liberal..bashes anything and everything republican..fun guy tho
Best sleep I've ever gotten...monotone voice puts you out in less than 5 minutes...
Liberal, communist.... bashes Republicans like its his job...but I must say he is very fair and willing to help... going to class was kind of a waste because he was very unclear
it's impossible to stay awake in this class, becasue 1. his monotone voice 2. lack of any info in his lectures. waste of time
Really good guy and great professor. Very Fair and helpful!
very VERY VERY boring...class is a waste of time
his lectures are horrible. they are boring and don't help you in any way.
moron
Interesting guy, definitely liberal, but objective enough to hold discussions. Class lectures were a waste of time. Learned very little during whole semester. Take intermediate micro again and read an article or two on "law and econ" insted o
He is always flustered, and is behind in technology. His overheads are out of order all the time, and he puts up whole newspaper articles and acts like we can read them. Class is boring and pointless, but you need to go because he gives pop quizzes
Although some of the lectures were boring or confusing, Professor Janis and the TAs were always willing to explain things. I hated the eReserve articles but the textbook was interesting.
Gives pop quizzes so, go to class. The TAs are amazing so never miss a session. Sometimes lecture drags and he's just a mess -- you can tell, but it's not bad. A good course with good content and SCREW ERESERVE.
awful professor, worst class.. the time drags by. he talks really fast and shows up stupid articles you have no idea whats about
hard class to do well in- hard to pay attention and keep up- great teacher- him and ta's really care about helping students understand but def need to go out of your way to understand- smart cool guy and class is hard because of size only
Nice guy, horrible professor. AVOID THIS CLASS!!!
not a good teacher of the material, expects too much out of students. his questions are over the top difficult. not very concerned with the well being of the students. very unreasonable in his expectations. please don't take this course w/ janis as the proffessor. one of the biggest misktakes of
Horrible horrible class. He is very smart but absolutely cant teach. This class is so difficult to understand, and lectures are boring! Half the time you have no clue what hes talking about.Very disorganized. Tests are beyond difficult. Do NOT take a course with him ever!
He is a horrible professor. He is never prepared and gabs on and on about bush and how bad he does with the economy instead of actually teaching his students the material, avoid this professor
very nice as a person but cant teach to save his life! extremely disorganized. his lectures are all over the place. pretty much a self taught class. the only reason to go to class is for pop quizzes...otherwise letures are a complete waste of time.. lucky to stay awake for the entire class.
he should go back to practicing law...gave me an A though, so thanks
good prof, easy class! he explains things pretty well in class, a little confusing at first, but the TA's help out a lot w/ different examples on HW's and stuff... overall, easy class, nice guy, good teacher!
he is pretty unaccomodating to things, you will do well in this class if you read the book yourself and ask the TA's questions in discussions. He is not a good teacher in my opinion.
Inspiring.
He does everything in baby steps, which makes sense since it is a 100level course. I never even bought the book, all I did was use his notes and I got an A.
one of the worst classes ever. he sucks at teaching and doesn't know what he's talking about. the exams are ridiculous
supposed to be an easy class, yet he's confused about his material. didn't learn a thing. the TAs didn't know what they were talking about either. sucked.
This guy is awful, i think it was about the worst class i have taken here at umass, and i am a pre-med major.....
Lectures are extremely boring. Uses overhead with unclear graphs and writes terrible notes on another projector. Messes up explaining graphs then fumbles and attempts to redeem himself. Tests are incredibly hard as are OWLS and the stupid in-class quizzes. TA's also aren't very helpful. DO NOT take this class.
He is one of the worst teachers at UMASS and the armpit of the Economics department. Nuff said.
he sucks at teaching, no powerpoint, just crappy overhead which he screws up - tests are mad hard - he is the biggest tool on campus - don't take any of his classes whatever you do...
Janis is the worst professor in the department. I don't think the man has any clue what is going on. Worst professor I ever had.
interesting class. pretty much all the information you need for the exam is on the ereserves. do the readings and have a general idea what efficiency is and you'll get at least a B.
good teacher. go to class, he likes pop-quizzes. overheads are impossible to read, put your pens down and open ears. lectures are fun, read the cases, he will call you on them. tests are essay, offers extra-credit, do it. i don't know what people are complaining about, looks like they all took him for macro, they must not be econ majors. too bad
this man is completly unorganized he never has his stuff together before class and it always seems as if he procrastiating. He puts up overheads of news articles that no one can reads and vary really is helpfull in making people understand the topics. His in class examples are terrible, he gives out candy and money but explains nothing in doing so.
teacher ir very unorganized during lecture and very difficult to follow
Hes so hot leave him alone!
