I took him at UMD but I felt you guys should know how great he is. His lectures were so interesting. His exams were difficult and papers were a bit annoying, but I highly recommend him. His office was open to whatever questions and he was very accommodating.
Dr. Curtis makes very difficult exams and does not care that they are so hard and that the entire class does so poorly on them. His extra credit he offers for the midterms can negatively impact your grade if you miss more than 5 questions on it. Tests are 60% of your grade and nearly everyone gets Cs or Ds on them. Would not recommend his class.
I'm sure Dr. Curtis is a good guy but I highly discourage you from taking his general psych class. He takes easy concepts and makes them into test questions that are highly confusing and much harder than they should be. The other teachers make the tests easy and online, his are neither.
He takes attendance for a 1000 level psych course in a 400 person lecture. He takes himself very seriously and doesn't understand that 99% of the class is paying $50k to go here and are forced to take this class as a prerequisite.
Ryan Curtis tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A. Lectures are interesting and slow enough to gain understanding. The tests are simple as long as you study. Those who did not study complained about the tests being very difficult. I would not recommend taking him if you are not willing to take the time to memorize everything.
He's not the worst, pretty good teacher and his lectures aren't boring. If you are looking for an easy Psyc 1001 class then I would go with another prof. He makes you work for it and doesn't have online tests or posted lectures like the other professors. You'll be fine though just show up to class and study for tests. Take advantage of the EC.
Thinks he is a super genius and makes the tests way too difficult for an intro psychology class. Had a A- going into the final, in which he made open note, but that did not even matter because it was the hardest test I have ever taken; even as a Biology major. Bombed the test and got a B, thank a lot Ryan Curtis!!
Professor Curtis is a really good teacher. Although he acts pretty hard on the outside, deep down inside I think Ryan might care about his students grades. If you show up to class and do the homework this class is an easy A.
This class is extremely hard. It's hard for even the best students, but I am not one of those students. He tries to explain it as best and simply as he can, but it's just confusing. The homework is really hard, the tests are hard, the topic is hard, he doesn't reply back to messages asking for help so don't even bother because he doesn't care.
Worst Prof I've ever had. Changes grading scales with 4 weeks left in the semester, bringing grades down by 13%
Dr. Curtis is a very knowledgeable guy and very good at conveying the material to students. He offered my classes multiple extra credit opportunities that are often light-hearted and fun like dressing up, writing poetry about psych, performing a talent, etc. The class does take studying to do well on the exams and homework.
Honestly this shouldn't be a 1001 level class at all. Also, the worksheets revolve around chapter reading assignments that easily take 2-3 hours. The exams are revolved around examples that use the terms we study, he always made it clear "NO definitions on the exam, YOU need to USE the terms on the exam and break it apart". Super annoying...
Awful awful awful class. Homeworks take at least an hour a week with a ton of reading and watching videos, and the fact that he didnt lift the 12 credit hour research requirement due to in person experiments being cancelled is beyond scummy. Left me having to write 12 pages of research papers to get to the credit requirement.
Ryan Curtis comes off tough in the beginning but I promise if you stick through it the class will be worth it. He makes lectures funny and interactive. You do have to take notes, study and attend the lectures to do well. There is about 2 hours of homework due every Wednesday, with reading and videos, but if you like psych you will enjoy it! 10/10
I forced myself to sit in the front row and actually study for the tests instead of just "look over" my notes . He doesnt post his lectures online so if you don't go to class you will NOT do well, makes the lectures very interesting and provides us with a lot of extra credit. He also added a bunch of points at the end of the year to boost grades
Dr. Curtis is actually a very good professor. For statistics, he explains all the material over and over again until it seems like everyone understands. His lectures are fun and engaging.
Dr. Curtis is easily the best professor I've had. He is smart and knows how to teach the toughest classes and will encourage you to be passionate about psychology though many people put down the major. Go talk to him about what you want to do and go to his office hours. He will help you.
