DeMoss is a very nice teacher who will try to help you with all he's got. Very supportive towards international students, and has a jolly personality rarely found among instructors. Quite an easy grader, and loves it when you experiment with sentences that are more complex. Heard he gave extra credit once for those who attended class, so attend it!
In 101 focus is three essays(4pg),meet expectations (refer to syllabus/grading policy) &you'll be fine. You can use textbook or other source but fiction only for your essay. Posts class notes online. Appreciates class participation, so when reading is assigned - be prepared! Overall good prof, knowledgeable, straightforward, and understanding.
Ryan was great! I went in thinking he was going to be awkward and disorganized, but looks can be deceiving. He was helpful and really wanted his students to pass. The essays weren't hard, and you could use movies and tv shows as well as books as sources. I found myself wishing he taught ENG102! I would definitely recommend this professor to anyone.
Ryan was awesome. He made all students feel relaxed, he was charismatic and interested in his subject. He made me excited to go to class, which for me isn't an easy thing to do. Fairly lenient grader, but he doesn't allow you to skimp off on homework.
Demoss is very clear and precise in his lectures, and is actually much more helpful than any other English teacher I've had! Some of the readings can be a bit thick, and there's a constant stream of online discussions, but the feedback is extremely useful and helps improve writing.
He's a very good teacher, he always keep the topic interesting. A good sense of humor just made him awesome. His classes are always the first ones to be full. Get in his class, and have a fun time learning.
Mr. DeMoss is a great teacher. I learned a lot of good writing skills that really stuck with me as I went into other English classes which helped a lot. He's also super chill and entertaining during class. I would definitely recommend taking his class.
Mr. DeMoss is one of the best instructors at EdCC. He explains the material very clearly, and he communicates with students efficiently. I would recommend anyone to take his class. You would enjoy it! He is really nice and the class atmosphere is positive and enjoyable to learn.
Mr. Demoss is a great prof. He knows what he's doing alright. He has a kind heart and wants his students to succeed. He does help people with what he got, very open minded, very thoughtful and meticulous. The essay revision is great cuz it can improve one's grades drastically. He's also not too serious, it's great. He also understands his students.
He is a awesome teacher. I took his eng100 and eng101, so sad that he is not teaching eng102.
great professor!! take him
Great professor! He is nice and knowledgeable. And also, he grades fairly and offers a lot of extra credits. Getting 4.0 in this class is not that hard; however, you still should give your best efforts.
Learn a lot of writing technique from his class. He offers some extra credits, and he is an easy grader. He gives clear and detailed comment on essays which I found very helpful in the process of learning.
Ryan is super laid back, younger, and actually relate-able. He is really into filming and movies so he throws out tons of suggestions and comparisons and is super understanding and helpful if you talk to him.
He is the best and easiest professor I've had. 100x take his class. He covers everything in class always, and talks about everything, from grammar and essay writing tips, to social issues. The assignments are fairly easy and you get lots of learning from every single one. Honestly looking forward to taking ENGL 102 so I can have him again.
Ryan is a fantastic teacher who always tries to connect the material to the outside world, and further use that as a springboard into discussion. Discussions are very big in his class, so make sure you have something to say about the readings. Overall, if you have the chance, take his class.
Ryan is an amazing teacher. He is funny, cool, and he is pretty young. The lectures are a little long, but you do not get bored because he keeps everyone engaged. As long as you give your absolute best on the 10-12 page essay, you will most likely get a good grade.
He is one of the best teacher I've ever had in my entire life. He is willing to help you with all the subjects that you don't understand in class. I really enjoyed taking his class. He gave me a lot of informations, especially about movies. He is one of my inspirational. Not only that, he is also super super NICE!!!
You won't regret to take this class. He is the BEST! He is always there for you. You will love this class so much! You will need to read, but it will help you to improve your english. Also, there will be a class party during the final week (**loved the candies that he brought! 3 plus the snacks and foods).
good!
