hard to understand, booksmart
little boring but easy if you just read
I can't understand a word she's saying, hope you like teaching yourself the book
Showing up to class almost waste of time, tests a little tricky, easy B
boring, tough class cuz lectures are like what?!?, good luck reading eve
Just going to class is enough. Hard to understand, but paper is easy.
everyone is saying that she is hard to understand, but she's not! you will get a good grade just writing down the notes.
show up take notes get an B. Dont even need book. paper sucks though.
She is so boring, and hard to understand at times. He tests are a mixture of lectures and readings. Has a research paper.
Dont need book if you take class notes.Class is slow though.Easy tests and a easy grader.
pretty easy, take notes and she gives a study guide, pretty easy B to obtain. Dont really need to read the text, her notes have everything u need in them. just take notes and u will do good!
She is pretty cool and really nice. Just do the reading for the class and the tests will be a breeze.
She's easy. I got a B+ with my eyes closed. Coming to lecture is important though.

Cool teacher, not too hard. Pay attention in class and your set for an A. Covers all the material in her lectures. One paper and about 4 tests(all non cumulative)
hard to understand at times, no sense of humor, does not like to work with you.
The study guide that she gives out helps a lot before the tests. And the required paper shouldnt be a problem as long as you follow the handout. She even lets you select your own topic of an occurance of deviance within your own life! I wrote it out the night before it was due and got a 90.
hard class and boring, hard to understand her. gives you a study guide, but the tests are kinda hard. dont recommend the class
Extremely Easy Class. Lectures follow the Book Exactly. All tests are multiple choice, if you know study the notes, you'll do fine. I recommend reading the book for reinforcing her lectures (it really heplped me) She grades difficult on the paper & not much instruction on it. Good Sense of humor.

Boring prof and class. hard to understand, must attend class to do well, but she doesnt make it fun. 3 tests and a paper...
dont believe what these people say!!! ,she is awesome, her notes are extremely clear and her study guides are very helpful. i have never met a professor so organized with her notes. i highly recommend this class!!
I got in the mid 90s on every test without having to study very hard. I ended up with a freaking B+ for my grade. I admit I did not go to all the classes. She is so damn boring through.
Very easy. The tests are straight forward. 1 paper, 3 tests (all multiple choice), no attendance.
She is difficult to understand at times. I would take some other professor if I could redue the experience. I don't like that although I did great on everything except the first test, my grade is still a low B. There is no room to make up one bad test.
I liked her.She was tough to understand sometimes, but she's very clear about what she teaches. She has a different way about her, but it's sociology and in taking that class you should know not everybody perceives certain things the same way you do. Our class was rough on her, but I still liked her.
Somewhat hard to understand but she gives a study guide of everything that will be on the test. Her lectures are very precise and easy to understand. She is funny, without even trying!
Has a deffinent accent, she's from China, but not too bad & can understand w/out much trouble. Don't need to buy the book amd cancels the final. Just take notes and fairly straightforward. Has some authority problems, there were many in our class who wouldn't stop talking but she lacked the ability to quiet them (they needed a few slaps).
Good teacher and not difficult to understand if you just listen, has a very mild accent. Gives study guides before every exam, the study guides do follow what is on the exams. One paper and 3 exams. Study a lot for the first exam b/c it's the most challenging of the three. She does not grade on a curve and does not make exceptions for indiv. cases.
Easy class, but she is very boring and has an accent. Don't raise your hand in this class because if you get it wrong she may humiliate you.
Easy class=3 tests, 1 paper, don't buy the book. study guides to the tests! go to class and take notes, a lot of it is common sense that you've learned from 10 other similar GE classes.
Professor Liu's funny without trying. Don't bother buying the book - all your notes come from lecture powerpoints. The course is straightforward but I didn't learn anything new (dare say, easy). She's on top of her ****. Easy research paper (REALLY EASY). Three tests, no midterm. Felt bad for her, though --- people were always talking over her.
This teacher and this class in particular was sooooooo easy. It got a little dull at times but if you are at all interested in sociology you will enjoy it and like how easy it is! It is a no stress course.
This class was really easy. She has everything you need in her powerpoint presentations. Just take good notes and you'll be fine. Her stories from China are really funny.
This teacher is awesome!!!!! So nice, helpful, and real ezzzzzzzzz! Get the point take her class
Really nice teacher, class was pretty easy. 3 exams and 1 paper. Don't really need the book, most of the answer for the test are in her powerpoint. Gives you a study guide. Overall easy class.
