Russell Larson is totally sweet. He'll pretty much walk you through your experiment. He might as well do it for you.
Professor Larsen is great. He is nice and willing to help if you need it.
very awesome he is so nice and ready to help and very genuine with wanting to help he goes out of his way to do so and understands that kids can mess up in lab he makes this very clear and isnt boring either if you can get him for anything do it cause hes one of the best professors ive ever had
I was not a fan of larsen at all. i felt like the whole time he was trying to talk over your head. he made things sooo much more complicated than they had to be. plus, i think he was bitter about only getting 3 questions on the tests because his would anal****you every time.
Dr. Russell is such an intelligent and caring man. He is willing to help you if you do not understand anything that has to do with Chem 1, just make sure you seek out his help. He's an awesome person!

Larson is a sweetheart, he really does care and seems to be interested in your questions. I would just talk to him after case study...I wish he taught other classes, he makes sure everyone understands before moving on to the next part of the topic-great prof.!
He's so nice and is able to articulate really clearly. He really does a great job starting from basic examples, making sure you understand them before going on to more complicated theories. A very sweet, nice man :)
case study is the let down of chem I, although easy, the level of comedy attained by hansen/eyman simply cannot be matched by larsen. however, larsen is one of the smartest men alive. check out his resume. dude went to berkeley. kind of hard because difficult concepts are his common sense.
Larsen is the smartest man in the chem department. He is really interested in students succeding in this course.
He's really nice and brings things back to the basics very well. He will call on you during class, but will help you through everything. Maybe my fav teacher for Chem thus far
He's a great prof, really nice and alway willing to help. The concepts in Chem I are difficult, but he tries his best to help everyone understand. Great man and teacher.
Case Study was the best part of chem I.
Doesnt explain very well in Lecture
Best lecturer and Case Study Prof. in Principles II. Tough course, but he teaches it pretty well.
Fantastic professor.
I do not like him. He is super BORING!!!! Makes me fall asleep.
He is an excellent professor, who truly cares about his students learning the material; and he can explain it in a way that is clear. I appreciated his examples and practice problems given during lecture, which helped me personally recognize what concepts I knew and I what I needed a better explanation on. I would highly recommend him.
Dr. Larsen is so nice. Sometimes he misplaces his laser but thats ok cuz hes such a sweetie.
He's really nice and if you come to his office hours he is always willing to help you. I found his lectures to be a little confusing at times but I think he's a pretty good professor.
He is a really sweet guy. He does really cool experiments in front of the class however sometimes I find it hard to relate them to what we're learning. You can easily skip lectures and still get an A on the tests if you read the book.
Very nice guy, homework definitely helps with the exams. Participation for discussions is all important.
Awesome Guy, Hes always helpful and there if you ask for help.
One half of a terrific Larsen duo! He is by far the best Prof. I've had yet- meticulously clear in his explanations and an all around nice guy. If you can take PrinChem2 with him, by all means, do so! His and his wife, Sarah Larsen are both Harvard grads and helpful, kind instructors. Had no need to go to office hours.
very nice guy~~ extremely funny when perform a experiment
Perfect freshman professor. Super nice, super helpful, super great.
Nice guy but as far as the class goes if there really is no need to go to the lectures. Just read the book and pay attention during discussion and the tests will be fine. Nice curves are given on the tests as well.
Dr. Larsen is very nice and is knowledgeable on his subject. However, his lectures can be confusing, and I found the textbook to be more beneficial. To get the most out of lectures, it would be best to read the chapters first.
Always telling funny jokes, did several experiments in class. Very fun guy.
I have had 6 professors from the chemistry department and Larsen is by FAR the best one. He really enjoys teaching and makes it super easy for everyone to relate to the topics he teaches. If you have a chance to take a chemistry course with him do it!
More than just a great professor: I was stuck out-of-state during a snow-storm, and he worked with me personally once I returned back to campus.
I switched teachers around until attending Dr Larson's lecture, he's by far the best chem teacher. You can tell he's passionate about chemistry and eager to teach.
Very enthusiastic. Explains material well. Tends to move through material quickly. Teaches the subject well. Not that bad to look at. ;)
Dr. Larsen is the best chemistry teacher I've ever had. His lectures are focused on the main ideas so you can grasp the basics. He is very approachable if you have a question and always willing to help. Studying the chapter review questions and homework are the best way to prepare for tests. Discussion is only worth going to for the points.
Best chem professor I've ever had. Great at explaining things and really funny during class. I recommend taking a class with him if you have the chance.
GREAT professor. He is soooooo helpful and explains things in a great way. Content is very difficult, but he presents everything you need to know. Must study to get a good grade in this class. Heavy text-book use.
