he's a good guy, and he tries, but he scares alot of kids away with alot of pop quizzes with hard specific questions. you probably won't fail the class, even if you think you are, but it's alot of work. he has a dress code and is pretty intimidating, but if you talk to him, he's nice and willing to try and help
Good teaching style but difficult requirements. The most stressful class I have ever taken.
Great guy but probably one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. Really big on Emperor Augustus. If you dont like ancient history...dont take this class. Lots of writing. Quizes every week vocab, reading etc.
Did NOT enjoy the class. He was difficult as a teacher and wasn't very helpful. He would ask detailed questions and even if no one knew he would never give the answer which didn't help at all. Most people in the class were making low grades. He didn't clarify and his expectations were too high. He also was a bit pompous and cocky. Not recommended.
Crisp is a great guy when you get to know him outside of class but he is way hard. I liked his class though cause you learned more from because you had to meet high expectations. If you are not willing to work, don't take him, but if you want to learn, go ahead. It's not to hard when you get into the swing of his class.
This teacher wants you to think and not just expect an answer. He wants you to really look at your materials. However you should be willing to ask questions if you need help. If you show him that you are trying he will help you out. He seems a little impersonable but he truly does care about teaching and he will help if you ask.
This was such a difficult class and to be honest I didn't find the teacher very helpful - he was difficult to talk to and talked down to students, making it very intimidating to ask questions or even answer them for fear of being wrong.
HIST 300 was pretty hard. There are assignments that take hours of work that are only worth 15 points! There is always a lot of homework and he expects you to understand it and do it. He does wants you to learn and grow, though.
Brother Crisp is really helpful. His class is hard, but he tries to help his students as much as he can. Here is the secret to his class. He gives an outline for his assignments, and if you follow them exactly, you will get a better grade. His quizzes are pretty hard. Just talk to him if you are having problems, and he will help you.
Dr. Crisp is a very intelligent man, who loves his history. He expects a lot of his students, and gives some tough tests, but the materials are all covered in class. He actually wants his students to understand history. If you have a desire to learn world history, rather than just memorize dates, take his class, and you will be happy.
Crisp assigned a shi'ite load of homework. It's finals week and I have an A in the class. After taking 1/3 of his final (worth 400 points) I'm going to count my blessing to walk away with a C. His tests will take you out at the knees . If you're a nerd with no life-take him. His class will fill your life with writing and studying. Yikes.
he's really hard but everything he does, assignments, maps, quizes he makes you have are all there to guide you on the final, which is open book and open notes. All you need to do is put forth effort and not expect to coast through the class. And he's not that intimidating once you actually talk to him.
Dr. Crisp is very dedicated to history, he is also dedicated to killing you with work. His Hist 300 class was just too broad and heavy. I had to make a choice either possibly pass his class, most likely fail, and fail all my other classes or drop his class and pass the others. I really liked him but just didn't have the time to spend on his hmwk
DO NOT TAKE HIST 300 FROM BRO. CRISP! I just wanted to make that part clear. He's a nice guy, but we all know what happens when a teacher tries to cram too much into one semester. IF we pass the class, we cannot help but forget 95% of what we spent so much time learning. He believes the average student should get a C. Goodbye GPA!
Dr. Crisp is very into history. History 300 is supposed to be challenging, that's the point. He does a very good job at teaching grammar and how to write history. He requires a lot of work, but if you do it you'll do fine. I never felt overwhelmed, as long as I kept up. He grades with a curve and helps you whenever you ask. Good Teacher.
Dr. Crisp requires a lot of reading for his Hist 201 class, but as long as you do the assignments and keep up on the reading you'll get a good grade. He gave oodles of extra credit and was available whenever needed. He gets a bad rap because he assigns a lot of work, but it's really not too hard. Overall, he's a good teacher. I learned a ton!
NOT an enjoyable class.
Arrogant professor. Taking 101 from him now. His assignments are impossible unless you can somehow read his mind. I am a very good student and am struggling. He is off in his own world. Do NOT take any classes from him.
Quizzes over daily reading assignments, a presentation in class, one 400-500 word essay per week... No tests. If you're taking history because you love it, but don't need a hectic class, take this class.
Bro. Crisp may come off as stuck up but the man does know his stuff. He had long quizzes for every chapter we read but they were open book so its ok! He taught with enthusiasm and would add some funny remarks. He requires one presentation but it was so easy. Highly recommend.
I enjoyed his classes but he does give a lot of work to do. Very long readings and but the quizzes were open book. His outlining assignments are KILLER but do the assignments and you'll be fine.
Excellent teacher. Lots of homework but not overwhelming. All homework is relevant. Is excited about the subject and engages well with the students.
good scholar, but not a great teacher. his reading is great even though that's a lot. you can definitely learn a lot if you are tugh enough, because he treats students like they are idiots and has tons of busy work
I will say I learned from his class and he is a knowledgeable teacher. I don't think he cared that much for me as an individual though, but maybe that is just his personality.
I love his class, I felt it was a good workload. He is willing to work with the person.
He would make an awesome advanced english instructor. He was helpful. His assignments were easy to understand, except for one. It was REALLY hard! Overall, he's nice guy & you can tell that he honestly wants us to understand what he is teaching. We didn't really focus on history though. The class was more focused on how to write english papers.
