She's a good professor in that she's pretty clear most of the time and hands out class objectives to keep you on track. She really caters to her students as a lecturer so you'll get so quality information in. Test questions are kind of tricky though. It's purely because the questions are so vague.

very good professor, class is not easy but ask for help! She is very helpful and review sessions are excellent prep for tests.
She is an awesome professor, her test cover a lot of material and are very detailed. Don't think that studying a couple nights will do the trick. Start studying early and it will pay off in this course. Old exams that she post are very helpful and so are the obejective questions on her handouts.
Good intro bio class; either the online textbook or the lectures will allow you to learn the material and do well in the class. Professor lectures well and is open to questions.
She is an amazing professor, willing to help you at anytime. :]
She's a great professor who is willing to go out of her way to help her students. The class covers a lot of material, but she's very clear both in lecture and in her expectations.
She is great professor and gives you numerous resources to study with but her grading scale is a little difficult in my opinion. It's hard to get an A, but you will definitely learn a lot and will be prepared for upper division bio courses.
(Plan II Bio) The A is there for the taking. three tests are pretty easy. cool field trip to the beach. pretty boring lectures, but showing up to class boosts your grade for the easier A.
She's really good! She knows what she is talking about and she's a nice lady. I had a really really good TA also, so that helped a lot. Even though I made a C in the class, I actually learned a lot, which is why I made an A the second time around.
Dr. Buskirk is such a likable and approachable professor. I did all the worksheets, read the textbook background, attended office hours frequently, and ended up with an A in the course. If you do that and work hard, you should do well no doubt. Developed a great relationship with her--she's a great professor and person! Definitely recommend!
Super sweet and helpful professor. Didn't really pay attention to her lecture, but there is a small portion of application she loves to put on her tests each time. iClicker participation points in class, and must get a 60% on homework to receive full homework points. Tests are sometimes difficult. Test questions are also sometimes very vague though
If you have a chance, take Dr. Buskirk. I took Bio 311C with Hansen, and 311D with Buskirk, and I enjoyed Buskirk so much more! She was not easy, but she offers different methods and participation points in order to ensure your maximum grade. She is so passionate about her class that you, in turn, are excited to learn! Really enjoyed her!
wow this class was rough! buskirk is always available, she's so fun to talk to, but HER TESTS ARE HARD! Genetics and botany were tough and the class is really fast-paced. I'm not a very good bio student to begin with (look at my C+) but I studied really hard and was so upset :( Here's hoping genetics and o-chem go well... #MedicalSchoolRejected
HER TESTS ARE DIFFICULT; nothing like the iclickers in class or homework.
BEWARE: There's no curve, her tests are difficult, and there's no extra credit, and no drops. She will replace the lowest test grade with the average of the 3 exams before the final.
Great Professor! However, not an Easy A.
Definitely one of the hardest classes I've taken so far in college. right before finals and i have an A but DEFINITELY had to work for it. studied the whole week before each exam and was able to get an A so if you're not willing to put in the effort, do not take her. I'm premed so she was a GREAT help in understanding the material
Take at your own risk. A lot of free response, and she grades harshly
Really nice lady. Wrote me a rec letter! Go to class and take good notes, study the worksheets she gives you, go to discussion sections, and you'll be fine.
Great teacher! Don't be afraid to take her.
Dr. Buskirk is very nice and personable, and quite engaging in her lectures. The tests can be tough, but the homeworks are easy, and in-class clicker questions are not hard at all. Just go to class and pay attention to what she is SAYING.
Most of her test is based off lecture. If you only read the textbook and not show up to class, you will not get higher than C. Book is for supplementary learning. Answer every single question to her learning outcomes - this is what got me the A in the class. By the time you answered all of them, you will be more than ready for the exams.
The only way to do well in class is do the learning objectives she hands out to you.
Dr. Buskirk is amazing, but her class is very hard. She is so passionate about biology, so that makes the lectures really interesting, but you definitely have to put in the work outside of class. Her tests are half free response half multiple choice, and they are really picky about free response answers. You'll work for it, but you will learn a LOT
Buskirk was one of the most incredible lecturers that I've ever seen. Coming from a somewhat diligent student, I thought her class was tough and demanding, but she managed to make each lecture engaging and easy to follow. The tests were very tough and required an ability to synthesize and apply concepts learned in class to real life applications.
3midterms, 1cumfinal LOADS of info per test (MCQ&SHORTAns). Distributes handouts that are unit summaries with objectives. Clicker Attendance everyday but drops some, 1 extra credit to increase grade 1 pt. Tests graded by her and 2 TAs discussion sections required but useless. Go to OfficeHours and opt. field trips with prof
By far my most favorite professor so far. She really cares about her students and goes out of her way to hold lots of Q&A sessions before exams and finals, and her office hours are extremely helpful.
Sweet, sweet professor. But the exams were the death of me. Homework is easy! But the way the exam was worded, I really was screwed. I Love the fact that she knows that her exams are poorly written so she'll answer your questions during the exam. Office Hours are essential to passing.
I took Dr. Buskirk in for Bio311C too and I was able to make an A- in 311D. I truly enjoyed her class and thought she did an excellent job explaining everything. Her exams are pretty tough but once you know what she is looking for it's possible. essentially read the book and do her handout questions as they are the best study methods along with hw.
I hate biology but I loved Dr Buskirk's class. She is so passionate about biology and her lectures were really interesting. The tests are not easy but definitely manageable if you do her handouts and pay attention in class.
Being a Bio major who was still unsure of their major, Dr. Buskirk is the type of professor that makes you truly love and want to learn Biology. She is super passionate and knowledgeable, and in turn, she makes you want to understand the material just for yourself! Handouts are super helpful, only used the book for clarification sometimes.
Dr. Buskirk is the nicest lady ever. She gives good lectures and makes it very clear what you need to know for the test. She has a reputation for giving very hard tests but I really don't understand, I honestly just think that people don't read/ go to office hours as much as they should. Gotta work for it but its really do-able
Took for Plan II Bio--I loved her! Easy class, just show up to lecture and review your notes for the test. One of the sweetest professors I've had. Fun field trip too! You don't need to read the textbook (honestly I wouldn't even bother buying it).
Attend her lectures, she hints on whats on the exam + attendance is mandatory (learned the hard way). Her exams are not bad if you REALLY study. She gives you everything you need to know in her handouts - so study them religiously! She is super helpful and understanding. Advice: type out lecture notes on a WordDoc during lecture - helps A LOT.
She is a very charismatic teacher, her class has very little busy work but don't let this fool you! The tests are tough and can sneak up on you.
let's just put it this way: if you have her, DO NOT switch out of her class. that's how good she is. i'm currently on her waitlist for bio 311d. that being said, if you don't attend all lectures/discussions and do all of the learning objectives, you WILL NOT do well. just reading the textbook won't cut it.
Great teacher with great/engaging lectures. She really wants you to do well but you have to put in the effort/go to class.
Phenomenal lecturer who explains material very clearly. Makes lectures engaging. Course is challenging, but very worth the challenge because you learn and retain the knowledge, as there is much more than memorization of facts- there are real-world applications. Very passionate, intelligent, knowledgeable, sweet, lovely lady who is happy to help!
Great teacher, loves what she does.
