This class is VERY boring but, if you can manage to stay awake enough to get the handouts and do the homework, you'll pass. Easy grader.
She's available. and a good, but new teacher.
The class is useless but fun. Lots of reading handouts, but most aren't necessary and all are easy. She is long-winded and it's hilarious, but she is a nice lady.
The course material is literally middle-school level. It's a joke but it's an easy A. There are tons of handouts but they're all the political treatises, so you can safely trash them if they're not part of homework. Prof talks too much.
Very cool class. Lots of discussion and the teacher loves to hear the students talk. She's known for giving out endless amounts of handouts. One of my heavier-loaded classes in terms of work amount. Stay away if you don't have much time to commit.
She was an awesome teacher, the class was interesting...I did not study at all and I got an A, she is pretty attractive too, Take her class, its an easy transferable A. Just don't interupt her, this girl in my class did that and she went off, but she was
Not a class I reccomend. Ruth is a really unhappy teacher so don't expect simpathy out of her. She LOVES handouts (and expects you to keep all of the 4+ a day she gives you). She loves the sound of her voice... lol Lastly I learned NOTHING (everything
I hated this class... Take it with any other teacher
Ruth Miller is incredibly confident in her teaching. All of the reading that she assigned was very interesting and pretty radical for a community college professor. I would recommend her class to anyone who is seeking an unconventional education.
She's only confident until a student challenges her. Then she gets uncomfortable and evasive thusly: In written work, she makes quarrelsome comments if the student expresses an opinion she doesn't like. In lecture, she either gets off the subject immediately or reiterates the students words to make it sound like he's talking about something else.

Miller is more interested in ideological homogeneity than in education. All of the handouts have the same political spin to them, and she doesn't like it when someone is critical of them. So the best thing to do to pass is just tell her what she wants to hear. It's anti-educational, but it's common for professors to be that way anymore.
She talks the whole time and most of the movies you watch suck. You cant be absent AT ALL even if it is an emergency, I was absent one time and got an F even though i got an A or B on all papers. She makes you get into groups of 4 or 5 and do presentations out of school time and its hard to find extra time when everyones free.
Whatever the word is for the political equivalent of bible-thumping, that's all this professor does. She preaches, not teaches. My grades are just fine because I regurgitate (I wanna pass, ya know), but I'm can't learn anything from a professor who discourages critical thinking. I don't recommend her.
Dont take her if you dont need to!! I took it as a GE requirement and regret it. She makes the class boring and bases subject matter solely on her opinions. More than half the class dropped.! Demands essays to her liking and forces group projects. Ridiculous amounts of reading, horrible professor..stay away!!

I think she's a fairly easy teacher. Not super easy but if you come to all the classes and listen, take notes and read in the textbook you will def. do well on her quizzes and tests. She's very nice if you need help, she's always willing to help and there are always extra credit options!
Extremely disappointed in this class. The title sounded amazing, but the actual material was not what I expected AT ALL. She has way too high of expectations, forces group projects (this is COLLEGE), and doesnt encourage alternative opinions to hers. You have to attend. I got marked down for another class field trip interfering with her class.
I took this just for GE credit. Had no idea what it was all about and still didn't know for a few weeks but once I got into it, I loved it! Very good into to all the major arts of the past few centuries and Miller relates it all to politics, culture and everyday life. Made me want to travel to the places covered.
This class was a blast! not the easiest but a lot of fun and VERY interesting. I also made a lot of good friends in this class. I am studying to major in film and I learned more in this class than I did in my film classes! I would recommend it to all film majors and anyone just interested in American pop culture and why we love it or hate it.
I joined this class last semester at the last minute. Wound up learning a lot about contemporary culture. I would recommend it for anyone interested in modern and contemporary history, art architecture and theory, some music. The discussions were good. She drops 2 lowest grades which kept me in the "A" range.
good teacher
She's awesome. very undersstanding. I was either late or barely there but I definately made up for it. She's totally cool. Loved the class, she knows what she is talking about.