This guy is a train wreck. In all honesty he is the worst professor that I've had. His tests are terrible. ALOT of multiple choice, writen in a way that no one can understand what he is looking for. He's obnoxious, makes NO SENSE, and when you have an issue like I did, he is of no help what so ever. COMPLETELY disorganized. DONT take him!
I don't recommend taking this class with him. He goes too fast through the material, making it not even worth going to class because you have no time to take notes or comprehend what he's saying. I learn more in my discussion then i do in his class.
he was hillarious, really cool guy. his only drawback was that he did not explain things well in class but this may have been because of the limited amount of time. I did well in the class but only because its my major. i had an awesome TA who really helped. if ur willing to give the xtra effort you can do well in his course but it seems most dnt
the worst teacher i have ever had
Janis is horrible...please dont take the class...he sucks. I lost knowledge of economics after taking that class
Janis is a terrible teacher. He would go off on long tangents, getting himself and the entire class very confused. He would always say things backwards and have to correct himself (or a TA would) after I had already written down the notes. He was unorganized and not helpful. If you are going to take macro, take it with Crocker instead of Janis.
Janus is ok. He is boring and his notes unrecognizable. However, his grading scale is very fair. Just do ok on the the tests and great on the owls and your sure to land a B. I got a 65.5/70 on the first exam, 55/120 on the second and good on the final, along with a perfect score on HW and Owl, and I got a B for the class.
Very easy class. Tests are mad easy. Go to class at least once before each test and your looking at least a B. He doesn't really know how to teach though so if you are the type of kid who needs to be walked trough school, well he isn't the right one for you. Overall really easy gen ed and also easy admissions to ISOM
Janis is a nice guy, wants you to do well and always helpful. Classes are usually boring, the book is boring, and the assignments are confusing/boring. Exams are more difficult than they should be but no one does well so the scale is generous. This class is fine if you don't mind learning absolutely nothing to get an ok grade.
Don't bother going to lecture, he uses a tablet PC and sribbles all over his vague and worthless slides. He explains things like we are children and loses the point. Avoid him if you want to learn. If you just need a gen-ed, take his class and only go to discussions with your TA...he never gave a quiz in lecture, just threatened it.
He is extremely scatter-brained but you can tell that he cares that we actually understand the material. He tries sometimes to make the material seem more relevant which can be cool. He's a little wacky though and often not very clear. And he's not even funny. but the grading on the tests is pretty fair.
Do not take any classes with Janis. He's one of the worst professors that I've ever had. He spends all of the class time on useless information and he doesn't teach any material that is on the test.
Janis is boring and kind of a geeky economics teacher (more than usual). Spent most of lecture talking about newspaper clippings. He makes lots of graphs for things that don't need them. TA was very confusing (Didn't speak english well at all) Overall wasn't that bad. Didn't use half of the books that I bought - kind of a waste!
I didn't think he was as bad as what others were saying but not great. Not very organized and didn't touch on everything that appeared on tests. Still if you do all the owls and extra credit and understand everything on the study guides you should be able to get an A.
Janis is the worst teacher I have had so far at UMass. He does not teach the material and shows useless graphs and statistics in class instead of teaching what is on the exams. Also, his grading does not make sense; he originally tells you it is out of a certain number of points, then changes it frequently and takes out questions- very confusing.
I went to maybe 5 classes out of the whole semester. I got a 98 in the class tho because I read the book and went to my discussion. If you have Jen Cohen as a TA you are going to do very well. She was awesome. Russel justs confuses people.
i THOUGHT he was a good teacher first couple days..then i realized he spent over 90% of class talking abt news so i slept thru EVERY CLASS. Notes DO NOT HELP so dont bother taking any..get a good TA. hard class..if you dont know anything. try to get someone better if you can. i wouldnt take him again. stresses me out! or maybe econ js sucks overall
Very difficult to understand, however he truly does care about the success of his students and will work with you if you need extra help. He also gives you a review sheet and an old exam before each test... if you study you will get an A.
