Nice Guy...rambles...laughs at own jokes...noone else does
Does Kick Ass experiments, in a sexy sort of way
Good teacher, but hard course.
the ole RC is a good man thats for sure
Oh RC, what a character....way to write EVERYTHING on the board
writes down lots of equation derivation, hard to tell what is actually useful
No Comments
I love RC!
cheerful guy, very helpful, exams are a cakewalk, if you go to class once a week you'll ace it
RC for President, Bush is a tool!
Doesn't really expect anything of you except to show up for lab. A trained seal could pass the exams.
Very nice guy! Lectures are clear, but "skippable"; all you need for quizzes and labs is what you can learn in 5 minutes from the manual. Tests are extremely easy, but the course is a pleasant overview of fundamental physical concepts.
Couldn't be less interesting if he tried. He writes the lab manual, and puts everything he knows (on the subject) in it. Everything. Asking him questions isn't much help; all he can do is restate the lab manual. It's all he knows.
Very easy course and easy prof. Easy to get along with and understand. Highly recommended.
Fun and quirky... pretty easy
I really like him, he's a pretty great guy! Experiments are hilarious! He goes all out. I would highly recommend him to anyone taking physics. Relatively easy, but you still learn a lot. Certaintly a really knowledgeable man about the subject, but still realizes that everyone is not majoring in this
Super cool, fun class, highly recommend :)
He's a really great teacher! I would very highly recommend taking his class. He's so nice and really approachable -- always willing to help. I love his demos -- he really does go all out! One of my favorite classes at Pitt.
This prof has some pretty cool physics demonstrations he plays with all kinds of toys. He explains everything in mathamatical terms, this can be good or bad. To pass Read the book do the Hw. Class on ocasion, recitation is a waste of time. Even I who belongs no where near physics got a C
I really liked Dr. Clark, but the course was a ton of work---too much in my opinion. He makes it not so bad since he is so fair and outgoingly helpful.
Great professor! Very nice and fair guy, class was a lot of work, but more enjoyable one of the science labs. Too bad he doesn't teach Physics!
highly recommended!! extremely nice guy and wants all his students to do well. he is always available for help, and very considerate regarding different issues if you ask. beware: class involves A LOT of homework.. actually TOO much in my opinion for a intro non-major course.
I liked Dr. Clark, although I fell asleep in almost every lecture. the only reason I went was for the clicker questions which were 5% of the grade. Lots of work required, and I would also say lots of studying. I got an A by doing all the hw and practicing problems. The final was a little tricky.
A lot of work, but if you apply yourself will get you far in this class. Clark gives you many oppritunities to prove yourself, fair tests, somewhat fair quizzes, HW is ridic tho.
Completely useless in lecture; you will learn more from the book. Don't bother going to his office hours, he is very dismissive. Said he would curve to a B- in the class but did not even come close to doing that at all. Has zero interest in teaching freshman, you can tell he really did not want to teach the class.
Completely terrible, never in his office during office hours, wouldn't help if you asked
HORRIBLE. Always wants you to struggle on homework, and never wants to help you through a problem. Computer recitations were long and useless. LON-CAPA homework became a major chore. I don't think he curved the class at all. I would never recommend him. Like the other comment said, he is very dismissive in office hours; it's so true.
Lecture is a waste of time. Totally unhelpfull, quote of his "you can't expect to come to lecture and understand the material" WHAT!!! The guy admits he's useless. Only way you'll get by is by teaching yourself or by studying in groups. Also, he tells you he will curve, but in reality obviously does not. Don't take this proffessor!
Clark was one of my least favorite teachers, even though I liked the material. The only time I bothered to visit his office hours he seemed more annoyed than willing to help, and his lectures fail to make the material clear. Luckily I had a good TA.
I was very worried about the ratings that were posted; however, I thought he was very good and lectures were very clear but boring. Reading the book helped a lot. The homework problems were hard and time consuming but if you know how to do them you are set for all of the exams.
