This, like all online WS courses at UTEP requires extensive reading and work but with effort and participation an 'A' is really easy to get. Make the time for the assignments and allow your emotions to carry through into them.
I recommend the class just not the professor. She is knowledgable but she was not very organized. She doesn't teach from the textbook but the test only covers what you learn in the text. It also takes her days to explain a project and by the time she finishes explaining your project is due the next day. (This class was during a summer session)
Very knowledgeable teacher, the assignments are straight forward and simple. I learned a lot about media and it opened my mind and was interesting. She will take attendance on random days for a grade. The test is based off of the PowerPoint's and her lecture so you do have to pay attention and listen. Don't buy text book.
Probably one of the best classes I have taken. She is consistent in the kind of work she wants. Reading is very important and analyzing the material as well. Easy as long as you really get what the readings are trying to explain.
She is very inconsistent with her instructions, she sends a sample assignment and expects everyone to follow it, yet it is riddled with misspellings and grammatical errors. Not to mention, the citations are not in the correct format, yet she says to follow it! Do yourself a favor and do not take this course, avoid her at all costs!
Supposed to be "Hybrid" class. Terrible communication. Assignments were stupid. The book was used but I didn't learn anything. EASY A but she's just unorganized and the class is so boring. It's s joke. No tests, no quizzes, extra credit provided. Just a lot of reading but you can totally get away with not reading. Its common sense stuff.
Two thumbs up. Great class!
Small group was very fun but a bit hectic since you did have to show up to class most of the time. She really works with you and it can be confusing at times to keep up since she leaves the class to make up the rules but it is all part of learning in "Small Group" Overall I would take her again!
Relevant material with really good examples.
Interesting and challenging projects. Learned a lot about stereotypes and gender in media
I never thought I could take a class on social media & study gender too. It was an awesome class! It addressed issues of mediated media technology & effects on culture & gender. Highly recommended!
Took her class online. Her assignments were long, but interesting. Her course can be an easy A, but she is big on citations. She can be confusing, but always available to help.
Awesome class in women's studies. The professor is very knowledgeable in media effects. Always met with me ax I needed extra help with my work. I recommend her with all my heart!!!
This is a hard to please professor. In text citing and references must be done correctly. For summer course, large assignments due weekly. She posts examples of students work but even following the examples it is difficult to get an A on assignments. I'm an A student but receiving mid range B's. Not your typical 'easy A' online course. Tedious!
I had her for the summer and she's a sweet lady and I can tell she's very knowledgable about the subject but she assigns too much homework. She thinks her class is the only class her students are taking and thats not usually the case. I do not recommend taking her class if you have a heavy load for the semester.
It was a pretty straight forward class. 12 papers were assigned to write about the topics that was discussed in class. The tests were the same as the notes she gave. Only 1 or 2 questions came from the book which you don't need. She was extremely knowledgeable but the class never participated in the discussions which made the class boring.
We studied media & gender representations. Movies! reality tv! & the different media industries. Great course that was challenging & fun!
Excellent online summer course. An up close study of gender in the media. Assignments are well organized. The grading is fair with extra credit opportunities.
This class was fun & challenging (in the best way). We studied gender & different media. I learned to question the media & to be critical of it. I highly recommend this class.
This class was fun but I also became very critical of how the media exploits women for profit. I recommend it.
Analyzing the media & gender was interesting. I've registered for another one of her courses. I would suggest it for one of your electives. The grading was fair with extra credit. Instructor goes out of her way to help you succeed & do well with your grades.
Great class and fair grading.
Get ready to read and write. Read and follow the assignment instructions and you will do fine on the papers. She pays attention to if you followed the citations requested. If you don't understand something e mail her she does help you to improve your grade by looking that you are trying your best. If do all the work as requested is an easy A.
If taking this class as an elective, pick another. You might find the workload of this course to exceed those of your actual specific degree courses. It's interesting and the articles and supplemental readings and videos are a good read, but if you are not interested in advertising and marketing choose a different course. Save yourself the time.
I loved this class on gender & popular culture! It has been one of my favorites in women's studies. The material and assignments are interesting. The grading is fair and prof. helps you to do your best.
