very organized, systematic, well prepared, great prof!
Can't ask for a better prof!
very organized and clear teaching...
Change the content of 397, it's too similar to 297 and it's useless
No Comments
very organized... very by the book... doesn't challenge the students
Wonderful
Very clear...also very fair to upper finance classes (high class average)
Excellent prof; very well organized lectures; willing to help out.
very organize and prepare students well

A little to anal with the notes for my liking
Overall an effective teacher, though her teaching is a bit, dull.

She makes sure you understand the course material
Makes course material easy to understand and interesting.
Very clear and helpful notes. Just read the notes, and you are prepared for the exam....her notes are very self-explanatory. U can still get a high mark without reading the book~~~
Very good teacher. Great notes, always prepared, extremely organized. One bad thing - anal about latecomers.
She's extremely clear and prepared. Lectures can go fast at times, but they're still acceptable. She does seem impatient at times when students go and seek help. Overall, a terrific prof!
Went over what we needed to know and gives real life applications so people into Finance should find class interesting. Can talk too fast though and yery picky in marking short answer questions. Each essay question can be up to 10% of the exam and she marks all or nothing.
Great prof.! Lectures are very clear and easy to understand. She's probably the best finance prof. in ubc.
One of the better finance profs. No BS, just covers the stuff you need to know and spices it up a little with real world examples. And the class is easy, so I definitely recommend.
Very clear and effective lectures & to-the-point. Should checkout her credentials, you'd be amazed and surprised. Her knowledge, while great, can be slightly more academic than what undergrads will ever need. We can benefit with more practical examples -- which she does give. Overall, very good!
Very good and clear notes. Lectures were effective though her voice can be quite boring sometimes. She went over everything that we needed for exams. As mentioned before, she can be impatient during office hours.
her notes are very simple, clear and easy to understand. creates interest in subject and simplifies the most complicated ideas into extremely easy to understand material...very very good prof!
Great Prof. Better than profs of different sections.
Very good finance prof(she's very knowledgeable). Great notes and lectures. Definitely recommended!!
EXCELLENT - surprised she's not the Dean.
Had her for 297. Highly effective in communicating ideas. Very intelligient. Although it is difficult to imagine, but she does sincerely care for students' academic and career success. DON'T EVER be late for her class. Her stare will kill you! I'd love to take more finance courses with her.
For 397 she was far better than Graham who I had for 297. Freedman has extremely clear notes, all you need, everything is very straight-forward. Exams fair. Only complaint is that she can appear angry sometimes when you ask questions, very angry.
1 of the best profs ever in Sauder. Organized notes and prepares students well for exams. Responsible. She could get angry at times, but that's b/c ppl don't know what they're asking or they haven't paid enough attn in class. Ppl should arrive early for Ruth's cool lectures.
one of the best profs at sauder. very organized and neat notes. very clear at explaining concepts. i would say she's better than Graham at teaching.
Horrible teacher gives way too many notes. Way too hard to understand when your taking 7-8 pages of notes per class. Very dry lectures, anal prof.
NEVER BE LATE FOR HER CLASS. DON'T ASK STUPID QUESTIONS IN HER OFFICE HOURS. SHE WILL STARE YOU DOWN.
Very clear and organized lectures. Do all the practice problems (there aren't many) and you will do fine in this class.
She's a pretty good professor. Very organized and extremely clear on what's important and what will be tested. But Holy-**** does she take her job too seriously.
Had Professor Freedman for three consecutive years (i.e. 297, 397, 475). She is arguably the best finance prof in UBC in terms of fairness, clarity and helpfulness. 475 is a hard course by itself but she made it simplier to understand. Exams are very fair. Note - she sticks to her rules to the word; i.e., disputing with her over exams is futile.
If you are a serious student who actually wants to study and learn something about finance, Ruth Freedman is great. If you're just in Commerce to party and fool around, you will not enjoy her class. Her course requires a fair amount of studying and preparation, but if you put in the time you will get a good mark. If you don't, you'll get a bad mark
One super anal prof. She is really anal about section switching and lectured us many times on it - even brought in the assistant dean to talk to us about it. Won't post notes online - anal about that as well. Also will stare you down if you ask a "stupid" question. Actually, she will stare you down for anything. Like I said: ANAL.
Haven't teach this course for 10 years. Wrote a midterm too hard for us and then blame us all for receiving low class average. AVOID.
She is an awesome prof. Extremely helpful and serious, and just wants to make sure that she is teaching the class for a reason, so that we can learn. She is not there to be our friend. If you can't take the class seriously, you shouldn't be taking it.
