His a very nice guy, gives bonus marks like candy, however he gets upset very quick, first class he said we dont need textbook, then halfway through the course he said we should have textbook and starts arguing with everyone. His exams are very tricky, so be carful. Make sure you understand Minitab (software)very well, it will help you pass
Stats is hard for me but ruwan was very kind and did his best to make it painless. Lots of practice questions. A LOT of online assignments (dont leave them to the last minute, utilizing them will help you do well!) Generous about cheat sheets and very approachable if you need help. But. Its still stats haha.
Ruwan was a great prof. super friendly, easily approachable. His lectures can get boring but he uses his time wisely. There is a lot of online assignments and quizzes, one for each chapter, but as long as you do those you should be fine. Stats 104 is a hard class so it is important to practice. He is easily accessible in the math centre as well.
Awesome prof! He gave online assignments which really helped the learning and was generous with the grades. It's not hard to do well in his class if you work to understand the concepts. During class he'd tell stories and always made himself and the class laugh. Would recommend!
Ruwan really made my experience with Stats a breeze. If he gets rushed near the end of the semester he can get a bit sassy & panicked, but he takes the time to go over things in class thoroughly if students are having difficulties. Really generous with cheat sheets and has review days before each quiz and test so if you pay attention you'll be fine
ruwan really cares about you getting good grades, gives bonus marks if he knows you try super hard. took stats again and got an A- because all thanks to him. use textbook, do questions and learn minitab. its soo straightforward if you practice what he teaches. i would take him again 100%
ruwan really cares about you getting good grades, gives bonus marks if he knows you try super hard. took stats again and got an A- because all thanks to him. use textbook, do questions and learn minitab. its soo straightforward if you practice what he teaches.
I liked that he would give us an overview of the material we covered before and tie it into the next lecture by using helpful diagrams and key notes. The problems solved in class were really helpful in our preparation for the quizzes, tests, and exam. His lectures were interesting and straightforward. Overall a really great prof!
Seems friendly and nice enough however his lectures don't prepare you for the numerous extremely difficult quizzes and tests throughout this course. All of the tests and exams comprise of written questions, not a single multiple choice. They are extremely difficult, class averages of tests are usually 50-70%
ALOT of homework one online assignment & one online quiz for EVERY chapter. Attend his online lectures, go over the examples he shares in class and review the online assignments/quizzes and you'll be good for his 2 term tests and final. Make sure you pay attention to examples shared in class (uses similar on exams)Generous with marks, gives bonus!!
I hate math. Ruwan is great at explaining what he is doing and is my only prof out of all 6 of my classes this fall to have set zoom meetings. He does practice questions during lectures and explains how to get each answer to ensure you understand and those questions mimic exactly what is on the exams so if you get the practice you'll get the exam!
I think he is by far the toughest professor i have ever dealt with. His quizzes and tests are not clear and they are nothing compared to what you will cover in lecture or the homework. I would stay away, at least for this course. You also barely get any part marks on questions for tests and quizzes
I would avoid Ruwan at any cost, he just jokes around class and when tests comes you're not prepared. His tests are nothing compared to textbook examples or lecture material. His tests and quizzes were really heavy and you don't have enough time to finish them.
He is a great professor that was always happy to answer questions. He's really funny as well and made a class like stats not too bad. His tests were straight forward and not difficult. He's not a hard marker and you can usually talk to him about your test/quiz marks if you think you deserve part marks etc.
The course was very clear, there were multiple opportunities to demonstrate learning. He was very understanding if more time was needed etc. His lectures were very boring, I found it hard to pay attention. Also never really taught the material, just went over definitions and read the textbook, didn't teach us how to do problems. Don't recommend
Ruwan is very rude and disrespectful towards his students, you can't ask a simple question without him backlashing or simply ignoring the question. He also keeps his class average between 50%-60%. I would stay away from his class.
Clearly understands the subject matter he is teaching. However, he will test you on material that you are not prepared for/expecting. According to Ruwan, you should be able to answer all test questions because you know the theory. However, he doesn't teach the theory that in-depth. As a fourth year, one of the hardest final I have every written.
Ruwan can be a little confusing at times but he will try his best to help you. He truly wants his students to succeed. There is a lot of homework but fairly easy if you understand the material and will help you with tests/quizzes. The final exam is made into three parts and you have an hour per part. It's similar to the test/quiz. No surprises.