Dr. Buskirk is super knowledgeable and passionate about bio. Her lectures are engaging and are to the point without any useless material. Tests are tough and a combo of MC and FR, but if you do the learning objectives you'll likely do well. Focuses a lot more on applying concepts than just rote memorization. Would recommend to everyone.
Dr. Buskirk is the sweetest professor. A great way to start the year. Her final was tough and surprisingly specific, but if you study the handouts, you have all the information you need to do well on the tests. I didn't do as well as I wanted, this was the one class I enjoyed and learned a lot in. She takes attendance, but you can miss a lot.
Buskirk is one of the nicest professors that I've had at UT. She genuinely cares about her students and is always available for questions and help. Her class is not easy, but she makes the material interesting and is eager to teach.
Great lecturer, makes the material easy to understand. Will use examples from class on the tests and has iClicker participation points in (almost) every class, make sure you attend.
Great professor- super nice and caring! She posts notes from her lectures online but they don't cover everything she says and she uses clickers so you have to go to class. Her tests are tricky but she repeats a lot of the questions from homework and clicker questions so if you study and have good grasp of the material, they aren't impossible.
Buskirk is simply amazing. Her lectures only have what is going to be on the test and you don't have to read the textbook, but it is helpful. She gives out paper that tell you what you have to know for the test. If you know everything there you will get a near perfect. She offers Q&A sessions before every test that are extremely helpful.
I absolutely loved Buskirk. Her class was by no means easy but if you keep up with the handouts and go to office hours, you will do well. Her tests are tricky but simple if you don't over think the questions. Read the textbook to learn the basics but tests are mostly application questions which she will go over in lectures and in office hours.
Dr. Buskirk was a fantastic professor who was very passionate about what she taught and lectures usually passed by very quickly because I was always interested. However, her tests are definitely tough. She gives you useful handouts to study, but you still have to be very in-depth and know concepts thoroughly to be able to do well.
She is a very knowledgeable professor and is very passionate about the material. She conducts research in how undergraduates learn biology so she is always trying to innovate in the classroom by trying different things. I learned a lot in her class, but her test questions are very difficult so making an A is definitely not easy!
Great lecturer. Most information for tests comes from lecture. Book is supplementary and nearly unnecessary. Very helpful in office hours. She will make you work for an A but teaches in a way that makes you retain knowledge long-term. Should you choose to take her class, it will likely be one of the best experiences you will have in college.
Second semester taking Dr. Buskirk, she is so awesome and passionate! Exams are tough and very application based, requires a lot of understanding of material. Going to class and taking good notes are vital! But she is very easy to listen to, engaging, and helpful when you're confused about anything. Her TA's are also great!
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing professor! You will learn a ton of stuff in her class. The class is very organized and the workload is perfect. Just make sure you stay on track or you will fall behind for tests. Her tests are pretty tricky. You will have to master every topic from every angle in order to do well on her tests. Take her for Bio if you can!
Dr Buskirk is a great lecturer and overall a nice person. She is always there to help you out. Only thing is this class has a pretty high standard and tests are pretty tricky.
Super intelligent, knowledgeable, caring, sweet, and inspirational! She makes lectures very engaging and relevant. Explains concepts very clearly and is very willing to help! She cares a lot about her students and sets up extra help sessions. She really wants us to succeed, and that's partly why her exams are difficult. Phenomenal lady!
An absolutely phenomenal teacher! I had her for both 311C and 311D and she made the material that students often are wary of very easy to understand. She encouraged questions and took the time to make sure you were truly understood the material. Her tests could be tricky if you don't really know the material, but the point is that you learn.
Amazing teacher! She really cares about success and applying biology to real life examples. I made a B in the class and thought I deserved it. She does bump B's and C's and uses the +/- system. Her test were tricky but if you went to lecture and took good notes then you should be fine!
She's exactly like a grandma. Super sweet and caring, and will answer any questions you have. Her class is a standard lecture format, but very understandable if you go to class. Her objective sheets are very helpful for studying for tests. Also, her TAs are phenomenal! They both care so much about what they do (my favorite is Gareth!).
I took this class to fulfill the Plan II biology requirement. I loved Professor Buskirk. She is super knowledgeable and nice (which I know, weak adjective, but its true!). Pay attention in class and you'll be fine. I don't always pay attention in class and I still have an A. I highly recommend Professor Buskirk. I can not say enough good things.
She is a good lecturer, but I found the textbook to be a good supplement to the material to gain a better and clearer understanding. Discussion sessions are particularly helpful because the focus emphasizes the topics that will be tested. Tests are multiple choice and free response and fairly direct and easy.
The tests are tough, but she's very passionate about what she teaches.
Buskirk's lectures are always and interesting and make sense. She has "objectives" that she hands out for each section that are helpful when studying for the exams. The exams are MC and short answer and although they're not that difficult, the MC can be VERY tricky. Uses tophat for answering questions in class and overall great prof.
Such a sweet lady, and really knows her stuff. 10-question homework on canvas once a week, and tophat questions in class. Tests can be tricky if you only have a shallow understanding of the material. If you really pay attention in lecture and take good notes, an A is definitely achievable.
Buskirk taught class in an engaging and motivating way! Tests are MC and free response, not too difficult if you do the issued learning objectives for the unit. Overall, a great prof!
Dr. Buskirk is one of the best BIO professors at UT; she's caring, very knowledgeable and has been teaching this course for years. Lectures can be heavy with content so don't miss if you don't have to; textbook reading wasn't required but don't know how you could do well without doing the reading. Three midterms, cumulative final, & weekly HW.
A energetic and happy lecturer that truly cares for your understanding. Minimal to no curving available. Very small extra credit opportunity for 2nd test due to poor class averages. Tests are difficult and are the cornerstone to your grade. Truly requires work for an A, A- is easily doable. Textbook reading really helped me to prepare for tests.
Dr. Buskirk is one of the best intro Bio professors! She makes sure that the material is understood in lecture and gives minimal homework. Each lecture you get a handout with key slides from the PP as well as Learning Objectives that should be learned. She also has recommended reading from the textbook. I never read the textbook and got an A still.
Dr. Buskirk is an incredible lecturer. She has a great way of explaining the material, and she provides several study sheet per unit. It's obvious that she loves biology and loves teaching. I'm actively trying to transfer into her 311D class next semester. Buskirk is the best intro professor. Take her class.
I struggled with her tests in the beginning of the course. Not going to lie, her tests are difficult and I did not do well on the first two. I finally pulled it together for the last test and the final because I went to her office hours almost every single day. She was helpful at explaining concepts I was confused about and she really cares.
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing professor! She goes into depth into some concepts, so you don't just have a basic understanding of the material. Her tests were difficult in my opinion, but homework and discussion grades brought my average up by a letter grade. Definitely take her if you have the chance!
Buskirk is a sweet old lady that loves her subject. I've had her for both 311C and 311D and really enjoyed her class. She cares about students, especially if you go to her office hours. There's I-clickers for in-class credit, which is easy. Her tests can be a little difficult, but go over her learning objectives and old tests and you'll do well.
I took her for both 311C and 311D. She's a great, nice prof. I don't think you can get much better from here. Her lectures can be structured better, but it is clear enough for you to do well if you put in the effort. Her learning objectives are the most important part of the class. Honestly, I think she's your best choice for intro bio.