I am taking his Eng 102 class again next quarter. He is so passionate about teaching and cares a lot about his students' success. However, keep in mind that you will have to read a lot but it will really help you to provide further understanding and ideas in developing your essays. Very supportive & highly recommended for international students.
Mr. Demoss is a great teacher who is always willing to help his students and answer any questions. His love for movies sometimes leads him off topic, but he is funny and always in a good mood. His assignments can be a little confusing but if you ask him he will go over what he expects. Writer's Reference was not used at all.
Very nice and helpful teacher. Long lectures. And sometimes goes off on a tangent but its fine because he really loves what he teaches! Although try not to get confused. You should definitely ask and take notes for your questions. The Study of American Folklore book and Writers Reference honestly were barely at use for the class.
I took him for Engl100 and Engl101 because I think he's a good, kind teacher that will help you at hard times. Plus, he's very fast in replying back your questions through email. just participate in getting to know the class then you'll find his lecture very interesting
Ryan is a good instructor, however he is not as easy as he looks. He is a tough grader on Essays. Dont get carried away by his sweet and humble nature, keep your game on top and study! He gives good feedback and is extremely strict with Late assignments. He is the only instructor that brought us snacks, ice cream and candy twice in class.
I took him class again for English 102. He is a really good teacher and very generous and honest in grading and he will give you the grade that you truly deserve. We have a potluck on the last day and he want his students to have a good time in class. There are extra credit opportunities and you get to pick your own topics for your research papers.
I did not care for him, he would go on long off track tangents and didn't really teach English, he mostly talked about random things that did not pertain to the class. He is also a very tough grader, but yet lacked clarity on projects and feed back.
He's the best teacher ever!!! I don't regret taking his class. My writing improve a lot as an international student!! I would want to take him again for English 102
We are halfway through the quarter now and I have to say that Ryan is one of my favorite English teacher! He is so passionate about urban legends which made the topic of the research paper interesting! He helps a lot in class and gives you full points each time on assignments and discussions if you do them correctly. I would recommend him to anyone
He is enthusiastic about what he teaches and gives great feedback. None of the assignments felt like busy work- everything related to the three 200 point essays sprinkled throughout the quarter. Lectures are long but he is friendly and actually pretty funny if you appreciate sarcasm. He brought candy for Halloween.
Group discussions are frustrating and don't teach much. Lectures are enjoyable, clear, and everything is explained in a simplistic way so you always get the idea. Sometimes he gets off track. Assignments are usually clear, but the online discussions need more instructions. He gives a lot of comments on essays, but is fair with the final grade.
Ryan is a good instructor who cares about his students and their success on the essays. However, don't expect that just because he's nice means that you can be as lazy as you want in his class. This class is easy, as long as you put in the work and follow his instructions on the essays. Overall, it's not a hard class to pass. I would recommend him.
An awesome teacher who cares about improvement in students' work. He is very supportive towards international students and if you are an international student, take his class! You will definitely learn a lot! As a person who is not really good at essays, I was able to receive good and decent grades as long as you listen and follow his instructions.
My favorite English instructor ever and the nicest teacher in Edmonds!!! He is so flexible and understanding. Advice: Take him! He is really nice and super helpful and really willing to help. He will always answer whatever questions that you have for him (email or face to face). Tips: If you are hardworking and do the work, you will pass with a 4.0
I love Ryan! He is so nice and he will always help you if you have any questions/concerns about your research paper. You can tell that he cares a lot about his students and their success and the theme of "Urban Legends" is very interesting to learn and discuss. I always struggle in English writing classes, but now I feel like I have imprpved a lot!
Ryan is one of the best English teacher at EdCC. He's super kind and helpful and understanding. If you ever have a problem with anything, he always listens and give you the best advice. Take his English classes (100, 101, or 102) if you are fulfilling English composition credits, and if you're an international student, I would highly recommend him.
Ryan is a fantastic professor. He is truly helpful to his students. He will give sufficient information that will help you succeed. The final paper is not the easiest but as long as you listen and follow instructions you will be able to get a decent grade. He responds to emails right away time. Thumbs up!
