Very easy to get an A. Gives lots of extra credit field trips & projects. Tests are pretty easy as well.
The best teacher I have ever had in my life. She is awesome. Amazing lectures.
Great professor! She actually knows how to teach and make the material interesting!
Very easy to follow and intersting to listen to.
Great teacher...funny as hell...I love her little side comments...she's interesting too which makes coming to class a no brainer! you have to concentrate and do your work, but she's fair and friendly.
This was the best science class I've ever taken, and I owe it all to Ruth. I never missed a class and I was never tempted too, and that's coming from someone who loathes science. She's a great teacher. I highly reccomend her for anyone. She's awsome!
This is by far the most discouraging class I have ever taken. The teacher gives you five minutes of instruction and then goes and hides in her office for three hours while you have to try to figure out what she really wants by yourself. Avoid taking a lab class from this teacher at any cost!!!
An awesome teacher, if you do the work that you are suppose to, and are not in the Jr. College mentality, I HIGHLY recommend this class.
Ms. Hanna is a very good teacher. She has great study guides that go over everything in detail. I wasn't looking forward to taking the class but she made it interesting. Just makes sure you attend every class and review everything and you'll get an A.
I loved Ms. Hanna! She is the funniest and coolest teacher there. I actually took geology for "fun" because I really liked her method of teaching. She's very knowledgeable and knows how to make a classroom exciting (unlike MOST teachers) especial
One of the best teachers I have ever had. You can tell she really loves to teach!
She is a great teacher who makes it interesting because she loves geology. You will learn a TON, but there is some work involved and the tests aren't too hard at all.
Awesome teacher. Great teaching style. All her slides are a little much and they can get confusing because after time, they all look the same. The way she presents the matereal makes it really interesting & fun. Definately a great class.
Awesome teacher! Excellent attention to the class! Best teacher I have ever had. She is patient and energetic and really helps you learn her subject! She is passionate about it!
Don't let people fool you..really cool teacher but a LOT of memorization needed in class. TONS of information on every test. Wouldn't recommend unless interested in science.

this teahcer is really interested in what she does. The class is really easy and she gives you a book with every question on the tests in it at the beginning of the semester. If you answer the questions in the book there is no way u fail the tests.
The lecture class is simple. She is very good at teaching it, and all the tests and quizzes are online, it actually does help you learn it better. The lab class is a little harder. Its boring, and all you do for the first half is learn about rocks. The second half you learn how to read maps, which also sucks. She is very helpful if you ever need help with her topic...deffiantly take this teacher
Do not take her online class especially if you can't go to her once a week 1 unit extra class. You will learn nothing. She doesn't teach you anything all you do is take tests that take a hour each and you have to take ten of them. And the only way to prepare for the test is by reading the book or doing the book's CD. Takes too much time to do well
Ruth is the most prepared teacher I have ever met. She is high energy, enthusiastic and makes the course fun and interesting. In return she wants you to be in the class 5 minutes early if possible and she doesn't like people coming late and disrupting the class. There is plenty of extra credit available so grading is not a problem.
Great lectures with lots of visuals. You can tell that she is very into what she teaches. One of the best teachers I have had at Las Positas. She is must if you take Geology.
Boring, oh so boring. I will admit she tries really hard to make it interesting... but still fails. Good news is the class is easy, online tests that you can take as many times as you want. Oh, and if you have a question, she only answers them in her office hours.
How can you say that Ruth Hannah is boring? Ruth is what a teacher is suppose to be, especially at a junior college. She is one of my favorite teachers on campus and i dont have a lot of those, i usually try to fight them. I look up to her as a mentor now. Just do your homework, its and easy way to complete Physical Science for all you transfer-rer
Online Geo1 class, hard, got a C, I tried but it must be because it was online, really hard to understand the textbook at times
I took the class online. I found her to be terribly disorganized and not especially helpful. A lot of material on the tests was not from the text book, and she'd say "look it up online!" (because the internet is SO reliable.../sarcasm). I do not recommend her online class at all. Only positive is 450+ points of extra credit available.
