This course is very much self-taught, but he is still engaged with every student and gives periodic rundowns of each student's grades and how to improve them. Very friendly, funny, quirky, and passionate about his field of study.
Very understanding and very organized. One of the best professors at UH in my opinion. He came from Harvard. His lectures are very well planned out and always asks if we have questions. Replies to emails very quickly. Very passionate about his field and always tries to assure we're on the right path and inspires us to keep working hard. TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. Larsen is awesome! He's super passionate about chemistry and about making sure his students are successful. His lectures are really easy to follow- he'll start with some tips, then cover the content, and end with more suggestions so students can be successful. Don't hesitate to ask questions, he answers emails pretty quickly, and take him!
Larsen was a good professor overall. I didnt attend any lectures, and made an A in the class. He posts practice problems and walks through them which taught me the material best. So watch his those videos! He goes through all scenarios and is very approachable. I would take again.
Dr. Larsen is a wonderful professor and goes above and beyond for his students. I took this course last semester with another professor and dropped the class, but the lecture experience this semester with Dr. Larsen was completely different. He truly cares about his students and posts videos on Blackboard of him working problems. Super awesome.
I am not a big fan of Chemistry, but professor Larsen made me understand it so clearly! He is one of the first professors I meet, that is so dedicated to teaching! His lectures are awesome, they are available online later, and he works out additional problems for every chapter. Work those out, as they will help you on CASA exams later!
Dr Larsen is a great professor. He does his best to help out his students and does care about their success. He teaches the material well and gives many resources for practice over it. Good guy
I dont even have to wait until the end of the semester to rate this gentleman. He is truly a caring professor that wants you to succeed. His tips, notes, and encouragement are some of the best Ive ever received. Take him if at all possible. You wont regret it.
He's one of the best professors I've ever taken. His lectures are great and you really learn chemistry unlike the other professors who teach general chem or honestly any other science class at UH. Take him, you won't regret it!
He definitely knows his material and is very smart. The problem is the method of teaching . Luckily, I took this chemistry in high school so I focused on remembering what I had previously learned . If youre someone whos never taken chemistry I would recommend taking someone else . He over complicates everything and dives into unnecessary depth
Professor Larsen is hands down one of the best professors I have had. He goes really in depth of all the questions and is big on the conceptual questions which helps out a lot with Chem 1331. His powerpoints are great- detailed and colorful. He also posts additional questions that he works out later. The tests are hard since they're departmental.
Dr. Larsen is an amazing professor. He made chemistry so easy to understand. He is very knowlegable, go to his lectures he explains things very well ! He honestly cares about his students. You can literally email him whenever and he will ALWAYS reply with helpful information. Truly, one of the best professors i've ever had.
Dr. Larsen is one of the best chemistry professors I have ever had. I took chem as a freshmen in 2016 and got a C. I retook it now since it was a pre-req for my graduate school, and I'm leaving chem with an A now. It takes effort, but he makes concepts as clear as he can.
I only had him for about a week but you could see that he was clearly passionate about chemistry. He has pace incentive quizzes which are designed you give you extra credit and help you stay on track. He's super understanding, replies SUPER fast to your emails. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND
UH Chem department is trash. But this dude is a needle in a haystack. I wouldn't recommend anyone else over him. My friends have other professors who won't even give any other resource other than a boring lecture. But this dude gives you everything you need. Take him or you would be unable to get an A
He's such an amazing professor!! He's so passionate and such a good teacher. He gives a lot of homework but it's not counted for much, it's only really there to help you learn. He gives a lot of resources to help you learn too! He records all his lectures and puts up all his power points and a bunch of practice assignments that aren't for a grade.
He's a great professor! He gives a bunch of small EC assignments which are really helpful for studying for the tests. He doesn't require you to have the textbook but it's helpful for studying for the tests. If you have to take Chemistry I HIGHLY recommend taking him.