Absolutely have loved every interaction and lecture from Dr. Buskirk. She is a model professor and will truly integrate you into the field of biology and the culture of UT. Not only acting as a confidant, Dr. Buskirk's course is easy to digest, but to be successful you definitely have to work for the grade and internalize the lecture materials.
Bio311D sucks regardless, and all the professors are pretty cruddy.. Buskirk is a nice lady, but she speaks so fast and will have you scrambling to write notes! Super great lady, but REALLY REALLY hard exams. If you are a Pre-Med student Beware!!
Dr. Buskirk is a very sweet woman who cares about both biology and her students. Her lectures are entertaining and there are often in class activities to keep you interested that are relevant to the real world. There are iClicker questions or a worksheet done in class for attendance. Discussion takes attendance. Tests are not freebies.
I thought Dr. Buskirk was a really great professor! She's really sweet and her lectures are always relevant. Her tests are hard but these reviews are misleading- there is hope! If you study a specific way (read and take concise notes on the textbook, review her powerpoints, and do her LOs) you'll be golden for her exams I promise.
Great professor, clearly passionate about the subject and knowledgable. Lectures are super important and relevant for examples and what to study. Tests are consistently hard; they always require a deeper understanding of the material, especially knowing applications and thinking critically.
Great professor, make sure you take notes and read the textbook. The class is very test heavy with your test average essentially determining your grade. She does have some tricky questions on the test but not as bad as other biology professors. Take advantage of the learning objective sheets she hands out.
Dr. Buskirk is so caring and funny and above all very knowledgable of her field. You have to go to lecture, but most of the test questions come from the homeworks so study those. Read the textbook it helps. Some tests were poorly worded, but other than that the class is an easy A.
Honestly, you could get an A if you just answered her learning objectives and slept through lectures, which I did. Buskirk's tests can be very hard with questions that seem to provide two or more correct answers. She may be a tough grader but she is very helpful in office hours and cares about your success if you participate. she is best UTbio prof
I LOVE THIS PROF! Dr. Buskirk was actually an amazing teacher, and she really cared about the info she taught and her students (as professors should). Unlike most, Dr. Buskirk's main focus was teaching and not research, so she did a fantastic job at it! I recommend going to her office hours with all questions. Lucky to have gotten this class!
Phenomenal professor but a very difficult course. She is a very caring and compassionate professor who really wants you to work hard for your grade. If you do not do well on one exam it can hurt your grade tremendously. She is very willing to help her students understand concepts but very rarely alters grades on exams or homework assignments.
Dr. Buskirk is such a sweet person and super smart teacher. Her lectures can veer into off-topic subjects but it's always very interesting. You can tell she's genuinely excited about her class and that she really does care about her students. Exams are not hard if you go to class and discussion sessions. Her TA Emily is awesome too!
The best educator I have ever had. She genuinely cares about her job and her students so much. She has office hours practically every day. She makes exceptions when students are in difficult situations. She knows almost everything there is to know about biology and that is evident in her amazing ability to communicate it. If you can, take her.
The class itself is pretty easy, doesn't have a lot of homework, and she clearly states what "learning objectives" she wants you to know, but her tests are still fairly difficult. My roommate missed a lot of lectures and was struggling when the exam came around. Also, the discussion sessions with the TA help a lot (if you have a good TA).
While some could get by without the textbook, I'd say it really helps supplement what she says in lecture. Her tests are very in-depth and require lots of knowledge about processes and structures. There are a ton of office hours (TA and professor) available and they are VERY helpful.
Very inspirational and loves to teach.
Dr. Buskirk is great! It's obvious she loves Biology and wants you to succeed in her class. Clicker questions in class tend to show up on exams and collaborative reviews sent out by her really prepare you.
Great professor! She really does like what she teaches and she's a great lecturer. She does a good job of explaining the concepts but the book does provide a more in-depth explanation. The clicker questions are annoying but some do come up on the exam. The exams themselves are really good study material for the final :)
Love Dr. Buskirk! She's great at what she does and it's evident how much she loves Biology. I didn't read the book at all and still did fine. Clicker questions in class tend to be old test questions and show up again. Q+A sessions before each test help a lot.
Dr. Buskirk is by far one of the best professors Ive had! She genuinely loves biology and she gets so excited teaching it. She cares for her students and shes always available to answer questions. The exams were fairly difficult; you have to read the book and deeply understand the learning objectives to do well. Overall, I learned a lot!
I loved this class! For someone who isn't particularly interested in the topics covered in 311D, Buskirk definitely made the class enjoyable. She's super sweet and extremely approachable outside of class.
Dr. Buskirk is so nice! She really cares for her students and takes any feedback seriously and it shows in her teaching. She explains concepts clearly and concisely and teaches what she wants you to know and nothing more. Go to class and you'll be fine (it's a part of your grade).
Dr. Buskirk is the reason I am a biology major today. She's super sweet and is clearly really interested about the topics that she is teaching. I personally think that she is the best professor that teachs BIO 311C and BIO 311D. She is clear in her lectures about what she wants you to know and her TAs are really good at preparing your for the exams
Dr. Buskirk is incredibly kind and clearly cares deeply about both biology and her students. This class had three fairly straightforward tests based on the lectures and two relatively simple essays. She is always available to help you review the material outside of class, and she takes her student on a great field trip to Pedernales Falls!
As a freshman, I needed a professor like Dr. Buskirk to show me WHY I chose my major and that not all things come easy. She goes in depth about her topics and really creates a story with a timeline about biology. The subject has never made more sense! Listen in class and attend office hours!
Dr. Buskirk is a REASONABLE professor: her tests aren't hard if you pay attention to her lectures (which is very interesting, the first I've said of any Bio professors), her handouts (SUPER helpful, has learning objectives and some highlights of lectures/themes), or if you put in the effort to see her in office hours. Great class, highly recommend!
Buskirk is an INCREDIBLE prof who really cares about her student. She absolutely bent over backward for me when my backpack was stolen (along with all my notes for her class). Her class is tough and you have to be a good note-taker to succeed, with most of the information not included on the powerpoints posted.
The intro to advanced biology was a good class. Dr. Payne co-teaches with Dr. Buskirk. The tests are all free-response but they're an hour long and it actually helps your grade. Never got lower than a B+. Buskirk can get kind of confusing in lecture but is ALWAYS available for office hours and will be glad to clarify. overall, great class
Dr. Buskirk gives amazing and interesting lectures. She made the course fun! However, her tests are very detailed, frustrating, and tricky. She expects you to think a certain way. There will always be a hard choice between two good sounding answers choices on her tests, which is an easy way to lose points. Nonetheless, she's a great professor!
Dr. buskirk is the best professor Ive had. Im not even a CNS major and I still take her class! She makes lectures worth your time. I personally never read the book in either of her courses and I made As in both of them. She is very caring and has the most OH Ive seen. Go to OH and reviews very helpful! Tests can be tricky, but think simply
Dr. Buskirk is such a sweetheart and her class is packed with information! I had her for both BIO 311C and BIO 311D and I liked the continuity between the classes. Her tests are difficult as she expects you to understand the material in a specific way, and they are also worth a large percentage of your grade. She's very helpful in office hours!
Buskirk is so very sweet. She's also a bit lecture heavy -- that's all the important info -- but she also reinforces with activities/application when possible. Great professor overall. Perhaps a more lenient grader than you'll see with Payne. Test questions are quite clear and efficient, but still employ application more than anything else.
