Teaching material is easy and understandable but the exams are insanely hard. Doesnt curve and also grades homework very hard. Not my favorite
Ruth has been one of my favorite professors at Pitt! She has a great sense of humor and wants her students to do well. Quizzes are open notes and 2 are dropped. Exams can be difficult, but if you understand the homework and study her lecture notes youll do fine. If you dont pay attention or skip class, then youll definitely struggle.
Ruth is an amazing professor. She is down to earth and really cares about her students. Her exams are a bit difficult, so you have to make sure you take good notes in class and prepare ahead of time. She allows you to drop two quizzes, allows a two-sided sheet of notes for each exam (two for the final), and allots bonus points. Overall great prof!
Ruth did a fantastic job of taking a topic like statistics and making it interesting. The topics were explained clearly and concisely. Ruth seemed genuinely concerned about our understanding of statistics. The exams were hard, but fair. She did have flexibility in her grading by allowing us to drop two quizzes. Pitt is lucky to have Ruth!
Professor Mihalyi is definitely one of the best professors I have had so far. You do your work, attend class, pay attention, and study for the tests. You will be fine. If you need extra help, she is EXTREMELY accessible and super caring. She also offers plentiful amounts of extra credit throughout the semester. 10/10 would take again.
She's one of the most sweetest professors I know. She genuinely cares about whether or not you understand the material. She can drop in short life anecdotes here and there. Tests and quizzes are absolutely fine if you study and do the homework. You don't have to tend the lectures to pass because they are online. Questions? Office-hours are great!
Ruth is such a sweetheart. She really cares about her students and loves statistics. She is always willing to help and easy to talk to. I had her for honors stats and I have never taken a stats course before and I did completely fine. However, she does not give the slides out before class, so be sure to take good notes.
Ruth is a gem. I adore Ruth. She is such an impressive, brilliant statistician. She makes the subject approachable and genuinely cares about you and how you're doing. In a lecture of over 50 people, she learned my name and others as well. I always hated math, but I really enjoyed this class. Her lectures are great, and you should take her classes.
I love Ruth! I had never taken a stat class before this so I was a little nervous but with Ruth's amazing lectures I was able to get an A! The tests are a little difficult but you're allowed a double-sided sheet of notes for each exam and two for the final. She was extremely approachable and very accessible outside of class. Overall, great prof!
This class was surprisingly easy. The hardest thing was the weekly homework which is graded. There were also multiple extra credit opportunities that bring up your homework grade. All the quizzes are open note and you are allowed to bring in a double-sided note sheet for the tests.
I would try to avoid Ruth. She wasn't that engaging and would bash other classes to ours as well as ours to others. She makes backhanded jokes about students and it becomes awkward because majority of the class is either not paying attention or didn't find it funny and she is waiting for a response.
I took AP stat in high school and I would say that I learned more in that class than this one. I did not think this class was taught in an organized way and I relied on a lot of what I learned in the past to do well. The tests were pretty straightforward however and we were allowed cheat sheets.
Lectures were boring but the professor goes at a slow pace and does multiple examples so students can understand. Two midterms and a final, 6 quizzes, and homework assignments almost every week. Pretty easy class. You can do well with minimal effort. Recitation isn't required and it covers the same material as lecture so only go if you need it.
I learned NOTHING in this class- attended lectures, went to tutoring/office hours- and I desperately need this material for my major. She uses another prof's slides, doesn't actually explain the material, assumes students took a Stat class before. The only thing that saved my grade was the cheat sheets for tests, which I put together from YouTube.
Attendance isn't mandatory but the lectures are helpful
Get ready to learn on your own and do TONS of homework! Class is boring and she assumes that everyone has taken a stats class before, so she flies through the material. Recitations aren't helpful, but she is there if you need her through email and office hours. Cheat sheets for tests were a life saver, so you can pass tests!
Professor Mihalyi was a decent professor. People tend to dislike her because Business Stats is designed in a way that is so fast-paced and content heavy. A LOT of homework every week and the exams were pretty hard. This class starts out very easy but becomes difficult very quick so try and do very well on the first exam. Lots of extra credit also!
Ruth is so nice! Stats is a hard subject but she teaches it exactly how it should be taught. Although the homework is hard, it prepares for the exam. You get to have a cheat sheet out during every exam with formulas or whatever you can fit. Even not knowing her personally, she is too nice to the students ! Exams are fair too.
There is a homework due once a week and the material is not the easiest, but if you go to class and pay attention she makes the concepts very clear. I did very well on the exams with average amounts of studying. She also gives several heavy extra credit opportunities. She is a great professor and wants you to do well.