Awesome guy and clearly knows his stuff, but horrible to communicate with. Didn't respond to numerous emails I sent throughout the semester and when he did respond it would be a 1-word answer. Expects you to know things that you were not taught, and grades were rarely posted.
MOST HONEST REVIEW- stay away from his class. Expects you to know everything and won't help you with anything u have difficulty in. Doesn't reply back to emails unless you email the same thing twice. Doesn't bump up your grades a little bit. I had 49% on my one test & he couldn't give me 50. He had hard time managing his class. Overall just NO
Ignores emails, doesn't really give any good feedback, very rude and disrespectful. Doesn't really seem to know what he's teaching. Doesn't give part marks, tough grader. Would never take a class with him ever again
Felt like 400 math class. Didn't follow class outline/description and nothing lined up with textbook. Hard to pre-study for lectures which I needed to keep up. Lectures and hw rarely on the same topic even. Hard to know what to expect on tests and inconsistent marking. Only provided marked test if you ask. Never been so stressed over a class before
Honestly, he is a kind prof at first but his communication skills are horrible as in he does not reply to the question in the email. His exam was the hardest exam I've ever written 3 hours long with each part due after every hour. Tests are easy if you really know your material.
he was an okay professor but a really nice guy, you had to attend class to pass and hw didnt connect much to his lectures. mark is solely based on tests and his final exam was the hardest thing ever i was so stressed. Hes a good teacher if you dont struggle in math and can understand the concepts on your own by reading the textbook or doing the hw.
personally would recommend his class, he's a very confusing prof and often rushes through content and material. Avoid his class, take someone else.
Whatever you do, do not take his class. Very confusing professor and he switches his expectations for tests each class. Will not give you a clear answer to any question and gets upset at students for not understanding something when he fails to explain it.
Do NOT take STATS (any) with him. Everyone I know who has taken him has regretted it. Unclear expectations and bad at responding to emails. Overall worst experience ever. AVOID at all costs.
He is very good at explaining and allows mostly everything to be calculated on minitab. he gives cheat sheets and goes through questions in class.
Tests are loosely based on lecture notes and webwork, which means you cannot prepare well for every tests. He is actually alright if you are able to set an appointment to do math questions together, but in class he teaches in snail pace and doesn't give you too much practice, even if he did, it won't be similar to test questions. GET READY TO READ!
his class is 50/50. Im not great at math and got an A because he does teach pretty well his lectures were full of notes and questions he solved with us. He can be confusing at times but if you pay attention and do the homework you should do good. His final exam was painfully hard though full of many questions i was stressed. chapter exams easier
His lectures are pretty straightforward and he gives many examples. If you pay attention and do the homework you will do well. The exams weren't too bad and were similar to hw questions. However, he posted new lectures the day before the final. His final was the hardest and most stressful thing ever! It took many the whole 3 hours to complete.
He is nice & all but he explains things in a over complicated way, also in my experience this is one of those classes were you need to do pre readings and watch videos on the unit you'll be learning in class that day before attending, so its like teaching yourself the course, the exam weighs 35% and midterm weighs 25% hw, quizzes inclass is 40%
I would not recommend taking Ruwan for Stat 104 because he goes through material very fast and explains it in a very over complicated way. In my opinion, stats needs to be explained in a very clear and simple way but Ruwan rushes through chapters during class. He can sometimes be passive aggressive towards students when they ask questions in class
Impossible to track what is going on in class. Expects students to know a lot of the material already, even in an introductory class and explains things in a very complicated way. Exams were marked quickly, but had confusing feedback. He is a nice person but lectures and grading were confusing. Homework is almost never related to lectures.
The material in this course is difficult and unintuitive compared to other Math courses such as Calculus, and Ruwan's teaching style seems to multiply that difficulty rather than alleviate it. Too little time is given to explaining theory, instead he opts for assigning complicated in-class group questions. I did find his grading to be very fair.
Ruwan is a helpful and understanding prof. This course is difficult and requires a lot of practice. His lectures are decent but take advantage of his office hours and ask questions. The exams are based off of the concepts and theories taught in lectures and webwork but dont expect exact questions.
