Very funny and spunky! Extremely helpful and to the point
very good professor I learned a lot!!!! come to class, do your assignments and put fourth effort and you will get an A. Exetremly easy he is a new generation of professor..highly recommend to take the class!!!!!!!
Very helpful and funny guy! Just show up to class and put forth the effort then he'll give you what you deserve!
He is very funny and helpful, he is there to help you learn and to motivate you. Take his class!!
Great teacher, very funny, and you will learn and improve in your writing if you pay attention and put int he work.
He is very easy as he can be with the subject and it's almost hard to not get an a. Plus he's hot and funny
Had for Comp 1 and 2. He's funny and nice but runs late to class. He hardly ever inserts the grades and you usually have to wait to get your final grade. He also does a very poor job at checking and returning your papers.
I am extremely disappointed with this professor considering all of the rave reviews. We are half way through the semester and haven't received any grades back. He doesn't respond to emails and this is an online class. I hope he gets organized soon or I'll have to drop the class.
I hate English. Ryan made it fun. We never used the book. Had assigmant due every week. Can't return papers on time and never kept us the whole class normally a hour-2 hours. Love his teaching styles and does help you if you ask. Returns email ,never. Returns papers a few classes later.
Ryan is a great guy. If you put in the effort and do your work, you will get an A! He is big on ruff drafts and developing prefection. I agree he is slow with the grading, but come on he's reading like 100, ten page papers a week! Enjoy the class show up, show you care and you will get your "A"!! ;~)
Loved Ryan! He kept the class interesting and never kept us the full 3 hours. Never used the writers tab but did use the reading book. Had papers do every week and yes it took him a few weeks to return them. Big NO NO in his class is printing when he is talking , problay the only thing that made him mad. I highly suggest taking a class with him.
Ryan is AWESOME!!! He does take a little time to grade everything but if you show up you get an A! Easy, and he explains everything so well. Every assignment is done for a reason, and it helps you in the end! I recommend taking him!
he is one of the best teachers i have had since i have been attending occ. he helps u out wenever needed.he wants u to pass his class bt not going to force u..excleent teacher i will b taking him for comp 1
Amazing teacher. He is committed to his students and to the subjects he teaches. He is engaging and intelligent and always presents a challenge. I wish I could have taken all of his classes!
If you are like me in which you are horrible in writing or just English period...This teacher is for you. Mr. Dillaha is the greatest & the hotest ENG teacher I have ever had lolz. Besides that, he really gets into the writing and helps you understand the goal and what its main focus is for the course....He's freaking AAAAWWWWEEEESSSSOOOOMMMMEEEE!!
This class is really easy, partly because he never grades any papers. This semester ends on 26th June and so far we have only received grades for 3 of our papers. Nothing, including the mid-term paper is graded. Professor promises the next day grading, but never follows through. He grades really leniently, but nevertheless, it is pretty frustrating
This class has many papers essays and online posts. The professor is slow to respond to email and actually skipped an entire section of the course work one week. He seemed to constantly be running behind and most of the work was not graded until the end of the semester. If you struggle with writing I would not recommend this class online.
Ryan is a great teacher. I suck at writing and got better. He made me want to write. He is funny and very motivating. I can't wait to take another class with him.
This guys Lit classes are the best thing going at OCC. If you're actually interested in art, politics, literary theory, he is a real gem. Super smart, well read, funny, intense... Take notes! He says a lot and not always in order.
Great class. We wrote mostly about pop culture. Ryan is entertaining and clear about the expectations. I would def take him again.
I took this class because I like science fiction. I ended up learning a lot more about a lot of stuff I never thought I would be interested in. I wish I would have had more classes like this at OCC.
Nice dude, great professor. Come prepared and turn in your papers and you should be good.
Ryan is a great professor. He cracks jokes. Makes everyone feel comfortable. Most importantly he tells you exactly what he wants out of a paper and if you check off everything he want out of that paper, you can't fail the assignment. I wish he taught every English level:)
I took Comp 1 with Ryan this summer, and received more hands on help and practical advice with my writing than I had in any class I have taken. You have to keep up with the work though.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had at OCC. He genuinely cares about helping students improve their writing. Go to class and keep up with the assignments and you'll be golden ;)
Great, funny, and friendlly professr.