NOTE: Dr. Crisp's class is HARD. But, every bit of work is worth it. I'm not going to lie, I spent HOURS (20ish) every week on homework. But, I learned so much. And, if you are willing to go to his office and talk, he will help you in whatever way is necessary. He's a VERY, VERY nice man. He's super knowledgable. Definitely knows his history.
He is very smart. There are daily quizzes in the class. Most of them are fairly simple. There are a few HARD assignments, but just plan ahead and you'll be fine. He makes a point to learn your names and will answer any questions.
He is hard. The tests are extreamly hard. You do have quizes everyday. I did not learn alot in his class. you will also read Carnage and Culture and take quizes on that they are very opinionated and the connections you make usually are not what he is looking for I dont recommend this class. It may be easier online.
He is the worst teacher I have ever had!!! If you value you're life at all do not take his class! Class time is wast of time because he doesn't teach anything that will be on the test. He just goes over the quizzes and then lectures on about things that are interesting but irrevalant to our learning. He is really bad at explaining.
He is really smart, and what he taught this semester was really interesting. There is alot of work required and although at sometimes it just seems like busy work, it really helps to remember the material that is being tested on
Dr. Crisp is great. Yes, you have to work hard; welcome to college. The homework load is moderate, and it's all relevant. The tests are all online, open-book open-notes, so there's really nothing to complain about on that field. He is extremely helpful if you just ask. My only complaint is that he spends a lot of class time on review.
Would take this course over in a heartbeat!! Keep good notes because all tests and quizes are open book, open note! Attendance is not mandatory but you get up to 20 points a day when you attend.
Homework is relevant and interesting. Gets a bad wrap but he is a very good teacher
Dr. Crisp is a very good teacher. You do have to put a fair bit of effort into the class, but like somebody mentioned earlier - welcome to college! All of his quizzes come directly from material that he assigns, so everything feels relevant. This is a great class for aspiring history majors to see if they really want to be historians or not.
The first couple weeks i thought that his class might kill me. After realizing that i was just going to have to work a little harder i did fine. Our final was a large group paper that could either raise your grade way up or cause you to fail. My group backed out last minute and he was very understanding about it. all around. great teacher!
He knows his content but cannot teach the students. He cannot relate to them, and it is either his way or no way.
Bro Crisp is an interesting teacher. He assigns the biggest amount of busywork I have ever had to do. The topics he goes over are usually interesting, but this class is basically meant to get you burnt out of history. It does just that. Expect hours and hours of homework everyday. I can also see how he might be hard to get along with.
Dr. Crisp is an exceptionally hard teacher. He knows what he is talking about, but demands a lot from his students. His final exam always determines your final grade, and can kill you even if you do well in class, so keep that in mind. He expects lots of hard work from his students, especially upper-division.
I had Crisp for 101 and took him for 201 on purpose. He expects a lot out of his students, but his objectives are very clear, and if you just put in the effort there is no reason not to do well in his class. He's a lot more about effort than anything else. He knows what he's talking about and just expects you to do it his way. It's a lot of work.
I LOVED Brother Crisp! He has a very funny sense of humor if you look for it and he's really good at giving his classes structure. He makes you work but it's all doable. If I can pass his class I think anyone can :)
I hated this class, and I'm not sure how much of it was me and how much was him. If you do not LOVE history, do not take 101 from him. He is very unclear about his expectations and struck me as arrogant. He clearly knows what he's talking about, but he doesn't communicate it very well. Some people love him, but it didn't work for me at all.
This guy makes you spend 4 hours a day studying for his class. Study every tiny little location, sequence of events & rulers, authors and their publications, and latin terms. You'll never get more homework than you will in this class, and he's not the most understanding person.
Great teacher - knows his stuff! For those who say he is difficult or ?arrogant? have obviously not attended any other University ? we?re not in high school anymore people. Get over it.
Many people will rate him as really difficult and not very kind. I will agree that he is not the most friendly however his purpose is to prepare you fort he real world not be some easy teacher to get you through like in highschool. If you cannot handle him. good luck getting any higher degrees of education.
At first he comes off as being harsh, but he is actually a really funny guy. He doesn't tolerate stupidity or sloppy work. His classes are not easy but you will learn tons in his classes. I had to talk him him after class and through email a few times and he was always there to help. I hear his offic is great. He really cares about his students too
I didnt think I liked ancient history until this class. He made it interesting and knows a TON! He's really funny and friendly if you are light-hearted. The only thing that I didn't like was how much getting an A depended on the final. In previous years, he's given optional projects but didnt offer those and it was scary! Study is mandatory!
If you really want to take this class be prepared to spend your every waking moment doing his homework. I still can't remember half of what we learned since we covered so much. I was able to get an A in this class through extreme dedication, tears, yelling at the computer, and giving up all my free time. Review homework answers and bring to class.
Put simply, this class is for big kids. Plenty of homework and quizzes but they really help you to grasp the bigger picture. He challenges your knowledge with the purpose to prepare you for the future. Learning how to write a research paper was an invaluable skill I learned in his class. His rough exterior is just to scare off lazy students...
