This lady has no concept of 'class control'...her classes feel like high school
She has a weird teaching method, but seems like a very nice lady.
The test was easy, and often she gave hint during the tests when I asked. However, I don't feel like I learned something in her class.
Teaching method was horrible, I learned more by going to the Learning Center than I did from her. However class was not very difficult and I was able to pass without really learning anything.
I didn't like her teaching style. Relatively strict requirements on homework. Didn't present material in a very clear way. Sometimes she used terms that she'd never explained, and expected them to be known.
Its a really easy class. She always runs out of things to say and ALWAYS ends class 50 minutes early. I wouldn't mind if it was my last class, but then I have to hang out for an hour until english.
She is not clear when explaining things. All homework is online. And she will not grade on a curve. I suggest finding someone else if you dont excel at math
Terrible teacher, I couldn't understand anything. She uses course compass, and I had computer problems. Her response was, use the school computers, so I had to pay for a babysitter to try and catch up. why couldn't she just use a book like every other teacher. Do not take this teacher unless you are good at math and can learn it on your own.
This is not a good teacher, she doesn't have a good class teaching method. She expects everyone to have a complete math vocabulary, and be math geniuses. She even marked me wrong on a test because I did it the way a tutorer taught me, but I still got the right answer. She expects this much but she won't help you if you struggle.
Ruth has a very poor teaching method. This particular class is online, but I have had her in previous courses. She is unclear, unhelpful with material and generally very boring.
Unclear teaching methods, low interest and enthusiasm for the subject, unhelpful nature.
Very helpful and good at explaining. She made weekly worksheets that were really helpful. She's a good mathematician, a great teacher, a sweetheart and a beautiful woman.
This woman is HORRIBLE, she doesn't know how to teach, doesn't appear to enjoy her job at all, doesn't appear to care about students.
She's not the best teacher in the world, but she'll do just fine. If you don't understand she does her best to claify. The homework is done online, which is a plus. There's projects in this class though...
Very unclear & confusing teaching methods. However, she does give students every opportunity to pass the class such as extensions, test retakes, & extra credit. She also grades on participation so attendance is mandatory.
She is completely scatterbrained and it is so hard to learn from someone like that. She always seems confused and our class never got any worksheets, she made us do homework online. I wouldnt recomend her.
i have never hated math in my entire life since i have been in school. math was my passion, but when i took her class i realized that her teaching method really leaves you feeling like she could care less whether you pass or not. very difficult to understand, and doesn't help you out. i really dissaproved. i got behind so fast.don't take her.
She gives tons of homework! This class took time away from all my other classes. She did offer a lot of extra credit and some text corrections tough. Good about extending homework. Be prepared to do homework every day.
Completely disorganized & unclear in her teaching methods. Gave extra credit for attendance when many students were absent (i.e. the day before Thanksgiving). However there was a lot of extra credit available & she extended homework often.
Assignments and tests really difficult. She's really nice and is willing to help and make exceptions for you to get your homework in.
I am a Math major and I was confident I could take this class online without a problem. This was the hardest class I have ever taken in my entire life! She was not willing to help when I asked questions, and she was extremely difficult to understand. The highest grade I received on a test was 64.1%, and this was above average! DO NOT RECOMMEND!
I took this class online. As a person, she is a great person and very willing to give extra time on homework. But the test were extremely HARD and she wasn't helpful at all. She had a hard time explaining things online and the amount of homework was incredible. You had an assignment due every other day in addition to huge projects.
Ruth was just fine. I have no complaints. Just don't take calculus at 7:00 in the morning =D
This was a difficult class. I took it live, and it was still hard to keep up. Do NOT get behind in the homework, she is very willing to extend due dates, but it gets confusing if you don't stay right on top of it. She is very nice but unless you already get math pretty well I wouldn't recommend her.
Took her online course a year ago. Concepts were challenging but the web lectures, the student forum, and different practice questions on the site were extremely helpful. I didn't have an issue with this teacher despite the negative responses.
