Really sucks, can't teach
Hard course !
Dr. Beatie is hard, but fair. She will teach you how to study
I don't know how I'm still a science major after this course... 13 A's in a class of over 200 students -- and no curve. Tests cover rediculous amounts of book material, and very little that was actually covered in class... avoid this woman at all costs!
Inconsistent. Tests are not hard, but they ares stupid. Hard to study when the unimportant will be on the exam.

Wow! No other profs teaching this course. I got screwed as I was not able to avoid her. Sit in the front and she may cut you some slack on late work! Otherwise, take it at LCC if offered.

Great professor, but tough. Need to be very attentive in class. Study for the final the day you start the class! It is extremely hard.
She is the worst teacher I have ever had!! I don't think that anyone in my class passed. Whatever you do, DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS!!!
Very unclear in lecture, but I missed half the semester for being sick, and she helped me TREMENDOUSLY when it came to completing the course.

She is pretty straight foward. I don't know why people complain!
She's hard... especially for a level 100 course
do not take this course unless it is a requirement. it is terrible, lectures are over simplified, and tests are over complicated.
Pay attention in class and try your hardest to find old exams. They are hard to find. Other than that I did not think this class was too bad, I studied the night before the tests and made B's on them.
Don't go to class-nothing she talks about will be on the test. Tests are over about 10 chapters each time and the final covers about 40 chapters. Take with Cohen.
I didn't know hell could be room temperature.
Class doesn't help. Her tests are not straight forward at all. She can't pronounce anything correctly and spells eukaryotes-"eucaryotes"
she is unclear and her tests are impossible!
She is the worst, most boring teacher I have ever had. Her tests were very hard even though the material was not. Stay away from this professer!!
I was forced to stop going to class after the first test first because her tests have nothing to do with lecture, and second just the sight of her put me in a bad mood. She is a horrible teacher.
lectures are for middle school kids, and exams are seriously the most impossible to even get a D on, shoot for a high F. The final is over 40 chapters with 400 students in the room. She will ruin your gpa. She did mine. 151 is 8 or 9 am so u haveno chanc
She is very nice in person and she will help you if you talk to her. She is one of the smartest people in the Biology Dept. Don't judge the book by its cover and you will be fine! I learned ton in this class. Her exams are challanging!
The tests are way too hard. The questions are tricky to the point where you'd think she's evil. Sorry if you have to have her!
HARD AS HELL!!!!

Three tests, three assignments, one extra credit chance. I got a B-, a C+ on the first two tests, and did the extra credit and ended up with an A. She's SO boring. If you dont go to class your really should read the book, and look at someone's notes for tests...its rough. Good Luck...
I LOVED bio before taking class, but I couldn't even watch Discovery Channel the summer after class. She has a GREAT sci/edu resume, but she doesn't ACTUALLY TRY during lectures.ONce,she said over half class got complex question wrong, she said"I won't go through it with you, you'll figure it out" LAZY!
I really like Dr. Beattie. She asks some hard questions on the test but it just motivates you to work harder. Her class is hard, but biology majors should get used to working hard. She is an excellent professor and is very helpful.
This class is very tough, but i think Dr. Beattie is a very good professor. You can't expect to do well in this class if you have no interest in biology or if u plan to pass the tests solely by going to class or just reading the text...it takes both. You actually have to work for your grade
Not an easy class if you are Science challenged. She does know her subject area, and is fairly good at teaching it. Tests are hard, but are easier if you buy the Thinkwell CD. Overall, she is a nice person, approachable, kinda looks like the trekkie kid that got beat up in highschool.
Good teacher, but you MUST read the book, study notes, and use the online quizzes in order to do well. Grade scale is somewhat lenient.

Ugh, what is there to say about this woman that has not already been said? I couldn't stand to attend her boring lectures, so I just read the book the night before the tests. I really dont know how I ended up with a B in that class.

She's cranky, and expects way too much work for a 100 level class. You have to go to class and read EVERYTHING in the textbook to be prepared for the exam. She thinks her class is the most important thing on your agenda and purposely grades hard. She also cannot keep her liberal viewpoints out of a BIOLOGY class. If you can avoid her, stay away.