Shes really nice and accommodating, and coming from someone who really doesnt understand math, she broke down concepts and explained them well enough that I actually knew what was going on.
I highly recommend taking Ruth's class. She is a very caring woman and wants her students to do well. She offers some extra credit by showing up to recitation. The homework required a lot of work and when I had the class was graded on correctness but I believe that changed since. She allows. cheat sheets for exams.
Professor Mihalyi is super nice, a little droll, but nice nonetheless. However, this is where her accolades stop. At first, I thought she did a fine job at teaching the content, until I made it to the homework assignments, tests, and quizzes. None of the content of those assignments were in her lectures, so I was left to struggle on my own.
Last semester was a tough time as the coronavirus pandemic was starting, but Ruth always accommodated for everyone and allowed extra credit opportunities. Even though she has a lot of students, she very easily remembers people. Her lectures are easy to follow and she always posts a template in advance that you can take notes on.
Really nice lady, but the class is hard. Online isn't very well laid-out. She assumes most people have already taken stats, moves really quickly. Also has 5 homework assignments due on one day instead of spreading them out. She also realized she didn't get enough assignments and gave 2 quizzes 2 homeworks and a lab due the last week of class.
Very nice and a pretty good teacher. Very accessible outside of class. The topics are difficult but there are opportunities to raise your grade.
Ruth was a great teacher. Made it very clear the expectation for what we needed to know and gave great examples. Engaging lectures & safe learning environment. Took AP Stat in HS but didn't remember a single thing from it, i felt like i actually learned this time. Grade based on 2 exams, a final, biweekly hw, and a couple easy quizzes/ excel labs.
Professor Mihalyi was very nice lady and is more than willing to work with you to help you understand it. Tests are 100% fair. As long as you listen to her lectures and check in with her to make sure you understand the content you will not have too much trouble with the class.
Great person and even better teacher! 8 Homeworks all year and pretty much easy as long as you pay attention to the lectures and take decent notes. Tests are easier than the homework so it does a good job to prepare you. Quizzes and Labs are even easier.
Professor Mihalyi is super kind and obviously cares about her students well being. She is cognizant that we have classes outside of her own and she works with us when we need some assistance. The homework is really easy but helps you a lot for the exams and it has unlimited tries per question. She also does lots of review sessions before exams!
Professor Mihalyi genuinely cares about her students and is a solid professor. She posted asynchronous lectures and held review sessions every week. The material gets somewhat difficult halfway through and she does a really good job engaging studen. There's a good bit of homework but it's doable and the exams are usually a direct reflection of it.
This was my first time taking a statistics class, but I felt like I had taken it before with how well Ruth taught. She held review sessions before tests which were helpful and the homework is a great way to learn the material in addition to watching the asynchronous lectures. She offers a lot of extra credit and the tests aren't very hard.
Lectures were asynchronous but she had non-mandatory review meetings. Really allowed you to learn the content whenever was convenient for you. Homeworks are due in chunks (3 due at the same time after a month) so easily able to plan ahead. Had straight A's A+'s on everything until the final (D range? oops) and still got an A-. Mihalyi was v sweet.
There is a decent amount of homework but she gives access to it months in advance so its easy to plan. Exams are just like the homework - no surprises. Quizzes are pretty easy and the excel labs are as well. She's also understanding and records all classes. - This comes from a student that doesn't enjoy math
Nicest prof I've ever had. She genuinely cares about her students and seeing them succeed. Make sure to watch the lectures and do the homework because the information builds on previous units. Always available through email or office hours and tests were very straightforward. Take Ruth for Stat!!!!
Professor Mihalyi is the sweetest. She's really funny and ties stats into real world examples. Stat 0800 is a really easy class; definitely ideal if you're not great at math and your department takes it as a credit. She lets you take two sheets of paper with front and back notes for exams and drops the lowest exam score. LOTS of extra credit ops!
I can't recommend Professor Mihalyi enough. She truly was an amazing professor. It's clear that she cares about her students. The class is made up of 3 tests, 1 of which you can drop, some quizzes, and homework. She lectures really well and everything is easy to follow. If you're looking for an easy stat class, this is the one for you.
Professor Mihalyi is a very caring teacher. You get graded on several things, and you can use cheat sheets/notes on most tests/quizzes which is helpful. There's problem sets for homework every week, but it is not too difficult. She is very easy to reach outside of class as well. Overall, it is a hard class, but she is a solid teacher.
Professor Mihalyi is wonderful. Her lectures are easy to understand and very engaging, and she gives many opportunities to ask for help and gain more understanding for homework and exams. She is also very fair in her grading and gives extra credit. She made me love statistics; I couldn't ask for anything more in a professor!