His only problem is that he wastes too much precious time on "logistical crap" and news clippings. Go to lecture to learn the computational stuff but use the book for concepts. Get a good TA (mine was Jen) to know what's exactly on the exams. The short answer questions will be obvious but the multiple-choice seemed to kill a lot of exam grades.
Not the best of teachers--spends most class time talking about current events that relate to economics but they confused me more. But if you study and go to his office hours it isn't that bad.
Worst teacher ever. Not clear at all during class. The graphs he drew were disorganized and didn't make sense. Most of the discussion classes are helpful so go to those if you want to pass the class.
Professor Janis' class was the bane of my existence. At no point in his incoherant rambling could I gain any idea of what he was talking about. Avoid this class like the plague or else it will plague your dreams for eternity. I am not be overly dramatic either.
bad!!!!
Yes, it is true that Janis is alittle unclear at times, but I still learned a lot from lectures and the book. The class wasn't very hard at all (econ 103 was my first econ class too), and after class I would ask him questions I had and he answered them willingly and with clarity. Read and attend lectures and you'll do good!!!
great guy...very clear and helpful...totally would suggest taking 331 Organization of American Industry
To be honest, I have been to lecture twice for this class and am doing very well. The weekly discussions are thorough enough and the online assignments help as well. If you are looking for a class that you don't have to go to, with few exams, and online HW assignments (which actually brought my grade up) then take this class!
If you skim the book before class then everything he says is perfectly clear. You can't always do this so you may not be able to follow his lecture slides but take good notes and after you read the chapter you can go back and everything makes sense. If you are super lazy and unmotivated you probably won't do well in college or Janis class.
By far WORST class i have taken at UMASS. Rus doesn't teach but just incoherently rants on in lecture, making it useless to go. Tests are extreemly hard, and worded funny. He has a strange grading system meaning you won't know how your doing untill your final grade come out. Review session are equally useless
I wanted so badly to enjoy this course more. The assignments were fun and interesting. My TA was great. The professor is personable and helpful. The problem is the lectures. He isn't very engaging with a large audience, and it's difficult to follow his line of thought.
Despite my ideological repulsion to neoclassical theory, I tried to learn all I could from this class but thid professor, I can truly say is KILLING MY INTEREST IN ECONOMICS. The topics covered in this class aren't uninteresting but his lecture style does nothing to inspire writing about economics but seeks regurgitation in his assignments.
i think his a very good professor just gotta followup on ur work and his relatively understanding but does rant occasionally
Lectures are boring and usually Janis gets off-topic, making the text and the online quizzes your best tools. Material is standard economic theory. Read the book, do the quizzes, and go to discussion and this class is a breeze.
He's a funny guy sometimes and does his best to make the subject of Economics as interesting as it can be. If you attend class most of the time and do the readings, this class will be very easy.
Honestly, this was one of the worst classes that I've taken so far at College. I enjoy Economics, but Janis made the class very boring and hard to follow. The Homework assignments were not pertinent at all to what he went over in class. Take this class with him if you must, but he is very unclear in his teaching of the course.
This class/professor was absolutely awful. The material was hard and all he did was ramble. I studied for hours on the tests and they were still extremely hard. His lectures were awful and I couldn't understand what he was saying most of the time, and the slides he put up didn't make sense either. Don't take a class with him!!
Most of the time he's trying to explain things to himself before he's able to explain it to the class during lecture. Diaster. Posts class notes on SPARK, but they're illegible. Don't go to class, DO read the textbook and go to office hrs w/TAs and make sure you understand conceptually. HW is easy, but don't help with concepts on test. Many quizzes
I quite liked Rus Janis. He is a little scatter-brained at times and his hand-writing is messy, but he means well. He makes a lot of econ jokes, which, if you don't like econ, you won't appreciate. If you don't understand something, I highly recommend going to his office hours. He was always more than happy to help.
You are basically going to learn everything in discussion... You will fall asleep in class and not be able to read his handwriting.
Prob one of the worst teachers I've ever had. Talks about economics, but rarely gives any lectures about the economic theory you need to know. Skip lectures, but read the book and go to discussions. Your TA's will be the only ones who will really teach you about Economics
He seems like a nice guy but I honestly can't focus on what he's saying for more than 2 minutes. Lectures aren't necessary just read & know the chapters. Discussion WILL help (so long as your TA speaks english), its the only way I learned anything besides from the book.