He is a really good teacher just be prepared to work. There is a lot of homework and it does take a lot of time but it is worth it. I really liked him an recommend him to anybody that wants to learn a lot. Very smart guy. Has a rough exterior but really isn't that rough.
Excellent teacher. Not the class for the lazy student. Carnage and Culture is well-written but can be challenging. He knows his stuff. It is a lot of WORK but you get graded more on effort than quality. Its easy if you're willing to put in the time. Totally recommend this teacher if you want to learn. One of the best teachers on campus.
Dr. Crisp made our History 101 class his backwater class. Because he had other more "important" classes, we received a lot less instruction or help. With "by schedule only" office hours (that were usually already full with who knows what) out of class help was difficult to receive. Not recommended but unfortunately the only Intro to History teacher
I really struggled in this class. I feel like Brother Crisp expected more than what should be required in a 100 level class. Be prepared to do hours upon hours of homework. Brother Crisp is very knowledgable, but the material is hard to understand and boring.
A nice enough guy, but the final paper gave me about three nervous breakdowns. If you have bad grammar or spelling, you will fail this class.
"Dr" Crisp was extremely unfair and his grading system is very unjust. You will do a lot of busy work. You will certainly learn a lot, but it won't be fun.
Dr Crisp will make you work. I took 101 from him and that is why I took 300 from him. It was a small class, so if I had any questions, it was convenient to ask them. He can be intimidating, but if you get to know him, he is a way nice guy. Very knowledgeable.
Dr. Crisp definitely knows his stuff. However, his class requires you to really love history and to work hard. If you don't, you will absolutely hate this class. When people express absolute dislike for him personally, I feel like it's more out of a frustration towards history rather than an actual dislike of the teacher.
This class was pretty hard and very demanding but it was just because of the type of class it was. Dr. Crisp was always super willing to help and very knowledgeable about History. I think he is a very good professor and although at times the work is hard or gets monotonous, if you do it you will learn so much!
Dr. Crisp is a firm but fair teacher. I have learned a lot from this class but I have had to put in a lot of hard work and effort to do so. Don't take this class lightly it can be enjoyable and He is a great teacher but this is not a class you can just skate by in. I appreciated this class and I'm grateful for the things I learned.
I failed the class because I failed my last essay. Dr. Crisp is a nice guy and very smart. He will answer your questions with great clarity. The main problem I as well as everyone had was he gives out TONS of reading and quizzes you on the SMALLEST little details. I am not exaggerating here. Tests are once every 2 weeks and quizzes every week.
Dr. Crisp is intimidating at first, but if you make an effort to enjoy the material and sincerely engage the class, you'll discover that he's a very nice and helpful professor. Don't slack off though, there's a lot of reading and it's not for the faint of heart. He'll treat you like an adult and expect you to act like one.
Doesn't know how to teach. And he is very very particular and likes to stroke his own ego. Sadly he is the only one who teaches Intro to History and he runs it like everyone is going to be a research historian.
Definitely do the readings, there are quizzes every day over the readings and they are very detailed. Need to do the work in order to pass the class.
Bad. He does not teach. He has you do quizzes on the readings and then discuss things in groups. If there is any form of lecture, it lasts 10 minutes tops and is completely different from what you read in the homework. Confusing, quizzes on obscure stuff, hard teacher.
Extremely difficult class but if you go in with a good attitude and work hard you can get an A. He is always willing to help and does have a dry sense of humor so figure that out and class can be a lot of fun.
He makes fun of students who ask questions he thinks are obvious, gives assignments without any clarity and then punishes students for even small errors. Does not have grades online and only occasionally shows you your grade. He does know his stuff though, and if you do the reading, and take detailed notes you will learn a lot.
The entire class is taking Clicker quizes and then "discussing" questions he puts up on the projector with your group. Once in a while he will make you take notes on someone elses lecture. All he really knows how to do is push play and go from slide to slide. Read everything, still got a B. Awful teacher. Try your best to NEVER take him.
Be prepared to spend every waking minute of your time studying humongous amounts of materials that you're guaranteed to never remember or ever use again outside of HIST 101. The amount of work he gives out far exceeds the value of a 100 level class. Be prepared for a hellish semester if you take him. Worst professor I've ever had.
He teaches the course like it's upper-division, which means you'll spend most of your time reading, taking notes, or having little time for other courses. Clicker quizzes are required, and he spends little to no time in actual lecture. 95% of what you learn are from text and you NEED to stay on top of things. He's a BIG stickler on detail.
Unless you like to waste countless hours doing sentence diagrams of the Old Testament, don't waste your time in this class. There is a reason why the others fill up first and his only has 10 - Don't take his History 300! You will fail his class unless you understand extremely complex sentence diagrams!
Bro. Crisp is probably one of the most misunderstood teachers in the history department. I really enjoyed his class. It was a lot of work, and some of the quiz questions very rather difficult. It is NOT impossible to get an A. It is one of the only classes that I have taken so far where I feel like I have actually learned something useful. Take him!
