She's a pretty good teacher. You have to show up to class though or she lowers you're grade
Very clear, gives you what you need to know. Straight to the point. Easy quizzes and labs. If you show up on time, you have nothing to worry about. She's nice and isn't moody.
She's very helpful. Goes through all problems step by step. She's not bad at all, you just have to study, which is not hard to do once she goes over the lesson. She's also a sweet person. I would take her again anytime.

Very Very Bad Breath!!!!! Nice lady!
Very nice and helpful teacher. She grades very fair/easily on lab reports. Tests are not bad if you study.I def. recommend her.
I was surprised after having a relatively uneventful time in CHEZ101 to find out that Ruth Topich is a very nice lady. I was happy to take her night lab, and you should try your hardest to have her be your teacher!
Mrs. Topich is a very good and straight-forward teacher. If you are able to do her recommended problems you'll be A-OK for her tests. Does a good job of preparing you for the ACS final. Reccomended.
Labs were easy but lab tests were ridiculously hard.
A lot of people think shes not so nice, but in my class she was very helpful and willing to answer questions. Nice lady.
Shes pretty friendly, willing to help, etc. I think her tests for lab are the same no matter what section youre in so test difficulty is the same no matter what teacher you take, but shes clear and prepares you well. Her husband, Dr Topich is good too.
Somehow finds a way to explain easy concepts so they are confusing as hell.
I have here this semester, she is very sweet, but yes some things that she explains are more confusing then what the book states. Im hoping she does a slight curve at then end of the semester.
I thought she was a great lab instructor :)
had heard good&bad comments b4 taking her, but glad i did.shes extremely clear and helped me understand the subject.you have to study &attend class b/c class material is on test.don't let book gather dust on shelf, study and u can do great.
Very nasty lady. Treats her class like a bunch of 5 year olds. Her tests are too hard.
She's a cute lady, just the tests can be hard, study the notes and ur book, make sure you know what youre doing and try to not miss too many resitations they can help you if you try.
I liked her alot. She has a set of rules she expects you to follow, but she is fair. Keep to the book, study, do the work, basically just be a student, and you'll sail through.
Easy class, but she can be a first class ****, although you'll spend most of time with a TA so it doesn't matter.
very clear in her lecture, and if you study along w/what she teaches and do the hw problems, an A is definitely attainable. just be sure to pay attention in lecture because she explains everything so you can understand the reason things occur, i though it was great.
this woman does not belong in a college classroom she talks to you like youre in kindergarten. meticulous about lab reports and doesnt know jack about chemistry. tedious pre-lab lectures make me want to kill myself. i mean how hard is it to calibrate a spectrophotometer?! dont like her at all.
Amen to everyone that said this lady has serious issues. She was a real witch, and she treats everyone like kids.
excellent teacher. explains absolutely everything so it makes sense. i wish she could teach my 102 class instead of watton. topich stays right on track with what she is teaching, and is not confusing. if you don't pay attention, you'll do bad, but if you listen to her, you'll be fine.
Luckily I knew most of this stuff before I had this class, or I may not have done as well as I did. I didn't learn a whole lot from Mrs. Topich. She was okay, but not amazing by any stretch of the imaginiation.
they way she talks gets on my nerves! if you happen to have a question for her specially at first few weeks revise it in mind as many times as possible, or else you'll get (SOHRY, I DONT UNDERSTAND YEWW!) each word stressed like hell. nasty :s after each lecture i almost want to kill myself- blah
Easy enough class very elementary in instruction and redundant. Whizzed through the calculations for class so keep to the book. Totally dismissive out of class and rude. Office looks like dwelling of the Nutty Professor!! A total mess and she actually runs from you outside of class.
Mrs. Topich is a wonderful teacher to have. I had her both for 101 and 102, and she is so helpful, and will take her time to explain things to you. You have to do the work though, and do the practice problems she suggests. Overall though, she is pretty cool.
She is a very nice teacher, and very willing to explain things that you don't understand. I had her for both 101 and 102, and I think she's great. You have to go to lecture, take notes, study, and do the problems, but we are in college and this is expected. Overall, she is a great teacher!!
she ****ing sucks.
she's very nice amd makes you like chemistry
She is very helpful and is very stern with students who fall out of line. her exams are between easy and hard. she loves to teach is always has review before her quizzes.
she's completely reasonable and really nice if you seem interested and are nice to her. chem lab is chem lab, so it's going to be what you make of it.
A petty, spiteful little lady. If you get on her bad side, which is easy to do it makes for a very long semester.
best teacher they have right now to prepare you for upper level classes, key = pay attention in lecture
I had never had a day of Chemistry in my life, but I never really felt lost in Topich's class, she's a great teacher, and since then she's actually helped me for 101 and 102 although i didn't have her class! she's an awesome teacher tho!
She talks with a locked Jaw that drove me Crazy. Also she gets frustrated at students that are not keeping up with her. Dr. Topich is a better professor to get.

the only hard thing about the lab was waking up at 8. She tells you how to get a A. Not friendly but who cares.
Lets see, she talks too fast, she only go over things once, and something about her that makes you want to punch yourself. She makes the topic harder than it sounds, and that's the reason why I hate her so much, because after you do it by yourself, it's easy.

I hope you know things about chemistry before she tries to explain it to you and confuse the hell out of you
she's a awful!!! she doesn't care if the students understand something or not and she only goes over things once. if you ask her a question, she'll give you an attitude. she doesn't know how to teach. she teaches everything the hard way. she gives you definitions and not explanations of theories in class. take polo or dr. hunnicut if u can!!!
sucks
arrrrgh this class aggrivated me!!! she really expects a lot in terms of studying. i studied for everything and still got a C in just about everything. beware!
took topich for LAB not LECTURE. lab was definitely a breeze BUT the second exam is nowhere near as easy as the first. i ended up taking the third exam in 101 just because i had underestimated her 2nd. got As n 101 and 102 without alot of effort
I love her! She is really good and pushes you to do work out of class. The only thing: she does sorta treat you like you're in middle school or something, but it's good, LoL.