If you're taking this class online, go to his actual lectures. The fact you need to go to two lectures is bull, but it's the only way you can actually know about what you're gonna be tested on. Blames the entire class for his poorly made exams (consists of fun facts over content), and spent the whole lecture complaining about how poorly we did.
I took PSYC 2606 with Dr. Curtis. He is amazing, and his lectures are not boring. He cares his students and gives lots of extra credit opportunities. His office hours are very helpful. If you want to pass with an A, you need to study. Throughout the semester we had 2 mid-terms, a final and two project papers.
He's an okay teacher, but apparently way better than other psych stats teachers. He can be passive-aggressive, but fair. He does not grade on a curve even if the whole class average was low. His flipped classroom works well, but be aware the second test is the hardest. Get a tutor after the first test if you're bad at math. TAKE NOTES!
I thought I would really enjoy this class fall of 2020 but it sucked. I did badly on the first exam I attributed it to me not studying enough, afterward everyone did terribly and he was very angry at us. I studied and did what he said to do to pass the 2 exam and I still failed. Overall he was a very passive-aggressive teacher 10/10 don't recommend
I had Curtis for both PSYC 2111 and 3111. I have experienced his teaching both before and during the pandemic. With this being said, the honest truth is that stats for Psych majors is difficult. You have to be prepared to work on your own and attend lectures mandatory or no matter who the instructor is. Curtis is exceptional and always helpful
I had Dr. Curtis for 2 classes and he is a true gem. He truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He makes a class that is supposed to be boring (like Research Methods) and makes it fun by using funny and real-world examples. Hands down one of my favorite professors in the PSYC department.
Mr. Curtis is a very charismatic and intelligent professor who truly cares about the success and knowledge of his students. I definitely recommend him, the class isn't difficult but its not easy, and he helps you out a lot.
I really enjoyed his class. One of the best psych professors I have had. He's really funny, and though he is no nonsense and strict on homework due-dates, its fine if you just put the work in!
Took this class during covid and it was an easy A. Show up to class and he goes over the worksheets for easy points every week. A few lectures that are kinda long but you can find them on youtube and speed them up. He makes class super fun and entertaining. PSYC 1001 was a great class for the science credit I needed.
I had Prof. Curtis for General Psychology, the class was a flipped class so we watched lectures whenever we wanted on our own and did the homework together. I liked this because we would go over questions that are most likely on the exam. (the homework are very similar to the exam). I would highly recommend any psychology student take his class.
Dr. Curtis is one of the best professors I've ever had. He made a pretty difficult/boring class very engaging and made sure to repeat concepts over and over until we understood. The class was flipped so we watched lectures outside of class then did homework together. Never even opened the textbook.
Professor Curtis is a great prof. You do need to study to do well in the class though. Labs are pretty easy and Curtis will go review topics as many times as you need. He gives a few extra credit opportunities as well. Its not my favorite course content wise but he made it fairly easy and enjoyable.
I just wanted to go out of my way to say dont take this professor. I dont have anything else to say other than avoid him at all costs. I hope this helps
Dr. Curtis is clearly knowledgeable about his subject, but he is just not meant to teach. He's not encouraging and overall I felt like he didn't care about student success. I really enjoy psych, but Dr. Curtis put me off from it. His tests are incredibly confusing. His talents would be used better strictly performing research. 0/10 experience.
Curtis is the goat. He really breaks it down pretty simply and easily. He's actually pretty hilarious and wants students to ask questions. He responds frequently, he grades fairly. As long as you actually care about school and doing work, you should be fine. Look statistics is just hard, there no way to get around that but he minimizes that for sur
Professor Curtis is one of the better professors in the psychology department at CU. As ridiculous as a 4 credit hour summer class sounds, Curtis was able to make this class a true pleasure. As long as you keep up with the video quizzes BEFORE lecture, you should be good. Showing up to lecture really helps in understanding the content. 10/10 prof
He is genuinely a very good teacher and his lectures are very informative and engaging. He gives resources and will help you when you have problems understanding. The class is difficult and you have to genuinely work for a good grade, however, if you use resources and put in any effort you will enjoy and do well in class.