Dr. Buskirk is the best professor I've had at UT so far - her lectures are amazing! Exams are very lecture heavy too, so don't skip class! Discussion activities are helpful to understand the application aspect of the course and provide good practice for the exam free response. I sometimes skimmed the textbook sections over areas I was confused on.
I had Professor Buskrik for both 311C and 311D. She truly loves what she teaches and really wants her students to succeed. Her exams can be really hard but you can do well if you study the in-class questions, homework, discussion questions, and the learning objectives. She keeps you engaged in lectures and overall her class is worth taking.
Test/lecture heavy. Textbook helpful when we had in-person classes, but useless after corona. LOs are very important when studying. Exams sucked bc I second guessed too much, so trust your intuition. Go to OH! Disc sec didn't help me much. She's a great explainer and provides extra credit. In comparison to other bio profs, she's just ok-not super.
Very straight forward. Just attend class, actually pay attention, and go over her learning objectives and you'll be set. Don't be afraid to ask questions! Her teacher assistants are super helpful. Wording on exams can be a bit odd sometimes, but she will void the question if it's truly misleading. She has a high rating for a reason. Take her!
Dr. Buskirk is a sweet lady and I preferred her to Dr. Payne. Sadly the class structure itself did not lend well to my own learning style and thus I did not perform as well as I expected. She would often misspeak in lecture but if you asked clarifying questions the issues could be resolved. Overall I hated the course, but Dr. Buskirk was alright.
You can tell she really loves what she is teaching and it makes you more excited to learn as well. She is so sweet and understanding if you have any personal issues come up and have to reschedule a quiz. There is a quiz every 2 weeks which is nice because it isn't much material to study, so it's easier. No tests. Weekly hwk, & reflection.
Professor Buskirk is literally the BEST professor ever! Not only is she super passionate about Biology, but she is also super sweet and gracious! She is also very accessible outside of class and does a great job at explaining concepts. I never found the quizzes exceptionally difficult, just make sure you study all the lecture and HW questions :)
Dr. Buskirk is an angel. She really cares that you learn Biology and will sit down and help you if you don't understand a topic. Her lectures were entertaining and kept you focused on the material. One of my best professors by far. If you have the chance to take her, TAKE HER.
Sweet and caring, and makes it super clear what she expects you to know. Be sure to attend lectures and discussion (participation is graded). Quizzes are not that hard, just study homework and polling questions, as well as the learning objectives. Textbook is "required" but not all that important. She really wants her students to learn and succeed
I liked Prof. Buskirk but I didn't love her, her teaching just didn't seem to work for me/I wasn't catching onto the material like other students. The lectures were really hard for me to focus on bc it felt like she was talking AT me not TO me and goes through the slides pretty fast while adding more content on the topic with what she says.
Professor Buskirk is the sweetest professor I have ever had. She is so funny and she really cares about her student. It might seems like a lot of work but as long as you show up to her class and pay attention and do the homework, it's an easy A. You learn and you get good grades!
Professor Buskirk is THE BEST PROF ever! I wish she taught every science class I have to take for my major - she's literally so sweet, and really cares about us. She is. super knowledgeable and makes her quizzes in a way that really reflects your understanding of the material. I genuinely looked forward to her class everyday - TAKE BUSKIRK!!
She's so nice. I've never had such a caring teacher. She's very clear about what she wants you to know for the quiz and always gives the student the benefit of the doubt. She clearly loves what she teaches (even if she's a bit corny at times). She's what a professor should be! I'm not sure how you could do poorly in this class if you really tried.
Extremely accommodating during Covid and the Winter Storm! Knowledgeable, fun and caring professor who wants her students to succeed. Her expectations for assignments and quizzes are clear cut. Fosters a group-work environment. The lectures cover 99% of what you will be assessed on, plus some supplemental readings. TA Raaj was also a gem!
Cannot say enough good things about Dr. Buskirk's class!! If you can get into her class, DO IT! Not very hard at all if you pay attention, her lectures and homework are very similar to quizzes and if you put in some effort you will be more than fine. She's the sweetest and you can tell she loves what she teaches. TAKE HER!!!!
Probably the BEST professor I've had so far! Lectures are interesting & engaging, make sure to take notes w the slides!!! She is great at explaining in-depth topics as well as answering every question. Quizzes/hw are straightforward but detailed with mult choice & free response. Dr. Buskirk is a lovely person and is very knowledgeable in biology!
Dr. Buskirk has been my favorite professor at UT; she has taught me more biology than my Bio 311C professor ever did. She covers everything that is in her homework and quizzes and explains them so well that even if you had no prior biology knowledge, you'd still understand it. A lot of her quiz questions are also on her lecture slides!
Dr. Buskirk was one of the best professors I've ever had. You can tell how much she genuinely cares for her students. Her lectures are super engaging and as long as you pay attention in class and make use of the resources she gives you, you'll pass with flying colors. LOVE HER!
Dr. Buskirk is a GEM of a professor. If you're like me and think you suck at science, take Dr. B! She's patient, kind, and understanding. Go to class, take good notes, and you will do well in the exams. Exams for the most part come straight from her lectures but the textbook does help a bit. She is genuinely interested in helping you succeed!
Dr. Buskirk has been one of my favorite professors so far at UT. She is engaging in her lectures and clearly has a passion to teach this material. I cannot say enough great things about her class. Her quizzes accurately reflect what is taught in class and she goes above and beyond to help you review the material. Get her as your teacher!
Literally the best bio professor ever. Her class is an easy A if you pay attention to lectures - you don't even need to bother reading the textbook. The quizzes are honestly super easy if you go to all the lectures and review the LOs and polling questions/HWs. Lots of test questions come from those! She's super sweet and caring!
Dr. Buskirk is definitely the best. The quizzes are quite easy if you review the lectures and the LOs. The other assignments are quite easy. The professor is so nice and so accommodating. Make sure to take her if you can.
Make sure you attend class so you can do the polls! Fair amounts of quizzes so no big tests to study for except the final quiz. She is the sweetest prof I have had so far and there are tons of opportunities for extra credit! Highly recommend taking her class if you have the chance! Use the collaborative google docs to study and you'll be fine
Dr. Buskirk has been my favorite professor at UT. She managed to teach me all the content from Bio 311c that I didn't understand (because I got a famously disliked professor) and her lectures were very interesting, even though I'm not a biology major. The atmosphere in this class is amazing, and homework is collaborative!
Dr. Buskirk was my fav prof! Had her for 311C and 311D. As long as you show up to lecture and pay attention, you'll do fine. Textbook is "required", but most people never used it and all material you need to know will be covered during class. She makes it very clear what she expects you to know for quizzes and reuses homework/polling questions.
Dr. Buskirk is so passionate about teaching, and her loving, caring nature really shows through every moment you interact with her. Definitely don't be afraid to ask her ANY questions you have, she will address all your inquiries and love to talk about new scientific tech with you. Her quizzes during COVID are not bad, pay attention in class!
I reviewed Dr. Buskirk for 311C and am so happy I get to so again. She really is one of the best teachers at UT and really does care for all of her students.
PLEASE take Buskirk is possible! She has been my favorite professor for my entire freshman year. I cannot imagine taking another biology professor (except for Dr. Latham haha). Dr. Buskirk was very lecture heavy and this was where she derived her exam material (and homework and discussion sections). She makes lectures really fun and interesting!
