Not clear, doesn't answer the questions he asks--waits a million years for the confused class to answer. Maybe he'll get better-he's new, but I didn't like him at all.
He made the class boring, and he doesn't know how to teach
He is really smart, but he doesn't know how to teach at all. I didn't get anything out of going to class.
Possibly the worst teacher I have ever had!! HANDS DOWN!
i don't know what the other people were talking about when they were rating dabell. he is smart and he does teach the subject well. you have to do the reading before class. its a hard class, but he is willing to help and there is a tutor available, which i recommend if you want to get an A.
I thought he was a great teacher. People complain because they want to be spoonfed... and they dont want to work for class. Dabell makes you work hard, and the class is difficult, but I thought he did a great job of presenting the material. He was very helpful with quesions outside of class, and he prepared me for the final. I recommend him.
Bro Dabell was a great teacher. I think that anyone who gave him a bad rating just wasn't willing to put in the time and effort to learn the material. He knew the material VERY well and was able to give many examples when asked. He was willing to help and really wanted the students to understand. I would take him for any class I could.
Great teacher. Really funny. Made class enjoyable.
This class is TOUGH! He's not a great teacher. Bro. Dabell used to be a researcher at a government institution and his personality reflects it. I studied hard for this class, but did horrible. I admit that I wasn't prepared for CHEM105 when I took it, but friends of mine have put in plenty of effort and done very poorly in that class.
Brother Dabell was the worst educator of any kind that I have ever seen or heard of. Every time I asked a question, I was left feeling like an I shouldn't have asked anything in the first place because he made me feel like such an idiot afterward. I would recomend anyone but him if you want to get a good grade.
Brother DaBell is the epitomy of nerd, but he is actually pretty funny. He sometimes struggles to teach on your level, because frankly, the guy knows a ton about the subject. But if you participate and show interest, he will gladly slow the class lecture down to reiterate a point that students are not understanding.
Brother Dabell knows his stuff. He expects you to actually read the material an know it. He assigns homework for practice that will foreshadow the quizzes and exams. He will not ask for you to turn in the homework. He is willing to help for hours on end. The hardest thing is that he expects you to be able to apply knowledge to unseen problems.
favorite teacher ever!!
He was the hardest teacher I have ever had because he made you feel stupid if you asked a question and then you still wouldn't understand. He didn't really come down to the student's level.
I took this class from him and got an A. It's tough stuff, but he is very willing to help.
For all you who say that if you simply worked hard and you'd get an a are all high on something (perhaps the spirit since it's byui) I have never put so many hours into a class and yet I had to drop. And, my GPA is higher than 3.5.
Brother Dabell is the worst teacher I have ever had. First I want to say yes he knows his stuff and expects you to read. Second, I read almost everyday for class and I got an A in 105 and an A in math 110 (the two recommendations before taking this class) and right now I have a D in Brother Dabells 106 class. He does make you feel extremely stupid.
smart but weird.
good teacher tries to make subject matter interesting. sometimes finds it difficult to explain complex concepts clearly and simply. is willing to take time out of his personal time to help. must do all homework problems and read text closely. expects students to read BEFORE class. tests are difficult if not prepared by the homework and reading.
First off if you expect to find a chemistry professor that will be easy your wrong, come on its chemistry. Bro.Dabell has a good sense of humor and loves what he does. He carefully covers everything that will be on the final. He taught so that I could learn alote from class, but you must do the reading. He doesn't want you to fail at all like some.
I made a comment about Bro. Dabell back in 06 and feel bad because he actually was a good teacher. I didn't do the work and suffered because of it. saw him on campus and feel bad for what I said. He's probably one of the smartest chemistry teachers we have here.
His class and his test is hard and I finished differential equation with A and its my first Chemistry class. I was getting a C in his class at the beginning but I kept studing and ask him the questions that i don't understand it. Never feel stupid to ask because the grade is yours!! He been helping me alot and now i am having A-.His class is fun.
He is absolutely HILARIOUS! If the class doesn't understand the material he will reiterate the point until everyone understands. He sincerely cares about his students. You HAVE to put in the work to pass this class. Everyone who gave a bad rating probably didn't study very hard. Before I took DaBell I had almost failed this class. Now I got a B+!
Well going from collins in 105 to Dabell in 106 is like night and day Dabell just can't teach. He is really smart but expects the students to know things without really explaining it.If you can take someone else otherwise plan on taking it twice if you need a good grade.
He is a good teacher. There are better books for physical chemistry out there.
Really a great teacher, very nerdy yet also very approachable. Clear when working problems in class and has an organized hw & class schedule. Stick it out and work hard & you'll do fine. Don't be afraid to ask questions and joke too! He's fun :). Highly recommend studying in groups for his tests too.