Relatively easy class if you take decent notes and study her outline. Comparisons of life in the US with her experiences in China were interesting. Very helpful if you need direction on the paper. Book is helpful but most of her tests are from the powerpoint outlines. You will miss the unannounced class group discussion writeups if not in class.
Funny lady. Real straightforward with material. Easy midterm paper. Attendance isn't required as long as you know people in class to give you notes. Great GPA booster if you need it.
has she changed?
She's a cool teacher, I enjoyed her class and loved that she gave us a very thorough study guide. All her notes are on powerpoint and her tests consists of stuff right out of the notes and article questions from her reader. This class sure helped me raise my gpa w/o the stress. Her stories from China are hilarious. vERY INTERESTING TAKE HER...
easy class. very informative.
This class is very easy, take notes and your test will be on those notes. Also read the "reading" but the text book isn't really that important. Her class is boring, but overall an easy class. You do have one paper that is a short research paper of your chioce, easy also.
This teacher has a slight accent but it was not trouble for me to understand. She is not very challenging, if you take all of her notes down and study them for the test you will do well. Overall, she is nice and knowlegeable.
Dr. Liu is a great professor! Class is interesting and she cares about her students. Highly recommended ...
This class was VERY easy. Three fairly easy non-cumulative tests (70% of grade), one research paper(20%)on topic of your choice, and some in class participation (10%). Don't buy the book - I got perfect scores on tests without it. Dr. Liu is very nice, intelligent, and helpful. Not a difficult class by any means if you put in some effort.
SHE IS A GREAT PROFESSOR, THREE TEST ONE SHORT PAPER. SHE IS FUNNY AND EASY TO TALK TO. I LOVED THIS CLASS!!!
Easy and interesting professor teaching an interesting class. The textbook isn't necessay because her lecture notes cover everything you need to know for the 3 tests + Paper. Going to class is a must because she takes attendance and doesn't post her notes on blackboard.
She was a very interesting professor. I really enjoyed going to her lectures because you can tell she knows what shes talking about and enjoys her subject. DONT BUY THE BOOK! Its a waste of money, just go to class and take good notes. All tests are based off of the lectures and are fairly easy.
Prof. Liu's tests are pretty much based solely on lectures. A text isn't required, but her supplement is required as some test questions are based on them, unlike the textbook. The bottom line is to go to class everyday (attendance is taken)and take good notes. There was a 6-10 page paper and is based on something personal/real life example.
Prof. Liu was adorable! She was funny without even trying. Her tests are easy and like everyone else has said you don't need the book. You have all semester to do the paper and it's not difficult. Just show up and take good notes and you should get a good grade.
Got a B in her class. 3 test straight up from powerpoint and text book. One final paper that you have all semester for 6-10 pages and its cake to finish. Attendance is taking at the end of every class and is 10% of your grade. Looking for a easy elective, not bad here.
Informative class... However you have to take lots of notes, she's always right on tests, she takes roll by doing group work in class or homework to turn it, lectures are boring and long. 3 tests 1 group presentation... I wouldn't recommend her but if it's your only option... good luck.
Interesting class Professor very helpful. Class is simple 3 test 1 short paper & you are done
The material had a lot of potential to be interesting, unfortunately she was an incompetent and rude professor. Class consisted of packed powerpoints. Easily my least favorite professor at SDSU
Exams cover mostly her power points, and a little bit from the textbook. 3 exams and a paper, pretty easy since she gives you study guides. Just show up and take good notes. Also, definitely start the term paper early on and don't do it at the end, it'll be less stressful for you. She's nice and tries to make the class fun! Sign-in sheets though :(
Homework is basically discussions each week that you do not want to miss. I didn't use the book until the end of the semester for the only essay assigned. Lectures are recorded online & helpful for the exams, if you have the book with you though it will be even better for some clarity. I don't think this class was hard but I could have done better
I actually really liked this class. Her prerecorded lectures are essential to passing and they're really short. I took good notes from her lectures, never opened the book and did the weekly assignments which take about 2 minutes to complete after you've heard the lecture. One easy paper at the end of the semester. Overall easy and informative.
Since online class, it's essential to listen to all lectures (they're short)/do all assignments & quizzes. She replies relatively quickly to emails if you have any questions. Quizzes come straight from lecture or the text book (almost verbatim from the book). Essay prompt was easy & you get to choose what film you want to apply class theories to.