Extremely helpful, very entertaining. Ask for practice exams, they are the key to getting a good grade. Not very hard of a class if you put in the work! One of the best professors I have ever had.
He is so nice !He makes me familiar with chemistry although this is the first time that I learnt in .
He is a awesome professor, very knowledge and very nice! His lecture is very clear and very easy understand! You should definitely enroll his class if you need to take chemistry !!!
the best
Very excited to teach, great explinations. He was the only remotely exciting part of the class, definitly reccomend
Good energy
he is very helpful and thorough at explaining concepts. always open to questions
The most interesting chemistry professor out there. Great energy. You can tell he loves to teach.
One of my favorite professors so far! Very helpful and easy to understand.
Best teacher I have. First of all he is hilarious, which makes chem 1000x more interesting and second he is great at "dumbing" things down. Read the textbook before class, because any questions you had will most likely be covered in his lecture
I have nothing against professor Larsen. He seems to be an awesome teacher, just not for me. I didn't go to lecture often because I would end up on my phone and teaching it to myself later that night. Everybody else loves him, however. I guess it's your preferred way of learning.
Best professor I've had so far, hands down. Super easy to understand and really funny and helpful.
My favorite professor so far! Funny, energetic, non-intimadating, and explained things in easy-to-understand language. Super helpful and always responds thoroughly to emails.
He is a great lecturer. Really easy to follow and wants you to succeed. He is really passionate about what he does.
Very Good in case study. Best part of Principles.
Professor Larsen is a great teacher! Going to lecture is really helpful, he goes through examples and wants to make sure that we all understand him. He is always available for office hours, and loves to help students!
He is the best Chemistry professor for Gen Chemistry that U of I has, but still pretty hard. I recommend him out of all professors but make sure you know every word in the book, from notes, and from MC.
Awesome pro i have met. Love him so much. Clear, helpful and humorous. Obviously he loves teaching and good at teaching. Looking forward to take his lecture again. But the exam is a kind of difficult, he always holds a review section before test.
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME! Easy to understand and super sweet! He is the best!
He keeps things interesting.
Great professor that keeps subjects simple. He answers questions right on the spot. He's also very well spoken.
The best professor in chem of UI. So helpful and nice. I even can't find a exact word to say about him. Awesome teacher. You will be a lucky dog if you take his lecture. Like him so much.
He is an excellent teacher! He is very easy to understand and gets the material across in an easy to understand way.
I think his voice sounds pretty wired and he doesn't do any research. Although he likes to help students, it's still hard to make sense.
He was always very intriguing during class. Uses a lot of visuals for students to understand information more. He has a very bubbly personality that makes going to class enjoyable.
Larsen is so funny. He randomly cracks jokes and it keeps me paying attention during lectures. Its clear he loves teaching and chemistry. Best professor I have.
Great professor. General Chem 1 is difficult to teach well because there are so many concepts covered in such a small amount of time. Dr. Larsen obviously loves chemistry and his lectures are easy to listen to because he has so much energy. He also knows what's up, and jokes around sometimes. But he is a smart dude. Test are hard though.
He is a very approachable professor, ready to help whenever you need. Good lectures, he clearly enjoys teaching! Plus his lectures are pretty funny. Midterms are hard, study and read the book!!!
One of the greatest professors I've come across.
If you like Bill Nye, you will love Professor Larsen!
Dr. Larsen is honestly my favorite professor at Iowa! I have to take many more chemistry classes and I wish he could teach every single one. He loves chemistry and loves teaching. Enjoy him while you have him!
Dr. Larsen is a fantastic professor!! Definitely take his class if you can. He clearly loves to teach and is SUPER helpful during office hours. He also records the lectures and puts them on ICON, which is great if you ever have to miss a class. Read the book on your own and go to the lectures, because he clarifies a lot of stuff during the lecture.
Russell is an awesome guy. He is great in lecture, very enthusiastic about the material. I only went to his office hours twice and he was exceptional each time. If you are unsure about chemistry, try and take the course from him. Can't say enough good things about him!
Dr. Larsen is extremely helpful. It's a shame he doesn't present all of the lectures (other teachers split up the material and present). He's very clear when speaking if you know what he's talking about. Basically the reason I got the grade I did.
Clear
Awesome Chem teacher! He's VERY good at breaking down the material for you. Although this is a tough subject, he makes me excited to learn more!
Great at instructing & clarity. Also pretty funny and makes lecture interesting.
He goes out of his way to help you, whether you utilize what he offers is another thing. Not only does he want you to succeed but he wants to make lectures worth listening to which makes him such a good professor. If you have him, don't leave 10 minutes before the end of class like some people, chances are they are the ones that do the worst.
