Attention is not require, but he'll give out pop quizzes so you have to go to class. He is somewhat ignorance but passion about accounting. He tries to be funny in class but it's kinda dry. His tests are online. There's one long project. HW is also online.
Good professor, I found his 'dry' sense of humor quite entertaining. Not difficult, average amount of homework and pop quizzes every once in a while. Exams are all on MyAccountingLab (online). Overall I'd definitely recommend him.
He constantly makes stupid jokes, he uses book provided power point that makes understanding unclear. All work is online except quizzes where the answers can be found in the quick check portion of the book, the class is not too hard but if the goal is to learn do not take this class
Very good professor! Work was online and very helpful during office hours.
Pretty good. He's funny and chill but you have to read the textbook to do the hw. Lectures are mainly showing you how to fill in certain tables or calculations, but it's still helpful.
His lectures aren't very useful to the homework or tests but he's always available for help in his office hours. It's easy to get 100% on the HW and tests are online so it's easy to use your book etc. He does pop quizzes so you do need to come to class all answers are in the multiple choice section at the end of the chapter.
Definitely keeps class interesting. All the exams are online.
This is a case of a person who knows his subject so well he can not teach it to people learning. He is very unorganized and it is hard to keep up when he is going on his random rants about the material in the chapter we are supposed to be going over.
I was so worried that this class was going to be terrible but he really made the material easy to understand. You have to read the book in order to do well in the class because he lectures based off what the book covered. All the tests and homework is online which is really nice. Overall I really like the class, which is surprising! Dales rocks.
First of all, you have to pay like $60 (on top of the price of the book) for the online site where you do all of the homework and tests. He is terrible about responding to emails and his answers in class to student questions are not helpful. Everyone's always confused. You basically teach yourself. I would NOT recommend him.
Dales is the worst professor I've had a WWU thus far. He doesn't even know what he's teaching so you basically have to teach yourself. Terrible at explaining concepts and answering questions (because he doesn't know what he's talking about). Constantly discredits himself and has "meltdowns" in lecture.
Dales is pretty much a horrible teacher. He is only helpful in his office hours and even then he doesn't give great clarity. His grading style isn't fair. There is a final project for the class and half of the information in it isn't covered until the last 2 weeks of class. Book is more useful than class time but there are pop quizzes.
HORRIBLE PROFESSOR DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Homework does not correlate to lectures at all and he is condescending and useless during office hours. Try dearly to take this class with someone else and if you have trouble get a private tutor. He was very down on accounting and made it sound like a terrible field to go into. Worst class/prof at WWU
An awful professor. Nothing he talks about during lectures is really relevant to tests and homework. Also his jokes don't make the class any better.
Not a good prof at all. I took Dolar for 240 and he was very clear and organized, but this guy is condescending, and writes what we're supposed to know on an overhead in messy handwriting instead of just using nice powerpoints. Unfortunately there aren't any good options for 245. He gives pop quizzes (they're in the book) so you have to go.
I really recommend taking this class from anyone other that Dales. The lecturers are scattered, written on the overhead in poor handwriting, and do not pertain to the tests. He is unhelpful and condescending when you ask a question. He realized that he gave us the wrong document for the final project 2 weeks before it was due and told us to restart
People are incredibly unfair to Dales on here. He really isn't a bad of a teacher, although his handwriting and lecture notes are pretty pathetic. People who hate his humor and attitude are the type who can't take a joke and try to bs him. Just go to class, shut up and listen. Overall not that bad for a required business major
His sense of humor is awesome it you're not a soft-hearted person. The material is easy to understand if you just glance over the book before class. Dales is awesome, many people give him a bad rep because they dont like his sense of humor/teaching style, but he is really a great person to know and you can learn a ton about accounting if you listen
His humor definitely takes some getting used to. Notes in class are helpful formulas. If you take notes in class then you can do the online hw without much trouble. Then if you take notes from the hw like more useful formulas and the methods you are using on the hw, the online exams will be a cakewalk since they are pretty much the same
Goes very fast when explaining, and he's frequently writing down the wrong formulas and numbers.
Dales is funny, he is a smart ass which I find refreshing. No he cant spell but who cares its accounting not English. Downside is all he talked about was football. He does work sheets which u are suppose to print out and bring. Its a lot of printing and they arnt overly helpful. He lets u leave early every day. But good professor.
awful teacher, not helpful, terrible spelling and handwriting. not a teacher i feel i'm learning anything from.
Overall I didn't really like this class because of Dales. He has a humor that takes getting use to as well as wasted time during class. Attendance isn't required but you should go because there are quizzes(from back of chapter). Everything else is online. The tests can be hard and a bit confusing so don't be surprised if you don't do great on them.
He focuses too much on his humor more than the class itself. This is a very difficult class and he went through the material way too fast and was not clear about it, he always went off on tangents instead of teaching us necessary information. Even though the tests and homework are online, it is difficult and his lectures don't line up with them.
Ryan is an awesome teacher. He is very nice, helpful, gives clear instructions, & has a good sense of humor. If you don't like to study, don't take his class! He expects students to be able to study, and put an effort into it. He replies fast to emails, and is always willing to set up office time to help students. Overall an A+++ teacher!
Worst professor ever! I read these ratings before hand and thought the class couldn't be too hard since I have received A's in all my other classes, but Dales wants his students to fail! He has a miserable outlook, and makes the class harder then needed. Take this class from someone else!!!
He's my second favorite professor.
I took Dales for Business statistics 205. He wants us to succeed but his lectures are such a confusing mess. All he does is write examples down on a sheet of paper, which is useless because you never see the paper again. His tests are super hard too.
Dales is a nice guy, but a frustrating teacher. Lectures go over some of the material, but not nearly enough. He doesn't seem to notice that most students don't get the material. Homework sessions are great—another lady comes in and covers each question in detail before it is turned in. It's hard not to get 100% on the homework. Tests are hard!
Tough material, and Dales didn't make it any easier. He rushed through lecture, did one or two examples, and then ended class early every day. He curved the second midterm but didn't mention it to the class. I only knew because I went to his office. He's a funny and interesting guy, but I don't think he really enjoys teaching.
Easily the worst class I've taken at Western. The teacher wasn't interested in the students' success. The tests had little to no relation to the material covered in the textbook, which provided no examples and only loose definitions. The lectures were vague and long, and ultimately provided little to no help on the tests either. Don't take him!