Dr. Crisp is something else. He does not teach well. Honestly the only good thing about him is if you are sick he will excuse you. Will not answer your questions without sounding very condescending. If you can avoid the Doctor.
he is very tough. he will make you feel stupid if you ask a question that he finds stupid. he does not teach all the learning is in the work not him he just a puppet masters.
he is very tough. he will make you feel stupid if you ask a question that he finds stupid. he does not teach all the learning is in the work not him
He keeps getting sidetracked one his teaching. One moment we'll be discussing about the organization of roman legions in the late Roman empire, the next we'll be talking about why reading is important for historians. We never stick to one subject at a time and things keep switching. It's very hard to follow because there's no connection whatsoever.
If you hate the I-Clicker, avoid this teacher like the plague.
Dr. Crisp is the worst professor ever. His curriculum is all over the place and very confusing. He is always available, but frankly he is frightening and condescending. He gives long assignments that are pointless and tedious. I would avoid this professor at all costs. Also his area of focus is MedievalAncient, so good luck!
Dr. Crisp is an amazing facilitator. He is intimidating but helpful if you ask the right questions. Remember this is a college course for one of the most misunderstood and misrepresented subject on the campus. It will be different then you thought, and he helps you realize that fact. Don't shoot the messenger! Just work hard and earn your reward!
Very tough class, but also the most rewarding I have taken so far. Very good teacher, I learned an insane amount. I-Clicker quizzes daily. This class is dependent on how WILLING you are to teach yourself and put in the hours. He is -not- intimidating. Very intelligent and very skilled at teaching you what is necessary. Loved the class, very hard.
I enjoyed Dr. Crisps class. His class is not easy but if you put in the effort you can come out with a good grade. This class is a good class to learn more about history as a profession.
I really enjoyed Dr. crisps classes. His classes are college level and I love it. You do read a lot but that is history. History is learning about the past and with that comes a lot of reading. If you are not into that you might want to switch your major. I would definitely recommend taking classes from him. Do your best and it will be worth it.
Not going to lie, I have mixed feelings about Dr. Crisp. On one hand, he fulfils exactly what should be expected of a professional. On the other hand, he is not very helpful or nice, necessarily. He will fulfil his responsibilities exactly, but has extremely high student expectations. KNOW the syllabus -its basically the bible for his classes.
expect 7 hours of homework for every day in class. tests are more about what came first rather than practicality. puts too much information for a one semester class. if it was broken up into more classes than it would be okay. He does not teach you, you read his online book and take tests on it everyday. This is coming from a history Major.
Doesn't do anything I-Learn. Clicker quizzes every day in class, but its guess what hes thinking, not how much or how well you read. Crazy amounts of reading. DO NOT TAKE unless you are a million percent sure that you are going to be a history major. He uses scare tactics. Doesn't even seem to like teaching. Jokingly, its like he hates your life:)
Yes this class was difficult, but as I learned a huge amount. Doctor Crisp is a very misunderstood teacher. His classes are not easy, but if you put in the effort you will learn a ton. Doctor Crisp is also one of the most intellectual teachers I've ever had. He really is a great teacher! Work hard, and you will not regret it.
He is a brilliant teacher. I really loved his class. He is hilarious and gives good lectures. The only problem is you don't know what your grade is. He doesn't post your grades on any assignments so you have no idea how your doing in his class. He gives no feedback or suggestions for improvement.
Your going to have to read. Deal with it or change your major. If you have questions, go talk with him one-on-one, he is very helpful. Don't ask him stupid questions, look for the answer yourself first. Read the syllabus. Read assignment and questions world for word. Don't complain about his policies. Requires effort. You'll learn a lot from him.
This was bar none the worst History class I have ever taken. We'd be given something to read for homework, and then THE ENTIRE CLASS would be spent just going through a quiz over the reading, with 90% of the questions being on insignificant details (which probably weren't on test wouldn't ya know) If you can take a different teacher... do it
I took Brother Crisp's FDWORLD101 class and it was the worst class that I have ever taken. He gives anywhere from 15-60 page reading packets with quite large assignments attached to them at times. The entire class period is testing you on minute (small) details of the readings that don't pertain to anything. 101 classes should not be this hard!!!!!
Extremely hard to be successful in his class. Readings are long, and even if you take notes on everything, there is surely something you missed. Every day the class is an I-clicker quiz, and you have only 30 seconds for each tough question he asks. He is very smart, and knows it, which is annoying. You do not learn in this class, you play the game.
Lots of group discussion. Can't use technology. Lots of i-clicker. Lectures a lot.
This has been honestly the worst class I have ever taken. DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE FROM CRISP. YOU WILL REGRET IT, TRUST ME. If he is the only teacher available wait till next semester and take the class from someone else. All you do is read a ton of old boring texts (most of which don't make sense) and take I-Clicker quizzes on what you read about.
This guy is nuts. He expects WAY, WAY too much from a fricken 101 class. He has you read A LOT. And don't expect it to be a good read. Expect 2 hour assignments due every class day. When he hands back your long papers, he literally only puts a mark through random stuff (You don't learn from what you did wrong). DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM.
Run, Run for you life. Just a ditto to what everyone else has said. Dont do it. Dont take this class from Crisp.