Hilarious but educational. You can apply your study into real life if you learn from Ryan. But sometimes off the track. :)
Ryan is very nice, funny and helpful! He likes to discuss movies, especially horror movies! He is a fair grater, and he offers extra credits. He is clear about what he expects. If you follow his instructions and guidance, you should pass his class with 4.0. Over all, he is the best English teacher and I will definitely take Ryan again!
great teacher
Really great, super funny, gets off track easily but it makes everything so much more fun. Loved the monsters theme class. I wish I had him for 101. Super cute!
Tons of hw that he never grades till the end of the quarter. His lecture is all about random stuff like films, which didn't help students to finish the paper. You will get a good grade as long as you follow his guideline.
the coolest English teacher out there.
Mr. Ryan is the best at teaching English 99. His lectures are great and clear, and he cares about his students.
Although challenging, the rewards are beneficial. Stay on top of your work, you are fine. He is a late grader, but fair. Exciting subject matter for his "Monsters" class. He is organized. Lectures are fun. He sometimes goes on interesting tangents, but he always covers what you'll need to know. Shows what to do without telling you how to do it.
Super nice, always there for help, a lot of extra credits given, would take his class again!
Ryan is one of the best teachers at Edmonds CC. He is super nice, helpful, and understanding. He gives sufficient information that will help you succeed. I highly recommend him.
I love Ryan, hes seeiously one of the best teachers Ive ever had. He really wants to make sure all his students succeed. He is willing to work with you if youre having difficulty. His lectures are fun, somehow they always turn into movie references and trailers. He gives great feedback on essays and allows revisions!
he is great if you want high score, he is very helpful when you ask him to help you personally by email or in person.
Super nice and really funny. Very approachable and open to giving students feedback. I'd definitely recommend him, one of the most enjoyable English classes I've ever taken.
It is hard for international students to understand his jokes or explanation for essays.
He is the best teacher ever. I love him and I've learned so much from him. Strongly recommend
Ryan is a great English professor. He is knowledgeable, patient and nice. He is willing to spent time to help his students. He replies e-mail very quick and give out constructive advise. My English writing improved lots in this class. He enjoys literature and shares with students. I enjoy his class very much.
I came in his class thinking I was going to get a B or below, ended up with a -A. If you try your hardest you can easily get an A. Ryan is funny and cares for his students, he also replies fast via email. Would definitely recommend for English 102.
Hes an amazing teacher who cares about his students success. I loved learning from him. Hes funny and interesting. Took 99 and 102 with him. Greatest teacher ever !
Mr Demoss is a great teacher. He loves his job, and wants his students to enjoy his class. He tries to teach in a way that is different from other teachers, and engaging to the students. He kept the 2 hour periods interesting with items that he clearly enjoys, to illustrate a certain point helpful to class. I am trying to get in his class for 102.
Ryan DeMoss is one of the best English teachers ive had. He is very caring and nice, he understands that English isnt for everybody. He will make you do the work, if you try hard and put in the effort you should have a decent grade. I would high recommend.
Great discussions, each class was interesting and allowed you to be involved.
I highly recommend anyone who is planning to take English 101 at EDCC! One of my fav professors! My writing has definitely improved because of his feedback. Ryan's lectures are always engaging and makes class enjoyable. He will assign some readings that will help write your essay. No quizzes or tests and he also offers extra credit assignments.
The best English teacher at EDCC. Period.
Mr. DeMoss is one of the best instructors Ive had. He is very caring and understanding making sure students understand the concept by explaining it in different ways. In addition, he is always willing to help you if youre willing to put in the effort! Emailing him is always an option if you have any questions regarding any assignments!
The whole class is just 3 essays and small weekly assignments. The small weekly assignments are worth 15 points and they are basically a completion grade. Do all the assignments and based on how well you do on the essays ( He is very helpful on essays and it is very easy to do quality work) it should be an easy A. Very kind and caring teacher
Ryan is the best professor you can get. I wish there were more English professors like him. He's caring, funny and helpful. Try to make time and meet with him before you submit your essay. He'll give you good feedback on your papers and it will definitely help you on the long run.