She is a really good teacher, take lots of notes. It is helpful to read the passages she asks you to read or else you can't follow her in class when she is asking for meaning behind a piece of art. Very friendly and the class is fun. :)
This class can be considered the high school equivalent of an elective . . . but it's very educational, I learned a lot. It is an easy A but, like all classes, you have to take good notes and study. Do recommend.
This was the easiest class I have ever taken in college. If you have any intelligence at all and are literate you can get an A with minimal effort. Read the book and listen to lectures and you can get an easy A.
When the semester began I thought she was nice and understanding, but as it continued and the group work was more common and FORCED, my interest dropped. She expects WAY TOO MUCH of students, she doesn't realize we don't have degrees in whatever her area is. I was disappointed and felt really ripped off on my grade. I wouldn't take her again ever.
Very bad teacher. Loves her voice but not your opinion Warning All DVC students do not take do not take do not take she will drive you crazy
She is clear about what she expects. She is more than willing to help you out. Go to class, take notes, study the notes close for the tests, and youll pass easily. She does have you do two group projects per semester which i didnt like, cant see how ppl could complain though, she's very nice, tests ez and her classes cover interesting things.
Whatever you do, don't take this class unless its your favorite subject! She's not a horrible teacher, but there for sure are better ones out there. Tons of group work, and she grades really hard on homework, and the written response parts of the tests. There is some extra credit, but not enough to change your grade that much.
She's a really good teacher. The lectures are interesting although the reading is extremely boring. She is an organized person, gives out syllabus and list of reading requirement at the beginning of the semester. Taking her class is recommended if you can keep up with her and the reading requirement.
I took humanities american pop culture, and it was a highly interesting class. She's very clear with her lectures, and allows the students to speak their mind about the subject. However, she's really anal about attendance, and i only missed class once. Yet, she still brought it up to me. Just take notes, listen to the lectures, and attend class.
She makes humanities interesting and inspiring. She is very organized & follows exactly what her weekly schedule says. Between discussions & powerpoints, you learn and get a lot back out of the learning. Pretty easy class as long as you take good notes and come to class. I barely read the book and aced the quizzes. Strict on attendance though.
In pop culture, we mainly watched a lot of movies. There wasn't a lot of work either. There are a few group projects which are kind of annoying but you get over that. There was also 5 quizzes the whole semester, you get to drop 2. Overall, this class was easy and interesting.
She has not taught my class anything during the semester, and when asked a question has usually either attacked a person's merits or not given an answer. It seems like she does not know some of her own material, and she has been rude to my classmates on multiple occasions which my other classmates and I find disturbing.
Okay, I took only one of her classes during the Italy Study Abroad and.... I LOVED HER. She was so organized, that it really made all the other teachers look like a joke in comparison. She's tough, but really values input from all the other students. I wish she was a little closer to my neck of the woods, so I could take more of her classes!!!!!
Miller was the worst college professor I have had in two years. She not only was rude and condescending, but critical thinking is discouraged. If a student is to disagree with her ideas, they are automatically wrong, and leads to their humiliation. She ruined the class for me, one that I was looking forward to taking. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASSES!
Dont take this class as a "filler/fun" course. The workload for this THREE UNIT ELECTIVE is tremendous!Tons of reading and 2 group assignments that are a huge portion of your grade. Miller is quick to pick apart & shoot down ALL of the work turned into her.She fancies herself an intellectual and jam-packs tons of info into her lectures, if you miss one class you're struggling.. Two? Youre just screwed.
its simple. her "quiz's" are 20 multiple choice, another 20 MC where the ENTIRE class is forced to answer q's about multiple paintings in a simple q at the same pace during the "quiz" PLUS a short answer and a paragraph response. The fun stuff is having multiple group projects and presentations on seperate topics with seperate groups overlapping...
She's alright. Very precise in her way of doing things, which can be kind of annoying. 5 quizzes, one paper, and two group projects. Very little homework. Learned some stuff that I didn't know before. I don't think I would take her again, but it wasn't a terrible experience. I would recommend taking it with a friend if you can.