She uses coursecompass and leaves it open, so homework and quizzez are simple. Inclass quizzez are irritating but i averaged a 2.5/3 until we all got to work together. Her exams are average(89%). Only issue..her lectures are HORRIBLE. dont forget the example problem your showing or get lost showing it. blah. So expect NO help from her WHATSOEVER!
Great math teacher. As long as you show up and pay attention, you will get a good grade.
Great professor. Very helpful if you need the extra help. Very reasonable and accommodating when needed.
Tried to take this class online after taking Math 1010 online w/ an A. 1050 was IMPOSSIBLE to pass. If you asked a question after stating you've read through the book and tried similar problems, she would just refer you back to the book! Do not take from math from this teacher.
I took her class online - haven't taken math in 10 years. As long as you do the homework every day you will do fine. If you are bad at math - don't do it online it may be harder for you, but I love how structured her class is, She responds very quickly to e-mails and I really enjoy this class! I highly recommend it. Just do your homework!
This class was not helpful. She lectured directly from her PowerPoint slides and her explanations consisted of directing you back to the PowerPoint. I failed and I am glad because I have had some awesome professors since.
I do not recommend this professor. I took pre-calculus from her and it was the worst class experience I have ever had. Lectures were unclear and confusing. We would discuss one or two problems from a concept and then move on. No explanation of how or why things worked. Ruth is a nice woman and she may know the material but she is not a good teacher
This teacher was a pain to work with. She is not very flexible and not an easy grader. I was able to pull of an A- in the class but it was online through Pearson which I do well with. The class is passable but I would probably not take a class from her again if given the choice.I had Zeph Smith for Algebra and found him a much better choice.
I do not recommend this professor. Very unclear teaching methods. Often tests were written with problems considerably different from anything in the lecture or the book. Homework took up to 20 hours a week but only counted as 10% of the overall grade. Very unorganized, exam dates often changed the day of the exam. Overall this class was a nightmare
Mrs Trygstad was nice enough but she wasn't the best professor. She lacks confidence in her knowledge of the material and the students pick up on it. She would write any answer on the board that was blurted out by a student, often they were wrong. I really enjoy math but this class was just depressing,
I took this Statistics class online and it was very difficult. I got A's in Algebra, and I spent more time doing homework in this class than ever before (7+ hrs/wk and it's only a 3 credit hour class!) Had several projects, including a group project, discussion posts, 2 tests & a final. Strict deadlines & long wait for grades. Do NOT recommend!
I took this class online, so the Easiness portion is probably related to that. Statistics is a course you should take in class. She requires a group post, which is really hard to do in an online class. Based on other reviews, I expected her to take a long time responding to emails, so my wait didn't seem too bad (she won't respond on weekends).
This class was very difficult for me. It wasn't difficult because of the math itself, it was difficult because she has homework in 3 different places. 2 different places online as well as homework from class. It is very difficult to keep track of everything at once. If you take this class be ready for a lot of homework time.
This class is not an easy one. There are alot of assingments due, and there is a strict due date. You must put in the effort in this class. It is not one that you can slide by in. However, if you do the work you will pass the exam which is the biggest battle. Anytime I emailed her with a question she always responded quickly.
would never take class with her again
Don't ever take this class online!! I sadly made that mistake. There are many assignments and quizzes in different placessation and she grades harshly without an explanation why. I did well on all my assignments besides the tests, and failed the class. Don't take this class online.
Professor Trygstad is a very nice woman, however she is a bit all over the place. She would get confused and throw the entire class off. She is hard to keep on track, but she is willing to extend deadlines and make study guides for exams! Overall, as long as you can be an independent studier, you should be fine!
She really explained things well - helped me overcome my "math phobias"!
Glad this was a hybrid class!! In class her lectures were confusing. She is kind of scatter brained. Expect a lot of hw and quizzes. Easy to pass if you do the work.
I personally thought Ruth was great. I took her online 0980, which originally I was hesitant to do online, but the model was awesome, There are instructional videos for every concept & anything u dont understand u can message her directly about or go to the tutoring center for free. Also, I turned in hw late & she never said anything about it.
A good online class. Canvas organized and if you need help she gets back to you fast. Her class is an easy A if you stay on top of the hw and understand the videos. You have 2 midterms and a final but she gives you a study guide.