Amazing professor. He makes everything comprehensive, you have absolutely no excuse not to understand in his class because he is so available for help and so caring; theres also an extensive catalog of resources he keeps for you. His lectures are a little superfluous and sometimes too much detail, but he records, you can go back and watch again.
He is one of the best chemistry professors we have and I STRONGLY recommend that you take him if you want to pass. Everyday he posts practice problems that helps a lot for the tests. He is very caring for his students and you can see how passionate he is about chemistry which makes it more enjoyable. However, you have to practice a lot to pass!
Larsen is an incredible professor. He's very passionate about chemistry and gets excited about what he teaches easily, and he explains everything effectively. He's encouraging and very clearly cares about his students. He offers some extra credit and makes sure you have all the resources you need to pass. One of the best profs for Chem!
SO THIS COURSE IS TEST HEAVY NO MATTER THE PROF FOR CHEM 1331 THE MIDTERMS ARE WORTH 60 AND THE FINAL IS WORTH 34 HW WORTH 6, BUT HONESTLY THIS PROF IS GOOD HE OFFERS EXTRA CREDIT AND MY ADVICE JUST DO AS MANY QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE WHETHER IT BE ON BLACKBOARD OR TOM TEETS VIDEO JUST REVIEW LOTS OF QUESTIONS FOR THE EXAMS. N YEA DATS IT GOO LUK!!
Dr. Larsen was an amazing professor. He cared so much about his students and did a lot of extra work to help out others. Dr. Larsen puts a lot of effort into his lectures and preparation for exams. He gives as much as he can into his notes and reviews and his lectures are definitely worth going and much better than a majority of other professors.
He's a great professor and is always willing to answer any questions as best as he can. The way he explains things though is more complicated than it needs to be and chemistry department in general sucks because our grades are calculated 94% exams and 6% homework. He offers 2 points of extra credit to add to your grade with quizzes everyday.
Boi, this dude is dope af. I bet you would regret taking any other Chem professor at UH. Also a pro tip: Practice more than you can because Chem is hard.
Great, caring professor. Provides daily quizzes that count as extra credit at the end of the semester (up to 2 points) and helps clarify the information from lecture. Attendance is not counted and he records his lectures, but showing up really helps. Be sure to study hard even if you're in his class because chemistry at UH is difficult.
Larsen is going to be your solid choice. He cares about your performance and your knowledge of the subject. What is horrible about the course (not up to Larsen; departmental) is that 94% of your final grade is based off of tests. Each test is 20 randomized questions. Meaning that one person may get easier/harder Qs. Make sure to study from day 1!!
Dr. Larsen is an amazing professor. Personally, he is one of my favorite professors at the university and does whatever he can to help each of his students. Though the class is somewhat difficult, you will do good as long as you make sure to study. Textbook is not required, but it can prove to be helpful to some.
Professor Larsen is a real homie. His lecture would 90% of the time make sense and if I did have a question about anything Larsen would answer (guaranteed) less than an hour or two. Attending his office hours also helps a LOT since he goes into detail and tries to understand what your struggles are in the class. One of the best professors at UH.
Larsen is an amazing chemist however it doesn't come across that way in his teaching. I hadn't taken an advanced chemistry course and this class knocked me right out. Chemistry is hard but his explanations only further confused me. He is a great person to learn under if you know chemistry but I wouldn't advise him if you dont understand it already.
Professor Larsen is THE best prof in the chem department Don't take anyone else or the class will be more challenging than it already is. He is still not the best prof by himself, but he's better. Larsen can't teach that well and overcomplicated everything. I had to learn everything on my own and it was my most challenging class.
Chemistry is a difficult class to begin with but Larsen will try his best to offer resources that can assist you. I definitely recommend going to LAUNCH for extra help too.
He isn't the worst professor but he over explains a lot of the material that isn't really needed for the exams and he doesn't do nearly enough practice problems in class. Relies heavily on you learning through the HW and PIQ's which are a waste of time because there are sooo many but you can only earn 2 points extra credit.