Seriously the worst teacher I have ever had.She is so boring and unclear in her lectures. Her tests are very difficult and the average is usually a D!She will tell you not to expect the test to come from the notes because she wants you to read the whole book, and fully comprehend it on your own because she sucks at explaining it.
She is strict but very helpful. I missed a couple of classes in a row and I went to see her during office hours and she printed off her power point notes for me to study with. Treat her with respect and she will do the same to you.
her lectures put you to sleep everyday, and her tests do not even come from lecture notes. She asks the most random, insignificant facts on the tests, they do not reflect your understanding of lecture and it is extremely hard to get an A on any test STAY AWAY!!
She is a terrible instructor--do not take this class, and if you do bad, don't let this class weed you out and make you think you can't get into med school. Her teaching is the reason that UK will never be a Top Ten school.
she is the most uninteresting professor and seems to design the tests to make sur eyou cant get an A
this is the worst class ive ever taken. it is soo boring and the tests are impossible. although dr. beattie is extremly nice and has a somewhat dry sense of humor, it doesnt make up for the class. STAY AWAAAAYYYYYYY and if u end up in her class, i feel for you.
this is possibly the worst class i have ever taken. this woman breezes through material and then doesn't include any of it on the nearly impossible tests. i studied for 12 hours for one of my tests and still had never seen half of the information on the test anywhere before and got a 66%. she is a worthless teacher.
She will raise your grade a letter grade if you go bug her during office hours.
I found her lectures really interesting. She give great examples and does nice visual representations on the overhead. The class is hard, because hey, biology is just memorization so she has to spruce it up. If you fall alseep in this class maybe a bio major isn't for you? Read the book and use the CD with it! Help when studying for tests!! ; )
Lets face it, Ruth was the most monotonous teacher in my history of education. 8am class is bad enough but when a female ben stien is teachign the calss consciousness is a near impossibility. the tests were very tough and it was very unclear waht to study.
This class was online. She made the test too hard for a class that doesn't have a lecture. Test are in the classroom unlike last semester where they were online and easier. Too much reading. Lesson learned: don't take this class online...way too hard.
Horrible....she is a necessary evil for bio majors. Tests are very hard and tricky. Don't even bother studying for the final because she doesn't teach what will be on it. She takes a lot of her tests questions from the CD that comes with the bio book.
GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN!!!!!!
Dr Beattie is a very nice woman.. People who are talking bad about her probably dont even go to class or sleep through it. You just have to be prepared. Yes her tests are very tricky but still she will help anyone who needs it. Its a tough class but it wasn't HORRIBLE like many people say.
Even though her tests are hard, all you have to do it study and you will do well in her class. She is also very helpfull in her office hours and will answer any question you have. Going to class helps as well. Do the end of the chapter problems and the CD questions.
I don't know where Beattie gets her bad reputation. I didn't study very hard and got an A, no sweat. It probably just comes down to how much you like biology. But in my opinion, this woman spoon feeds you (if you want someone who makes you work a little, take Bonner)
She is a really nice teacher and I actually enjoyed he class. She gives really good lectures and notes for you to take. Everything she goes through in class is on the test, but she words the questions really tricky
This class is super hard. There is a ton of material and not enough time to cover it all. Tests are over 10 chapters... no kidding! Ruth does help you out a bit with a lower grading scale and some extra credit. STUDY STUDY STUDY and you might get a B
Very hard class..Lectures are very boring and very little she teaches is on the test..5 HW assignments, 3 tests, and 1 group project..DR BEATTIE DOES NOT CURVE!!!!
I rarely went to class and I did fine, I would just follow her "questions to ponder before Exam" and just use common sense on the exams. She does give you more than some professors.
It's a pretty tough class. I think the notes are not enough for the test, because some of the questions, i have never came across the terms in the book or notes.
She's a very difficult teacher. Her lectures only skim the surface of what is actually on the exams. The exams are very detailed and require at least two weeks of extreme prepare work. Definitely keep up with the reading. She's a very nice lady but an impossible teacher.
horrible
Although Dr. B was boring, this class was super easy so there for i liked it! i did AWFUL on all 3 exams and still passed w/ a high c ....