Although people are not favorable of Prof. Miller, she is just like any 4 year univ. professor. She is strict with her rules and precise with how she wants papers written but is extremely organized and helpful with any questions. You will get a B or above by attending, making an effort and listening to her lectures.
Ms. Miller is a great teacher, there are many class discussions and she really encourages participation. I would reccomend her class for somebody who actually wants to learn because this course is in no sense easy. There is a lot of reading but we also watch a lot of (amazing) movies. Only take this class if you are serious about school. gorgoeous.
Such an amazing teacher, very inspiring. My only wish is that Professor Miller taught more subjects (in addition to Hum 123!). Challenging, but rewarding. Read ALL directions, dont freak out over fast-paced tests. She's always on top of everything.
She's very passionate about what she teaches which makes her class very interesting. However, you should not take this class unless you are serious about it. Her rules are pretty strict and there is a good deal of reading. I'm not very studious myself, but she makes the material interesting and I am able to do well in the class. Overall great class
Miller is just awful, if you didn't know anything prior to taking the class, she might be fine. If you know the answers to things she asks, she doesn't want to call on you. She doesn't think you can compare a cartoon to a live action film/show ON ANY LEVEL. She is quite out of date culturally, which hurts her ability to teach the class.
The lectures are somewhat boring, she does keep a friendly attitude the whole semester, know clue how she does it. but overall a very enthusiastic teacher. also no too bad on the eyes if you know what Im talking about
This class is in no sense easy. Attendance is mandatory, and the grade you'll get is probably as much work as you put in. Ms. Miller is strict on how she wants things done, which can be seen as somewhat uptight. But lectures were very interesting, we watched a couple of films and tv shows. 2 groups projects, quizzes almost every week, and an essay.
I had this class last Spring, and I miss it very much. She takes a considerable amount of time to write ACTUAL feedback on your essays. She is also protective of her students feelings, and seems to care about them on an individual basis. It taught me to see media differently. My old favorite movie is now my least, but I gained a few new ones...
literally horrible. talks down to all her students, and this isnt a pop culture class, it's a film class and that's definitely not what i signed up for. She thinks she knows everything and that all her students are idiot. The course is much harder than it should be, and so are the tests
She is not helpful at all, you need to go to office hours for her to like you b/c she is so "smart". She thinks her students are dumb, except for her favorites-obvious because when they talk in class, her face lights up. She makes her class way harder than it should be-it is a GE! I would never recommend her, worst class I have taken at DVC.
I should've listened to these other comments prior to taking her pop culture class. I regret taking it. She does act like shes too "smart" and if someone corrects her she can get pretty rude. It is more of a film class then pop culture & it is a struggle to even stay awake. LOTS of reading. She is clear on what she wants but still a tough grader.
Ms.Miller is very informative and I found her class to be very interesting! She DOES require lots of reading, but she provides most of the material, and though it can be dated, it is very relative. It can seem like a film class at times, but it is really much more. Her grading is very tough but she's fair. You get what you give. Highly recommended.
Amazing instructor! People have been complaining that she is smart. Well, she is highly intelligent and knows her subject amazingly well. She wants you to think critically. She is very organized and very clear about due dates and expectations. She does want you to meet with her. It's what good instructors do to help you be more successful.
Had her for 123 and 112, loved both classes and loved her. She is very smart, worldly, and well spoken--so much so that she can be a bit intimidating. However, she makes herself approachable and always teaches with clarity. If I were ever to become a teacher, I hope I could be even half as good as Professor Miller.
her exams are easy A.F. "opinionated answers" #1 rule" no going in and out of class" So what did I do? Have RESTROOM Time! SHE LOVES IT! Especially if u go at least once! She WILL ask you about it! IN FRONT OF THE CLASS ( afterclass) or even if she doesn't believe you who cares! It will be the end of the semester! TLDR: EASY CLASS........
Prof. Miller was definitely a good teacher! She always spent extra time to give feedback and help. Her lectures were long, but VERY informative and helpful. She prepares you for the tests, all you have to do is pay attention. Be prepared for lots of reading, but don't worry, it's actually interesting and free! She provided packets of the readings!
