Great guy. Knows his stuff very well and is very enthusiastic about the course material. Course material itself is kind of boring but Dr. Allen makes it interesting with videos etc. Exams are straight forward and entirely out of the notes and reading assigned so make sure you do the reading :D
Ryan is not the best teacher in the world, but he is certainly far from the worst! Very organized and sticks to the syllabus. Quick to hand back assignments. Very accessible for help and responsive to feedback. Exams not too hard, but definitely do all the reading! I would take another class with him.
Knows his stuff.
final was cumulative which means following the weekly reading assignments were useful
I absolutely love him! He's a great lecturer and he's really funny too. Powerpoint notes were great and exams/assignments were pretty fair. Plus, he's not too bad on the eyes either!
very good lecturer clear and concise and very interested in what he is teaching...exams and assignments very fair and powerpoints were easy to follow along with overall great teaching ability definitely recommend taking this class
Dr. Allen is really good. hes simply, funny and doesnt complicate things what so ever. he gives great examples and they're easy to remember. oh also a lot of movies in the class!
Great course! Dr.Allen speaks in a clear and concise manner. Lectures were always intresting to attend. Exams were fair/easy. Didn't use the textbook much, but it is still a helpful resource.
lectures are a well summary of each chapter and exams are based on them but he throws one question in each exam that is related to the book...HW are a reinforcement of points covered and a great way to earn easy marks...final was fair but a little tricky.
Cute, funny, smart yet self-deprecating so he made an 8.30am class actually enjoyable. He's very helpful, replies emails within 24hrs.Clear on his expectations.Exams could be a little tricky so you have to know your details well.Has a strict grade-cutoff curve (an A+ is >97,etc):altho I hated it at first,it feels good now to say I earned a 'Ryan-A'!:)
Great sense of humour and a fair marker. He is also: organized, clear, helpful and passionate about the material. This course is not an easy A, it requires attendance and studying, but it's worth taking because of this Prof. Definitely recommend it!

I wish he could be my permanent instructor for the lesson of life! Tee hee!Easily the best prof and also one of the most enjoyable classes I've ever had. You learn that organized profs are far and few between. He's in the top 95% of that curve. Take him; he's the best in the faculty. That's a money-back guarantee!
Seriously one of the best professors in the faculty! If you get the chance to take a class with him, do it. Environmental health probably has the potential to be a dry topic, but this course was so interesting and entertaining. The grading scheme threw some people off, but his marking and exams were very fair. Best course I've taken at SFU!
Dr. Allen is the best professor I have ever had at SFU. Not only is he super organized, helpful, intellectual, AND engaging, he is also an overall stand-up guy. This class was actually really awesome, and he plays a major factor in that. Who knew environmental health could be so interesting? I highly recommend students to take this class with him!
He is the best, and is now in my top 3 profs at SFU.
Dr. Allen is one of the top professors in the HSCI faculty! He is hilarious and makes the lecture very interesting so it's impossible to fall asleep in his class (even though it's at 8:30am). He is always there during office hours and makes time for you if you can't make them! Amazing professor, I would definitely take any of his classes again
He'll ask you a question. If you answer it wrong, he'll re-phrase his question so that you understand it. Amazing prof. He is really helpful and compassionate towards his students. I almost don't want this course to end.
I was not interested in the content, but he made it interesting. Wasn't a fan of the textbook, but you don't need to read all of it to do well. Just to brush up on the parts you're not clear on. I liked the homework assignments, they were helpful. I love no tutorial, but 3 hour lectures are tough. Great prof overall.
This class seems easy until you hit the final which is very hard. Also unfairly distributes I clicker marks. each class is graded differently for attendance according to how many iclicker questions they are. As a result even if I attended 80% of classes but got 0 for I clicker participation because they are not counted equally.
One of my most enjoyable classes at SFU to date. Extremely clear on assignments and exams, if you attend all classes and pay attention in lectures it would be hard to do worse than a B. Iclicker for attendance randomly, very fair professor, makes the course material interesting. I scored perfect on my final despite a concussion. No tricks or games.