Honestly, the only reason I passed because it was moved to online because of Covid. The overall class is very interesting but this should definitely be a higher level course and not intended for a general "introduction" class to psych. You better know what every single vocab word means and you will happily pass and bring a CLICKER!!
Dr. Curtis is an amazing teacher. I am currently enrolled in one of his classes it is probably one o the few classes I've really enjoyed in my college career. He is very funny, but also super knowledgeable on the topics at hand. Would definitely recommend his class to anyone, as im not a psychology major but I still love this class. Thank you.
He can be intense during lectures but it's a tactic to keep you studying. He will absolutely help you if you need it, and he has been personally very kind to me on a number of occasions when he didn't have to be. I was struggling (due to outside life stuff) and his tone changed. He pays attention and is a good teacher on top of that.
Curtis is a great professor. His one flaw is that it is a bit advanced for a 100 level class but it's very interesting. He does a flipped classroom so lecture videos which are interactive and out of class and the homework in class. Two midterms and one final which are very manageable.
Curtis has adopted a half online, half in person format, and does it in the worst possible way. You need to complete online 'quizzes', that are just lecture content, and you can choose to go to class to work on the homework. He omits things on the homework so you have to go to class, making it so you have to go to six of his classes a week. Awful.
Honestly people complain about Dr. Curtis a lot and I am not sure why. He is a great professor and offers a lot of help if needed. He breaks things down conceptually so you are not just learning useless equations. He cares a lot about his students on a personal level as well. I don't even go to class but watch the online video quizzes and do fine.
Dr. Curtis psyc1001 class was all online so I didnt connect with it as much as Id like but zoom meetings were going over the homework for the week. We reviewed for exams together. There were notes to take but not too many. Overall a good class
While the class was listed as remote, Dr. Curtis does a good job of blending online features with assigned Zoom class. We had lecture videos to watch then class time was devoted to further discussions on the topic. I think this was really helpful for learning the content and lessening the need to study outside of class.
i love Dr Curtis!!! Yes he can be hard and harsh, but he cares about his students and wants us to do well. That is very obvious in his teaching. He is also super funny and likable if you give him a chance. I feel like people might just not love him because stats sucks, but he teaches it really well!! Would recommend
Curtis is the single worst Professor I’ve ever had. I’ve never met a teacher more condescending and rude to students when just trying to get help or ask general questions. He expected everyone to be psych masters after wk 1, and got mad when his questions were unanswered. Highly recommend NEVER taking any of his classes.
Although stats is annoying, Dr. Curtis is genuinely a good teacher and teaches in a way that is relatable and that sticks in your head forever. As a former student of his, I vouch for the fact that the way he teaches is super helpful and is useful moving forward into grad school and your career. 11/10 would take his class again
Dr Curtis made me love psychology. Thought I would not enjoy his "flipped class" at first, but I was impressed with how well it was executed this year, as it allows you to do the lectures on your own time and at your own pace. Clearly whatever polishing needed to be done since previous years was done. I always felt prepared for exams.
Very nice in disposition, just a bit strict. Not a great class if you prefer to sit and absorb information in lectures, because you watch lectures at home online. Gives hw answers in class though. Tests are huge part of grade, you have to study for sure. I never study and my first test I had was a slap in the face. Taught me to study.
Class itself isn't mandatory (lab is) but it's extremely helpful and you'll get all of the right homework answers if you go. Offers a lot of extra credit and you can do very well if you just put in effort and go to class. He is very concise and covers any questions that may come up.
My favorite short king. He is very homework heavy as you learn the material on your own via videos you provide. However, if you watch the videos and show up to class(where he gives all the answers to the homework), and go to labs you should be just fine :)
Dr. Curtis' tests are hard, I struggled with them quite a bit, but contrary to another review on here, he actually goes out of his way to help students if you go to office hours. I personally like his lecture style, and it is worth your time to go to class, that's the material he tests on. Overall, good professor and you need to study for the tests
If you go to his lectures you are 100% guaranteed an A in the class. Also, since his lectures are available online, I sometimes didn't even have to go to class to understand the lesson. The only complaint I have is that if you go to class just for a question on the homework you do have to sit through his entire lecture which can be pretty boring.