I loved this class. It was one of my favorite classes ever. HOWEVER, I DO enjoy history a lot more than most people do. Br. Crisp's classes make you smarter, better, and empowered with history skills, but only if you actually REALLY like history. You can get through skimming the readings IF you're interested enough, but if not, take someone else.
A reading & quiz for everyday, a paper or two due every week. I printed out every paper and have six inches worth. Two papers that if you don't do you fail. This class was so hard but I loved everything we covered, Bro Crisp taught me so much. If you want to learn take it, if you just want the credit find someone else. I also didnt do every assignm
The people on here that are crying about how hard his class either didn't read the syllabus or take it seriously. He says at the beginning that it's a lot harder than a typical 101 class. If you show up to class ready and willing to learn and read the and do your best, you'll be good. If you don't like history or want an easy A, you'll be miserable
Dr. Crisp is the worst teacher I've ever had in my entire life. I love history and the idea of the study of history, but Dr. Crisp has nearly made me hate it entirely. This man should not be a teacher. All he does is assign obscene amounts of reading and then spend the entire class period giving a clicker quiz where you have to read his mind.
There was way too much reading for a 101 class. You read an assignment, and then take a super hard quiz on it in almost every class period. There are also three essays you must right on the three course themes as well throughout the semester.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had in my life. He gives absurd amounts of reading and then you take an I-clicker quiz to get credit. He doesn't tell you what to focus on so basically you have to read his mind and hope you get them all right. And he gives 4 paper which isn't a lot but he doesn't tell you what he wants and then you fail them.
You will be held to a high standard, and, to be frank, you will fail if you are not a serious student. You will read a lot and have big assignments, and the quizzes every class will punish you if you don't read. He's still a great professor who prepares you for history like no other. If you're serious and ready to learn, take Brother Crisp.
GREAT idea to take Dr. Crisp if you're thinking about History as a major/profession. He really cracks down and fleshes out what it will take to make it in the history world of academia. Roughly 40 page of reading between classes. He's tough, brought an enriching experience. *He teaches you how to be a better student and notetaker all around.*
Dr. Crisp is VERY smart but sometimes makes you feel dumb in class. However, he is very kind and helpful outside of class. I met with him several times outside of class and that helped me get a higher grade. He assigns a lot of reading but I feel like I did not learn much from his lectures because they were just power points with lots of info.
This was the hardest class i have ever taken!! I did all the reading take notes on the readings, & i still had a hard time in this class. The reading is usually 40 pages a day, and he doesn't tell you what he wants you to know, just expects you to know everything. No study guides for tests. if you have to take this class take it from someone else
Though he is nice, his class is for experts only. The quizzes are on minor details and the readings are very long. Just yesterday, the reading was 50 pages long. No tech in class so you must print it out. The final is 30 essay. Grades don't get updated and he doesn't use I learn.
I'm fine with reading, it's college and you're going to have to read a lot, but Dr. Crisp just expects way too much! With him you get 50 pages a night and then you are tested on obscure facts from the reading. If you don't know what he wants you to know he makes you feel stupid. He's a smart guy, but he doesn't know how to teach at all.
Mr. Crips knows his history. He is a brilliant guy, very knowledgeable. He's nice in class and outside of class. However, my GPA is in ruins for taking this guy. Many students study very hard and only get a C or B at best from him. He is smart and funny though. But he hurt my GPA in the classes I took from him.
If you enjoy nice teachers who actually explain the material and care about their students, then do not take any class from Brother Crisp! Seriously, he is not a good teacher and he gives intense amounts of reading every class and hardly any it the reading is on the tests. Not a nice person, not a good teacher. Avoid at all costs!
It's been almost 10 years since I took his classes. As I look back on my college experience, I realize, even as an A student, I remember very little of what he taught, which is a stark contrast to other professors with different teaching methods. I hate it, but I really think he should look into another job with his degree, he's just not effective.
I have been a 4.0 student almost my whole life (high school and college), this class has ruined that for me. Dr. Crisp is VERY intelligent, but he is NOT a good teacher. He doesn't care about his students, their learning or grades. The length of readings is ridiculous (up to 60 pages) and he expects you to know every detail. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!
Dr. Crisp is very knowledgeable, however he is a horrible teacher. If you need to take this class take it from anyone but him. He did not have an iLearn I never knew where I standed grade wise. His tests were very arbitrary and relative. For assignments I never completely knew what he wanted, he never had rubrics. He was difficlt to work with.
I took Crisp's His 101 class in 2018, let me tell you terrible teacher. I love history and I love reading he assigns at LEAST 30 pages of reading a night. With no rubric for the mandatory 10 min test you take in class that you will most likely not finish even with notes. He will tell you, that you would be lucky to get a 'C' in his class. Good Luck
If you want a good challenge take him. If you actually want to have some kind of fun learning history don't. Daily quizzes are the worst put together. Quizzes on specifics. Exams on vague. Final is so poorly put together. He doesn't help you really when you ask for it. Just read if you want answers. Nobody was happy in my class. Just don't take him
I attended the class once before I switched to an online section with a different professor. He told us on the first day of class that the average grade in his class is a C, and there is a LOT of reading every night. You can use notes from the reading on the daily quizzes, but they don't help much. There's no textbook; you have to print EVERYTHING.