Ryan is the best HSCI prof at SFU! Knows what he is talking about and makes sure all the assignmentsexams were fair. Kept 8:30 lectures interesting and funny! Loveeeeed this class (and him)
BEST prof at sfu, thus far!! Wish he taught more HSCI courses!
I loved Ryan's lectures. He's very clear and uses recent examples which keeps the content interesting. The midterm and final were challenging but fair. Make sure to attend the lectures to get the fill in the blanks on the slides as well as iclicker marks.
I would say that Ryan has been my best prof so far at SFU. I thought this class would be one of my driest classes out of all my other classes, turned out to be the one I looked the most forward to. He made environmental health science INTERESTING. Wish he taught more classes!
Amazing professor! He is very knowledgeable in his field, and makes his research relate-able. I learnt so much from him, and would definitely take another course with him.
So, I love this prof. He's clear and concise and his midterms and finals are challenging but fair in a good way. He gets you passionate about the subject. The only thing I didn't like was that you HAD to attend class to fill in the notes and get your TopHat (attendence) marks.
Great professor, really passionate about the environment, as were his choice of guest speakers- which he heavily emphasizes on the tests. He has a great upbeat attitude and it reflects in his lectures. Just be warned he is quite liberal, and his guest speakers are like very far left.
Definitely the best prof i've had at SFU so far. He managed to make a 3 hour lecture at 8:30am fun and enjoyable. Gives great explanations and you can tell he really is passionate about the subject. Fair exams and assignments. Only downside was that there were too many guest lecturers. Would 100% take another class with him
A very nice prof. Knowledgeable in the field of environmental pollution. His exams are based off of homework questions and lecture material. The only annoying thing is instead of using i clickers, we are required to use Top Hat, which costs extra money (about $27 CAD or more per term) to answer questions in class (you need to answer 80% of those).
This is by far the best class I have ever taken at SFU... and its online. The lectures are perfect as he gives lecture slides and a video explanation. On canvas, it is organized and easy to use. Ryan Allen easily answered any discussion questions and give interesting lectures online. Great Class!!
Really easy online class. I started studying the day before for the final and still got over 90%. Don't screw up the midterm because it's worth as much as the final though! Really fair and clear lectures, assignments, and exams.
Didn't care for environmental health at all until I took this class. Made lectures super enjoyable even at 8:30am. Very clear and fair with assignments and tests. Study his slides and you should do great. Amazing prof
Amazing professor. Engaging lectures and fair assignments/midterm/final.
I wish more profs were like Ryan Allen. He's really passionate about what he teaches, super clear, concise and helpful!
This is by far the best course I've ever take! He is really passionate about what he teaches, and he made the lecture super fun even as 3 hours lecture at 8:30 in the morning! I wish I can take another course with him again.
Hands down my favourite professor! Hes a fantastic lecturer, very caring and funny. His marking is very fair, study the learning expectations and youll do very well.
One of the best profs, if not the best in the Faculty of Health and Sciences. I recommend anyone to take his class; the 1st assignment helped me find my passion.
Material is quite easy, studied the day before midterm and still ended up with around 90%. Hands down one of the best profs in the Health Science faculty!
can confidently say he's one of the best professors at SFU. caring, engaging and definitely passionate about the topic. some material might be dry but ryan makes it 'fun'. midterm and final are weighed the same (35% each) so do well on those! only bad part of this course is the grading scale is ridiculous. need 70% to pass with a C-
I swear this man is Troy Boltons father from high school musical. I would have every future course I have to take be recorded by him. Very interesting and engaging to listen to. Only thing- I did not love the grading scheme at all. The grading within assignments are 'scaled' to accommodate, but miss one question, its 6-9 points off a total of 100.
This is the ONLY class in my entire 5 years of schooling that really sparked an interest in me. Multiple 8:30am classes every week and I showed up to every single one of them! Now I'm pursuing a career in environmental health and I have this course/prof to thank!
