Don't know how to teach. Boring classes.U will asleep. Even if you try to concentrate, U won't understand anything.
He is very nice and helpful always give extra marks . first its hard to understatnd but later after few classes. U
He is a good teacher with great patience and can inspire you when you get stuck.
Not tough grader , cooperate with students and always inspire and motivate students.
he does not know how to teach. he just read the PPT. very boring, had better study on your own. poor teaching skills.
He knows the subject very well, but sometimes he is all over. :)
He is a patient instructor, if you have questions in class or go to office hour, he always can explain clearly. I recomment not to skip the classese if you are not confident with Stat. He also explained specific question types before assignments or midterms, which allowed me to review effectively. Easy grader. Overall, I recommend to choose him
I really do not know why college hired his as prof. for stat worst prof. ever since I have seen so far. does not respect students, bad teaching skills, all he does is just reading PPT in class. I hope he would not teach this courses again in the future. I dont want to even give him 1 point . i am very very serious about my comment on him.
taking stat1123 with him this time. cool proff and give extra marks. and accessible outide of class.
This guy man. What can I say... He passed me even though I was going to receive F. He gave me C. Take his class!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is a nice man and he is respectful. Midterms were hard but final was veryyy easy. He gave partial grades for each question. In overall he is good.
He is good. I loved the way he tries to help everyone in class. Really helpful and inspiring. Would love to be his student again. I hate maths but it was easy studying with him.
Ruwan is so nice. I just love to be in his class. He is so helpful and always try to give you bonus marks by easy tasks. Midterms are not that tough though.
Ruwan is one the best instructor at Langara. Statistics is not a easy class but he makes it so easy that it is easy to understand and gives great feedback. He explains everything in depth and makes the topic easy. I would highly recommend to take him if you are willing to learn and do well.
Amazing instructor, very helpful, lots of bonus marks except one student kept asking too many questions and confused the whole class and would not stop talking during class he should have dropped the course but he was very helpful answering every questions .
English may not be his first language but if you get past that he is very helpful and wants every student to succeed. No need for textbook, his notes do a better job anyway. Pay attention in class and do like 10 practice questions on each topic and you'll be golden.
He knows a lot about the subject, but needs to improve a lot on teaching. He goes too fast and has difficulties in answering questions from students. He gets confused with his own notes and you have to be very focused not to lose track of everything he is teaching. He is a fair grader, with a lot of bonus points available if you come to class.
A really nice guy and awesome prof. If you show youre trying he will pass you. Stats can be a hard class for most but if you get help from him outside of class you will succeed.
Ruwan is really down to earth person. students who gave negative feedback , they do no ready to understand anything, thats why they have no other option. but seriously he is a very nice guy. he is so very patient and really i cant explain him in words. Usually students get scared to ask questions to instructors but ruwan wil motivate you. take him
very very very very very very very very very very very very nice instructor i have ever met. Really everybody feels comfortable in his class. his way of teaching is just awesome and if you work hard you will get for that. without just thinking , get enrolled in his class. students love him
The worst instructor
Have him for STAT 306 of UBC. His lectures and exam are more math derivation heavy compared to past offering but at the end it's worth it for students. Also, he seems very kind.
He really kind and really wanted to help everyone reach their goal!! If you try, ask questions and come to class you can pass this class. Statistics was the hardest thing I have ever done, but he never makes you feel stupid for asking questions. DO NOT TALK IN CLASS, he can only handle so much. Be respectful & he will do the same. Makes me smile :)
Best stats teacher, would recommend him hands down every time.
I took this class online, and whenever I asked him questions about assignments via email, he would always respond within the day I emailed him. The assignments are about what you would expect, and you have 3 weeks to do each one.
Ruwan is amazing instructor. You would never found any Stats instructor like him. If you want to pass, take his class with no hesitation.
Best prof for STATS. Although he might be hard to understand at times but he tries his best to help students. In-class assignments were done in groups and were quite easy. The quizzes were vey similar to in-class assignments and also very easy. You also have two midterms and a final and he gives lots of bonus marks.
Not recommended. Never answers to questions asked.
Not recommended. Confusing and not even clear the doubts
He is an interesting guy. Hes pretty nice but his teaching is not good. He jumps from subject to subject and does not explain 1 topic clearly. When questions are asked, he does not answer them correctly. He seems very confused himself. He also laughs a lot for no reason. Me and my friends think he comes to class under the influence
Ruwan was such a sassy and fun professor! Showing up to each class is really important because he further simplifies his notes and provides alternate, easier ways to answer problems. In-class assignments are done in groups and are relatively easy. Quizzes are held the class after and are almost identical to the assignments. He also scales!!
He's very caring, super kind, but his accent is thick and his explanation is extremely confusing, and just comes to conclusions. He's very nice with grading his students. but as I said, his explanations are so confusing.
He's a really nice and easy going guy, but don't let that fool you. The midterm wasn't too bad, but the final was extremely difficult. He's honestly a cool guy, but an alright instructor.
Ruwan is an odd character, to say the least. He is a nice gentle person however, his teaching skills are undoubtedly poor. Get the textbook because you will fail based on his notes. His final (worth 40%) was EXTREMELY hard, nothing he prepared his students for at all. Other than that, his midterms and quizzes were pretty easy.