Ryan is one of the best professors who teach at edmonds he is so chill but he still cares about you and your grade.
Very chill teacher and his lectures are very good as he always relates and references them to movies and other more digestible things. Going to class is important, as his non-hybrid classes have all discussions in class and you will lose points if you don't show up. He takes time to explain things and is very easy going. Not that hard of a grader.
Ryan is a very good prof, He takes his time to explain in details. He is a very cool and understanding. if his schedule was favorable to me I would have continued with him for English 101
I took his class and at first it was alright, at the end of the quarter we missed some days due to snow and that made my grade shaky.
All of the professor's assignments were able to be used effectively in essays. They werevery good assignment and theme. His e-mail took 1-2 days to respond, and he gave good feedback to the students' questions, always paying attention to the students. His grading is rather slow, because two-thirds of the assignments are graded after the final.
Demoss is a pretty good teacher. All you need to do is finish all the discussion assignments on time and do well on your essays. He grades lightly on the essay if you put in a lot of time and effort.
Professor DeMoss is an amazing teacher. He expects students to read the material before coming to class to be able to participate in the class discussion. Discussions are graded, so try not to miss the class. There are 3 main essays during the quarter and easy assignments. Accessible and responds to emails. Extra Credit. Highly recommended.
He is one of the best instructor I ever had in edcc by doing assignments and submitting your essay's on-time matters a lot. I wish I had an instructor like him for biology classes too.
He is the GOAT in English studies At Edmonds Community College. He's a very open-minded and respectful instructor that he gives a lot of good feedback for the assignments and essay to pass his course. Also, he explains very well that it will make you laugh by using pop culture to understand anything about literature on your essays and assignments.
Just don't use words like "it" or "these" or "that" in your papers because he will take off points. His comments aren't very helpful on papers so if you're confused about your grade, email him and ask him to explain better and he will. Really kind, chill, and laid-back. Helpful. Revisions and Extra Credit assignments are available.
Ryan is by far the best English professors I have ever had. I struggle a lot with why am I writing this, does this matter but every assignment be there to aid you in the midterm and the final. I took an early class and he made worth it to be there in the morning and this is finally a class I feel I absorbed a lot of new knowledge and hes funny/kind
Ryan is a great teacher! I took this class early in the am and it was totally worth it. He is very understanding and truly cares for all his students to make sure that they are all successful. He is respectful and if you ever need any help he is there for you and gives great advise. He kept the class fun and definitely has a passion for English!
I decided to take his English 101 course in spring. His class was nothing but a pain as we were going through a worldwide pandemic. He wouldnt cut us any slack. He dosent care about what is going on outside of the course, he is always gonna make the assignments mandatory. Other than that all Im going to say is save yourself and do not sign up.
I took his course more than a year ago, so it was in-person. My experience was great with Ryan. I learned and improved a lot through his class, especially fixing my grammatical errors. There were three main essays students needed to do throughout the quarter. He is one of my favorite professors at Edmonds College.
Ryan is a great teacher maybe the best I have ever had in terms of teaching and explaining. He is very clear and makes it very easy to understand. He is respectful and caring, but if you're going to take his class gett ready do a lot of homework, no free time if you want an A in his class. But all classes have too much work tbh. Ryan makes it easy.
Mr. DeMoss is a good teacher. He can be fairly vague with some of the assignments but he is always open to answer any questions through email. This class gives a good foundation for argumentative essay writing.
Professor DeMoss provided a lot of feedback on assignments and replied fairly quickly to messages or emails. I took this class online during Covid-19 and Mr. DeMoss was very supportive and easy to communicate with.
The best English teacher I ever had. His feedback and explanations are awesome! Be prepared for a 10 page research paper! If you're taking the urban legend course, you'll love it :)
Mr. DeMoss was honestly a great teacher. Always replied and gave feedback to students on how they could improve their papers. There was a lot of reading throughout the quarter. There's going to be a 3000-word essay due at the end. If you're really into folklore, this class is for you. If not I'd take a more interesting topic.