Daebell is super smart guy but sometimes has a hard time teaching the basics. He would get frustrated when I would ask him simple questions and I always felt like I was interrupting him during his office hours. He makes you feel really dumb at times.
I never thought I would laugh at chemistry jokes, but by the end of the semester, I was making them up myself. You have to work your butt off to get a good grade(I was in his office pretty much after every lab and I was in a study group). DON'T BE AFRAID to ask questions or even joke with him.
He thinks highly of himself due to how smart he is, which can be very demeaning. I felt like this got in the way of helping me understand the material. When I took him, he quizzed us on material that we had not gone over in class yet figuring that we should have studied it prior to coming to class. He seems nice until he deems you less intelligent.
He is the worst teacher I have had. He doesn't teach, he expects you to already know what he is talking about. His tests are crazy difficult, and I feel like he doesn't prepare you for them one bit.
He is nerdy, passionate about Chemistry, but also very patient with questions in class - ASK QUESTIONS! If you don't know what he's talking about, TELL HIM! If you're working hard to get a good grade AND TRYING to enjoy chemistry, he will go out of his way to help. Tests require you to use many Chemistry principles to solve questions, and are tough
He's definitely a nerd and knows his stuff, but is expects everyone to have already taken chemistry at some point in there life so he doesn't go over basics. You HAVE to read EVERY DAY if you expect to pass this class with a good grade.
He's a fun nice guy. He Loves chemistry and shows in his excitement. He doesn't teach at a level that the majority of students can understand without other help like a tutor. When questions are asked he is very condescending. I wouldn't recommend taking his class unless you have a firm understanding of chemistry already. HIS TESTS ARE HARD!
Very difficult class. Homework is easy, but has little effect on the grade and does little to help with tests. Very smart teacher, but you have to read every day for a good grade. Class averages on tests were around 50-60%, so be prepared to study
I have never been so challenged in my entire life, but I have also never felt so rewarded. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take him. but if you want to learn and be prepared for the DAT or MCAT, take from him.
I learned a lot in brother Dabell's class because of the difficulty of the course. He prepares you very well for the national final. If you can get A's on his tests the final should be a breeze. I never really used the free online text book that much, I did take good notes and studied the hints on sapling and ended up with an A in the class.
He is a really nice guy, but his understanding of Chemistry and Math are so natural that he struggles (at best) to explain things to others. That is assuming he tries and doesn't just assume you already know him. Chem minor and hardest class I have ever taken. Wouldn't recommend him ever.
Don't take his class! He is a great guy but a terrible teacher!!! If you want to learn chemistry without a teacher and from a book, this is the class for you.
Br. DaBell was the most difficult professor that I've ever had; however, I have never left a course having learned more. He's tough, but he's fair. If you really want to have the material in this course stick with you for life, then take it from Ryan DaBell. Otherwise, waste your time somewhere else. Read the text, attend class, and do the homework
I'm fixing to take Br. DaBell for my fourth and fifth times. I've already left a more detailed review for CHEM105 that's applicable to all his courses. He's tough, but fair. You'll really learn the material better than with anyone else if you put in the effort.
Bro. Dabell is the worst teacher I have ever had. If you have any self confidence dont take this class from him he is condesending and makes you feel stupid cause he expects you to know everything already. If you want to self teach yourself Chem 105 then take this class from him. But if you are a nerd you will love him.
I used to be a happy confident person until i took this class from bro dabell. He way too smart to be teaching so if you are not a nerd then everything he says will be way over your head. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM. Any other teacher would be better. Do yourself a favor and take 105 from someone who will actually teach you.
Did not grade for what he taught in class, but how well U learn the material and then apply it. He gives daily objectives to learn, many of them are not covered in class but tested in detail. For example a question that only 5% of all of his students got right he keeps, because he openly tests your cleverness, he is not responsible 4 Ur learning.
Honestly, it's a tough class no matter who you take. Out of all my chemistry classes over the years, he's been one of my favorite teachers. I'd recommend him as one of the better 106 teachers.
He is a good Teacher to review what you learn in the book he isn't responsible for you learning the material just understanding it and guiding you. If you don't read the book you will be screwed regardless. If you don't like Chemistry and have to take a lot of it you will learn if you are in the right Major.
Brother Dabell is a wicked smart, amazing, hilarious teacher. I wish there were more classes I could take from him. Definitely do the readings, your assigned HW, as well as review questions from the book to get a good grade. He allowed us to attend events for extra credit, as well as a practice test as an exam grade replacement. He helps out a lot.
Bro. DaBell is a great guy and an awesome teacher. He really makes you learn the material. Those of us who kept with the class even after getting F's and D's on the exams made it to the ACS final and crushed it, did way better than the other teacher's classes. He helps out with curves on the test and he gives opportunities to make up the points.