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing human being. She is so incredibly passionate about biology and genuinely wants you to learn! She is very accessible and always available for questions! If you have the opportunity, take her - you will not regret it!
Prof Buskirk is so sweet and enthusiastic about her subject and grades extremely leniently. I absolutely recommend this class with her particularly for Plan II majors. There are three exams that she grades leniently, two easy reports, and one very fun field trip to look at flowers and ants. Participation can be made up if you miss class. Loved her!
Buskirk is a solid choice for Bio. Very sweet lady, always seemed to care about student opinions and feedback. Class was very lecture heavy, which I personally didn't love the structure of, but she always provided good review material and was clear on what to know for exams. Overall a good choice.
Professor Buskirk is an amazing lecturer. She's great at connecting topics together, and likes to use real life examples of what she's talking about, which makes her lectures super interesting. Her tests and assignments are fairly easy as long as you go to class.
This is UT science so of course it's not a walk in the park, but Buskirk is amazing! You're never tested over anything that she doesn't cover in lectures and she posts learning objectives so you always know how prepared you are for the exams. I'm usually able to accurately predict my score before I even see the tests (which are always very fair).
Dr. Buskirk is probably the best professor I've had at UT so far. She genuinely cares about her students and wants all of us to do our best. Her lectures were amazing and covered all of the material for her tests and quizzes. It is definitely manageable to get an A in this class with some hard work and effort.
Buskirk genuinely cares for her students and strives to help them get an A. Her lectures are very thorough and she's available for office hours to explain material into further detail. The discussion sections were very helpful to make sure to understand the week's material and the TAs were wonderful in helping explain the material in office hours!
Dr. Buskirk is amazing! She's been super caring and flexible this semester. You can tell she genuinely wants the best for all of her students and is understanding of what they're going through. Her exams are straightforward and fairly simple. Don't buy the textbook; exam and homework questions are directly from lectures. Def recommend taking her!!
Professor Buskirk is awesome, I can feel she really cared about her students, and she is truly so passionate about the stuff she teaches. The TAs we had were also extremely knowledgeable and attentive. Tests were the easiest, you may find yourself studying a lot for it, but they are totally doable.
It is so clear that Dr. Buskirk cares about her students. You can tell that she knows what she's talking about and is passionate about it too. She is enthusiastic to answer questions and wants to help you understand. Tests were fair given the content, and she gives you all the material needed to get an A.
Buskirk is an AMAZING professor for intro bio. I'm taking her for BIO311D rn. Slots run out, so register for her fast! Very understanding, and makes you feel comfortable to ask questions even though they may sound dumb. Go to office hours. The textbook is required but we don't use it much.
-Super sweet /accommodating. Very passionate about Bio -Although she says the textbook is required, she never assigns anything from it and I hardly ever used it - it's a good resource to refer to if you're unsure over anything. -Assigns 1 MCQ HW per week- takes less than 20 mins. -Posts learning objectives per unit (youre chillin if u study them)
dr. buskirk makes biology very easy to understand! she says the textbook is required but i learned entirely off the lectures. make sure to study the learning objectives, homework questions, discussion questions, & instapoll questions. i couldve made an A, but i was a slacker and didnt go to discussions so make sure to go to those for the grade!
Absolutely loved having Buskirk. She is so sweet and you can tell she really has a passion for biology and for teaching. She also gives learning objectives for each unit that you go over mostly in class so as long as you know those, youll do good on the exams. Also she bumped my B- up to a B bc of participation. great class and great professor!!
Professor Buskirk was an amazing teacher and she was especially understanding with the whole COVID thing. Her lectures do move kind of slow so you have to try not to zone out, but the tests were pretty easy and lecture based and there’s no mandatory textbook readings, only suggested ones.
Buskirk is a great professor who cares about her students. Lecture participation is the way to do well in this class because of Instapolls and the material you learn. I would warn that her online tests in spring semester are more difficult than her in-person exams, but she is the best choice for BIO 311C/D! Definitely possible to get an A :)
As someone who hates biology, Buskirk made this class extremely bearable. If you have the chance to take her for bio, do it!! As someone who has always performed less than spectacular in science courses, her teaching has helped me secure an A- in both classes I've taken that were taught by her.
Dr. Buskirk is the sweetest. Her lectures cover everything and you do not even need the textbook. She posts learning objectives for each unit that cover everything you need to know for the exams. She only assigns 1 HW per week which takes around 10 mins to do. Her tests are very fair. Please take if you want a stress free experience in bio!!
Dr. Buskirk is the sweetest and really cares about her students and you can tell she loves teaching. There are 4 exams based on the learning objectives she gives you about a week in advance. There are small group projects, but I'm pretty sure they are completion. Homework is very short and you have the key when you're doing it.
Super passionate about biology! She is an amazing professor and her tests are always fair.
Dr. Buskirk is the best professor I've had! She gives engaging, effective lectures, organizes her course in a very clear way (outlining the learning objectives & sticking to them on tests), holds many office hours, values student feedback, & cares for every pupil. Her course gave me a thorough intro to bio and I'm so glad she was my instructor.
Really good lecturer, super knowledgeable about everything she teaches. Her grading system is a bit odd and stressful for me, but other than that, wonderful class
Honestly lucked out in getting Buskirk for 311C. I've heard horror stories from kids with the course that had diff professors. She's super chill on homework (there's barely any) and the tests are legit not hard. Super lecture based tests and I studied for them all the night before and did fine. Got a 100 on the final easily - def great take her
She is such a caring professor and very understanding. I had a family conflict and she was quick to respond and offer opportunities to make up participation. Participation is required, but honestly if you attend the lectures you won't need to read the textbook. Her tests are fair and she has a list of required concepts.
If you are a freshman taking bio 311c, do all that you can to get Dr.Buskirk. She is absolutely amazing and all you have to do is pay attention to lectures to make a good grade on the exams. She explains so well during her office hours. No exaggeration.
Dr. Buskirk is such a slay. She explains concepts very clearly and makes biology easy to understand, especially if you haven't taken biology since freshman year of high school. Tests are very straightforward and she basically tells you everything you need to know in class. She's such a sweet lady and really cares about her students!!
Dr. Buskirk was an amazing choice for 311D (spring 2022), but don't let these reviews fool you -- the class is still challenging. Her tests were difficult in my opinion. Do the learning objectives as you go rather than cramming in last minute especially since there are about 50 of them per unit. Also, extra credit is rarely offered.
This professor is just the sweetest little lady. Her passion for the subject made it easy to follow along in the lectures.
Dr. Buskirk is an awesome professor - super knowledgeable and explains things in a way that makes them easier to understand. The class is pretty difficult and there's a lot of information you have to learn, but she gives a lot of opportunities to get help. Tests aren't too bad if you go to lectures and pay attention.
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing BIO311C prof and taught Biology in a way that makes sense. She's very clear on what she's testing you on and doing the learning outcomes help a ton. The exams were alright in terms of difficulty and the workload is pretty light too with only one homework assignment per week with an assignment discussion.
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing professor who conveys the material clearly and what she expects you to know during lectures. AP biology in high school was 10x harder than this class. She doesn't focus too much on minor details, and rather you know the big concepts. Also seems to care a lot about her students and wants everyone to succeed.
I like her interesting lectures. The recordings are very useful for reviewing. Her exams are easier than her lectures' content.
