no exams. Most of your grade comes from a group project at the end but it's very easy and straightforward. He's a fun professor and a very chill guy.
I would take this class again but only because it fulfills two gen ed requirements. He is a nice guy but expectations were often unclear and he was extremely unorganized. My blackboard was always overflowing with irrelevant material that we never got to in class . Long lectures and he often runs out of time. Lots of group work but its an easy A.
Rhoads was an amazing professor that helped me easily get a Gen Ed course out of the way. There was no test involved just a final group project. He grades very fairly and you really just need to show up and listen to pass. Wish I could take his class again. Amazing.
Great Professor! Anyone taking ANT 204 this is the professor you want! He is really nice and keeps the lectures interesting. He is a fair grader so you do not have to worry about your GPA in this course. I learned a lot from him and it was just a fun course overall. Online midterm that you do at home and take-home final exam essays.
Rhoads is a really nice guy. His lectures can be very boring at times, but the material in the course was interesting. We had two exams, the midterm and final, and both were online. Most of the grade is dependent on the final project, but he gives you all semester to work on it.
I really enjoyed Prof. Rhoads's lectures when I went in. This was one of two courses I had this semester where I felt comfortable skipping, and I would only miss his personal stories from his fieldwork. He puts most of his lecture into powerpoints, and gives almost every handout in class. He's also a really nice guy, generally speaking.
Professor Rhoads is probably one of the nicest professors that I have had at GVSU. His lectures do tend to get a little boring if you are not interested in what he has to say, however he will keep a smile on his face And continue. He genuinely cares about the students and is extremely understanding. His project instructions are sometimes vague.
Great professor. I had this class as a hybrid and every week when assignments were due, he went above and beyond in giving explanations to why you got the grade you did. He has a real love for anthropology and it shows! 2 projects, one that was a group. Did not take too much time out of my scheudle
He is very nice. The class itself was very boring, and his teaching was very disorganized. If you want to actually learn about anthropology, dont take him. If you want an easy A, take him.
He's an okay dude, I'm taking his 6-9 Cultural Anthropology class and it's hell on earth. He is very passionate about what he teaches and it is kind of extreme, he's picky on what he wants in his assignments. He overly explains EVERYTHING. This class is interesting but not on a Monday night.
He is so caring and kind, but having him on a Monday 6-9 was not the best choice! He has a very monotone voice which makes this class hard to listen to because it is late at night. I wish this class was not a 6-9 because it would be so much more engaging. Your expectations are clear, his lectures are just confusing at times. It is an easy A!!
Dr. Rhoads is a very nice guy. He is so sweet and caring. His lecture style is participation based, it's best to take him at a time of day people are willing to talk (Not a Monday 6-9). Lectures at night are boring because no one is willing to participate, making the class not as interesting as it should be. I enjoyed taking him.
Is very unorganized and is hard to find assignments dude because he has so much stuff on his blackboard. Tough grader WOULD NOT TAKE
Honestly this class was a super easy A, but there was really no point of going unless we were doing an activity in class, which he tells you beforehand. Most of the class was just him ranting about random stuff, sweet guy, but really unnecessary. Exams were online, so easy. Big grade is group project at end that isn't really explained well.
Really cares about students, super nice. I got to learn about interesting topics outside of my major. Amazing choice for an issues course. Super easy and Russel is the sweetest person ever.
He is my favorite professor at GVSU! He is nice and understanding. Homework is pretty light, and he is a fair grader. His classes are really interesting and you will learn a lot.