I honestly loved her. Her lectures can be really engaging at times and they made me actually get interested in art. She actually gives feedback on the homework that we turned in, and her test are super easy as long as you study really well. She was even nice enough to photo copy the textbook pages so we didn't have to buy them.
Be prepared to read a ton, analyze film techniques and put those into action during tests. She lays it all out for you, so if you want to pass just do what she says. The only things that were difficult were the group projects, expect 12 people per group. Cool thing is she drops one test score and doubles your best score. Attendance is mandatory!
This class is not an easy A, you have to work for it. The exams are based on the films watched in class, readings she hands out (no textbook), and class lectures. She is very smart and her lectures were interesting, but her intelligence may come off as rude. 3 exams, 2 group presentations, 1 paper. I would have taken it with a different teacher.
Nice teacher, but too many readings!. If you are a science major do not take this class.! Only take it if you are serious about Humanities, otherwise it will be tough. Good thing is that you don't have to buy the books. She prints everything out for you.
She is amazing. Im not really an art person, but after taking her class I started to be interested in artsy stuff. Lectures are interesting. There are 3 tests, she will give you a study guide beforehand, just follow it and you'll be fine. Come to class and listen to her lectures!! No need to buy textbooks she provide it for you.
Ms. Miller is an amazing professor. Really knows her material well. She does want you to participate in class discussions with readings and films watched in class. There's only 3 tests and she drops your lowest score and doubles your highest. There is no final but a final presentation done in a group (expect 5-7).
Textbook not needed. Assigns a lot of reading handouts, but read them & you'll easily pass her 3 quizzes. Gives tons of extra credit, attendance is mandatory (daily 1-minute in-class assignments, DO THEM!), class is fun if everyone participates. One 3-4 page paper, two 10-minute group presentations, and best 2 of 3 quizzes are her grading criteria!
Just get ready to read. A LOT.
Dr. Miller is an inspirational professor to say the least. She really knows her topic and got her Ph.D in art history. Before her 112 course I wasn't really interested in anything to do with the arts. Needless to say, I am now. After taking this course I actually became the Humanities tutor, so come on in if you need any help next semester.
Professor Miller is a great teacher overall. Just show up to her class and do all the readings and you'll have an easy A. 2 group projects and 3 exams, she drops your lowest exam and will replace it with your highest score. She always gives a small assignment before class, make sure you do it, it helps your grade a lot!
A really fun class if you need to get a few credits out of the way, readings are mandatory. Three tests that she gives study guides for that are usually common sense if you've paid attention/ are directly off the study guide.
Easy, easy class. Plenty of extra credit opportunities, clear lectures, straightforward tests that are guaranteed As if you reviewed, and super fun! This is a class you want to take if you're gonna be taking classes like calc 3 in the future and you need a GPA cushion.
Love Prof Miller! Take her class if you need a Humanities course! She appreciates when students participate by answering her questions posed to the class. It's artistic content, so just share what you observe. No HW, besides reading packets that she provides! 3 exams, drops lowest grade and doubles highest score. 2 group projects w/ presentations.
Mrs. Miller is hands down one of the best professors I've had at DVC by far. She's very understanding and always willing to help you. Continuously tells you to come into her office hours for help. I suggest going to all the classes, helped me tremendously. 3 exams, drops lowest grade and doubles your highest. Lots of reading but great teacher!
This class was ridiculous, She is the head of her department and acts like this class is the most important on your schedule. Tests were hard, tough grader, she provides easy points every class but man does she make you pay for it with lecture and reading assignments. This is not a show up and get an A class. No book required, she prints everything
Simply an amazing teacher, reminds me of Angelina Jolie who also had a PHD in humanities. She is very professional, loves what she does & is always ready to inspire and nurture the classroom. Please take her class if you need humanities, she almost made me change my major, but I love economics too much :-)
My situation differs from most. The first time I took 123 my freshman year, I failed. My attendance was poor and I did the minimal amount possible. The 2nd time I took it 1 year later, I received an A+. You have to show up and do your best. It's a very interesting class and her class discussions rock. If you study and participate, you will pass.