So basically, he was an easy teacher for ACCT 240. Pop quizzes are the most likely every class but if you read you'll be fine. I thought his witty personality made class fun. He is definitely a teacher willing to help, you just need to ask questions. Office hours really help with him.
Dales should not even be considered a teacher. His lectures are pointless and he likes to poke fun at individuals just to be funny. All homework assignments and exams are online because he is a lazy bum that doesn't like helping people and is only teaching so he can feed his family. He was even absent for three weeks (right before finals).
Dales is super sarcastic. This makes accounting much better. Some topics are a little more confusing, but overall his teaching style works. He might not enjoy teaching, but the reviews that state he is not good at it, are false. If the university didn't want him to teach, he wouldn't be teaching!
Dales is a light attitude teacher but he lacks the professionalism and enthusiasm for teaching. His guidelines are vague and he does not include much guidance for his projects but when you go into office hours he is helpful. The greatest downfall is that he was absent for class for almost a whole MONTH where we had a midterm and a final project.
Dales is a good guy, but not a good teacher. He makes class interesting only because he's funny. He jumps right into chapter 6 without going over any basic fundamentals of accounting so it is really confusing to start off with. Tests are online and are pretty tough. He was gone for a few weeks right before a midterm and the final project.
The people saying that jumping into ch 6 was difficult, are ridiculous. Dales teaches you the fundamentals of what makes the Accounting cycle first, which in the end helps tremendously. Awesome teacher, and these people that give him sour reviews either skipped, or failed the FINAL, which is IMPOSSIVBLE!!! DALES RULED
Online homeworkmidterms, inclass pop quizzes(in book), and final were easy. Taught myself a lot for the project and the acct. tutoring center was a lifesaver. Never skipped class, but it would have been more beneficial. Easy grader, bad prof, didn't learn much. Very unprofessional, doesn't have PhD. Don't take him unless it's your last resort.
Worst professor I have ever had in my three years here. Does not enjoy or excel at teaching. Cannot explain concepts for the life of him. If you MUST take a class with him, just don't go to lecture (except he gives tons of quizzes so you have to) or once you're there don't listen to him or it will confuse you. Read the textbook and teach yourself.
He hardly teaches you anything yet expects you to complete the horrendous project that is worth a significant part of your grade, combining all the concepts he neglected to explain. He reads off of slides created by other professors and is unable to explain things thoroughly and effectively. I would never recommend this class.
Absolute worst professor I have ever taken. His explanations are vague, he is horrible at conveying concepts to new students, and he glosses over material way too quickly. The class's overpriced book is a better teacher than he is. Avoid any class he's teaching like the plague. The plague is more pleasant than "learning" from this schmuck.
Accounting 240 is the hardest class I've ever taken. Dales is not a great professor. His lectures are super long and he just reads off of the power point slides. You learn little by being in class and would be better off just reading the book. Hard exams and extremely difficult final project. Find another prof if you can.
I would never recommend this class to anyone. Dales tries to be funny but his jokes aren't always good. He speeds through everything and makes students feel uncomfortable by asking questions. Definitely not a good intro class if you have never had an overview of accounting. Avoid it at all costs.
Darn. Ch 23 is tough. Read these first if you take this class with dales. great professor. Glad to have had him for 240 and 245
Had for 240 and 245. Tests online were easy. Do HW before and use help me solve this, write it down, and you will be fine for the tests. Final was extremely hard though. Not the most motivated teacher but you can figure most everything out on your own through slides and the book. Bring the handouts, they help a lot.
This class has a definite learning curve, once you understand the basics the rest of the class is a breeze. Problem is, Dales doesn't realize that, or he doesn't acknowledge it. He expects you to learn most of the material outside of class and then basically review it in class. Textbook was $300, but you really only need it like 4 times.
Dales is full of those bad jokes that are funny for some reason. At least a little homework every week, however I found reading the textbook very helpful. He knows a lot about accounting and the 2 hour lecture passes relatively easily. Always available for office hours and extremely helpful. Lots of really short quizzes (from the book hint hint)
Hard grader. Be prepared for a lot of work
He is the worst professor avoid at all costs.
Dales thinks he's funny. Unfortunately, this means you have less time in class to stumble through his confusing lectures. His knowledge of statistics can be shaky. He often mis-teaches concepts. Going to his office hours is very useful, he will help you, it just takes a while. If you can find another professor, do so.
I agree with other people's ratings that there is a steep learning curve with his class. The material offered was not difficult, but he wants it in a very specific way on tests. Use the textbook and it is 100% necessary to go to class. He gives a quiz pretty much every day.
Ryan Dales is funny sometimes, but he gets really offended when: students leave class early or don't come to class, and when students don't answer his questions or interact with him. He basically expects you to learn everything outside of class and review it during his class. I mainly go because there's quizzes almost everyday. Mehhh.
I will be taking Dales again in the winter for 245. He is a very awkwardly funny guy who encourages participation in class, and will help you with EVERYTHING if you go to his office hours! Just an FYI his pop quizzes come right out of the back of the chapter.. I wish I knew this at the beginning of class. Do the homework, take notes and participate
He's pretty awkward and cool, but can be confusing unless you ask questions. Can be a tough grader. Expects you to read chapters before the next class, and do it, super helpful. Tough class. Pretty helpful if you go to his office hours, but definitely would not have him again.
Ryan Dales was my least favorite teacher I've encountered at Western. He's not helpful at all, his tests are incredibly hard, and he's completely unclear on what's required of you. His grading criteria was ridiculously unfair as well. He killed your grade on tests for the smallest mistakes. Dales was arrogant and infuriating, DO NOT TAKE
Absolute worst teacher I have ever had in my entire life. I feel ashamed to be at a school such as Western that will allow someone like this to teach. He teaches as many classes as possible to max his income. During a quarter he will teach at both whatcom and western. He doesn't even show up to his own office hours. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS.
Be warned that the tests consist of creating entire financial statements and other things from memory . You will need to reproduce entire balance sheets, long journal entries, t accounts, statement of cash flows. He will not give clues of how best to study for this; you had best memorize everything and be a professional accountant already.