Dr. Larsen is a good choice when compared to the abysmal quality the gen chem dept has to provide. Dr. Larsen most of the time is straight-forward but there were times when he ramble on forever and I would look at my old AP chem notes that were more clear. During covid-19 he was useless as he just uploaded old videos and wouldn't resposnd to email
whether a fair shot for an A is in front of you is what matters, he went back on his word when he didn't distribute a curve that many were counting on. and he relied on the technicality of his wording to justify his action in doing so. He seems more enthralled in his position as a professor than a teacher of chemistry or fairness. bad guy& bad prof
Larsen's a super nice guy, best chem professor by far, chem will still be difficult, but when it comes to options this guy's your best bet, he cares about his students and is fun and lively when it comes to lectures, he's passionate about what he does and puts in the work to make sure you succeed!!
Lectures arent very helpful. Its basically a self-taught class, so prepare for learning the topics on your own or get a tutor. He was more helpful through email because he was straight forward on there unlike in lectures.
Chem at UH in general is really bad but Larsen stands alone among the CHEM1331 teachers. Auto signup for him when you get the chance, the rest will make chem torture in comparison. He is very cheery and always sounds excited to teach and very fast to respond. There are no downs to taking him so DO IT. Hw is only 6% of grade and the rest are 4 exams
Prof Larsen is a very nice guy and TEACHES VERY WELL; provides blank notes to fill which at least for me works very well; reachable outside class. The class is very hard because the Chem Dept at UH, all teachers are bound to follow the same rules. Extra credit provided, amount of hmk and hmk/Exams format are determined by the dept not the teacher.
Professor Larsen was always available to answer any questions I had regarding the material or hw. He takes time to explain difficult concepts during lectures to make sure we're understanding the material. The tests are pretty hard but if you do ALL the hw attempts, practice hw, and practice tests, you'll be fine bc some questions are repeated.
I took both 1331 and 1332 with Larsen (1332 Spring 20), I would not have understood chemistry without him. He provides every possible resource he can and for some may go into excessive detail, but he wants to make sure you understand the mechanisms deeply enough to go far in chem. Extremely caring, he does not deserve the bad reviews.
Even though he is a great professor and has good lectures, what you learn in class is not enough. His math practice is good for answering questions but all of the conceptual stuff is hard to just learn from lectures. Best advice is to practice do all PIQ and Hws because its just a big question bank so it will reappear on exams. DO ALL ATTEMPTS
I loved Professor Larsen. He really cares about his students, and is a really sweet dude. He created extra problems and reviews, even though it took a lot of time out of his day, and it really prepared me for the exams. I managed to get an A in the class mainly from watching his lectures and going to the workshop, so I recommend doing that.
russell gene larsen is one amazing man! he's a super nice and funny guy and his lectures are semi-enjoyable because of that, but unfortunately, nothing can fix the sharthole that is the chem department at UH. this class is SUPER test heavy (like 94% of your overall grade is based on your test grades) but larsen is the only thing that got me thru it
Prof Larsen is your best choice for this class but the Chemistry department in general at UH is terrible. The exams are 94% of your total grade (3 midterms worth 20% each, final worth 34%) & the homework are 6%. He does give an opportunity to get 2 points added to your final grade. The grading for this class is still harsh and there are no curves
I will say this. If you got scared off after chem 1, dont worry too much, chem 2 is a bit better (in my exp). Ik some people say chem here isnt the greatest, and I do agree, Larsen was a good choice. Tho the curriculum and class structure still isnt great imo, the material and Larsens lectures made it a bit easier to grasp. Nice guy
Dr. Larsen is probably the best general chemistry professor you're gonna get at UH. Unfortunately, due to problems of COVID and the Texas freeze, I failed his class. But it was not due to him, it was due to external factors out of my control. I am upset that I cannot retake the class with him this summer. Do the PiQ quizzes he provides, they help!
