He's very intelligent but that is also his downfall at times.sometimes when he tries to explain things, it still is not clear enough. He basically just lectures in class. Not much student participation is required.
this is a required class for all students and he assumes we are all english doctorates and have read a million books. he constantly makes reference to characters in books that are not invloved in our class
Very little work involved. He had us do reponse papers once a week, but they only had to be about 1 page handwritten. Grade was based on those, a midterm paper, and a final paper. Easy grader. He lectures the whole class, not much participation is needed.
Russell Potter looks like a sprightly elf when he lectures. It's adorable. He makes tons of jokes that go way over everyone's heads, but he's a nice guy.
awesome professor!!!! REally knowledgeable and interesting, extremely light work load. Take him!
Dr. Potter's 202 class was fairly easy b/c of the light workload and small amount of class participation required. He is super-nice, witty and makes jokes, lectures most of class time. Is open to student's differing opinions and theories. Wrote helpful comments on my final paper drafts.
He's great. Looks and sounds like Frasier... good teacher and pretty funny. easy class
Classes are really easy. All lectures about the readings. Really funny (if you get his jokes). Grading system on papers is a little tougher than you'd expect but not too bad. Really nice guy
Very intellectual and adorable. Extremely helpful and funny. Constantly makes jokes and can relate any text to The Simpsons. I highly recomend Dr. Potter.
Potter is Hot Hot Hot! The funniest and most entertaining professor I have ever had. You learn so much in has class without even realizing you are learning... he makes it effortless. If you are an English major, you can't let yourself graduate without at least taking him once... a breath of fresh ai
Potter is the best. He is very funny and incredibly smart. Although 202 was a bit boring, because of the reading, he always made it enjoyable. Don't be afraid to take risk in your paper writing and you will do fine. He's so damn cute, too.
I was scared the whole semester because I didn't do my readings. AT ALL. I did weekly response papers that I pulled out of my butt and it didnt matter. I did really well on the papers. I was so scared for the final because I hadnt read anything. But it was all common sense really and I got an A- in the class. I was like YAAAAAAAAAAAA Potter.
Dr. Potter is very passionate about what he does. He made this class very enjoyable. He's not exactly hard but he does make you think! There is no way you could fail this class and if you do it's not because of Dr.Potter. He is very fair when it comes to grading and he gives you more than enough chances to pass. If you can TAKE THIS CLASS!!!
what a weird little man. also, he's never around before class, after class, or during hisoffice hours. luckily he doesn't actually expect you to do any of the work he assigns.
Potter is an interesting character, I really liked him and what he had to say in class. Very easy going and laid back - tends to talk alot if students have nothing to say. I hope to have him again.

Very interesting class. He is well read and knows much. Not only is he helpful he is really a great guy. Not to mention cute.

Potter is the man, He went over all the plays in class the day after the readings so you understood them. He didn't let you walk into gunfire unprepared.
Dr. Potter is extremely helpful and one of the best Profs in the English department. He's helpful and explains things very well. He also has a really funny sense of humor, but you have to listen for it. He's very knowledgeable and I highly recommend him
Dr. Potter is a very good professor whom I would recommend to anyone.

Potter falls into the category of my favorite professors. He's the most laid back teacher you'll find. He can be a bit unorganized and always late, but his methods of teaching help you understand the reading material. He will simply explain it to you. He also has a sense of humor. They say take the professor...not the calss. A must take.
Sadly, my limited income was wasted on a class that was purported to be a Modern English Grammar class-instead we learned that "EBONICS" is a viable alternative to standard Englsih-Prof always late and disorganized- no class structure- relies on students to lead the discussion- no discussion-class ends early- doesn't believe in evaluation-
Class is not structured at all. Always late (atleast 15 minutes each class). Constantly cancelled classes. Sits in the front of the room waiting for students to lead discussion. Does not respond to emails. Course was SUPPOSED to be critical issues in Africa...turned into an African lit class with books that were ridiculously hard to understand.
absolutely the worst professor i've ever had, supposed to be open discussion, wouldn't let any of us speak, lost my semester long project, very late to class, very unorganized, teaching a media studies class and doesn't even watch TV (only videos)
We have Potter Monday and Thursday, but for 6 Thursdays in a row he cancelled class. Only took attendence 2 or 3 times. Never need to do a lot of reqading, just engough ti write a short response online. 2 papers and 1 exam. He literally reads the homework reading outloud in class.