I've had Dr. Clark for both PHYS0175 and 0219. He is a great professor. Anybody on here that is complaining about the class being too hard is just not prepared for the material he presents. Yes, LON-CAPA was annoying and he did say you can't expect to understand the lecture, but I did. Great powerpoints. If you can, take physics with Dr. Clark
good guy, really difficult homework but if you struggle through it the tests are a breeze. Resist any temptation to cheat on the homework, it will be worth it come test time.
Tests aren't that bad but do NOT take his class if you can't teach yourself from the book. Lecture was always at least a week behind the homework because he wastes so much time in lecture. I go to every lecture and still have no clue what's going on in homework.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Basically in lecture goes over a homework problem for 10-15 minutes, then uses the rest of lecture to teach you basically nothing. The homework problems are nothing like examples in the notes because for whatever reason he puts the most basic examples in notes. Do not ever take his class.
Not good
The guy may be nice but he is useless.. you must be able to teach yourself. He obviously does NOT want to teach
Solid, but usually only skims the surface of material so you NEED to be able to learn from the book. Homework is HARD, but it does make the tests seem easy. Tests are very fair. Uses a clicker, which is 5% of grade. Take Clark if you can learn from the book, as an A is possible. If you need an in-depth teacher, you may want to look elsewhere.
Worst Professor Ever. Trust me. He is lazy, and a terrible teacher. His TAs grade his homeworks and quizzes, his exams are written and graded by a computer program. He teaches with calculus in an algebra based class. Terrible man, terrible teacher, terrible class. Don't take him. Just don't.
Good teacher, but spends too much time going over homework problems at the beginning of class. To people that say he is lazy - how else should a professor grade ~250 people's homework, quizzes, and tests? Lots of opportunities for extra credit, tests aren't horrible. Rarely refers to calculus to explain things. Not a problem.
Almost worthless professor...you have to learn a lot from the book. HW takes time and you have 3 a week but you get unlimited tries with lon-capa. 20 problems on a test in 50 minutes. The final is 2x as long and people often don't finish in time and have to guess on problems on both exams and the final. Weekly quizzes.
I've had clark for physics lecture and lab. I definitely recommend taking him for lab. He explains the labs clearly, his quizzes are easy, and he teaches it well. As far as lecture goes, though, his homeworks are much too hard and long, his tests take a half an hour longer than he gives you, and he is the most worthless professor in existence.
His tests were fair, but the homework was frustrating at times. They were Lon Capa online hw's. His lectures consisted of powerpoint slides and doing example problems out of the book.
Great prof. Definitely have to study and read the book, he doesn't just hand you the material, but he has the best formula sheets in the dept. and is VERY willing to help students with homework and other material. Homework is hard, but really helps you thoroughly understand the material. Great demonstrations and like another user said, kinda sexy.
His classes are challenging and he by no means lets students be lazy by assigning easy problems, but he is great at assisting with homework and other course material. Homework problems are difficult and require a good understanding of concepts, but are helpful in the end. Definitely the best physics professor at the Univ.
Very Nice guy, I personally cant speak about his office hours or helpfulness outside of class because I never went. However, IF you do his online hw online on your own then you will be able to understand the concepts in class
Dr. Clark is a fabulous instructor. Sometimes seems a little indifferent but he's really out to help you. Homework is tough but it WILL teach you the material. Don't cheat yourself by cheating. If you need help he's always happy to even outside office hours but don't expect him to hand you answers. He likes when students show a little enthusiasm.
Clark is probably one of the better physics teachers. He explains things much better then my teacher for 0174(devaty). None of the physics teachers are easy so no matter what tests will be hard. At least with Clark you get a personable guy who explains things. I would take him over other teachers in the department for sure.