Ruth does not explain things in a way that is easy to understand. During the lectures she is all over the place and does not explain why things are done and is very vague in how to solve problems. I always get an A in math and in her class I only got a C. I would not take a class from her ever again.
I absolutely adored Ruth. She was really sweet and always made sure everyone understood the concepts she taught, and she made class feel laid-back and fun. While there were lots of assignments they all helped solidify an understanding of what we learned in class. Ruth is super nice and the class was lovely.
I respect her class and understand that teaching is a lot of work but her teaching style was just sub par. I left class every day very confused and took tutor classes once a week to attempt to pass the class however it wasn't enough. She is just all over the place and if you have ADHD, I would greatly suggest a different teacher.
The best professor, i took 2 classes from her as the first one was too good. IF you attend the class, focus and do the homework, you will do great in her class. She always gave study guides that helps for your exam so just do your work and she always there to help you.
Don't get behind on the homework in canvas. Every other math instructor I have had allows you to work on unfinished homework questions to boost your grade. Ruth Trygstad does not. There are alot of take home quizzes as well. Zeph Smith is full of himself but hes a much better math instructor and he keeps the homework open till the end of the term.
There were many assignments that we were given that had no instruction or formulas. I had to figure it out on my own and some problems took me hours to figure out. The videos that she uses from the University of Utah are confusing and not helpful. I relied more on other resources to learn the material. I spent a lot of time in the tutoring center.
The professor knows what she is talking about, she clearly has and shows an understanding as to what she's talking about, however, I do not feel that she is good at teaching these concepts to students. Every concepts gets rushed through, not explained very thoroughly. When asking the prof for help, she defers you to the tutoring center, no help.
Look, math is hard, no matter how you put it. You can make it a little bit less challenging by having a good professor. SHE is a great teacher, she made trig easy for us, the lectures were great and extremely helpful and the review days before midterms and finals were GOLD(do not miss them!). She explains topics in an understandable way!
The University of Utah videos used weren't great. The audio was very quiet and concepts often weren't explained well. However, there are other resources available including the textbook, study groups, and online tutoring. Instructor replies promptly and assignments are graded quickly. She held review sessions every week.
Won't work with you for simple things, an INCREDIBLE amount of homework, you look at canvas and its just walls and walls of homework. lessons are poorly taught and I had to go tutoring for almost everything. Got a 75% on an exam because my answer was 4.02 and the correct answer was 4.01. Would not recommend her, get someone else.
This class sets you up to fail, bad instructions, bad teaching method, too much homework not enough help, grading is incredibly tight, no extra credit. 110% skip this teacher.
No actual lectures, it is all done through pre-recorded lectures from another professor. About the same amount of homework as you'd expect. Very test heavy. There were some errors in the homework and formulas. She give some basic feedback, but not a lot. Most homework, all quizzes, and tests are automatically graded.
I dont have much good to say because I felt like she was one of the professors who you would have to jump through hoops and hurdles to make her satisfied. I honestly felt like I taught myself the course. When I did have questions I would get half effort answers. Instructor methods are questionable. I would take math 1060 with someone else.
She's great at including students even over an online platform. She grades quickly. She mentioned the online HW was new to her, and I think she had assigned too many problems at first. The HW load was pretty heavy. Partially because it takes a lot of time to type up answers.
I joined this class 2 weeks in. Ruth did not work with me whatsoever and suggested I drop out because the 2 days she gave me to make up the 2 weeks of work was an inadequate amount of time. She was not willing to work or negotiate with me, and is seemingly unwilling to help students if it means more work for her. I absolutely do NOT RECOMMEND.
For 1010 you have homework and a quiz due every single day, and she is very strict on due dates so having an off day is not really an option. That being said, you can work ahead as much as you like but the modules are time consuming and she's not great with feedback or giving help when you need it.
Not very helpful if you contact her with emails doesnt really answer your questions you have. almost not worth it to ask her questions unless its during her office hours. Videos she uses are not very good at explaining whats going on or how to use the equations.
