He is very smart but a terrible teacher. Instead of teaching he makes fun of you for not knowing the answers. He expects you to have the chapters memorized each day. I don't think he understands that we haven't been studying this for more than 10 years, like him.
Dr. Grubbs is great. O Chem is a hard class, and it takes a lot of time to understand it. But Grubbs is more than willing to help out. He is very un-approachable, but thats just his personatity, He's not the bubbly type. Put in your effort, and He'll help you out
Dr. Grubbs is awesome. If your taking O-chem, its probably in preparation for a graduate school exam, and Grubb's will give you the best chance at grad exam success. Survive his class, and you'll be better for it.
Dr. Grubbs hosts some of the highest quality classes at GCU. Want to get into Med School/Grad school/pass the MCAT? Take his classes, but expect a Grad level class. He doesn't hand out A's. If you want it you'll need to put in the time and seek help if need be. Those who complain about this class probably aren't cut out for further education. A+ !
Dr. Grubbs uses the opportunity of you being in his class to prepare you for your graduate exams. His class is extremely hard, and you will study intensively, but you'll be grateful later on. When I took the MCAT, the OCHEM portion was actually easier than most of Dr. Grubbs exams. If you put effort into succeeding, he'll put effort into you.
Not a class for the faint of heart. Memorize his schedule and eating habits and you may be able to corner him for questions. Very funny guy but some people don't get his sense of humor. He gives you everything you need to succeed. Whiners and lazy people won't make it. Good luck!
People don't put in half the work they should when it comes to school. If you want to pass this class, you'll study everyday. Gcu has a lot of easy classes that you take notHing from, this is not one of them. Thank you Dr. Grubbs for the knowledge and new studying ability.
The course is challenging, requires a lot of effort, good time management. He makes you do the HW problems but does not grade them. He gives you old quizzes and exams that help a lot. Do them before the review sessions. I got an A in OCHEM I so OCHEM II was not that bad. The course no longer has a curve and this makes it harder to get an A.
Good guy, good professor, good class. He tells you what you need to know at review sessions. Exam problems are same as the textbook problems so do the HW.
the class is awesome. I learned so much. thanks prof Grubbs for all the extra practice and review sessions
Great example of what a college professor should be.
He is one of the best professors at GCU.
Could NOT ask for a better orgo Professor. A+++
As others have said this class is very hard. If you work hard you should be OK.
Best instructor at GCU. Be confident around him and try to loosen him up and he'll like you. Not the most approachable guy, but that's just his personality! Go to his review sessions!
He is totally AMAZING! Best Prof ever! This class was literal epic. He's super helpful during office hours.
Well organized and very difficult. Dr. Grubbs puts a lot of effort into the class. He is more friendly if you are doing well in the class. He gets angry if you are struggling and do not try. Go to review sessions.
Very helpful teacher but also very demanding. Asks a lot out of the students. wants you to thoroughly understand the material. if you want to succeed in his class, go to EVERY review session he offers. If you take this class make it a high priority and have a limited schedule and social life. It is not as bad as everyone says it is.
Great professor! I had a love hate relationship with organic chemistry. Make sure that you don't overload your schedule while enrolled in this class! Go to lecture, go to his review sessions, turn everything in and STUDY! Grubbs is quite and will not approach you, you have to approach him, but he is very helpful and hilarious!
His class is challenging and will require a lot of studying. He gives you the tools to succeed. Go to every review session. If you have questions, he is very helpful to point you in the right direction. Great professor and prepares you for grad/med school. Once you understand his personality, he's actually funny and personable.
Dr. Grubbs is a brilliant professor! He teaches very quickly due to the programs time restraints so it is up to the student to ask questions and study A LOT on their own, but he is always there to answer questions and hold review sessions. He even shows his awesome dance moves on occasion!! Best professor at GCU! Be prepared to study a lot!
Dr Grubbs is the best professor I have ever had. He takes extra time out of his schedule to hold review sessions because ochem is a tough subject. If you go to class, do the hw, and read the chapters he will do everything he can to prepare you for the exams. He keeps the class interesting by showing rap videos and by telling hilarious jokes.
in order to get A in this class, me and my studying buddy had to study ochem at least 2 hours everyday. Don't be scared, just ask him questions. He is nicer than his serious look, haha
study and practice. study and practice. study and practice. during class he will not hold your hand because there are 40+ students. he is much better at review. exams are always changed and are tough.
Best dressed instructor A+. He is as sharp as his attire. He is very knowledgeable. This was a tough class that requires you to study, study, study as he advises in the beginning of the course. He is fair and expects one to do their work. He has dry humor and very funny at times. His test are very challenging. Once again, study study study.
Pay attention during lectures because hints are given out. Practice, practice, practice!
Dr. Grubbs is the best professor I've ever had and I'm sure he will be the best I will ever have in college! He's shockingly intelligent when it comes to any reaction, any chapter, at any time. He is the most dedicated professor to his students. It's very true that he's very tough, but he always tries to help his students out with reviews :))
Dr. Grubbs is a boss. He's ridiculously good as a professor - very helpful, very funny, very intelligent. Go to reviews and pay attention during class - you'll be fine. Tests are difficult, but he gives you everything you need to be successful in the class. A++
He is the only ochem professor.
He is a genius.
Dr. Grubbs is a great professor. He's very knowledgeable. He really wants you to understand. If you work hard, he will help you out. Dont think you will pass without busting your rear end. He doesnt have time for tthat. Excellent professor.
Great instructor. The class is difficult and requires a large amount of effort from the student. Dr. Grubbs is very intelligent and knows his materials. He also has great jokes.
He wants you yo memorize the book just becuase it is the same book that he used when he was an undergrad. He has used that book for more that 10 years and he expects you know it a 8 weeks.
Good Times.
Dr. Grubbs is the best! If you complain about him, it's only because you didn't pay attention in class and want to blame someone else.