I really enjoyed Dr. Curtis' class, but I wasn't a big fan of the flipped-style classroom. The tests are hard, you need to study for them. But he really is a nice and understanding guy. The lecture videos didn't completely inspire me but the content was interesting!
He used a flipped-style classroom which I thought was nice and made the class a bit easier. His videos were helpful and contained a lot of interesting content. I liked how he gave the homework answers in class. The tests were a bit difficult and requires some studying despite being open book. In general, I found him to be a good professor.
I loved Curtis! The material was interesting and he taught complicated subjects in a very digestible way. He does flipped schedule which some like, some don't. As long as you engage in class, watch the lectures, and study you'll succeed in this course. I managed to pass with little use of the textbook as well.
LOVE LOVE LOVE. TAKE THIS CLASS. Open note exams, fun lectures, clear grading, and extra credit opportunities. He makes class fun, and psych very easy to understand. Make sure to take very detailed notes, and you will pass with flying colors.
Ryan Curtis could probably explain Calculus to an elementary schooler, but sometimes he oversimplifies things and over explains things.
Dr. Curtis is a good teacher but the class itself is pretty hard. Don't slack off and keep up on the lecture videos and GO TO CLASS! Attendance isn't mandatory but the classes are incredibly helpful.
I think that Prof Curtis is about the best that you're gonna get when it comes to stats. He's amazing at explaining, although sometimes oversimplifies. Don't be fooled by the action figurines in the first few lectures, this class gets hard.
He is very nice and lenient
Dr. Curtis is the best. I took this class online over the summer- lots of work but manageable. He required the textbook, but I was able to get B's on all exams and an A in the class without ever purchasing the book. TAKE NOTES. Offers easy extra credit. To do well: keep up w lecture videos and pay attention when he raises his voice in class.
I really enjoyed having Curtis as my social psych professor
His lectures are incredible and I am purposefully taking another one of his classes. The textbook can be annoying at times but thats all.
Dr. Curtis is a solid professor and I would recommend his classes to anyone. I had some trouble with the material at times, but lectures are interesting and he's a pretty funny guy. Attendance isn't mandatory. He uses a flipped lecture style; lectures are online recordings, and material is gone over in more depth in class.
The exams are very tough in his class. You have to take very good notes. Lectures are actually on video instead of the actual class. He explains the material really well in class.
Dr. Curtis is very engaging and funny, but the flipped class model sometimes makes it hard to stay on top of new material and lectures.
He grades easy, and the information required for exams is more than easy to acquire.
This class just cannot be taught well with over 300 people. The video lectures are leftovers from the pandemic, and l found them unbearable. 2 video lectures a week with clicker questions, plus a 20-30 question worksheet. Busy work galore, plus 3 huge exams! I took this for an easy science credit, I would recommend it, but it does suck.
Very straight forward classes and has everything organized well for his students.
Dr. Curtis is fantastic. Unintentionally hilarious and could probably teach Calculus to fifth graders. If you stay up to date with homework, go to lectures, and pay attention when he says *Do Not Do This!!*, you will be just fine.
Curtis is great! He explains concepts very thoroughly. His video quizzes tell you everything that's on the tests, so just take notes! Worksheets are long, but he gives you all the answers in class. Only 3 exams and all online/open note. Textbook is free. He will tell you clearly when things are/aren't on exams, so just pay attention for an easy A!
Typically a reverse teaches but I loved it because I could take my time on my notes. Very caring professor and is always willing to help.
Online lectures, but if you go to class you will be guaranteed an A. Best stats professor I've ever had. He truly knows what he's doing and offers additional help if you need it. The teaching style makes it easy for you to slack off, but seriously just go to class and you will be completely fine. He keeps class engaging anyway!
Ryan Curtis was a really good professor. His lectures are easy to stay engaged and if you go to class you will get a good grade. There are extra credit opportunities and he gives you the answers to the worksheets in class. If you go to class and turn in your work you will probably get a good grade.