Textbook was incredibly difficult to read. Plan on spending lots of time doing the reading. I enjoy history, but this class was TOUGH.
Worst professor I've had yet. He assigns way too much reading, the quizzes are super specific and on the tiniest detail, and the reading guides paired with the quizzes take forever to properly complete. Get ready to spend hours upon hours for one assignment. If you have to take this class, find another teacher or just take humanities.
BYUI almost always has teachers who love their students and the subject they teach. Brother Crisp is not one of those teachers. He'll give you huge assignments to do in VERY limited time with some really vague instructions. If you are considering taking this class from him, DO NOT. Take it from Yost! Don't be like me! Learn from my mistakes!!!
Honestly, I have had classes from six other History professors here before taking this class from Dr. Crisp, and I think Crisp is the best of them all. I learned more in his class than I have ever learned in another. You have to be dedicated to get a decent grade, but its definitely possible.
He gives out a lot of work, but he is fair. He does not give specific instructions all the time on how to do the assignments but meeting with him one on one to talk about your grade or the current assignment was extremely clarifying and helpful. He makes you work for the grade and some people get angry by that because they just want to skate by.
If you want an easy A, not for you. If you want a teacher who is going to give you real skills as a historian in the real world. This man is golden! Take advantage of his passion and knowledge. People who complain about Dr. Crisp are lazy, I say that because I didn't do well in his class, but it's because I didn't put in the time. Just do the work.
He is the best and hardest professor I have ever taken. Lots of reading that was very tasteful because he wrote the textbook himself. I think anyone who hates this professor is weak sauce and doesn't understand the difficulty of true academia.
i actually dropped out of this class. I believe this class would be valuable for someone who actually wants to become a historian, but I believe it's too much work for a 100 level class. He expects students who are likely freshman to have the knowledge on how to study history like a senior or even a master's student. Was not impressed.
Soon I will graduate and become a certified teacher. I am not impressed with Brother Crisp. I'm not complaining, but this is easily one of the most difficult classes I have ever taken. He is not a good teacher. I have tried to see the good things he does. I can't. It doesn't matter if he's smart. His job is to teach. He fails on so many levels.
At first, I wasn't a fan of his class. We would have a quiz every day, there was a ton of reading, and I didn't find the lectures very helpful. He allows us to use our handwritten notes on the quizzes and exams. Once I learned how to study and take good notes the class became almost fun. Now that I know what to expect I would take again.
Here's the thing: His classes are rough. Oftentimes, we were quizzed on minute details that were not even in our readings. He would sometimes play audio of lectures from professional medieval historians and expect us to know the content. All of that being said, I learned how to read closely and search for details. Hardest B I ever earned.
I was not doing well in the class and asked him how I could do better. He basically told me that the quizes are your feedback. First off, you dont even see what questions you get wrong so how are you suppose to know exactly where to improve? It got to the point where I decided to drop the course and he said, "That would good". What?!
Dr. Crisp is an example of what a college professor is supposed to be like. He doesnt just let you cruise through class with little effort and then gives you an A, he makes you work for it. He is a professor to take if you are going to major in History. His classes are tough, but you will come out smarter than you would in any other history class.
Brother Crisp knows his stuff but he is far from a fair, understanding teacher. He also isn't great with specific questions or meeting with students to help them. I got an assignment back and his comment was "you've got to understand this" but when I asked him for help, he told me to try harder and read the textbook. He just doesn't care enough.
He grades with a checkmark system that only tells you a general grade range you receive, you can only see your official grade at midterm, he doesn't use canvas, and his lectures and homework are entirely separate. He is a horrible teacher. A teacher who believes their own high intelligence equates to good teaching is arrogant and useless. Run away.
Not impressed with this professor at all. He is very smart but does not care for his students. You go the entire semester without being able to see your grade. I love paying for classes that I am not even able to see how I am doing in. Just run. Take any other professor if possible.
I don't want to say anything too harsh because I know that's not fair to him. My class was supposed to be remote, but because Brother Crisp didn't want to we ended up pretty much on our own for the semester. He would send us emails twice a week but other than that I don't feel like he taught very well at all.
This was supposed to be a remote/zoom class and I spent all that money to teach myself. Our grades were always locked so you couldn't see your progress, and every unit you had to turn in your notes from the reading but if they weren't in his format you failed, even if they made no sense to you . I learned absolutely nothing from this class.
Unwilling to really teach. Only emails class once maybe twice a week and leaves us alone to struggle through then harshly grades. Does not encourage students only critiques them negatively.
Professor Ryan Crisp was hands down the worst teacher I have had. This course was supposed to meet in the mornings from 7:45-8:45, however we did not meet once. We were expected to figure everything out on our own and were given way too much work. Not to mention, our quizzes were only open from 7:45-8:00 in the morning. Ridiculous and impractical.
Professor Crisp is the worst. He doesnt show grades the entire semester and shows no mercy. I dont understand why he teaches when all he wants to do is make life miserable for college kids. Avoid at all costs.