Took her class in a study abroad program in London, my god she assigned way too much reading and stresses students out. for the end of the semester we had to do a final exam AND final presentation/project. I took two of her humanities classes because I thought it was going to be easy. i was wrong. i honestly didn't learn anything in these classes.
She spends too much time talking and continues to cover material already covered. She manages class time poorly and the students end up paying for it. Many of her assignments and tests are redundant because she adds so many components. She doesn't test for content but rather detail which is a shame because she picks good literature. DO NOT TAKE.
Nice college prof without being too nice or too strict, attendance was super important. Made the boring material fun to read and analyze, tests were pretty hard if you did not do homework or reading (or watched the films). Make sure you do the note cards for each class if she requires it!
I dont really like her, whenever i gave inputs and participated in class, if my analysis of something was not what she was thinking then she would kind of give you this "nice try" face and say "uhh yea.... kinda.." it deterred me from giving my input and raising my hand during class. and she gives WAY TO MUCH READING. get ready to spend hours.
Miller is a pretty good teacher. I like learning the things she teaches. She is a bit too strict on attendance, bathroom breaks, leaving class early or late, and texting during class which is annoying. No homework which is awesome, unless you actually do the readings.
She is very knowledgeable on art, and film. However, she doesn't always necessarily accommodate tough situations outside of school, but if you let her know that your going through something, and as long as when you are there you participate, do the homework, and study for exams, you can succeed. She has a mid-west twang funny when she says blog.
Miller chooses a lot of cool literature, but its dense and needs clarification in class. My issue was that we covered the same part of material several times and never fully completed an analysis on a piece we were discussing. She jumps back and forth between topics in class and makes it unorganized. I had trouble getting useful feedback from her
Amazing teacher. Super helpful and a great conversator.
She is a nice woman but takes about an hour to go over things that could be explained in 20 min. Because of this the film viewings are often stretched out over 3 classes. You learn nothing in class - either go over study questions from the book or watch a film. She is way way too strict about her attendance policy and those pointless thinkpieces.
Pretty fun. I didn't do well on a few things in the beginning, but I did all the extra credit and was still able to get an A. She's really willing to work with you if you need extra help. She's a bit of a hard grader for essays, but even if you don't do well on a couple things, there are many opportunities to make it up. Take advantage of that!
Filmfiction&criticism: One of her easier classes. Show up to class, read, listen to her lectures and you'll get the A. Projects and writing assignmentseasy points. Exams include themes that she talks about, reading checks & short answer. Know some film terms for the exams + for the 1st exam- read the textbook. Replaces lowest exam w/ highest.
She is very helpful when you come to office hours and really makes you understand a lot more clearly. She has assigned study questions not necessarily homework but if you are trying to pass then you have to so you can be prepared for quiz and test. Offers extra credit a lot actually like student workshops and then optional writing assignments.
EXTREME READING OVERLOAD! think pieces are useless but they're required. exams are 40-50 multiple choice q's, 3-6 short answer q's, AND a "mini" essay which all needs to be completed in the 80 min class period. She doesn't use canvas just a blog so u never know your grade until u email her. uses old films+books so its VERY boring but passable class
I learned so much from taking her classes! She truly loved what she teaches, and is very intelligent. She made even the most boring subject (to me) interesting. A LOT of reading, and critical thinking, but I truly felt like I got an education. She also takes the time to meet with you outside of class if you need help! Highly reccommend
Small assignment on what you learned in class turned in at the beginning of class so try not to miss a day. She has reading based quiz's but just do good on the test and on the final and you can still get a A. I never read the material and just took really good notes. Do the extra credit if possible and the final is just a simple presentation
Try to keep up with the current readings for discussions, so that way when you raise your hand, you dont feel dumb. Shes a really cool lady and has a poetic way of speech that draws you in. Taking her again next semester. BTW... I was expecting a low B and I got an A! I think she curves a lot
P. Miller is a very kind woman but she spends way too long explaining things and trying to get the class started. She is so strict about attendance and isn't very lenient if life happens to you during the semester. She should spend her time better by teaching us the material instead of wasting our time blabbering about things that are irrelevant.