Ruwan is knowledgable, caring, and helpful. He adjusts his pace in lectures to match the students understanding. He asks lots of questions to engage the students. If you show up, follow the lectures, and do the webwork assignments you will do well. Stat 270 is difficult, not as difficult as calc 2 but close. Expect to study lots.
Took MATH 270 with Ruwan in the fall semester and had a good time. His grading scheme is 14% Webwork, 10% In-Class Assignments, 36% Tests (12% Each), and 40% final exam. This was a fair marking scheme and gave you lots of chances to succeed. The test material is connected pretty well to the course. During class he will answer questions and help out
Ruwan is really nice and his lectures were easy to follow most of the time. He's really good at answering any questions or anything you're confused about in class. You're graded on many things, so if you do the homework, in-class assignments, and IClicker questions, you'll still get a decent/good grade even if you do not do so well on 1 or 2 exams.
Ruwan was an amazing prof for stat 104. His lectures are funny however can be a bit challenging at times. Chapter homework wasn't too difficult to do (answers are on chegg if you get stuck) and in class group assignments were not hard. Overall Ruwan is a solid prof and I highly recommend taking him
Ruwan was an amazing teacher who was a fair grader on tests/ exams and was pretty quick to reply to emails. This is a class that you will definitely need to attend all of the lectures for otherwise you will easily get lost in the material, so just be prepared for that.
I would not recommend Ruwan, tough grader, confusing professor and does not care about his students.
I would not recommend this professor if you are not good at math, he makes it very hard to understand and does not help. He does reply to emails quickly, there were 3-4 tests, 1 final exam on all units, assignments for each unit (20 questions with a, b, c), and quizzes online.
Ruwan is a pretty solid professor. Knowledgeable, helpful (when you ask), and effective at communication. If you attend every lecture, pay attention, and study a little, you will excel in any of his courses.
Some topics very quickly when possibly more detail or a simpler explanation are needed. Could be the way the course itself is structured forcing him to condense important topics. I still believe his class could be done better. I don't recommend this prof at the moment. Also his tests are hard, very hard. Mean of class test score was below 50%
Do not take a class with him. It blows my mind how someone this incredibly bad at teaching does it for a living. He is also disrespectful when you approach him for help, making the class even more unbearable.
Do not take this professor, he fails to teach the course material. He spends class time rushing through problems as fast as he can rather than thoroughly explaining how to do them. His tests are easily 2x as hard as any of the homework or in-class work. He believes his tests are fair even when the average is below 50 and doesn't help you learn.
I am still shocked on why he is allowed to teach a course that is offered once a semester and is a prerequisite for many courses. He makes multiple mistakes in the tests he creates, wastes students time, and then eventually counts that question towards the final grade. He is also very strict grader. I got less than 50% in all tests!
While this is my second time taking this course & I found more success with Ruwan than the first time around, Ruwan's tests are quite difficult. The in-class work and online webwork are fine, but the test material is quite difficult. 1st term test was straightforward, but the 2nd & 3rd were not, and the final was the most difficult out of the tests
very tuff and the inclass assignment do not help for the tests. if you have him good luck
#####################
this prof fails to provide good notes throughout his entire time with him. I legit get more confused watching his notes, just read the powerpoints and understand minitab, you're pretty much on your own with this guy. He rambles on formulas then shows a quick function on minitab on how to do it in 10 seconds, so understand minitab on your own andurg
I took him for STAT104 in the summer semester. Tests and exams are 100% based on the content learned in class. The notes he does for lectures are very helpful. Overall, if you study and go over the question and examples, you are guaranteed a good grade!
Be prepared to get your gpa hit by this course.
非常好教授
Nice guy, not so nice exams.
not take him ever
gets upset and irritated when asked a question and very passive aggressive at the same time, your on you own with this guy.
His tests are not based at all off the in class assignments nor the notes. He adds questions that are beyond the scope of this course and is rude whenever asked a question. He has homework assignments that do not relate whatsoever to the course content. The final exam and midterms were very difficult he asked questions that were never introduced.
He rushed through his classes and his writing is near impossible to read. His midterms are very difficult and the questions he asks are not even off the notes or assignments. As I was leaving the final exam room I took a look around and almost all the papers were blank. Do not take this guy unless you want to drop your gpa.