Had this prof. For two classes, she helped me get into graduate school. I learned & was challenged. She's one of my favorites.
Take if this is your only class but it is not worth the workload for an elective. Some of her opinions are outdated and acts as though opinions are facts, and will grade you based on your opinions. Will not be taking her again and wouldn't recommend.
Material isnt always very relevant, she thinks too much into the subject and is very hard on grading. Not an easy class wouldnt take again.
Professor McDonald is an amazing professor. She does give out quick a lot of work but it way work. She is an easy A class.
Would not take another class with her again. Too much work and assignments don't always make sense. Just say the cliche and whatever she wants to hear if you do happen to take her.
Dr. McDonald's course was not difficult at all. She allows students to take their time on assignments and ask questions about them. Although not tough, her assignments and the reading material she chooses are enjoyable and make students think about all that surrounds us. Highly recommend!
Great women's studies class! I learned something new every class. I highly recommend the professor.
Assignments don't always relate to the topic. There is no book so who knows where her info is even coming from. Would not recommend.
although there was homework every class meeting, she was not strict on due dates. I would definitely take another course with her. get ready to read because exams are written no fill in the blank but fairly easy.
Great class with fair grading. Gives many opportunities
every week you will have an assignment. although, these assignments are not that hard it is time consuming. too much work for an elective class. i enjoyed the reading but just the overall work is a lot. the work is definitely not hard, you can finish it in one sitting but work is just unnecessary.
Professor McDonald is very clear in her coursework. You may think her work is a lot but it really isn't. Just make sure you do everything that is listed in the syllabus. Readings are very interesting. TAKE THE CLASS ONLINE! If you need her for anything ask to have a meeting. Honestly, the easiest class I have ever taken.
Prof. McDonald is very sweet and helpful. She does have weekly assignments that may seem too long but the content is not difficult. As long as you read what she assigned and take enough time to complete the assignments, it is an easy A. She gives good feedback and is very helpful if you have any questions. She replies to her email quite fast.
Good course to take with her. Class is mostly discussions, lecture and a weekly journal, you take about 3 exams and a presentation. Tests are easy as long as you payed attention in class and took notes. Easy A if you do whatever she asks you to do
DON'T TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! I did not learn anything during the whole semester and she expects us to know information she is supposed to teach us. Weekly journals that are not hard but seem repetitive. Lectured maybe twice and powerpoints were useless.
i would suggest not taking this professor. while her class is easy, she makes it very uninteresting. she can be a bit dismissive toward students when asked a question on an assignment.
Awesome class! You wont want to miss any lectures, professor cares about each student.
Ws 3340, great class on gender. Lots of opportunities for student participation, more than fair grading and several extra credits. I highly recommend this professor.
Really interesting class on gender & technology. You'll learn a lot I would definitely recommend this class!
I enjoyed Professor McDonalds online course (Gender & Popular Culture). It seemed every other week maintained a schedule, one week had discussions the next we had a pretty lengthy assignment (with proper time to finish), the next week once again discussions so on and so forth. The readings are not long. Course material is easy to understand.
Ive had this professor for two classes. Would definitely recommend. The material is always interesting & youll always be able to reach her if you need anything with the class
Had this professor for three classes I would definitely recommend her. She will work with you and the class is fun.
This was a 4 week summer course. Very few assignments but the few that we had there was a lot of reading and work to do. The assignments are very long but she does try to help your grade with discussions and so forth. As long as you do the work you'll be fine but you do have to work for the grade. She does have very SPECIFIC instructions but doable
Reading and reading responses. Easy grading, do the homework not hard to understand the class. Just keep up with assignments. More on the opinionated side and she'll give feedback if she feels like you might have missed the point on a reading question response. Tests and quizzes are straight from the text.
This course was easy, but do be ready to do a lot of work. One assignment usually has 3 or four parts to it and they are lenghty but not difficult at all. Make sure you read and you will do just fine
Professor McDonald makes Pop Culture a horrible class. She is rude in her emails and on the phone when you ask for clarification or help. The readings are not difficult, but expect to write A LOT!!!! Due to the pandemic its a self taught course with VERY LITTLE guidance. Steer clear of this professor!