MUST STUDY THE BOOK ON YOUR OWN. If you go in during office hours, you get all the help you need. I got 100% on all exams and the project from communicating with him consistently. Many of my classmates refused to participate in class making his life harder as well as annoying the better students in this class. Loved Ryan, will take 245 with him.
Glad I didn't read these reviews before taking his class. He's pretty effing good at making acct palatable. Goes through lots of examples in class, always happy to answer questions, learns students names, he says to read the chapter summaries, NOT the whole chapters. And... of course you have to do some studying outside class. cuz college. Jesus.
This class was among the hardest I've taken at Western so far. His tests are not handed back or gone over. The homework is graded as if a test. The teacher has a very large project that takes weeks of work and asking questions. His teaching method involves having students ask him questions on the chapter. There is a much easier class with Liu.
He is really funny but I do not know how this guy is a teacher. His style consists of us reading the textbook on our own and then asking questions in class. No power points to help us at all. I basically taught myself the entire course. Do not take this guy if you do not have to.
These reviews are undeservedly nasty, and in my opinion it's the class and not Dales. He has a straight-forward, no B.S, and funny personality. He acknowledges the toughness, but really does his best within his perimeters to help students out. You will need to put in 10+ hours in a week. GO to his office hours and tutor center.
Ryan Dales definitely knows what he's talking about but doesn't know how to teach it in an effective way. Accounting is a difficult subject all around but Dales doesn't really make it any easier. Tests are pretty difficult and the class all around is very time consuming but Dales answers any questions you have and does an ok job there. Good Luck!
Dales is a funny guy but you will have to put a lot of work into this class to receive a good grade. The textbook is very necessary. Classes are enjoyable but like I said earlier, be ready to work hard.
First of all by any means do NOT take this class! You will regret it. This guy doesn't care about teaching the subject at all whatsoever. Tests are VERY hard and he's a very tough grader! He cancelled class TWICE for the second exam and not only did he not move the test back, he wasn't even willing to teach the chapters we missed. Take Liu Zenghai!
DO NOT take this class if you get Dales. Do not make the mistake that I did by taking this class. Dales is a stain on Western's faculty, and hi enthusiasm for the class makes me sick, he is a very lazy teacher, so all your learning is done online through video assignments and book homework. Classes are going over the homework and taking a quiz.
He does NOT teach! I took accounting 245 with him, we came to class he asked if we had any questions on the topic he would be "teaching" that day, he would then proceed to give us a few minutes to do a handout and then just blurt the answers out after our few minutes of work time and then give us a quiz on the chapter. Be prepared to teach yourself
Let me just say this: Dales is the worst professor I have ever had. Period. How is this guy even a professor? Look, I know what you're thinking, "He can't be that bad, can he? I'll make it through the quarter with him." That's what I thought but listen to these reviews! I was originally an accounting major until I took his class.. he's worthless.
Interesting professor wouldn't recommend him at all though. He can be funny and make jokes but I'm not there to laugh I'm there to learn. Doesn't seem to care of the success of his students. Wish I took the other accounting professor honestly this guy is just not very good at teaching accounting. Pretty much had to teach myself accounting overall.
Want your GPA to drop? Professor who doesn't care? A professor who won't help you at all? A professor who doesn't reschedule exams when he cancels class TWICE and doesn't offer help? A professor who doesn't curve exams, when 80% of the class got a 60 on a exam he didn't help teach? Then leave no more, take him if that's what you are looking for!
The course is hard, and his humor leaves something to be desired. However, if you follow his advice from the start of the quarter you will be set. Be prepared to work outside of class time.
He knows a lot about accounting, but he annoyed me more than any other teacher. He is just annoying. He gives help if you ask, and gives a reasonable amount of homework. There were two midterms and one project. Book homework was only 5% of your grade (thank god). The book was very helpful, we had to do flashcards and pretty simple homework online.
Worst accounting teacher alive. Do not pay money to let this man "Teach" or "instruct" you. He's lazy, INSANELY slow at responding(doesn't half of the time) and couldn't care less about his students grades/futures. If you need to take an accounting class, do not take Ryan Dales.
Please do not take him. He's not a very good teacher, because he doesn't actually teach the material. It is all self taught. The group project is horrible, you have to create all the financial statements, which would be easy but he throws a million curveballs in the project. There are quizzes everyday, they're the end of chapter quizzes in the book
Please do yourself a favor and do not take him. He is pretty lazy and seems to put little effort into his teaching. Be prepared to self teach and advocate for yourself at his office hours if you want a good grade.
This class wasn't bad! I took 240 with Dales and then 245, and while 245 is better I didn't hate 240 with him. The project and exams are hard but if you spend time in his office hours he is happy to help with any questions and sometimes gives hints about how to study the best for the exams.
You ask him the questions, he is the encyclopedia of accounting. With that, he is on the edgy side of instructors. I think he is witty and has a good sense of humor, but I think he falls short in understanding his students, therefore falling short as a TEACHER not an accountant. His teaching style does not foster an enthusiastic classroom for acct.
Way harder than the other professors. Be present in class every day or you won't pass the daily quizzes. Start the final project early or you're in for an awful last week. Spends the class time blurting out answers. He's helpful outside of class if you ask the right questions, but he's terrible at understanding his students' needs.
Dales' sense of humor is a little harsh for people with thin skin, but if you can handle getting roasted he's hilarious. Homework is online and easy for the most part, and helps prepare you for the tests. He doesn't teach much material (you learn it from online video lectures) but he'll review anything that anyone needs to be reviewed.
Dales is the only teacher I have ever had a legitimate personal issue with. I felt equally prepared for both midterms and got a 98 on the first and a 58 on the second. He is also the kind of teacher that doesn't give anything back to you for fear of actually having to rewrite a test. Also the final project is hell. Spent 24 hours on it, got a 50%
Honestly this class had my edges snatched of my hair! It was pretty stressful for the most part but make connections with past students in order to get an A. He keeps exams the same from past quarters and the quizzes are all in the back of the book! The final project can get pretty stressful at times. Use class handouts to study for exams.
Too have this professor as the first face of Accounting for WWU is aweful. He's really stuck to himself. His grading is clear, but you basically have to figure everything out on your own just to pass. He doesn't answer questions in class. Just horrible. This class actually discouraged me so much that I switched my major.