I hate chemistry but i really loved her. She was very willing to help me after class and even when i was taking 102. She made chemistry easy and made it really comfortable to ask her questions. She didn't make you feel like an idiot.
I practically failed chem in HS and I'm breezing through it now with pretty much all A's and a minimal amount of studying because Mrs. Topich is such a good teacher. She know's what she's talking about. Yes, she does treat the class like hs kids bc that's what they acted like, unfortunately. I plan on taking every chem class she teaches.
I didn't enjoy her class. First of all she has a horrible lisp. You're lucky if you don't develpe one after having to listen to her's all semester long. She treats the class as if they are still in highschool, getting really angry is someone talks, no laughing aloud! She gets angry if you ask questions. She just sucks. Take someone else if you c
She was very helpful, and the class was very easy. Sometimes she breaks it down so small that it almost feels like you are in high school, but because of that she made the class very easy. A really nice lady, and always willing to assist you with your questions!
i hated her. her breath stinks so bad that you cant even get close enough to her to ask her a question. she gets attitudes all the times and she doesnt know how to teach. she will teach something one way then on the test it will be totally different. try her husband or somebody else!
She is the best chemistry teacher in VCU. I took one class with her and now I am taking my second class with her. She explains every thing and gives us some tricks to solve the problems easier than waht the book says. Her quizes and tests are very clear and direct. If you studied the notes you should be fine for the tests
I love Mrs. Topich!! She is a fantastic teacher. This is my second class with her and she has made chemistry extremely enjoyable. She will go out of her way to help you.
I found here completely not helpful when a situation arose that I needed a little extra help. She also has that kind of voice that just makes you want to fall asleep. I'm learning in her class, but it takes a lot of effort
she is not a bad teacher. i dnt think she provides enough examples to teach the materials but if u do the recommended problems she gives, it helps. I think she can get helpful if you see her at her office hours and i think she teaches pretty well but sometimes she goes over the materials real fast and doesnt provide enough examples. she's alright
I swear up and down, she is the best chemistry teacher at VCU. She holds extra help sessions out of her own free time and is so passionate about chemistry. If you need someone that will ease you through it, she is the person to take. AWESOME TEACHER.
When Mrs. Topich rolled out the old-fashioned overhead projector, I must admit I laughed a little. But I think her class is great; I haven't missed one yet. She is compassionate and straight foward. I like her class a lot.
pay attention and ask all your questions in class. don't wait till the last minute to do your labs, because you won't understand them, and she won't help you with questions outside of class. she has a really annoying lisp, but she's a lovely lady, passionate about the subject. if you aren't taking chem with this class, chances of failing are high.
Really good teacher if you want to learn. Sometimes a bit confusing, but she was always willing to help you. Her tests are a bit tough, but if you study the material she tells you, you will do fine.
She is a good teacher although she repeats things over and over like were are 2. She explains things in a way that is easy to understand. Don't send her e-mails she won't reply.
She is very clear in what she says but she makes sure you put some effort into the class as well. Make sure you do the labs well ahead of time b/c if you wait till the last minute, you'll be screwed. Also for her exams make sure to know each and every calculation and study the labs carefully !
She is extremely helpful and her lectures are very clear. Chem overall is hard if you do not study for it. I used lon capa, read the textbook and do all the non-mandatory assignment/problems. GReAT teacher.
Not the best teacher...
When in her class i understand what it is she teaches but then she turns around and asks completely different questions on tests. Even the SI sessions are pointless because of how bad it is.
Easy teacher, loncapa on the labs can be a little pain in the butt.
Great professor. She breaks things down so they are easier to understand than how the book explains it. Uses CPS a lot. Go to class and take good notes and you will be ok. She is always willing to help you at office hours. I wish she taught 102 next semester. Great professor.
She can get annoying sometimes, i hate her lectures on the overhead they piss me off. she has a weird accent which keeps me from listening to the lecture. and her tests are easy( i am banking off of ap chem though) so if u didn take ap chem i suggest u get a tutor. enjoy the class cuz i didn.
Good professor overall. You have to take a lot of notes, she also uses CPS so I do recommend that you attend class. LON-CAPA helped a lot but it was time consuming. Quizzes weren't too bad, tests can be somewhat tricky just study the notes THOUROUGHLY. Nice lady, has mood swings, but an A is managable in her class so I'm taking her for 101.
She is a great teacher, but she can be annoying at times. Don't piss her off, because she will nag the whole class. She explains things very well, and even set up a study group for students during her office hours.
she nice, very approachable but her voice is very soothing and it may put you to sleep!!
Bad teacher. She speaks to her students in a condescending tone as if we are 6 years old and she is explaining why we must use our "inside voices." Don't talk in class, one of my friends got kicked out on the first day of lab for asking her friend a question. If anyone acts disruptive, she will give the whole class a lecture on appropriatebehavior
she is VCU CHEMISTRY!awesome!!! she has a big heart and what's u to succeed...just show her that you have the drive!!
i had her for 100, 101, and 102 she's excellent!! she has years of experience and knows what she's talking about just go to class and STUDY!!
Topich is a good professor because she makes things clear. Don't talk during her class (or let her hear you) because she does get really mad over "bad behavior". You don't want to get on her bad side because I have seen her be pretty cruel. But if you respect her and go for help shes there. Her tests are pretty easy and shes very organized.
I really loved chemistry when I took the class with POLO. Topich never really explained things too well and tended to get frustrated when people asked her to slow down. When asked to eplain a question, she did not answer and told me to reread the question without her explaining it. How is that teaching me anything?
TAKE MY WORD DO NOT TAKE HER! She is horrible, I understood chemistry before I had her, now not so much. What she teaches in the class is not what is on the tests or quizzes, she likes to throw an additional step in there that she NEVER covered. This is coming from someone that goes to all the classes and reads the book. TAKE POLO at all cost!
