He is too good for this university. Mark my words, you woun't see him next year in U of M but in some better US university.
Agreed with the first comment. He won't be here next year. He's too good for this crappy city. Very clear and very caring about his students getting good marks. Go to class and you're set.

He is good as a new teacher but the final is terrible. He will be an excellent prof if he cares more about his students.
He explained things really well, and seemed to care that everyone understood the material. I didnt buy teh textbook and got an A+. You just need to come to class. Final was a bit of a surprise in that it didnt feature as much mathematical stuff as the midterm. but he did that to try to help.
He was a great teacher. Like everyone else said he helps you understand the materials. Reasonable marking. Instead of giving tests he gives assignments, which is a mark booster. All in all HE IS THE BEST PROF I HAVE EVER HAD!
Great Prof! Gives clear understanding of materials and is excited about the subject himself which makes it more enjoyable. He talks pretty fast, but you get used to it. Final was really a shock/surprise to everyone, but mid-term was fair. Text book helped with assignments and went along with lectures.
It's certainly not an easy course and he speaks VERY quickly...be sure not to miss any of the lectures or you'll be totally lost. That being said, He is an AWESOME prof: young, energetic, brilliant, goodlooking and very helpful. If you don't get it, ask him and stop mumbling amongst yourselves.
Very Good

He is very good professor, his teaching style is awesome. You dont even need the textbook. Too bad he is teaching only one part of the course. His assignments are very usefull for the tests.
Amazing porf. Did not even buy the text for his class. Very helpful. To bad that he won't be teaching Econ 1200 but got a promotion so take his other courses.
Great prof
AWESOME PROF! take his course! he talks really fast but you get used to it. that and his bad writing. but all you have to do is go to the classes, copy down what he writes on the board and the exams are EXACTLY what he writes down. in question form of course. great class. O hes not hot. i dunno how wrote that
Really good teacher and the tests were very fair.
the best professor i ever see!!
Awesome. Fun Guy. Obviously learned how to teach so well from Dr. J. Compton but could learn a thing or two about challenging student more from Dr. Tedds.
Although his lecture is very fast, he rocks! Take his class. He is a great prof.
I took his class last year. He is very clear. Strongly recommended.
He is a great teacher. He is the reason why I'm majoring in Economics. Teaches well and makes it easy to understand. Homeworks are easy marks and tells you to study them for tests. If you planning to take economics, he's a great teacher to get!!!
Very fast and very loud. He knows the course and doesn't make mistakes like other professors. He should come back but will probably be recruited by a better university.
he talks fast sometimes its hard to keep up, but he writes his notes on the board so its ok. assignments are easy, as long as u do it, he gives u full marks cuz all he cares about is u tried. non-cummulative and hes a fair marker.
Dr. Compton (along with his wife) are both amazing. He speaks loudly and clearly, notes are fairly comprehensive (consolidation with textbook material is minimal), and exams are borderline a joke. Took as an elective and helped to lighten course load. Extremely easy A/A+, especially if you are an Asper student who has taken FIN2200/ACC1110, etc.
Love him and his class! awesome! take all the classes with him if possible :D Everything on exam is in the lecture, just attend!
Good Prof, clear explanation. Attend to class and will be fine for test/final. DO NOT BUY the text, useless. His notes are sufficient for you to get there.
He is so amazing and makes economics really interesting. His exams are very fair and almost all right from the books but you do have to study to get a good grade. He is my favorite prof and u of m so far.
He is an amazing prof an definitely recommended! My favorite prof in my two years at u of m. Memorize his lecture notes and the exams will be very fair. He made economics very interesting and fun!
Very good prof, plain and simple. Interesting topic that is improved with his humour. He wants to see his students succeed and is very helpful outside of class.
Very easy to get along with keeps you entertained while teaching the topic at hand very clear voice and very animated in class. If you take economics take a class with him makes the learning experience much better
Great Prof. He made everything we learned in class super clear. Just wish that he taught more under-grad economics courses
awesome guy talks fast in class while teaching but you would definitely understand him. Always interested in knowing if you understand him or not class was a breeze through.
"should i have this 6th beer or not" (Ryan Compton) funniest teacher alive and a very good one too clear loud voice made my early mornings everyday.