If you are looking for a professor who teaches what he is suppose to and is intelligent, then take Potter! He explains eveything, he will continue explaining the material even if you have nothing to ask which works for me because I don’t always know what I didn’t get.If you do ask a question, he actually answers it!He knows what he is talking about!
I took his summer Hip Hop class and while it was very easy, I didn't really enjoy the class. I liked parts of it, but overall felt he spent too much time talking about the same things over and over and not really exploring other aspects much. Easy class though.
Always late for class. Cancelled class 6 times during the summer!Requires 3 texts and then never uses them. Tries to convince the class that Ebonics is a valid alternative to Standard English. This class was a sad joke and a waste of my money!
Although he cancels class often and doesn't take attendance, Potter is an awesome person and I think it is just something English majors should do- break the norm and take a class with potter. He can be boring but he is passionate about his work and tries to involve everyone
Had him for the Tolkien class. An well informed Professor, always willing to take the time in class to clarify his points and works closely and constructively with his students. He's an easy grader and allows his students to rewrite papers. He rarely missed class. I highly recommend taking him.
Not president of his fan club. I had him for Western Lit, and YOU DON'T EVEN NEED TO READ! Seriously, I read everything and got a B. He didn't like the opinions I stated in my papers. So what, dude, get over it! It's so unfair because the kid who reads all 7 books can get the same grade as one who doesn't read anything. Easy pass, not an easy A!
It is impossible to fail Western Lit with Potter! Take him. You don't need to go to every class or even read the books. Just make some posts on WebCt and do the 2 papers. No homeworks in this class and the final is opinion essays.
What can I say...the guy is barely in class. I didnt understand his grading policy. He never wrote any corrections on my paper and just gave me a grade. His final exam consists of all open-ended question so there is no right/wrong answers. Overall, the class was boring but very simple and easy.
Boring class. It's fine at first, but I eventually hated it. Says participation is necessary but talks the whole time during class. All you really have to do is 2 papers, a final, and weekly posts (once a week). Easy class, though. Just reaaaaally boring. He knows his stuff, it's just not as interesting to you as it is to him.
Pretty much the best prof. you can ask for.
Took him last semester and am taking him again next semester. He's really easy, and very knowledgeable, BUT his classes can be a bore. You don't have to read half the stuff and work load is super light. He speaks in a really low voice that makes me sleepy, but he is honestly into what he teaches. He talks most of the class though.
Took Dr. Potter for summer session (History of Hip Hop)..awesome teacher ! he really loved the course material and it showed through. easiest class EVER.
I love his classes. 2nd time taking him. The topic is boring but he makes it interesting. Lenient on attendance. Papers are fun to do because you can do something that interests you. Encourages rewrites. Finals are take-home and basically opinion-based so its that much easier. One of the few English prof's I would recommend.
Prof Potter is by far the easiest teacher I have taken at RIC..BUT he is also by far the most enthusiastic about what he is teaching...I could care less about Victorian Lit but Im in class now and he makes the material come alive..also took HIP HOP with him in the summer...really great Prof and ez on attend and grading...highly recommend taking him
Great professor! Four papers to write and they aren't bad at all. Very clear on what he wants from you too. All he does is focus on those four papers and that's all you do all semester. Very helpful. Would take again.
Professor Potter is more concerned with comprehension and expounding ideas than he is with paper grades. He'd much rather you turn assignments in late and make clear effort than be punctual and not engage in the material. He's a wealth of intelligence, his voice is dulcet and he's the most adorable guy around.
I have mixed feelings about this guy. He's real nice, but isn't clear about what he wants in papers which makes it more difficult but there aren't exams or stupid in class papers, just 2 or 3 papers over the semester. He doesn't take attendance! Definitely like him enough to take him again. DEFINITELY take him over any other Engl. Professor at RIC!
Dr. Potter is more concerned with your understanding of the material than with grades. That being said if you understand the material chances are you are going to get a good grade. Point being, he's good at getting the material across. Paper req. not unclear, he lets you choose topic from class material and write about what interests you.
Dr. Potter is the nicest professor you'll meet at RIC. Also, he's very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about what he teaches. I liked that he used various types of media - photos, sound clips, films, internet, comics, etc.- to contextualize whatever he's teaching at the moment. Workload manageable, and he's a fair grader. Definitely recommended.