In the online course, I found her to be disorganized and not very clear. She has a wealth of information to impart, she's just not very efficient at it. Her website is a jumbled mess & difficult to understand. Basically, I learned nothing from this class -- unless you count learning how to look up the answers really fast for the online quizzes.
I love this teacher, her syllabus sounds more scarier than she is, you can't ask for a more wonderful instructor, loves her job, her students and her assistant Carol Edson is the icing on an already wonderful cake!!!! DOn't miss taking Ruth!!!
Honestly the course work is very difficult but highly interesting. Communication with this professor through an online course was top-notch and I would definitely take further classes with Hanna.
I made the mistake of taking the online lecture class and the lab at the same time. The lecture and the lab material do not coincide making it difficult to get a grip. I do agree with other ratings that mention the spazmotic display of cartoon images on her web page. NOT HELPFUL.However I love her as a lecture instructor. She is the best, Carol too
This teacher had it out for me from the 2nd week. I left the room during a slide show and she never forgot. Gave me a C with B work. Be careful with this teacher. I lost all enthuasism for natural sciences after taking this class.
She was a good teacher. I learned A LOT in this class. She is very enthusiastic when it comes to teaching and she was able to make a class about Earth and rocks very interesting. Just make sure you attend class and you are almost guarenteed a B. She always has quizzes in the beginning of class that counts as extra credit so you don't wanna be late.
I took the online class and everything was there but she was not helpful at all when you had a question. I would not recommend her at all but if you have to, do your**** on time and don't cram. The only best thing is the extra credit which is almost impossible to do.
Great online instructor! Always sending out reminders, even though she doesn't have too. She stays on top of her students because she wants everyone to pass, and succeed. She is a diamond of a teacher!
Such an amazing teacher i never cared for geology until i took this class! Take the friday class it seems like such a pain but it is seriously so worth it!!
She makes it a point of telling you attending class is not required. The only thing you get out of it is extra credit. Everything is done online(mostly tests) tests can be taken over and over again until you get a desired score. You only need to accumulate 900 points for an A. I didn't read the book and skimmed it while taking the tests and got a A
If you go to class and take the lab class on friday's she is the easiest teacher in the world
Totally awesome teacher. Extremely helpful, take the Geo 9 class too it helps a lot. tons of extra credit, easy to well over 100% She to awesome. TAKE her class. you will love it
Took her oceanography and multiple geology courses back in the mid 90's. I didn't have much of an interest in Geology until after I took her classes. I really considered going into Oceanography after her course. Great teacher!
Hanna is a wonderful teacher. She gives lots of extra credit. I learned a lot and her labs are fun.
Honestly the best teacher ever. Has great teaching techniques! You'll have fun.
One of the best teachers at LPC- hands down. She is extremely passionate, thorough, & helpful. Her course is fair & she offers all students the opportunity to earn an A. I highly recommend her class.
She sounds awesome in class, & I wish I had taken that rather than the online course. I should have known from the 39 (no exaggeration) overly anal syllabus. The consistently harping emails - As if she believes her students wear helmets, & If that were the case - the module 1 wouldn't be on CH 1,9,&22 (not all content in these chapters either)
If you are considering this teacher or another choose her! Even if you do not like what she teaches you will learn everyday because she is a great instructor. Also her class is a very easy A.
Intelligent, engaging, funny, helpful, genuinely interested in her students and the course material. Cannot recommend her enough.
Professor Hana was a really smart lady. She included a ton of potential extra credit opportunities and she uses a lot of slides for visuals, making it much easier to absorb the material. I would highly recommend Ms. Hanna.
Great teacher, fun/easy class. Tests are online with multiple attempts - 50 questions straight from lecture, available from the beginning of the semester until the timeout dates (every 4 weeks or so) Tons of extra credit offered. Grade is based on point scale not percentage. Very helpful, knowledgeable, and passionate. Highly recommend this class.
