Prof. Meyering is by far the best math prof I have ever had. I really don't get the negative comments here. As long as you pay attention and do the homework, study for tests, it is not hard to get an A in this class. Ruth is a really smart person who is very passionate about math, and is willing to help you if you ask for it, but sometimes her teaching method is just confusing. If you're already good at math, take her and it will be a breeze.

Took Meyering for 123 (trig). If you put the work in outside of class by reading the textbook chapters, studying material, and doing the webworks and book questions, you will be fine. A lot of this was a review from my high school years so it wasn't too hard for me. Meyering cares about her students and is an amazing lady!

An absolute sweetheart. I still use her notes to this day. Extremely easy to understand and made calculus comprehensible. I always felt well prepared for each test and always understood the material given. I would love to have her again as a professor!

Prof Meyering is a very caring person, but the way she teaches makes it difficult to follow along. She gives a lot of examples but jumps pretty fast from problem to problem with little to no explanation of how she got the answers. Lots of homework (both online and papers she gives you) and there are group projects.

Do not take her. You get HUNDREDS of problems with no idea how to do them, and you don't get the answers to them. Miss one day and your grade will drop 5% in the course bc of some worksheet. Tests/quizzes are incredibly hard, pop assignments/quizzes in class, and she is rude. Super nice 1-on-1, but horrible in class. Your GPA will hate you!

I DESPISE math and she def makes u put in the work via TONS of assignments/projects. the thing is it's easy. She will literally guide you on questions on tests if you ask her. She doesnt make it a challenge. She dropped some grades so dont fret on ALL the hw. I did feel a little small talking to her at times but she seems actually caring.

Prof Meyering was an ok professor, but is a caring person. The class consists of 3 group projects, homework assignments, quizzes and exams. She does not let you make anything up! I forgot to turn in 1 homework assignment all semester and she refused to let me turn it in for any points. Not the worst professor but not my fav!

Professor Meyering is an okay professor I have taken two classes instructed by her and earned high grades in both. She is snarky/condescending in class but great one-on-one. You will not do well in class if you don't read the textbook and do the homework assignments. Expect to have homework every day!

She was an extremely caring person. Teaching myself got me through the class. The lectures are a little unorganized. She is amazing at one on one. She wants you to succeed and will describe exactly what is on the tests and prepare you well. There is a ton of work in this class, sometimes you will have 2 calc-essays (portfolios) due per week.

Pre-calc is a hard class but she makes it very clear what is on quizzes and tests and won't throw any curveballs or trick questions on them. She makes a point to learn everyone's names very quickly. She has very clear expectations and is especially helpful if you go to office hours.

I absolutely loved Professor Meyering. Probably the most caring professor I've ever had and truly wants every one of her students to succeed. There are three groups projects which are somewhat annoying, and she gives what could be considered a lot of homework, but she is the most accessible and helpful professor ever. She deserves a higher rating.

Prof continuously tells you to "put your heads together" during lecture, implying that you need to work with your group mates to figure things out. She assigns way too much homework that I barely have time for my other major classes. Her lectures are based on activities only, and she provides little to no instruction.

There is a lot of work and this class is hard so make a group and help eachother. It is doable if you stay on track. In terms of teaching, I think she does a great job. I took her pre-calc class last semester and would take calc 2 with her if she taught it. There is a review packet for every test and she is straightforward about what is expected.

Amazing professor. Daily homework but you have enough time to get it done. Calc is a hard course but she does a good job of explaining it. Get a textbook b/c it's used daily in class. She wants you to succeed so take advantage of her office hours. Overall a great prof & a kind, caring, & very understanding person. I would definitely take her again!

Aweful... Do not take Ruth for Trigonometry if you need a high college GPA. This professor will ruin yours. I am an A level student who puts in the work to succeed and I can say this class was more difficult than both my Organic Chemistry classes and my high level Anatomy classes. This is simply because of her teaching style, a mess.

Professor Meyering is a great professor. She has a old school type of learning mentality of very much paper to pencil. Lots of homework is given but after her course you will master Calc 1. I would recommend her class to anyone who truly wants to understand Calc and not just fly through it. Be ready for a lot of work.

Ruth was a kind person, but a terrible professor. I can say I did not learn a single thing from her mess of what she calls lectures. There is no structure to the class and you constantly feel like your going in circles. Had to teach myself everything and struggled for a B... 10/10 would not recommend.

the worst prof I've ever had. Teaches horribly then blames the students when they aren't understanding. gave 3 group papers (this is a math class so??). Left class knowing less than what I knew when I walked in. so much hw, and she doesn't give test reviews, so tests are a guessing game. Save yourself the misery and take literally anyone else.

I like her as a person, as a teacher I do not. She is super nice and caring, but this was by far one of the worst classes I have taken at Grand Valley. I walked in knowing trig in high School. She made me feel like I knew nothing. I ended up having to get a tutor and even my tutor didn't know some of things she assigned to us.

It's a lot of homework. You can really tell it's a 4 credit class instead of 3. That being said, you can skim by by not doing some, but it is in your best interest to do the it because most of the questions are really difficult the first time, which is really bad if your first time seeing them is the test. Do homework = easy. Not do homework = hard

Professor Meyering expected us to learn a majority of the material outside of class, allowing us to pick up bad habits and learning concepts incorrectly. This class felt more like an English class as throughout the semester as we had 8 "math essays". Be prepared to have a lot of homework.

She is a good professor for a hard subject, she's willing to meet outside of class and does not look down on questions or taking time to explain past concepts. If you have the opportunity to have her for calculus I'd take it; just start conversations on day 1 and ask questions early and she'll guide you through the course.

Professor Meyering is passionate about teaching and supports her students. I connected well with her style, and she explained tough topics clearly. However, the class is very homework-heavy and requires a lot of prep. I spent more time on this course than any other. The extra work was often tedious and made it hard to focus on the harder parts.