If you are expecting to pass his classes be ready to spend so much time on his assignments, and readings. He doesn't show grades and won't help you at all on bumping them up. Later I had to take a HIST 316 class as a requirement, and the only person teaching this was him. totally regretted. Be ready to take most of the times long quizzes in 15 min
I took his class during COVID and instead of doing his class through zoom like he was supposed to, he decided to have us simply reply to the discussion board. He gives you 15 minutes to complete a 20 question quiz. He includes maps that have multiple A's, B's, etc where you're supposed to guess which A he's talking about on the map. Won't help you.
Many students complain about Dr. Crisp, but for the record I think he is an excellent teacher. I learned and grew in many ways, especially in my writing, through this tough class. Yes, there was TONS of reading and writing, but that's the nature of history! I wanted to give him a 4.5, but couldn't; I would say a 5 if he let us see our grades!!
Many students complain about Dr. Crisp because he seems to have such high expectations. All his expectations are lined out in the syllabus. This class is about taking notes/reading comprehension: you read a section of the textbook and a primary source document, or a section in "History: A Very Short Introduction" and take a quiz.
I would rate zero if I could, I tried to walk in the door two minutes before class started the door was locked and he would not let me in. If you teach a 300 level class and are that controlling you do not need to be a teacher at any level. The grading system makes zero sense claims it is so you work hard but I think it is he doesn't have to grade.
If you want to read a textbook written by him, spend +3 hours a night reading it and source essays, and making maps from scratch, and crying at least once a week- take a class from Dr. Crisp! I literally hate his class so much, he makes me want to drop out, and I'm losing motivation for all of my classes. If I could give him a 0 I would.
while hes not a bad teacher in person his style of note taking and quizez every day makes this class very hard. spend 2 hours taking notes for one chapter and find that the test answers are everything you didnt take notes on and werent the main points of the chapter, and his whole grading depends on this
Want to read a textbook written by the professor whelp here you go. I wanted to take a fun history class this was not it. You will have to read the textbook. There is a quiz in every class. Also, you will spend an outlandish amount of time on notes. Also, a major red flag is that he states a lot of people will drop the class.
Dr. Crips has an absolutely horrible reputation, some of which is deserved but I do not believe most of these ratings are accurate. Once you get into his upper-division classes, particularly his medieval classes, you get to see who he really is. He is knowledgeable, kind, and definitely cares about his students and making them the best they can be.
He is the Bill Belichick of the history department: He expects a lot from you, you are going to have to work really hard, but you will become the best student you could possibly be. I have learned more from his 300 level classes in terms of info and academic skills than from almost any other class. He is blunt, but really cares about his students.
Gives you HIS textbook and makes you guess what you'll need to know for HIS quizzes. Takes several hours outside of class per lecture period. Quizzes are daily, no makeup possible. Randomly assigns essays with little to no criteria given, says they're not for a grade but adds them to you grade anyway. Not reccomended.
Professor Crisp is intelligent about his classes, but expects a lot from his students. You'll do a lot of reading from the textbook and there are quizzes everyday. Overall his class was really stressful because no grades are posted on canvas and you don't get scores back on any of the quizzes except for on an occasional progress report.
Very difficult, not great at answering emails. Don’t even think that canvas is your friend. You will be in the dark about your grade at all times. Nice guy, but he does deserve the rep he’s given. The class structure is too difficult for those who have any medical/learning disabilities. No forgiveness. Knocks points off grades for preferences.
Dr. Crisp is hard but fair. His study guides are clearly laid out, the assigned literature is easy to read, he's clearly an expert in his field, grades fairly, accepts late work with docked points, and every assignment is applicable to what you're learning. Put in the work and you'll do well. I'm terrified of him but love taking his classes.
Supposed to meet MWF but never did and just had 15min quizzes each class instead. Short but hard to finish in only 15 mins, even with open notes. Tons of reading and notetaking. Basically just learned from textbook. Hard work but learned a ton from his textbook and tests. Disabled ability to view grades. Inaccessible, only able to speak to TA.
Dr. Crisp is a teacher who sets a very clear standard for what he wants in his classes. Many get upset at him but they're students who don't agree with his teaching style. I didn't at first either. But I can promise I learned more from him than any other teacher at BYU-I. It's hard and you have to work for it but it'll be worth it in the end.
I was Crisp's TA for 9 months. His reputation is unfounded. He cares a lot about his students and wants them to succeed. If you put effort in his class you will not fail. Don't be scared of him and reach out to him when you struggle. Manage your time and your notes. If you want to twiddle your thumbs and do nothing, take a Pulsipher class instead.
Dr.Crisp's expectations are high but are possible to meet. All assignments are printed in a special format which is easy to master. If you're a history major you should expect to do a lot of reading and writing anyway. This class just prepares you for what's to come. The only truly annoying thing was the fact that grades are hidden.