Dr. Grubbs is a great professor, Organic Chemistry is a difficult class but Grubbs offers a ton of extra materials with practice problems to help you be successful, he isn't very approachable but he explains everything well and if you pay attention you should be prepared for the exams.
Go to class. Practice, practice, practice. Stay in school.
By far my favorite class of undergraduate, largely due to him. For most people this will be a difficult class, but if you ask questions Dr. Grubbs will go the extra mile to make sure you succeed. Dr. Grubbs is inspiring in such a way that I am considering pursing a PhD in Pharmacology, only then will I challenge him to a duel in the OCHEM dark arts
I have yet to meet a professor as great as Dr. Grubbs. As a gamma substituent of the nobel prize Dr. Grubbs he's great; and to this day I remember that terminal alkenes are not going to die! Dr. Grubbs is an enzyme, making it easier to learn chemistry. The only problem against him is that I can't give him an 11 out of 10. Oh, and good times.
When I was an undergrad, I was so scared of this course. I have heard horror stories of organic chemistry. He made it so simple to understand. Of course, you had to bust your butt to pass. In my opinion, he is one of the few reasons I got into medical school. Without him, I wouldn't have done so well. Thank you, Grubbsy! You're the best!
Grubbs is the best professor I have ever had. At the beginning you have no idea what to think about him, but slowly over time you begin to love his teaching. I have learned and retained so much because of him. If you read this Dr. Grubbs, Thank you.
Great
Great teacher. If you read the material and put all your effort into this class, you'll be fine. If you slack off in ANY way, you're screwed. Be prepared for grueling tests, long hours studying, lack of a social life, and the need for copious amounts of alcohol on the weekends. As scary as he may seem, Dr. Grubbs is a great guy.
Hes the best, once you take the class is good, but twice is better. I love this professor, hes really intelligent and has the answers to everything.
Grubbsy is the MAN!! He talks like Yoda, and seems mean, but just continue to ask him questions anyway. PQs are the worst, and tests are the bulk of your grade. Great class. Great teacher. Grubbsies tests are WAY harder than MCAT ochem, you'll be thankful in the end.
Go to lecture and all study sessions. The course is very difficult and is only manageable if you read the book. I am highly satisfied with this course because it prepared me for the Ochem section on my entrance exams VERY well. I barely had to study for that section. Do well in this class and the Ochem sections on the DAT PCAT MCAT will be easy.
Professor Grubbs makes this class interesting. The material is difficult but he explains it in a way that seems easier. You really need to work on material outside of class in order to fully understand the concepts.
I mean none of the classes he teaches are easy. Pay attention to small details verbally said, and extra notes that he writes over the PowerPoints. He can be intimidating but is clear and helpful when you ask, don't expect him to hold your hand through the course lol. He gives you everything you need to succeed but just READ the book(s)!
he is not a clear speaker and the tests do not correlate to his in class material.
Grubbs is not the most clear. He also seems very smug when it comes to students failing. Expect for him to slam your exams on your desk if you do not get a good grade.
He's a great teacher, really knows what he is talking about and makes class enjoyable. One of my favorite professors! He does make you work for it, if you're lazy you would do well. If you put in the time and pay attention you will be fine! The material is hard obviously, its Organic Chemistry, but its also doable because He's a great lecturer.
Dr. Grubbs is the best teacher at GCU! His ability to explain the complexities of Organic Chemistry in a way that makes sense is unparalleled. At first he will seem impersonal but push through the long nights of studying and prove that you too can succeed in OChem. By far one of my favorite teachers at GCU!
Lets just say this. When picking "up to three tags" I COULD NOT DECIDE. Prof Grubbs has been my favorite professor at GCU thus far and I am excited to take him again for Pharm. Hilarious instructor and very brilliant, however THIS COURSE IS NOT EASY. Be expecting to spend your semester in the library, but if you want to learn, Grubbs it the man.
Dr. Grubbs is the best professor I have had at GCU. At first he might come off as scary but just keep talking to him and you'll break his socially awkward wall down and he'll be less scary. Major advice for anyone about to embark on the ochem journey would be to READ THE BOOK as well as GO TO REVIEW SESSIONS. If you work hard, you will pass.
Great professor, extremely knowledgeable but its a tough subject. You have to do a lot by yourself, reading and practicing.
You'll find yourself highly respecting Dr. Grubbs by the end of Organic Chemistry II. Is his class hard? Of course it is! It's organic chemistry! Find a group of people you enjoy studying with and READ the book. Don't be afraid to go bug him and ask questions because he'll know the answer. Be curious and be prepared to ball when it's all over.
Has a very different but awesome sense of humor. Although his class is extremely tough and exams and quizzes are beyond hard, he really prepares you for the ACS exam that is taken. Grubbs is awesome and I'm so glad I had him as a professor. Just expect to cry a bunch of nights from the insane amount of work.
Rate my professor is a place to talk trash about professors, but to do so with Dr. Grubbs would be impossible. This man makes your time in the class difficult, but also useful. I have not had a professor that was so helpful to my journey to maturity. Thank you Dr. Grubbs.
He only takes participation one day a week. If you miss that day you get no points for the week. During OCHEM2, he teaches you about reactions but exams have material from from both OCHEM1 and OCHEM2.
The only reason I would take this guy again is because everyone else is objectively worse as far as teaching goes. I hate this man with a burning passion simply because he lives to ruin people's lives and enjoys giving 20-year-olds gray hair; however, he is undeniably the best ochem prof. on campus, so I'd advise you to bite the bullet.
If you want Organic Chemistry to be easy go take the course at a community college, not GCU. Be prepared for 80% of the test to be application of material for stuff you have not seen. He's your best option at GCU & if you have another teacher who teaches differently, you won't understand it at all.
Grubbs is an ok teacher. He is the best of the ochem lecture teachers but when you go into his offices hours he doesn't explain things very well. Organic chemistry is a very difficult class in general so it's not just his teaching.