I was expecting this class to be fun and an easy A... but no theres a ton of reading and exams are super hard. She gives good feedback and what and why you missed but still too much work.
I really like Miller overall. Theres a decent amount of work but it is all fairly easy and not that time consuming. One bad thing is shes not good with time management so we get behind a lot. Theres only 3 tests and she drops your lowest score & doubles your highest. As long as you listen in class and skim the readings you should get an A.
Miller is very knowledgeable about humanities. She wants her students to be inspired by it the way she does. Do NOT skip class, lectures are very heavy. Do not assume this class is easy because it is art, she really wants you to deeply understand humanities. Please take advantage of her office hours, she is so helpful and wants her students to pass
Prof. Miller is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches, but don't expect an easy A. She is very anal when it comes to class attendance and the grading of assignments and tests, so be prepared to put in the work for everything. Going to class and taking notes is imperative if you want an A, as this is what she bases her tests on.
A very nice woman, but that doesn't mean she is a very good teacher. Miller takes 30 minutes to explain something that could take 5 minutes. She has daily assignments known as "think pieces" which are very pointless. She also gives out too many reading assignments that reach up to 10-15 pages long. Grade is mostly based off tests and think pieces.
Prof. Miller is very generous and helpful towards her students. Attendance is crucial for a good grade in her class and she makes you turn in "think pieces" every class for points. Offers extra credit and her office hours are extremely beneficial. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about what she teaches which made her lectures engaging.
attendance is mandatory, if you leave class early she marks you absent, even if its in the last 10 min of class. strict about phones in class, docs you points if in sight. lectures are painfully boring. only plus side is the tests are easy if you take notes in class and pay attention. show up to class, pay attention, take detailed notes and ur fine
This class is easy, just show up, do some form of the reading, and raise your hand. The professor often will spend 10-20 minutes attempting to lead the class to the desired conclusion. This is the most a class has ever felt like high school since high school. Discussions are a bore if other people don't participate.
Miller made this class so interesting by having inspirational and intellectual lectures that were very engaging. Gives clear feedback on assignments and interacts with the students so the class doesnt seem dry. Tests can be challenging if you dont show up for lectures since its mainly based on what is talked about in class.
Harsh grader, the lectures are awkward if nobody is engaging because the material is boring. She assigns hw but never collects it, just take detailed notes in class and you'll be good on the tests. The only grades are 3 tests, a few essays, and a final group presentation. She's strict with phones and marks you absent if you come late or leave early
If lecture doesnt work for you, dont take this class. Though if it is, take this class. The tests are ridiculously easy if you show up to class and actively participate. She is flexible for meeting up with her outside of class if you need any help with studying or projects. I enjoyed this class and it gave me a new perspective on art.
Professor Miller is very passionate about what she does and it is really respectable. Absences do heavily count towards your grades due to taking role and turning in a think piece each class worth 6 points. As long as you complete all of your work thoroughly the class should be steady sailing. Ask questions!
I honestly have mixed feelings about prof miller. Shes kinda quirky ngl but I do feel like i learned a decent amount from her class. She requires quite a bit of reading but also goes over everything in class which is helpful. Grading criteria is super clear from the beginning and she also drops your lowest test grade and replaces it with highest.
Easy points for a daily summary of what you learned in class (gives a LOT of cushion for grade), 3 tests including final, final is NOT cumulative, very little homework, one group presentation at the end. Go to class, listen and take good notes - you WILL get a good grade. Easy A if you put in the effort.
Do not take her 8am class if you can't be there 5 minutes early. She has "think pieces" due every beginning of class worth points just as an incentive to be on time. Must pay attention during lecture to make your own notes, must buy book to be able to participate in class. Unorganized at times so grading is confusing. Favoritism with teachers pets.
Professor Miller was a great teacher. She really cares about you getting a good grade. She is very redundant in telling you what assignments are due, but its not the biggest deal. She does have her entire class discussion based on the reading, so make sure to actually read the text. If you do all your homework, she will give you a fair grade.