The first day of class he showed everyone the terrible comments about him on ratemyprofessors and laughed. Get out while you have the chance.
ryan d. has a different sense of humor.. meaning that its very dry and sarcastic so if you have thin skin dont take this prof. he is very willing to work with students as long as you(the student)make the effort to ask questions and go to him if you need extra attention. the class is a lot of work but the material is fun if you when you get it
I came into the class with the lowest expectations possible. He definitely has a reputation and lives up to it. You will need to teach yourself all the materials from online videos, do homework before you go over tougher parts in class, and go to every class for the quizzes. I didn't mind his personality but was very happy to be done with ACCT 240
This guy has a reputation around Western for sure. But I've really enjoyed his class, I really appreciate his sense of humor as well. You'll do fine if you just pay attention to the online lectures. I'm thinking about minoring in accounting thanks to this class.
I was pleasantly surprised that I didn't hate Ryan after this class. It was extremely challenging but I enjoyed it, and I thought the way the class was set up was actually effective with the online videos and daily quizzes. The quizzes are the chapter quizzes in the book. The project was HARD but start early and he'll check all your numbers!!
If you want a teacher who mocks students when they don't understand material they haven't been taught yet, a teacher who counts down the minutes until class is over more than the student does, a teacher who makes homework due BEFORE he teaches it, a teacher who CLEARLY has better things to do with his "valuable time", then take Dales. *Mic Dropped
Get out of this class while you have the chance.
This is one of the hardest classes I've taken. That being said, I feel like I've learned the most I have ever learned in a class . Yeah, its a lot of work but that's because Professor Dales wants you to actually understand the material and get feedback. I highly recommend taking Acct w/ Dales if you actually want to know what you're talking about.
I went to every class, took notes for all the online videos and did fairly well on the quizzes and still had a horrible time with the project and tests. Got a D on the first midterm because of small formatting mistakes, even though everything ended up balancing out. The class got worse after that and even harder. Would not recommend him AT ALL.
Everybody hates on Dales because his class is VERY challenging but I enjoyed it overall. You have to put it in lots of time and effort into his class if you want to do well in it. The grades are balanced out pretty well so make sure you do all of the small assignments because it adds up. Exams are difficult but quizzes are easy. Go to class too.
Dales isn't as bad as everyone says. What makes his course challenging is that you need to take initiative in regards to studying on your own and truly learning the material. My advice: Start the final project as early as you can and bring it by his office hours! Also, don't skip class because there is a quiz every period.
If you are looking at getting into the business program I would recommend taking his class because even though the work seems extensive, it is the best way of understanding Accounting from the beginning. Basically you'll see anyone that doesn't appreciate his teaching methods is lazy. And the weekly quizzes are in the back of the book.
Please, if you have the chance, take this class with any other professor than Dales. Dales is the villain of the Business program, and if you talk to any Business major they will relive horrible stories. Most unnecessarily difficult class I've ever taken. The project is ridiculous, the tests are impossible. DROP THIS CLASS ASAP!
Ryan Dales means well, but is a terrible ACCT professor. The fact that he reads these ratings out loud during class and thinks they're funny is why he should not be teaching this course. He simply speeds through the material as if students are supposed to know it. Absolutely avoid taking him at all costs. I hope you read this one out loud Dales.
Ryan Dales is very straight forward. He makes it known what you need to do. It's really not that bad of a class and i'm always surprised that people talk so negatively about him. If you come to class, do your homework, and start on the group project early, ask for help, It's an easy class. There's a lot of work so time management is important.
Sets clear expectations of students that are not unreachable. Do the work, get a good grade. Skip class, you probably will fail. Available for extra help consistently.
Be ready to self teach yourself the course. The final project is a nightmare so start early. I would not recommend this professor. The way he grades the book homework is kind of harsh even if you attempt to do the homework you could still lose all your homework points if he calls on you and you don't have a certain problem.
Dales runs a tough class but you can succeed if you work hard. Never skip class, do your homework, go to office hours, follow directions, start early on the final project. He will tell you what to expect on the exams if you ask him, and it's always the majority of the test. Quizzes he gives you in class can be found in the back of each chapter.
Mr. Dales has a reputation around campus that isnt entirely fair. His class is difficult, but theres plenty of opportunities to succeed. You can still pass his class even if you are a terrible test taker, but be prepared to work for it. Ryan does a great job of making dry material kind of fun. Now that its over, I recommend him completely.
Class success relies on your way of learning. Student questions drive lecture. Exams: you memorize the content, using a blank paper to answer, essentially creating financial statements based off a paragraph. Get a group for project, it's a letter grade. If multiple choice exams are your suit, take Li, Shuo. Watch online book videos, taking notes!
He's bad, doesn't teach in class. Gives us every thing that's already on text book. He is lazy and doesn't put a lot of effort in class. If you want to learn accounting, I recommend you to take any other professor but not him.
bruh, don't even think about of taking him as your professor. he just read and write his own stuff in class and give quizzes from textbook. he thinks he's funny but he actually not. there's not much respect to student. you don't even need to check on this website, just ask your friend who's business major. they will tell you to take someone else
If this is your only option for 240, just wait. Don't do it. You'll be teaching yourself everything from the textbook, listening to his sense of humor, and learning nothing about accounting. The final project was way too much, and half of the things that were on the project I had never seen in class, even though I went to every class.
Easier than his 240 course, and little studying required. Tests are now half multiple choice and easier. With little studying you can easily achieve 80+ scores on all of his exams.
Class is based on what people got wrong on the chapter quizzes. The text is fine and hw doable, but be prepared to lose all your daily hw points if you didn't understand a topic. He claims to want you to succeed but offers little to no help during office hours. Tests seems straightforward but are graded very harshly. Do the project with a partner.
If you take Accounting with Ryan Dales, don't expect to get a good grade. Exams are the only thing that have a say on your grade, he doesn't teach during his classes instead goes over homework and makes sure to make you feel awful if you get it wrong. Do your GPA and self esteem a favor - don't take this class.
He doesn't teach at all. He sits up at the front of the class and shames people for not doing homework. All of the actual lecture is done by the online videos. The professors wastes all 4 hours of class time every week and makes you make up for it out of class by watching videos and doing homework. Western really should evaluate this professor.
Bad teacher, spent huge ton of time doing final project and still got a terrible grade on it. Hard grader and extremely meticulous about it. I recommend taking an easier teacher if you want a decent grade.