Easily my best teacher this semester. Down to earth, but at the same time clearly knows his stuff. I just wish there were more profs like him.
just an absolute all around beauty
He motivated me to not drink the 6th beer. Unreal prof, take him if you get the chance, for any class. Cannot stress this enough, so good.
BEST PROF FOR MICRO!
best prof.
Best prof! So helpful, and hilarious. Relates the course to uni students so well!
Absolutely best prof ever. Hilarious, can relate to his students so well. His teaching is concise and to the point. Great examples make it easy to understand concepts. Cares about his students success. You might think he talks too fast, but he's just really energetic. Basically everything out of textbook. Midterm was cake. Final just a bit harder.
Excellent prof, he knows what he's talking about and always makes sure you understand before moving on. Ask questions if you need clarifications. Midterm is really informal but the final is worth 60% and is pretty nerve racking.
Makes me want to take more economics classes! Awesome prof. Clear and humorous lectures make classes memorable. Encourages students to participate and share opinions. Open to debate and discussion, always wants to help students learn and understand.
excellent references, very clear and energetic! wants students to do very well! He loves to teach and its good too see! best prof ever
His notes come from the textbook so highlight in the textbook and add his comments. Study from the textbook. Midterm easier than final. If you study a good amount you will do well in both. He is fun the listen to, likes to tell jokes.
I took micro and macro economics with him. He's very funny and speaks super clearly. I don't find that he spoke super quickly like other posts indicated. The only thing I didn't like with him is he stuck too closely to the power points and was too easy.
no soo good with helping and sticks too much to slide shows
He thinks he is interested. In fact, not at all. Horrible, he thinks he knows everything of econ. No notes online, rush to take notes. Hard final exam.
His exams were based off of his notes, had a lot of graphs though. He is a good guy and very willing to help. He explains things as many times as the students need. His exams are hard though. I still liked him because of how friendly and helpful he is.Overall, I would recommend him, very funny, helpful, and friendly. Great prof.
very very very hard midterm exam and final
Hard exams but easy to pass if you listen to lectures and read over the easy-to-understand book. Multiple-choice, which makes it easier. Lectures are not boring, sometimes he goes excited and goes very fast but you can just raise your hand and tell him and then he'll go back and go slowly.
Easy midterm. Hard final. One of the best economic profs but because his final was so hard people with other professors did better because other prof's exams were easier. However, he held my attention during class and I learned a lot.
very very cool guy.i suggests u to sit where theres no distraction (back) = A.make sure u understand his slides and examples he give!final is 60% btw.
Intelligent, funny and always asks how you are doing in class. Ensures that all concepts are understood. Loud and vocally clear.
He talks very quickly and goes through the material very fast. *His assignment reflect/mirror exam questions. Overall, the course was really interesting - I would definitely recommend this class.
Compton is funny and holds your attention, but his final is right out of left field. Mid-term was a good mix of math and hands-on info, but the final feels like 100 of his hypothetical questions asked in class, so take notes even if it seems ridiculous.
Hilarious prof that makes the class fun and enjoyable. Mid term was very fair but the final was 100 multiple choice questions that seemed like they came from no where. Nevertheless I would recommend this class for 2 reasons, 1 you will learn a lot about economics because of the way he teaches with relatable examples. The 2nd reason is his humor.
Very funny guy, but he has made my love for economics crash and burn.
He was hilarious at first, but in the last month of the term he seemed annoyed whenever someone asked him a question. I understand for him that this content is extremely easy for him since he has a PHD in economics; but the vast majority of the students have little economic background, so the content might not be as obvious.
Compton is very funny, but unfortunately isn't the greatest prof. He rushes through lectures, and doesn't explain key concepts as slowly and clearly as he should. I think its because the material is so basic for him that he just expects it to be easy for everyone else. Reading the textbook helped a lot.
Honestly, I was expecting much worse from this class after reading all the comments on this page. If you're looking for a walk in the park, this isn't the class to take. BUT, if you read the textbook, show up to class, and see him during office hours for help/clarification, its cake. PS, he's one of the funniest prof's. I'll never forget 2 Chainz!
Hilarious prof but you will need to read the textbook on your own to grasp concepts and complete the homework. He's upfront and it's easy to ask questions. However the one time I did he was rather grumpy and I avoided doing so thereafter.
He's funny and helpful. You have to attend the class to take notes and read the textbook before go to class.