Dr. Buskirk was super sweet and helpful. Homework was light and the tests were very straightforward. Completing the learning outcomes, reviewing homework questions, and understanding lectures will set you up for success in this course.
THE BEST BIO PROF EVER!!!! like no joke. trust. I was a bio major and wanted to change my major but she makes bio so easy I stuck it out and I love it. Her lectures are super clear and discussion sections are helpful. She is so sweet literal angel. Tests are not THAT hard you just gotta study which is easy bc she posts a unit "study guide" (LOs).
Dr. Buskirk is the best! Her class is definitely rigorous and there's no chance for extra credit, but she provides all the resources to succeed. Office hours are frequent and she often adds more sessions (even on weekends) to help students during testing periods. I had Natalia & Carter as TAs and they were amazing. Exams are straight-forward.
The only negatives id say is when she gives the learning outcomes for each test, they're very general. And some tests are application based and some are just recall so make sure you are prepared to do both for all the exams. One great thing she does is average the first 3 test scores together and replaces the lowest exam score you have.
Professor Buskirk is amazing at being available and helping students understand concepts in the class well. It is a very test heavy class, but it is really easy to get a 100 on everything that is not an exam. Participation is mandatory for a good grade as it is counted in the grade.
She cares a lot about her students! Going to her office hours to ask questions was really helpful, and she would answer homework questions and clarify lecture material. There's a required textbook, but exams only go over lecture content. The exams are multiple-choice and some free response, and they are pretty do-able.
easiest bio prof at ut. tip- re-watch lectures at 2x while going thru ur class notes to ensure u didn't miss anything bc she can kinda talk fast. hw's are easy and tests aren't hard. she does have participation checks but they are open for a long time, also if u miss it she is rly accommodating abt making it up. she's super sweet take her!!!
I loved having Buskirk for BIO311C! She was very caring and offered as many office hours as she could, where she always ensured everyone there got their questions answered and explained in a very simple way that made the content much easier to grasp.
The sweetest professor I've had for my 1st year. BIO311D was harder than her BIO311C course, but as long as you pay attention in class, do the learning outcomes, and just try you'll get a good grade. Attendance isn't rlly "mandatory" she has attendance checks but they're for completion. She offers a textbook, but I didn't buy it.
Had Dr. Buskirk for BIO311C and 311D and managed to get an A in both. That being said - I did NOT do well on all of the tests. However, your grade is pretty cushioned by the homework/discussion assignments. Her lectures are great and the tests are fair. Would definitely recommend!
Professor Burskirk creates a great atmosphere to learn. She puts in a lot of effort for her students to feel as if they belong in class, and that they can do well. A fantastic professor to take for 311C.
i just love her sm. i had her for both 311C & 311D and am genuinely going to miss her class next year :( she was so sweet and her passion for the subject was so so evident. she has an insane ability of converting high school biology haters (me) into biology enjoyers lol. she also explained concepts so clearly i really cannot recommend enough
Took 311C & 311D w/Dr. Buskirk! This semester some of her tests had some confusing questions, but her class isn't completely defined by the tests, unlike others. Go to the Discussions, although they aren't 'mandatory' you get help on the assignments as there's no EC. Incredibly accessible outside of class, she even hosted OH at night before finals.
Really enjoyed this class, and would recommend her class to any pre-health students. The grade was mostly exams, but there was plenty of room for extra credit to help boost your grade if need be. The lectures could be a bit dry at times, but were overall interesting and showed Dr. Buskirk's passion for the subject.
Adored Buskirk. She was an amazing lecturer and person to interact with. Her exams are extremely lecture heavy. Occasionally, it was hard to fully understand certain concepts, but I highly recommend to go to Buskirk's own office hours as she's engaging and nice. Tip is to fully understand the in-class Instapolls to do well on exams.
love me some dr buskirk!! please take her class, tests are kinda hard but thats pretty standard for biology classes. her grading policies are over 40% attendance and participation so you can make a good grade in the class, and her lectures are super informative!! please take her, she is your best option out of the bio profs!
Dr. Buskirk clearly cares very much about students succeeding in her course and at UT in general. Reading was not necessary, but very helpful. She listens to students feedback and is willing to make changes to help students.
Dr. Buskirk is very caring, but her lectures are kind of boring. DO NOT TAKE HER EARLY CLASS! YOU WILL FALL ASLEEP. She is knowledgeable, but her tests and the general structure of her class are more difficult than other professors, that is the only reason I chose not to take her again. Also, my TA was horrible, so that could make a difference.
Honestly, all of these reviews regarding Dr. Buskirk's amazing character are correct. She is insanely caring and wants all of her students to succeed. That being said, this class is HARD. I got a 5 on AP Biology and I still failed the first 2 exams. She is a great person, but it is possible to study for weeks and still fail the tests.
Dr. Buskirk was very kind and accommodating. She had a very clear schedule for assignments and readings every week which was helpful. The discussion sections were not required but they went over assignments and provided mini reviews of the last few lectures. I found the exams doable, but not super easy. Use Learning outcomes for studying for exams.
Grade-wise it's an easy class. If anything, study the INSTAPOLL questions from class because a lot of them will show up on the test.
Dr. Buskirk provides a lot of resources for you to succeed. Her homework, instapoll, test reviews were all super helpful, but this class is hard!! As a future doctor (hopefully) I'd like to think that science is my strong suit. But I've gotten all the letter grades across my three midterms and had to work hard on my final for an A overall grade.
OMG. Literally one of the best profs I've ever had. What is there to say? Amazing personality. Amazing lectures. Genuinely cares about her students and her class is structured very fairly. Oh, and the field trips with her are a delight.
For people who are saying her class is "HARD" are not studying the right way. Shes been teaching for years n is very educated (Harvard alum) so her exams are perfected to be fair. Study hard for the exam: What helped was to rewatch all (i mean ALL) lectures for an exam n take notes correlating to her LOs. She's so nice n gives loving grandma vibes.
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing professor. Her class is not difficult at all IF you stay on top of studying and learning outcomes. Study hard for the tests (which are super fair) and youll get an A... lots of points come from non-exam easy assignments. Go to office hours and you'll ace the class.
I had Dr. Buskirk for both 311C and 311D and she was amazing. 311C is made so easy by taking her class, and if you stay on top of your material, it is one of the easier bio classes to get an A in.
Amazing professor! If you can take her, DEFINITELY go for it. Her tests are very similar to the Instapolls, HWs, and AEs, so if you study those, you will most likely get an A. She clearly cares for her students and wants them to succeed. Overall, awesome professor and great class!
Professor Buskirk explains biology concepts in a way that is clear and easy to understand. Likewise, her grading formula is fantastic! Although half our grades are exams, the other half are participation grades and easy homework assignments that make for a great cushion. The workload is very manageable and helps me to remember the material better.
I can not say enough how much i enjoyed this class. Professor Buskirk is not only a great lecturer, but it is so evident she cares about our success as she holds a VAST amount of office hours and is always willing to help her students. One of my favorite teachers/classes at UT so far! Tests are very fair and just don't slack off and you'll do great
Dr. Buskirk is AWESOME, my favorite professor I have had. Her lectures are engaging, and she records them and offers opportunities to make up the credit given for participation, although I would recommend attending lectures as they are very helpful. She is so caring and makes sure all of her students feel supported. Def take her if you can!