Make sure to attend every class and take notes & study hard for her tests. Not an easy A but put in the time and you will do good. Don't need to buy books didn't get them and ended up with a B.
Don't do it.
I liked Liu, but she did have the tendency to be rude sometimes. The classes are interesting, and 444 had 3 tests and one paper. Tests are pretty easy if you study, but the paper is a little more difficult. Grading is VERY strict. She's set on an 89.9% is a B. Other than that, she's good.
Class is composed of ppt lectures, videos and BB readings, weekly assignments is answering 2 easy questions due every friday. There is 5 tests and one paper too. Easy class if you study and do the work. Her tests can be tricky so make sure you read the chapters assigned from books because she will ask about 10 questions on book readings. I likedher
3-4 online lectures each week, along with an activity after each lecture (really simple, one-sentence questions). The lectures are short, but painful to sit through because her thick accent is hard to understand. Tests are difficult, so make sure you take good lecture notes. Textbook is not needed. Would not take again because of her accent.
Terrible teacher, does not explain herself correctly, her accent is kind of heavy but you are able to understand the material on your own, no help from her. basically you are taking the class by yourself by teaching yourself she is of no help. If you have the option, take another professor than this one. She is not that smart and confuses herself.
Really straight forward person. 3 exams and one paper. You have to attend every class to earn participation points. By the end of each lecture she will post some questions and those count for you attendance. There is no extra credit. Not really helpful during office hours. She makes you feel bad if you do go.
Typical online class. Do the work pass. The lectures can be a bit dry, but they are very short. The majority of what is tested is from the textbook. Tests are very straightforward, no trick questions. If you legitimately try, you will probably get the grade you want. If you need to reach put to the professor, she is available within hours.
VERY boring professor. Lectures are dry and hard to understand sometimes due to accent. Seems like a nice professor but wasn't wonderful. I don't know if I would take her again.
This class is easy and straight forward and it was a summer class. Her accent is really strong but I could make out what she was saying. Short and easy assignments every week and a test in the middle of the week. Essay is based on a movie in which the concepts are applicable.
Her lectures are actually very interesting. Youll need the book for tests. Her lectures are not that long and has short weekly questions to write for that weeks lecture. Tests are average. She responds back and its not much of a hard class. You can finish the weeks class in a day. I believe there is one essay but its not boring at all.
5 exams, 17 assignments and an essay over the semester. Not a class worth taking, especially as an elective/filler class unless you're okay with dry material.
Class is composed of weekly recorded lecture and a short write up assignment from either the lecture or the textbook. 5 online exams. 1 6-8 page paper on analyzing a deviant behavior (ex: any murder mystery that interests you) I hate papers, but this one was easy and I didn't mind doing! Seriously easy class, material is interesting
Pretty straight forward class. There is a schedule for everything. Recorded lectures, assignments, exams, and deadlines. Watch the lectures, take notes, submit your homework, and take the exams. You will pass easily. I messed up because I forgot about the date of the last exam and missed it hence the reason for my grade. Definitely would take again!
Prof Ruth is nice and lectures are clear, but yet tests are not fully based on what she teaches and she even provides us with a study guide. Easy class, 70% of your grade is based on the exams. Hard to recover if you don't do well one of them.
Class consisted of several exams, a weekly assignment, & a 6-10pg paper. Exams are extremely difficult as she words them impossible just so no two exams are the same for her students. Also the majority of your grade falls on the exams so if you fail them its hard to redeem yourself.
Professor Liu was an amazing professor. Her class is definitely one you have to study a lot for. If you do the readings, take notes and study then it should be fairly easy to get a B and above. Your whole grade is based on exams and a 6-10 page paper that is pretty easy.
PowerPoint points are straightforward. There are polls she asks you to answer during lectures and count as participation points. Short assignments every week but if you take notes of the PPT or watch the videos she assigns youll have no problem answering them. Didnt use the textbook. 3 exams, 1 term paper. Your grade is always updated on canvas.
Took soc444 and soc445 from her in the same semester. Needless to say, I got to understand her as a professor and the classes were pretty solid. Lectures and notes are really helpful. I missed one assignment and was borderline to getting the next grade and she kindly reopen the assignment so I can do it and it bumped my grade. I def recommend her.