Smart guy, sometimes struggles to get his points across. The summer course was one paper and a final, along with responding to the blog each week. Hard to shoot for an A in the class, he has unclear expectations for the final. Paper is open topic and he offers an edit.
Great professor, makes learning fun. He believes that "education cannot be somehow measure by some test," but that it's a learning process. Really made this boring class interesting. Very informal and very fair, you will not find a better English teacher at RIC.
This guy is great, really interesting and intelligent. He doesnt believe in grades or exams HOWEVER thats not exactly great for those of us who want an A. Def an easy pass, but you'll have to work at it a bit for an A. Grade based only on two papers and class participation (weekly blog). He's interested in the ideas you have not the presentation
Initially there is the hope of an interesting class. His enthusiasm admirable, eventually his dulcet tones induce sleep rather than promote discussion. Students are the audience with no chance of refund. Professor Potter is charming however an english class without reference to the text and lacking class discussion has no value to English majors.
He's a nice guy but the class is painfully boring he only took attendance like 3 times and everyone stopped showing up. Pretty easy though for someone who didn't even read any of the books he assigned
What is great about him? He is absent for most part of the semester and bore you to death when he does show up! Hard grader for only 2 papers, try other professors.
Excellent teacher and amazing human being. I enjoyed every moment of his class because his enthusiasm for the books we read was genuuine. I would recommend his classes to anyone looking for a good grade who is willing to do the work which is read, blog and participate.
Great professor, I took the summer class, one paper and weekly blogs about the books. Attendance not mandatory, i was only absent when i had to be. Barely read the books, and still passed with an A. Make sure your papers are great tho, i went to him about five time for revision before handing my final draft.
Outstanding professor with that rare combination of intelligence, passion and wit. Lots of reading, writing and blogging. The class discussions on our readings was interesting and fun and he's genuinely interested in your opinion. He is very fair and he offered extra credit for writing an extra short paper. I give Dr. Potter an A+
Dr. Potter is an awesome teacher. He assigns books that he genuinely likes and most of them EXCEPT THE TEMPEST are good reads. He says attendence is mandatory but if you have a good reason for your absence (work full time etc) he will understand. Beautiful speaking voice that will lull you to sleep if you work the night shift. Overall great!
Awesome. Educated. Awesome. Must take. Awesome. He's awesome. Must take. Awesome. Potter <3
Great professor! I love going to his lectures! They were always so witty and informational, he really likes to get into the topics and have a good time. Easy grader--two papers and a take home final. I would highly recommend him!
Great professor, assigns great books and minimal work as to not distract from the readingenjoyment of the reading. Two papers and blogs to do for every book, easy A especially if you actually read the books. Doesn't take attendance but you'll want to go to class anyway!
He is a great Professor, very nice and very funny. There was no final in this class, just two paper so it was rather easy. I would gladly take him again for other classes
Professor Potter is quirky and very nice! Probably one of the easiest, laid back professors i have taken! very entertaining with all his accents while reading material! haha .. class fell on tuesdayfriday and he canceled class on fridays a lot which was awesome. as well as let us leave early! No final. 2 papers. online discussion!
The most boring classes ever. He goes on rambling about stuff thats not important. He's not exciting the class was fill with majority on their phones, one student was actually watching a movie on his iPad during class with his headphones on!!! Going to class is a waste of time, when all he assigned was two papers and blogs to write on.
Greatest English professor at RIC. This was a hybrid summer course. One blog response a week, and a paper on topic of students choice due at the end. Potter is very interested in what he teaches; if you humor his tangents and show interest, it's an easy class. Would take again.
No final, only 2 papers. Taken for Connections gen ed. Nice guy. At first the class might seem boring but give it time and you will start to appreciate the course. great to take if you're loaded with other courses
Awesome professor!!! I would definitely recommend any of his classes to others. Easy grader, no exams. Just complete the readings, blog posts, and final essay--your golden!
Easy professor. Don't really have to show up, he doesn't take attendance and most people didn't even read the books. Class is all blog posts and then 2 papers (midterm, final). Depending on the class you take it can be really interesting which made me show up / do all the reading anyway :)
Take this prof!! Very passionate!! Awesome!!
Dr. Potter's first year writing course is probably the easiest class at RIC. It was all creative writing pieces and the classes were usually less than an hour. A lot of group work and projects. Grading was very unclear.