Dr. Buskirk is a solid professor. She is really sweet but sometimes rambles in lectures and doesn't go over important things. Tests are genuinely hit or miss. Free response section is usually kind of difficult. Possible to get an A but definitely need to put a good amount of effort into it
Dr. Buskirk is the best combination of mastering the content without tanking your grades. She genuinely cares about you as a person and wants you to succeed in all avenues. The tests are all fair and she provides practice through the HWs and AEs. Make sure to go to some mini field trips to see how she applies biology concepts to the real world.
A lot of the points come from homework that you can get full points on. Tests are straightforward if you study for it but sometimes the wording of questions trips people up. Buskirk is a good lecturer and it's pretty easy to get an A in the class.
I took her Fall 2023 and she is one of the best BIO professors at UT. Passing this class is easy as long as you do your part. She is very transparent about how the class is graded. The exams aren't terrible as long as you are keeping up with lectures, assignments, and discussions. She is a proactive professor and is very helpful during exam time.
I took Dr. Burskirk last semester as well for 311C and she has been an amazing professor. Her lectures are entertaining, she doesn't force you to come to class, her assignments are relatively easy, and the exams are fair. I really enjoyed being her student. I would 100000% recommend taking your intro bio classes with her!
Great prof. Exams were 60% of questions from homework or lecture. TAs and office hours help clear up concepts. 94 for an A does make it SLIGHTLY more difficult as it only leaves you 30 points of leeway between 3 midterms and a final (470+/500 for A). The lowest midterm gets dropped for the average of the 3.
AMAZING. such a sweet old lady, and loves her job and teaching. great lecturer. exams were not that bad if you studied for them! honestly was easier than AP Bio. instapolls every class, but you can make them up. lecture heavy but she posts them online! homework was a bit difficult but she gives you SO MANY resources for the tests = easy midterms
Professor Buskirk is an angel from the heavens above. Her class gave me so much confidence in my abilities as a student, and I walked away with such a strong understanding of bio. More than 50% of your grade is non-test material and the tests are extremely fair if you understood lecture. You would be insane not to take her.
Prof. Buskirk is an engaging lecturer with a genuine passion for teaching. The exams are fair if you stay on top of the material. Unstuckstudy was a great study resource alongside the lecture recordings. Overall, a manageable class for the credit.
Dr. Buskirk is actually the sweetest ever! She is passionate about bio and does a great job with lectures, making everything relatively easy to understand. She is super helpful and caring. Highly reccommend.
Dr. Buskirk was an amazing professor who provided me with an immense amount of insight into biology and science as a whole. Definitely take her class!
My appreciation for baddie buskirk has gone up SOO much since i took genetics; i miss her lecture style and just her whole format of the class so much. truly one of the best professors at UT.
Such a sweet lady, but just wasn't my preferred teaching style. She would often say random things in class that "weren't on the exam" but would be. In her lecture slides, she would often write questions that were important but never answer them. The exams are pretty difficult and the questions asked are always worded very hard to understand.
Such a sweet individual, but DOES NOT give extra credit. I found tests to be challenging and hard to study for. The best tip I can give is study the lecture slides and LEARNING OUTCOMES over and over till you can regurgitate them. The tests are fair, but worded strangely which is why they are hard. Lectures can be boring, but overall a good class.
Lectures were boring & her tests questions were worded weirdly & made to trick you. She's changed up so much this year, especially her final (which was EXTREMELY difficult). Doesn't believe in extra credit or curves, only thing that saved me was that her grading is 'cushioned' by other assignments. If you can, save your GPA & do partridge for 311C
For her test, she gives u 80 learning outcomes & only puts 20 on the test so u study useless stuff, overwhelming u with info you don't even need (She used to highlight important ones & now she doesn't) They're formatted as 24 MCQ's 6 FRQ's in 50 min, doesn't give extra credit or curve & her cutoff is a 94. so if you didn't take Bio AP, good luck
Buskirk is an amazing lecturer if you have an interest in biology! Her tests are difficult because of the sheer amount of content, but if you start studying early (and I mean eaaarrllyy) you'll be fine! Wording on tests is tricky but if you know the base idea you'll figure it out. Lots of other activities to cushion your grade.
Dr. Buskirk is such a sweet lady that truly cares about all of her students! Most lectures were well explained, but the tests do tend to go very in-depth so make sure to read the textbook and learning outcomes if you need help! She doesn't offer any extra credit, and the cutoff for an A is a 94, but tests are only 46%, which helps as a buffer!
I LOVE BUSKIRK SO MUCH!! if you want to do well in this class it's important to study, form a list of questions, and then go to her office hours. She genuinely wants you to succeed and find happiness in helping students do well. I formed a very positive relationship with her and I couldn't have asked for a better bio teacher.
Overall, Dr. Buskirk was a good professor. Her exams were a little hard, but as long as you do practice questions, focus on the learning outcomes, and GO TO class, you'll do fine in her class.
Overall, Dr. Buskirk was a good professor. Her exams were a little hard, but as long as you do practice questions, focus on the learning outcomes, and GO TO class, you'll do fine in her class!
BEST PROF EVER! Such a sweet lady with a lot of care for her students and their success! Homeworks are super easy and clear and lectures are well organized and well explained. Exams are super easy if you review lectures and pay attention in class. Genuinely such an easy class if you put in the slightest effort.
I loved Dr Buskirk and she made her class very manageable. She teaches bio well and her tests consist largely of MCQ and some fill in the blank/short answers. She wants everyone to succeed and structures the class as so. Definitely take her if you can she makes life so much easier than other professors in the Bio department.
I love her so much she is so adorable but she kind of expected you to already be a bio nerd and I hadn't touched it since freshman hs. Exams were very very hard. Don't just memorize go inside of a cell or something learn every little detail.
The best professor I ever had.
She's a sweet lady and a nice professor. Really attentive about student feedback and enjoyed her field trips.
screwed the whole class over with the final-- "reviewed" stuff that would be on the final, only for her to test content she didnt go over/ said wouldn't be on final. It takes a special type of person to make a final significantly more difficult than the midtemrs exams, knowing students will lose their letter grades they're upkept all semester.
Dr. Buskirk is such a kind human being who loves teaching and cares so much for her students. She is so knowledgeable and a source of information about anything biology. You can come up to her to ask about anything and she will remember you and even remember to ask you about your personal life. Best biology teacher ever!
sweet angel. So kind and caring and lovely. Reminds me of my mom. Passionate about the material and wants everyone to succeed :)
BUSKIRK IS THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD! I love this woman more than anything! Such an interesting lecturer, work is doable, and she genuinely cares about student success and understanding! Her jokes are funny and tests are easy if you attend/review lecture content. Fair grader with limited out of class assignments. Favorite prof at UT!
TEST ARE HEAVILY WEIGHTED. Utilize lectures online, lots of test questions come from things she says out loud. Use learning outcomes and AE/HW questions. Dr. Buskirk is very kind and obviously passionate about Biology. About to take my final, I have 100% on every section except for tests with 94.1 in the class. Need a 92 on the final to keep my A.
There is so much I could say about how amazing this course was! All I will say is take this course and treasure every second. This class extended my love for biology, the world, and being in college overall. Dr. Buskirk is angel, and if I could have her every semester for the rest of my degree I would!