I'd recommend him. Classes were enjoyable with humour about celebrities and current topics. Class pace was very fast but he tells you that at the start of the term. I didn't buy the text but wish I had, it would have been nice for when I couldn't keep up in class with notes/missed a class & for examples because examples of most formula use was rare
Great prof. Very funny, always tries his best to keep the class interesting. Only bad thing is that notes aren't posted online, but he always makes sure everyone is done copying the notes. I didn't buy the textbook, and was fine without it.
Fast paced speaker but you'll get used to it. Mostly runs from straight out of the textbook but brings up and focuses on important material. He will stop in the lecture if you are lost which is a bonus.
funny guy knows his stuff, but read the textbook and you can skip the class....
Compton is the kind of prof that makes you look forward to coming to his lectures. He's funny, approachable, and will clarify during a lecture if anything is unclear. I wish I could have him for every economics class I have.
good prof, and his sense of humor keeps the class interesting. constantly asks the class if they are following alongunderstanding the concepts so that he can go over them again if not. uses a lot of good examples when teaching. fair midtermfinal. would take another class w same prof
INSANELY FUNNY!! Tries hard to make sure you understand the material and will go over assignment questions in class if you are stuck on one and ask him. If you show up and take notes you don't need the textbook because the notes come directly from it. Uses hilarious examples and analogies that will make you laugh and are hard to forget!
Super funny guy, loves hockey and the other major north american professional sports leagues. If you enjoy economics and sports you will enjoy this class and learn a lot. However if you don't like sports I highly suggest not taking this course. Mid term and assignments were super easy however slammed the students with a crazy hard final.
Ryan made me loose my love of economics 5 minutes into class today. He also is a fat bald guy who can not pick potatoes. ;)
Compton is by far the funniest prof I have ever had. The lectures felt more like stand-up comedy; kind of made it hard to learn economics though.
Prof. Compton is definitely an awesome professor, and the class was great too! As long as you do the readings and go to the lectures, you'll be just fine. As for him, he's super funny, friendly, and always there to lend a hand. Very passionate about his field - his love for economics is matched only by his unquenchable thirst for Coca-Cola.
Compton is a great professor that really gets the students involved to make the lectures more enjoyable. Makes sure everyone understands the topic before moving on and has no trouble reviewing anything that anyone might not get. My favorite professor I have had, it was a pleasure taking his class and he really got me to enjoy economics.
This class is fairly easy I passed without reading the textbook. DO all the homeworks and DON'T miss lectures, you will be fine. Prof are nice and know his stuff well. However, one small thing is that he use his phone in the lecture couple times and he was late for few minutes every lecture. As an engineering student,it is a little annoying to me
Compton actually made economics enjoyable. He added a lot of humour to his lectures, which allowed for you to actually pay attention and learn the material. If you don't attend class you probably will not pass because he does not post the lecture slides online. Also, the midterm and final were fairly straight forward.
Awesome prof! If you have a choice take your class with him, he makes a very dry Econ course interesting and funny! Exams and assignments are very fair if you understand the material
Love this guy - very clear and concise, and his commentary makes econ fun to learn
Absolutely love Dr. Compton's classes. I have taken two classes with him and I plan on taking more out of pure interest and enjoyment to listen to him teach. Uses humour everyday, the only thing is he doesn't post the class notes but always makes coming to class enjoyable. Definitely take his class if you ever get the option, you won't regret it!
Does not post lecture notes online. You have to be scribbling down slides instead of listening to his explanations 99% of the class. He also does not post graphs in his class notes, but draws them on the board in an unclear, messy, and unhelpful way. Pertinent, useful information is missing because he spends class time making dad jokes.
Great Prof!! He is fun, clear, and helpful if you go to see him in his office hours, and makes going to class not so bad. He doesn't give out notes, so going to class is mandatory but its really not that bad. I would definitely take a course with him again!!
Great prof, and lecture notes are clear and all you need. You MUST go to class or he wont be very helpful or really tell you anything if you email him about something that he discussed and you missed. Overall good and hilarious prof but you have to attend class
Great Prof, brings humour into his lectures. 5 assignments worth 10 %, 1 midterm worth 30 %, final worth 60 %. Don't need the textbook, everything he tests on he has in his own slides. Highly recommend.