Dr. Larsen is definitely one of the professors I would give a perfect 5/5, because he's a very nice gentlemen and understands that we struggle so he gives us multiple opportunities at certain assignments. Though the grades do not reflect that, he's the one for your chemistry classes.
94% out of the grade is exams, so be prepared. He is okay in lecturing, but you can get lost to know what he is looking for know the exam. HW only 6%, and there are extra credit quizzes (4 every week). If you do all, u get 2% extra.
Great Professor, one of the best for chemistry. Though a great professor doesn't always mean the class is easy. Personally, this class was difficult, definitely do the extra credit, practice a lot, go to every lecture, and tutoring if needed. Amazing professor, hard material. He answers questions in class and is pretty good at responding to emails.
Prof. Larsen is one of the best chem professors at UH. The class is still hard though! Make sure to do the extra credit because it is super useful in the end. The textbook helps to fully understand certain concepts that you may not grasp in lecture. I hadn't taken Chemistry since sophomore year of high school, yet his class helped me a lot
Wow! Dr. Larsen is great. He should be an example to all in the Chemistry department of how to conduct yourself and your class. He is very clear and understandable. You can ask his for help and he will do his best to help you understand. As UH Chem policy.. all sections have same exams . He is your best shot at doing good on them. Good luck!
Best Chem professor in UH
Professor Larsen is one of the best NSM professors in my experience. He truly cares about his students and is very accessible outside class. The PiQs, homework, and practice exams help understand the material. This class is mostly the conceptual part of chemistry, but he explains the topics concisely and thoroughly.
Professor Larsen is one of the best professors in the NSM department. He teaches the content thoroughly, which gives a better understanding of the "big picture." One downside about Professor Larsen for this class is that he likes to delve deep into the concepts when most of the homework and test questions are mostly math-based.
I struggled with the material of the class, but I would say that Larsen is still a pretty good professor. Some topics were harder to get a grasp on, but if you read the material before lecture it would help more. He's extremely understanding and helpful when reaching out for help. The course itself is hard so be prepared for that.
Professor Larsen is awesome. He has a clear passion for what he is teaching.
Very good professor. In person attendance is not mandatory, but you must keep up with the lectures and material. He posts so much online to help students succeed: powerpoints and videos of lectures, short videos on how to do the specific types of questions in the homework, and plenty of ungraded practice opportunities. I'd take him again.
Attendance was optional and the lecture recordings are posted on MS teams. It was very easy to follow along. 4 Participation quizzes a week add up at the end of the year for extra credit. Really helped stay on track. Homework due on sundays. Lots of resources for practice questions and extra notes from the textbook or txtbk "slide notes"
The best chem professor. Lectures are amazing and have exactly what you need to complete hw. Exams are very similar to hws and final is very similar to midterms. Youll have to put your effort into learning but he is very easy to follow and available for any question. Would absolutely take again
Way too much for one class. PIQs are due practically every day of the week for a measly two points. His lectures were difficult to follow and trying to join in through MS teams was worse. No good online set up to accommodate the mass amount of students. Watch Tom Teets on youtube to learn.
Professor Larsen is one of the best chemistry professors there is. All though im not great at chemistry, he made it understandable. He cares about his students and he cares about chemistry. His lectures are really good, so try not to miss it even though its not mandatory to attend. He does in person and online lecture for the class.
Larsen's most useful resource is his hw walk throughs that he posts on teams, take advantage of that. He livestreams his lectures and even posts them afterwards. Also offers up to 2 ec points towards your semester grade, which seems like nothing but it matters a lot in a class where each point on an exam counts towards your overall grade.
Although the chemistry department isn't that great at UH, Larsen is awesome when it comes to teaching chemistry. He is easy to understand when he explains conceptual things. He also assigns 4 mini quizzes and a HW per week about what was taught in lecture for the week, which helps in preparation for understanding and studying for exams.
