Great teacher, really fun.
Great sense of humor
He's very funny and entertaining.
fun teacher. very funny. makes class interesting. good grader. enjoyed class
Ryan has a great sense of humor and his classroom was filled with a lot of laughter. I love to write and his class gave me the chance to write on some subjects dear to my heart.
Ryan has a great sense of humor, and his class was very enjoyable, except for the fact that he isn't very clear on the assignments. But he's a great comedian, and I don't think I could have stayed awake during that early morning class if he hadn't been. And he looks like Jack from LOST...a lot like him, it's really weird, but hot.
He's very funny and whimsical. I loved his class. Great teacher. I also took WR 123 with him. I recommend him specially during summer term.
He is a very funny teacher!
Great teacher! Hysterical! tough grader, and expects a lot, but will work with you to make your writing good. i loved his class, there is never a dull moment.
Funny as hell. He's a good guy, always entertaining. Likes to figuratively stand on a soapbox and preach (not religiously). He pretty much rocks. Most enjoyable Writing class ever!
He is very nice, funny, and although he tends to go on tangents (goatbabies and whatnot), he teaches the material effectively. I really enjoyed the class, and feel like I learned a lot.
Great Teacher, Very Funny, Great Class
I took the accelerated WR 121 class, it was an intense whirlwind of papers and writing. Overall, I think he is a great teacher. I enjoyed his lectures and humor. Although, sometimes I felt confused regarding some of the writing techniques used to write the papers. However, he allows rewrites which saved my grade.
He was funny, and we always had lively discussions in class, but he didn't teach a lot. So it was kind of hard to follow the class and get something out of it
Awesome teacher. Would take from him again. One of the few teachers that actually made coming to class enjoyable.
Very nice person, he makes the class fun and enjoyable. Not too stuffy, fun, i learned a great deal about writing.
Ryan Davis always made my class laugh til we almost peed our pants, he was very entertaining. But as far as teaching, he was okay. He could use a little more time explaining exactly what he wants in the papers, and he is a very hard grader.. so if you like a challenge, take his class. I loved going to class to have something to laugh at. :)
Very Funny! Makes class extremely entertaining, but you don't learn much. When it comes to teaching in class he's very unclear on what he's asking for in the assignments, but if you go to his office he is happy to help you. His assignments are pretty hard, so it's important to ask for clarification.
He was crude, not funny and I don't feel like I learned much from him.
Seriously the best teacher I have had this year! I am taking writing 121 and i LOVE this class! If you need to take a writing class make sure you take him!
I did not like my class from this guy. Half of the time his lectures were remissness of previous trips hes had and his assignments were never clear.
Ryan Davis is an amazing teacher. He made class entertaining and was always willing to help us in any way possible. He encouraged us to visit him during office hours to discuss our papers before they were due. Anyone who did so was guaranteed to get an A on that paper.
This guy made the class into some kind of talk show. No learning was to be had and all we did was talk every class, and he'd make some bad, tasteless jokes. He gave everyone A's on everything and never gave any kind of criticism at all on their papers. I really felt like I wasted my time every time I walked in the door to his classroom.
He is one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is funny and makes the class feel at ease. If you take anything that has to do with English or writing, take it from him. You won't regret it.
This man is awesome, such a great sense of humor and he has the ability to keep your attention while accually teaching you a ton. He has a wealth of information and is passionate at what he does. Teachers don't get much better that this. He is very insiring and funny as hell. Love him!
If you are the type of person, like myself, who believe the instructor can make or break your interest in the subject, then ryan's who you want teaching you. He's witty & clever & has helped me to look at the details of a bigger picture or problem. laughter is contagious in his classroom. AND HOT!
AWEFUL! Yes he's funny. Yes, he is witty.....but NOTHING gets graded in a timely manner. He does not return e-mails and it is apparent that he is lazy and doesn't really like his job.
I think Ryan is the BOMB! He is witty, friendly and knows his stuff. He does have a hard time getting grades back quickly, but he carries a full load of classes each term. WR246was a great class, you need to be on the same page with him to do well.
He made class fun to attend. I enjoyed it and got a lot out of it.
Ryan is an awesome teacher. I had him for writing 121 and he made the class fun and interesting. He also has a great sense of humor.
Very nice and helpful. Learned more in one class period then 4 years of high school.
Very funny. And very much into writing and literature.
Ryan is a fun teacher to have. I recommend him for anyone who has a bad time with other teachers because he's really easy to get on with. In order to fail his class you really have to try to. He wants the best for his students & he'll always help if you have questions. He is a jokester & very funny but he's also very professional. Take his classes!
Ryan Davis is an amazing teacher! He is super helpful. He is funny and laid back, while being compasssionate about writing. He is THE teacher to take for any writing class! Honestly, I'd take any class he taught in any subject. He's that good!
Ryan Davis was an awsome teacher. He made learning fun He is an extremely funny guy. His class wasn't easy by any means, but if you do the work, then he is more than fair. He was great, and I wish he taught the other classes I need.