The worst commerce prof I have ever had. Not only is she ridiculously anal she is a **** who really doesnt care about her students. If you ask a questions she will FREAK out and huff and puff about it then give you evil stares all class. The tests are a million times harder than anything you do in class. She is awful defiantely AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
Avoid her eyes. They make you freeze like Medussa's. Indirect contact AT ALL COSTS. I wonder why I still attended her class after all the excruciating days of sitting through her lectures. Wouldn't upload notes to the internet. UBC should consider firing Medussa.
She gives really good and clear notes. Just read your notes and you will do fine.
lectures are clear and understandable. if you want a good grade, take her class. but her as a person - very demanding. BIG DEAL - it's a college..people are always late for class. yes, and a bit condescending. she panics way too often
I don't think Ruth is condescending, as opposed to the previous posters. However, she panics and rushes through the lectures sometimes. Overall, very effective in getting the theories across for an easy couse.
ruth DOES know everything. all her teaching and notes are clear and to the point and make perfect sense...however, it comes with the challenge of staying awake...( but thats probably largely due to the course ). i recommend her, she knows her stuff.
Easy to follow!
AWFUL! I was going into Finance until Ruth taught me this course. So boring, so useless, doesn't help anyone learn anything. Can't answer questions, will panic. Brian Graham's class automatically have an advantage on exams. Don't take Ruth, you won't learn anything, and I got an A.
I agree, Ruth panics like there's no tomorrow, but she's a great teacher. She explains concepts very thoroughly and clearly. She's definitely one of the better finance teacher. Btw, the guy below that said he had an A is full of it because our final occurred on April 27th and he posted on the 25th! LOL.
Not good. She is clearly an academic, without any real world experience. Never once mentioned any current events or the stock market. In a Finance class... Drones on in that annoying voice about formulas you will never use. PS Brian Graham writes the final, take him.
The purpose of 298 is to learn basic finance theory, and Ruth teaches accordingly. No, she doesn't apply much current/real examples, but that's not the point of the course. She's overly concerned about people being late, which can be distracting, and can be boring (course content partly responsible for thise. Graham is better, but Ruth is fine.
Although she may not be the most interesting prof, Ruth is an effective teacher and has excellent notes. I learned the material from her well, which sets a strong base for learning in other finance courses. She's there to help you understand and if you are really interested in finance, you should be reading about it on your own anyways.
I took both 298 and 370 from Ruth. Her notes are excellent, and her lectures are focused on making the material as clear as possible. She's the best finance professor I've had.
Shes super nice. Notes are extremely clear and super helpful. I'd rather take her than Brian, and best of all, she's easy on the eyes =].
Ruth is ONLY professor to take for those serious about taking finance. Her notes are crystal clear (as long as you write them down) and her lectures are detailed without being boring. She is exactly what a University Professor should be. She may seem intimidating at times, but she is VERY approachable and helpful during office hours.
Great professor! Her notes are extremely clear and helpful. Her class may not be interesting, but really helpful. You don't need to read the textbook but save it for 3rd year finance, just read her notes and try to understand all, you will get A! She is really nice. The most effective teacher I've ever seen!!
Ruth is clearly only an academic, clearly lacks the real life applications that some students have experienced. She gets intimidated and condescends sophisticated investment banking models from bulge bracket banks.
unorganized and has no real understanding of how an actual business functions - tries to overcompensate by spewing technical jargon to deflect inadequacy.
Best Finance Prof in Sauder. I will take her upper level course in the future. Crystal-Clear Lecture Slide! If you attend the lecture and focus, you will get a very high mark. Very fair marker.
She is an awesome Teacher. Very clear and gives good examples. Defiantly recommend her for Comm 370
Awesome Teacher. Great at clearly explaining topics.
she seems welcome questions, but when i actually come, she appears that I wasted her time. Her reaction is so inconsistent with her encouragement to ask questions. She hurts students who are keen to learn.
Crystal clear notes. You definitely learn a lot in this class. Exams are harder than those from other finance classes, but I'd say its worth it.
Ruth lectures off her slides and spends too much time on slides students could read in 2 minutes. She answers student questions with a degree of annoyance in her voice, and does not appear to care about student learning. Great class if you want to go and spend 80 minutes on social media.
Ruth is a great professor, one of the best for Finance. Slides are clear but lectures are sometimes hard to follow. She is a little hard to get along with but if you take classes seriously you'll do just fine. PS DO THE PROBLEM SETS
Her slides are good in accordance to lectures. Reading the notes and not going to class will not cut it. However, going to class is always a dread. Ruth speaks like a robot, goes on about something for 45 minutes, and she consistently answers students' questions with a very high, and noticeable degree of annoyance and condescension.
