Rus is open minded and encourages everyone's ideas. He has a positive attitude and treats all students equal. I really enjoy his example speeches and stories because he is descriptive, expressive and has a cute smile! If you want to have fun while learning how to speak in front of others, this is definately the class to take!

Mr. Hong is very fair to all students. Anyone who trys will get a easy A. I would take him again. I wish he was teaching they next level of communicatin either spc15 or 8

Russell is really nice.I have a lot of fun in this class. if you have perfect attendance, you didn't have to take the final quiz. i definitely recommended taking his class. he is really nice and fair. you'll want to come to class not because u have to, but because u like it.

He is great. His feedbacks to students are always positive a encouraging. Quizzes are easy if you glance thur chapters for main points and notes. His class is fun and enjoyable.

He is a very easy going teacher and I am glad that he is teaching at Mission College now. Everyone in the class enjoy his teaching style. This is the most interesting class that I have never ever found. I wish he will be teaching other classes in Mission College in the near future. Highly recommended!

Really nice and friendly teacher who is really laidback and guides you through the different speeches. 3 quizzes, one final quiz (perfect attendance people get to skip it) and speech topics are VERY flexible. Enjoyed the class a lot, really sad when it ended.

Helpfully with the speeches. since i took this class in the summer, everything went by fast. attendance mandatory in order to not take the final quiz. 3 quizzes. 3 big speeches. 4 small ones. topics are very interesting. i really recommend taking his class.=] i was madd sad when the class ended. =/

I dread speaking in front of people but this was a really fun class. It's an easy class but definitely not for slackers, if that makes sense.

He's a really funny teacher and very clear on what needs to be done. If you need help he will put his life on the line to help you. He is very respectful toward all his students and this has been my favorite class in De Anza College. Because of him, i am able to communicate with others with confidence. He will improve your speech skills, I promise.

If you're afraid to get out there and talk? This is the class for you! And there's no better instructor to take it with!!! He knows how to teach! and you'll enjoy every moment of it! He's also full of humor! Believe me, not only will you learn, you'll also have fun doing so!

GREATEST TEACHER EVER! He always shows up to class in a great mood and makes sure to learn everyone?s name. He really cares about his students and wants them to do well. It?s an easy A just do your outlines and speeches. There are a few easy quizzes but he lets you know exactly what is on them and gets rid of one if you have perfect attendance.

I enjoyed going to his class! There are 3 short speeches and 3 longer ones but you'll end up wanting more. He truly cares all students- he'll remember your name and interests by 2nd week. He asks students to speak naturally and encourages with life lessons. I was surprised that I became enthusiastic. I'll never forget his class. THANKS RUSSELL :)

I just wanted to take that class just for the easy grade and credit, i didn't care if i wanted to learn anything, just leave and go, but this class changed my mindset, i actually got something out of this class and learned a lot, it was a funn class! it's easy and you learn! 7:30am class is kinda a pain though, haha. this teacher is great!

I don't think I've ever been able to show so much of my self and memorize the names of all my classmates. REALLY easy A...or maybe he just taught it too well haha

Russell reads these and I think it affects how he presents himself or how he wants people to see him. Overall, he is a great instructor. Always seems enthusiastic. Not yet boring. Don't like the daily social interaction and group activities but hey, this is what the class is for. I think because of him, I'm actually gonna survive this course.

Amazing class. Never got bored. Easy assignments. You'll make friends with your entire class and won't be afraid to do any presentations. If you attend every class and are never late, you won't need to take the final. The book is only for the quizzes. TAKE HIM.

EASY CLASS.. just show up and do your speeches. He will get rid of your stage freight and it is a very encouraging class. He doesn't disrespect anyone. Quizzes are a bit hard but just go to class and study you'll get an A

Makes everyone feel comfortable in the class. You think public speaking would be terrifying but Russel makes it relaxed and actually fun. The class is basically participation based if you present your speech you basically get full credit. A few quizzes but their stupid easy. A great class and easy A for sure

I totally didn't look forward to a 730am class not to mention during summer, but somehow Russell actually made me look forward to going to class! He is funny and helps a lot of people break out of their "shell". The group projects are fun as well.

There are 4 quizzes. If you attend to all the classes, then you don't have to take the last quiz. Each quiz worth 25pts. His class is interesting and fun. There are several presentations. So if you hate it, then avoid this class then. But all of the presentations are on great topics. Great teacher :)

I took 2 classes with him, some of his jokes I heard twice but I still laugh at the second time. His class was a life-changing course for me. He is awesome!!Must take!!