Inaccessible and rude. Makes inappropriate jokes and uses the textbook instead of teaching. I ended up dropping because I just couldn't lose my 4.0 to a 'teacher' like this
Dr. Crisp in class a remarkably intelligent man who knows exactly what he's talking about. However, his class is extremely test heavy [1 quiz every class], and the homework the night before each class will take approx. 1-2 hours. He doesn't post grades on canvas either, you'll be in the dark on that one. He's good in-class, but I wouldn't takeagain
I have had him three times now. He has lots of homework and quizzes almost every class but as the semester goes on, there are less quizzes. Although he grades really hard, his instructions and rubrics are super clear, so as a long as you follow the instructions, you can keep your grade up. But be prepared to read and take A LOT of notes
Professor Crisp is an educator who has chosen the wrong career. A great historian of his field and the worst history professor in all education. Does not keep an updated grade book, does not provide any feedback on assignments, has evident contempt for students generally, quizzed every day on readings. Exceeds expected hours for credit. Do NOT take
I took three education classes last semester. I would like him to take at least one.
He is not worst teacher I have ever had because I once had a sub walk out in the middle of the day in fifth grade. Does not teach. May be incapable of lesson planning. Expects 300's level skill and effort while giving 100's level guidance.
Should not have become a teacher, honestly. He doesn't know how to teach, and he's been doing it for a while
His classes revolved around reading a lot, then taking open note quizzes every class. He has super clear grading criteria and wants every one to do well. A lot of reviews have complained about the reading schedule and quizzes, but if you are a history major you should already be used to that. Overall difficult course load but great class.
Dr. Crisp is extremely checked out. This is my second class of his that I've taken. Both show the same problems. He doesn't use canvas, so finding assignment due dates is difficult. He doesn't do anything in class but ask us open questions until one of us gets the answer he wants. He seems detached from teaching because it lacks any real effort.
Don't ever take from him!! You will not be able to see your grades ever and you are not aloud to ask him about your grades either. He has very high expectations that are too high. I asked him why we don't get to see our grades and he told me it was not important. He doesn't care about what you have to say he will not listen. IT'S HIS WAY OR NO WAY.
So not take a class by this guy unless absolutely necessary. He's a tough grader and expects 300 quality work while giving 100 quality information in class. There is no discussion of events, only a discussion of what we've read in the chapters. He makes his daily quiz questions about the smallest possible details in the text and grades harshly.
Dr. Crisp is a very straightforward teacher but he is extremely helpful in helping you achieve the course outcome. Class generally followed a quiz based on the reading, turn in (paper copies) of homework AT THE START (don't be late), and lecture on the topic and then on citations. Lots of work and late nights but you learn a lot. DO OFFICE HOURS!
Amazing history professor who will push you to actually learn the different regions physical and human landscapes and historical events. One of my absolute favorite professors. He is organized and will help you understand assignments and gives great and speedy feedback on writing assignments. You will walk away actually knowing history!
Tough but rewarding class with clear expectations. Lots of work, but Dr. Crisp's structure helps you learn. Try Unstuckstudy for effective study prep.
If you want a class to take all of your time and only learn from the book this is the class for you. Every class he gives you a paper quiz based on 12 pages of reading you do before class. If you are late to class you get 5 points deducted from your grade. It just wasn't a fun class to take, and isn't a helpful teacher with a heavy schedule.
Don't be scared of Dr. Crisp. He is more reserved than other professors, but he is extremely willing to help with any assignment or essay you have questions about. People don't like his class because unlike other BYU-I classes, Dr. Crisp expects students to actually put in effort to receive a good grade. If you are lazy you will not succeed.
He never made me feel stupid when I asked stupid questions. He has his students take a short quiz at the start of each class. He is much of a lecturer. A lot of students do not favor this teacher mostly because he expects you to read and come ready to take the quiz. He really helps you develop critical thinking skills.
Nice guy. Obviously very knowledgeable in his chosen field. The few positive reviews say that he actually forces you to learn, which is true, but I feel like that's offset by the fact that he doesn't really prepare you to meet his expectations. He just kind of throws you in headfirst and expects you to figure it out on your own.
I had the hardest time in his class. Even the history majors were struggling on tests. It was a mostly "self-taught" class. He requires 2 textbooks and chapters on chapters of reading. Tests will be taken every day before class starts. His finals were extremely challenging. I would not recommend this teacher.
I had Dr. Crisp for Roman Imperialism, and he was a very difficult professor. I ended up dropping his class because I did not know how I was supposed to get a decent grade in his class. He was rude and did not have clear expectations on how to succeed. I will definitely avoid his classes in the future.
Worst professor I've had. Gives 50 page reading assignments with fill in the blanks and question packets to answer every two days, and it has NOTHING to do with what he teaches. It's all busy work. He only shows you your grade at midterms and then finals, and even then it's his own grade system so it makes no sense. Dropped at the midterm point.
Each class began with a quiz that was open note. Despite hours to read and curate my note sheet, I never did well. Despite being an A student in every class before this, I was down to a C by the middle of the semester. All-paper class. We got an update of our grade 3 three times per semester. We also got 0 feedback on our work.
I wouldn't advise anyone to take this class. Very tough to stay on top of work, which includes readings over 20 pages long in two different books, almost 0 assignments (only discussions every now and again), nonsense exams, unimportant facts, and it's very hard to focus in class because of a monotone voice. Do not take this class.
I regret this class. It wasted my money. I have never had a professor that sounded so negative. Not to mention the 20+ pages of reading per week and then the assigned note pages. I lost all my love for history during this semester because of his teaching. I will never take a history class ever again.