Ruth Hanna makes that class alot easier, but she is not the kind of "Easy" teacher doesn't care about what they are presenting and what they're doing so they don't even try to teach the students, She presents the material really well and its really easy to understand and she cares alot about her students, I suggest take her Class 10
Awesome teacher! She really knows her stuff and makes sure her students do too. She gives you every possible opportunity to succeed, I would highly recommend her! :)
One of the funniest and most intellegent professors I have ever had. She made a subject that I "knew" I would hate...so much fun. I would take any class she was teaching...even though it has been years since I had her. Great job Ruth !!
Ruth sends a ludicrous number of emails and gives loads of handouts reminding you to do your homework. She's very good at hammering on ideas until you want to either vomit or leave. She's not very nice to her TA and blames all issues on Carol. Exams are from the book and lecture, and easy enough if you study. I wouldn't take her classes again.
Prof. Hanna was awesome. I took Geo 1 and the lab different semesters and both I found to be very interesting. She WANTS students to learn and will teach something until you get it. Powerpoint lectures are easy to follow and tests are online with multiple attempts. Asks students for feedback at end of sem. Very goofy and loves what she teaches!
Prof Hanna is AMAZING! I have learned so much and have learned more about the world we live in, increased my knowledge on where to live and where not to. Even if geology is not of interest to you, this class will have atleast one thing you can take away that is valuable and relevant to life(:
Fairly easy class if you attend lecture and do the exams on time. Hanna is rather standoffish if you ask her a question (any question) and is not very nice to her TA who is incredibly kind and helpful. Hanna sends a ridiculous amount of emails, I stopped reading them altogether (10 before the semester even started). I did learn quite a bit though.
Front load class. She gives plenty of extra credit to pass the class. Quick at responding to emails. Tests are long and the book plus her study guide are required.
Probably the easiest class you will take in your life. Buy the book, go to class, take the tests and you will get an A. The tests are online, open book, open google, and most importantly REPEATABLE untill the dead line. Basically take it untill you get the grade you want. Great class to take with friends.
took her geology 1 class. her class is so interesting. extremely easy. no class exam. almost everything had to do online. its only takes time thats it. u will know a lot unknown things about earth. ended up this class with an A. highly recommended
Very nice and helpful teacher, reallyworks with the student. Some of the tests seem hard but you can do them over and over again untill you get it right.
Clear she loves her job+nice but it LAB CLASS WAS DIFFICULT. It was three hours long, a lot of hands-on work which was both nice but exhausting. Expect to take a lot of notes-you should-because there is a LOT you are expected to retain. The exams are BRUTAL- and I really studied, too, buying an extra book to help out. Still did poorly on them.
I took her Geology 1 class online. Even with the corresponding textbooks, it was based off of exams that were BRUTAL AS HELL. Even when I grouped up with 2 partners taking the same class. And re-tests. None of us could get higher than a C on any of her tests. What the hell? Never such a hard online class before. Maybe IRL she's easier.
This class was easy and hard at the same time. It's cool since you can take all the exams and quizzes unlimited times but it will never tell you what you got correct or incorrect so its hard to see what you need to study more on. There is 600 total extra credit points that you can do but you need to get a 90% or better for it to count.. (lame)
Take oceanography online! Answers are pretty easy to find (index is your BFF). No time outs, unlimited attempts, tons of extra credit! Apparently over half my class got an A. Responds to emails fast enough
Quizzes can be completed as soon as the class opens. Tests were opened by week. You must have a textbook. Took during the Summer so it moved very quickly, however it was easy. She sends reminders so you didn't forget about the assignments. Great teacher for independent learners.
I took her oceanography class in the summer & was scared I wasn't going to do well. She ended up being one of my favorite professors. She is the most helpful and organized teacher I have had so far at LPC. The tests are long but she allows you to take them as many times as you want. Easy grader and nice person overall. I definitely recommend her!