I'm pretty sure OChem was conjured up by Satan himself, but, Dr. Grubbs is THE MAN. Those who complain about him simply don't put forth the effort that his class demands. It's totally doable provided that you pay attention, do ALL of the homework, read, and go to review sessions. You'll really be prepared for the ACS exam at the end too.
Most of the posts below this are trash..... Grubbs is one of the best and if you cant muster up the dedication to pass this class and study hard then you should not be going into the medical field. Im sure Med school will be a lot easier than Grubbs' class lol. Do the HW, reviews, and go to class and you will pass....
He's not going to tell you what he had for lunch, but he will tell you the twelve different ways to make the same carboxylic acid.
Grubbs was an extremely difficult professor to work with. He was extremely knowledgeable in in his field and he attempted to make class interesting with his jokes but overall he did not help his students. He taught mechanisms in class and then tested on concepts that he never covered in class, making his exams very difficult. HW is busy work.
I've had Grubbs for Organic Chemistry and Pharmacology. He makes courses hard but still grades with the average in mind. He increases rigor to levels that are not seen with most professors. Tests are not simply memorization, but require a true understanding of the material in order to do well. He challenges you to be better.
Dr. Grubbs is a very intelligent instructor. I really enjoy his lectures because not only is he extremely knowledgeable, but he is unlike any other professor I have had before. He is a genius plus he cracks the best jokes. Dr. Grubbs is a bit intimidating, however he is one of the best instructors I have ever had.
The professor gives students all the resources they need to succeed. Read the textbook and class handouts, as we were tested on both, however, many students did not read the textbook. Review handouts for tests, as many questions have a similar process. Also make sure that you go to the review sessions he holds. More enjoyable than general chem.
Grubbs can be hard to connect to at first. If you don't put effort into his material you'll be lost in the half of the class that drops out every semester. Prepare to read the textbook, go to every review session, do every paper he hands you, and the homework if you expect an A. He'll take you far if you allow it, the MCAT/PCAT will be a joke.
Professor Grubbs is one of the most knowledgeable/smartest professors I've ever had. Organic Chemistry is a difficult class. He is not there to be your friend or hold your hand. He is straight to the point. Once you get used to his teaching style, you learn to really appreciate the fact he actually cares about teaching you to think and work hard.
Dr. Grubbs does not communicate well and he is rude.
Ok, so I had Grubbs for organic chemistry and pharm. you either love him or hate him. He has a very unique way of teaching. thanks to Grubbs I was able to get good scores on DAT, and get into my top choice Dental School. Some people may think he is weird and mean, but he is a great guy once you get to know him. He trully cares about his studets.
I would recommend the class and the professor, it will be one of the most challenging class you will take in your program. People will tell you it's hard and that they know people who have failed it. It's hard, but its a step towards the career you want, don't let it be an obstacle. Attend every review, do every worksheet.
Dr. Grubbs is an excellent chemist, but not an excellent instructor. He uses example problems to teach major concepts, and from that he expects you to know the concept for exams. Makes exams extremely and unnecessarily hard. He is not very approachable and very smug. Does not help when you do not understand it. Do not take this class @ 7 AM.
Grubbs is the best professor GCU has, he cares about his students and provides more then enough materials for you to do well in this difficult course. Provides step-by-step instructions when showing new material. Also, it says a lot when a professor takes time out of his summer to have several review sessions a week through out this short course.
It blows my mind to see that so many people like Dr. Grubbs. He is honestly a horrible teacher -- he stares at the floor while pacing around the room, reciting pre-meditated lectures and pitiful jokes. There is no doubt that Dr. Grubbs has IQ of about 200, but he lacks social skills and every desirable quality one looks for in an educator.
Gubbs goes through many practice problems in class and effectively uses class time to get through the material we need to know. His review sessions and warm-up problems prepared us for hard exams. You have to actually learn. His knowledge and humor with the subject is amusing and elicits interest in the subject. I'm looking forward to CHM-232.
The comment below is on point! Anytime I refer to the book, it contradicts slides! Also, the materials mention drugs not on slides and barely touched on in the book! Its ridiculous that he doesnt view the chapter fully before creating his presentations. I find a contradiction for every drug! To make it worse, tests are like 85% of the grade.
Dr. Grubbs provides a strict learning environment where expectations are understood for all assignments. He is very knowledgeable in all of the subjects he teaches and keeps his class fun and interesting. The videos he presents are relevant and entertaining and his sense of humor keeps students engaged and on their toes. Tests are unique.
Dr. Grubbs is a living legend. His classes are difficult, so expect to work hard and spend countless hours studying in your own time. Don't miss classes, because there's a good chance you'll miss important information; he knows this stuff inside-out and back-to-front. I hated the homework because there's so much of it, although it's worth doing.
Grubbs is supposed to be the best OCHEM prof. at GCU but I greatly disagree. He lectures very fast, if you dont know the information you are screwed. He is not personable and does not explain the concepts very well. There is a ton of homework and the tests look nothing like the homework problems. Be prepared to look up hard test questions online.
Dr. Grubbs tells students how to be successful on the first day. You have to solve problems. He gives you lots of opportunities to solve problems (warm-ups, review sessions, study guides, hw) that are on his tests. Be ready for lecture or you will think he goes too fast. Don't be a snowflake. Interact with him and he is funny.
Dr. Grubbs is the Organic Chemistry GOAT.
Grubbs is the best chemistry professor at GCU. He is also hilarious!
I have had two classes and will have two more with Dr. Grubbs. Hes one of the best. Ochem is just a tough subject for most.
Dr. Grubbs has to be one of the best professors Ive had. O-Chem is a hard class and he doesnt hold your hand through it; he expects you to put in effort, but he gives you every tool to succeed. Hes downright hilarious and although this was the hardest class Ive ever taken, I genuinely enjoyed going to class every day. Seriously. Take Grubbs.
Dr. Grubbs's teaching skills and materials for this course were really helpful and is related to my field of study. His knowledge on the topics in both organic chemistry and pharmacology are astounding. He is very well organized, informative and answers any questions students may have. He is straightforward. Great dry humor.