Clear lecture slides, don't buy textbook, do all the practice questions and you'll be fine.
Ruth is very meticulous and chooses her words carefully. Her slides are complete (albeit a little dry); you do not need a textbook at all. People might hate on her because she is old and not exactly "cool" but she is a great professor and is actually quite funny. I would recommend her to anyone who values substance over flair.
Had her for 298 and 370, really enjoyed her both times. Her notes are the best. Course is 40% midterm, 60% final; midterm is challenging but fair, however the final was brutal. Really tough, it's like nothing you've practiced all term. Take Ruth's class if you want to know corporate finance inside-out, but expect your grade to drop post-midterm.
It was my honor to have Ruth as my finance prof. She gives complete and straightforward lecture notes before every lecture. She expects students to attempt their best in figuring our answers to practice problems first, so come to her office hours with preparedness. She is just like my grandmother, kind and patient. (^_^)
Her lecture was quite clear, helpful, but boring. Maybe I am very biased because I simply hate finance. Textbook was irrelevant to our topics.
Best teacher I've ever had. material is dry but its finance, what do you expect? Really makes sure you learn and if you attend class you will ace her exams. Not many practice Qs but she really tries to explain concepts well.
Solid, no-nonsense professor for both COMM 298 and COMM 370. Go to lecture, take notes and do the practice problems and these courses won't be a challenge. Textbook not needed for either course, helpful via email in after class.
Her notes are great. Lectures are clear. Very organized prof. Go to her lecture and do the practice problems then you'll be fine. No need to buy the textbook.
She's a good professor with clear lecture slides although she's quite intimidating and her exams are very tough (some multiple choice questions worth 5 marks had no marks for working).
She is probably the best professor I have ever had in Sauder! :)
Don't need the textbook. Solid teacher who tests what she teaches and is super fair. Doesn't scale because her exams are straight forward and if you do the practice sets you should be able to ace this course. Early morning lectures are super painful and dry but honestly don't need to be in class to understand the concepts. Best teacher I've had
One of the best professors in Sauder. Go to lectures, do the practice problem sets posted each week (do them each week, not all at once before the exam), and you will easily get 90+. There's nothing on the exam you won't have seen before, and she is pretty lenient with part marks. Take her for 298 if you can.
Great for COMM 298, BUT SUPER HARD for COMM 370!
Hands down one of the worst professor I have had. Her lecture will put you to sleep, she reads her notes and by correcting mistakes in them she thinks she is adding value. (through lectures) If you go to her office hours she is rude and not helpful. This is the worst grade I received in Sauder out of any course.
Ruth has really clear explanations and class slides are easy to understand. Midterm and final were also fair. I ended up doing really well by keeping up with the problem sets each week and redoing the problem sets a few times before the exam. If you know how to do the problem sets, you'll know how do to her exams :)
Boring class. Boring lectures. Very hard to focus. The professor makes the class very un-interesting. Practically have to self-study the entire course. I would do the same whether there was a professor or not.
Ruth was really good at focusing more on quantitative over qualitative content in lectures, which was more important for the exams. Midterm was super hard but the final was easy which balanced it out. No textbook so doing the optional practice problems were the best way to study.
Ruth is a great woman and a great professor. Crystal clear in explanations, crystal clear lecture notes, no textbook needed. Give a look to the lecture notes before class, bring them to class, pay attention, do the exercises available on Canvas once back home, and you will pass with a good grade.
Ruth is the best with explanations. She is also very caring and provides tons of office hours so make sure you use them. She can be intimidating at first but that's just the way she talks lol. If you go to office hours you can see she really cares and wants you to get the material. Super smart lady and great prof.
Ruth is one of my favorite profs ever. She explains concepts really well and her lecture notes are very clear. As long as you put in a decent amount of time to study and do the practice problems, you'll do fine on the midterm and final. I love how she has tons of office hours before the exams too.
ruth just sucks in every way. so rude, often times tells students not to ask questions since it would take too much time. reads directly off the slides during class. and she is just not nice. do not try to ask her to clarify or to help explain something. avoid if you can!!
Honestly, I think she's average - not the best, not the worst. I appreciate how accessible she is during office hours and I like her sweet demeanour. At the same time, I think that her classes are too lecture-heavy that we can't get to work in groups nor get to know other students in the class. If that's your thing, then she's your prof.
Ruth does not care about the students' learning, she just reads off the slides, and her lectures are SO BORING. I'm planning on going into finance and her class almost convinced me otherwise. If you go to her office hours she makes you feel like an idiot for asking a question and is so aggressive and demeaning in her tone. do not recommend.