Dales is a freaking piece of crap. His class has been the most difficult one I have taken here at western. Come to class prepared with homework because he will call on you and if you don't have the answer he will make you feel stupid. Too much emphasis on final project. VERY tough grader and exams are extensive. Take shou li if at all possible!!!!!
Yes dales class is tough, however if you invest into his class you will actually learn accounting saving a lot of headaches in future business classes. If you don't care all that much about learning accounts and just want a good grade take another teacher. Accounting is a tough subject and it takes work to learn.
Literally the worse class I've taken in university. Does NOT teach in class or answer questions EVER. Be prepared to teach yourself, on your own time AND work the entire quarter on a project that is nearly impossible and over the top. Tests are awful, hardly ever what he says they will be. Do yourself a favor and DON'T take this course.
Dales is one of the worst professors you will ever have. Does nothing but waste time picking on students in class when going over the homework and he gives no prep on exams. Wwu really needs to evaluate this professor on a regular basis because he is so bad! Take it with someone else or wait to save your gpa.
This class will teach you accounting really well. Intermediate Accounting I was really easy after taking Dales for 240/245. My only criticism is he's a bit grumpy and could be a bit friendlier, but if you want to get good at accounting it's worth taking. If you want an easy class then maybe take someone else though since it's a lot of work.
Dales is horrible. Just picks on students everyday in class and does not teach. He wastes time in class and then haves you watch online videos to make up for class time. He also gives no tips or preparation for exams. Take this class with someone else if you don't want to struggle the whole quarter.
Avoid this professor like the plague. Terrible teacher, picky grader, boring lectures. Sometimes bullies his students. Makes inappropriate jokes (about gender, race, etc) and thinks he's hilarious. If you take this class be prepared to feel uncomfortable. I withdrew out of his class and took it later with a different professor. Best decision ever
Avoid at all costs. The worst teacher I've ever had. Be prepared to teach yourself If you take this class with him. Rude to students and extremely unpleasant.
Very cool class if you want to be an accounting major and be tested on 300-400 level accounting courses. If you want to do a full audit for every test and final project (different from final exam), than this is the class for you. But not so much fun if you dont want that and there are other professors that teach accounting 240 material.
Dales teaching isnt to bad but he loves to embarrass and call our students in front of the entire class. He thinks hes funny but most of the time his jokes are rude. He goes through material VERY fast in class so you have to come to class having somewhat taught yourself the material to be able to keep up. Would not recommend him.
Horrible. Teaches the accounting forms in class and nothing else. Makes you learn half of the class with online videos. Disrespectful and is on power trip.
Probably one of the worst teachers Ive EVER had. He is rude, unhelpful, and just over all not good at teaching. Prepare to teach yourself and then be tested on 400 level accounting. If you ask a question he makes you feel stupid. His teaching consists of filling out forms in front of the class with no explanation, he assumes the book taught you.
I'm going to be real with you, I was a little scared going into this class since my roommate said he had him and hated his class. Despite that, I took it anyway. Dales is a pretty solid guy I gotta say. If you come to class and do the assignments you shouldn't have any issue. I currently have an A. He also makes it clear that he wants to help you.
Honestly this class was extremely tough. You will not pass if you do not work hard. However the work is well worth it and Ryan really prepares you for Accounting 240. He grades fairly and clearly states what he expects from his students. If you do not have a sense of humor you will struggle in his class. Sadly, come exam time I never felt prepared.
Great guy and wants all of his students to do well and be prepared for accounting if it's the major they choose. The hard work is just hard and he really hammers it in with his fairly teaching style in which you are supposed to be your own greatest resource. 10/10 I have a B and am proud of it.
I am passing his class headed into his final. Dales is good at teaching accounting, but an aweful person. He mocks students, makes inappropriate jokes, and even reports Rate My Professor reviews about himself that he doesn't like in front of the class. He assigns a horrendous project, a lot of homework, and causes so much unnecessary stress.
This class and the professor gave me anxiety. Prepare to spend three hours on homework.
Worst experience Ive ever had in a class. Dales doesnt teach, makes you teach yourself with the online material, gives tons of busy work every night, and hands out practice sheets in class like its high school. Exam questions are picked at random. Doesnt provide calculators on exam days. Rude to students. As said below, AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE!
Ryan Dales barely teaches us anything in class, lectures way too quickly and does not adequately prepare us for exams. All of the lecturing is done online by Connect. Oh and be prepared to spend LOTS of time on the project, which is pretty much all-or-nothing. i.e. if you get one number that is way off, you'll get a zero. Caused so much stress.
Dales is dope. If you're a softie and can't handle his humor then that's your problem. He is a good teacher, he goes a little quick but if you ask questions he will answer thoroughly. Half of your grade is just based on completion so you get that too. Just show up and pay attention and you will be fine.
Insensitive, mean, and unlikely to help with anything. By far the worst professor I've ever had. Don't take his class unless you love teachers that don't actually teach the material but still get angry at you when you don't understand the content.
Dales gets a bad rap with a lot of students at the CBE. I honestly didn't think he was that bad. I learned a lot about practical accounting concepts in this class. His sense of humor is very dry, and can be misinterpreted as apathetic or rude. Overall I took 245 with him, and after 240 with Dales, that class was cake.
Whatever you do, if you care for your GPA don't take him, it's not worth the cost of your sanity
honestly I would have a beer with Dales but i don't think i would take another class from him lol. i dropped the class because the online work is not how I learn and his lectures lack substance, but his humor is dry and he has no filter which, personally, that makes it more bearable. He's a funny guy but if you are easily offended dont take him
Dales gets a bad wrap but he really isn't a bad guy, he's just more old fashioned and thinks students should have to work hard. The most challenging bit is his tests because he gives you no info about format so it's a surprise every time. That said he was invested in the class all quarter and was happy and able to respond to most questions well.
Bro... accounting is supposed to be simple black and white addition and subtraction. Why is this so confusing then? Terrible prof, learned nothing.
Took Ryan Dales for 240, & took him for 245. Ryans personality is great and I think he is a solid person. HOWEVER Ryan should really learn how to teach/run a class. If he genuinely wanted his students to be successful his formats for the test would be clear and students would feel prepped come exam time. I was dumb to take a class with him again.