One of the worst professors I have had. He certainly knows economics well enough, but cannot teach it at all. Janis thinks he is in the political science department and tries to apply politics and personal views to economics far too extremely. The only good thing is I had a good TA in this class. You learn nothing in lecture 90% of the time.
I had Janis for Economics 103 and 104. He's ok, lectures are dull and the textbook is really not that important. He likes to go on random tangents during class. His exams aren't hard nor easy but his homeworks are a breeze.
Terrible professor, totally irrelevant rants during lectures. Spent 20 mins of one lecture talking about plagiarism. Go to discussions and read textbook to actually learn, dont go to lecture. Online quizzes are annoying, does not communicate due date well.
Janis is a wicked nice guy, but the material is terrible and his lectures arent good. all his slides are tables/graphs,which makes it really hard to take notes on a laptop, and theres nothing to write down-making it really hard to study. Janis cares about how youre doing in the class, but his lectures arent good.
Went to class maybe twice, fell asleep both times and learned nothing, worst class
Worst professor/teacher I have ever had in my entire life. Completely useless class and he never teaches. Janis gives the hardest homeworks and just expects you to know all of the material. I was forced to learn ALL of the material on my own. I highly recommend finding a new professor immediately.
Worst teacher I've had so far in my college career. You're better off not going to class and teaching yourself everything from the book. The online homework is so difficult, and he makes you do it before we even go over it in lecture. The tests were too confusing. I enjoy economics but I would've definitely taken this class with a different teacher
worst professor ive ever had. never taking another class with him again
Janis has stated in the beginning that this course is clearly introductory and we don't need to be a genius to understand econ. However, I have gone to every lecture, done every assignment (online and written), I go to discussion, and I am hardly passing. I have never struggled with a course as much as this one. He really is not a good professor.
Excellent professor. I had him for 397LE (Law and Economics). One of the most informative classes I've ever taken and if you attend his classes and talk to him he will help you through. There are no free points so don't expect an easy ride but the reward at the end is a really good understanding of the course material. Great professor and class
One of the best classes I have ever taken. Prof. Cares about his students as long as you show interest and are willing to do the work. Prof is fair, and gives many situations to help student nderstand subj matter. Would def. recommend him
2/3 of the class barely showed up. if you do the hw and attend discussion, it will help you. his lectures are honestly bull. have to read and learn from book. easy tests. he scales them most the time
If your taking econ 103 with him...Good luck. Unless you have taken econ before then your probably screwed. The discussions are the only way to learn.
I took ECON103 with this professor and I found it difficult to learn with him teaching. He went too fast when explaining crucial points and was scatterbrained. His explanations on topics were quite awful. My TA was even worse and we didn't learn anything in discussion. If you take this course, be prepared to learn from the book, don't go to lecture
Does not teach the class at all. His class is the most boring class I have ever taken but I still managed to get a B which was the worst grade I have received so far.
His lectures were decent. He was very passionate about teaching. Every time I met him to ask questions, he was very happy to explain course material and teach me everything he could. He made efforts to make sure I understood material clearly and he explained everything very clearly.
Absolutely horrendous, didn't go to class after the first couple of weeks. I expected to actually learn something from my professors for paying $20,000 a year. TA's are a much better help. Read the text book and you should be alright.
I LOVED THIS CLASS. He is such a great teacher and is really passionate and cares about what he's teaching! He gets a little off topic during class, but just so we can apply the material outside of class. Going to lectures helps a lot and all the homework is online, except for a few assignments. I had no prior knowledge and LOVED THIS CLASS.
Professor Janis's lectures are great! He really makes sure to apply the material we're learning in real world scenarios, and covers material with clarity. Very interesting class!
Worst lectures I've ever had to sit through- 75% of students dont go after the first week. A really friendly guy (& helpful in office hours), but his lectures are useless. Learn from book. The tests aren't easy either because they're mostly open response but letter grading is fair. Just keep reading the book & doing Econportal and you will survive
Not a very good professor. I can tell that this guy is a genius and I can tell that he is very passionate about the subject, but what he goes over in lectures hardly covers the material in the textbook and you need to know it for the homework and tests. He attempts to relate what we learn to outside scenarios but gets too carried away.