Please avoid this guy! He sets students up for failure. We learn new material and immediately after have to do iclicker questions. On top of that, we had to have a lecture right before our midterm, and he only gave us 1 hour to write the exam. He is all over the place during his lectures & laughs at students. He really should not be teaching...
This was probably one of the most disorganized, poorly curated courses I have ever taken. Ruwan is hard to reach, requires that you take photos of your midterm and quizzes to upload on D2L. He gives one hour to do an exam and makes you do iclicker question immediately after SAYING a concept. If I had another choice I would not take this instructor.
Taken during SUM2020 covid online teaching. Ruwan was a bit unprepared for online teaching, but it shows that he really tried to help the class as much as he could. Stats is a difficult subject, and online was worse, but Ruwan was always available and recipient to grade adjustments. Just email him and let him know youre struggling.
AVOID! Specially if you need to take it online. He is not prepared. We used the lecture notes from the first professor but she got sick and had to leave. Only because she was organized and posted all notes I was able to understand the material. He might be smart but not good at teaching!
Just AVOID!!! he is unprepared, doesn't give you extra practice questions. He doesn't give you partial marks and would not prepare you for the final.
Ruwan's lectures are OK, but his exams' wording seems to be a little confusing to me, can't really tell what he wanted us to answer. He took on teaching this course from our first prof and use that prof's material. But I feel like he did not spend much time reading the guidelines that prof left, for him smtms doesn't really know what we should do.
Never give partial marks even only made calculations mistakes with 1 decimal place wrong, no review before final, changed way of submitting exam from assignment to quiz, which he never gives us any guidance for uploading documents within each question. Switched of method waste a lot of time and most importantly, never understand what he is asking
Explanations are ok and even quite clear. But he wasn't prepared for this course. It will be much much better if he had offered us more practice questions and an actually usable practice exam for uploading pics, and make his wording in tests clearer. I actually enjoyed his lecture but suffered a lot under his tests. Just think bfr you choose him
He is very understanding and supportive
5 Online assignments, fairly easy just long. Mandatory Iclicker which was unpleasant. 4 midterms each on different topics which varied in difficulty. Lectures were long, and Ruwan has an accent and messy writing style that can make it hard to understand him. However he's quite nice, and the marking scheme is fair. Could do worse, Recommended.
At the beginning of the course, he reminded about the extent of difficulty in this course (more than difficult as he said), which helps students work hard. Four tests and 1 final exam are based on lecture notes, so understanding his note then you will be fine. There are also iClick questions during lectures, 5 assignments but they are quite simple
Ruwan is funny and makes class interesting! His grading criteria and what he expects is very clear, there was a group project which for a generally boring subject is good cause it makes it more engaging and fun. Ruwan is knowledgable and accessible to help you if you need more help.
He tries to make the course very interesting and he explains everything in detail. If you have questions, he will repeat until you are clear.
Very dry lectures, test heavy. We had a group project and he gives very little and badly described instructions. The project has 4 parts and we add on to each part but he doesn't update our marks or give us feedback so we have no idea if we are on the right track. would never take Ruwan again even if I had to
Horrible. He doesn't like to give lectures, he's teaching by obligation. He never turns on the camera. It replaces lessons with pre-recorded videos. He couldn't follow the explanations, it was hard to understand what he was thinking. Worst instructor ever. It takes a long time to grade. Run away from him.
Easy marker. Same questions in the exam as a class assignment.
He really cares that you understand the material & answers any questions. Attendance does matter, he does in-class assignments you can't make up, but if you show up it's a guaranteed 90-100% on the assignment. The course is test heavy, but he tries to ensure you know the material & what will be on the test. As far as stats profs go, he's wondeful.
Ruwan is a great teacher. His lectures are a little fast so be sure to pay attention and there is a learning curve on understanding his writing as it can be messy at times but he is otherwise a very caring teacher who goes the extra mile for his students. Be sure to attend class to pass with a good grade!
Doesn't seem to care if students understand or succeed in the course (on one test, for the True or False portion, all answers were False, which other instructors have said is cruel and unnecessary). Hard to understand and not very accommodating.
He is the single worst teacher ive had at Langara. Goes way too fast, doesn't care if you don't understand and if you ask him to explain again he will laugh at your face and do it the same way but only faster which is even harder to understand. Be prepared to be on your own/ Even the project he doesn't discuss in class only by email.
One of the kindest professors at Langara! Although he might not be that great at explaining the subject, as long as you read his annotated lectures, you will be able to catch up and understand everything. He also respond quickly via email and is very compassionate toward students.
He goes a little fast for the students who do not have a mathematics background but explains everything with compassion. He makes us do all the assignments in class and even helps us out while attempting so everyone easily scores a good grade in all the assignments. He is a lenient grader and made stats less load-bearing and interesting for us.
Attendance wasn't really mandatory but he makes us do the assignments in class so if you miss a class, you lose on the assignment which are very easy scoring. He provides all the material and makes learning fun. A good choice for STATs as he explains everything practically and listens to his students.