Larsen is an excellent professor. He really wants the best for his students. While it's easy to want to skip lecture when there's 400 others in your class, don't! Lecture is really important. He is such nice man and it motivates me to want to do better in his class. He's goofy and keeps lecture interesting.
Larsen is a GREAT professor. Did not really like chemistry in high school however he makes it so easy to understand and interesting. Larsen truly does care for the students and he wants everyone to do well and is more than willing to help outside of class. Take his class you will not be disappointed!
He explains everything so well that there is almost no need to read the textbook.
There is a bunch of homework, but if you study you will do well. There are also tons of opportunities for help.
Great professor who loves what he does! would suggest him to anyone!
The homework is online along with quizzes. The textbook is also online which is an awesome cost saver in college.
Cutest professor ever. He makes going to class worth it :)
Larsen is awesome! Always takes time to answer questions during lecture and helps you after if you need it. Definitely recommend!
Fantastic teacher. It has been 2 years since I took his class and I think he was one of the best professors of my science classes. Its a tough class but he explains things very well and is extremely helpful if you are confused or need help.
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER! TAKE EVERY CHEM CLASS POSSIBLE FROM LARSEN. YOU WILL LOVE HIM. NICEST/MOST HELPFUL PERSON ON PLANET EARTH NO JOKE HES LIKE A CHEMISTRY ANGEL SENT FROM GOD HIMSELF.
I loved Professor Larsen so much! He was so helpful throughout the course of the semester, and it was very apparent that he cared about student learning. He makes lecture fun and interesting with demonstrations, and has a very energetic teaching style. The class can be difficult if you don't work hard at it, I put in 5-7 hours a week and got an A!
Russell was a great professor. He always had great lectures and he genuinely cared about teaching chemistry. He always stated his expectations clearly and showed you how to succeed. Also he had a lot of great in class demonstrations. Overall he was an excellent professor and I would recommend him for anyone taking Gen. chem.
I switched into this course a few weeks late. Professor Larsen was very helpful and took the time to help me. If you have questions over anything at all regarding the content of the course or homework, go in and work with him. After struggling on my own for a while I went in for help on the third exam and he did wonders for me. Great human being!
Hilarious! Dr. Larsen made chemistry INCREDIBLY fun!
Great professor, cares about his students, and helps in anyway he can
He is a very good professor, and is very organized in lecture. He is very nice and helpful in office hours He does well explaining things at an easier level.
Honestly, he is a very good professor. Very nice and knows what hes talking about. The problem is, the material is just so boring and there is SO MUCH WORK TO DO. prepare to be doing hours upon hours of homework every week. the tests are crazy hard. You dont need to go to lectures though, theyre online recorded and he reads right off the slides
He is a very knowledgeable teacher. If you are prepared for class and have skimmed the material ahead of time, his class is a breeze! I liked him so much that I am taking another one of his classes this semester. He is super nice and friendly.
Such an amazing teacher!!
Explain very clear. Ready to help.
He was a great teacher and someone who was fun to listen to in lecture. The only downside to his teaching was that he wasn't the discussion leader. The discussion leaders didn't help me learn as much as professor larsen did
He is a god among men. We cannot even begin comprehend his energy level. He is like Goku on steroids.
One of the very best!
This professor is very very very awesome!!!! A great "chemistry lab trip" with he.
Russell Larsen is, easily, one of the best professors you will encounter at the University of Iowa. If you have an option to take a course taught by him, don't hesitate.
Professor Larsen is easily one of the most approachable and helpful professors on campus. If you attend class and office hours it is very difficult not to get a good grade.
He is awesome
I liked him
Larsen is one of my favorite professors on campus. His lectures are fun and makes understanding chemistry a whole lot easier. Lots of online homework but with chemistry, the more practice you get the better you will be at it. Big supporter of Dance Marathon too and donated to a bunch of kids accounts :) Would definitely take another class with him.
Larsen is the best general chemistry I teacher. He writes the tests so he teaches exactly what is on them and he will give you practice exams to help study for the tests.
Best professor at the University of Iowa HANDS DOWN. There is a lot of work to be done in his class, but he truly cares about students and their understanding of the material so if you're not getting something, seriously go to his office hours. He is so approachable and nice and you will not ever regret having him as a professor.
I LOVE RUSSELL LARSEN. Russell Larsen, aka the man of my dreams, is the greatest professor I have ever laid eyes upon. Chemistry is tough, but he makes sure you have a good handle on things and are prepared for the tests.
I loved Professor Larsen. He is so excited and passionate about what he teaches, and he is always doing extra work for the course. If you don't get the beginning concepts down, you won't end up doing very well in the course overall. Exams could be quite difficult, but I think that is mostly to try and keep a curve in the scores.