Easiest English class I have taken thus far. Online blogging on literature discussed was mandatory as well as 2 papers. He also gives you the opportunity to revise your papers. Very witty during lectures, although some students were a tad young to understand his humor, I got it, and that made the lectures so much fun. Highly recommended!
I took ENGL 120 over the summer as a hybrid class over the summer. It was super easy. I honestly have no idea of the overall course grade breakdown. All we did was one paper, some blog posts, and maybe one or two in class writing assignments. He allowed for a rough draft submission of the final paper which he critiqued.
easy A only if you do all the online blogs, and a final research paper.... make you give him a draft of your research paper, you also get his feedback, other than that you are golden.
weekly responses to blog, and two papers. class was actually pretty interesting. watch a lot of movies, some of them are really boring, but not that bad. class was cool, and professor was nice. would take another class with him, and if youre looking for an easy connections class, this is it.
Professor Potter has been by far one of the best professors I have taken at RIC, he is incredibly inspirational having gone to numerous places that we discuss in class. He is well respected in his field and even pops up in a few movies that you watch in class. 2 Papers for the class, no final, and just requires 8 Blog entries. Super easy class.
Only had to respond to blog posts every week on topics covered in class or homework readings plus 2 papers that he let's you pick the topic for. He's a really easy grader and even let's you redo it for a better grade based on his feedback. The classes can get a bit dull but he's a super nice guy and the class was super easy.
Take this class for an easy A
Attendance is not mandatory, he assigns a few blog posts online, a few books to read which I never read one, you can get by with just watching the films he assigns in class/online. Also 2 lengthy essays for midterm and final.
Has a clear and simple syllabus. You do not need to buy a dozen books because he finds them for you to read for free, and they're all short reads. Only graded 2 things: a blog post every week on either the book or a film he shows in class and one 5-6 page paper due in final form the last week of class. Attendance wasn't mandatory either. He's great
easy class, not easy A, professor not clear on grading
loved his class. consist of responding to vlog post, few papers due, easy reading material. he provides the links to reading material, saves you time and money. fair grader, everything is explained thoroughly. no surprises. I definitely recommend him
Best professor for connections course. Very easy class just read and do the journal Entries and 2 papers and thats it. I have been inspired by this man and even met a famous actor because of him. Very good and recommended for Connections course Artic Encounters.
Very easy connections course. No exams; just 2 papers and you have to respond to weekly blog posts. He really loves the material he teaches and it's pretty interesting. Very laid back and easy class.
I took Dr. Potter for an Early Spring class and you can tell that he enjoys what he teaches. Our course was on Arctic Encounters we read 3 books, write blog posts and reply to other students blog posts and 1 paper. Dr. Potter has written articles and featured in a movie talking about Arctic. I would definitely take him again!
He is a really sweet guy! I took him for English 120, there is a blog post, papers on the topic discuss in class and movies, and class is not mandatory. but I still attend just to gain some details from the movies so I can write my papers. I'll take him again. no book.
If you need ENG 120 take him, such a nice professor, provides feedback and answers emails fast. He also provides feedback to improve your grade on papers and work is manageable. This includes one blog post each week and two papers throughout the whole course! I have taken two courses with this professor, highly recommend.
If you need an english credit, I highly recommend taking him. He is very passionate and gives great feedback on essays. There was a lot of reading and only two large essays in this class. He allows you to send in essays early for feedback, and even allows you to edit and resubmit them after they are due. He is caring and wants the best for you.
Professor Potter was a pretty good teacher. He only graded the mid term and final paper, but he gives great feedback to fix your paper to get a good grade. Very sweet guy, but he kind of rambles a lot in class and it can get boring.
This class was just weird. Potter himself is a great guy and the class content is great, but this was unlike any class I have ever taken. It is very easy with just a discussion post a week and 2 papers. Although, class is just him googling things and talking without engaging with us or asking us questions. This is both good and bad.
I had a great time in English 261. We read a lot of books that were all equally interesting, and he did a great job of condensing a 15 week course into 3 weeks. It was all online and we had one project (an essay) at the end and we had 2 book summaries due each week. Very fun class.
Dr. Potter is a cool guy and his class is super easy. He really only grades 2 papers and participation (i think?). Class is extremely boring and he will ramble for an hour - hour 1/2. You would have to try to fail this class. Idk very easy, so if you need an english credit take Russel.