Really boring class, but super easy A. Just be sure to do all of the assignments as she's instructed, and you'll get full credit. Half of the semester involved a daunting group project making "wiki sites" which was annoying, but still pretty easy. So, if you enjoy online class group projects, this class is definitely for you.
Really easy to pass this class she gives out TONS of extra credit, her lectures are kinda boring though but all her test are online with unlimited attempts. You must do the in class quizzes everyday but they help to keep you on track and she pretty much gives you the answers.
Ruth Hanna is the best teacher for Geology! Her Lectures are interesting a bit boring, but if you put some effort you can come out on top with an A! I highly recommend you take this professor, she is sweet and you might like Carol!
This is probably the easiest classes you'll take at LPC outside of basket-weaving or something, lol. You really have to try to not pass with all the ex credit. I recommended taking this class with a bunch friends. Prof. Hanna can be rather funny and is a good lecturer, but sometimes she's just straight up rude. Carol (her assistant) rocks though.
I will miss this class so much!! If you need a geology class lecture take her!!!! She made geology so fun and she is very laid back. Make sure to show up for class. Most of the work was online, tests, extra credit, homework. There is no way to fail her class, she makes it easy to understand and challenging in a fun way. I will Miss her alot!
Lecture class was fine but her Lab might be the worst class I've ever taken. Teaches you the basics and then suddenly you're on your own. She expects all correct answers and gives you no help after the first month. Be prepared to guess a lot unless you want to cram all the text books.
You should definitely take this Geology class!I don't want to cheapen the class by saying it was an easy A, but you will genuinely enjoy the lectures and presentations. Trust me when I say, even if you have 0 interest in the science field, you will love this class.
I regret taking her class, her tests were really hard. All we had to do is quizzes, test, and discussion board assignments and that is it. She is awful at replying back, you need the book to pass and you definitely have to read a lot. For this class you have to learn by yourself, don't expect any help from her.
I only needed 900 points to get an A in this class. There are 8 module exams, and the last one is worth 200 points. At the end of the semester, I barely showed up. I had 800 points and I failed the last exam, still passed with an A. Just googled everything.
I took Intro to Oceanography online over the summer and really enjoyed it. Professor Hanna sends a lot of emails to keep you updated--she even sent them to people on the wait list, so when I got in I wasn't behind at all. She also gives out lots of extra credit pop quizzes based on interesting oceanographic info that's not in the book.
I took Intro to Geology as an online class. A lot of reading, bi-weekly chapter tests (with the option of multiple retakes). You will pass the class if you do the reading.
Ruth Hanna has a very easy, funny, very clear grading criteria, and gives out tons of extra credit. The homework is super easy. You can miss a couple classes and make up for it with extra credit. She gives out quizzes at the beginning of class. She doesn't like peoples' phones on or distractions except when students are interacting with the class.
I took GEOL1 online last Spring. This class was easy enough. Weekly quizzes, about 8 big module tests. I never emailed her so I don't know how she is at replying. If you need the science credit and you'll take the time to sit down and do well on the tests, you should think about taking this class. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT.
Tests are tough, but there are plenty of extra credit assignments to make up for that. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT!!
I took her online oceanography class and it was pretty easy. the module exams were definitely a pain and they took hours, but i ended with an A. You really just have to use your textbook to find answers.
Amazing at keeping a lecture hall's attention - very funny. Easy to take notes, you learn a lot from coming to class. Open notes/book on all tests/quizzes/final (online at home "tests" every week - easy. Quizzes every class, only a couple questions, must attend to take them). You should get her green study guides, but I rarely used the textbook
Loved my geology 1 class. You need to take notes each class, but everything is very interesting. She's easy to listen to and really chill. Each class is basically: beginning of class online quiz (easy), notes, end of class quiz (easy). There's a test each week online which is open note, book, internet, and you can retake it as much as you want.
She is an excellent teacher. Always willing to answer questions in class. Just be aware, her tests are hard. You really need to take notes and pay attention, otherwise you will suffer.