Russell Larsen is one of the best chemistry professors I have ever had! He is passionate about the topics and is always willing to help students out. The topics are difficult, but if you put in the effort, you have every resource to do well.
The best teacher I've had at Iowa. He really cares for his students and wants them to learn. He is always available for help and seems to WANT to be there. Emails back super fast and is very nice & professional. He's a quieter guy but very attentive one on one!
Dr. Larsen is the greatest. I mean I don't know how to explain how wonderful he is. He is very accessible outside his class. During his office hours he really explains what you don't understand into details and he doesn't move on until you understand. His lectures are incredible. I highly no, extremely recommend him to anyone.
He's a really great teacher. When he's giving his lecture, I can see his passion, profession, and how much he cares of his students. I really respect him.
This man is SUPER passionate and such a great professor. He definitely will work with you in office hours. If you show you care about the subject he will definitely work to help you succeed. This is a man that genuinely cares about students learning and made me enjoy a class I would normally hate
Although Mr Larsen seems like a wonderful, kind, person, tests are a huge weight on the test and he just doesn't give good essential information for many to succeed on them. Definitely a bummer for a lot of people.
Dr. Larsen is an amazing professor. He is not only unknowingly hilarious, but knows what he's talking about. Although GEN CHEM Is an easy enough class to pass without going to lectures, his lectures are worthwhile and will help you a lot. He is easily accessible and will do anything to help. I wish he would teach me in every chemistry class!
Dr. Larsen is by far my favorite professor at the University of Iowa. His lectures are easy to understand even if you don't read the book and you can tell he cares about the subject. He makes it fun and relatable and knows we have lives outside of his class.
Very good lecturer, great tools and examples to explain concepts. Fair sense of humor.
Russell Larsen is the best professor I have had. He is very clear in his lectures, and you can tell he has a passion for chemistry and teaching. He gives lots of homework, but as long as you pay close attention in lectures, read your textbook, and put time into the class you will get at least a B. He makes sure you actually learn the content.
Dr. Larsen was one of the best professors I've ever had! Really knows what he's talking about and is willing to help if you ask. Overall made Gen Chem a breeze.
Prof. Larsen is great and he makes going to class fun! Class definitely isn't mandatory because he posts every lecture online, along with the notes. The tests aren't too difficult, but you DEFINITELY need to study in order to do well. I'm not a science major and I'm doing fine in the course.
Prof Larsen seems nice during lecture, but he doesn't cover much in class that goes over the test( kinda pointless). I read the book to understand the material and without it I wouldn't do as well. His tests get more difficult as the time goes on and he makes them harder when people do well. Also, he stomps a lot.
Loved him, he's such a sweet guy too. He obviously knows what he's talking about and he understands his students' needs and helps them as best as he can. I would totally take a class from him again.
He has very entertaining and informative lectures that make it easier to learn the material. The discussion were good for asking questions, but no new material was learned in them. I will take another class with him if I get the chance. He is very good at what he does and makes funny dad jokes during class.
Such a sweet guy! Only complaint is he went WAY TOO fast to follow along in lecture if you're not that great at chemistry. Definitely suggest reading ahead of time so you have an idea of what lecture's about that day. Don't forget your ICON quizzes, actually try (don't chegg/course hero your mastering chemistry), and go to lecture. You'll be fine.
A great professor that really wants to see everyone succeed. Offers more than enough avenues for help and I didn't have a problem arranging a time to meet one on one with him. The class is super test heavy and some problems just bamboozled me, maybe I was overthinking cause I got A's in every other class but I'm excited to have him next semester.
Super passionate about what he teaches and also accessible outside class. Willing to answer any and all questions and offer extra help if needed.
Honestly, he is probably going to be the best Professor youre going to have. Take his Gen Chemistry course. However, read the textbook chapters prior to class. Trust me, it will help. Also, he is very accessible outside of class.
Dr. Larsen was so helpful. He continuously showed his passion for chemistry through his lectures. The man is so darn articulate. He made concepts accessible. He wants you to do well on the exams, so go to his (not the other) review sessions. The homework can be annoying and difficult, but if you study and listen, you can get a decent grade! Curved
He's a really great professor who helped me to understand chemistry through his lectures, he gives really good examples in class too.
Larsen is a great prof, he's caring and he is passionate about his work. However be ready to teach yourself A LOT. This is a hard course as is and honestly I didn't find lectures helpful. It's more of an issue about the chemistry departments test rather than Larsens, but you have to teach yourself a lot.
Dr. Larsen is a genuinely good professor that wants you to do well. His lectures are well put together, and he is very excited and knowledgeable about the subject. There are daily quizzes, but they are useful in understanding and keeping up with the material, short, and worth bonus points at the end of the semester.