Took this course over the summer, some sports background needed. One of the best profs at U of M. Tells you what you need to know for the exams and gives lots of practice questions to check understanding; course material wasn't too tough. Worth going to lectures, Compton is really enthusiastic when teaching; makes going to class enjoyable!
Amazing prof and hilarious also. Gives lots of examples that teens can relate to, and is happy to answer any questions you have. Would definitely take more classes with him.
I looked forward to going to his lectures, his loud voice always has a way of waking you up. All his explanations are simple and easy to follow, and he doesn't post slides, so don't skip class.
AWESOME Prof! He is a hilarious, animated, knowledgeable, approachable prof. I was thoroughly engrossed in lectures. He teaches really well. He started giving slides' notes recently, which are helpful for extra note-taking. Learning econs was so much fun in his class!
This is probably one of my favourite profs ever! He states the material very clearly and knows what he's talking about. He has a great personality and makes the class super fun and easy.
An Ok Professor. A lot of students like him which means his classes are always full. A little bit unprofessional and acts like a teenager at times but overall quite intelligent. One midterm and final with average difficulty. Not the end of the world if you get this professor but there are better ones out there for economics and worse ones too.
Ryan Compton is a great prof. Really funny and intuitive, always uses modern examples to try and relate to economic principles. His dad jokes are hilarious and he posts the notes online. However, go to his class as what he says in class is useful information towards the midterm exam and final exam.
Engaging lectures, but his flamboyant humour wasn't really my style. Encourages questions and will follow up on e-mails, but rarely prompts between slides. He is very deprecating, which is funny if you're not the person he's making fun of, and offensive if you are. Great guy if he's in a good mood, intimidating if he's not. I'd recommend overall.
Entertaining professor. Lots of challenging and dry material in the course though. Tests/exams more difficult than led to believe. Make sure to focus on your notes and the assignment problems!
Great prof. Gives you lots of time to finish your homework. Makes the lectures more interesting by giving examples for concepts involving things students can relate to (sports/pop culture). Very funny. Posts notes online but you should still attend class. All in all, I highly recommend Professor Compton.
Compton is a funny prof and he answer questions on the assignments without any problem. His exams are fair, even though he asked some specific questions that he didn't go over. I didn't like his class because it was very superficial he didnt expand much on the content. I really recommend that you read the book because with the class its not enough
Prof Compton was an incredible prompter. Most people don't recognize how important prompting is in class and Prof Compton is unquestionably a master of prompting. If there is one thing I took away from this class it is what a phenomenal prompter he is.
He is really engaging and funny. If learning through humour is your style- he is your man. He also gives you enough time to finish your assignments. Don't depend on studying with just the slides because it's not enough. Read the textbook if you don't understand something.
He's very good at communicating the dry material from this class through humor and thorough explanations. Homeworks are easy and are very useful for exams. The midterm was fairly simple but I found the final had some tricky questions that maybe weren't covered in class. He posts all his notes online but the class is entertaining to attend.
Ryan made this course super easy to understand, often I found that just studying the slide notes was enough. There was only 2 or 3 chapters I had to delve into the textbook for. If you've taken calculus or are just really strong with algebra, graphs and numbers I would say this course is really easy to do well in.
Great prof and also really funny. He gives online notes but you still need the textbook if you want to get a good grade. The only thing I didn't like was the grade distribution (final exam was worth 60% of final grade). Overall, Compton is a really good prof and I recommend you take econ with him.
Great at explaining and always takes lots of questions from the class
Funny but lectures weren't enough to learn from. He usually would talk too much that he'd skip over so many things. With a class of 250+ students, no one could read nor understand his notes on the board, it was disorganized. Plus, he was very unapproachable outside of class (like he's annoyed you're asking a question).Grade distribution sucks too.
Great prof. Funny, engaging, easy to understand. Missing class is not a big issue, although I recommend going as often as possible as he does provide useful information. Approachable as far as questions are concerned. Weighting is a little scary; (10% homework, 30% mid-term, 60% final) so be prepared for all of these things. Highly recommend him.
Overall a good prof, his exams are fair. I recommend going to lectures because he's hilarious and the humour sometimes makes remembering certain concepts easier. He goes over any homework questions during lectures which is helpful. However, he can sometimes seem annoyed if you ask him a question at the end of class.