Dr Larsen is absolutely excellent. His lectures come straight out of the textbook so anything he lectures you need to know on the exam. His class is 6% hw and 94% exams (20 per midterm 34 for final) with the opportunity of 2 bonus points added to your final grade via extra credit quizzes (which are a great learning tool) that are given.
Professor Larsen is by far one of the best Chem professors UH has to offer. He offers extra credit, assigns one HW due at the end of the week, and provides a variety of practice exams to prepare you for the test. Test are kinda scary since they make up 94% of your grade but that's the same for any Chem 2 class at UH.
chem is a difficult subject already but larsen didn't make it any better. he teaches as if i already know the material and although he's super energetic he's still not a good teacher to me. his homework takes up a good amount of time and the exams are worth 94% of ur grade alone. mess up and it's hard to come back up. chem IS HARD!
Gave good lectures but doesn't work many problems out. 4 weekly quizzes reviewing topics in lecture, counted for extra credit, very good way to study. Each test question is worth a point of your final grade. Homework is the best way to practice for the test, don't do it, you will fail. Grade scale is set at the beginning of the semester, no curve
Professor Larsen brings a positive energy in class and inspires students a lot. There are 4 short quizzes every week that count towards extra credit, but they really help you with keeping up with the material learned in class that week as chem can get overwhelming if you were to cram it all at once. Many resources to practice the concepts.
The Professor himself is very nice however he cannot teach well, I actually started doing better in class by just doing the online exercises and reading the textbook. He does provide adequate test reviews 82% of your grade is based on exams, it saddens and disappoints me that this is the best the UH chem department has to offer.
Larsen is an amazing professor, but he mainly focuses on the conceptual aspect of the material. The best way to prepare for each exam is to take the practice exams that he provides in addition to the practice problems he posts on canvas. At UH, chemistry is a class that is mostly self-taught, so don't just rely on the professor to get a good grade.
one of the best out of the chem 1311 profs. he is super excited to teach and eager to answer questions. expect one untimed online hw assignment (~10-15 qs) and one timed online quiz (~5-10 qs) per week. exams are difficult but he posts several practice problems, tests, and review materials to help you prepare. will rephrase concepts if you need it.
The best professor for Chem at UH. His lectures are clear and he livestreams them and records them for you to be able to assess later. You can tell he is passionate about what he teaches and he is just overall such a sweet and wholesome person. This class is difficult, but as long as you do the homework and practice tests, you should be fine.
Dr. Larsen is great, Honestly the only reason I got a C+ was because I was fooling around and focused on the wrong classes. Chems a hard subject but Dr. Larsen will definitely explain it better than anyone else at UH. Just pay attention. When you show up take notes on an ipad or notebook and go through your notes every day to recall what you leaned
Good person but does not know how to teach at all. He focuses on the wrong parts for exam. They are random question bank so you can get very unlucky. you could literally skip all lectures and watch yt or read the textbook and still get a better grade than people who attend his lecture. just watch tom teets, organic chemistry tutor and read txtbook.
Larsen is very charismatic and good at teaching chemistry, if you pay attention and try you should be fine. He was always accessible outside of class and he records his lectures which is convenient.
larsen is a good person but teaching wise not really. he talks a lot about the overall concepts in chemistry but then just starts dozing off on a tangent. he records his lectures for online so that's good however, utilizing the homework and quizzes will be your best bet in doing well. in office hours he is very sweet and will accomodate issues/q's
He is very passionate about Chemistry (I wish all professors were like that). However, he tells us a lot of stuff that we don't need to know and his teaching style makes it harder to grasp concepts that would otherwise be easy to understand. The good thing is, his lectures are recorded so you can pause to understand what he's talking about.
Larsen the best out of the other chem profs but I still found him hard to learn from. I wish he did more practice problems, he mostly explains concepts. He isn't lenient with grading; I got an exam question wrong for putting in '11.0' when the answer key said '10.96378...' and he said that the answer had to be within +/-0.02... no partial credit.