This class was really interesting and touched on taboo subjects that would otherwise be skipped over in other classes. Best advice: Don't watch the lectures (she's a little hard to understand) - read the transcripts instead. If you do this, you will pass no problem.
The class is mundane despite the topic being interesting. no engagement. 3 tests, 1 term paper. Tests are in person and the questions are very specific, most from lecture but if ur unlucky enough she'll throw in a couple from the book so u can prove you read it. The tests cover EVERYTHING, so the study guides are all over 100 terms and concepts.
this class was not bad in terms of organization, but her timed quizzes are what made the course difficult. lectures are typically 12-25 minutes long. a lot of information is found in the book, it will be difficult to navigate through her exams if you do not watch her lectures. overall, not bad, but i did do a lot of work.
As another student already mentioned, the assignments are easy but the tests are really difficult due to the short time limit which makes up most of your grade. Students had emailed her asking for more time and her response was no & if we needed extra time to contact the student ability success center in case we had a disability. Don't take her.
Her class is really hard, you have to read the textbook and take really good notes,I also recommend taking good notes for her lecture slides. If she assigns articles or a movie to watch take a lot of notes too. Her quizzes are 30 questions and you have 35 min. to complete. Don't think about cheating with someone because you get randomized questions.
Great class for a student who is able to watch lectures and do homework on their own time. Some quiz questions come from lectures and readings. 30-question quizzes with 35 min timer. Overall good experience.
Online class, all lectures posted. Use subtitles if needed. Every week a discussion that is 2 points is due, one paper, and a few quizzes.
I got 100% on both the essays and assignments. What brought me down were the timed exams, usually got a D on all exams except I got an A on the last one which had me pass the class. wouldn't recommend taking this class if you don't have time to read 50 pages weekly, watch lectures & documentaries & study hard for exams..btw exams are 65% of grade
Professor Liu is okay, her class is well organized however, the exams are 60 percent of your grade and you don't know what questions you get wrong. Ok class, but I didn't learn anything new just memorization for the timed quizzes. No extra credit, ended up 5 points away from an A.
If you go to the lecture its easy. Everything is based on the Lectures. I didn't read the textbook once and got A's on all the exams. The final Paper is heavy so start the book a month before. But if you understand the Lectures, it's easy.
Online class. Light workload class. Online textbook required. Short lectures with very easy and short writing assignments to confirm you watched. Various readings to supplement video lectures. 30 question timed tests (38 min) x5 for 65% of your grade. If you are not good at tests be weary. Decent online class to take with other hard classes.
She is extremely strict. She has 2 2-point assignment every week which are based on 2 questions and each are a page of an essay. 30 points for the essay which is 6-8 pages, and 4 quizzes which are so complicated to test. there is no review time as the time is so short. overall I would not take this professor again in my life.
This professor is a very good lecturer and her course assignments correlate to her class lecturers perfectly. Attend lectures, take notes, and reach out to her if you need support.
Probably the most uninspiring and unengaging class I have taken in my entire college journey. Dr. Liu's accent is so thick it's really hard to understand her voice lectures. Emphasis on pre recorded voice lectures because you will never really engage with her in any meaningful way. Grade is 65% tests which are highly subjective. Just avoid...
Five test make up 65% of your final grade. If you mess up a couple of them you won't be able to make it up with other assignments. And the tests feel tricky. Weekly assignments are easy but nearly worthless compared to the tests. The professor will not budge on any issues related to your grade.
she is the most awful professor I ever had! she didn't care about the grading and told me that I would still pass with a D! but I rather do it as a pass no pass just because I cared about my GPA while she didn't! I do not recommend her at all
While this class is online, you have to put in the work in order to pass and do the study guides! Professor Liu was very understanding of me redoing my midterm after failing because of the death of a family member and was very compassionate and empathetic towards my mental health compared to other faculty members in the sociology department.
Honestly, the ratings scared me before I took the class but this was one of my easiest classes ever. I watch her lectures and skim the reading to do the weekly homework. The tests were also fairly easy. Just put in some effort and you will do fine.
Professor Liu's class is challenging, but engaging. The weekly assignments are manageable, but the timed exams require serious prep. unstuck AI and the course textbook were essential for staying on top of the material.
I was initially nervous to take this class, but it exceeded my expectations and was my favorite class. If you do your weekly assignments and study for the exams, you will get a good grade. She always gave feedback for my assignments but never gave me lower than a 90. If you show that you genuinely tried and you care, she will give you a good grade.