His lectures were organized. Dealing w/ him or LON-CAPA was at times a nightmare. He had little tolerance to answer questions. He'd repeatedly check emails during my appointments. After enough students inquire about a value LON-CAPA wouldn't except, a tolerance would magically be change on the system. Crap part he's only instructor for thisclass
His lectures are interesting and he's a good teacher if you know the material, but as other people said he is very intolerant of students' questions. The tests are very hard, all of the practice tests on-line, lon-capa problems, and book problems don't prepare you well for the test. I used the book a lot to study, but most people didn't use it much
Lectures were unbearable. I learned basically everything from my TA or other students. 50% of grade comes from the tests and 50% from homeworks and other junk. Be aware that the curve at the end of the semester may not actually help you, he doens't make this clear at the beginning. Definitely wouldn't reccommend.
His lectures were awful. He reads right from the powerpoint slides, and just expects you to understand physics the way he does. He does not make an effort to explain any concepts what so ever. His tests are nothing like what is done in class and his curve actually brought me down. I definitely do not recommend him.
Very straightforward, clear teaching that conveyed the material from the perspective from which you need to understand it. Slick.
Physics 0212 lab is easy compared to organic chem and biology labs--especially in the summer. Dr. Clark is effective in teaching the weekly lecture, however, and you may learn some useful information for tests like the MCAT
Explains the concepts of physics and the pertaining labs very concisely; enough said.
Probably the most average instructors I have encountered. This course covers physics that you should have already seen, so there's not much to learn. He doesn't really make it interesting or dull. Sometimes he tries to be funny and it's really uncomfortable. Best part of this class was definitely staring at the bizarre characters in lecture.
Dr. Clark is a truly interesting man. He's a fun guy and is very clear in lecture. He is very helpful one on one, and he truly cares about his students.
He is a decent professor.. Our exam was on chapters 1-6 but by the time we took the exam, we had covered 9 chapters of information. I went to his office for an appointment and he was constantly checking his emails and messing with his computer. It was upsetting to see how little he cared that I was there.
confusing, horrible examples, exams are much harder than anything presented in lecture or homework, thinks we understand physics the way he does. Not good. Avoid if you can!
Does not care about students at all. Seems like he is forced to teach this class. Avoid if possible
Clark keeps the class entertaining at times, but it seems our class covered more materials than the other Physics 1 classes...none of the others got to fluids or much of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, so I feel like our class got a bigger workload. Exams are hard, he kinda prepares you for them if you study a lot. Not a bad guy.
Lectures weren't the most helpful and neither were in class example problems. Homework was extremely difficult, but final grades are fair.
Clark was a good professor compared to other physics ones. He made the class enjoyable at times with his demonstrations. His exams are very hard with the averages in the 50s, but he curves the grade at the end. He allowed our class to bring the textbook to the exams which was very helpful. Physics is rough, but I'd take Clark again if I had to.
He's a pretty average instructor. He gave a lot of homework which seemed like a pain but really boosted my grade in the end. I found his lectures to be extremely confusing, especially when he showed how to integrade certain functions (that weren't even on tests). His tests were extremely difficult but he curved the class average.
This class had SO MUCH busy work. 5 hours in class, 3 hours of homework, and 1 hour of quizzes per week. If you prefer a challenge to busy work, don't take this class. I scored 10 points above the class average, but somehow still ended my first C+ ever (I'm a junior). Did so much work to learn NOTHING.
Clark didn't teach an easy class by any means, but he compensated by having excellent office hours. I took advantage of them, and it helped greatly. I felt comfortable interfacing with him and even cracking the odd joke here or there. I felt like I was actually dealing with a human being. Great instructor, great guy. Would recommend, just WORK!!!
Clark teaches this class very well in my opinion. You will have two 10-free response question exams and a 50 multiple choice question final. Instead of curves, he uses extra credit o you have to work for your points back, which is actually not as bad as you would think. He is fairly approachable and seems to care. He did as good a job as anyone
He has office hours every day of the week, so he's quite accessible. Exams are very difficult. I did barely above average on the first and aced the second and the final, and ended up with a solid A in the class. The lecture clicker questions and the homework really saves your grade: do them. Difficult class, but the professor knows what he's doing.