Awesome teacher!!! Offers to write everyone letters of recommendation! Tells you what questions will appear on the tests. Teaches you things you will actually remember and use for the rest of your life. Also if you show up for every class you do not have to take the final!

OMG!!! He is fun and easy!! Just make sure you attend all the class meeting and turn in speech outline on time and give your speech out of your HEART! If you attend all the class meeting you dont have to take a final, he will automatically give 30 out of 30 on the final exam :)

One of the best professors I have ever had! He really loves his job and wants you to do well. I took him once a week on Fridays so we had one big speech one week then a small speech the next and a quiz every other week. After every speech he sits down with you and tells you what you did well on and what you can do better on next time.

best professor ive had thus far, hes hella passionate about his job, and it makes you want to do well in his class AND in life. also, it helped other students come out of their shells more, he is a really good teacher. assignments and presentations are easy as HELL! and you won't put too much work into this class, highly recommened. must take.

You guys don't understand how much you NEEED this professor.

GREAT!!!! Teacher, teaches you how to apply everything you learned in real life situations. Makes you comfortable with the class so that giving presentations wont be so nerve wrecking. 3 presentations total only one of them is by yourself. Small cheap book, quizzes are by book and lecture. Easy to pass if you just come to class and follow along.

Day 1 to the end, Russell was one of the best examples of what a teacher should be. Knew he had to keep us interested AND teach us stuff. Very consistant, class is not EASY, per se, but he made it easy. Expect to work, but you won't die. It was interesting and fun; do yourself a favor, don't take this class with anyone else! Glad I did!

Life changing class. Russell is a down to earth guy. Never felt comfortable speaking infront of people,but being in this class brought the best out of me. Russell is super easy going and laid back professor that I've had so far at De Anza. He helps everyone overcome the fear of public speaking. You're gonna learn lots of public speaking tips in his class. Guaranteed an A. He gives you 2ish quizes because you don't need to take the third one if you have perfect attendance. Russell is the best professor I've ever had in De Anza. He is a veeeeeery funny and attractive person, he make the class never boring, NEVER!!! No need to take final exam if u have perfect attendance. Not hard to get an A, but only if you have passion to give speechs. You cannot expect more for a speech class. Take it. Russell is an incredible instructor and I found this class very useful. He does a more hands on (application approach) rather than lecture. If you do the work, come to class on time & have perfect attendance, study for quizzes, you will do well. I definitely recommending taking this class.

I totally agree with how Russell has a great personality. He is a very lay back instructor, definitely shouldn't take advantage of that by talking or interrupting the class. He has a lot of experience and teaches you great tools to be successful in communicating. Take this class if you do everything he asks you will get a great grade.

Russell is a very animated teacher who is passionate about what he is teaching. The class is a lot of fun and interactive plus he usually lets students out 30min early! He grades really easily even if English isn't your first language! An easy A if you pay attention to his lectures!

Russell is a really good teacher. He has a really strict attendance policy and a couple of the midterms (5 question quizzes) were a bit tricky, but he gives full points for everything else you turn in. Easy A if you SHOW UP and DO your work.

Awesome speech teacher! It was my first time taking a speech class and at the beginning I hated public speaking. By the end I wasn't as nervous about it. Participation and being punctual is super important to him. If you don't miss any classes you don't have to take the final quiz. It's not a difficult course.

Prof Hong is spectacular! Everyone in the class loves him because he's such a chill teacher to be around. He enjoys making his students feel comfortable when speaking and no need to take the final if you have perfect attendance. I recommend taking his courses because they are really enjoyable and you make a lot of friends since its a speech class.

Honestly, one of THE BEST speech classes I have ever taken. Russ definitely makes sure that the classroom vibe is comfortable and easy-going from day one, which makes public speaking so much easier. I came into this class hating public speaking, but Russell makes you feel comfortable to talk. He made the classroom feel like a positive environment and this was the only class where I knew everyone's names. Easy A if you put in at least a little effort into your speeches!

Best Professor I have ever had! He is kind, fluent, smart. When I am stuck on my speech, he always calm down and give us good grade. He is not bad at all. I mean I learned alot from him, and he is so so so professional! HE IS SUPERB!! I love his Speech 10!! He made me have new friends!!