Can be an easy A class, as long as you show up to class, complete two writing assignments, three exams, and one group project. Daily reading assignments are discussed in the next class. She's very helpful when you visit during her office hours. Keep in mind, she is strict on attendance and she may cut points off grade for coming to class late!
Read novellas or short stories and watched the film adaptations. Some similar & diff to the source material. Wide variety of eras and genres in film and fiction so it was pretty cool. Lots of lectures that made the movies take awhile to finish but no complaints otherwise. But do the reading otherwise I dont think you could fake it in her class.
Good teacher, really interesting class, great discussions.
I really didn't enjoy this class much. Interesting because you mostly get to watch movies, but her online lectures were a drag. We went online half way thru semester due to COVID. "Think pieces" every week which seem pointless, boring lectures, GROUP project at the end of the semester (even tho we are online ?? like why bro) and yeah. It was mid.
Lots of work and boring lectures. Pretty easy to pass, just need to pay attention and do the readings. Group Project at the end of the semester, one 3-4 page paper, and 3 exams. But she drops the lowest score if you take all three and replaces it with your highest. Overall, she expects you to participate and work hard.
I found the material to be intriguing. However, Professor Miller is very specific in her grading. Make sure to be present in-class discussion, take notes beforehand and during. She does offer many extra credit opportunities. Try your best to participate in the discussions. Provide your input. She does drop the lowest test score at the end.
Though this class is online, you have to be present. This class was synchronous and you need to have your camera on a majority of the class time. Though if you are present during the lectures and take notes it will be an easy A. This class is lecture heavy, but if you are interested in the arts, this class should be delightful.
Prof. Miller will make sure that you actually learn the material and is very interactive with her students. Make sure to participate in class (counts toward grade), read all of the readings she assigns, take notes in class (many of the discussions will help you with the exams), and pay close attention to her instructions for the final group project
I LOVE Professor Miller. She is an absolute sweetheart and a wonderful, caring person. I learned so much from her and because of her, I have a passion for film now. My writing skills are better now because of her. I liked her interactive class, and the books/movies are awesome! She has a great taste in art. Everyone should take her class!
I took 3 classes with Ruth over 2 semesters and got all As. The reason was that Ruth not only goes in depth with her classes but the course structure is simple and stress free. Basically she will tell you what to expect and how to pass and its up to you to make it happen. Not saying its an easy A but it was definitely not a stressful A.
Good Professor easy to talk to. You do read a lot but she provides links for most books and films. Work is easy not a lot of things to do short daily responses as think pieces. Definitely a good choice.
(took asynch) she is very kind and accessible outside class. quizzes and tests were hard for me because you had to memorize small details from long lectures, movies, and writing. i enjoyed the projects though because of the freedom she gives you. you will need to study a lot on the tests, try to make friends and they can help you
The professor was dull, and the classes were lengthy and challenging to sit through. Her comments are never clear or consistent in any way. There are no easy instructions that can be followed. You should only do it if you want a challenging class because it requires a lot of work on your part.
Very clear and structured class and I found the material really interesting. Not a lot of work and you can easily get A's on tests as long as you study. Prof Miller is very sweet and caring highly recommend this class!
Her lectures were definitely long winded, but the material we read and watched I think makes up for it. I have always disliked reading for school but I genuinely enjoyed the pieces she had us read. Not reading does put you behind for discussion though. She is articulate, and well spoken in her material.
I really enjoyed Professor Miller's Humanities courses. I've taken two and thought they were both very interesting and informative. I would highly recommend her courses if you are interested in the Humanities.
If you are 1 minute late to class you do not get points on her daily credit assignments (which stack up). She expects everyone to read literally 10+ 15-page readings for a non-english class, but it's really easy to just not read them and BS it. The actual lessons are very educational and interesting, but she really needs to restructure her course.
Very strict tech rules and way too much reading in this class
She's not the worst prof in the world, but her classes will make you feel like you're back in high school. She teaches alright, but can be a bit strict with random things. Her class is pretty easy, though her generally infamous daily "think pieces" can be an issue to some, mostly since you can't be even a minute late to class or you lose 6 points.