Ruth Hanna is one of the best teachers I have had at Las Positas! Even though I had to take geology for my IGETC requirements, her online ChalkTalks and assignments are easy to manage. I went to her in class lecture one time and you can tell she is so passionate about this subject. 10/10 recommend taking her! ALSO great extra credit opportunities!
Energetic, awesome teacher. Uses tons of pictures and diagrams. There are in class quizzes at the beginning and sometimes end of class, easy with notes from prev. So you have to come. Tons of extra credit opportunities. The tests are online, but they take a long time(at least an hour for me, tons of qs). Most of the answers are in the textbook.
SO MUCH OPPORTUNITY!! Incredible lectures, extremely engaging! I would take this course several times if I had the time.
She is the best teacher I've ever had. Some tests are harder than others, but you'll be fine. Take notes because it will help you when you take your test.
I took her Intro to Geology lecture and it was great! The material was absolutely amazing, even if you're not into science or the earth. It was so interesting and she filled the lecture with humor and made it incredibly interesting. Every class, we have a before or end of class quiz where you can use notes or classmates. Super easy, super fun
Took the online CRS Fall2017 and had to work for the grade on the weekly online quizzes; most were 52 questions that you couldnt just google all. Had to watch her YouTube vids that had her answers. Overall, fair. If you work hard from the start you end up with enough points due to extra credit and clearly know your grade; possibly skip final.
Ruth Hanna is a good teacher. Her teaching is clear and easy to understand. Grading criteria is clear.
I took her Oceanography class and I found it to be very interesting, the assignments were fun and her instruction and examples were very easy to understand. I recommend this class and proffessor.
Ruth Hanna is the best Professor I have ever had! Every lecture is interesting and packed with knowledge. I feel like I have learned more in this class than any other class. She knows how to keep her class engaged and staying involved. I never wanted to miss a class.
I took Professor Hanna online for Spring and was amazed at the material. I had no Idea I would enjoy the class so much. It is not an easy class, but it was worth every minute. I learned so much in her class that I plan on taking another of her classes. If you want to learn about the planet than take her class!
Professor Hanna made rocks interesting! I had no idea that geology would be so interesting and fun. I found myself engaged and inspired by her online class, can you imagine what a class of hers would be like in person?... I look forward to taking another class with her. You won't regret taking her class. Have fun with it!
Professor Hanna is a fantastic professor! I was worried about taking this class online, but she made oceanography easy and fun to learn. Unlimited time on quizzes and the chance to retake them made the class not as stressful. The best perk about her was she always responded quickly back to emails and gave wonderful feedback on assignments.
She is very attentive towards her students. Does not accept late work. Tests are quite heavy. The final was really hard. I passed the class with a B :( Just make sure you do the reading and discussion posts. Expect discussion post weekly, tests every chapter. Shes not easy and shes not hard. Just have to put in the work. Great teacher though
She is very nice and makes learning about rocks interesting. Not a lot of hw and she offers some EC.
Professor Hanna is great. Her assignments can be very tedious and quizzes are a little challenging, but if you do an assignment that isn't perfect she will email you and tell you exactly how you can fix it and receive full credit. She also offers a lot of extra credit. She's very helpful and answers quickly when you have questions.
im so glad i took this class, i finished it an entire month early because she allows you to do so. read the textbook and take notes for the quizzes. unlimited and untimed attempts. forum discussions, follow her template and you can get 100% easily on all of those. so much extra credit, only way you can fail is by being lazy, don't take if ur busy
I am so glad that I took professor Hanna! She is a great professor that responds to messages quicker than other professors usually would. I actually finished the class a month early because she allowed us to. The class consists of quizzes for chapters every week, which you have unlimited attempts for but you can not see the right answers after.
no lecture; learn on ur own and work with classmates to pass. if u don't read the book before the online exams ur screwed - makes them impossible to find. very in-depth matching questions, not on the internet, not even skimming textbook. u need to KNOW the stuff. kind gal but class is not ideal if ur only taking for requisite. i do not recommend
She really cares about the material and her students. I took her as a hybrid class (online lecture, in-person lab) and it was great. Put a little bit of effort and it's easy to get an A. Really easy to talk to too, especially if you have a situation that might affect your performance. Expect a lot of group work.