Funny, passionate, clear, and ultimately kinda strict. Do the work though, and you get better at writing and get a good grade.
Professor Dillaha is super cool and fun. He keeps the class entertained and doesn't ask for much...just your attendance and attention. If you show up for class, you will have NO problem.
As a serious writer, I applaud his dedication to better our writing abilities & critiquing the works of our fellow peers. As the same time, I always had a good time in class, especially in ENG 2820, & actually made friendships that continued even after both semesters ended. That being said, they're not blowoff classes; you have to put in the work.
Dillaha is an AMAZING English teacher. If I could have him for comp 2 I would but unfortunately he isn't teaching it this semester. : He has improved my writing skills tremendously! I would HIGHLY recommend taking Dillaha for any English class. He's hilarious! He makes learning fun! I actually enjoyed his 3 hour lectures!! :)
Awesome Comp 1 class, worth taking again
Relatively easy grader, focus is on content as opposed to mechanics.
I'm in Comp 1 with him and he is easily one of my favorite teachers I've ever had. Very energetic and passionate about teaching and helping students achieve success. Not to mention hilarious as well. If I could I would take every English class with him.
So full of life, he is a wonderful professor. He chooses interesting topics that are meant to engage students in the issues of the world around them. Prof. Dillaha is one of the best people/professors I've met in a long time. He is amazingly intelligent but instead of allowing that to make him arrogant, he uses it to benefit others as best he can.
Ryan is seriously so funny. He swears in the middle of the class, but I think that is what brings students out of their shells. He is a great teacher and is very easy grader for the most part. You will have homework every week though.
Great online class. He takes a really long time to grade papers so that was a bit frustrating. He is extremely clear on what he expects so just do the assignment every week and you'll do fine.
I'm sure he's a cool guy, but I had him online so it's not much interaction. Responds to emails on time, sometimes. He's there to help when technical problems occur online, so he is nice & helpful. He takes a really long time to grade papers. People don't know their grade until weeks later. Maybe should take him on campus if you want papers graded.
Exceptional teacher. Is definitely in the students corner. If you need some help, there for you with office hours, goes over every paper with you and gives feedback. I am a student returning to college after an extended break and was extremely helpful getting back in the groove
I had Ryan for online English 1510 (or Composition I) and I thought he was a great professor. He was very helpful and clear about what he expected in each essay or summary. The textbook we used was very helpful and the readings were interesting. Great class.
Great teacher, plenty of work. Gives good guidance.
The online class is really straight forward. If you read everything and write everything, I don't see how you wouldn't do really good. I did. A little long on grading things, but everything was laid out and explained, and he answered all my emails.
Actually hilarious. Not in a funny teacher way, but in a for real funny way. Real passionate about teaching too. Perfect combo for me. I actually enjoy going to class. He says if you don't go to class it's like taking karate and not going, you don't learn karate. Love this dude.
Ryan is by far one of the best educators that the world has to offer. He really cares about his people, he's passionate in his lectures, and never lets you down when you're looking to smile. You're not a customer to him! Take Creative Writing with him, &any other class he offers. Saying that one can learn through or from him is an understatement.
BEST CLASS EVER! I couldn't wait to get class everyday because he is an awesome professor! He's hilarious, all while teaching the material so well. His structure for teaching the writing process was so well thought through and made me such a better writer. He works with you individually on each major writing to help you improve your skills.
Great professor. No busy work, and straight to the point with what he expects. Come to class prepared and turn your assignments in n time and you'll pass.
He is there for you. Ryan is probably the funniest professor I have ever had, and he makes the class easy to pass as long as you show up, read, and pay attention in class. Short Story/Novel class is probably his chillest class, and I highly recommend it. My only issue is his papers tend to have a loose grading criteria.
His cool professor, complete what is expected of you and you will be credited. my writing improved drastically.
Ryan is great. He doesn't give too much homework, and at the end of the semester he will give you a good great! Hilarious, nice, intelligent!
He is the best English teacher I have had so far. I'm taking him again in the fall!!!
Prof. Dillaha was one of my favorite teachers at OCC. He really cares about his students and gives you really good feedback to work with. This class was really difficult as it requires you to really think outside the box and create ideas. He made the class more bearable. Just do the work and put in the best effort when writing your essays.