Dr. Grubbs knows how to teach organic chemistry so that any level of student can understand. He explains exactly what is needed to be successful in the course. It is a hard subject and his tricks and methods will help you make it to the end. He will answer questions any time they are presented to him. Go to office hours and don't be scared.
I have been in Dr. Grubbs' classes for 4 semesters and I really enjoyed very class and day that I spent learning in his classes. I was never bored and was always engaged by his way of teaching. He will always push you to be your best. He provides you with the necessary information to make it to the next level (graduate school).
Take Grubbs if you're taking Organic Chem or Pharm because he makes the exams regardless of what professors you have. He also prepares you well for the MCAT. Good Luck!!
Love him, he's great, very awkward BUT a great instructor overall and the reviews are appreciated greatly.
i honestly feel like he is going on this site or paying someone to write these "great" comments about him. he is the worse professor and wants the students to fail. take his class and you'll see how "great" he is. enjoy
Grubbs is one of the worst teachers I have ever had. He is very unpersonable and doesn't help explain concepts. Going into his office doesn't help either because he won't answer your questions and stares at you like you are stupid. I took him for 3 different classes and he never got better. Highly recommend taking Ochem or Pharmacology not at GCU.
He enjoys watching students struggle to their breaking points. Mocks students who are struggling in his class by making comment about them on his Facebook. Talks down on students majors, for example he suggested students switch to Pre-PA from Pre-Med due to the struggle in his class. He is no help in office hours and just gets mad at you for it.
Grubbs is an amazing professor. I had him for O Chem I, O Chem II and Pharm. I could not imagine having another professor. If people are mad because the class was too hard, that's because the classes are meant to be challenging and not an easy A. Grubbs is very passionate, has great jokes, and is the best professor for these hard classes.
Grubbs is an amazing professor for ochem and pharm. His classes are incredibly difficult, and you have to work insanely hard for the grade, BUT it is so worth it. I have learned so much from having Grubbs for both ochem and pharmacology, and I am so happy that decided to take on the challenge of his classes.
Dr. Grubbs is extremely smart and challenges you to be better. He isn't going to hold your hand but he will give you everything you need to succeed. I have passed all his classes, not with A's but I feel like I probably learned more in his classes than the ones I got A's in.
What people don't understand about Dr. Grubbs is that he is preparing you for your future. His courses are very difficult, but so are courses in graduate school. He doesn't baby you, but neither do professors in graduate school. I was lucky enough to have him for ochem and pharm. I learned so much him, but you MUST put forth the effort.
Ochem is a hard class and a professor can't change that but Grubbs makes it doable and keeps you engaged in lectures and throws in jokes all the time. He is very good at teaching all the information you need to know, but you do have to put in a lot of time to practice and prepare if you want to do good. Go to all the review sessions!!
A master of OCHEM, but he appears uninterested in the success of the class as a whole. He favors the ones that excel and is cold to those who struggle. Doesn't mind having low class averages on exams & even brags about it. Teaches direct info, but exams are way more in depth. Need EXCESS study time. C+ course average. Can't deny good dry humor.
Grubbs is an excellent professor. He explains the reasoning behind all concepts. He is an expert and a talented jokester. My undergrad experience would not have been the same without Dr. Grubbs. He teaches you to develop critical thinking skills that can be applied to any other class. He gives real world examples and is willing to answer questions
He posts everything you need. Practice questions were the same as exam questions. Class average was a C. Don't miss class.
This is the second times I have had Grubbs as a professor and I think he is by far the best teacher Ive had at this campus. Knows what he is talking about, and goes out of his way to help his students learn, just wants them to figure things out. He is fair and straightforward and I love his teaching style.
Professor Grubbs is a very knowledgeable professor in Organic Chemistry and Pharmacology but he is not very approachable when asking questions during class or during office hours. He is very awkward and does not really communicate well. He teaches the subject well but not approachable or friendly.
The problems on the exams here are significantly harder than the practice problems we do in class and in the Explore Mores. Doing 25 problems in 55 minutes is not reasonable. it seems like we are being set up to fail. I feel like this entire course has been a waste of my time, energy, and money.
He is a very knowledgeable and experienced professor. He is engaging and incorporates humor during his lectures. His lectures are organized so that a logic-oriented mindset can follow along with ease. He provides techniques on how learn and find the solution to a problem. He provides various resources for practice. The course is hard.
I loved Pharmacology way more than OChem. Though it was a long class, it went by super quickly because the lectures were engaging. Grubbs always gave us worksheets or warm-ups to help reinforce what we were learning. He gave us lots of practice questions similar to what we would expect to see in grad school. the jokes and puns are great.
I find him harder to defeat than the COVID19 outbreak. He's like the final boss in your favorite video game. In all seriousness, I think he is semi condescending when you ask him questions and I follow along in class but find the exams to be at a level he does not prepare you for. He is funny, but not teaching me ochem.
He is terrible and does not care at all about his students. He is rude and demeaning when students attempt to ask for help. He makes rude jokes about students' grades during class and makes a point to make students feel inferior especially during office hours. I would not take him again and wouldn't take this class or O-chem II at GCU.
He's always willing to help and does a great job of explaining the material. He's engaging and his lectures are well organized. He provides techniques on how to memorize, learn, and solve problems. Dr. Grubbs has high expectations and his tests challenge students. I strongly recommend this man for students that want to learn and are hard workers.
Taking Dr. Grubbs' classes became the pivotal moment in my undergraduate career... preconceived notions about organic chemistry are a myth. Read before lecture. Do your homework. Attend Explore More sessions. Dr. Grubbs challenges you, only to further develop your learning ability. You can get the grade you want, just work for it.
Dr. Grubbs is top notch. His classes will be the most difficult class you take at GCU, but they will well prepare you for graduate school. Many will say that his courses are too difficult. Don't listen to them. Those are the future healthcare administrators talking. If you want to succeed in med school, you must first succeed in Dr. Grubbs' class.