Brother Dabell is a nice guy and he'll help you out in his office, but he is SO confusing. He doesn't explain the material clearly at all and treats it as if it's review. He makes his own test, which are incredibly hard and don't look anything like the homework that we do. He's all about advanced application before even understanding the basics.
Brother Dabell is great! New policy - chem105 tests are the same across the department. The tests are difficult, but it's not from him alone. He's funny, easy to understand, and engaging. Cares a lot. Focuses on ACS final material. Do the work and the standardized ACS final will be comparatively easy. Grades final by national percentile. Worth it.
I've had Brother Dabell for Chem 105 & 106. I have a learning disability & he has always worked with me when it comes to extending due dates for assignments and exams. He has a new policy with the homework which has been really helpful. Reading quizzes due before each class. Exams have 3 parts: multiple choice, write-on, and in-class group retake
He's not a bad guy, he's actually pretty nice for the most part. However his incredible intellect leaves him unable to explain the basics and the hardest part of Chemistry is the mathematics. Since he can't grasp how to teach or explain that, he pretty well sucks as an instructor. It's a hard class no matter what but other teachers are better.
I really enjoyed him. Chemistry is a tough subject and his teaching style is in a lecture format and shouts often, which I thought was funny. He will prepare you for the ACS Final. He is one of the harder teachers due to his tests and his expectations, but you will leave his class with a deeper understanding of chemistry than others. Worth it
This is a hard course no matter what. Dr. Dabell is a kind, funny, caring teacher and always made himself available to help me. I learned how to really study from him. If you take the time to study and do your part, this course will prepare you for ACS test and grad school well. It was the best class I've taken, definitely recommend Dr. Dabell!
Bro. DaBell is the bomb! He makes you work of course, but so do others. I took 105 from him and loved him, he is always available to help and really cared about my learning. There are a lot of materials to learn, its super busy, but if you follow his reading schedules and homework, youll learn a ton and do great! He helped me to love chemistry!
My favorite teacher I've ever had. Wish I could have him as a teacher again. He is hilarious and helps you remember difficult concepts through his jokes and funny stories. His class is still very difficult and it took a lot of work to get an A, but it is completely possible. He is a great teacher and is so willing to help you.
It's a hard class, there's really no way to make the class easier but Brother Dabell gives his lectures in a clear and concise way with little to no fluff or going into tangents that don't matter.
Very enthusiastic. Fun to talk to. Exceptionally good at answering students' questions. The unit exam heavily requires critical thinking. Before class reading is critical.
Brother Dabell is really good and very funny. He is very very very caring and wants you to visit outside of class, if you don't have a lot of free time to see him, don't take him!!!! He is a great chemist and knows what he is doing, and sometimes doesn't realize how complex he is.
One of my favorite teachers. He explains difficult things very well, is very patient and has a good sense of humor. His grades are very fair and if you participate and do your homework, you will do fine in his class.
Tough class, great teacher
I dont know if this is just cause its online or what, but I didnt see him as a professor. He was a group work facilitator. He just talks for 5 minutes at the beginning of class and then you work on a worksheet with your group for the rest of class. Every. Single. Day. Have fun teaching yourself chem 106
by far one of the most difficult classes ever. I am not good at Chemistry and the pandemic situation didn't help with my learning either. He is very knowledgable but you could tell he was new at remote teaching. Which is fine, just reach out to him and do your best to stay on top of things. You learn material by yourself outside class and review in
Class is basically him talking for 5 minutes and then he sends you into groups where you do group work the entire class. This works for some people, but I prefer being lectured. I basically had to teach myself everything. Brother Dabell is funny and knows his stuff, his teaching style just isn't for people who struggle with Chemistry.
I have retaken Chemistry three times, and he is by far the hardest teacher out of the three. He thinks class already knows what they are doing. He hardly teaches for more than five minutes. You will be teaching yourself in his class. Not worth the tuition money if you ask me.
I would really try to avoid this guy. Chem 105 is a really tough class and it is only made harder by taking it from Bro. Dabell. Maybe once covid restrictions are gone and he can teach on campus again it won't be as bad, but this guy put forth no effort to learn how to teach on zoom. He does not prepare you for the test well either.
Prof. Dabell is one of those professors who you avoid because he treats you like an expert and does not teach you. His chem writing class was awful, he was a tough grader while explaining very little of it in the general scheme. You want help? Get ready to listen to boring and quite frankly mostly unhelpful rants! I would avoid if possible.
I love Brother Dabell! I know some people complain because there isn't much teaching in the class but that is because Chemistry is always about practicing on your own. It is a tough class but Brother Dabell is caring and wants his students to succeed. He also helps by allowing your practice final exam score to replace your lowest scoring exam.