This lady sucks so bad man.. doesnt teach whats on the test or quizes, really no point in going to class... also whispers in lecture so hard to hear..... oh and she isnt very approachable by any means.... POLO is better
Easy class. Just show up and you'll pass. However, never, EVER speak during class or she will seriously screw you up. This lady goes crazy when people are talking. It's actually scary...
she can be so annoying especially when she starts to whisper in a lecture class. dont make her mad she'll call you out in class, i got a c.
nice teacher! knows how to teach. very experinced. who ever rated her bad, prob did bad.. prob didn't study! wake up this is college, of course its gona be tough. but yea, sehes very good, exam pretty tough, but atleast you learn something. i learned a lot!
Always take Mr over Mrs when it comes to Topichs. Exams are hard, but they exist. get an old copy beforehand. get 100% of the clicker and a really high lab grade, and maybe you'll do okay. exams kill.
if you have a solid background in chem this class is extreamly fair. she test and quiz reviews are a joke you go into the exams totally clueless on whats going to be on them
She is cool, but she knows her stuff there are no ways of getting around doing your work or studying, you must go to class cause mostly she has CPS questions and do the lon cappa!! she is good but you hafta work, but at least you will be able to move on to the next level.
get the old tests and go to class for CPS and you get the A!
OMG... OMG. the exams are OMGG EXTRA HARD. maybe because iam from a different country. but whatever it is .. she doesnt know how to teach. shes just too much... all the emails she sends the study guides ARE NOT HELPFUL.( they are not on the tests) i dont even know what to study.. everything is just harddd.. iam basically failing chemistry PERIOD.
Without doubt, the worst teacher for chem 101 at VCU, doesnot know how to teach, cant teach properly, tough test with no connection to what she taught in class.
I took her class for Chem 101 this semester and I thought it was great. She is extremely organized and CLEAR. Tests were pretty easy and contained what was taught during lecture. The final was a bit more tricky, but I still got an A on it. I highly recommend her class!
Such an easy class. I got an A but there is no reason anyone should get lower than a B.
Those who didnt do well in this class must be dumb. It is really easy. She moves EXTREMELY slow so you can clearly understand. Her tests are easy but the final is alittle more difficult-just study!! You must attend class and take notes and do not forget your clicker for the engagement points. If you do this and study you will get an A!! EASY!!!
As long as you follow along you will do fine. Clicker questions actually count which sucks but other than that, easy class. Do all of the practice problems along with the ACS Problems and there will be no surprises. The final was difficult, but she doesnt expect you to know everything. Study & do the work and you will get an A!
she is a great teacher. she explains everything. do loncapa and the suggested problems and you'll be just fine.
GREAT CLASS
the WORST teacher ever! I got an A in chemistry in high school and still thought this class was impossible. Not only did I withdraw, but she made me completely rethink my major. she whispers all the time in lecture and her clicker questions are graded on accuracy!!! ugh! and don't even get me started on her teeth! do yourself a favor and take POLO!
I LOVE her! i hate chemistry, but honestly I've never had a teacher explain something so clearly and is willing to help. People are going to go on about her clicker questions, but that's just laziness on their part.
Attention!! DO NOT TAKE HER, this terrible teacher is a failure at explaining and knowing the material!! She is one of those teachers who knows what she is supposed to say, but that knowledge is skin deep. TRUE STORY: I asked TREE "WHY" questions in class because I was actually interested. She didn't know two of them, and they were reasonable Q's.
If you have a choice between Polo and Topich, take Topich. I took chem 101 twice with both of them and felt that topich was much more interesting and easier. do the lon-capa in advance. i HIGHLY recommend working with the ACS book throughout the course. You don't need to go to class. old exams/quizzes change sem. to sem. but are similar/helpful.
I love her class. I took class with Polo and didn't learn much of anything. She writes out her notes as she explains them on her tablet PC so you don't have to rush to write everything. Not an 'easy' class, but she gives you everything you need to get a good grade. Willing to help. Take her over Polo.
DO NOT TAKE TOPICH! She is the rudest most unapproachable teacher I have ever met! She does not explain things at all and whispers all of the time. I took intro chem with Polo and I wish I would have taken her with 101. Topich is the worst option for chemistry. She will do nothing to help you so stay far far away!
This teacher is probably the least qualified person I've ever seen in front of a classroom. She has no clue about anything except the notes which she repeats. She can't answer any questions beyond the notes and is an idiot.
had her for chem 100 and 101, most people don't like her because she "whispers" but i found it easy to hear her. she teaches the class in a way where you dont really need the book. i really enjoyed having her as a prof. and encourage people to take her because she actually teaches (unlike polo) and you wont be screwed when you take chem 102+
Great teacher. VERY Helpful. She formed a study group for those of us who needed extra EXTRA help. You just gotta study alot b/c the subject is hard, not her. Test are striaght forward like her notes. GREAT NOTES!! Def need book to do practice problems cause that will def help you. You just gotta be a good college student and work for a good grade.
She is amazing! She gives you enough examples to fully understand the material. She Also is funny, but I don't think she knows it.
Expects you to do the HW and come to class. If you do she gives you everything you need to pass the exams and the ACS. If you don't understand something she's quick to respond and gives tons on examples and problems in class to help clarify. She even holds study sessions during her office hours if you need it. Wish she taught chem 102.
Pretty boring. Was often difficult to hear and understand, since she whispers a lot. But I thought she was fair and relatively easy. I would recommend Polo or Henshaw over her, though.
To get an A: read the material, go to class, do the problems in book/online, ask Q's and study... kinda sounds like a college course, doesn't it? Very willing to help during/after class so if you don't understand stuff, talk to her. If you're lost b/c you're not doing everything listed above, address that first.
easy A if you just do everything she ask of you
If you fail this class or even at all think she's not a good teacher, then i am sorry to say, "drop out of school." Everything is self-explanatory. She does a pretty good job at explaining everything. Never read the text book, or did any sort of homework from it. Easy class. Just go to the lectures and you will be fine.
Just do what she says. Go to class, pay attention, do the homework and you'll do well.