While Dr. Grubbs may not have the most cheery demeanor, he is a very good instructor of organic chemistry and I am very thankful that I took him for both sections. The PowerPoints, examples, and additional materials are very helpful in understanding the concepts and reactions (not to mention the chem jokes sprinkled in). I would highly recommend.
Funny and kind professor, explains topics well. This class seems to be Dr. Grubbs favorite class to teach and because of that he's much more engaged and passionate about what he is teaching. Going in to look at tests and quizzes allowed for a better relationship and made me more comfortable speaking up and motivated me to do better in this class.
I would recommend this instructor because he teaches you step by step. He wants all his students to succeed. He tells everyone to go to the review sessions, do the homework and recopy the notes. Every morning we get participation exercises to check understanding. His exams and practice problems prepared me for the DAT.
Don't take his class if there's any chance of it being online. I don't want to give such a poor rating. Grubbs is the best organic chem professor I could have asked for, and he was super accessible when we were still on campus, but he has no tech skills, and none of the tests were optimized for online learning. Be careful taking him this fall.
I highly recommend taking Pharm as an undergraduate. I was prepared for med school Pharmacology.
I hated ochem and felt like I was put through hell during pharmacology, but they were actually so beneficial to me and I am so thankful he pushed us and held us to a higher standard than most. I honestly felt so prepared for grad school because of GCU - especially pharmacology. These classes solidified me wanting to become a pharmacist.
ochem was my favorite class and subject. He is a wonderful professor that works to improve and perfect lab and lecture.
Dr. Grubbs is extremely passionate about organic chemistry and does an excellent job of teaching at a level far above that of other undergraduate courses. Although the class is difficult at first, after proper adjustment, Dr. Grubbs presents all the information necessary to do well in the course. Go to office hours and he'll help you.
Grubbs takes some time to get used to. Once I figured out that exams questions were the same as Participation and Review Packet questions, thats all I studied and did well in his classes. His jokes are the best.
Truly loved his courses. Jokes help you remember important info. ochem and pharm made me a better thinker for med school.
Grubbs is difficult... well O Chem in general is difficult. Like CHM 231, it's very test heavy. Go to the review sessions & do the participation. Ask questions! Grubbs knows so much about the subject and he's pretty funny too. I took the course online this semester and it wasn't too bad we just did zoom for lecture, office hours, and exploremores.
Grubbs is all and all your best option for O-chem at GCU, this class is very difficult in general and I feel like sometimes this gets takin out on who teaches it. Grubbs is not bad at all and tries to put some nerd humor in he's lecture. Will take again.
Dr. G is really not that bad! The class is difficult but passable. Your best option for chemistry at GCU.
What a wonderful chance to learn - the organic chemistry and pharmacology classes were so useful - my research career was bolstered by his teaching.
I always say this was my hardest undergrad class but simultaneously my favorite. You cant expect to make it through a graduate medical program unless you develop some perseverance in advance. If everything is easy, you won't be ready for that challenge. You need some courses that are going to really require work out of you to develop.
After completing pharmacy school he's still one of favorite pharmacy professors. His class is by far the most challenging I took in undergrad and I can't thank him enough for that. It more than adequately prepared me for the next step and gave me a huge sense of satisfaction when I performed well. He's a big reason why I am at in my career.
Professor Grubbs is a hardworking professor and I respect his ability to teach online and in-person. The exams and material are tough, but he provided great resources and practice problems. I will miss his funny yet terrible jokes.
I enjoyed listening to him teach about drugs. I would recommend him to anyone. He knows what he is talking about and makes class engaging, interesting, and relevant. I finished every class period in awe of what I had just learned. He was incredibly helpful and insightful for how the content may be applied in the industry I plan to work in.
Very patient and knowledgeable in Chemistry. He was very helpful.
Dr. Grubbs is very good at explaining the concepts necessary for exams and quizzes. The extra worksheets are helpful as well as the explore more sessions offered. He was helpful in office hours. Blended learning with the IA was also extremely helpful in being successful in the course. I would recommend Dr. Grubbs for Organic Chemistry.
Does a good job at explaining mechanisms Professor Grubbs is a funny guy with a passion for teaching. His classes are hard, but he does his best to make it understandable and enjoyable.
He is the best professor to take for OChem2. He is literally a genius. NO cap.
His Pharm tests are at a graduate level yet he teaches at a undergrad level. All tests regard case studies that would only be known by a doctor. Participation is just another form of a quiz every week.
Easily best class i took at GCU. His classes push us so we can excel in grad school. Some just dont realize it yet.
His pharmacology classes WERE harder than my pharm school pharmacology courses. BUT, I was also better taught and prepared during them as well, so.... pretty much evens out.
Because of his pharm class, my IS classes at Midwestern are a BREEZE. I will admit that I did hate how challenging they were, but honestly when everyone asks me how I do so well in my pharmacy school I say I was simply prepared well by my pharmacology professor at GCU.
I enjoyed both OCHEM and pharm, as they challenged me to think, study, and apply myself in new and different ways.
Dr. Grubbs' courses prepared us for the rigor of graduate school!! His classes were definitely challenging during under-grad but we are thankful to have taken them during grad school.
An incredible O Chem professor! His class was for sure my favorite, and his teaching style was perfect for me.
He is an awesome professor! I very much enjoyed all my courses with him!
Good luck.
Dr. Grubbs is my favorite instructor on campus. He is extremely knowledgeable and very engaging and funny in the classroom. Even though you couldn't really hear anyone laugh because it was on zoom, his dad jokes were very funny and helped me stay engaged during the class that was unfortunately at 7 AM.
His courses will push you to your max, and sometimes past that. However, I can say after several semesters in his courses, my knowledge of organic chemistry and pharmacology is at a very high level, largely due his classes. Despite the rumors that he is intimidating and may not care about his students this couldn't be further from the truth.