Horrible experience with her. You will lose points if you are a minute late or leave the class for any reason, even for 2 minutes. Tests are based on class discussions so you have to take really good notes. Only a few actual assignments aside from think pieces though.
She spends 70% of time going over stuff already covered, wasting most of class. Her daily writings are also contribute nothing to your knowledge. You put 30 seconds writing what you learned so far, with no feedback, and she completely ignores it if you come a hair too late. She's head of the humanities department, so good luck complaining
This professor was awesome. Most of the time I never did any of the reading and just used common sense, but sometimes you do have to read. Exams are really easy and there isn't much writing or this class other than submitting a couple sentences at the beginning of every class. It is honestly a really easy class though and the movies are very cool.
If you value your well-being, avoid her classes. The material is easy, but requires STRICT attendance for some flashcard that's worth 2% of your grade daily. She'll also use any reason to mark it off: Being late AT ALL, going out of class in any way, any absence or even just not looking up enough. Sacrificed my mental multiple times for those alone
Good teacher although the emphasis on attendance makes the class hard to work around.
Miller is a bipolar professor. Her lectures were nice and easy to keep up with, but the things she says to you sometimes come off rude and condescending. She grades harshly, and her analyses of your work at times are straight up wrong. Also insists on college level writing, despite a lot of her students being first years or international students.
Just do not take her please she is just not a good professor
Her content is very easy, just readings but the lectures are long and lacks info. shes really strict and passive aggressive towards her students. she has a strict phone policy so be careful or she'll deduct from your think piece points. it doesnt seem like she cares about her students either. she lacks empathy and makes her students feel bad
Professor Miller can be strict, but her classes are engaging and insightful. Attendance is a must, but the workload is manageable. I found Unstuckstudy helpful for preparing, along with the course materials.
I LOVED THIS CLASS. The subject matter was so fun! 80% of the five tests are lecture focused so take notes! Discussion post each week and one final slide show project at the end. Highly recommend her online class. I learned so much and I'm inspired. Super easy to fit into your schedule.
She is a good professor who truly wants her students to succeed. There is one big paper and a final project. There is also a quiz every two weeks which are pretty in depth about the material being learned. However, be prepared to watch long films and read lots of readings!
This class was super fun. The movies we watched were interesting and analyzing them was fun. She gives great feedback on every assignment. There's a lot of reading but its not difficult like an hour reading weekly. The class is also well organized and you learn a lot would recommend this class
I was not a big fan of Professor Miller While she seems like a sweet, caring, and knowledgeable person her class structure is just plain annoying. The think piece assignment is so tedious and it's where you have to turn in a notecard every day stating one thing you learned for 6 points which she will take points off of if you don't go into detail.
Professor Miller was overall a great professor. She had these note cards called think pieces, they really did benefit your grade as long as you were consistent. She was also very nice and gave really good feedback. She was a very lenient grader, but the exams were quite difficult if you did not study or participate in class discussions.
I took my first ever college class with Professor Miller, and it was a breeze. Material is very easy to catch on to, as long as you attend her lectures. All her tests are lecture based, so you better show up. She provides packets, so you don't need to buy anything yourself. Or they're available online. Just show up, participate, and it'll be easy.
Wants students to learn but is very passive aggressive with her tone, participation matters a lot and can be detrimental if you dont show up, made it hard to go to class towards because of how negative the environment was !
She's nice, honestly the class is straightforward you just really have to keep up and pay close attention. there are quite a few readings but you go over what happens in class also 3 main exams and 1 major assignment. she wasn't that bad it wasn't a difficult class but also not a super easy one.
My first ever college class was taken with Professor Miller. Getting a good grade in this class was a breeze. The #1 thing you have to do is to listen to lectures, and take notes. If you miss a lecture ask somebody else for the notes. The tests were light, but heavy with lecture questions. Even if you forgot one thing, you could guess the answer
Very fair grader, she gives lots of extra credit opps and has some pretty fun project/assingments for this course! Only problem is when I got admitted into a hospital she was kind of cold about letting me turn in in-person assingments when i get discharged and I had to beg to take the final exam only one day late. So DSS students just beware