By far the best teacher for this class. She speaks really slow and class is boring but I can guarantee that if you just listen and study for quizzes you will do really well on exams and the ACS.
I hate chemistry, but she made it bearable. She's a good teacher-- she explains things at a good pace. She wants the class to do well, but she's a tough lady and doesn't take BS from anyone. Go to class every time, the clicker questions are used for attendance. Worth taking.
Ehh, She is a pretty good professor. YOU MUST GO TO HER CLASSES ! She does clicker questions to make sure you're in class AND on time. Chemistry is chemistry... she makes it tolerable, I guess. Her exams are a bit tricky though. And she grades VERY fairly. No curves, ever. You get what you earn. Go to class, read and STUDY.
Very disappointed in the outcome of her class. The lecture is actually bearable, but when it comes to her tests, I went in feeling confident based off her notes and was left with bad grades. Depends alot on your effort in the class, but she's not very helpful or approachable. She needs to give teaching a rest! Take her class as a last resort!
By far the easiest chem teacher at VCU HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Everything you need to know is taught in lecture. Quizzes are easy but count for like nothing so study for exams and do masteringchemistry well because it's good practice and you'll be fine. There were attendance clicker questions so you have to go to class on time if you're not acing tests
She isn't easy to understand sometimes. I studied my notes and what we did in class and felt confident on tests, but I wouldn't get the best grades back. I didn't like her teaching style.
Chem is pretty complicated in general so having it in a large class room doesn't really help, she teaches from power points and doesn't really explain problems that much, also MasteringChemistry was very frustrating. I was not very impressed with her, she is very boring also. She does clicker questions every class also.
no PPT,no x credit, exam is hard and no in HW,she never answer quastion in email. class is 50mins but she start 5mins later
If you go to class, do the homework, and make the effort to understand the material then you will succeed in this class. If you are lazy, always making excuses, or looking for handouts then you will probably fail. She explains the material you need to know. Her exams are straight forward, but will test your knowledge of the material.
she is nice willing to help if you go to her office hours. Chemistry is not easy but if you put in the work its not so bad. Doing practice problems from the book are a must. If you attend lecture, do practice problems and review the notes then the test are not bad. You do need to study to pass.
I love her. She is great at explaining/teaching chemistry! Her lectures & notes are VERY clear. She does clickers for attendance. All exams are multiple choice & not too difficult. I'd highly recommend her!
I had just an OK semester with this professor. She does a lot of teaching straight from the book. Powerpoints do not explain much. If you miss one class you are lost. Clicker questions every class, so you HAVE to be there although attendance isn't mandatory. I wouldn't recommend unless you like teaching yourself
I took this class after not having chemistry for 13 years. She was very thorough and consistent. All the help from her in the world will not help you if you are not willing to do the work yourself which she says at the beginning of class. I learned everything I need to move on and am taking her class again for 101. people complaining didnt study
RUTH TOPICH IS A GREAT PROFESSOR. SHE HAS 4 EXMAS & THE FINAL.YOUR LOWEST OF THE 4 EXAM GRADES IS DROPPED. IN RECITATION SHE ALTERNATES BETWEEN QUIZES, ACTIVITIES, AND LECTURE. THE ACTIVITIES YOU ARE GIVEN 100% JUST FOR SHOWING UP. SHE ASSIGNS MASTERING CHEMISTRY HOMEWORK ONLINE, WHICH YOU USUALLY HAVE A WEEK OR MORE TO COMPLETE. EASY A IF WILLING.
I loved the way topich teaches this class, she is pretty straight forward and gives clear explanations I would deff take her!
She is useless. She doesn't care about her students and doesn't explain anything. At all.
She is very into what she teaches and she really cares about making sure she is delivering the information as efficiently as possible. I am someone who had a very difficult time in high school chemistry and her class has definitely changed that. I was hesitant about taking her class after hearing negative comment about her but they were wrong :)
She has an annoying voice so you won't want to listen to what she's saying. The material isn't that bad, but she doesn't always clarify things or answer questions well. She hates when the class won't be quiet and she gets furious. I only took her because she was the only professor teaching this course.
I have taken her and Polo & I definitely think she's way better. She is so clear when teaching and her tests are very straightforward. She is great at explaining concepts in chemistry! I did a lot better in her class than in Polo's. TAKE HER if you want to learn and do well.
Professor Topich's class is as straightforward as it gets for Chem 101. She moves slow which is nice for tricky topics. Her quizzes and tests are to the point. If you want a teacher who will go slow and really clarify what she's talking about, take her class!
WORST CHEM TEACHER AT VCU. She doesn't care if you do well or not. She is horrible.
Whoever said Mrs. Topich doesn't care about her students must be new to the college scene, because she is one of the FEW professors that really does. Her class is extremely straight forward, her tests and quizzes reflect her lectures 100%, she gives you practice homeworks online, and stays after class to answer questions. I took her for 100 and 101
She is not easy A, you have to do a lot of work, she is confusing sometimes, she is welling to help you, but really strict with grading! I don't understand anything in the lecture at all ! I didn't really like her class.
she is the nicest teacher that I have this year. Although it takes her 5 minutes to explain PV=nRT. Its so boring, I have trouble staying awake in her class. If u took chem before this should be a breeze. Her test is easy super easy but tricky. I would not recommend her if u don't have a good background in chem because u'll be screwed for final
She is a sweet teacher but boring. She doesn't make lecture interesting. If you really try it is not difficult to get an A. She posts examples online that are similar to the tests and uses examples from class on the test. The only problem is no one pays attention in class. I got an A because I knew the information from AP chem.
Professor Topich is really nice. She does get really mad if you talk in her class and sometimes will stop class just so she can yell at students. But it's understandable so she can teach clearly. Take lots of notes, (and she goes back to the slide even if you don't have everything down) and you'll be golden. Easy class but she's a little boring
I loved this teacher so much I took her for another semester. She is very nice and makes class interesting. She loves answering questions and is very good at explaining the material and gives lots of practice problems that are so helpful in preparing for her exams. Loved her, you won't regret taking her class!