He is one of the best professors that I've encountered, and although I wasn't the brightest student, I really enjoyed the class.
I definitely would recommend Dr. Grubbs. He understands that this is a tough course, and he does a really good job of giving us opportunities to learn the material. You could tell that he wanted the students to pass. His assignments were very helpful as well as his weekly participation reviews. He spent lots of time out of class helping students.
I have yet to take a class with a more structured lesson plan, that gave me every resource to do well on tests. Im glad his classes were hard because I have to study way more now in PA school. If I couldnt handle that how would I handle this
He's a phenomenal teacher!! Made me love OCHEM!
Ochem is super fun tho like Im serious if you get into it youll find it fun too.
I would not know half of what I know if I did not take courses with Dr. Grubbs.
This is the best class I have taken at GCU. The information is clear, and he continuously emphasizes what you should focus on when studying. This was the 7-week summer course and obviously fast paced; If you do not know something, just control find the word in your textbook (it never fails). Typing out notes is necessary!
he is my all-time favorite professor at GCU. I have learned about pharmacological treatment from Dr. Grubbs and it has left a significant impact on my future career. For certain, though the class can be challenging, he always wants success for his students and does whatever he can to provide the best experience possible.
Dr. Grubbs had a great sense of humor. The content of his course is more advanced than comparable classes at other universities. I took CHM231 with him and received a C+, yet received an A when I retook it. If you are concerned for your GPA, I would look at transferring the course in. My final grade (C+) was 10% higher than the class average.
By far the most difficult class I have ever taken. He lectured as if we knew the material already and never took time to explain things. Left the students to learn on their own. And when I went into office hours for some help, it was as if I was being annoying and he would not help me at all. Is as if he doesnt care about his students. AVOID!
Best Organic Chemistry Professor out there. He might look scary when you first meet him, but he is a pretty good dude and has a great sense of humor. Would recommend him anytime to those who want to succeed in O chem. Just an amazing professor.
Dr. Grubbs is by far the best prof I have ever had. I highly recommend learning with him. I still remember his teachings till this day in medical school.
Dr. Grubbs is the only reason I took this class, and I was so glad that I did. Dr. Grubbs made the material fun to learn. His expertise on the subject really shines through during his lectures. Pharmacology became one of my favorite classes. I will always recommend Grubbs for any class he teaches.
This professor loves teaching Organic Chemistry and really wants his students to succeed. This is a hard subject and he had resources available to help us study for the exam. Everything that was taught in class was easy to follow and the examples that are provided related to those on the exam. If you want to pass organic chemistry take Grubbs.
I think Professor Grubbs is a good teacher. However, I think it really depends on the student's learning style. I know there is a lot of controversy on how he teaches. But overall, I think he gives you the tools to succeed.
Prof. Grubbs was the best chemistry teacher I have ever had
Grubbs is an okay professor. He does make jokes in class but he moves very fast and expects you to understand concepts right away. This is a very tough class so be ready to do a lot of studying and practice outside of class. Overall he isn't the best professor but he isn't the worst choice.
You will enjoy Dr. Grubbs' lectures if you have a general understanding of the material before attending his class each week. While he does move quickly, he explains concepts well and makes comical remarks throughout the lecture.
Dr. Grubbs is the Man, though this class is very difficult Grubbs does his best to present the information needed for the quizzes and exams. This is my 3rd time having Grubbs as a professor and the only thing I didn't like about him was his jokes ;)
Grubbs is one of the best teaching professors I have ever had - he explains things clearly, concisely, and walks us through many helpful practice problems. He makes analogies and funny phrases so you remember concepts. I have learned so much in his class. He is often grumpy and antisocial but I don't mind, you just can't get offended by it.
He provides time in class to complete practice problems and he explains challenging problems. He made a stressful and challenging course much easier to understand. If you put in the effort and come prepared to learn in class he will help you understand the topics during lectures and office hours. He cares about his students if they show effort.
He explains the reasoning behind all concepts. He is an expert and a talented jokester. My undergrad experience would not have been the same without Dr. Grubbs. He teaches you to develop critical thinking skills that can be applied to any other class. He uses real world examples, is willing to answer questions, and provides good resources.
Dr. Grubbs is an excellent professor. He outlines the critical information for each topic and gives several resources for practice. He has a positive attitude and always tries to make students laugh.
One of the worst chemistry Professor I have ever had. OCHEM is a pretty tough class but he goes through everything really quick and does not really explain. Plus it is required to do a quiz with full grade to get participation point which is not fair.
Grubbs is a good professor overall but is hard to talk to. When you ask a question he is very quick and vague in explanation. Not super sociable. If you put in the time and study with groups it is definitely possible to succeed in this class.
I didn't mind Grubbs, really the only issue I had with him was his poor feedback during office hours. You are probably better off going to the ACE center instead of his office hours.
Get ready to study on your own . This professor is fast at teaching . Hard quizzes, avoid this class if you can .
231 is a very difficult course, he provides informative lectures and a lot of good practice material to prepare you for exams. He also hosts weekly review sessions to review content for the week and prep students for exams. Grubbs explains material very well and clearly, prepares you for exams well.
He is very smart and knows his material but was very unclear on how to solve certain problems. He would also speed through slides and made it hard for me to follow along with the class and I would easily get lost. In order to understand the material, I had to look at Dr. Smith's videos on youtube on my own time.
Dr. Grubbs is a great professor for OCHEM. The class is very difficult and it can be easy to get lost during lecture. There were multiple times when I got confused. However, I sought out Dr. Grubbs whenever I had any issues. He provides a lot of practice problems. He is honest about how often you should be studying and preparing for the exams.
Great prof who tries his best. The class itself is very hard so one will still have to put in a ton of work outside of class to make sure they cover the material and get enough practice. One issue though is that sometimes the tests do not do a good job of testing the material and some of it seems out of scope for this class.