His exams are very lengthy and he gives lots of in class assignments which are hard especially when you just went through the lesson. He expects us to know the chapter in one class and expects us to do a 20-30 min assignment each class. His exam questions are difficult to understand and comprehend.
He rushed through the chapters and then added questions we never learned on the tests.
He has lots of homework assignments and one of these is a weekly journal. He expects two pages and he does not mark it until the very end of the semester so you have no idea if you are even doing it right. I followed all of the criteria and wrote 2 pages (roughly 800 words) and I got a 6/10.
How is the is guy even allowed to be a teacher he is so incompetent at explaining the material and then he put even more complicated questions the exam.
He cannot teach the course content properly and his exams are very hard. Take this guy if you like dropping your gpa.
He is not clear when teaching.
Exams are very difficult and the notes do not help. Goodluck.
He gives lots of assignments and the exams are too hard for an introductory course.
Exceptional at not knowing how to teach.
Genuinely this is one of the toughest classes I have ever taken. I don't even know where he gets his exam questions because they are clearly not from the notes.
Homework and classwork were fair, but tests focused on less emphasized aspects. Ruwan often says 'yeah' and 'so' without clear detail at times, making concepts confusing. He's open to questions but struggles to explain well. On the final exam day, his unhelpful attitude toward a student's computer issue was disappointing. Final grading felt rushed
Anytime in the exams a computer doesn't work he just tells the student “what do you want me to do”. He also doesn't know how to explain the lessons very well as he just assumes we know it already.
Worst prof ever. His final exam had questions that were never in any of the notes, in class assignments, or Webworks and should never be in an introductory class like this. I recommend you never take this course with him!
His exams were terrible. Glad to be done with them.
Speeds through lectures, doesn't give any supplemental material, and expects you to know the material at a PhD level in order to answer the ridiculous difficult and never before seen questions on exams. It amazes me how he is the only professor who teaches this course, and has no clue how to properly teach the material. Unbelievable.
It really amazes me how he expects his students to solve extremely high level and difficult questions on exams while he himself has zero teaching skills. He goes over the material really quickly and his in class problems are not helpful at all. I know there are no other options for this class but AVOID him if you can!!
Worst professor you can ever take, I don't understand how a professor this terrible can even have a job at a university. 50% of the final exam was content about the last 3 lectures which he only covered in 2 classes. It feels like he enjoys seeing his students fail and can't wait to give out the horrendous marks back. Listen to us, don't take him.
This teacher left me speechless every class. The material was poorly explained, and the exams were far harder than what was taught. It felt like he was trying to fail us rather than help us learn. The lectures were unclear and unhelpful. I wouldn't recommend this class unless you want to spend your time stressed, frustrated, and confused.
His exam questions are totally different from what we learn in class so it makes it impossible to get a good mark. He isn't much help either when explaining concepts or answering questions.
Does not properly explain the chapters and just flies through the lessons, leaving students feeling confused and not knowing what to do on the exams.
His exams do not reflect what we learned in class. He puts impossible questions on the exam that you can only get right if you're already a pro at statistics.
Don't take this prof.
Impossible to understand his lectures and his exams are much different than what we learn in class.
The prof has a thick accent and his writing is impossible to read. The course consists of in class assignments after each lecture, weekly homework assignments, weekly journals, 3 midterms and a final. He doesn't mark journals till after final so you won't know how your doing. The exams are not out of notes. Not sure where he gets the questions from
The exams are terrible, they are nothing like the hw or notes or the in classes. Do Not Take This Prof. He gives cheat sheets but they are useless bc the questions aren't anywhere from notes.
The professor's lectures are confusing and hard to follow. Exams are unnecessarily difficult and don't align with the homework or class notes. Avoid taking this course if possible.
I find this professor's accent very difficult to understand, which makes it hard to follow the lectures. The exams are much harder than the class notes and lectures, leaving me unprepared despite my efforts. Additionally, he doesn't seem to offer much help in class when we need clarification.
Just take notes during class especially during the minitab tutorials so you can practice at home. Allocate an hour a week to do the weekly assignments/quizzes (I just did them during class if I had time or got bored) and you will succeed. Keep up with course content and ask questions if you get lost otherwise it is hard to recover. Easy to talk to.