Great professor, however I felt at times he rambled for awhile during his lectures. If you have any questions, he was always more than happy to help.
Two papers, a midterm and a final. Rest of the grade is based on you responding to his weekly discussion post on his blog. Once a week+just a paragraph+can wait until the end of the semester to do these. Very understanding and will be adjust for you if you ask (goes further if you talk a little in class). He also loves to talk current events. A++++
Potter is one of the best teachers at this school. This is my second time taking his class in the summer sessions. Honestly if you're trying to knock out gen ed's take his accelerated classes. Its very low stress high reward and he makes you care about what you're learning, even if you were not interested initially, but the lectures are long.
Professor Potter is a great guy, lectures are long but it was only 1 day a week. You can tell he cares a lot about what he's teaching. Very easy class for the credits, I'll be taking him again in a different class to cover my communications credits in the spring.
Sweet man, you just have to write a few sentences about the topic and then it is all set. He doesn't take attendance unless he hasn't seen you in a while. he's easy compared to other teachers
Professor was okay, good class to take to get an elective out of the way. If you like things arctic, great, if not doesn't matter. Graded few things, "attendance" which was never taken, online discussion posts, and 1 final paper with some liberty in choosing the topic. The lectures were mostly recap of outside of class work, nothing more.
Not difficult content wise, difficult personality. Arctic encounters is a joke. this class has no structure and his lectures are just him googling images to talk about for the 1.5 hr lecture. His grading is unclear and only counts attendance if it HURTS your grade not helps. His grading was incredibly difficult and not fairHorrible Prof Joke Class
Such a nice, thoughtful, intelligent, well rounded educator. I highly recommend taking a class with him if y
Dr. Potter is a very kind and thoughtful professor, I think arctic encounters is interesting, definitely a good option for Connections gen-ed compared to some other classes I've taken. You meet once a week for lectures and have readings/discussion post for homework every week, and 2 papers.Would take more classes with him if I was an English major!
He's very passionate about what he teaches. I feel like he should be British. I couldn't tell you why.
Professor Potter is a fun, engaging instructor. His class has minimal assignments but the lectures can be long. With the help of unstuck study and the free reading materials, I was able to do well and get a good grade. Definitely recommend for an easy gen-ed credit.
Super passionate, does not get political like other professors, and genuinely loves what he does. He is very clear about what is expected and he is realistic. If I could take him for every class, I would!
Nice to most students but nitpicks specific students the entire semester and tanks grade based on feeling. Super easy class as long as he doesn't randomly decide he doesn't like you.
The grading is unclear—only two papers count, even if you attend every class and complete all discussion posts. You can revise the first paper using his feedback, but the improvement is minimal. Since discussion posts aren't graded, your effort there doesn't help, making it feel like participation and consistency don't matter.
Judgemental person
Dr. Potter is such a kind and thoughtful professor. I took Arctic Encounters as a Connections gen-ed and genuinely enjoyed it. We met once a week and had weekly readings and discussion posts, plus two papers. The class was super engaging with short clips, interesting articles, and great conversations. I'd take another class with him in a heartbeat!
I'm taking this in the summer hybrid format. Insanely easy. Only 1 paper, which you essentially have 6 weeks to do. He just yaps the entire class, doesn't call on anyone. You can zone out and be just fine for the 2hrs. All you have to do is a discussion board before next class, which are usually general questions that barely require actual reading.
One of the easiest classes ever. He lectures the entire time which I enjoy because he doesn't require group work like so many professors do. He's funny too so I found his lectures enjoyable and he doesn't require you to paticipate in class. Not many assignments either, just a few short papers. I wish he taught more classes!
Class was so easy, don't bother buying the books he says to buy, you don't need to. Lecture's all class, you don't need to pay attention. 2 papers is it, easiest connections class to take
A goated professor. Taken for Connections, his classes are just lectures and discussions alongside BB discussion boards and two papers you gotta write. He is an easy grader as long as you're speaking on your opinion about the topic matter. Very enthusiastic on his teachings and loves to discuss about entertaining topics. go get them free credits.
if you need an english 100% take him. You do not need to buy the books I bought them and have not opened them. The entire class is just him talking so you really can multi task. You just need to answer a reading question before class on blackboard and theres the midterm paper and final paper. Most definitely take this class cant stress it enough