I loved taking Mrs Topich's class! She is very sweet and nice and makes learning the material interesting. She provides a lot of practice material in and out of class that help in preparing for her exams. She is very clear and loves to answer student's questions. take her!!!!!!! you will not regret it
I took 101 with her and now im taking 102 with her. You cant get a good grade without reading through the textbook. When she lectures she only briefly describes concepts and the textbook is a more thorough teacher. Exams can be hard at times. Review the quizzes and it will improve your grade on exams.
Absolutely atrocious teacher. If you like her teaching style you should do fine but she explains things poorly and her notes are impossible to follow. She doesn't put them up online (presumably old age turns everyone into a luddite that refuses to use technology) and you pretty much have to read the book cover to cover to even hope to do well.
The Topich's run the chemistry department...She shuffles around her powerpoints and doesn't give explanations just examples. I learned from the book because class was completely confusing. The tests follow the book well though. I do not recommend Topich I highly recommend Polo over Topich.
Not very good in communicating things or teaching. She tries really hard and wants to help students, but just doesn't seem to be made for teaching. A lot of clicker questions. I pretty much had to teacher myself the class and barely passed...
She's awful and rude. Her explanations are hard to keep up with and all she does are practice problems. She doesn't give enough time for exams and she's very dry and boring. Bring a pillow if you show up to class, you might as well take a nap.
Absolutely one of the best teachers I've ever had. She works hard to make sure her lectures and accompanying powerpoints are clear and comprehensible, and she is one of the only teachers whose homeworks actually HELP you to understand the material. I always came out of the classes with this very acute feeling that I actually learned something.
Clickers are graded. She's rather difficult to understand, even with a microphone. It's a large class, so not much individual attention, but SI helps greatly. Tests are fairly straightforward but many people run out of time for calculations. Don't buy the textbook, it comes digital with the online code (required).
Mrs. Topich is a very nice woman, almost overly so, because she is so nice her lectures feel like hours due to her need to make sure everyone in the class understands everything. Unfortunately this means she goes over the same material a thousand times in a 100 different ways. Take her class if you aren't good at Chemistry she will help you.
I don't like her. She literally talks for the whole class and that's what the test is off. Since she wants us to take notes, she doesn't post any of her notes online.
Tries to trick you on the test and expects you to know all the chemistry 100 material before the first class. She is not very helpful and does not explain the material very well. She expects you to get it right away with the clicker questions during lecture.
Professor Topich is very knowledgeable about her subject, and if you ask her questions she will go out of her way to explain it to you. However, she is easily annoyed when students talk during her class and will them out. Overall, good professor, easy class.
Mrs. Topich is an excellent professor and knows the material she teaches at an exceptional level. The only drawback is that occasionally in lecture she spends so much time explaining the easier material over and over for those that might be confused, that the harder material may not be touched on as much and you're left to figuring it out yourself
Decent professor, but she definitely makes an extremely easy class a lot harder than it has to be by trying to force you to come to class, which consists of boring lectures and all over the place notes, by not putting slides online. Use the textbook and you're fine. I'd personally recommend Polo or Moussa over Topich though.
Please take Moussa or Polo for chem. I don't know why I listened to my friend and took Topich. Her lectures are too long and don't even flow, and her slideshows are very confusing (which she doesn't even put online to help!) You HAVE to go to class. Somedays, she doesn't do clickers, which is annoying because she doesn't say it beforehand.
I dont know why she has low rating. She is such a nice professor. Her quizzes are a little harder than her tests but they are not impossible. I got a C in Polo's class but got a B in Topich's. If you have any question, ASK her. She is very sweet. Do homework and try to go to atleast one SI session. She actually makes chem interesting. Take her.
Professor Topich was definitely not the most exciting teacher to have and classes were usually pretty boring and drawn out. Despite that, she taught the course well. After all, her job is as a professor, not an entertainer. Her quizzes and tests can be tricky but aren't impossible and they really prepare you for the final which is way easier.
I love her straight forward class for people who like to work for their classes not for slickers. test and quizzes are really straightforward few tricks like 1-2 Qs and just it. f every person who claims she is bad.
The class itself is very slow, but she is very clear during lectures. Her quizzes and tests may be hard, but about half of the tests questions are from the directly from the previous quizzes. She goes very fast on clickers, and the clickers may be tricky. MUST do MasteringChemistry.
She is a good teacher, but her class is boring and her lectures are so long. You should attend the class to understand the material. There are a lot of tests and quizzes. Her notes are so useful and many questions in tests are from the notes.
This class is very hard, she hardly talks about each topic. Lectures are long and if you dont go you will be totally lost. if you take this class be prepared to take a lot of notes.
Prepares you well for Chemistry
if you don't already know chemistry you are not going to do well. her lectures are hard to follow and nothing is explained well. even though this is a 101 class it feels like you are already expected to have an amazing grasp of the subject and you will likely end up trying to teach yourself most of the information. 1/10 would not recommend.
Topich is one of my favorites! Her lectures (although long), are very straightforward and go with the quizzes and exams. Calculations are from lecture notes AND MasteringChemistry hw problems. Conceptual facts are literally in the notes in simplistic terms and are often used. Best of all, she is willing to explain after class when you need it.
It's chem. After about the 2nd or 3rd test, start focusing on the ACS. Maybe even earlier than that. Nice professor.
I had Prof. Topich for both Chem 101 & 102, and she is honestly my favorite teacher, one that I am most close to upon my first year here. Take good notes: both what you see and hear. Ask her questions after class too. I did not buy the ACS book at all and only used her notes for the ACS. Got a 95 and 100 for these semesters. Will really miss her!
I know some people who aced the ACS exam with just Topich's notes. Others had to prepare using the ACS workbook. It all depends on what you think works best for YOU and your studying habits. Regardless, lots of Topich's lessons, homework, and tests really helped leading up to this final standardized test. I am very grateful to have her.