The final project Dales gives for this class is on the level of someone well into an accounting degree here at Western. This class will lower your gpa if you aren't on top of everything right away. Strongly would recommend waiting a quarter to take this class with someone else.
He's the teacher everyone know about without even mentioning their name and not in a good way. He does not know how to teach and is very frustrating. Thinks he's being funny when I'm trying to get a serious answer. Receiving the handouts in class are v helpful for the tests but not worth my sanity to sit through the rest of lecture.
One of the worst profs at wwu. He changes the formatting of the exams and doesn't tell you what to expect; some exams focused entirely on the math while others focused entirely on definitions. He doesn't teach you the material, he just gives worksheets and makes the online accounting software teach you instead.
Worst professor ever. Do not take him unless you want your gpa to drop
All I have to say is do NOT take this class with Dales. The project he assigns is something only a higher level accounting student can actually do. He doesn't actually teach the class other than just doing example problems, instead he expects you to teach yourself via textbook before every class. Overall the worst professor I have ever had.
Ryan is a good guy and very willing to help outside of class. However this was honestly the hardest class I've ever taken, due to the way he chooses to teach it. The project is extremely difficult and something that you basically have to teach yourself. Quizzes were based on questions from the back of the book which he didn't tell us until the end.
Dales will give you a lot of homework and he does not go over specific details about the work but rather you do worksheets in class. Many see this as a negative but in reality, it really helps you better understand the subject and see it used in a real-world situation. I recommend him if you want to actually learn about the subject he teaches.
His teaching style in this class is a lot more relaxed than in 240, and he hands out worksheets which we work on in groups during class. Homework is entirely online & you get unlimited attempts before the due date. However, for exam prep, study the concepts in the textbook as they comprise a good chunk of them on the test along with the math.
Well, Dales is better in ACCT245 than he was in 240. Homework is entirely online now and you get unlimited tries before due date, so no more being called on. But I wish he could at least tell us what to expect on exams beforehand, so on that note, be sure to study the concepts in the book along w/math. In all, teaching style could still be better.
Dales has been my favorite professor at WWU. The class is structured well to allow you to succeed if you want to put in the work. He has a dark sense of humor that makes the class very enjoyable. He is also very helpful in office hours if you ever need help understanding anything especially with the project.
He may not be as bad as many say, but the complaints aren't unwarranted. While he does occasionally give out good examples, this is pretty much a self-taught class that's far above the level of an entry-level course. Not to mention he is crass, rude and unprofessional. While he does prepare you for the major, I wouldn't recommend taking him for 240
This class was one of the most valuable business foundations classes I took at WWU. Dales is a tough professor, but if you go to class and reach out when you need help, youll do just fine. He values good, old-fashioned hard work and wants you to succeed. Also, he has an extremely dry and somewhat dark sense of humor, but that keeps it interesting.
Honestly, Dales isn't that bad. There was a couple times I forgot to do hw assignments and he was easy to get ahold of and always extended the assignment for me. I didn't do the best on tests and still passed the class easy.
245 is definitely better than 240 with him. In class he gives good examples and worksheets but expects you to learn everything else on your own. Homework is easy because you get unlimited tries. Reading each chapter is important because he doesn't cover anything really but the math part of accounting in class so tests are hard if you don't read.
*Taken online during COVID-19* - Dales basically put up recorded lecture videos, had a weekly quiz based on em, short Connect hw's, and tedious online flashcards from the text. Concepts weren't the easiest, and exams are on Connect so really not related to the lectures, but VERY similar to the practice exam. so know the practice one well.
TAKEN ONLINE. The first day of the quarter prof Dales posted all of the lectures/homework for each chapter. Everything (except for tests) were asynchronous. Each week you have to watch a few lectures, do the online homework, and a canvas quiz but you have unlimited opportunities on each. 2 midterms, 1 final. Solid class, just need to pace yourself.
I took this class online, and ultimately it was really independent and self paced. He posts lecture videos and had virtual office hrs, then you complete homework, flashcards, and a quiz (w/ unlimited attempts so it's not hard to get 100%). 3 exams w/ practice exams available. I think Dales is really funny and explained most of the material well.
COVID-19 Class. Synchronous. Ryan was great in lectures, he went over the week's material and was very helpful with answering questions. Relatable and funny guy. The accounting material was hard to grasp sometimes but he provides a lot of materials to learn from, and chances to learn. No Projects.
Not bad, provides a lot of material. It is hard to know what will be on the test. Attend the sync zoom lectures if your interested in accounting or if you want to debate him on whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. Gives you unlimited attempts on the hw quizzes and posts helpful handout videos.
Has a unique sense of humor. Provides material for class and weekly zoom meetings to assist students with any burning questions. Exams are based off of the textbook so be careful when studying, recommend using the tools provided in online textbook as exams are more than 50% of your grade.
Took Dales class in Spring during COVID, he was a pretty good teacher. Sync lectures were kind of a waste of time. Video that he posted were worth watching and do the homework! You have unlimited chances to do homework and quizzes. Tests are from the book and they are pretty challenging. You don't have to show up to class to pass.
Taken during COVID online. Not too bad. Weekly quizzes, homework, and guided reading/learnsmart assignments that you all get multiple attempts on so you can get 100%. The three exams were a bit challenging, but overall, not too awful. Make sure you take lots of notes from assignments and reading. Exams were given through McGraw Hill Connect.
You learn more from google and the textbook than lectures. Use the practice tests as only thing that really preps you for the test (worth a lot of your grade). Just kind of a get through it subject, he's not awful but not very inspired to learn. I also had him for 240 and is exact same, just happy to be done.
I love Prof. Dales as a person. He is truly hilarious. You mostly learn through the book as the lectures are more going through how to do journal entries. It’s a pretty easy class honestly but again that’s just my opinion. The course is through Mcgraw Hill and I hate their system…
Seemed like he completely hated teaching this class. After a few weeks I didn't put much effort into learning the material because of how depressing he made it feel. So I just scooted to a passing grade on homework points. Never took an accounting class again but I imagine there are much better options out there.
Ryan is a great professor and I plan to take him again for ACCT 245. Lectures were very practical & go over handouts, plenty of grades go into the book making it easy to pass. He has very dry humor which makes class more fun! I've actually changed my major because of this class, highly recommend.