Dr. Grubbs goes above and beyond the calling of being a professor. The additional resources and review sessions he gives us is purely out of the kindness of his heart. He cares about his students and makes it manageable. Many students complain about the course, but its supposed to be difficult. Super thankful for him.
He knows his drugs. The concepts learned in this class align very well with previous topics in other rigorous courses. This is by far the hardest class I have taken at GCU and it is definitely among the ones that have taught me the most. Dr. Grubbs teaches how to think clinically and approach patient treatments from the clinician's perspective.
Dr. Grubbs is an outstanding professor, He's really good in class, engaging and answering questions. He makes sure to repeat concepts or mechanisms multiple times before an exam. He also makes an extremely hard class fun, by making jokes that you can't help but chuckle too. Dr. Grubbs is an overall amazing professor and one of the best at GCU.
HE WRITES HIS OWN REVIEWS!! DO NOT TRUST ANYTHING. This should be all the red flag you need.
Organic Chemistry is a hard class regardless but professor Grubbs did have ways of making the material easier to understand. He focuses his lectures on material he wanted you to know and if you did the reviews, and some of the old exams/quizzes provided it made it better. He also provides links to Ron Smiths videos if you need another way learning.
He was a good professor but he expects you to actually go over material everyday and I do recommend you do that. His review guides are super helpful especially if you review them in his office hours. Attendance is not mandatory but it is important since paying attention helps. He may be scary to approach but do it and your grade will not regret it.
He is amazing and is a great instructor. He teaches one of the hardest courses, which creates a lot of stress for students. He takes great care to go over things thoroughly and is readily available for students. He is humorous, and this makes the stress from this class much more manageable. He is clearly very knowledgeable and is very qualified.
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing his jokes throughout the semester. He teaches a concept and then had us work through practice questions. His method of teaching really helped us learn how to think clinically. During his office hours, he was always so patient and would do his best to provide a detailed explanation as to why certain answers were wrong.
Dr. Grubbs is the best professor I have had in my three years at GCU. He is knowledgeable, highly respected, competent, an excellent communicator, and does his best to help his students succeed.
I definitely would recommend Dr. Grubbs as a professor. He understands that this is a tough course, and he does a really good job of giving us opportunities to learn the material. You could tell that he wanted the students to pass the course and learn the course material.
Dr. Grubbs knows a lot about the subjects he teaches and knows how to prepare his students for his quizzes and exams.
Grubbs has a good sense of humor but as a professor, he lacks the understanding that chemistry is hard for a lot of students. He does not typically take the time to explain how he solves problems and rushes through lectures because they are "easy" according to him. Look down to write down the notes and he will have already moved to the next part.
Grubbs is not the problem with organic chemistry at GCU. The problem is the department setup. Organic chemistry is a tough course in general. Grubbs is extremely knowledgeable in this subject. Hs makes jokes in class and will walk around and provide feedback as you work the problems. Honestly, take Ochem outside of GCU. You won't regret it.
Smart man. Dr. Grubbs is VERY knowledgeable. However, he is not the best professor to take if you do not learn well from passive listening. You have to know the textbook well for pharm. He is very accessible outside of class. **Please note** know what you're asking because he is not the best explainer.
Prof. Grubbs is very knowledgeable and has good lectures. He goes through a lot of material fast, so outside reading is required if you want to do well. This class should be longer for the amount of material covered. This is why attending the reviews and office hours are crucial. He seems difficult to approach, but isn't so go to office hours.
Grubbs is a great professor however he does go through the material quickly and is hard to understand if you didn't do any preparation before class. So make sure that you watch Smith's YouTube videos before you go to lecture. To pass this class you have to make sure you watch the videos and do the reviews over and over again.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR CHEM113/CHEMISTRY I!! He very clearly is used to more advanced students, and is not fitting to teach a beginning chemistry class. His lectures are often unclear, despite his good practices. He does review if content done in last class but even then he barely makes any sense. Class relies on good test grades. Just avoid him tbh.
Dr Grubbs has been my instructor for Organic Chemistry and this semester in Pharmacology. He is one of the most qualified, thoughtful, and helpful professors at GCU. His material is planned out perfectly and he strikes just the right balance between challenging and "doable". A bit quiet when you first meet him.
I really liked this professor. Made O-chem a very fun class to sit through. I was attentive the entire class period and I felt like a learned a lot.
Definitely not for everyone, if you have previous knowledge you'd probably do fine, but if you are a newbie to chemistry you won't know what's going on.
Dr. Grubbs is an incredible teacher and just a cool guy, a bit quiet when you first meet him but you can tell he has a really good sense of humor. He makes a difficult subject very easy to understand and is a great professor. He definitely prides himself in the fact that his exams are quite difficult, but I don't think that they're unfair.
Take him for the his jokes. Great guy!
Grubbs is the best organic chemistry professor GCU will ever find. He is one of my favorite professors at GCU. He is intelligent and hilarious. He puts in so much of his time and is patient with students. While he may seem closed off at times during office hours he makes up for it during class time. I would absolutely recommend Grubbs.
Best prof for ochem. Extremely hard class, be warned. Grubbs lectures: focus on practice problems. Smith lectures: focus on in-depth chapter content. Grubbs prepares you well e.g mnemonics, memory tools, warns abt areas students make little mistakes. Dry and direct, but wants you to succeed! Not accessible on Halo / email. Office hours are better!
Dr. Grubbs is certified awesome, he is very knowledgeable, interactive, and funny. I recommend him as an instructor to all students.
Professor Grubbs makes Organic Chemistry easier with his engaging lectures and helpful resources like Ron Smith videos. Tough but manageable with regular study using tools like unstuck AI.
Dr. Grubbs is one of the best professors at GCU. While chemistry is not my subject, Dr.Grubbs made all the chemistry classes I took with him so much fun! To get a good grade, you just have to study the material he gives you. He also lets you know what is on the exams in class!! I would always take Dr.Grubbs again.