I would recommend this professor. The grading is very fair, and there is extra credit. The topics are really interesting and I learned so much.
Amazing professor that gives good feedback. Assignments are tedious but if you read they should be easy to get through.
although the assignments were easy- HER ASSIGNMENTS ARE RIDICULOUSLY LONG. i took her for two courses at a time- biggest mistake HER ASSIGNMENTS ARE SUPER TIME CONSUMING. She is an easy grade if u have a lot of free time, i had to stop working so much at my partime job because of her lengthy assignments. Yes i got an A+ but i had to do LOTS of work
The only reason I wouldn't take this professor again is because of the types of assignments she gives. The assignments have several parts, require a lot of reading, and research. She does give you a good amount of time to complete them, but its just so much work and it's draining.
I have taken her twice already. The work is not hard but it is time consuming. As long as you put forth an effort, you will pass with an A. In emails and phone calls she does sound bothered if you ask too many questions and do not understand something. It is manageable if you are not lazy. Just read and follow her instructions.
This was my third class with professor Mcdonald. She helped me get an internship, and cares a lot about hers students. The class work was so eye opening in gender studies. Hope you get a chance to take this class.
Great class in popular culture! Professor made it fun. The research and discussions were my favorite. She gives several extra credits so youll be able to do well with the final grade. I do recommend this class.
Great course. Professor cares about the students and will help everyone to do their best. I definitely recommend this class.
Overall this was an amazing class, learned so much about gender studies. You can easily reach her should you need anything she responded quickly to all of my questions. She was very kind in her grading. I suggest this class to all students.
The class was really interesting & fun. Had plenty of time to complete class work & it's a good combination of regular assignments & discussions. The grading is very fair with lots of extra credit. I do suggest taking this professor.
Professor McDonald was great! The assigned readings are super informative. She cares about her students and is always willing to help. Her assignments are a bit long but she gives students plenty of time to complete them. Overall, great professor!
Great professor, you’ll learn a lot. She really cares and will work with.
Really a great class! the grading is more than fair with several opportunities for extra credit, the professor is very generous with these. Learned so much about gender, the class was very interesting all semester. I would highly recommend it.
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR! Honestly one of the best Professors I have had throughout my college education. You do need the textbook for her class but the textbook is very interesting. Learned a lot and got an A+.
Prof Mcdonald was interesting. I had a bit of trouble understanding the classwork because the course was online. She is very picky as to how she wants citations done (this can either make or break your grade) all her assignments were pretty heavy and time-consuming. No multiple-choice test ever.
Great professor! She is very clear on assignment instructions and is understanding if something goes wrong. I truly enjoyed her class! I recommend taking her class!
Great class and professor. I learned so much about gender in our society. The professor will also work with you and can always be reached outside of class
Professor is very knowledgeable in her field. If you ever need anything from Professor McDonald she is one email away from help you. She gives more than adequate time to complete weekly assignments, just be careful on how you format homework because she is very detailed about them. It was a pleasure having her as an instructor.
Great class. Professor McDonald is helpful and is easily reached. Learned a lot I definitely recommend this prof. And class
The course was harder than expected, but she was accessible at all times through email. Lots of papers
I have no problems with McDonald other than the fact that I had no clue what any of the assignments were due until it was posted. I feel like online is all about scheduling the courses effectively and in her class every assignment we had was due on a different day depending on the week.
Not worth the time and stress for it to be a block elective. The assignments were very lengthy were very strict rules on how she wanted them to look.
Great semester, great class, great professor! I highly recommend prof. McDonald --- fun assignments and engaging lectures.
gender & popular culture is my favorite class so far. I have had professor mcdonald for three classes and they have all been interesting. she is very fair with grading and even generous and is easily reached outside of class. very helpful, she even helped me get a scholarship and a perferct internship.
DO NOT pay attention to the negative reviews. I was in a groupme for this class & the other students were acting like this class was impossible; IT'S NOT. Yes, there is a pretty hefty amount of work, but it's not impossible. Many assignments have you evaluating media, like Disney movies, and summarizing chapters. You get a whole week to do the work
Really good class, I waited until the end of the semester to post this and honestly the best class I've taken at UTEP. The professor is more than fair with grading and very generous with the extra credit. She cares! I highy recommend Professor Mcdonald.