I actually really enjoyed his class! he explains things clearly and class time is spent going through examples and not lecturing which is nice. He has a dry sense of humor and engages a lot with the class. There is a good amount of reading but It is manageable. The HW and Review days are important. Overall its a good class
A few key notes: -Know that your canvas grade does NOT reflect your REAL grades. -He's not much help with the material -The class isn't hard BUT if you are taking 3 other classes that are really hard, you might fall behind (especially because of his grading system). -Learn from outside resources, he's teaching was not a good fit for me.
Great teacher and very funny person. Participate in class and you will do fine, he goes over the exam math part during class basically in the review days so just go to the review days and the rest of the classes and class won't be hard. He is hard on you but if you're going to complain about that then go back to kindergarten.
Lectures go over what will be on the tests almost to the tee. If you do not understand the content, reading the textbook and doing extra problems is a must to understand and practice the content. Prof is good, only problem was it is a lot of work and reading for a 4 credit class.
Great instruction and guidance for accounting. Most of the studying can be completed outside of class. You should show up to the class portion of the course ready to practice the methods seen in the chapters rather than learn about the concepts of the chapters. Most of the chapter conceptual material is covered in useful videos on canvas.
Tests were online and proctored which made it faster because of the type of exam it is. The practice exam was rlly similar to the actual exam which I appreciate. Lectures were rlly interactive and helpful. I don't think you need to read the book if you practice enough with the practice exam and HW. The quizzes are online and infinite attempts.
He's a great professor. Very straight-forward and focused in his teaching style, while still being very interactive and super funny. The stuff you learn in class is exactly the type of stuff that is on the homework and exams. Show up to class and pay attention and its easy to get a good grade
handed out actual pieces of paper in class. all the material covered in the lectures was very helpful for exams. all exams were online at home, open note. homework was challenging but unlimited attempts to get 100%. lectures were long but helpful. for me, the second midterm was the hardest of all the exams.
Great professor, learning is very hands on and what's in class is exactly what's on the test.
Your assessments are a big chunk of your grade but if you participate in class then you don't have to worry about it. As long as you're able to go through what he gives you in class correctly you're golden. He's also super funny, he'd have my friend and I giggling all class with his jokes. Hoping to have him again, he's awesome.
I know his review is scary, but his teaching style worked for me. Everything is online, including the exams. He uses a form of honorlock for his exams, but you're not recorded, you just can't open other tabs. Attendance isn't mandatory, but he provides helpful examples in class.
This professor has a particular teaching style where he answers questions with questions. As a student, you will either thrive or struggle under this method. If you are fairly self-taught, then he will work alright. Most of the learning is from reading the textbooks, and the classes are a place to think critically of the material.
Toughest class I have ever taken, in over 3 years of college, for all the wrong reasons. Material is not taught during lectures, you are expected to "teach yourself" using the textbook without knowing what is actually going to be on the homework/exams. Specific, "sarcastic" teaching style that may work for some, but I did not enjoy. Please be real.
Worst professor I've had by far. Pretends to be a comedian instead of instructor. Makes class intentionally hard, seemingly to prove a point. Often rude, always standoffish. No midterm guide. Next to no online resources. More interested in proving how good at accounting he is than ensuring students understand concepts. Avoid at all costs.
This professor is the definition of "power trip." Students are encouraged to shout over one another to fight for participation points. Despite this, he may decide to not grant you participation on a whim. Participation is useless anyways. At the moment, we are being graded on our ability to make 15 paper airplanes in 10 minutes. Avoid at all costs.
Avoid. Made this class so unnecessarily hard. You have to teach yourself everything, class is just spent with him dryly filling out a worksheet based on him waiting for people in the class to shout out the answers for each step instead of actually.. you know.. teaching us?? Like you are paid to do??? He is also scary I will not lie.
By far the worst prof I've had at wwu. This man told a student to die in a fire and just made all these really uncomfortable "sarcastic" comments that lowkey were just bullying. If you have the option to take literally anyone else, choose them. On top of his awful personality class is just worksheets w/no instruction and exams have no study guide
Terrible professor. Avoid if possible. His class is self-taught, no slides or lectures, just worksheets. Tests are in-person with no aids allowed. He is abrasive and puts students down under the guise of humor. He's disrespectful and politically incorrect. He told one student to die in a fire. He also used the R slur then attempted to justify it.
The class was essentially self-taught from lack of clear instructions. Lectures: unstructured, off-topic. Providing no help with understanding the material. Homework: unrelated to lectures, exams, & making exam preparation impossible. Frequently belittled and degraded students, using slurs and bullying, created a hostile and toxic environment.
AVOID!!!!! Claimed he wanted us to succeed in his class; however, offered little to no instruction, no study guides for exams, and belittled students. If anyone else is teaching 245, take them instead. His class was nothing but worksheets, no explaining of concepts or slides. He's also sarcastic and not in a good way.
Wost teacher I have ever had at WWU. Lectures are nonexistentant. Literally paying to teach yourself the material. Gets mad at students for not understanding the material; maybe like teach for once. Exams are awful with no guide on the structure or what type of material to expect on it. Avoid him at all cost. Said a slur in class too. wow!
Goes through material pretty quickly. Because of this, you need to be sure to ask questions as soon as you get confused. Handouts are very useful. Doesn't give much feedback. Has a dry sense of humor but he really does mean well. All you can have for the exams is a calculator. Recently started teaching 331 and it shows a little.
Cases are assigned before you learn the subject, and they're due each class. Participation points come from discussing these cases, though the instructor often makes rude comments on incorrect answers despite not teaching the material. He also pits cross-class project groups against each other by withholding critical information.
The class is tough, but you can get through it with the textbook and unstuck study. The professor has a unique teaching style - he'll challenge you, so be ready to think critically.
shoutout to this guy for being such a bad teacher and running such a garbage class that i switched my major
Funny guy, but not a great teacher. Online textbook and video resources were more helpful than lectures
Lectures are long but interesting. He makes jokes and interacts with students which makes them enjoyable and go by fast. He's passionate about accounting and knows his stuff. Lecture involves worksheets and examples which are useful and teach the material well. Two short online assignments each week with textbook reading, 2 midterms, and a final.