Fall 2018, we got 2 classes cancelled. The prof said that the assignments are meant to reflect our exams. However, our class had high assignment grades, but our midterm ave just reached C. Yet, he blamed the whole class for getting poor grade on the midterm because we didnt do the assignment INDIVIDUALLY, which I think we did.
Really great prof, clearly passionate. No more work than you would expect out of a class, probably even less than most upper divisions. This is the only class that I honestly recommend to my peers.
Don't let his crazy grading scale scare you away from taking his class. Friendly, passionate prof that makes 3 hr lecs at 830am interesting. Exams/assignments are fair and representative of the material from lecture. The inclusion of the lecture videos into the slides (some which he makes himself) help explain the material and break the monotony.
His grading scale works out in the end!! His class is awesome, very interesting. The class is convenient as there are no tutorials, no group work, online recordings and its just a one three hour block each week. His MT and Final were fair, actually did better on the final (80%), and assignments were super easy & like notes. Take with him!!
One of the best HSCI profs I've had. He gave engaging lectures and was very helpful during office hours. You won't regret taking this course.
Don't be scared by his grading scale, it all works out in the end! Great lecturer, made a 3 hour class feel like 30 mins. Assignments are easy, and tests are straightforward and fair. He's very accessible and always willing to help as much as he can in office hours. Material of the class is also very interesting!
Ryan makes his lectures interesting EVERY week. He's also funny which is a huge plus and makes an effort to connect with the students. Course load was straight forward if you do your homework and pay attention in class. iClicker questions count for marks so GO to class!! His different grading scale is nothing to be concerned about either!
Took this class on a whim and so glad I did because it has been my fave class of HSCI so far. Each lecture is interesting and applicable to the real world. Clear grading, homework is manageable, and it complemented learning in HSci211 well.
HSCI204 by far has been the best course Ive taken at SFU to date. His lectures are super interesting and u can tell he's passionate about the topic, which really rubbed off on me! If your interested in environmental health and want to learn about things that are relevant to you and your community you'll like this course. 11/10 would recommend
Best Hsci course I've taken so far. Learned a lot and it was a fun class
He is highly passionate about what he teaches, and this reflects through his teaching. By far one of my favourite professors. I would strongly recommend taking a class with him.
A late review but Ryan was by the far the best professor I've had during my time at SFU. His enthusiasm and high energy in teaching made me want to attend every single ones of his classes, and the content for this course was very interesting to learn about as well. Highly recommend taking this course if Ryan's teaching it! :)
Late review - but I took this class a year ago with Ryan, and think it was one of the best I've taken at SFU. The content is interesting, and the lecturer is engaging, which made it a truly enjoyable class. I can't believe it but I've used concepts from this class in many of my future HSCI classes - if you can take this class with Ryan, go for it!
He's the reason I got into the Environmental Health field as a career. Great teacher with a lasting impression, we need more profs like him!
Reposting my opinion because Allen reported the last one. My experience was the most difficult and disappointing part of the course.
one of my favourite profs!! our class did poorly overall on the midterm, but it definitely was more about people not showing up to class and not studying than his teaching style. he's a fantastic lecturer and is very engaging, I cannot recommend him enough
hsci profs are so crazy bc wdym ur telling me this guy loves air pollution
Worst HSCI class I have ever taken in my entire life! I have never performed as bad in a HSCI course as I did in this class. Despite my final grade being 75%, I received a C letter grade because he apparently "makes up his own grading scheme", which is absolutely ridiculous. Not to mention he wants everything written in "his own words".
love ryan allen!!!! would take him 100000 times again if i could. super caring and understanding. Go to class and you should be good for midterms and finals. Easily fav professor i've had at SFU.
Honestly one of my favourite professors so far at SFU. His lectures are pretty interesting and he genuinely cares about his students. He is a very fair grader and would recommend taking a class with him.
This was probably my favourite class I have taken at Sfu by far! Dr. Allen is an amazing prof and is really passionate about what he teaches. The grading scale is a bit unfair but if you show up to class and review the lectures you should be able to do well!