Guy is amazing! Very encouraging and engaging. Your really get out what you put in!
very kind guy. He'll grade you in personal meetings to make sure you fully understand. Don't miss a class or you will be lost, he accepts late work. Very helpful, best English teacher I had so far.
Good Teacher. Funny as hell. Very very very outspoken on his political views, if you are not a hardcore liberal be prepared to bite your tongue for 3 months.
Ryan was awesome! Does not want to be viewed as an authority figure and will treat you as an equal. You will have to write a paper every week on an article or a reading but they were quick easy papers, usually around 2 pages. Don't miss class cause you'll be lost. If you do the work you'll definitely learn some things and it will be an easy A.
Best professor I've ever had. Seriously. He's extremely intelligent and very insightful. His lectures are amazing/hilarious. We had an essay every week. It was intimidating at first, but he does it for a reason. You will see your writing develop; it was pretty cool and exciting. He gives his students the confidence to succeed. Take him!
He is the funniest but also most caring professor (person) you will take. He wants you to succeed and enjoy his class. Show up every week and do your homework, he really looks at that. I wish I needed more classes he teaches because he is just that awesome. Hardcore democrat, but don't let that change your views on your essays. I still got A's.
I real enjoyed his classes and he has a really funny personality but he is easy to understand and get along with as long as you are not on your phone consistently
My first OCC class and it was a solid start. Prof Dillaha (DILL-a-Hey) is engaging and if you want to hone some writing skills along with some critical assessment of relevant material (think: current-ish events) you could do far worse. I recommend this class as a way to start your degree, as it will help you stand out when writing for other classes
Super funny guy, will love you as long as you do the work and participate. A lot of writing but easy assignments. Lectures are always short.
Professor Dillaha is a nice guy but a subpar professor at best. He doesnt grade papers, even when asked persistently. Your grade is dependant on the final paper because thats the only one he actually bothers to read.
He was literally the best professor I ever had. Inspired me to write more, to create structure and everything he taught me was drilled into to the point that other classes have benefited from. Seriously excellent and humourous professor
I loved Ryan! He is super cool. He taught me so much and my writing really improved with his help. He has a cool perspective on life and made me think of things in a different way. He is a really easy grader.
Ryan is a really good teacher. He makes sure that you understand the basics of what he teaches before he moves on to the more difficult things.
Ryan is a good teacher over all. I was surprised with the way he spoke in class , or the language he used profoundly. But other than that he was a good English teacher, and I learned something from him.
I really loved this professor. Hes very knowledgeable about the subject in which he teaches. He hates if you dont do the reading, which I can understand how that would be frustrating to a professor. Hes also very cool and talks to you like a friend would, doesnt correct you on your choice of words. After all English language is evolving
I LOVE RYAN! Best prof Ive ever had! If you care, he cares. I left his class with not only more knowledge, but with confidence in my abilities and its all thanks to him. Hes such a stellar guy, and wants to make a real connection with each student. He wants you to succeed and cares about what you have to say. Honestly such a great guy.
Casual and serious at the same time.
Professor Dillaha is nice person. His lectures are interesting. Nice and honest grader!
He was a good professor. He gives quizes every week on the reading. He is slow at grading but as long as you try it shouldnt be difficult to get a good grade.
I love Ryan as a person... his class was really fun for my first college english class I would definitely take him again. only 3 paper and quizzes every week on readings.
Professor Dillaha might seem like a lot at first, but his class helped me improve my writing in ways I didn't even think about. As long as you pay attention and do the homework, you should be just fine. Plus, he's a cool guy and has some great stories.
I took him for a summer class, he graded all of my unit one a few days after I turned it in. Then he stopped grading, and it had me really worried about my future grade. I ended up with an A. However, I wish he gave more feedback. The writing center is your friend, take advantage of it.
Best Prof. I have ever had! There is certain things to be said about people that love their work, and Ryan is one of the best examples. Always gave great feedback, really made you feel appreciated. He a Prof. you respect, but also want to share a beer with. Go to class, put time in your work and your effort will be reciprocated! Will take again!
I didn't learn a thing. Took days to respond to emails & dropped 1/3 of the course material because he never posted the corresponding work to D2L. If I didn't have a husband with 2 masters who taught at a college level give me direction or critique my work, I don't know what grade I would've gotten; the professor's communication was abysmal.