It's really important to pay attention and take good notes because information builds and she moves quickly. Besides that, she is really nice and very easy to reach. She drops the two lowest quiz grades and offers opportunities for extra credit. For the exams, you're allowed a cheat sheet. Overall, the work is manageable if you stay on top of it.
She is a very kind professor who really appreciates the balance between school work and life. She is values her students' success and makes math entertaining for students of all different fields of interest.
HONORS section: the homework was a bit of a slog but the tests are pretty fair. The honors part is basically just a seminar section where everyone does 2 presentations/semester (a bit of busywork tbh), the actual topics are basically just normal stat1000 topics. She's a good lecturer. She is sort of weirdly loose about covid though...
Best professor to have. She gives plenty of opportunities for extra credit. The lectures are clear and easy to understand but I recommend going to the lectures so you get the most information you can. There are homework and quizzes that are not hard and can boost your grade. Everything she gives out is fair.
She was an amazing teacher! She obviously wants her students to succeed. She is accessible, lectures aren't super difficult, and she allows a note sheet to be used for tests. The homework assignments are a bit long, but it isn't anything un-doable.
Ruth was amazing! Math is NOT my strong suit by any means, but she makes this class super easy. There are 2 exams and a final, but you are able to use 2 pages of notes front and back (4 total) on all of it. HW is all online and you have 5 attempts. She gives a lot of extra credit and sometimes will give bonus points when you show up to class.
Wasn't overly difficult and had adequate expectations for intro level course. Very nice lady and actually made lectures kind of entertaining. Told us what to study, but the homework sets became crazy busy work. Highly recommend her overall.
lots of extra credit, recitation is extra credit, homework counts as much as the 2 midterms- helps boost your grade, cheat sheet for the exams. her lectures can be boring and hard to keep up with, but still go to class cause it helps. cares about her students doing well, drops 2 lowest lab/quizzes grades, definitely recommend her
Professor Mihalyi was amazing. She was able to make statistic lectures interesting and engaging. She was also very funny and understanding that no one wanted to be there. Her tests are all based off of her lectures so make sure you go to class and take notes. Not too much homework but when it is given, it really boosts your grade.
Liked: small class size, multiple-choice tests w/ extra credit, 2 presentations for a grade boost Disliked: working with R (it's like a computer program); the TA graded the HW super hard and had no office hours (not Dr. Mihalyi's fault) Overall, she is a really caring professor who makes sure the class is fair :)
Slow to respond to emails, lecture heavy, repetitive, and didn't seem to be aware of our struggles.
Best stat prof at Pitt easily. Her extra credit can carry you even if you do badly on tests. The content isn't very difficult and she's always willing to help you out. Very cheerful and provides you with everything you need for class. Even online HW gives you multiple chances. If you need to satisfy gen ed or stat req then take this prof 100%
I really enjoyed my class with Dr. Mihalyi! she gives TONS of extra credit. 3 exams with 1 dropped, and a final, plus some quizzes and weekly homework. She's very sweet and lectures are usually easy to follow. Show up to class and do your work and you will get an A!
Ruth is easily one of the best professors I've had. She clearly cares about her students and wants them to succeed. Her office hours were super helpful! Having prior experience with stats, I didn't find the class too difficult and it felt more like a review.
She made everything pretty easy for us, and she even provided us with handwritten notes sometimes.
Surprisingly easy class for 4 credits. Homework is ~1/hr a week. Attend lectures and pay attention and you'll have nothing to worry about as far as exams go. Recitations teach excel and have announced quizzes and review sessions. Its safe to skip the excel practice if you already have a rudimentary understanding of excel.
Super nice and genuine person who cares about her students. Lectures are very informative and as long you attend you will do good in the class. She is a big believer in not trying to trick students and sticks to that. Homework and quizzes are very doable, and recitations are only mandatory during quiz and lab days.
Best stat professor ever. Genuinely cares about her students. Homework is not hard and does not take a lot of class. Gives lots of opportunities for extra credit, and attending recitation counts as extra credit. Only two midterms and a final. She does not believe in tricking students on exams, the questions are always very straightforward. 10/10 :)
Prof. Mihalyi is one of the best professors I've had at Pitt. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to learn. You can tell how much she enjoys teaching and she does a great job at making statistics easy to understand. Would 100% recommend to anyone who needs to take a stat class.
Do the homework show up to class and you should be fine. She is very approachable and explains the material well. Grades are fair too. You'll get out what you put in.