The course I took with Dr. Beattie was difficult. I studied a lot for the exams, I even read all of the assigned reading from the book, but the tests were not that hard as long as you knew the information from the notes and the assigned reading. I learned more in her course than I did in some of my upper level bio classes.
I liked her class it was very interesting. The best strategy was to make note cards. Overall she was very helpful and fair. However she did require ALOT of studying. I've aced the first two tests so she isn't very hard.
Dr. Beattie is a very difficult teacher. Her lectures are interesting and she is a good teacher. However, the tests are difficult and you must read and do Thinkwell. I didn't get to read for the final and that caused me to get a B.
honestly she isnt that bad of a teacher...i never went to class and just read the book before the test and easily got an A...notes are pointless though
I do not remember anything from this class other than the DNA structure. Dr. Beattie's lectures were boring and did not reflect material on the test. The weekly assignments were the only thing that kept me from having a terrible grade in this class.
nice person
She is really boring to listen to and her class is boring. But, if you read the book and study for tests, she is not bad. Her notes aren't very helpful though.
One of my favorite professors at UK. She's crazy smart! Even though she can be difficult at times, and sometimes boring, she really drives biology into your brain. Tests can be hard, so make sure you study, and try to go to class at least once a week, it may be the difference between an A and a B, take my word for it.
not as hard as everyone says. willing to help & answer questions in office hours especially if she can tell you're putting forth the effort. class is helpful & i would definately recommend reading the chapters she says to in the syllabus. staying caught up with the reading & coming prepared for class is my best advice
class is really actually interesting but the tests are difficult. its hard to get a good grade trying to just read over her notes. read the actual material she tells you to.
Hard class, if you didnt have a good background in bio or its been since freshmen year in high school since you learned DNA and cells and junk, do NOT fall behind on reading. The notes alone are not enough. Also do the homework yourself, dont copy someone elses. Learning the hw gives you 10-12 quest. on the test easy. Tests are difficult/tricky.
Great professor, provides countless extra materials to assist in learning the subject matter, tests are straightforward and are drawn directly from the material
Of coarse this class is going to be difficult, its considered the first bio class for any pre-professional track. Therefore, IT IS A WEED OUT CLASS. If you dont have to take it then dont take it, this is not a cake class. Be prepared to put in some effort.Read the text,go to class, study and you will do fine. An A is hard to do, but not impossible
Went to every single grueling 8 am class before the first test got a very low C. Skipped class until the second test got a B. My opinion of the uselessness of the teacher's lecture not the teacher.
smoke show
I took this class online. It was very difficult, even after reading all chapters and supplements assigned. The only grades that factored into the final grade were tests (there was no homework grade, etc.) so it was extremely hard to do well. I met with Beattie for assistance and she was of no help! You are tested over in-depth matieral not covered.
Beatie's tests are in depth, and about 1/6th of the material is not covered in class or in the book I think, although it does benefit you if you go to class, read over notes, and do the reading assingments. Doing all of the homework assignments helped me to keep a B in the class!
Extremely bland and boring teacher and never ever seems to be happy. Always stern and her tests are extremely challenging. If it can be avoided i would not take this teacher
Very old fashioned and difficult to talk to. Doesn't care about student well being. She is very by the book. I would avoid this professor.