Honestly one of my favorite professors. Answers all questions asked and is super helpful when it comes to directions and being prepared for assignments. Very clear, and always willing to be even more clear if needed.
Professor Dillaha is okay. He doesn't reply to emails (at all), and will change the syllabus throughout the semester to fit his needs. He also will fail you for assignments if you miss class (even if there's an extenuating circumstance) and will gladly and happily change due dates without alerting the class before the last minute.
He was great. Super passionate and friendly. Reading quizzes at the beginning of every class. Lots of philosophy discussed, which ended up being really interesting and challenging.
Ryan is a phenomenal teacher. He loves the craft and it shows. Ive never been more inspired by a teacher. Hes very understanding. He has trouble communicating outside of class but will not fault you for that.
I appreciate professor Dillaha honesty with grading. But he grades HARSH. he will take points off the simplest mistakes and will not teach you to correct them. he answers emails/discussion posts questions really...really late.
On every assignment he marks me down at least 20% due to my "poor grammar". However I spend at least an hour double checking it, running it through Grammarly, as well has having my mother who is a teacher herself go over it. And yet he still does not indicate what is wrong with my grammar, simply says "please check so and so paper on grammar"
I don't understand why others have said he is a tough grader, I thought he was a wonderful teacher and took his class for both comp 1 and 2. For comp II the workload typically consisted of reading a few chapters from the assigned book, a small reading quiz, and then writing a discussion post or 2-3 page essay. His online courses were very organized
Honestly he gives like five assignments so they weigh heavily on your grade. Missed one assignment and it resulted in my grade dropping a whole letter got a B on both exams. He also constantly talks about god and how things relate to the Bible.Sure he can be kinda funny but he takes the entire class for lectures so be prepared to doze off in class.
I can't rave about this man enough. I loved this class and what made it better was that he did too. He's so passionate about writing. Simple rules: show up every week and turn in all your assignments on time. He expects us to be adults and treats us as his equals. He understands life happens, just tell him. You won't regret taking this class, trust
Had him for ENG 1510 and 1520, in person and this semester, asynchronous. Terrific professor, was accessible outside of class through e-mails that answered my questions with little or no room for doubt. The feedback given on papers is also very helpful to know exactly where to improve for future assignments. Was glad to take him again.
Tough grader. He gives feedback in a very mean and rude way. His class was easy if you do very well writing papers. Be patient, he takes forever to grade them.
Don't procrastinate, turn your assignments in on time, and check your grammar before submitting assignments and this is an easy A! The course consists of a very light workload. Focus on the few assignments he gives and you are golden. I would definitely recommend this professor for any English class.
everything about this class was slightly annoying to do. he gives good feedback when he does grade things. he is so slow with grading and just about as slow with responding to emails. so much reading, i stopped doing it because it was so much. i disliked his class and would never take him again simply to how he was in this semester alone.
Not bad if you just need the credit. Not graded on many of things, very slow grader. Papers or discussions due weekly. No late work accepted, no extra credit. Most readings were done on standardized English. Picky when grading. You'll 100% need the textbook, all the readings come from it. There is a good number of readings. Good feedback.
He is a good professor, coming from someone who does not excell well in writing and often struggles the most in this subject throughout the years, He made the process to get better a little easier. By providing examples in the textbook to better the writing. And the workload was not that bad either, only 3 essays in total and a reading every week
I took Ryan for comp1 and 2, comp1 was pretty simple and straight forward as I took it over the summer as an 8 week class and got an A. Comp 2 was very annoying and I couldn't wait for the semester to end. He wasn't very clear about what he wanted in comp 2 and it was our first time using the book. The class is extremely easy but got to be annoying
He is condescending, disrespectful and dismissive. Instead of holding himself accountable for what is obvious which is, authoritative tones as if he's scolding a child, he blames the student and claims that they misunderstood directness as disrespect. He uses words like "you were told," to do this or that. That isn't constructive criticism.
Barely replies to email or schedules zoom meeting. ( which is so important for online students)
If you want a class where you have to ask for your assignments to be graded, then this is for you. If you don't ask, you won't get a grade before your next paper is due. Don't expect feedback on your final either. This class is a masterclass in neglect. I came away feeling as though I learned absolutely nothing.
Had a lot of fun in this class.