If you just want to pass the course, don't take his class. He is a very tough grader. There are so many assignment and reading.
Very very good teacher I suggest you hurry up and pick his class!
Ryan is an awesome professor. Work was not too heavy and always clear. 3 essays through the semester, all had really good feedback. He gives you a chance to get an excellent grade if you try. Great class for eng101!
Mr. D is a nice professor. However, he didn't put our homework grades on the canvas until a few days before the end of the semester. I don't even have much time to make up my homework:( I turn in all my work before the due date! On the last day of the quarter, you can see your grade dropping every hour!!
Professor DeMoss is the best. You have three essays in his class and for the first two, you can revise them for a better score. His homework is very manageable and reasonable. I would advise emailing him for feedback on essays and he will definitely give you a better essay score. I passed with over 100% in his class, he is the best! Easy 4.0!
He graded me wrong many times. For ex: he said that my final essay works cited are not MLA format, when in fact, I used the school library citation generator (which is reccomended and are 99% true). He also gives feedbacks and grade very slow. I receive most of my assignments grade 3 days before the quarter ends.
The material was interesting, but I was mainly surprised by how kind he was. A close friend passed towards the end of the quarter, and he was very compassionate. He even talked with me about my friend for a bit which I didn't expect him to do.
Professor Demoss' greatest quality is his consistency and desire for you to succeed. A bit of reading to do every week and he grades the 3 essays thoroughly, but he's super chill and flexible. You get opportunities to mess up, which allows you to learn and still get an A+. No uncertainty as to what he'll do because he always has your back.
Mr. Demoss is a very cool dude and I find him to be a really good person. The class was easy and if you try you won't have trouble getting a 4.0 in the class. We had three essays (no test) and he was lenient on what you could write about. He grades them soft and fair and has no issue with you disagreeing with him politically in the essays.
Mr. Demoss really cares about his students and consistently makes a way for them to do well on assignments and improve their grades. His lectures are both funny and useful, and he is lenient with grading and late work as long as you communicate well with him. He keeps his students engaged and always records in-class lectures. Great professor.
Very good and understanding. Great feedback although it could take some time.
Ryan is an amazing guy honestly. He's extremely accommodating, and an easy grader, as long as you turn stuff in. He's also just a genuinely nice guy. He does occasionally go on tangents during class, but it's always very interesting and you can tell he's passionate about folklore. Definitely recommend.
I found his class very hard to understand. bearable, but unclear on instructions. Hes very passionate about folklore and most assignments he asks of you are up to your own creative analysis which is very hard to know if I was doing it right when my interpretation could be something he was not looking for. loved the essay tho even tho I got a B.
His work ethic is terrible. He couldn't put in the effort to revise his syllabus and used an old one (inaccurate deadlines and all).
It was bearable but had a problem with giving unclear instructions, but does respond to emails quickly when asked for clarification. The syllabus was not updated and kept from the last semester but I did take a summer course so that's nothing too bad. As well as there are two textbooks but unclear if we needed the second one.
Ryan was a great teacher. There were only 3 750-1000 word essays the entire quarter, and the workload in between was pretty light. He is very helpful and friendly an grades fairly, would definitely recommend!
He is a great teacher, one of the best I had this quarter. Two main essays worth a lot ( final can be an extended version of your midterm). Gives great feedback very detailed. He is extremely accommodating to personal and family problems. Replies to email very quick and is ready to help when wanting. Explains each assignment in detail.
The course layout is unorganized, and some assignments are repeated in other modules making it confusing. It's hybrid so you can attend the in-person class or Inspace online. He's a tough/slow grader. There are 3 total essays, I wasn't fond of doing the third essay on the last week of the quarter, but he's a laid-back teacher. Many group discussion
So terrible professor in the beginning of course he gave good score and then for Midterm and Final he give bad grade and you can't pass this class.
This class consisted of a bunch of low-point assignments and 3 main essays. Honestly, the smaller assignments weren't worth doing because your grade weighed heavily on the essays. He'd give extensions if you needed them and was a super generous grader on the essays. During lectures, he was open to answering all questions and made it interesting.