TERRIBLE, TERRIBLE PROFESSOR. Worst, I've ever had in my four years at Pitt. Absolutely oblivious and could care less about his students' success. Homework assignments are much too challenging. Lectures are basically pointless, you have to be able to learn directly from the book. Tests are way too long; 25 questions in 50 minutes? Yeah, right.
Exams were way too long... Most people had to guess on at least 3 problems on the 25 question exams, so averages were low. You could read the book and teach yourself better. What a waste.
Don't take. Seriously don't. There's no way you can finish his exams in the time period given. He blows through topics so fast and doesn't care if the students understand it or not. He scales his class really hard (have to get a 74 or above to just get a c. Really?) no extra credit. Homework helps but not very much and is so hard. Do not take!
He teaches the material a lot more complex than it should be. Homework is pretty difficult, but if you complete it all, it will be a grade booster. Very little extra credit, no curves. Exam problems are fair, but tests are super long and hard to complete within allotted time. If you are able to teach yourself, his course may be an option.
This class was much harder than it should have been. He did not teach the topics well and then the homework was much more complex than lectures. He did not care about the class or the students. 25 questions in 50 minutes? Barely anyone finished and that hurt the class average.
In what seems to have been Clark's first attempt at the algebra-based class, it didn't go well. In-class examples were either way too easy or way too difficult. Tests were extremely rushed. Our first test covered chapters 1 and 2. The final covered 6 additional chapters BEYOND what was on the last midterm. I mean, come on.
I do not understand all of the poor comments for Dr. Clark, he has been one of my favorite professors at Pitt. I do not like physics at all, but he made it enjoyable and very clear. He takes good time to provide examples of the material and is always available for help. I would highly recommend!
Physics is a hard class, regardless of your professor. Dr. Clark used examples to explain all of the concepts. The homework was tough, but it prepared you for the exams. If you went to his office hours, he was helpful. The exams were hard(25 questions in 50 minutes), but if you actually study, you will be fine! And the final is super doable.
Dr. Clark is funny whe n giving lecture s, but his lectures were notvery helpful and clear. Also his exams were so hard that the average was around 50s !! Not recommended.
This class was supposed to be an easy A. The formal lab report was the death of nearly everyone's grade though. It was not graded well and this class is honestly just a waste of time. Dr. Clark was bearable as an instructor for the course though. Gives you all the notes and the lab manual. Lon Capa is still the worst.
i don't really enjoy his personality he's a little rude and demeaning in my opinion but he's very smart. the tests are too hard compared to the homework. at least he posts all of his notes online as powerpoints
Dr. Clark is the cliche strict college professor. Mind numbing exams, no review sessions, zero extra credit, and loads of difficult homework. He is also extremely impersonal during office hours, and I felt like I was a bother to him for just being there. Physics is rough no matter what but he doesn't make it any more bearable.
Dr. Clarke makes physics even more harder than it already is. His lectures are hard to follow and he doesn't explain concepts well. The tests are hard but you can use your book. The worst part though is that he is pretty secretive about how he grades, saying that he will curve the class, but he keeps your current grade a mystery. Very Frustrating
Lectures are often convoluted and the examples he uses are not always very good. Most of your learning's gonna be from outside lecture. Nice guy very enthusiastic about the subject and I found him to be available outside of class. Don't fall behind on the homework it catches up to you quick.
Its physics, its going to be hard. Clark tries his best to make physics fun, but two homework assignments every week make it difficult when paired up with other classes. Its hard, but just get through it.
Like someone else said, he teaches the lab as well as anyone else would. The labs are really trivial and if you don't get an A you probably just didn't try. Attendance is mandatory to lectures but it's 40 minutes once a week so just go. If you're a Physics major I'd suggest just taking 0520 with another prof. If you're not, don't worry he's fine.