Dr. Grubbs is very intimidating at first but does care about the success of his students. Sometimes his explanations are not the best, but make sure to review the information with the help of the YouTube videos. He provides weekly review guides which make up some of the exam questions. This is a difficult course so use other resources!
laughed because I failed the final💔
Professor Grubbs is a great professor if you can learn by listening and doing example problems. His class is a lot easier when you watch Ron Smith's YouTube videos before the lecture. I suggest getting a tutor for his class and going to reviews helps so much. You will succeed if you go to reviews and use your resources.
This is not a bad professor, but the class itself is hard and takes lots of work. He knows his chemistry and teaches it pretty well, but since there is so much content he has to speed through it. He is also a socially awkward guy, so office hours are not much help. Since he is the only OChem teacher rn, he's the only choice. Not bad, but not great.
Dr. Grubbs is one of my favorite professors at GCU. I took Dr. Grubbs for ochem 1, ochem 2, and pharm. His lectures are engaging, clear, and he gives you opportunities to practice concepts in class. Dr. Grubbs is extremely knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches. He provided us with lots of resources and practice questions for pharmacology.
Grubbs has to be the worst professor at GCU. I couldn't stand him for O-chem so I switched professors. He writes things on the board, but doesn't explain the logic behind it. Additionally, he is socially awkward and hard to approach. Apparently too many people were getting A's in O-chem so he decided to teach the material at a graduate level. AVOID
The way Dr.Grubbs posts his rate my professor reviews to his public Facebook just goes to show how much he prides himself on being a tough professor.
Dr. Grubbs is knowledgeable and engaging professor. Organic chemistry is a tough course, but Dr Grubbs does a great job in keeping students on track, all the resources provided and review sessions given have helped me so much.
Dr. Grubbs was just alright.... He lacked a lot of compassion for his students. He genuinely could care less if you needed help, or had a question. He almost made you feel stupid for asking a question. I did appreciate the amount of practice problems he gave us but other than that I struggled and didn't feel welcomed by him at all.
Gives us plenty of class time to work on practice problems and goes through it with the class, Sometimes hard to approach but will tell you when your doing the problem wrong. He informs us how to study for his exams although they are extremely difficult. He has reviews almost every Monday with additional practice problem help which is beneficial.
Dr. Grubbs is a fantastic instructor for Pharmacology and Organic Chemistry. He makes class entertaining with stories and he has many jokes under his sleeve. He gives plenty of resources for his students to be successful and provides websites to use for additional practice questions.
This course is extremely difficult but definitely manageable.., make sure to attend every review session and seek help early if needed. The ACE centers are super beneficial since Grubbs is often difficult to approach and he laughs instead of answering questions. Honestly study the review guides, pay attention to his helpful hints, and you got this!
Although Grubbs is not everyone's favorite professor, I will say he is an expert in the material. The class itself is rigorous, but if you take advantage of the material given and study hard, you will succeed.
Organic chemistry is a tough class no matter who your professor is, but Dr. Grubbs is extremely knowledgeable and provides us with a huge amount of practice material. The exams are HARD but if you practice and work hard you will do well! Grubbs was always helpful to me in his office hours and made sure I figured out why I made the mistakes I did.
CHM-232 was a huge challenge but certainly doable with Dr. Grubbs. His lectures are helpful, and he provides ample practice material and old exams to make sure we're as prepared as possible for our exams. It's certainly a tough class but Grubbs made it fun, interesting, and relevant. If taking him once is good, taking him twice is better.
Dr. Grubbs is very knowledgeable in his subject matter. He knows his stuff and he tells you how to do everything the right way. But he is not very approachable, and a lot of people feel scared to ask for help. He expects you to grasp difficult concepts immediately, and can make you feel stupid for asking questions.
Dr. Grubbs did a great job of providing students with examples and resources to do well in the class.
Dr Gvubbs was fairly solid on a good day. I appreciated his persistence. He clearly has been fighting his whole life, and it shows in his effort and face. He's a fighter.
He was great. Lecture was fun. Exams are too hard for undergrad tbh, but I guess that's a good thing
Dr. Grussell was my first teacher at GCU and per stirpes, he was difficult but not too difficult. It is clear that he was educated at top universities as he knows his stuff. He is more difficult than the other professors I've had, Dr Ashford, Dr Gary, and Dr Trendendez. Most importantly, he is highly regarded.
Dr. Gvubbs was an excellent professor. I learned a great deal under his tutelage. He takes the time to explain the concepts in a clear and concise manner. Thank you!
He is kind and funny, however, during his lectures he will ignore you if you raise your hand you have to wait until he lets you do your individual work because for half the class, sometimes more, he will have you working on practice problems. Also, memorization is an extremely important part since his test are mostly based on what you memorize.
He takes half the lecture to do review worksheets, but makes sure you understand the material. Up to 3 or 4 assignments can be due during heavy weeks. Tests are accurate to what we learned in class.
If you want to pass CHM113 and understand it, do not take his class. He is funny and a good person but he does not explain things well, his lectures are so boring, and he doesn't answer questions well. Your best bet is going to office hours after every lecture and getting a tutor. Never have I cried so much, good luck.
Overall, I thought that Grubbs was a good teacher, his participation worksheets that we did weekly, were very similar to what was on the exam. I felt like he did a good job going over everything that was on the tests, and his tests weren't too difficult.
Grubbs is a good person and does have a lot of cool tips to remember the chem materials. However, it'd be a lot of extra work since he move fast-paced with lecture. Half of the class usually going over participation, quizzes and midterm are much like the participation. He's accessible outside of class but he does make me feel bad asking questions
Dr. Rubbs teaches with passion and intensity. It's as if he is playing a championship basketball game with the game on the line. He challenges the student in ways I did not expect. I appreciate his dedication and his thoroughness but do wish he would smile more as he comes across as intimidating.
He was rather dry and didn't engage with the class much, but he was good at teaching. The participation worksheets were super helpful because they had very similar content to the tests on them. He would also make students do the problems in class, then go through them, which was incredibly helpful.