If you show up and apply yourself as a student to his class and the work he assigns you will have no problem passing and enjoying the course. You build friendships in his class as it is important to him that we treat others how we would like to be treated. Respectful environment and empowering.

Russell's class is probably one of the very few classes I have taken at De Anza that I LOOKED FORWARD to going to. He respects his students, and for that reason, many of his students seem to respect him. Show up, do your work, PARTICIPATE, and you'll do well in his class.

This is a class you have to commit to working with your group. As many spch classes are, you will bond with your entire class. The basis of this class is based on discussion and executing facilitations/presentations, which means YOU are the ones teaching the class. Come to every class (ON TIME*) and you don't have to take the final.

Russell really cares and is incredibly devoted to his students. He built such a cohesive classroom environment. The materials we learned in class is very applicable to real life and it teaches you how to think critically. He has great character. This class was definitely one of my favorite classes at De Anza.

I hate speaking in front of a group (anxiety probs), but I definitely wasn't scared to do just that in this class. The way he teaches welcomes all kinds of opinions and whatnot so there wasn't a lot of fear of speaking up! The class consists of one big facilitation (group presentation) and a bunch of interesting case studies. Take this class!!!!

Russell Hong was a very cheerful instructor that I have had for speech 10. another thing is that if you have perfect participation you do NOT have to take his cumulative final quiz. Perfect participation means NOT more than 10 mins late to class, showing up on time, participating in group work, and NOT having any unexcused absences.

I just took this amazing class. Very organized. Love the lectures. love the group projects. Couldn't believe that the class really liked my presentation. At the first, I didn't want to do the video in order to get some extra points since I had enough points for an A. However, one of my group members motivated me. We got the BEST video!!!

His class was alright. He's a good professor and really cares about his students, but if your group for the final presentation isn't good, then the quality of the class will REALLY go down for you so make sure you really think through your choice of topic. Well, I was used to be a shy person before taking his class. Now I can talk in public easily. He is the one who took away my fear when it comes to speak. He cares about all his students and grade. You will have 4 minor speeches (60 to 90sec), 3 big speeches (4.30 to 6.30min) and 3 quiz (If you have perfect attendance u won't take the final quiz).

I took COMM 10 with Russell over the summer quarter and it was honestly such an amazing experience. I love his teaching style, his passion and his energy everytime he comes to class. Prof. Hong really did make the class feel welcoming. He switches things up on you like moving you to a new table with new people a couple weeks in to the quarter. He wants you to succeed and do well with presentations. Gives great feedback and is pretty laid back.

Take it from a student that has put off speech for the past 5 years because I was too nervous & why to take this class because Im not a confident person to make speeches. He makes class so easy going, I would honestly take him again if he were to teach another subject.

Very caring teacher and wants everyone to succeed. If you have anxiety about public speaking I highly suggest taking him! You wont regret it. He makes you feel comfortable.

I took Russell online during COVID with scheduled meetings. His class has no tests, only speeches, which I feel like was less nerve wracking because it was via zoom. This class teaches you some life skills like what to do for a job interview as well as the textbook content. (You don't reallyyy need the textbook but it's good for reference.)

Russell was the most charismatic teacher I have ever had at De Anza. His willingness to help students learn and grow really shows, and this goes beyond just his class. Russell creates a positive and exciting environment that engages and pushes students to grow & flourish. He helped to push me out of my comfort zone and discover my true abilities.

Russell is the best professor I've had at De Anza. He has an amazing energy & truly cares about his students. He creates a tight-knit environment by having students connect. Participation is encouraged & attendance is a must. A group facilitation & weekly discussions are assigned based on readings/class lectures. You won't regret taking his class!

As someone who has anxiety, Russell made the class enjoyable and comfortable. The speeches weren't scary to do because everyone was so supportive and it was a fun environment. Great professor! Wish I could take him again

This class is amazing, to say the least. I've taken comm before and I've dropped because the workload was insane or the teacher was too boring. That is absolutely not the case with Professor Hong. He is a real person with a heart and a great professor. You guys will not regret taking this class. I'd take it again 1000 times if I could.

This class is pretty draining for an introvert and sometimes I found myself kind of confused but Russell is a really good guy with a nice personality. The hardest thing in this class was the Facilitation which was kind of like teaching one of the classes yourself. There's a reader (10 bucks) and a textbook, lots of reader use, v little textbook.

Professor Hong is nice and caring for his students with his unique way of teaching. Try your best to participate in the class. But you won't be nervous at all in his classes, which reinforce communication and problem-solving skills through discussions and group projects. Very useful and practical! Definitely recommend him to you!