Brother Dabell assumes you already have a very broad understanding of chemistry. The way he has his class setup is he gives quizzes for the first five minutes of class, then has you do a homework sheet for the rest of class. There is no lecture, and he doesnt explain anything. The most unorganized class I have ever taken and his test avg are 60-75%
Horrible horrible horrible. Taught once at the beginning of the semester about the coronavirus and then never again the rest of the semester. Very lazy and does not care about you.
Look, he is a super knowledgeable guy, but that doesn't make the cut. Imagine a class that is online but isn't online where the expectations are you get one lecture at the beginning of the semester (on covid) and are expected to learn and teach yourself everything outside of class. Exams are brutal. Never felt prepared. Unless it changes, just no!
This is already a very difficult class that I did not want to take, and the way the class was set up made it so much worse. You basically have to learn the material on your own, and all homework is group work, but the tests are not. Retaking the class from another teacher who can actually teach and it is so much better. Don't take from him.
Avoid this teacher, Take brother heywood. Brother dabell just isnt with it. teaching style is outdated, difficult to follow. you will be taking hard courses with this one, do yourself a favor and get a teacher who gives you the information you need. All chemistry teachers (minus dabell) will tell you to avoid straight reading from the textbook
Brother Dabell's teaching style is different from other professors, and that's why I loved his class. Be warned, YOU will have to come to class prepared every time, but if you do, you will learn the content better by the way his class is set up than by other traditional lecture methods. He's very accessible and wants the students to succeed.
Very arrogant, & made students feel stupid for asking simple questions. A good teacher is happy to answer clarifying questions if that means that it will help the student. You will hear the phrase "what did the packet say", even though the packets are poorly written & require clarification. Always ask the TA, because they will be far nicer to you.
I was disappointed by the lack of guidance provided in this course. The lectures provide no helpful information and there are daily worksheets that you work through with an assigned group. Did well on the Proctorio tests, but did not learn anything in-depth. It's easy to pass, but he doesn't teach. Office hours weren't super helpful either.
Worst teacher I have ever had at BYUI. He does a "reverse classroom" where essentially you are supposed to learn everything outside of class and review it in class. It seems pointless to come to the lecture. Not to mention that he is not sympathetic at all, he tends to raise his voice when students ask questions.
Brother Dabell is a great teacher!! At the same time, he is not there to hold your hand and walk you through each step of the course - you have to put in the work and come prepared. If you do this, each class will perfect your understanding and you'll be rock solid for the tests. He is great at answering questions in his own, professional way.
I dont care what the other ones say about this professor being a good professor HE IS NOT! This professor is awful. His class is set up where HE DOES NOT TEACH! HIS VIDEOS DO NOT TEACH! He sets a timer in class and you and your group have to figure it out, you dont get to choose your groups. It is a reversed class he doesn't teach. NO LECTURES!
Taking chem from DaBell is like trying to have an autistic kid teach you about Crayola products. They know so much about their topic, but have no clue how to teach the content. Class is a joke. His "group work" centered learning model, in actuality, is the blind leading the blind. Chem is hard, DaBell makes it harder. Good luck teaching yourself.
Bro. Dabell is a great teacher and made Chem 105 a breeze. His class is set up where you will work through problems in a group and then as as class and he will spend the whole class period helping you work through problems. Since the exams are meant to be retaken multiple times I found this style of teaching to be more helpful then say a lecture.
Brother Dabell is amazing. His teaching style is intended to not only help you learn chemistry, but also to help you retain the information, and prepare you to perform well in the real world. If you're looking for a class you can coast through with minimal effort, this ain't it. But if you want to actually learn chemistry, take a class from him!
Bro. Dabell is a very hard teacher. His "reverse classroom" is very inefficient. He has you read straight from the textbook at home and class time is spent working on practice problems with your group. He does not teach or lecture at all, making it super hard to actually learn. Chem 105 is a hard class and he doesn't do anything to make it easier.
You teach yourself the whole course. He assumes you already know chem. Asking questions results in him loudly repeating them in a demeaning way. I almost failed again despite retaking it. He refused accommodations, and office hours didn't help. The $50 homework is harder than classwork, and you risk a low grade if you get stuck.Awful experience.
He definitely knows his stuff, but isn't the best at teaching it. Sometimes you'll ask a question, and you'll always get an answer, but you might feel dumb in the process.
Bro. Dabell definately knows his stuff, but if you don't get along with his teaching style it can be challenging since I feel like he's not great at explaining in other words if you ask him to clarify, he just repeats what he's already said.
He will not teach you about chemistry, he will assign reading and only do group work in class. If it's between his class and taking it online, take it online.