Dr. Larsen has to be one of the best science professors at UH. Gen chem is just always going to require great effort and practice, but Dr. Larsen is an incredible guide for his students. Straightforward lectures, supplemental material, & tells us what we need to know for exams. Accessible & WONDERFUL in his office hours. 100% take him for chem.
Maybe it's because chemistry is a very easy subject to me, but I found Larsen amazing and the class very easy. He does focus a lot more on the conceptual portion of the course than the math part, which might be a problem for some. Definitely the best Chem 1311 professor though, with the extra credit he offers and no pop quizzes.
Dr. Larsen's lecture were mostly focused on the conceptual part of the course and a lot of the times I would practice outside of class on the math part. He would also post extra help/reviews before exam time in order to feel extra prepared for the upcoming exam. Overall make sure you don't fall behind in this class.
His PowerPoint slides are all over the place. Whatever he teaches in lecture is never on the exams so learning in class is a waste of time. The only way to go good on the exams is by practicing old exams or practicing problems from the review. Chem is already very hard and he makes it even more difficult to learn.
I don't like the way he teaches at all. Too much beating around the bush and randomly hops from math to conceptual topics and is very all over the place. I think you'd be better off with just watching youtube for every topic.
I honestly don't recommend that you take him for chem 1 or 2. His lecture material is all over the place. It's so hard to understand what he is teaching. Taking the workshop was helpful and it's the only reason why I passed this class. Do practice exam before every exam because it helps.
Larson is an energetic and tech Savy man who is probably the best professor in the chem department. You won't have to waste time worrying about the textbook because his recorded lectures are very good and designed to make you very knowledgeable. I felt chem 2 practice tests are also very similar to the tests and are doable if you study properly.
3 exams and 1 final exam at CASA, 1 quiz and 1 hwk due every week. He was a very passionate and upbeat prof, but it was hard to pay attention and actually understand in his class. If you do all the extra credit, homework, practice exams, watch YouTube videos (Khan Academy, The OChem Tutor, etc.) then the class will be chill. Best chem prof at UH
Professor Larsen has an infectious enthusiasm for chemistry, and it comes through in his lectures and his passion for teaching. He genuinely cares about you and your success and does what he can to make sure you're on track. The subject matter isn't easy, but if you go to lecture, ask questions, and stay ahead of the assignments, you'll succeed.
Very enthusiastic chem professor and answered emails promptly. Offered 2 extra credit points that applied to your final grade. Livestreamed and recorded his lectures. Whichever prof you take for chem, you'll still need to self-study! Larsen's slides were sometimes messy, but if you read the txtbook and put in effort, you're guaranteed to make an A!
Chill professor but very conceptual in his lectures and hard to grasp what he's really trying to teach. Weekly homeworks and quizzes with total of 4 exams, 3 midterms and 1 final.
Dr. Larsen is great! If you attend his office hours, which for me was right after class Mon & Fri, he is very helpful. He would sometime give great feedback which I needed at times. This class was also very accessible to me after class and one thing I will say is definitely practice and understand the material.
Yall he does online livestreams of his lectures and posts recordings. For everyone worried abt traffic he is a life saver. After the halfway mark I started slaking off big time, didnt watch vids, barely did homework, and totally guessed on the third test. That with that fact that I didnt study for the final, I am still satisfied with my grade.
Tbh I think I went to maybe two lectures but his extra credit points were amazing(brought me from a B+ to A) what helped me was going to prof chen's review sessions, Taking the SEP and studying practice tests/old exams. study really hard for the exams and know the concept!! do like 250 practice questions in the form of the practice exam! take him!
I loved that in his class attendance wasn't mandatory. It was very flexible for me despite being an in-person class. I passed the class with an A. I would say that you have to understand the concepts and topics to pass the exams. The practice exams are very important and also his ppts are also very helpful. I suggest going to office hours.
Overall super good professor, the lectures are very textbook heavy but he will still go over some example equations. He uses real world examples so it's easier to understand the concepts. Also crambetter is a good outside source to use for practice exams and extra videos