I took this man's class 2 years ago and realized i never put up a review for him, but his class was so good i remember it vividly anyway. best teacher ive ever had. 10/10 in all regards, just take his class it slaps.

I have bad social anxiety, but this class was alright for me. His class structure is organized, and the assignments are simple. He also provides insightful constructive criticism and responds with nice comments. However, I will note that he says his negative feedback in the same tone as his positive one, so it comes off as passive-aggressive?

Great and engaging professor! Class graded on a total of 6 speeches (2 of them are group speeches) with 3 outlines, 5 discussions & 5 assignments. I think that this class was really easy to manage with my STEM classes. Highly recommend this professor if you need it for a GE class or are simply looking to become more confident in public speaking.

Russel was my favorite teacher for my 1st quarter at De Anza. I came into this class dreading having to speak in front of a whole classroom, but Russel makes it so easy to do so. He warms you up by speaking in small groups, speaking to the class in groups, and helps you build a solid outline for your speech. GED or not, it's a great class.

Professor Hong is one of the best professors at De Anza. I took him online and he was great so in person he's probably even better. Go into class with a positive attitude and you'll have a good time along with earning an A. Just make sure you are being on top of your other group members and that everyone knows what they are presenting.

Even if I chose the wrong COMM on accident I don't even regret my time there literally it's easy and just do the work nothing too complicated and you are all set easy A make sure don't slack off though.

This class basically has no hw, except for occasional written assignments and preparing for presentations in class. That makes this class a really easy 5 credits. But that doesn't mean you don't learn anything. On the contrary, you learn a lot about how to effectively communicate by doing exactly that in class. Also, Russell is a great guy.

I despise talking, yet I'm so glad I chose to take Russell. From day one, he created an amazing and comfortable environment. You'll learn effective communication techniques from the lectures, homework assignments and presentations. As long as you do what you need to and put effort in, you'll get a good grade. This class is an easy five credits!

RUSSEL IS A G !!!!! He genuinely cares about his students & really wants to see them succeed, even if they're not great at public speaking. His main emphasis is on improvement which is so refreshing.

hated public speaking but he's so genuine and very sweet. great attitude when teaching. great feedback with speeches and makes me feel more prepared for the next one. even though im so shy, would 100% retake this class.

I loved Russell's class! I am not a very social person, but he made it easy to feel comfortable in his class and really showed he cares! I have never rated a professor before, I hope this goes to show how much respect I have for him. As long as you follow directions and turn stuff in, you will have an A. There are 5 speeches total. Take this class!

Excellent and caring teacher. The most challenging in this course was the 5 speeches needed to present in front of the class. Other than that, turn in all ur homework on time and you'll get an easy A.

The best class I have taken so far, knowledgeable, shows care and concern for students, friendly , kind and provides prompt review and feedback. Very helpful too

My only favorite Professor in De Anza

Comm class can be very scary for some students, but he truly makes it fun that my fear of speeches has truly gone away by the end of the quarter. He cares so much about his students, and gives the best feedback on how to improve your speeches. He is truly one of the best teachers i have ever had :')

Please take this class if you get a chance and provided the slots are not full, Russell is one of the best professors at De Anza, he is so caring thoughtful and knowledgable .Vey humble and respects all, treats you not a s a student but as a friend. Took him in Fall 2022. Very very caring and kind professor! I would highly recommend his class to anyone, he is such a perfect teacher! If you are shy or have anxiety, you will feel very encouraged and supported in his class.

If you haven't had Russel as a professor before you're missing out. He is the best professor at Deanza. He has all the qualities you'd want from a teacher. His lectures are so engaging and he feels like a real friend. If you're scared of public speech COMM 10 is the perfect class because I went in with stage fright and left with stage confidence.

If you are an introvert, take him COMM 10 class. He was so encouraging and amazing. I hate public speaking but I look forwards to his class every week. We had 5 speeches, one individual, 2 group work and 2 speeches where we could work individually or choose teammates by ourselves. Participation does matter so don't skip out.

Definitely and highly recommended. I would love to take the class again if I could.

Took Russell's class during Spring 2023 and loved it! Even though I would consider myself more of an introvert, Russell created a safe environment in his classroom for students to feel more comfortable while speaking. To anyone who doesn't know if they should take this class, DO IT!! RUSSELL ROCKS!!