I have never had so much homework in my life. I spend AT LEAST 5+ hours A DAY doing homework. The lecture videos are less than helpful and the videos she records are no where near what the homework is like. I wish I could give a negative rating because this class is absolutely ridiculous.
Super strict on every single problem, including exams. I would get the correct answer but would get marked wrong because its not how she would find the answer. Super scattered so learning a confusing subject by someone that doesnt seem to know whats going on is terrible. This class is set for failure. I cant recommend to skip her class enough.
Buckle up for an insane amount of work, 6 hours of weekly lectures, and nothing to matter because the 5 exams you take are worth all the credit. Had problems not posted until Sunday night that were due before 5 pm for Monday class. Our class stated with 38 students and only 12 by the end. She was unprepared and not helpful.
I don't want to bag on her but the class was really hard. I felt like she didn't explain things clearly and I had to YouTube almost everything I did. The class was also very test heavy and she was a strict grader so alot of people didn't pass the class. I got a low grade and I spent alot of time studying on my own.
Do not take online classes with her, she does not know how to teach online. She said in our orientation that half her students failed last semester, and I understand why. She is not great at explaining things via online lecture and the videos on the homework are inconsistent on how helpful they are. I dropped her class after 2 weeks.
Even though it was an online course with no set hours, I was required to attend zoom meetings twice a week for 2 hours a day. For each zoom meeting, I had to write notes about it, what I learned, etc., that were 100 points each. The notes would be graded on whether or not they were detailed enough to her liking.
Math 1050 isn't easy and if you're not suited for online classes and independent study, this isn't the class for you. You need the prerequisite knowledge to do well also. If you learn best online and you're willing to study, you'll do very well in this class. Ruth has been incredibly understanding and helpful for me and I would choose her again.
She has mandatory zoom sessions because >50% of her students pass and she believes they help. There is stuff on the quizzes and exams that aren't in the homework or taught in the zoom sessions. During the zoom sessions she constantly has students calling out her mistakes. She reads off a script, can't solve unscripted questions.
I spent at least 16 hours a week in the tutoring center and on my time. Ruth does not teach she simply runs through her scripted math problems. She only likes problems to be solved in her liking or she will mark it wrong. When asked to explain the way she did something, she couldn't teach it. She called in another math teacher to explain problems.
Ruth only solves scripted math problems, and doesn't know how to teach problems brought to her from the online homework assignments. You have online and written homework each week that are all worth 100 points. Your entire grade is based on the tests. I spent 15 hours plus in the tutoring center a week having to learn the material on my own + hw.
1080 is a lot of work, considering you're combining two math courses in one semester. It's a lot of math to cram in a short time. Ruth would work out problems for the class with a small bit of class participation. I put in about 15-20 hours a week to homework and studying. Keep the end in sight and don't be afraid to ask questions during lectures.
I took this online class for a gen ed requirement and regret it. This teacher does not know how to teach! When asked for help on one of her online math homework problems, she doesn't know how to solve it. She is also a tough grader. I label all of my steps and write out every step no matter how tiny, but still don't get full pts for showing work.
She does not really teach the class. I have learned more from the youtube videos tagged in the homework than I ever have in the class room. She does not answer questions well and there is an over abundance of homework. I would avoid this teacher if possible but I would still take the course if not.
She does not explain concepts very well and a lot of the stuff we did was with other people, most people in my groups had no idea what was going on. A relative passed a few days into the semester and the extension she gave was only two weeks (not even after the funeral).
Professor Trygstad gives very good lectures and is very willing to help her students. I think the big reason people struggle is because 1050 is a hard class with many prerequisite skills people lack. Please build your way up if you lack skills like factoring or highschool algebra. If you need help she's always just one email away.
When I got on to read these reviews I was worried about taking professor Trygstad's class. Algebra is hard but she was helpful. She wasn't the most amazing professor I've had but she was okay. I wouldn't let the reviews on here scare you about taking her class, their not an accurate reflection. There was a lot of assignments but they were easy.
I took her class and I didn't learn to much from her because throughout the course and when she had class sessions she was not explaining very well throughout during the session when she was trying to solve a problem she will make an excuse saying I think I made a mistake and she can't be doing that cause that will make us more confusing.