I had Dr. Buskirk for BIO 311C and D (i'm a bio major). She is a great lecturer and cares about the success of her students. Go to lecture, do the instapolls, and study and success is possible. Grading scale is a little strict but very consistent. Test can be hard to get used to but all follow a similar format. Go to discussion and ask questions.
Not much leeway with getting an A, but very doable as long as you are a good test taker. Review everything she gives you, LO, HW, AE, Practice Quizzes, Instapol, etc. Lots of test will be pulled from those, and also applying the knowledge you learn. There will be a few tricky questions, but overall Buskirk really cares for you and is so sweet.
Buskirk is sweet but her grading scale is strict. Her exams test exactly what she says in lecture. I used to study hw's, AE's, instapolls and wrote the learning outcomes with AI (basing it on the slides) but I kept scoring 80–90. Don't chat the LOs. Rewatch lectures and use only those to fill out learning outcomes. Know her exact wording. Trust me
I enjoyed taking intro bio w Dr. Buskirk. She made clear what she wanted us to learn and taught us well. There is a textbook, which I read from before lectures, but it is not really needed to do well in the class. Instapolls keep u engaged and grading is clear. TA's were also very chill. She has office hours in her office and is super helpful.
Tests are everything. if u can't test take well don't bother taking her. the A cutoff is a 94 and she doesn't round at all. if u bomb even one test there's no way to recover.
She is such a nice woman, but grading is so strict. Her tests would have questions that you would only know if you attended lecture. Basically your whole grade is the tests, with no bonus or curve. I would do the learning outcomes and make sure to go to her office hours. You can tell she cares, but she is so set in her ways with grading.
Her lectures can be a bit hard to follow at times but she is super approachable for any questions that arise. Also does mini field trips throughout semester that are fun. Tests are pretty hard but she gives a ton of resources so they are manageable. Get ready to read and study!
Professor Buskirk is extremely passionate and sweet about this topic. She really tries to make you succeed and offers many practice questions to recall information actively. There are 3 midterms and one cumulative final. Tests are MCQ and FRQ and use similar or/same questions from Instapoll and discussions.
Buskirk is a good lecturer & a nice person in general; her tests are just weird. Tests rely on more of you figuring out how to answer her odd questions compared to you applying the material that you learned from her slides & the class. No extra credit at all either.
good lecturer + passionate about biology but grade is almost fully dependent on exam scores and her cutoff for an A is higher than most other professors. offers no extra credit and tests were often difficult + oddly worded
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing professor. Her lectures are engaging and well-organized. Additionally, the grading system is very forgiving.
This is my second semester taking Buskirk, but I personally enjoyed 311C more than 311D. She is an amazing lecturer (you don't really need the textbook), but some of her test questions were quite confusing! However, her grading system is pretty nice, and she offers many resources to learn the content! Make sure to study the LOs and her slides!
Spring 2025, She is truly a caring and inspirational professor! She offers many extra credit opportunities and takes advantage of office hours and mini field trips that are planned. She cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Tests are kind of difficult, but can be easy if you just study and focus on the topics you are struggling with.
She lectures well, and class was interesting. Exams were extremely challenging, though, and seemed irrelevant to what was taught in lecture (questions were worded weird too). I rewatched all lectures, took detailed notes, and went to some of her office hours, yet her exams were still tricky. A very confusing course to say the least!
Great professor and genuinely cares for your learning, and her lectures were very fun to attend. Instapol's carry hard on the tests and make sure you review discussions. Though the test will have random curve balls that truly test your ability to "apply knowledge", and there isn't a lot of room for error to get an A in the class.
Dr. Buskirk is an incredible professor and a gem of UT. She is incredibly inspirational and respected in her field, but made her class very approachable and doable even for "not the best" bio students. I went into her class with no AP bio but have kept a high A all semester. She wants you to succeed and it shows. Take her class if you can!
I think she's a good lecturer, but the way her tests were spread out made it that our last exam covered over a month of content. This made this exam very difficult. Her content and slides are great, but they are not enough to get an A on her tests. I found her tests to be confusing, detailed, and hard.
Her lectures are amazing, definitely try to attend every class if you can. Exams are difficult but manageable. She doesn't really do extra credit, so exams are weighted heavy. She's also really sweet to talk to, I wish I went to her office hours more often. She has so many drop-ins if you need help and her TAs are very helpful.
BUSKIRK IS THE GOATTT literally the best bio prof at UT Austin, she cares so much about her students and is super approachable and friendly. she wore a mustache to class once. personally i didn't find her tests overly challenging, just show up to class and do your homework on time and you're set. actually the sweetest woman ever and best prof 10/10
Amazing lecturer! Many practice questions throughout the lecture + canvas assignments throughout the week similar to exam questions. Pay attention during lectures then take notes after class. For exams, do the exam practice on canvas and answer learning outcomes. Textbook is unnecessary. Easy to follow along, JUST DON'T PROCRASTINATE!
loved this class!
Dr. Buskirk is an amazing professor! Her lectures are very engaging and helped me understand bio well. She provides many practice problems both in & outside class, which help prep for exams. Be sure to pay attention and study well for exams, as they are worth 80% of the course grade (and can be tricky if you don't understand concepts well enough)!
Buskirk lectures are known for being pointless yet required while her tests simply have nothing to do with what she discusses
Do not take, she shamelessly adds random scenarios into the tests that she doesn't go over and expects you to have lottery-winning luck to guess them. Nice lady though.
Very tangential lectures with no clear objectives
Dr. Buskirk is an incredibly sweet lady! As someone who didn't take AP Biology in high school, this class felt straightforward. Instapolls, Homeworks, and Apply Extend assignments were all fairly easy and she never assigned too much reading. Her exams are sometimes worded poorly, but are similar to lecture questions. If you can, take 311C with her!
Test heavy
I haven't taken biology since 9th grade and I couldn't have asked for a better professor to ease me into college coursework. Dr. Buskirk is maybe the most fair intro bio professor in terms of what she expects you to know and she's super accessible with office hours. Many exam questions are essentially variations of homework / Instapoll questions.
Lectures feel pointless because the slides are only unanswered learning objectives, leaving students to learn everything on their own outside class. Little of the lecture content appears on exams, and many test questions are poorly worded “select all that apply,” making assessments confusing and frustrating. No point in attending lecture tbh.
Thoroughly explains all the content you need for exams in her lectures; only exam prep you need is to just take notes on what she says in lecture in relation to LOs. Textbook is ‘required' but I never used it / readings overcomplicate things that would not be tested on. Lots of exam questions are just repeat instapoll / homework questions.
Great professor and deeply engaging lectures, however, exams are quite difficult and worded strangely. The final was more difficult than the midterm exams, causing some to lose the letter grades they held all semester.
Dr. Buskirk is extremely knowledgeable and kind. She offers many office hours and is always willing to help. However, the exams are extremely difficult and unfair due to tricky wording, content not covered in class, and limited questions, leaving very little room for error. The course is heavily exam-based, with no drops or extra credit.
A lot of the chemistry stuff is covered pretty quickly, and if you haven't taken AP chem or AP bio, it's important that you review it before the tests. You only need to study the LO's, instapolls, and hw's that she gives out. There are a lot of repeat questions and certain LO's will be heavily tested!!!
Tricky wording on tests, read it carefully or you'll end up missing questions. There is content tested that is not included in reviews. However she explains topics really well and assignments are easy. Memorize Instapolls and HW for test and final because they show up. No need to get textbook.