I would advise against taking this professor's class. I want to express my concern about your attitude during class when students ask questions. It often feels as though you dismiss us or respond with impatience, making it uncomfortable to seek clarification. This approach can discourage learning and create an unwelcoming environment.
Follow his lecture notes as majority of the tests are based on that. Final is by far the hardest test so start reviewing early, fairly generous marker if he knows you participate and try in class and show up. Be sure to do his reflections each week as that is what significantly boosts your grade, and is the main reason why many failed.
Don't take this professor. The exams are not even 10% of what he taught in his lecture, so be prepared. More than half of my class failed . He needs to understand what is meaning of exams and test. Hope i would not have taken him
The absolute worst professor I have had a this university. If you ask him any sort of question, he will answer with the most confusing non-sense that does not answer your question and get angry at you for not understanding. He makes mistakes on tests and does not acknowledge them. Total narcissist with no care for his students. I should have an A+
I would not recommend this professor if you have other options. The syllabus is very difficult, and the tests are much tougher than what is covered in class. The way he teaches does not align well with the exams, making it hard to succeed. If you're looking for a fair and supportive professor, this may not be the best choice
His exams( final+midterm)are completed different than the class work and lectures . He's difficult to approach, if any question is asked in class he makes you feel like belittling and embarrassing. Even his lectures are difficult to follow and he rushes to go further.
Doesn't teach clearly and is condescending when asked for clarification. Test questions are way different than what he covers in lecture. UFV has several great math & stats instructors, go to one of their classes instead of Ruwan's.
It is very difficult, and without a doubt the harshest grader I have ever seen in my many years of study. He said in the first day of classes, 50% of the students failed his course in the previous semester. On an average university class, approximately 22-33% tentatively fail a course. Consider those statistics. Feeling lucky?
He's a nice guy but he blazes through the lecture to get to in class work, as well as he will skip over difficult/confusing parts with “and this is simple”
This guy speed runs his slides and puts questions on the exam that are a million times harder than in class work. It's like he wants the students to fail.
Worst professor at UFV, can't believe he's the only one that teaches this class. The fail rate is insane for a basic statistics class, he should be fired, embarrassment to UFV.
Professor Ruwan is a super kind down to earth guy who knows what he's talking about. Everyone mad here is just upset they didn't get a good mark because Ruwan knows how to teach and is extremely friendly.
I'm not quite sure why Ruwan's ratings are so bad. He is good at teaching and the only bad thing about him is his marking/feedback. He is a very tough marker who will take off points for the smallest mistakes. Overall he was nice.
I never wore seatbelt while driving to his class because i wanted to end myself before making it to his class.
The exams were nothing like the assignments or quizzes. Show up every class? Study the quiz and assignments? Won't make a difference.
why is he giving a quiz the first day of class?? he says its a "refresher for calculus" but its gonna count for our marks like huh? make it make sense
He is so bad. I took him twice since I failed the first time and there were no other options. just don't take him you will regret it.
This is by far the hardest prof I have ever seen. His assignments and quizzes are no help for the exams.
So many assignments and not one helps with his exams. This class will destroy your gpa don't take it.
dont bother taking with him he makes it really hard for no reason especially his tests quizzes and exams ur better off taking it somewhere else tbh
His in class material doesn't even correlate to the exams idk how he expects to know this without ever teaching. Take stats somewhere else.
He rushed through his lectures and has hard assignments that the notes don't help with.
Cooked get ready to study, got a 35% and 10% on first 2 quizzes and i studied a lot good luck!
He doesn't know how to teach, he rushes through everything and the stuff he teaches isn't even on the exams.
He gives assignments and slides that do not correlate with his exams. They are way too difficult and the average of the class is less than a 50. Don't take stats here.
I don't normally rate anyone here but please don't take this guy for your class, save yourself and run the other way if you see his name for any of your class
This guy is horrible; his notes are like reading hieroglyphics, and the tests never fully correlate with the in-class material. He's a smart guy, just a horrible professor. If you ask any question in class, he just repeats it back to you and expects you to understand. He makes a really easy class super challenging.
Lecture material and homework do not directly correlate with test materials. Extremely tough grader. Median exam grades in both midterms were around 54%. The hours of demand to get a decent grade are easily 10x your average course. The course seems designed for the average student to fail or barely pass. I recommend against taking him.