Do not take this professor and if it's your only choice wait to take Math 1050 until you can get a better teacher. She puts it on other students or the tutoring center to answer any questions. I got A's in math before her. She cancels class on review days before tests. She literally told my class, "Don't feel bad if you don't pass my class."
Prof. Trygstad cares about your success in her class. If you're struggling, it's not good to keep quiet, ask for help or communicate your concerns. I took an online class and had a little more work to do, but it's in place to help you understand the concepts that would have been taught if you were physically sitting in class during a lecture.
The professor had told us that she was trying a new way to present the class due to many students not passing previous classes. The way the class was presented was very confusing and the lectures were terrible. The professor would rush through them and not answer questions when asked. Do not take math from this professor. Wait for a better teacher.
Ruth Trygstad is an "okay" math professor. Her lectures in the Zoom meetings are more confusing than ever. She doesn't explain her lectures correctly and leaves you more confused when you finish her class. Which makes it harder to do the assignments. There is also a ton of homework in this class every week. I suggest taking another professor.
I am dropping this class because of this professor. She takes points off on assignments for the most asinine reasons, and does not really care about her students learning or succeeding. Even if you learn the material and do the work correctly, if it's not exactly how she expects it to be done you will lose points. And her lectures are not helpful.
Ok. I am currently enrolled in her 1035 class and boy oh boy do I wanna get out. She said and I quote "I've never taught this class before so I don't really know what I'm doing." Really? As a college professor you are expected to be professional. Her and the way she runs her class is a bit of wild ride. I do not recommend her at all.
I am currently enrolled in Trygstad's 1035 class and It is far from a professional college course. If you want to teach yourself math feel free to take this course. She has claimed multiple times that she is unaware what she is teaching especially with harder subjects of math. She is unwilling to help with difficult projects as well. Do not take.
If you enjoy being required to show up to class where nothing is clear and only the exact way she would write it is accepted this is the teacher for you. This is the first teacher that I invented curse words when opening an assignment to look at why I lost points. Also, Ignore the study worksheets and only use previous exams to study or you'll fail
Don't let the low reviews scare you away. She teaches quickly and there is a lot of homework. If you are learning this material for the very first time, I do not recommend her. If you're retaking this course from a recent semester or are already familiar with the material, you'll be fine.
I've only taken online classes in college and this is the first time I have ever struggled. She has zoom meetings to go through problems but she doesn't explain what she's doing at all and makes so many mistakes. I spent 4+ hours on homework every night because I had to teach myself the material. Zero late work policy, but you has 3 extensions.
The lectures are over zoom and recorded. The lectures are an hour and straight to the point, goes directly into formulas with very little background for new topics. They are very dull and hard to get through. The exams affect your grade the most. The average score for most exams was around 40-50/ 100, and the high was usually no higher than 90.
Ruth was a hard teacher. Would dock me every homework assignment for stupid little things. She didn't do reviews which made it hard. Have to do really good on final if you want to pass the class. Overall, wouldn't take it again.
I wouldn't say my experience is the same as everyone else's, but Ruth wouldn't help me at all when I needed help in her class. She is very harsh when it comes to grading the exams and she gave me attitude when I asked her about the questions on the exams. She cancels office hours somewhat regularly and she doesn't upload any of her videos.
This class was difficult because of the teacher. She doesn't really go out of her way to help you out and she is oddly a very strict grader when it comes to math. She didn't really post any reviews until later in the year and the reviews are almost like 10 years old. When I would ask her for help and she would give me a lot of attitude.
Tough grader and does explain things clearly, just moves quickly and you can't always ask questions. No extra credit. Did nothing to help you.
Math 1080 isn't an easy class to take or to teach, and while prof. Trygstad did make some mistakes along the way such as having to change up the planned course schedule, she ultimately did get us through the semester. Tons of homework, but if you actually do it it'll get you through the tests.
Lectures were hard to follow and she often was lost herself. Office hours were constantly canceled. She was very harsh when grading and wouldn't offer much help when we asked questions.