Prof loves teaching. He uses techniques which make the class interesting and help you understand and remember the subject matter. I highly recommend Janis and never hesitate to ask him questions.
Lectures are awful. He does not explain things well and then misguides you on exams. I would not recommend him.
This class is incredibly easy, like so easy that it is actually kind of annoying. During lecture on the day of the midterm, he talked about articles in the Wall Street Journal rather than reviewing; this is a frequent thing with him. I stopped going to lecture after the midterm because it was a waste of time and I still easily managed to get an A.
A great professor who genuinely loves teaching. His lectures are pretty straight forwards and clear. The class is pretty easy. Nice guy in person.
Definitely not a professor I would recommend. He used to just read from his slides, and very often he would get into tangents that just ended up confusing us all. He clearly knows his stuff, but he's way too dry for my liking. Managed to get a B- just because I was familiar with the text. Try for a decent TA, might help with this course.
Lectures are very boring & he hardly focuses on what is taught in the book which makes it confusing because the exams are based on the book. I barely went to class because I was unable to follow what he was teaching. However, he gives a lot of feedback if you go to office hours.
Econ 103 is an introductory class, however Professor Janis does not treat it like one. He assumes knowledge is previously known and does not stay on topic or teach what is suppose to be taught. The only reason why I am passing is because I took Econ in high school and I am studying those notes.
I took econ in High school so I have an understanding of the knowledge. If you haven't taken econ don't take his class. Although he is very nice, and you never have to go to class (he begs you) he is an awful professor.
I know people go here to give negative reviews, that is the point of this page. You have to understand why I am giving him a bad review, its because he is terrible at teaching. Almost every class I spend with him he gets distracted and talks about his own ideas and subjects. He never teaches to the text and classes are a struggle. Avoid if possible
This professor just reads off his slides. The tests are worth the most and the material on those are just from the book. If you do need help you're supposed to magically know the answers to your questions, which defeats the point of asking for help. He is also very condescending and not above making you feel stupid.
Goes on way too many tangents during lecture. Doesn't talk about anything relevant. You could skip half of the lectures and still get an A
He basically reads off the power points and then posts them online, going to discussions is mandatory, depending on the ta you wont learn much there either. Your better off just reading the text book and teaching yourself. However he tell you the answers to the extra credit questions during class. so if you want extra credit on the test go to class
Janis talks forever about pointless thing that are hard to relate to the notes. He puts notes up online which is helpful. Don't take it after 3pm you will not go!
Lectures are conversational and casual. As long as you basically understand a few core concepts it is very easy and not much work
Slides are posted online but he explains it thoroughly in lecture and gives good examples so I would recommend going and the TAs really help your grade.
Avoid this professor. I took his class for my junior year writing requirement and I wish I had taken it with a different professor. His lectures are confusing and unorganized. He wastes more than half of the class with material that is irrelevant. His grading is unclear, and if you go to office hours he will only confuse you more.
attendance is part of your grade but you dont have to come. lecture slides are posted online and you can pass them just by studying the slides and going to class(dont even have to read the book!). class overall was pretty chill and wasnt very hard. would take again
Your whole grade is basically determined by 2 exams and one paper
Janis knows his stuff, but tends to go off on tangents about the government. Very repetitive. He posts his slides and as long as you skim through the chapter in the book you should be fine. Discussion sections are where you learn the most and things start to make sense. Never taken an econ class and the discussions helped me a lot.
My biggest regret about this class was buying the book for almost $200 (don't buy the book!) To get a B+ in this class, all I did was attend the weekly discussion, complete the homeworks (googled everything), did well on the 2 papers given all semester, and go to the practice exam review sessions. TAs were extremely unhelpful.... avoid this class
Prof Janis is a pretty good professor, and the class is a really easy A. If you read the textbook at all, study on your own, and go to lecture it would be really hard not to get an A. He is a very nice guy who is approachable in office hours, even if he is not an amazing or exciting lecturer.
Accessible office hours but belittling professor when you ask him questions on points of confusion. Was really disappointing to come to him with questions and be treated poorly. His intent doesn't seem to help students learn rather chastise those who don't understand the material he rattles off in class.