Hard class, didn't learn much in it. But if you do your work right, you'll pass with an A no problem.
My friends recommended I take Davis' class, and honestly, Writing 121 was pretty easy. I missed at least 5 classes and still got an A. Everything you need is online. You just need to come in for the 3 workshops and to turn in your final essay and you're golden. He isn't very clear about assignments though. BUT, he is very hilarious and laid back!
Ryan was probably my favorite English teacher that I've had. I'm rather picky when it comes to that subject because it's my favorite, but all the material is online just so you don't have to buy a textbook. He's pretty leinent about assignments and he's always cracking jokes.
"He was crude, not funny and I don't feel like I learned much from him." was a quote from a previous reviewer. I agree completely: frequent uses of F-word, S-word, etc. I am an engineering, math, and computer science student, and I do not find any need to spend huge amounts of time contemplating what the author of a short story is thinking.
Its hard to rate Ryan because he really is a mixed bag. Yes he is funny but There was never enough writing. I felt like every day was a tangent, and my time was being wasted. I might as well just taken the class online because I only learned what was on his website and the notes written on my papers. his subjects were lazy as well. very high school
Ryan takes a different approach when it comes to writing class. He prefers to get you engaged in the process. Although he does go off on tangents during class he at least makes it amusing and worth the tangent for a laugh. I would recommend him and I hope he enjoys his year sabbatical.
Don't let his syllabus fool you, he's not as strict as he sounds through it. He's actually a cool guy, just communicate! He takes a long time to grade papers, which is about 80% of your grade so for awhile I was in the dark about my grade and how well I was doing. The material for this term was boring, hopefully he will pick better ones in the futu
He's a super cool dude and really cares about his students. He has fairly easy essay requirements, but the grading system is strict in regards to late and short papers. This is my first term so I can't say I recommend him above other teachers, but I though he was great! (And he doesn't reply to emails well so ask in class.)
Seriously the BEST writing teacher at CCC.
Ryan is a really great guy. He genuinely cares for the students and gives great feedback. He can be a bit slow to grade papers but it wasn't too bad. His humor is great and he is pretty real about life. We only had 12 people in the class so he really opened up to the class and made it a great experience.
The Best Writing teacher! He knows how to teach and gave good feedbacks on papers. He was really helpful in terms of helping with editing my papers.
Mr. Davis is awesome! He is so personable and is a very caring teacher. He does go on tangents, but it's not annoying (surprisingly). He is very frank and won't babysit you, but he also recognizes when students put in the work. His grading is fair, students who didn't try received a C or lower, those that put in effort received a B or A.
I really enjoyed him as an instructor. very laid back and exciting. I was very happy with him. and i will definitely be taking his future classes. The lectures are nice and the vibes are on point with him. :)
The Class itself was a very easy class. Just do the work asked of you and you'll do fine. Ryan as a teacher is great. His humor and laid back style makes him relate-able and very easy to work with. I wish I had taken his class for all my writing classes before. I would recommend.
One of the biggest problem was the timely grading of classwork. Over 80% wasn't graded until the last week. Another issue with him was that you had to check the syllabus through out the class for any changes. He tends to "update" assignments on his online syllabus. He is also difficult to reach for answers to questions.
Ryan is awesome! He is passionate about his work. I had him for a morning class and not even once did I even feel like falling asleep. He keeps you on your toes during lectures and discussions and is super funny. He can come off as confusing sometimes, but is actually a pretty easy grader. He's really good about meeting with you if you need it.
Ryan is a super laid back teacher. Makes class very interesting, and there is only a few assignments in the class total. Good grader, good feedback.
I took him my first term of college and was really amazed with how great he was. I HATE english, but found myself wanting to go to class just to be in his lecture. Very funny, understanding, and really tries to help. Would definitely recommend and I would take him again!
Absolutely loved Ryan. He was awesome. His lectures were hilarious and very easy to follow. His class was so much fun. I don't really enjoy writing, but I loved this class. His grading policy was easy to understand. I would totally take another class from him.
Pretty funny guy, had him for WR121. While he is hilarious, it often interfered lectures and discussions.
You literally never have to go to class outside of essay workshop days and due dates and there's only 3 essays over an entire term, which makes this the easiest A I've ever gotten. If you go to any of his WR-121 unit, go for the literary analysis unit, because it's the hardest to do without advice. Other than that, enjoy your free period...
Ryan is a great teacher. relates on many different levels. You'll be able to share a laugh, and tell a story with Ryan. If possible take him and find out.
Teacher spent more time joking in class than teaching the subject. Our essays were never handed back on time. Peers did not know how to work shop. Don't expect to be prepared for the university workload if you take this professor. Students are set up for failure. It's fine if one is a lazy student, not good for one who's serious about education.
All of my essays were graded at the end of the term. Received NO helpful feedback. Teacher communicated not once to his students on line or graded papers during the term. Students did NOT interact. Teacher is LAZY. I care about my education. This teacher is not for the serious student. Took screenshots of ten weeks of no graded essays.