Very helpful in person and via email. Always willing to answer questions and explain things differently. Uses humour well, and frequently. Lectures are genuinely enjoyable. All around great prof and person.
Meehoohoo, what a guy! So funny, I found the material difficult but it made it all that much better because he was a nice looking man.
He is a great prof! He posts the slides online but it is important to go to class cause he gives great examples and makes everything easy to understand. He's a funny guy and keeps students interested the whole class. Exams are relatively easy. He goes over the online homework in class which is very easy and will boost your mark.
This was an online class so most of the teaching was done through the online textbook and through lyryx. The final exam was difficult. Studying for this class was a pain since the textbook was too long to review effectively, so I had to go through it and retype most of the textbook into a digestible bites.
Hello econ students. Compton is hilarious and he is likely reading this review infront of his new econ class. Good prof uses real-world examples and incorporates humor. Assignments and midterm are easy and the final was a bit of a curve ball. oh yea and one more thing, he is really good at prompting now.
Yo Compton hopefully this makes it on screen for your first lecture of 2018. Really good prof.. If you made it into his Econ 1010 you lucked out. Really funny, good explanations, fair grading and helpful to students one on one!
Amazing professor. Wish he would go ahead and teach asper courses aswell!
Super funny professor. Covers all the material very well and gives detailed explanations and good examples when necessary. He does cover lots of material, and although the concepts are not difficult, you will have to study.
Great teacher. Notes every class, 2 exams for the semester plus a group project. Extra credit is offered. Lets just say you really don't have to do a lot of work to receive a good grade.
Great guy, not just a great teacher for me
Hilarious guy but his teaching is a little bit unspecific. Need a lot of reading in order to understand the material
Great guy and very good teacher overall. Boils concepts down to simple but effective examples to help students understand. Fair exams and online homework is helpful. Can be a bit abrasive when answering questions in class if it's something he thinks you should already know, so pay close attention to lectures.
He's a really funny prof and makes his lectures entertaining, but be sure to pay close attention because he goes fast and covers a lot of material. He gives good examples in class and tries to simplify the material. The exams seem very unlike the lecture material, so be prepared!
One of my favorite profs at the UofM. Very funny, creates somewhat enjoyable lectures, involves students, and helps you outside of class. Class attendance is mandatory if you want an A. He is also available to help outside of class time. Overall really enjoyed his course!
compton is not accessible outside of class. he has good lectures that are relatable and easy to follow. he is a fair prof that teaches what we need to know, although he is almost too smart to be teaching first year classes, because he expects students to know what he's talking about.
Just took the summer course with him and he was funny, made sure to try use examples that the students would know. Show up to class, pay attention and ask questions, you will do just great. The reading is a good way to supplement if you don't fully understand, but for the most part he does a good job! Would certainly take classes with him again.
Passionate, funny, easy to understand. Very easy midterm and assignments. Mostly easy final.
Makes lectures interesting and therefor easier to follow. Knows his stuff without hesitation and gives thorough explanations. Would recomend going to class because there are times he skips over sections of the slides that are posted online. Midterms, finals and workload is all average and fair. Would most certainly take another class with him again
he's a decent prof but better than the most.
Super hilarious. Homeworks are helpful. Exams are worth too much (60% final). Loves to joke around about family and provides good real life examples.
talk too fast ,and little information on the PowerPoint
Posts slides however they dont contain much so its best to go to class as he adds important info, plus hes hilarious. Tests are fair and based off notes and practice questions, so study those! Would be useful to know sports especially hockey.
Compton is amazing. In his own words, Econ 1010 is sometimes boring so he needs to find ways to make it interesting and he DOES! He is so funny, honestly the only reason I was excited to go to school. His midterm was hard but the final was easy and gave 5 easy bonus points related to a YouTube video. He understands students feelings so well. A gem.
Great Prof.
You're lucky if ur in his class, this mans a goat. He knows all good music so he's lit. My guy told us about love it by kanye and lil pump the day it came out. HE KNOWS THE COURSE MATERIAL TOO MANS REALLY GOOD AT IT. PAY ATTENTION AND YOU'LL BE FINE.
Funny and gives a ton of examples but he talks too fast. In order to do well, you have to read the textbook before or after lectures because his notes/ lectures are not enough. Some mightve found that the midterm was harder than the final because we only had 40 mins to do the midterm. Make sure to do all the assignments!