Ruth is amazing. She is so friendly and is willing to answer any questions you have at anytime pretty much. One thing you need to be careful about in her class is that she goes so fast during lectures. She'll flip through the slides so quickly (she doesn't post the fully filled out slides on Canvas) so you need to take very quick notes.
Lectures the entire time with some problems sprinkled into the lecture. Does not post the slides from lecture online so go to lecture. Very kind, but sometimes passive aggressive (when people leave mid lecture or use their phone the whole time). Overall, I was satisfied with taking professor Mihalyi.
doesnt post the lecture slides or record her classes.couldn't understand a word she said because she believes everyone had previous stats knowledge.gets mad for people leaving her boring lecture when she cant even explain, had to teach myself everything.makes you do extra credit, but wont put it in why make me do it if you're not gonna put it in.
Ruth is spectacular. I would highly recommend taking her. She is so sweet and honestly very subtly hilarious. I found STATS impossible, but she honestly makes it a lot easier to kind of understand. She likes if you participate in class and actually talk to her. Also GO TO OFFICE HOURS, she is amazing at one-on-one help if you struggle with math.
Sweetest person ever. Must go to lecture to get the notes. All recitations are extra credit but there will be quizzes and labs in them, so go. No dropping homework so complete it, but you can get 50% credit after due date. Sometimes is fast when going through slides but just speak up she will go back. She allows notes on exams so prepare them!
Aside from being a little bit all over the place, her classes were great. Slow-paced enough for everyone to understand. Some lectures better than others. Easy homework and quizzes. Extra credit heavy! Did all of them (easy). Understanding but don't miss homework, it'll only be 50% no matter what. Easy class for gen ed! Take if can.
Ruth was such a sweet professor and wanted the best for her students, loads of extra credit was offered throughout the semester from recitation and other things. Class is lecture-heavy, and she is super straight forward with what will be on the exams (and allowed a cheat sheet). My only complaint is that lectures are not posted, so attend class.
She tried to make everything understandable, but I personally find her way of explaining a little confusing. You'll definitely do better if you already took a stats class. You get multiple chances to get 100% on hw and can have a cheat sheet on exams- which aren't very difficult. You don't need to go to every class but the lectures aren't posted.
AMAZING professor. So many extra credit opportunities/some online quizzes and she walks us through the basics of stats. She goes a little fast during lecture and does not post the lecture slides, so pay attention. Even though I was not that locked in, I learned a lot.
Ruth is knowledgeable but goes very fast in lecture. She also doesn't post the notes so you have to be in class to get the notes. You get extra credit for going to recitation. The exams are comparable to the homework but the homework can be time consuming. Overall, its important to pay attention in this class in order to do well
This class was very easy and we took each topic very slowly, just make sure to do the online assignments. Attendance in lectures is not required, and I would def reccomend for the stats gen ed!
Ruth was a great professor. Provided lots of extra credit and had lots of resources for exams. Super easy class if you pay attention, and as a non-STEM major I would definitely recommend.
Very kind and understanding of her students. 2 exams, a few quizzes, and each of 5 hw assignments were worth as much as the exams. If you do the homework and go to class it's impossible to fail. I took stats in hs so I felt this class was very easy, but generally good professor who gives you everything you need to do well.
Took Stats for a Gen Ed requirement and was so scared because I am not a math person! This class ended up being great. Ruth is so caring and wants her students to succeed. Office hours were so helpful and the extra credit helps to boost your grade. Take this class if you need a gen ed requirement for stats!!!!
Easiest math class ever. Class was 1:15 minutes and we usually got out early. Go to lecture because she doesn't always post the finished powerpoints, but if half listen you'll get an A. We literally were doing mean/median/mode/range for half the year. There's extra credit assignment and she drops one quiz, but you get multiple tries on HW/quizzes.
Ruth is one of my favorite professors I've had at Pitt. She's so kind and understanding, she really wants you to succeed. She gets very disheartened if you're being disrespectful during class so please stay off your phone and give her respect while teaching, her lectures are really interesting. I love her 10/10 would take again.
She talks a little to fast and it's hard to follow for me personally I'm hoping to at least pull though with a B or B+ she seems to get upset over the little things I just need her to slow down I'm stressed because I can't follow her when she talks so fast but looking at the reviews other people have had this problem.
Trying to understand what she was saying during lecture was honestly my 13th reason, her lectures are all the same format and its slides the whole semester, lectures are very boring and she goes on rants about the most random things, I ended up having to learn like 60% of what we learned in class on my own, she also would bully kids outta no where
She was pretty good. I had a stat background already before I got into the class so I was okay, but I think it would be harder if I didn't. Recitation attendance is extra credit but quizzes are kind of hard even though they're open note. Not a bad teacher, she lectures and you have to be there to get the notes.