Professor showed no involvement in the class. Final grades took over a month after the class to post. No online feedback or interaction between students. Minimal feedback on essays. Selected reading was decent at best. Could pass with my eyes closed. Do not take if a serious student. There are much better professors at CCC to choose from. Avoid!
I go out of my way to take Ryan's English classes as electives. If you love to read/write hes a great teacher. Yes he may take a while to get your assignments back on time, but as long as you turn the essay in on time- you're good! He cares a lot about his students and if you walk into class with an open mind- you're guaranteed to learn.
The grade was focused on three things and if you messed up one time, your grade was at stake. No room for failure. He does let you revise sometimes.
The class was decently easy. Only three essays total and a forum post weekly. However he will not respond to emails. His communication is awful and his grading policy is very easy. If you consider yourself a decent writer, this is an easy A. For those who like communication and help, he is not a teacher for you.
Ryan is one of the best professors I've had. He's funny, educated, and engaging. I've taken two classes from him and I recommend his class to anyone who's looking for a fun and insightful English class that's a pretty easy A.
Class time will never be boring
Does not give ANY feedback, gave my paper a B and wrote one thing at the end Awk. What type of English professor does that? Takes a while to respond to emails. Only perk is that there were only 3 major essays and a weekly discussion. Unfortunately, if you dont do well on papers/ do the discussion posts you will fail. No extra credit offered.
Makes sure all students understand criteria and enjoy the class
While I only had Ryan for creative writing courses, I thought his lectures and feedback improved me as a writer significantly. He is a pretty easy grader and he admits it. Most importantly, the atmosphere he creates for his students is incredibly open and allows for true creative energy to be generated by people of any writing skill level.
Ryan is awesome! He's very down to earth and approachable! He makes creating respect in the class a priority. He's very open to having conversations with you about the class and is willing to help meet the student where they are at.
Class was an easy A. What I didn't like was due to COVID this class was online, and the professor did not schedule a zoom meeting, post announcements, give feedback on a single assignment, or keep up on grades. The rest of my classes were great and interactive even being online. I didn't learn anything other than turn in my work and waste money.
I took Ryan's American Film class in Winter 2020. He is great and really empowers students to find and follow their interests/tastes/preferences for projects and the final paper. He lectures like a chill dad and is great one-on-one. Definitely recommend!
I took ENG194 in Winter and got 100% in his class and am currently taking ENG195. Either is SUPER easy. Each week, you must watch 1-2 movies, then write a one page reflection. There are two analyses '(2-3pgs), one four-page paper, and an (easy) final project. All of the movies are exceptional so it makes the class fun and intriguing.
He took until the end of the term to grade anything beyond the first essay. Everything was graded 3 days before the end of the term so I had no idea whether or not I was passing his class and what needed to be improved with my work. Then to top that, he accused the whole class of plagiarism 3 days before the end of the term. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!
This was a really easy class, but no assignments were graded until week 9 of the term. There was a lot of assigned reading, but I stopped doing it after the first week, and still got an A+.
I love film, its a reason I am studying Digital Media Communication. Before taking his class, people said, "Davis is a really cool instructor." This instructor was terrible. Not good at communication. Accused me of plagiarism (which I did not!) How about before grading a paper you communicate with the student instead of accusing. F for him.
Good feedback. Waits till end of term to grade essays.
Ryan Davis is a very personable and funny teacher and my class enjoyed many fun conversations with him. English is not one of my favorite subjects and I found it very stressful but I never felt like my assignments had been graded unfairly and the feedback given was always detailed and helpful.
Appropriate pace and assignments for class. Funny stories too.
I just finished his nature writing class and had a blast. He gives great feedback on papers, assigns interesting reading and assignments and is overall a great teacher. 10/10 would take his class again.
You solely learn based on the ridiculously long websites/papers that he posts, never actually teaches the class, or even tries. The grades are dependent on three major papers and doesn't even give constructive feedback, just gives whatever grade. If you actually want to learn something, take another class.
Really funny and easygoing. Essays weren't required to be very long AT ALL. I really liked him both as a teacher and as a person. Super nice guy. :)
You might think you are taking WR121; however, you are taking intro to political science. All he talks about in class is how bad Trump/Musk/Republicans are. Other than that, he is a straight forward funny individual. I like how he explains the papers, but he rambles so long about things that aren't important.
Didn't respond to a single email the entire term. I had sent him 4 separate emails. Didn't grade any of my work until the day before finals were due and our final was to revise our essays based on his feedback. I had less than 24 hours to complete my final paper.
If you wish to write about any good topic I suggest you take this class with someone else this guy has banned topics such as: Abortion, Cars, 2nd amendment, weed, religion, sports, obesity, and age of substance use. I'm heavily disappointed I cannot write over any of these topics as his second essay is literally titled "the American problem."
I learned nothing in his class. We had to read very short material (if we even got any) while the professor himself would take WEEKS to grade a paper. Rough draft edits came in 3pm the day they were due, he had the rough drafts for about 2-3 weeks. Essay feedback wasn't helpful either. Don't take his classes, you will learn nothing.