Optional attendance flipped classroom, but he makes coming into class worth it.
Very entertaining lecturer who makes the content of the course fun to learn about. He reviews the important material many times during class to help solidify the big topics. Tests are open note and online but can still be challenging.
Dr. Curtis was one of the best professors I have had at CU yet. You can tell he knows what he is talking about and made it interesting for me to learn about the material. He does a flipped classroom learning style where lectures are watched outside of class and discussed via worksheet during class. I'll recommend taking Dr. Curtis for psych.
Absolutely love Dr. Curtis. One of the best psych professors I have had at CU. You can tell he loves his students and his job. Lectures are engaging but be prepared to take notes. Exams are based off a lot of stuff talked about in class and on worksheet quizzes which he goes over in class. Attendance isn't mandatory. Would definitely recommend.
Ryan Curtis is the best!
This is one of the easiest classes you can take. Professor Curtis was an entertaining lecturer, though the class in flipped I do not think attendance is mandatory
Professor Curtis is amazing. This class was easy and very interesting. You watch video lectures on your time which don't take more than 30 minutes. All the homework is done in class where he gives you the right answers. There's one research paper which is done by yourself and then a second one which is can be done in a group. Lots of extra credit.
Go to class!! It is very useful. This class needs a lot of work and time.
His flipped classroom mode was very time consuming, as he would assign lecture videos to watch at home that would often take an hour each, and he would assign 1-2 every day. His exams are also confusingly worded, and he would often brag about having low exam averages, which to me seems like his issue rather than a fault of his students.
The flipped classroom thing is REALLY nbd. The videos are 30 mins, there's only 2-3 due each week, and it's the only thing you do for him outside of class besides the two research papers, which were both super simple. Also if you've already taken Curtis for gen psych you'll have no problem bc he reteaches half of that class in social psych. EASY A
I've taken Social Psych as well as Psych 2111 and 3111 with Curtis and he is probably one of the best professors in the department. The flipped format can be a little confusing but if you engage with it you will learn better than the normal way. He seems rather strict on syllabus day but he is often very understanding and helpful.
Curtis is a great guy, but I had a friend pass away back home and I asked for an excused absence for one lab credit and he asked me to forward him the obituary or proof of the funeral procession. I get he strictly follows his syllabus but to this day I will never forget the feeling of having to prove that my friend was just killed for a grade.
It was a flipped classroom -- helped learn material better
I like prof Curtis! At first I thought his tests were hard because of the many questions where you can click multiple answers but sometimes it's just one. In reality Curtis goes over most things on the exam, especially on review days and also usually emphasizes to hints to things on exams. My biggest piece of advice is rewatch the video quizzes!
Amazing teacher, but when it comes down to the exams they are worded weirdly and make it seem like they are trying to get you. Lab is amazing and very applicable outside of lab and useful in lecture. Sometimes what is learned is not the same as in exams, changes the way he words things so don't get too comfortable with what you know. Funny.
I enjoyed this professor and his class, I do recommend it to other students, he is funny and I believe caring. You will end up writing papers for this class and studying for the Exams can be heavy.
Dr. Curtis clearly cares about the success of his students and their understanding. Everything on the exams is relevant class material that was went over either in class or on the video quizzes. While PSYC 1001 is a relatively easy class already he makes the material clear as well as his expectations on assignments such as the written assignments.
Dr. Curtis is awesome. The whole flipped classroom thing (in my opinion) is extremely helpful. I like being able to take my notes on my own time and at my own pace. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I recommend going as he explains concepts from the lectures again and with more examples. Plus he's really entertaining. Loved this class.
I have nothing bad to say about Curtis. I liked the flipped classroom, and his lectures were engaging and helpful to go to even if not mandatory. The tests are online and open note, and this class isn't hard if you put the work in.
I love the flipped classroom format, as I am not rushed to take notes. Exams are open-note, so make sure your notes are up to date. The assignments and worksheets are very straightforward, and Dr. Curtis talks about uncomfortable topics such as disorder and trauma very respectfully.