Overall good teacher. We use guided notes in class, but she does not usually post the notes completed, so you have to be in class to get them. Sometimes teaches a little fast. We were allowed cheat sheets on the midterms and the final.
Prof. Mihalyi goes above and beyond to make sure her students succeed. She's really good at teaching and explaining tough concepts. If you show up for class, do the homework, and ask for help when you need it, you'll do well in her class.
Dr. Mihalyi has been nothing short of great, but the problem is the TA she was assigned was absolutely horrendous. Like flat out does not explain anything, hes super mean, and the way he grades makes no sense and it really sucks since quite literally 30% of your grade is dictated by your recitation work and lab. His name is Jiazhi He.
Ruth is a good professor. I got the flu and was in the ER the day before an exam and she let me reschedule (other profs were not as accommodating). Homework can be a lot sometimes but it's manageable. The only downside is the recitation labs which are done on R. This would be better if it wasn't for the awful TA for recitation-- Jiazhi is awful.
I love Ruth! So caring, funny and kind, and knows how to lecture. She doesnt post finished slides so make sure to go to class. Recitation is extra credit, extremely accessible, with work with you on everything. Take her if you can!
So so so caring and sweet. Her lectures weren't mandatory, but super helpful if you try to ignore the tangents she goes on. It's designed to be a super easy class, but that doesn't mean you can't give up.
She cares a lot about students and answers emails quickly. Lectures are mandatory but she doesn't post completed slides. HW can be hard - you lose points for every wrong answer until you get it right. Recitaions can be hard because you have to use R and are not taught how to use it. Quizzes aren't bad, and recitation attendance is extra credit.
Ruth is cool and nice! but frankly her exams are a little harsh like the 2nd exam was really hard for no reason but the final was really lax relative to the 2nd exam! But after taking her and taking other stats professors for intro level courses I can firmly say shes definetly one of the worse options out of the bunch, take the other profs.
Ruth was a solid professor. She was often late to class which was kind of annoying but clearly cares about students. She posts the lecture slides on canvas but with blanks in them to encourage attendence. There are 2 tests and a final, all multiple choice and you can bring a cheat sheet. The class is graded on a lot of things so it was pretty easy.
Seems like a good person and she is a good professor, but stats just seems to be one of those classes where it doesn't matter who the professor is, it is hard. I luckily had taken a stats class just like this one before, so I had a general knowledge of what to do. If you haven't had a statistics class before, I would stay far away from this one.
Ruth is amazing. She is such a kind professor, and she made my first semester of college way less stressful. There are 3 exams, not including the final, and you can drop one. For the exams and the final, you get two cheat sheets. I know everyone is different, but I would recommend this professor to neurodivergent students who enjoy flexibility!
I loved her she's so sweet and her lectures are interesting and engaging. You do have to go to the lectures for notes because she has fill in the blanks on her slides. There are 2 exams and 1 final but you get a cheat sheet for all of them and there are a lot of hw's to balance it out.
You get a one pager for exams. Exams are multiple choice. She posts her slides online but they have fill in the blanks that she tells you in class. She is very kind and understanding. Her 2 midterm exams were easy but the final was difficult. There are quizzes in recitation but they are straightforward and open note.
I had to scrape for the A because the second midterm was very difficult and I felt like a lot if not most people didn't understand exam 2 content well enough before the exam. I wish she would have less blank slides just bc a lot of the time I was more focused on copying down the notes more than actually understanding the content. Not bad tho.
Ruth is such a sweet woman and grading scale is very forgiving. Be sure to do all extra credit and get 100% on homework to boost your grade. Tests were lowkey kinda hard. Make sure you actually study and do not underestimate the difficulty of this class as it seems easy at first
Took her for Honors Stat and really liked her! Class was small so she was very hands on and accessible by email. Lots of EC and her exams weren't too difficult as long as you pay attention in lecture. Seminars were helpful and an easy boost to my grade. Also lets you use cheat sheets on exams. I'd def recommend her to anyone who needs to take stat!
One of the best professors I've had at Pitt. She gives plenty of examples to make sure you understand the material and the tests reflect that. You get a dual sided cheat sheet for each exam (two for the final) and she is very accessible outside of class. My only recommendation is take a 50 minute class instead of 75, lectures are very dense!
Ruth is genuinely such a nice and funny professor, and she wants her students to do well. At times, lectures could be a little dull and dense (I recommend taking the 50 minute lecture) and exams were somewhat difficult, but you do get a double-sided cheat sheet for each exam and two cheat sheets for the final, which makes exams easy to pass.