Class is easy but lectures seem irrelevant. Sometimes the work seems unrelated to the big paper at the end and 50% of the assignments aren't really explained. Gets really off topic sometimes and goes on tangents. Attendance is mandatory but he's almost always a few minutes late. Not my fav, recommend if you're a self learner and worker.
Class was tolerable but assignments have unclear instructions and go off topic often. He is also an extremely slow grader. My midterm was turned in in February and it took him until the last day of the quarter to input scores. If you email him with questions about assignments, you will not receive a clear answer. All in all not a good class to take
This professor is great. He's really honest and reasonable grading. He will give you extensions if you need it and really caring.
Humble, caring, gives good feedback, and is a fair grader in my experience. Engl 102: Moderately difficult. Has 3 main assignments: ~250 word abstract, ~1,000 word argumentative research essay, then expand that essay to ~3,000 words for the final. Focus on grammar, flow, removing vague language, and avoid "circular reasoning" fallacy.
Laid back and easy to work with Lenient grader Extra credit is provided plus revisions for the first two essays Records and streams lectures Slow grader when it comes to assignments Canvas page is somewhat disorganized and can get confusing and cluttered Assignment criteria and expectations unclear at times
He is a great professor, takes attendance as a grade so you have to be in class if you want to maintain a good grade. He gives 24 hours after the due date to submit late assignments no questions asked then locks them after that period. No finals or tests, just projects and he lets you handle them in a creative way. Talks and lectures a lot!
Professor is mostly fair, with helpful feedback. Assignments can be tricky, but using resources like unstuck study alongside the textbook can really help. Attendance is required but class time is often disjointed.
Im not a big fan of writing so its hard for me not be biased towards english professors, but Demoss is a chill guy and he's probably your best bet for Engl&102. He only posted stuff on Mondays and Wednesdays all the stiff was pretty basic. There's a midterm and final paper, but if you stay on top of things and communicate you'll be good.
Mr Demoss is so compassionate and a great professor overall, he provides clear feedback and the workload is manageable. His assignment and essay descriptions are clear and whenever you have a question he is always helpful. Even if you get a bad grade on an assignment he will give you helpful feedback and opportunity to revise it.
Very confusing about assignments and final test is way to hard to get a good score
I had fun at first during his class because he would talk about movies and shows too which I enjoyed but then he grades kind of unfair. My grade is barely passing because he gave me a 0 for my essay. All my assignments were fine but because of the 0 for one essay, my grade went down so quick. I tried to revise my essay but it is still a 0. ill kms
He gave me a 0 for an essay which made my grade drop down. I did an essay revision but it was still a 0 so he reached out to me saying he can give me an extension which helped my grade a lot. I had to write the essay thrice but it bumped up my grade so it was fine. His lectures are very fun and interesting, I suggest going to his inperson classes.
DeMoss gave great feedback and was kind and fast to respond to emails. However, his canvas page was messy since it was his first online class and his feedback took a while - we didnt recieve our midterm papers back until less than a week before the final was due. He also gives a decent amount of busywork.
Best teacher I've had at Edmonds. Very caring and very easy to communicate with! I would 1000% retake his class. Very helpful with assignments, while giving good feedback. I loved him.
This class was a really bad experience. The instructor was extremely strict and made the course more stressful than necessary. He graded me zero on all my assignments just because I used AI on them, which felt very unfair and disrespectful as a teacher. I definitely wouldn't recommend taking his class, his teaching style made learning difficult .
Great teacher, if you have a documented reason he will be very nice with extensions. Great feedback, but mildly harsh grader. Got an 82 on the midterm, which was pretty fair. Literally just don't use ai… participate and you'll be fine. I cannot stress this enough if you use AI you will fail this class, don't be lazy and do your work.
Bro this teacher assigns so much damn work and never grades his crap, Jefferson takes a month to grade one assignment, I still haven't reserved a grade from multiple assignments thay I'd did TWO MOTHS AGO, dont take his class find sm easier bro, its not worth your time man.