Dr. Allen was a pretty decent prof. The only reason I would NOT take him as a prof again is solely because of his grading scale. He uses this car speedometer analogy withs miles vs km to justify having a C+ start at 79.9%. And for reference, the midterm average was 64% which would be a D on his grading scale. :(
He is easily one of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures are super engaging and it is obvious he is passionate about what he teaches! He cares about his students and wants them to do well and learn. If you put in the effort to learn and engage with the content, your class with him will be rewarding! Highly recommend.
Dr. Allen has been one of the best professors I had so far. He is a passionate and amazing prof and his lectures are really engaging. I would strongly recommend to go to his in-class lectures rather than watching the lecture recordings. If you go to class, do the assignments, and study the lecture slides then you will get a good mark in his class
Prof Allen is one of the best profs in health science! Highly recommend taking with him, no regrets at all. He is super passionate about his lectures and you can see he really wants his students to succeed. Would definitely take a course with him again.
Dr. Ryan Allen has been an amazing professor. Had him for hsci 204 this spring and loved the course content. I would take another class with Dr. Allen again hes very passionate about his work and you can tell this in the way he lectures. Amazing health science prof and very knowledgable and helpful too!
Dr. Allen is a great professor, he is super respectful and he is really funny. He is a super cool professor and amazing lecturer. if you put in the time to understand and attend lecture, there is no way you wouldnt get an A+ in the course. I attended lecture and paid attention, which really helped understanding. the material is not hard but heavy
ryan allen the realest in the game
Ryan is the best. The class was a bit challenging if youre not a stats person but was interesting. Always there to help if you have any questions about content or assignments. The course itself is not an easy A but Ryan makes it worth the struggle.
Amazing professor. If you go to lectures and pay attention you will set for the class. Ask questions he is super approachable. The best professor at SFU
Ryan is one of the best profs I had in SFU. As a person who is not really good in SAS, he made the content easy to understand and describe each code what it does. I enjoy the weekly assignments and the question sets were fair. I recommend this class if you're interested in GIS and want to gain more skills as a researcher
Keep going Dr. Allen! Everything is great, focus on organization of topics during lecturr, and grading. :)
Super engaging lectures made it the only class I looked forward to attending at 830 in the morning. Exams are a breeze if you show up to lecture. Super chill and passionate
Ryan easily became one of my favourite profs. I took this as an elective and it became my favourite class, even at 8:30am. All you really need to do is go to class, engage and take notes and you'll do good. His tests are extremely fair and he explains content very well.
Dr. Allen is an amazing professor. I was scared because he has a very steep grading scale. However, it's very easy to do well in his class. You're only graded on the midterm, final, 2 assignments and weekly exercises so make sure you do well on those. Pay attention in lectures too and take lots of notes to do well.
Truly an amazing prof, no surprises on exams, weekly assignments which were only 2-3 questions based on the one three hour lecture we had. Explains things so nicely, overall easy course
I was given a B letter grade because he seems to have created his own grading system, which is completely absurd. Additionally, he expects everything to be written in "his own words".
It was his first time teaching this class and he was great! He responded to emails quickly and was eager to help. This class requires students to be proactive to ask for help and if enough effort is put in it can be an easy A. Attend class, ask help when needed for labs, and try and understand what the data means.
Ryan "GOAT" Allen is to me what others see in lebron. After that midterm, he is my sunshine my only sunshine.
Engaging course material, level of difficulty is reasonable lots of potential to get a very good grade
Top 5 guy of all time. Top 5 dude of all time
Ryan Allen is a great professor! I have had him for HSCI 204 (my favourite class in all of undergrad!) This course is difficult, but Ryan makes it worth taking!
Ryan is simply the best! He is a great lecturer, is passionate about the content, and wants his students to succeed. Don't pass up the opportunity to take a class with him!
Dr. Allen is one of the most caring and approachable professors you will ever encounter at SFU. The course is relatively easy if you do the labs yourself and ask for help when needed. It does demand work. There is a skills assessment, which is basically a final on what is learned throughout all labs. If you are doing the labs, you will be good.