He is one of the best instructors i have had so far. Just study with the notes which he provides and attend the classes or youtube some lessons if u have any difficulty with the subject. He is sometimes not helpful but will surely give you a good grade most of the times more then your expectations.
Ruwan is amazing! He strives to make the lessons easier for the students to understand, simplifies the material, and doesn't mind repeating over and over until everything is understood. He is supportive and open to questions. His quizzes are difficult and tricky though.
Ruwan is very biased towards students who score well. He definitely takes care of them, but not the mediocre ones. He has repeatedly misbehaved with mediocre students when gone to him for help.
He was good in the beginning but towards the end of the course, he somehow became strict with marking and was rude when went toi him for help.
Bad faculty and don't know how to teach
not helpful, rude, and not useful in any stuff. dont know about his own material
Ruwan is a great prof! He does 4 mini-tests before the final to break up all the course content. He really does care about his students if you put in the work and ask questions to show that you are engaged. For a stats course, he made it awesome to come to class! Cheers Ruwan!
He knows how to teach. He makes the course light and easy to learn. He would give tests/quizzes based on how he teaches it. And even if the final exam is departmental and the another instructor did the whole exam, his student would still be able to answer it well still.
He is kind, nice, and patient. I think he did a good god teaching STAT 1123, highly recommend him.
25% weekly in-class participation assignments. 3 15% midterms. In class assignments and lecture problems were almost identical in format to exams. You know exactly what to expect and he's very flexible and generous with grading. Sometimes he goes a bit fast in lectures and his teaching style makes it difficult to understand, but still a great prof.
Explains his content thoroughly but sometimes gets moody and lets his emotions affect his teaching. His exams were similar to his quizzes and in class work. Replies to emails fast and cares about his students learning. Will always help you when you ask, and tries his best to teach despite english not being his first language.
Awful professor if you wanna fail opt for him, he teaches from his own notes, you will never understand what he says as he cant speak English, most of the student failed in our class because of that, he does not even know what his notes says when we ask question he laughs and says something which only he understand, very biased, awful professor
I loved him as a lecturer. He has very clear notes if you attend the class, and the notes are super helpful for test reviews. He is also super generous with his grading. I think as long as you put the work in then you'll get an A easily, since we get cheat sheets for every tests and quizzes. One of my favorite professors in Langara.
Took Stats 104. He's very helpful outside of class and can be reached easily by email. Lots of in class homework and weekly assignments and quizzes. He's a great lecturer but is fast paced.
I'm surprised Ruwan is still teaching. He often struggles to answer student questions and get upset when you point out his work in incorrect or missing information. He gets moody and cancels class often for confusing and inconsistent reasons. If you're not already good with stats, it is unlikely you will do well. Avoid at all cost.
Accent is not a problem at all, cancels classes a lot though. In class assignments every class, quizzes every other week. Handwriting very difficult to read, lectures move at a very fast pace Good at explaining concepts, bad at providing overall purpose/reasoning of why you are doing what you're doing. Always in a rush.
Worst accent ever, couldn't understand anything in class. Lectures notes are fine, but he teaches at a faster pace.
There is no way you can read his handwriting and his classes are way too boring, he always have these group assignments at the end of every class to kinda force everyone to show up. I really can't pay much attention whatever his saying and ever time I just cant wait for his boring class to be over.
He seems like a nice person, but he isn't a good teacher. He lectures way too quickly, he gets frustrated when we ask questions, and he gave us a massive project and proceeded to teach us nothing about the contents. You'll end up teaching yourself, the notes are helpful, at least. So many students dropped the class, someone should investigate.
I never wore seatbelt while driving to his class because i want to end myself before making it to his class
He is not a good prof at all. He is very impatient and won't clearly talk to you. He assumes you already know everything. I don't recommend ay all.
- Gets mad everytime you ask a question - Handwriting is completely illegible - Group project is horrible he expects you to understand everything, and if you have a question he gets snarky. Also uses OTHER TEACHERS MANUALS that aren't even related to what he wants - Emails are unprofessional (Will reply with 1 sentence and shrug you off) dont take
handwriting is terrible, thick accent, insulting and will get upset at you for not understanding course material. All feedback is disrespectful and mean
The accent is ok, but you cant read his handwriting. His exams are way different from whatever you are covering during the class, even comparing to his quizzes. Overall, I hated each and every second of this misery and now have to retake this course!!!
You can get over the accent. You can get over the terrible handwriting. What sucks is the course structure and organization of his information. Its like trying to decrypt coded transmissions in WW2 trying to understand this guy's notes. DO NOT reccommend taking this prof. The subject is fairly easy but he made it 50x harder.
I had Ruwan for my first retake of STATS1124. Ruwan is a very friendly, easygoing professor. If he made a marking mistake, he will make up the correct grade. If you are confused about anything, he explains the best he can and seems happy to do so. Lectures are straight forward, quizzes and tests are what he covers in class. I would take him again!
This subject was made super complicated!!! Never take this class with him ever again. The lectures made no sense and the in class assignment was never explained to properly. He just assumes that everyone knows the material already instead of actually teaching. The midterms were awful and the grading is harsh.