I love her! She teaches very simplistically which is why her lectures seem long. If you are not a chemistry person, I highly recommend taking CHEM 100 with her before 101. Her class is not for slackers. Quizzes and tests usually have the same questions. Overall, a great professor who really wants you to succeed so just DO THE WORK!
She is so boring. It was so hard not to fall asleep during her lectures. The only reason I did well on tests was because I had previous exposure to the material, she doesn't teach very well and her monotone voice does not make an hour and 15 minutes of lecture any more bearable. Most definitely take someone else.
Everything you need to know is given during lectures, so attendance is key to passing. Extra credit is sometimes given just for showing up. She's also flexible with due dates providing you notify her ahead of time. Most of your grade relies on the final (from 25%-45%), so prepare well for that.
Nice woman and wants to hear feedback during lecture to make sure students understand. She will answer any questions that you have and attendance is not mandatory but clicker questions are apart of your grade so it would be wise to go. Material is not very hard but heavy on the quizzes and concept practice. Be sure to look online to keep up with HW
Topich's lectures can become boring as she slowly moves through each slide. She assigns homework through MasteringChemistry online and does clicker questions. If you're like me and chemistry is the bane of your existence, I'd recommend someone else. Definitely doable though.
She's not a bad professor, just a boring one the lectures she gives are OK but don't expect an easy A
She is the sweetest teacher ever and she's so quirky, but take her serious! Attend lectures, she'll start a topic with one equation and use that same one for 3 classes straight so you have to know where you left off. Mastering Chemistry homework was lame but prepares you and is easy. Attend recitation for easy grades. Didn't get an A b/c I slacked.
Professor Topich was okay. Her lectures were dry and dense. She didn't post notes online so you had to take notes fast and getting the notes if you missed a class was a pain. But I hear now she has started to post them online so improvements! Her exams were difficult, but I overslept and missed one and still got a B. The ACS Final gets a big curve!
She's a very nice person. She doesn't post the lectures online, so you have to show up. If you're good at chem, you'll do fine. If chem isn't your best subject like me, it can be a little difficult to follow her lectures, but if you put in the extra effort, you can still get an A. The acs really helps and you'll be well prepared- I got a 100 on it.
If you are cursed with Ruth as a teacher, you need to drop the class ASAP. She's slow, boring, rude, and really should not be a professor in my opinion.
if you take her this is what you need to know her test are all multiple choice but her lecture aren't that great you will not get the grade you want if you dont put work out of class also she adds stuff to the exam that you havent went over in class she just tells you the day before in lecture read this which you wont always have time for.
Professor Topich's grading criteria was not clear at all and she sometimes rant's for about 20-30 minutes before class starts. Her teaching style is very slow and boring but she does have the passion to help her students with any questions. I would recommend her for chemistry 100.
Really boring in lecture, she goes very slow and has a monotone voice. but she is really good at explaining stuff IF you ask questions. She really does care about her students but you kinda have to teach yourself or get used to her style of teaching to do well. Only class i had to put in a lot of effort in, but a lot of students struggle.
I wouldn't take this class if chem isn't your strongest subject. She moves pretty fast through her lectures, and they are very boring. She doesn't post filled out lecture power points online, so if you miss something you're screwed. She was a bit hard to understand. Honestly, save yourself the time and pick someone else.
The cutest teacher ever, she hates it when people laugh and disrespect her. It was hard to understand her in the beginning because of her teeth, however she is a great professor and I loved her class!
She's nice, but her lectures are dry and difficult to understand. If you're already good at chemistry, feel comfortable taking her, but I did poorly in her class and switched to another professor.
Ruth Topich is a sweetheart and she thoroughly explains material and walks you through problems step-by-step. She can go a little fast during lectures sometimes, but she pushes you to practice, practice, practice. All the homework is online and she does clickers for class participation.
Make sure you study the material, she's pretty good at suppling the information you need for the test, there's no surprise information unless you don't study, also go to SI sessions they are super helpful! She's also really good when it comes to student accommodations! I would have done better in the class if I had studied at the start of the year
Ruth cannot teach at all. I would highly recommend choosing a different teacher for CHEM 101. Her quizzes and test are 25 questions multiple choice so if you miss more than 3 you can give up on passing with an A or B. She does not explain the topic well and the SI sessions were not helpful either.
I love her! This is my second time taking Chem 101 and I am doing so much better with her as my professor. Quizzes are a little hard but are only 4% of your grade. Exams have a lot of the same questions as quizzes. Go to class and pay attention to her lectures. She teaches in a very straightforward manner. Would definitely recommend.
I took a different professor for chem 101 and loved it, but this semester ended up with Topich, and literally the worst decision ever. Her tests have like 20 questions on them so you can only miss like 3 and get an A. Her lectures are very boring and she assumes as if everyones already understands everything. Save yourself and dont take her
I attend every class and find it very hard to stay awake because the lectures/presentations are very unorganized and difficult to grasp. However, the quizzes and exams are fairly easy as long as you read and learn from the textbook and use outside sourse such as the CLC. Go to class and get your participation points in and use the textbook :)
She was kind of boring and I didn't really understand everything in her lectures especially with having Polo for 101. I always did the suggested problems and went to every SI but still got Bs on the tests because she put random things on the tests. I recommend reading the textbook and paying close attention to lecture or just take Polo.
I've heard from friends that she is fantastic for 101 but for 102 she is lacking. She explains how to do the problems but doesn't put any context of purpose behind what you're doing so it gets confusing. A super sweet lady but definitely not the best professor for 102 but I've hear all the 102 professors lack so I guess there's no right choice.
Mrs. Topich is a sweetheart who knows what she's talking about. There are weekly homework and clicker questions every class, but it's not that rough in all honesty. Clickers are worth only 2% of your grade so attendance isn't exactly necessary. Prepares you well for exams and quizzes, but you need to study a bit more on your own for the ACS.