NO extra credit. NO curve. NO review session. 2 homework every week. make physics harder to understand. lecture is not clear
Two assignments per week are fine because there are only five or six problems each assignment. However, the lectures are boring, and his explanation of concepts is dry. He says that he is going to curve the class based on the percentage; however, he kept his curving method a secret, so none of us really know what grades we are getting.
Lectures have very little to do with what's on the exam and are only worth going to just for the lecture questions. Curves way too unfairly. Definitely would not recommend.
Exams are extremely difficult. He takes the most difficult questions from the test banks for his exams. Grades extremely unfairly. He says don't panic when exam averages are near 60%, but you should. He hardly curves. Sets the class average in the end to a C- (failing grade). Lectures are convoluted and unnecessarily difficult to follow.
If you can figure out which formula from the sheet to use and know how to plug numbers into an equation on your calculator, his exams definitely aren't hard and he doesn't trip you up with the options. If you keep up with the homework and practice with the given formulas, it's not that bad. His lectures are super dry and boring but it's physics...
I know lots of people that were in my class last semester that did not like the way that Dr. Clark taught. He teaches off of powerpoints and then does example problems that can sometimes be a little tedious. His lectures may not have been that interesting, but that were effective. Paying attention in class should give you a good understanding.
Only has 2 exams and a non-cumulative final. 3 homework assignments due each week but the TAs go over them in recitation and they're worth as much as an exam. clicker questions in lecture and quizzes each week in recitation. I learned more from the TA but Clark goes over examples in class and really is a pretty good option for an already hard class
He is funny and keeps his lectures interesting. However, there is a disconnect with the lecture and the homework material, because I had to spend almost every day in the resource room getting help. I STILL didn't do well on the tests. Tests are ALL multiple choice, which stinks, because there is no partial credit. Homework really helps your grade.
Despite what other student's say, Dr. Clark's class is fine. Lectures are kind of dry but it's not unbearable (physics at 8am, what else would you expect) Weekly homeworks are not too hard and online feedback helps for actually learning the problems. Exams are fair and there is decent extra credit opportunity for each of the midterms. Nice guy.
Probably the worst physics teacher for engineering physics, I really wish I took either Nero or the night class. Lectures are very boring and he tells terrible jokes that no one laughs at, especially at 8 AM. Exams are difficult and you have to self-study a lot because he will spend an entire class (with most confused) on 3 problems. Take calc 3.
His examples are often tedious but are representative of the exams, which are just as hard as any E&M section. People complain that they're too hard, but his examples prepare you well. That being said, he was impersonal and slightly rude in office hours, but I only cared about his teaching ability.
He teaches the lab lecture and this was an absolute nightmare to attend since it was an hour of him making jokes and making the stage his catwalk. This is solely for attendance but the actual lab was great. Those pre-lab quizzes were also a pain so yeah
Contrary to popular belief, you need to put in 2 credits worth of work to do well. I took notes on each lab before the quizzes and was more than fine. The lectures are kind of dry, but that's just the nature of the material; Dr. Russ does his best to make them interesting. Was a fun class! Get yourself a good lab partner and you'll THRIVE
Do your lab report in the substantial amount of time given to you after you finish the lab procedure, so you dont have to waste time doing it later. Always ask the TAs for help if youre stuck, thats why theyre there. Put in a decent effort and theres no reason why you shouldnt get an A.
Russell is the guy who teaches the lecture component of the physics lab. The lecture component is stupid and shouldn't be separate from the lab. He lectures about stuff that isnt really relative to the lab. Going to the lectures is like 5% of your grade. I skipped it because it was Monday at 9AM and I was fine.
This class is super easy. The lectures don't add much but Russell is pretty cool
Professor Clark is very approachable if you have any questions. During covid, the labs had to be done individually outside of class, and would take about 2-3hours to do each of them. Therefore the class is just a lot of work outside of class. Professor Clark himself is amazing and a great professor to have for physics labs. His TAs are amazing too!
Professor Clark is one of the most caring & understanding professors I've ever had. He really encouraged mastery of the material, and was flexible with deadlines as long as the assignments were completed properly and independently. I wouldn't have earned the grade I did without his support! His lectures were specifically helpful for magnet stuff.