I highly recommend collaborating with other students. A lot of reading and lectures, but she makes her lessons really interesting. I loved her class.
Prof. Hanna was a great teacher! I had her Geol 12 class over the summer and had a blast doing it. She really cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She opened up her class 1 month early to so we could get a head start! There was a lot of reading since it was a fast pace class. I would definitely have her as a teacher again!
She is very organized and concise about her assignments, do be ready to read a lot of instructions. The class I took was fast-paced, so overall read the chapters and follow directions. All quizzes are unlimited attempts and no time limit.
Professor Hannah is an extremely kind and understanding professor. I took this online and this was by far the easiest class of my life. All quizzes are open notes and unlimited attempts, including the final. So there's really no way you should get less than an A in her class. Quizzes every week, but that means no midterm. Overall easiest class ever
Professor Hanna is a wonderful instructor, clearly passionate, and the class is pretty easy. Quizzes every week on textbook chapters - questions can be confusing and won't always be answered by the book - and handful of discussion boards. Lots of extra credit, especially at the end of the semester. Put in effort and it's an easy A.
She is very picky about how you do your discussion posts. So please read through the directions carefully. You're on your own the whole class, she does not do zoom, just read the chapter and take the quiz weekly.
Each week there was a quiz with 20 questions and every 2 or 3 weeks there is a class forum to fill out like a mini project. She always gave detailed feedback. I would say the time it takes per week to study and pass is a couple hours at most (few quizzes are more). Google was better than the textbook for studying.
Prof Hanna was great. She is super nice and has interesting zooms that keep you engaged. She is very generous with EC at the end of semester. Weekly chapter quizzes from textbook. No midterm because she divides it up and gives you unlimited attempts at everything including the final. I would recommend this class to anyone. 10/10 professor.
If you do the work then she is super easy. The class is basically quizzes and a few discussions. All of the quizzes including the final are open book, unlimited time, and unlimited attempts (but the catch is that each time you retake a quiz, there are different questions). She is a super easy grader if you do as she asks. Overall easy Prof.
Absolute favorite teacher. Had her during Covid & she gives the BEST lectures. She even showed me her adorable dog a few times on zoom. Had a B most of semester until final where she gives several extra credit opportunities and ended up with an A+. She grades on points not percentage - if you have above 900 points you have an A. TAKE HER CLASS!!
Geology has always been an interest of mine, and Professor Hanna's class was challenging but interesting. Tests are HARD and can't be answered out of the textbook, but you have unlimited attempts. Lots of extra credit, especially at the end of the semester. Friendly, easy to get ahold of, and clearly cared about the subject.
Take her. Shes easy. Shes nice. What else can you ask for? Grade based on quizzes but quizzes are unlimited attempts. Quizzes arent that bad, sometimes you can search SOMETIMES Questions up, SOMETIMES you can find in study guides or notes she provides. Only 2 or 3 most 4 discussion boards throughout semester!
Many quizzes and tests were all open book, unlimited attempt, and untimed. Professor Hanna was very easy to reach, she always responded to my messages right away! She provided a lot of interesting information and although I took this class for credits, I found it very interesting.
isn't very interactive with students. it was like a scavenger hunt to get the answers to quizzes. it was pretty hard to find most answers in the reading. they are unlimited attempts but you cant see which questions you got wrong and the second attempt has harder questions than the first!
Professor Hanna was amazing. I took her geology 1 class using zoom and she gave great lectures. I could tell she is fascinated with geology. Barely any homework, but turn in notes the day of the lecture. Quizzes were taken before class started and on the final exam she gave us enough time to turn it in and even retake it. Pretty easy class.