Lectures were fun and he made jokes. 2 midterms and 1 final, and he provides a schedule on day one so you are prepared every time there is a test review due the night before and they are all multiple choice quizzes and homework are online and due on Fridays so they are easy
if you want a teacher that spends more of the class trying to get students to talk about if they like his (sometimes racist)jokes vs teaching material you should take him. tests on stuff he doesnt teach. this class drained me -he is also not helpful unless willing to go to office hours- not even clarifying question emails.
Ryan Dales is the WORST instructor I've ever had. He waits to grade tests until the last possible day he can and then is almost completely unavailable outside of class to talk about the score you received. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!! He made some unusual comments to the class and made some students feel more alienated than others.
I had Dales for ACCT 245 where he was my favorite professor. Unfortunately for this class his style isn't a good fit. He struggles to teach everything that is on the exam in a class that has a lot to learn. Lectures are just students figuring out problems while he poses leading questions. The grading on participation is inconsistent.
Dales is terrible. RUN!! His lectures are the students teaching him while expecting you to do all the learning before you come to class. He prepares no study guides but instead has a guided review and in his own words said "it does not prepare you for the exam." He also has jokes in the class which are often offensive and rude.
Dales had a generally pretty bad way of teaching. The tests are weighted low and very hard so they're almost designed to be failed and there's no incentive to learn anything, plus he's a very slow grader. There would also usually be multiple correct answers to questions but you had to guess which one he preferred, so studying didn't help much.
Whenever we would ask questions about the lectures, he would reply in a very rude manner. Didn't accommodate DAC. Not helpful, not kind, very intimidating, and passive-aggressive (especially if you ask for help).
Don't listen to these people, they're sheep. They're mad for nothing, they just don't know how to communicate with adults. Amazing professor.
Professor Dales is a good person. He is funny and his lectures are entertaining. The exams are hard but not impossible. The reason most people don't like him is because his class is so different. You are expected to actually study and put the work in.
Absolutely avoid taking any classes with this professor if possible. By far the worst professor I've yet to have at Western. He does not tell you what will be on any of the exams and if you ask, he brushes off your question or responds as vaguely as he possibly can. Also exam reviews do not correlate whatsoever to the content that is on the exams.
I'm a junior and this was the one class to ruin my 4.0. He is a good teacher and obviously knows his stuff but doesn't teach in any way that will help you on the homework and barely on the exam. Expects you to understand it comprehensively but doesn't fully teach that way. Do not skip class if you want to pass because he gives packets you need.
3 exams, two assignments a week, along with learning everything outside of class. His teaching style isn't for everybody and you'll learn that pretty quick. He expects you to learn on your own time and then be ready to apply that in class. Exams aren't always straight forward, the first exam's average grade was a 50%. Not taking him again.
I genuinely feel like i didn't learn anything i couldn't have learned by skimming through a textbook. Other than that, he was enjoyable to listen to, and I enjoyed the airplane game. He didn't teach much, so you're teaching yourself everything, aside from the occasional worksheet he'll go through. At least he grades easily.
Very abrasive and not helpful when someone answers incorrectly, yet spends half the class in awkward silence waiting for someone to participate. Also purposefully has the grade calculator on Canvas locked so you can't see your grade. Attendance isn't mandatory which is great because this class ruined my day and wasted my time every time I went.
Definitely on the odd side. Dales is pretty personable and humorous, but it was often unclear what we should expect on tests, and having our grades locked on canvas was annoying. I definitely learned, but his style of teaching was not what works with me.
This guy is funny but you will be teaching yourself. The class is not easy and your grade will be reflected by the work you put in. Give yourself enough time to learn and you'll be fine but lectures can be stale and hard to follow sometimes
His teaching style isn't for everyone, its very hands on in class, and you have to already mostly understand it. As long as you participate a lot in class and ask questions when you have them you should be fine, but if you don't understand it and don't ask questions, the class will be very hard for you.
This guy is unique. Hes chill but easily distracted. Sometimes he goes on rants about unrelated things and I feel the class could really benefit more if he stuck to teaching us as much information as possible. As I felt I was teaching myself more out of the textbook. Weekly online quiz and assignment and 3 scantron exams. Tho exams are very tricky.
Oh good god, this class sucked so bad. The professor is extremely vague on what he wants from you and 90% of the class time is students having to volunteer info. All the assignments (other than the massive group project) are excel based and therefore completely unhelpful for the paper exams. If professor Dales is your only option, good luck.
He has canceled class several times just minutes before it was supposed to start, without any prior notice. He's also been rude at times, and when I try to ask questions, he responds in a way that feels uncomfortable or unhelpful. Wouldn't take unless you have to.
Ryan Dales wants his students to learn, but his teaching methods are not very effective. During class, he'll unenthusiastically work through examples, which makes the material difficult to absorb. Ultimately, you'll have to teach yourself a lot of the material. He's also not very approachable, both in class and during his office hours.
Acct 331 is already tough, and taking Dales makes it worse. Most class time is spent waiting for students to guide the conversation, and you're expected to learn most of the content completely on your own. Exams are 70% of your grade, and neither the cases nor the “lectures” prepare you. Save your sanity and avoid Dales.
This course is extremely difficult & the only reason I grasped anything was Dales. He guides you through examples that are helpful, he does expect you to come to class w/ some knowledge but tells you exactly where to look in the textbook for it, if you don't like that style don't take him, but it's pretty typical of most college classes now I think
This class was not a pleasant experience. Dales barely teaches in lectures and expects you to teach yourself using the textbook. He is unkind and does not clearly communicate expectations. Exams are worth 70% of the grade, but you cannot have notes on any of them, and he does not curve grades. If this isn't your learning style, avoid at all costs.
One of the most anxiety inducing learning environments I've had the displeasure of partaking in. Attendance is mandatory and participation is forced. There were multiple occasions of feedback not matching the outlined project requirements, to the point that I became convinced he hadn't even read the case. I'm disappointed I didn't learn more
Avoid taking a class with Professor Dales. He regularly refutes information found in the textbook and is passive aggressive to students. I have never seen test score averages as low as I saw in his class. It genuinely feels like Professor Dales wants you to fail. For the sake of future accounting students, something needs to change.
I would never take a class with him again!! He doesnt reply to emails, gives no answers to questions, is rude and thinks he's funny, makes participation mandatory but the class environment is not inclusive of that. He has this big project that he doesn't explain at all. Never take this class with him unless you have no other choice!! tests are 70%