Professor Topich works very well with you during her office hours and provides resources for you to get extra help. The only thing is for the ACS exam, you may have to study extra hard considering the questions on the ACS exam are more challenging than the questions she provides on her exams.
Her lectures are dull and boring, it was hard not to fall asleep :(. I would take Moussa, I used my friends online notes and homework from Moussa to study before a test and I learned more than I had learned the entire semester with Topich. I feel bad leaving this rating because she really is one of the sweetest ladies, just not a great professor.
topich is a sweet lady but one of the worst teachers. SO boring and impossible to keep up, I'm an A student but I'm not great at chemistry so I really struggled. 3 tests make up 60% of your grade, final is 30%, so only 10% is stuff like tophat questions, hw, etc. The tests arent awful I just really struggled because of her awful teaching.
Shes not the best professor. Can be very simple in her explanations. But her tests are all 25 question multiple choice, atleast for Chem101, so the tests are usually extremely doable and teaching yourself the material for the tests is definitely doable with not too much effort. Definitely better than other Profs with written questions on exams.
Ruth is AMAZING!
She's a good teacher. As long as you attend all her classes and take notes you should be able to get an easy A!
If you put in the effort you will get an A. The tests are multiple choice and 85% of your grade, all the information is covered in the lectures and all the questions are fair.
She's super sweet but her lectures are a bit hard to get used to at first since she kinda puts you to sleep. Tests are worth most of your grade and I suggest show up to class cause her powerpoint notes are different than the ones online. Attendance isn't mandatory but she does take attendance thru tophat.
You HAVE to show up to lectures if you want to pass. Many tests and quizzes make of your grade. Lectures are very boring, though.
Ruth is a great teacher. She is very caring and prepares you well for the ACS. Her exams are very easy if you come to class and take good notes. All her tests and quizzes are multiple choice. She does not try to trick you in any way and is very fair with her grading.
Very Bad Teacher
Professor Topich is so nice and cares about her students. I had her for 100 and 101 and she makes everything so easy to understand. She uses top hat but you can do the attendance from home. She also uses Mastering Chemistry. I used the textbook but not many people did. I wish I could have her again.
Very sweet and caring. Her lectures are straightforward and she does not try to trick you with her tests and quizzes. Put in the work and you should be able to get an A.
Very straightforward and clear in her lectures and her expectations. Cares a lot about her students, very sweet.
There are a total of 6 quizzes and 3 exams. 2 quizzes and then an exam. The exams are a repetition of the 2 quizzes. Don't miss a day. Do the homework because they help with the quizzes. Go to the TA lessons because they help. I had to work hard and couldn't let my guard down with this class.
Ms. Topich is such a sweet lady and a good teacher. To study for this class, I suggest going over your quizzes before the test (at least 5-8 questions on the test comes from the quiz) and go over the mastering chemistry homework sets. Do this and you'll get a high A on every test. She preps you well for the ACS, she's a good one highly recommend!!
Her lectures are very clear and she does a good job telling you what you need to be prepared for on quizzes/exams and what she expects from you.
Topich is a fair grader who will prepare you well for each of her tests, quizzes and the ACS. Just stay on top of the online homework and you should be fine. Quizzes are 20-25 questions, tests are around 30. Three exams and the ACS, multiple quizzes. If you read her notes/the textbook you should be fine, there aren't any surprises on her tests.
Really sweet lady who is probably your best professor for 101. Very test and quiz heavy. Although she is a bit slow with lecture, it makes you understand better.
There are four tests including the final and each one is counted for 20% of your grade, the remaining 20% is quizzes, classwork, homework combined. Very similar to CHEM101 but if you don't show up to her lectures and SI sessions you have hardly any chance of getting an A. Not at all leinient on grading but is a nice lady and will explain things.
I really did not like this class. Topich did not communicate well, the homework didn't align with what was happening in class, and once the class went online for covid-19 it was impossible to learn anything. Everything I learned during this class was thanks to the SI leader or the internet
She's a nice teacher but her lectures are extremely boring and therefore make it hard to focus and learn the information.
Professor Topich is a genuinely caring professor. She is easily accessible outside of the classroom setting and will do all that she can to clear up any confusion. Attending her lectures and recitation is mandatory to earn an A/B/C. She does not give out handouts and her syllabus is clear. Participate and study and you'll earn the grade you want.
Honestly, after taking the class I was wondering why her score was low? Im not sure if the material is easy or if the professor makes it easy . Either way for an online class she says you can use your notes on all exams and as long as their neat you are set! The homework helps you learn the material easily too. She tells you exactly what to know!
Professor Topich is fantastic. I had forgotten most of my high school chemistry and her lectures are well-structured and explain the concepts in a way that's easy to grasp. She speaks slowly, but you can watch her lectures at 2x speed and still understand all the information. The quizzes/exams are open-note and she tells you what's important.
Really good professor, she uploads lots of materials and responds reasonably fast to emails. The lectures are a bit long, but that's just because uploaded lectures feel longer than an in person lecture would. The lectures are obviously well thought out and structured. Make sure to finish your work and time and you are sure to do well.
Dr. Ruth Topich explains chemistry concepts really well and thoroughly. As long as you watch the lectures, take good notes, and do the Mastering Chemistry assignments you are sure to do well. She makes her exams straight forward and uses some questions from previous quizzes. Her only con is that she talks a bit slow but she's a great professor!
Only issue with this class is the $100 software for homework. You get quizzes/tests every other week but material is repeated & everything is from the lectures. Overall best professor for chem.
Unless you do nothing, this class is pretty hard to fail. The homework and quizzes have a lot of the same questions as the exams, and the lectures are really thorough. If you watch the lectures and do the associated textbook readings (Which are really easy to follow) you'll be fine. This professor knows what she's doing and is really nice, too.
Good teacher. Not terribly easy to get a hold of after class, and the homework assignments are more or less open-book tests rather than a learning tool. You lose points for incorrect attempts even if you correct your work. I feel that's a terrible policy, it just encourages you to cheat on the homework. But that's a small complaint.