Really good class. I waited until the end of the semester to post this. The professor grades fairly and is very generous with extra credit. This is one of the best classes I've take at UTEP. She cares! I highly recommend Professor Mcdonald.
I've had two classes with this professor and have enjoyed both of them. The work and grading is always more than fair and the assignments and research are all on media. I would definitely recommend professor mcdonald.
I honestly loved all of the class work on technology, very up to date information. Professor Mcdonald also help me with my resume and getting an internship. This is a great class.
The popular culture class has been my favorite at UTEP. All of the work is interesting and relates to media. Gained a lot of skills in critical thinking and I have become a better writer with this class. The professor is always available to help and really cares about her students.
This class was perfect. The topic on media was interesting and fun. She is very knowledgeable in media. professor mcdonald gives plenty of time for each assignment and they are enjoyable to work on. She is also available outsde of class for any help needed.
Good class, the research assignments were engaging and I looked forward to working on each one. Professor Mcdonald helped me to improve my writing and research abilities. She also helped me with recommendations and writing essays for grad school and an internship. I recommend this class and professor.
Learned so much in this class, one of the best I've taken. Professor Mcdonald is very approachable and helps whatever is needed, she is very knowledgeable about the media and gender studies. I do recommend this class.
The popular culture class was a great course and professor mcdonald is really knowledgeable on media. I learned new things and how to be more critical of all the media I use. The professor ia always available to answer questions and emails are answered quickly. She works with students. I do highly recommend this class.
A lot of the assignments required specific formatting but the formatting for assignments was given repeatedly. There were few enough assignments that missing one meant going down a letter grade. Reading the textbook was also important to each assignment. Professor was good at communicating the exact criteria to pass the class.
Really enjoyed this class, it covers popular culture. Professor is always there to help, one of my favorite classes, so far. I would strongly recommend this class
Professor Mcdonald's reviews might say you should not take her course but in reality, you shouldn't be scared first of all you will need the BOOK it is important secondly her assignments are super easy the thing is how she HEAVILY grades citations from in-text citations to References if you have any questions from her she is always available
Great class! I got the perfect internship because of the career project that the professor assigns for the semester. One of the best classes I've taken at UTEP and I would definitely recommend this professor.
very easy summer course, only had about four assignments, two discussion boards and one quiz, you will need a textbook, but isn't too expensive. would highly recommend taking this course if you need to fill a fine arts credit or whichever this course fits under
Worst profesor ever
I'd be weary of the reviews, a lot of them are bot-like praising this lady with the exact same rating numbers... This is an absurdly difficult class, she goes tooth and nail looking for any tiny tear in your assignment so she can turn it into a ravine. The work isn't a lot but you need to do it CORRECT and make it as perfect as possible.
I enjoyed my time taking WS3331 with McDonald, sure, many people say she is a tough grader but if you stick to her instructions and give your best effort you will be graded accordingly to your effort. McDonald was very kind and willing to help out with any questions or concerns, if I could take another course with her again I would.
Do not take this class!! It is so much work and so much reading. She grades so heavily. She makes you put a work sited page and a word count in every assignment. The exams are not multiple choice, they have 5 parts and take HOURS to complete. You have to purchase a book. I never leave comments on this but this professor was just way too much.
I suggest not taking this professor if you want to suffer. She heavily grades and makes you do unnecessary assinments. Gender studies is much better without her, very rude and unprofessional. Please avoid at all costs, find another professor who actually cares and wants to teach you about gender studies. Worst professor at UTEP.
One of the best classes and professors I've taken at UTEP. Very knowledgeable about media industries and how gender fits into this. I definitely recommend taking this professor.
She was great, I found the assignment confusing at first but then she gave me the option to call her and she was helpful. The assignment was helpful and the feedback was useful. She is kind of rude and abrasive but she does her job and helps you.