Genuinely the worst prof at ufv esp for a second year stat course. Idk why ufv can't at least rotate professors or at least open multiple sections at once so we don't get stuck with this guy
This guy DOES NOT ANSWER EMAILS. I couldn't get into the textbook and my car had fallen into a ditch the day prior and couldn't get to my exam and there was no word from him despite him being on his laptop always in class. He also never answered any emails prior about missing class due to illness. Dont take his class.
This is my first time writing a review, but this professor is honestly terrible in UFV. He doesn't listen or help at all. The final is insanely hard and nothing like the assignments, or any other stuff matter and your whole grade depends on it. You can work all semester and still fail. No support, no care or understanding. Avoid class if possible.
Guys honestly worst day I chose to take stats 106 with him he is terrible professor in ufv he doesn't explain anything well just made you do bunch of group assignments with people his finals were super hard which he made completely different from his class assignments and mid terms. Recommendations take other stats professor but not him please.
Ruwan explains things only with “yeah and “so” his finals are very hard when it's supposed to be easy as first level stats class he gets mad and agressive and don't explain when you reach out to him. He is a tough grader. I would suggest you all honestly to take other good stats professor if possible but not him please you will definitely fail
You'll be buried in assignments, quizzes and midterms, yet none of them prepare you for the finals. This course with Ruwan will destroy your GPA. Don't take it. He is heartless guy doesn't understand or listen
I don't get why UFV doesn't have another Stats 106 professor in Chwk. But He's awful at teaching always on his laptop or on calls with someone. His finals are way harder when it's supposed to be easy than my other tough classes. Don't take stats with him guys you will regret it.
This man is horrible doesn't even know what he explains he just briefly read through slides and all he says is use “minitab” or “R” and don't tell you how to use them.
All I wanna say is my I am regretting a day I choose to take class with him, please don't take any stats with Ruwan.
Assignments and slides and mid terms don't match the final, the final was unfairly hard, and the class average is very less. Avoid taking stats with Ruwan he is Awful man I ever seen in life.
I am telling from my years of experience with other stats professors at ufv who are best and understanding but Ruwan He loves to Fail or lower his students grades intentionally it makes him content so i highly suggest DO NOT take any of stats classes with him if you don't want to lower your gpa.
This is my first time writing a review, but this professor is terrible. Don't take his class. He makes the course intentionally hard so students either fail or barely pass and does not care about student learning. I've never spoken badly about anyone before, but I honestly hope UFV removes him one day he doesn't deserve to be a professor here.
I don't understand how he even got degree he is worst guy as a professor don't take stats 270 with him.
I have been trying to contact Ruwan by sending emails but he didn't replay me back, all tho I have seen him on his laptop mostly in class guys he is not accessible to students.
Do NOT take any stats with Ruwan. I've seen so many reviews from students who felt the same way unfair, unclear, and frustrating. Everyone I know who has taken his class regrets it. Expectations are never clear, exams are graded extremely harshly, and the course feels unnecessarily difficult he will definitely Fail you. Avoid him at all costs.
I taught myself this course. so why am I paying the university to employ this person? Ruwan failed to do his job on nearly all metrics. Lectures were read from a sloppy power point. He failed to cover the methods of using minitab and R to compute answers. Homework questions were AI generated through Achieve Macmillan Learning.
He has terrible handwriting, an equally bad attitude, rushes through lectures, and gives difficult assignments that aren't covered in the notes.
This class is basically self-teaching but with harder exams.
Would not recommend unless you enjoy confusion and unnecessary difficulty this class will fail you
Intentionally confusing and convoluted descriptions in given materials, doesn't post completed slides, parts of formula sheets often don't match exam questions, incredibly niche and unfair exam questions and design that don't match the course material, has one of the worst handwritings I've ever seen which he uses for his lectures and notes.
The instructor is reasonable, but the course content is quite heavy and demands a lot of independent study. The exams are more challenging than what is covered in lectures.
Basically self-teaching with unfair grading he doesn't even know how to explain. Would not recommend.
I missed classes due to a family situation and went to him for help, but he barely explained anything and just told me to “refer to the notes,” he posted which didn't help at all. Completely unhelpful.
Overall, it was a difficult experience. The class was challenging, and the final exams were tough.
Instruction could be clearer, and grading criteria should be explained in more detail. Additional support for students would be helpful.