Russell is nice. Lab TA's are meh. Labs are 3 hours long and the instructions can be vague a lot of the time. It's important to read the manual before going to the lab and attend the lecture. Homework and pre-lab homework due each lab. Lab report due every Friday. Can drop 1 lab, 1 HW, and 1 pre-lab from final score. An A is very manageable.
Professor Clark was great. The lectures didn't really add much and he tended to over-explain the material, but he grades very fairly. The lab was pretty easy and he was always accessible to answer questions.
Super frustrating. I spent so much time studying for exams + people who barely studied did better than me because they got lucky with MC. Requires attendance with TopHat (waste of time bc ALL of my learning was done outside of class) Homework is based on correctness so how can we practice material when we are penalized for trying?!
Took him for physics lab, and it was an overall easy class. Lectures were fine and tophat questions weren't too bad, but important to attend lectures. As long as you had a good group in labs, it wasn't too bad and grades weren't too much of an issue. Clear feedback and you were able to get out of labs early most of the time.
Clarke provides informative lectures to prepare you for the lab. In-lecture Clarke is very cheery and open to questions, but he has a somewhat arrogant attitude outside of that - his first instinct is to blame you when something isn't working. The dichotomy is jarring, but the course is plenty manageable without his direct help.
Clark is only responsible for the lecture portion of Physics lab. He goes over what will happen in lab and asks tophat questions during his lecture. Fairly easy questions, you get half the credit just for participating. Physics lab overall isn't bad. Labs are pretty straightforward. Only spent about an hour a week on postlabs and homework.
This guy is a joke. Tries to be funny and just isn't. Most inconsiderate professor ever - our TA didn't show up for lab and he somehow made it our fault (telling us it had to be our dropped lab)???? Doesn't care at all when you email him and is super arrogant. Sucks that he's our only option, but at least his lectures are stupid easy and useless.
made us buy a textbook that was only used for homework & the labs in it didnt match the course labs. also none of the lab equipment worked well. his lectures were dull but good for doing other homework. tophat was 90% participation, 10% correctness which was cool though
He was okay, he does the lecture portion of the lab which consists of a review of the material (which honestly doesn't help with the lab) but you have graded TopHats (you get 90% for participation). The TopHats are very hard honestly... For physics lab, he is fine, I don't know about other physics classes...
the epitome of "fine" professor; nothing super standout. he coordinates labs and does the lecture portion, which were painful to sit through but mandatory because of tophat. labs are fine but some of the manuals are poorly worded which makes it confusing, but most are easy and we got out early.
Lectures are simple, but attending is important. Labs are lengthy, so read the manual beforehand. unstuck study helped me ace the TopHat quizzes. Overall an easy A if you put in the work.
I really like Russell. He is super nice and does not make physics lab painful like it could be. It is so much better than the bio and chem labs. If you put in the time to do the homework and pre lab and make a decent effort on the reports you will get an A.
Russell was great for Physics Lab. This lab was definitely on the easier side compared to chemistry labs. The TAs are very easy graders and as long as you put in some effort you are basically guaranteed an A.
Physics lab is definitely easier than general chemistry and ochem labs. Labs almost always finished early with the lab report already submitted. You do get random people in your groups each week which can be good or bad.
Decent lecturer, very flexible with lab. Grades fairly.
The lab equipment oftentimes malfunctions and prof Clark is not helpful or caring if your lab gets messed up or takes too long because of it, so beware. The lectures are really boring, but there's top hat questions that count as attendance basically. Weekly homeworks, pre-labs, and lab reports just like any other lab that don't take very long.
You're required to attend the lecture portion of class - ensured by tophat responses. These lectures are often extremely boring. The actual lab was often poorly organized, and the grad TA's were frequently unhelpful and lost aswell. Groups rotate every week. That said, if you put in any amount of effort, you'll get a good grade.