Yo he the goat, gem, and a real beauty. Nothing more you can ask for in a prof. Beyond lucky if you by chance make it into one of his classes. Funniest guy, cares about his students and you'll actually enjoy going to his lectures. DON'T SKIP THIS CLASS, you can and will still get a great grade but you'll be missing out on the best prof at this uni.
Good professor. Take the ECON 1020 get B+ and ECON 1010 B.
All around good teacher. Super funny and up to date with pop culture. If he likes your class, he'll make the final super easy. Mid term was difficult but doable, Final was easy and carried my grade as the final and mid term consist of 90% of your grade. He puts all the slides online and you just need to study those to get a good grade.
Incredible prof. Extremely knowledgeable and experienced with economics. Very with the times and uses engaging material to keep students interested. Literally makes references to Migos and fortnite LOL
Incredible prof. Super engaging lectures that make you feel excited about going to classes. Midterm was a little tough but final was much better. If you go to the classes and study what's on the slides it's not hard to get a good grade.
Compton is a great prof. If you choose to attend classes he really tries to relate to the class by giving good examples and is particularly humorous. He also truly cares about his students.
He's pretty hilarious and gives very relatable examples for the course content. Is very accessible outside of class and willing to help you if you need it (responds to emails quickly and is willing to meet with you). Very clear with describing course content, and assignments are generally straightforward. Would take another course with him for sure
Dr. if you're reading this, keep doing what you do.
Very good professor, willing to help students, but you need to have some knowledge of North American sports
Hes an awesome prof. As long as you apply yourself and try youll do well. He gives awesome examples that help you remember and hes great at keeping the class engaged. If you have questions he always sets out time at the start of class to go over any questions either from the homework or lectures. I would highly recommend him!!
Compton's ECON 1020 course makes the earlier stages of Asper less stressful. This is the kind of professor you want for every course. He is not out to get you like most profs, he teaches you exactly what you NEED to know, and makes it interesting so that you WANT to study and do well. His wife is tougher than he is, avoid taking ECON with her.
Compton is a bro but don't ask stupid questions or he'll get grumpy. Overall a good prof and an easy course but put in the hours to do the practice questions and read the textbook to do well - don't just rely on the slides. Easy A if you have some background in Economics.
Tries really hard to keep students engaged with the class. Tells you exactly what you need to study and what to skip. Extremely approachable both in and out of class. Be respectful and ask questions and the class is a cake walk.
Great Professor in department of Economics in University of Manitoba, you won't be regretful if you take his course! He is accommodating if you need help. Convertible Prof, if you take his course, you should be good at communicating and creative, you would be more creative and knowledgeable after course!
Best Prof so far in the faculty. Amazing lectures, he is hilarious and he doesn't mind going over and over until you understand the paper. No textbooks, just daily papers and quizzes but still so good. Interesting topics/ papers also. Take this course!
Second time having professor Compton and he's great. Straight-forward lectures. Lots of reading though, but manageable if you stay ahead of the course. Always available for questions or concerns. Do not get on his bad side as he doesn't like to waste time. Stay focused and do the readings and you're good!
Compton feels more like a Bro than a professor, his tests are on exactly what was in the lecture slides. This class feels more like a sports podcast than a econ lecture, he's hilarious and can give you the economic insight into current events which helps you understand the material. On top of being a good instructor he's very approachable.
Professor Compton is straight forward, clear and there is no BS when it comes to his classes. He is also very funny. There will never be a misunderstanding about what expectations are in his class.
Compton fells more like an equal than a professor. He's down to earth and a good teacher. He lets you know exactly what will be on the exams so their are no surprises. In sports econ, it felt more like talking sports with your friends rather than a university lecture.
Compton is a bro-y prof who keeps things entertaining. His tests are straightforward, and engaging with the material is key. unstuck study was a big help for prep alongside the textbook.
He's a great prof! attend classes, not compulsory though, but it helps. Definitely reccomend
best teacher i've ever had
He is best of the best!
Dr. Compton is the best prof I've ever had. Was very straightforward with information and was clear with instructions and test information. Homework questions related to the textbook were on the tests and similar, so studying that is helpful. He is also very funny. Can't wait to take ECON2520 with him. Take this class with him, he won't disappoint.