Professor Curtis is one of the best teachers I have had at CU. He has perfected his curriculum so it is comprehensive and easy to learn while also covering a lot of material. His lectures are very engaging as well. As a non-psych major this class was perfect to introduce me to the topic.
He's a great professor who does his absolute best to ensure that the material is fun and easy to learn. Classroom is flipped, but if you actually watch the lectures, take the notes, and pay attention in class, he makes it very clear what you should or shouldn't study for tests. He makes showing up to class extremely beneficial.
He is very passionate about everything he teaches. He will help you as much as he can. As long as you stay up to date on the notes and actually pay attention you shouldn't have any issues with the material for the class. I would not recommend missing classes because he gives a lot of information you need during class time.
Professor Curtis is great! There is a flipped classroom teaching style, but he reviews the homework in class, so it's not hard to do well. He is very understanding of conflicts and online exams! Definitely one of my top professors this semester
Curtis is one of my favorites profs ever. He is SO knowledgable in his field and is incredible at explaining different concepts in understandable way. His class is set up flipped, which I usually don't like, but it worked really well and I felt prepared and confident. Best psych professor
Professor Curtis is an amazing teacher. His lectures are very well prepared and he always keeps the class entertaining. He is very passionate about his field and always did his best to answer everyone's questions. The flipped class style was super easy to follow and gives you a lot of freedom to complete assignments at your own pace. Great class!
Dr. Curtis made stats a little less miserable. He's great but the class is a bit difficult. Make sure you go to class because he will sometimes give you hints on some of the exam questions. Take extensive notes on the video quizzes and have your formulas all in one place so you can have them for the final.
Dr. Curtis' flipped classroom worked out really well for me and made the homework super easy to do. For those who weren't so mathmatically inclined, I know he had super available office hours and so did the TAs. He answered all questions to the point. BUT he does repeat things a lot, really slowly, making class feel longer.
Dr. Curtis is an amazing professor. His teaching style was flipped, meaning we would watch videos outside of class and he would work us through the homework in class which was really good. You could tell he really loves what he does, and he knows what he is talking about. I would definitely recommend!
Dr. Curtis is great! The flipped class style lets you learn outside of class and work through homework in class. He's knowledgeable and makes the material interesting. It's easy to do well as long as you pay attention and take notes, plus the tests are open note.
such a great professor. he is so funny and makes learning the content so enjoyable. i recommend going over the video lectures and textbook questions when studying for exams because they are super helpful.
Dr. Curtis was a great lecturer and always explained the concepts and their applications quite clearly. The structure of his class is also great because you do the worksheets together in class.
Definitely recommend! Attendance was not mandatory, but for sure go to the lectures because it was a flipped classroom setting. Ryan Curtis has an awesome attitude about teaching, and is an awesome guy!
He was honestly such a fun professor. I know attentence isn't mandatory but you should go because he likes to slide in helpful stuff for exams during lecture.
Professor Curtis is an incredible professor. I am not a psych major, but if I was I would take more of his classes. He explained material in ways that were easy to understand. The class was flipped, so we went through all the worksheets as a class, and the exams were open note, open book. Attendance was not mandatory but lectures were interesting
I have loved taking this class! Ryan is a wonderful professor when it comes to lecturing; I am always entertained. Before each class, you have to watch a 30-minute lecture video, which can be completed at any time for full credit, but when going to class, the lecture is very repetitive. Class is not mandatory but helpful.
He has a flipped style where there is about 30-minute lecture videos before each class, which I was hesitant about, but it's actually helpful and really easy! As long as you take notes on those videos, you only need the class time for him to fill out the worksheet quizzes which give you enough info so that you don't have read the textbook.
The professor changed the syllabus mid-term and switched the midterm and final from online to in-person. The exams were extremely difficult: 50 MCQs in 50 minutes, all select-all-that-apply. The class was poorly organized, and the project was graded very harshly. The midterm average was around 50%. Avoid if you care about your GPA. Very unfair. Ok.