COMM 298 was definitely challenging and requires a good amount of effort. All the content for the course that actually appears on exams is on the slides. They provide a good amount of practice resources for the mid-term and final, but lectures were pretty difficult to engage with because the professor just read off of the slides.
Ruth is a decent prof for 298. She is very straightforward and has nailed down her lectures to cover the most important topics. Do all of the available practice questions that you have access to and you should do fine. Do not leave it till the last few days to study since the material is heavy and there is a lot to cover.
Gives you every resource you need to succeed. Her slides cover everything that show up on exams. Has a great selection of practice problems and quizzes. Lectures aren't very interesting but covers all the information you need.
Prof Freedman is the best finance prof I have ever had. Classes are lecture heavy but that is also just the nature of these finance courses. She is VERY clear in all her explanations and she repeats important concepts to ensure understanding. Her exams are also exactly everything she has said in her lectures. put in the work and you will succeed!
If you want a course where explanations are clear and what is taught in class and tested in practice resources will be representative of exam content, then Ruth is the prof for you. However, the course is very content-heavy and she tends to just read off the slides. She gives a lot of helpful practice resources. If you do them, you'll be set.
The course content is boring which is why her lectures are kind of boring but she teaches everything with such clarity that if you pay attention you barely have to review after. Just do the practice questions that she posts and the practice quizzes too and you will get a good mark
Ruth is a great choice for any finance class. She is straight-forward, organized, and has a clear way of explaining concepts. This class is test-heavy but all exams are fair and easy to do well on if you study. She provides good notes, but attendance is helpful in fully understanding concepts.
stares you down for literally EVERYTHING. when students correct her mistakes she gets defensive. when you ask her questions, her tone sounds annoyed and she gets visibly impatient, which is funny cause she "encourages" students to ask questions?? good at explaining but so monotone its incredibly boring, also never posts the completed notes.
I ADORE Ruth. Some teachers ramble on about things that don't matter and make things more complicated then they are? Ruth does the complete opposite of that. She explains things super clearly, and is super clear about what you need to know. Ruth makes everything so straightforward. I want to do finance just so I can have her as a prof again. 10/10
Ruth is awesome! She is a no bullshit, get things done kind of gal. Finance master.
Ruth is straight to the point and is able to turn a dry topic into one that is pretty interesting. She cares for her students and their mental health (ie. sometimes extending an assignment deadline if the hand-in % is low). She's strict but very fair. Unlike most profs who possess record-breaking egos, Ruth truly earns her respect.
Ruth is truly such an amazing professor. She is clear and wants everyone to do well in her class. Her assignments are applicable to the course material we are learning, she provides ample resources for you to use when studying (I procrastinate a lot and was able to cram for exams) I thought this would be my worst grade now I want to major in financ
Ruth is one of the best professors I've had at UBC. She explains things with precision and clarity. She is able simplify complicated concepts and make it readily understandable for students. You WILL get an A if you do every single practice quiz she puts out. Her office hours are super helpful so make use of that!
She's amazing. Clear grading criteria, and the tests are easy as long as you did her practice problems.
Super G Professor. So knowledgeable of the subject that it is scary how fast she can answer your question. Lectures are fairly easy to follow, and definitely attend them. Exams are extremely fair, and rewards those that work through the practice and ask questions in class. Very chill office hours and nice person :)
Ruth is by far the best option for 298. She does a great job of explaining the financial concepts while helping you solve problems during lecture. Great options for learning how to actually do the problems in finance. Always willing to meet with you and help you out and she has funny catch phrases that she says during lecture.
An excellent professor who is extremely knowledgeable, honestly a gem. It is rare that a prof paces lectures well but Ruth managed to do this and make them super clear and informative was a pleasure to be in her 298 class.
Ruth made sure to explain everything necessary in detail. Her exams were easy, and the class overall was structured very simply. Definitely recommend her!
Ruth can sometimes ramble but she is very passionate and knowledgable about finance. She is nice, very clear, and helpful. Some content is quite boring but Ruth teaches well. Slides contain everything and she gives many resources. Ruth's exams are not easy but are always fair; clear grading and testing criteria and the exams don't "trick" you. Rec!
I took 298 w/ Ruth a few years ago and had to take 370 w/ her (9:30am as a commuter!) after withdrawing from it before w/ a diff prof. She may ramble as others said, but she gives crystal clear explanations and delivers organized lectures. She always responds to emails and offers lots of extra OH. I'd recommend you take her but she's leaving :(
Ruth is an engaging prof who makes complex finance topics digestible. With clear lectures, helpful resources, and fair exams, she sets students up for success. unstuck ai was a game-changer for my study prep.