He posts all of the lecture slides online so I skipped lecture often and still got an A. Lectures get kind of boring, so if you don't pay attention/don't go, make sure you read the book. The discussions were helpful, material wasn't too hard. Over all not a bad class, just keep up with the weekly online homeworks which boost your grade.
THIS PROFESSOR IS SO UNREASONABLE! WILL DO ANYTHING TO PREVENT YOU FROM PASSING! SPENDS TOO MUCH TIME TALKING ABOUT NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS AND POLITICS (p.s. he is extremely biased). WILL OFTEN DIVERGE FROM TEXTBOOK, TOO MUCH H.W, TA'S DO NOT GRADE TESTS WELL ( TA's grade differently), STICKLER ON PLAGIARISM, even when cite and quote he will penalize
Tests were tough but he hooked us up with a 15 point extra credit assignment right at the end of the semester. Not hard to get an A because grading is not just based on tests.
Lectures aren't super exciting, but he's a genuinely nice guy. He tries to connect the material to the real world, which is good, but it takes up a lot of class time, so you have to use the textbook to teach yourself sometimes. A lot of homework, but I definitely needed it to understand the material.
Not a lot of homework, but assigns readings due weekly. Wastes a lot of lecture time talking about things not related to the course, and is pretty boring. However, he teaches economics well and has study guides and sample tests online before every test.
I showed up to one lecture all year. The class is a huge joke, just make sure you goto the review sessions and you should get an easy A or B.
Horrible teacher, even says how he makes his tests hard. If possible, take with another teacher
He is a nightmare. i wouldn't want anyone to take this class with him since he teaches the most easiest concepts but makes the tests really hard.
Lectures were pretty pointless as he talked about newspaper articles the whole time that weren't relevant. I skipped half of the lectures because he posts the slides online. Using the online textbook for homework helped a lot and the discussion was very helpful as well. The homework and extra credit assignments online helped to boost your grade.
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He rambles for the beginning half of class, complains that time is running out, and the speeds through the rest of his material. The way he lectures is so unclear and ramblely. It's hard to understand the point he is trying to get across and makes the class extremely bland. Avoid at all costs.
literally the worst class I have ever taken. spends class talking about how he was published in the NYT. rushes definitions at the end and gives you no time to type them up. discussions will save you so make sure you go. exams are insanely scaled and you definitely won't fail but you wont do well either. decent study guide, some appears on exam
Janis was pretty good from what I saw. His pre-recorded lectures were easy to digest, the mid-term exam was not very hard as long as you did the homework. I got sick the night before a homework was do and he was kind enough to let me submit it a few days late. 2/3 of the assignments each week didn't have a set date until we info from the TA.
Gave tons of homework. Lots of reading. Midterm and final were ok but the time given was pretty short.
Russell is such a sweetheart, but a tough grader since it's a higher level class, and he gives incredible feedback. I still got an A- with some bad homework grades. Just show him you're putting in the effort and he will help you succeed. I can't recommend him enough!
Not a great lecturer but clearly cares about the material. Online book was much more informative than lectures in general and homework was generally easy with lots of extra credit available. One easy paper and two somewhat difficult exams.
I will say this is probably the worst class I've taken this semester. Id go to the classes and have no clue what he's talking about. His notes sometimes don't even relate to the topic. He talked about pig farms and flooding for a whole class period. The only thing keeping me from possibly failing is the homework and extra credit. It's is also alot.
Professor Janis is a really nice and caring guy, but his teaching style isnt the best. He rambles during his lectures leaving me very confused and not understanding whats going on. Since this is an entry level course, I feel like it should've been easier and material should've been explain a lot better. Try to take the class with someone else.
one paper, two tests, and a quiz. Professor Janis really cares about his students and wants them to understand the concepts of Microeconomics.
Everyone on here complaining needs to suck it up and do the work. Yeah, reading the textbook and doing the online assignments is a lot, but if you actually do everything assigned you will be just fine. Such a nice guy, lectures are a little of topic but if you listen he hints at a lot of future exam/paper topics. You get out what you put in.
This professor is horrible and rude. He rambles the whole class then, assigns hw and gives you few words to respond and gives you a bad grade for not writing enough. He gives finals on things he never teaches you and gives the final a month before finals.
Prof was the hardest grader for no reason. The material in the exams were barley glossed over in class.