This professor does not try to trick you and your assessments are exactly the material she presents. I had to retake this class, and this class was way better, easier to understand, and the professor was kinder than my former professor. TAKE THE ONLINE VERSION IF YOU CAN. It simplifies the class and you do not have to waste time. 10/10 professor.
Amazing professor. 10/10. However, Mastering Chemistry can be detrimental to your grade if you are not careful. There are no drops, and with the confusing collection of emails from the beginning of the (covid) sem, I missed one HW and it SIGNIFICANTLY dropped my HW grade. It sets you back a letter grade. Not her fault, but the system is broken.
Dr. Topich is a nice lady and is really detailed in her lectures which are not that long online. All assignments are straightforward and sometimes mimic the previous quizzes. Open note testing. Overall will be taking her again!
If you have to take online Chemistry with Professor Topich, just don't. The lectures are pre-recorded videos of her just talking into a mic with minimal illustration, and it is absolutely impossible to reach her for anything, you have to go through the 15 TAs for 800 students in a single course. Just don't.
:) TAKE HER IN PERSON CLASS! I am terrible at chemistry and she made the course manageable. There are 5 exams and 5 quizzes, she drops one of each. She teaches what is on the exam so go to class to understand the material.
I am terrible at chem and had no foundation from CHEM101, but her lectures are easy to understand. There were 5 quizzes and 4 exams, she drops one of each. Her grading style isn't made to kill your GPA and her tests are from practice problems she does in class. Her in-person class uses Tophat every lecture, but she drops 5 days.
I don't know how she has good ratings. If you do NOT know chemistry, do NOT take her. She cannot simplify anything for the life of her. Her presentations are so bad and her lectures make no sense and put you to literal sleep. She also doesn't put grades on Canvas so there's no way to know what your grade is until the end of the school year.
Professor Topich is a sweet professor but to be completely honest all of these reviews are so misleading. She is a really boring lecturer and her notes are confusing. However, I did find her exams to be easy since she uses questions from the quiz. A great person but not the best professor. I wouldn't take a class with her again.
Dr.Topich is nice but she is not a good teacher to be honest, her teaching isn't for everyone. The way everything set up is a bit messy. Honestly Chemistry is not an easy class and it is important you have a good foundation but if you have this class you might be in trouble.
To be honest this class was a way too hard for a chem102 class. I am not sure if it was just my experience but she isn't very lenient. If you cannot find anyone better and you have to take this class, watch your emails for hw announcements and don't ever miss a lecture,
Professor Topich makes it easy for you to do well in the class. Tests and quizzes are based off specific problems on lecture slides. She drops a test and a quiz. Better than an average chemistry prof. Attendance is mandatory.
Topich is a cute old woman and knows a lot about chem. Lecture heavy, take good notes in-person and from video/pdf on Canvas. Quizzes and tests are nothing crazy and she reuses examples/questions. Very hard to reach outside of class. I'm an average student & finished with an A since low assignments are dropped at end of semester. Would take again!
Topich is a very nice professor, she posts all the material online so I was able to miss class when I needed to. She follows standard chemistry teachings so I just youtubed any difficult topics. Topich assigned a chunk of HW but it definitely helped me practice for tests and quizzes. Great class format, would take again :)
Professor Topich is a nice person. She does drop a quiz and exam at the end of the semester. But I'm not a fan of her teaching style. Her lectures are boring, and the power points make no sense. I still had to go home and try to figure out what she was talking about.
She's a nice old lady, but her powerpoints don't have much info on them. She spends the whole class on one topic and it spills over into next class. It is so boring sitting in her class, so do not take her unless you already understand chemistry or are willing to put in effort into studying
Prof. Topich is insanely kind, and you can tell she cares about her students. However, the lectures aren't very easy to understand. You definitely have to study in your own time to do well in the class.
If Ruth has one million fans, I am one of them If Ruth has one thousand fans, I am one of them If Ruth has one hundred fans, I am one of them If Ruth has one fan it is ME If Ruth has 0 fans I no longer exist
Her lectures are boring and often take two classes for her to complete one topic. She cares about her students and drops the lowest quiz & test in addition to 5 days on top hat. Chemistry within itself is a hard topic to understand. If she did quiz and or test review more of her students would pass WITH a good foundation for 102.
Dr. Topich is a wonderful lady and I respect her very much, her teaching style just isn't for me personally! Her quizzes and exams are quite straightforward and she does reuse questions, just wish her powerpoints were a little more detailed and her lectures more engaging. That being said, her videos of the lectures are your best friend.
Not too much homework and quizzes and exams aren't extremely hard and are straightforward. However, lectures are intolerably boring especially for someone with ADHD. I would recommend another teacher unless you are prepared to teach yourself everything outside class. The textbook is very useful and used it to achieve this A.
Really sweet, easy to talk to. Class is a lot of work, but it's accessible on Canvas as she posts the lectures.
Chemistry is a hard class, but Topich makes it easy! Attendance is mandatory, but the lectures themselves can be a little boring(so the online lecture videos she posts will be your best friend). She uses mastering chemistry for homeworks- as long as you do them you will understand the class. Go over the quizzes before you take the test ;).
This was my second time taking CHEM 101, and Prof. Topich made it so much easier to understand and even enjoyable to be in class. The lectures aren't necessarily exciting, but just doing the homework and going over the quizzes will basically guarantee a decent grade in this class
I definetly would recommend Topich for Chem 102. To start she has a very calming aura about her that made me personally feel a lot less stressed about what she was teaching. The quizzes are moderately difficult, but she literally reused questions from it for the tests, so half the test is basically given to you ahead of time- KEEP THE QUIZZES
was hard to understand her lectures and her low voice. the content is not helpful for the acs final exam, but her quizzes are similar to the tests
The lectures are well thought out and she is excellent with providing examples. The quizzes are based on lectures. Tests are only slightly different from the quizzes in that there are more questions. If she says pay attention to a particular lesson, please do. She's a caring professional who wants to see her students succeed. Follow the syllabus.