Good teacher. Her tests were fair and she lectures well. It's a challenging class but I'm glad I had her and not Dr. Cohen.
Great teacher but a little dry. Read the textbook - according to Dr. Beattie, lectures are for clarifying textbook material, not to teach new stuff. Tests are about knowledge application, not just memorization. She wants you to LEARN not just regurgitate info. But an 85 is an A. She's really nice, especially one-on-one.
Dr. Beattie is a great teacher. She wants students to learn and apply. Also she is very nice. Those who complain about her being "hard" or "boring" should learn that college is about learning not being entertained. Take her class, you will learn a lot.
Beattie, despite what people say, is a great teacher. How she pronounces certain words can keep me entertained (listen for the word again). Other than that she expects you to read the book and she does her job very well. I learned a lot in this class.
her lecture material has almost been pointless for me. i will end up with an A or high B and it was very difficuklt to know what to read in that awful book! between the second exam and final she assigned 8 chapters i think, maybe more. i didnt like the quality of her teaching skills. knows her stuff though.
She makes bio extremely easy, the way she grades is awesome. You literally only need an 85% in her class to get an A. Love Beattie!
Beattie is definitely a character. She is so boring that she becomes somewhat entertaining, and her pronunciation is fun. Her exams are somewhat difficult and require that you read the text as well as understand the notes from lecture. Old exams, if you can find them, are extremely helpful. Sometimes she asks things you would never expect.
Good teacher. Everything is fair game in the book and the lectures are only for clarifcation and to emphasize the book. A 85% is an A. Read the book, highlight, and now everything in the chapter unless she says no to. She is also very willing to help.
Nothing new to add. I used the Cliffnotes AP Bio review book to study for the final exam and made an A. This is a great thing to do if you want to do well in the class without having to read the entire campbell book.
Good teacher. Somewhat boring but she is pretty easy to follow. The videos, however, at the end of the semester are pointless. Just walk out if she shows them. Make sure to actually read the book because she pulls quite a bit from it for her tests.
Do not take this class online. It is impossible to learn everything and the exams are Saturdays at 8AM!
Sort of boring.Tests are tricky and somewhat hard. Teaches very effectively. Presents material very fast so learn to write and or type very fast.
ridiculously hard class and she only makes it harder. avoid at all costs
ridiculously hard class. She is extremely helpful but it doesnt take away from the fact that that class is impossible
Great teacher -- she can be boring but she knows what she is doing. Pay attention and for the love of God make sure you read the book! Her lectures are very helpful, but it only will cover half of her exams. Read. The. Book.
Ruth is definitely informative in class, but her lectures arent the only material that impact your exam grade. The information in the text will definitely pop up again on exams. The booklet with review questions and topics to review are also crucial to success. With these tools, the beast of BIO 150 is more kitten than dragon.
READ THE BOOK! Her class is very boring, I felt like I taught myself the entire class
Difficult class, but a nice challenge. Love the professor strangely. Made things simple in class.
She is a GREAT professor! Class is not mandatory but you should go because she explains concepts so well. She is very passionate about what she does and you can really tell that she cares about our grades. She is willing to help you when ever. Excellent teacher and sweet person. (She pronounces things oddly in class but I think it is entertaining).
Very boring class, very boring teacher. coming to class is not mandatory and not needed. Nothing she talks about in class is on the exams. And the exams are EXTREMELY hard. I would not take Beattie if there were any other options.
Beattie knows her stuff but her lectures are extremely boring. I went for about the first month and then quit going to class. Just take notes over the textbook, look at the online study area for MasteringBiology, and you'll do fine. An 85% is an A but she makes you work for it.
DO NOT TAKE COURSE ONLINE!! It was too much and too hard to teach to yourself... no matter how boring she is i will be getting into her class on campus since shes the only bio 208 teacher
Took her for the new BIO-150 class. Overall she was a great lecturer, knew her stuff, and was always willing to help. Tests were pretty hard, especially as some of the questions are tricky and wordy. I will admit that I didn't read the book as much as I should have. Ended up with an A in the class, but by no means an easy one. If you take her, read
Great prof! Hard class with a ton of material to learn but Beattie makes it as easy as possible. She has her sh*t together! I got an A in the course and considered changing my major to BIO...that is until I had other BIO profs. Horrible.
This class was extremely difficult, I pretty much relied on the book because Dr. Beattie's lecture were more like supplementary material. Also, the one time I talked to her she was very rude and hateful and was no help to me at all.
Can be dry but has a helpful grading curve and is very clear about what you need to know. There are definitely worse bio teachers out there. Would not mind taking again.
Lectures aren't very useful for the test. Only supplement what you should teach yourself from the book. An 85 is an A but it's still difficult. Tests are all applying questions so you better know the material. Seems like a nice lady but not the best teacher.
I took her Intro. to Biology class over 10 yrs ago. It was a challenging course, but it above all others helped to prepare me for my upper-level courses. She made expectations clear early on & set her standards high. Thank you, Dr. Beattie. You inspired me so much that I now am also a biology professor & I begin the 1st day of class much like you.