Russell is one of the sweetest and best profs I've had. Super caring and very clear of what he expects. 5 presentations: 1 group, 2 smaller, and 2 larger ones towards the end of the quarter. He values punctuality, so please get there on time and be ready to learn! Take him if you get the chance, he's a wonderful professor :)

Took over the past summer, very kind professor. Class is very interactive and participation matters. Individual and group speeches. He gives outlines for speeches and topics to choose from (you can also choose your own). Some online homework but very easy to do. Very easy grader. Overall fun class!

Professor Hong was one of my favorite instructors as he was always very interactive and helped everyone work on their personal goals. He makes speeches seem so easy as he helps you overcome all your stage anxieties. He is such a person and knows how to keep the class interesting. After taking his class presentations became easier.

Taken two comm classes with Professor Hong and both were successful and fun! Each assignment has a clear purpose and is not just seen as busy work. He takes the time and effort to listen to his students' needs at the same time. Although it can be challenging for some people to take public speaking, you will feel a lot more comfortable in his class.

Easy going and friendly, Russell is someone who brings out the best in you! Three big speeches to go with 5 small activities rather than engagements allows students to interact while in class and form a great bonding. Grading scheme could be a bit heavy for some but he is super understanding and as long as you follow his directives, you are good!

Took him in the winter. So kind and friendly! Makes the classroom a community, everyone felt comfortable with each other. Around 3 big speeches (most under 5 min, 1 group speech) and some discussion posts. You will have to memorize (or improvise) your speech! Highly recommend, especially if you have public speaking anxiety. He's very understanding.

Definitely take Russell for public speaking if you can, he's super chill and fun. Always hated and struggled with public speaking but he made it a safe space for everyone and was always available for help. take it in person if you can too because he's just a great dude.

Mr Hong has been my favorite professor so far. He is funny, kind, and very genuine. He was always able to keep the class engaged and he gave great feedback after every speech. 10/10 professor!

Russell was the best. I hate public speaking, but he lets you speak about almost anything you want and gives great feedback which makes it easy. There were only 8 speeches that were graded on including the final, but if you show up and speak about something you'll get a good grade.

Russell was honestly one of the most memorable professors on campus honestly. He's easy to talk to, gets along with everyone, good sense of humor, and gives good customized feedback to his students. I still carry a lot of knowledge that he taught us with me! 10/10 would take again!

Professor Hong's COMM10 class is a game-changer for public speaking. He fosters a supportive environment where even introverts can thrive. Best professor ive taken of all time. super kind, energetic & encouraging classroom environment. I left very sad and became a new person. Professor hong is such a golden retriever, and the classroom is so full of love. the things I would do to go back to his classes. A+ wasnt difficult, just do the assignments with love&engage presently in class

If you're nervous about taking a comms class, there is genuinely no need to worry with him - he's very understanding and makes the class easy. You have 7 speeches overall but it's not as bad as it sounds. I went into this class thinking I wasn't going to like it but ended up truly enjoying it and looked forward to it. Going to miss it next quarter.

What a goat. This dude makes giving speeches so easy and is generous with points. You can give a speech on anything and as long as give it you'll probably pass (not with a high grade though). I'm the type of person not really care about profs and just goes to class to pass, but this dude makes me want to go to class bc he makes class fun. W prof

It was an easy A class. His class was engaging and fun, and the atmosphere was always relaxed with no pressure. He made giving speeches feel much easier and less intimidating. The feedback was always clear, kind, and helpful. I felt like I improved a lot without feeling stressed. Definitely one of the best classes I've taken!

They are a great professor who fosters a very welcoming space. They are pretty lenient with the speeches and provide constructive feedback. They also offer some extra credit for answering questions and performing speeches early or with other people. I would highly recommend taking this professor, especially if you struggle with public speaking.

HE'S GOATED!!! His class was extremely engaging and made speaking easy. He's generous with points and provides excellent constructive feedback. Russell gave us lots of freedom to present on any topic, along with multiple opportunities for extra credit and group work. This is the most fun class I have taken yet. I STRONGLY recommend.

Its definitely easy to get an A in his class if you stay top of his work. He is very caring and supportive. He made the class funn and easy going!! You wouldn't regret taking him.

I took this class last school year and i still find myself missing it. Russell is really caring/understanding and genuinely one of the best teachers i've ever had in my life. This class was so fun but i still feel like i learned a lot and truly improved my public speaking skills. take this class, i guarantee you won't regret it.