Didn't have a syllabus to follow. If you mess up even a bit in the references, like forgetting to italicize, you lose many points. She was cold and did not accept an assignment that I submitted 3 minutes late cause I had a 12-hour work shift. Acussed me of plagiarism for shortening a quote that I cited and demanded proof that I had bought the book.
WARNING! Professor McDonald is the DISASTROUS online course for WS 3331. Do not select and leave immediately! It was hardest to ensure the writing proofreading is perfect and you won't get full credits because of a penalties. I answered carefully how to cite the references, but I had a penalties. SHE IS VERY RUDE IN E-MAIL AND CONTACTING WITH HER.
These positive rates don't even have a truth with Professor McDonald. If you have one on register, don't go to this class! The penalties grade can hurt your success. Don't even bother her to ask anything. The assignments and homework are the hardest ways to write a short essay or writing down the answers which is bad that we're confused to follow.
Professor McDonald is very helpful for anyone that has questions. There are no exams or final. The assignments are a bit lengthy but not hard to do, just time consuming but she gives plenty of time to complete them. She offers extra credit opportunities.
Not very many assignments, she gives sufficient time too complete the work. Her grading criteria is kind of confusing and she has a lot of directions that are hard to follow at times. Overall not a bad class
DO NOT take her, way too many assignments and so much criteria to follow, I ended the class with A, but she really does not make any sense at all, contradicts herself a lot on the assignments, you do have to get the book and there is no pdf. Very few extra credit opportunities, you do have to give this class all of your time, don't take her.
The professor was strict when it came to assignments, like making sure you cite your sources properly and making sure nothing is plagiarized. Just make sure you're following directions closely and you should be good.
Great class! We had a digital portfolio project, and I got my Internship with this! Really nice professor who cares
I took this class for a short summer session. Very well organized and professor sent many reminders of upcoming due times, she also provided some readings to give time to get the book. I thought the assignments were interesting & fun to do research. The professor graded fairly I would have only liked more extra credit.
This class wasn't good for you if you register with WS 3331 with this instructor will hurts your grade & you don't know how to properly cite the references. It is a very hard class due to struggling trying to pass this class. Then I have only few grades with B and A score earned. DON'T RISK IT, the positive rates will fool you to fail this class.
Great class! One of the best I've taken. Plenty of time to do the work, and super fair with grading. Fun topics on media representations. I recommend this class
If you needed the WS 3331, DO NOT pick this professor! You will find the ways very confusing, disorganize, harder, and rude in this class that can lowering your grades. This is A VERY RISKY CLASS that she'd scold you after submission works for not having proper citation and answering very well. Few extra credits and unable get help for make up.
Please stay away from this professor. This online course is very incompetence inside her blackboard system because everything is disarray. She is not a fair grading if you don't know how to follow and not writing down properly. You will find the stress and hard time to keep up in her class.
Avoid for taking this professor. It's a biggest problems and worst class experience. The assignments were heavy and not sure how hard you try to cite the work correctly before she will loose your grade points. It is very confusing to follow and huge stress out what's going on with a feedback given after she grading each works.
I DO NOT RECOMMEND WS 3331. The difficult level is harsh. It was strict, vague, overwhelming, and painful. You needed carefully find a right textbook and I'm not doing good to make citations on her homework when she said “those will be heavily grading.” But this online course feels me walking inside the hardest maze is struggle to looking around.
Professor does NOT accept late work. Tried talking to her about circumstances that affected my participation, she was slightly condescending towards me when she spoke but overall decent professor.
Good class for an elective, the content was really interesting. The professor grades fairly, and gives exceptions as needed for class. I would definitely recommend this class
I enjoyed this class & learned about the media. It was a good class with a very attentive & kind prof
The book is definitely needed, the professor is easy to reach and there's a lot of extra credit. The topics were super interesting and the grading was always fair. Good class!
Super interesting class on different media, professor cares how you're doing, just let her know should you need anything. I became a better writer taking this class.
If you needed to find the WS 3331 for elective. Please do not pick this professor. It is not easy to navigate her blackboard online courses and it's very hard how to properly work with writing assignments and a citation before she can deduct your grades when you didn't know what happened to a mistaken parts. She can belittle in feedback and chat.