Not helpful at all. Since I don't have to take another bio class, this class was uselessly hard. Lectures prepared for nothing, notes don't help whatsoever. Might as well not go to class, and just memorize the entire book and think of hardest ways to ask the most simple of questions.
This class was difficult. I found that by making my own study guide from the text actually helped me more than going to lecture. Her lecture notes aren't very helpful with exam material. Exam questions are extremely difficult and ask questions about simple concepts in deceiving ways.
This introductory class material has prepared me for the future biology courses. She is very helpful with questions after class or during her office hours. She really knows her stuff. Lecture notes are merely an overview of the material. If you want an A, READ THE BOOK AND TAKE YOUR OWN NOTES!
Very boring lecture. Class doesn't really help, merely an overview of the material. Read the book and study hard for the class.
Yes, read the book! You're in college!
By no means an easy teacher, but her lectures are helpful (even if her voice is a bit dull) and she is extremely clear about what you need to do to pass the class and she means it. No matter how good at biology you think you are. Read the book, go to lecture, and reveiw your notes and you'll be fine.
She goes far too in depth with her examples and doesn't lecture about anything thats on the test. Best advice? read the textbook and study off that, NOT lecture notes.
I currently have an A, and will most likely receive an A. However, her class has all but turned me into a zombie. I probably studied 100 hours for the last test and got a B. She is unfriendly and aloof in her office hours and unless you read the book and know EVERYTHING, you will probably not do well.
She is an awful teacher. This class is so hard because you have no idea what you should and shouldnt study. I hate this class. Unfortunately you cant avoid taking her because she is the only teacher who teaches this class. If you have to take Bio 208 good luck
How to get an A with Beattie: 1. Go to class. 2 TYPE your notes to keep up with her in lecture 3. Study well in advance of test 4. READ THE BOOK, take notes in it, and compare them to your class notes. 5. Use the online tools - do every single activity/quiz that you can on the online thing and review what you get incorrect. Repeat 1-5. Hard work=A
Going to class will not tell you everything that is on the test, but it will help clarify concepts. If you have any questions, Dr. Beattie is more than happy to help you find the answer. The tests are purely based on the text book, so just READ IT.
She is about 11 different shades of awful. Stopped going to class after the first exam because nothing she taught was helpful, just an overview of the chapters I could do myself. She wants you to know nitty-gritty details that do not make a difference in a entry level class. Avoid her if you can!!
Beattie is a very good teacher. While her class is difficult, she is very knowledgable and is able to keep a sometimes boring subject very interesting.
This class was only offered with one section at 8am! So naturally I wasn't present most of the time. Ruth seemed nice, but didn't get to know her too well. Your grade is based off 3 exams and a homework grade (worth as much as a test, so do it!). With more studying I could've got an A. But a B was more than fine.
It's hard, but not impossible. She claims that there is no curve, however, there is a built in curve in her grade scale. Put in the effort and you'll be fine.
You must read the textbook to survive in this class. Her lectures are not relevant to her tests. Test questions are made from the textbook. She does curve the tests some. The class is not impossible. Dr. Beattie is not helpful. Going to office hours does not help. If you don't understand the material, look at the book more.
HORRIBLE professor! Do NOT take this class! AVOID at ALL costs! Beattie is a very knowledgeable person but cannot teach. STAY AWAY
She is a brilliant woman, but a bad professor. Her class is very disorganized and does NOT follow the syllabus. The homework and tests had a lot of information not covered in class. She is hard to understand and doesn't make a lot of effort to help students. It's very hard!!!! Don't take it.
BEWARE OF THE BEATTIE!! Don't even bother going to class, memorize the book. Prepare for the worst on her tests and ask around for old exams. Most of us survived with an A or B after lots of cramming and stressful night but it's possible!
Out of the teachers that teach 148, Dr. Beattie is the hard one. I took her because she fit my schedule and I got an A. Read all of the book chapters and studied notes. (I typed everything!) she does reuse questions from old exams, I found out after I took the class and never had the opportunity to look at old exams.
She is one of the harder 148 professors but loves when you stay after class with a question or come to office hours. The tests have most of their questions from homework so I just studied my homework and got an A. Difficult but worth it.
Attendance was not mandatory, but even it was, it would be pointless to go to class. I never learned anything from lecture, only from the book. The tests come from the book, NOT the lecture. She is a nice lady and she has a lot of reputation in the biological sciences field, but her class is ridiculously hard. Take Osterhage. You'll do better.
Awful
The tests are very difficult and come from material in the textbook, not lecture.
Cares very little about her students. Painfully boring. Basically unwilling to inconvenience herself at all with any student questions. Avoid this professor if you can.
I took BIO 208 online over the summer so it was a very different experience than a typical lecture course. Professor Beattie is knowledgable and avaliable for help if you needed it. There are several ungraded activities and readings to help you learn the material. Then your graded is based on 13 assignments and 3 exams on mastering microbiology.
BEWARE OF THE BEATTIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I showed up once for the in-person project and it's a NIGHTMARE. HEAVY on the quizzes and can't even teach what's on those. The lectures are boring and don't reflect what's going on with microbiology. I question how she is still teaching….
she chill, very easy microbio class
Everything was online except 2 in person assignments, however the in person assignments are rough if your not apart of the lab
