Meh, hes okay, not too bad not too good.
knows his stuff. makes a boring and difficult subject understandable and barable. i recomend him
Well aside from being hot...he is a great teacher! Very helpfull, friendly, and enthusiastic!
THis is a very complex topic! But Dillon totally loves the subject. He gives 4 tests all in essay format. If you are good at writing and pay attention they will be fine. He also requires one term paper 5-7 pages on any topic you choose. Great teacher, crapy subject!

Great teacher I did not understand a word from the book but he was very patient and always helped, he's really laid back and a total sweet heart I'm really glad I had him as a teacher his jokes made the subject more tolerable since I was so confused.
i really enjoyed this class. this subject is a bit difficult to understand but dillion does his best make sure he teaches in a way that everyone understands. The tests are essays but he does cover everything on the test plus he gives great study guides to help. i didnt really read the book but by just coming to class helped me understand the subject
Eccentric, yet patient, very entertaining, cool guy.
I was completely caught off guard because the class had nothing to do with philosophers. But regardless of that Dillon is an amazing teacher. The subject was completely confusing at times, but he made it fun. He has a real passion for the subject and also for helping his students learn. You really can't go wrong with that. =)
Good teacher, he was niec and helped me whenever i had problems. If you needed help molding an idea ofr an essay, he will help you if you approch him. He brought a piece of himself and put it into his message for each class. Good Teacher.
i loved this class! this was one of the best teachers i ever had in my life. when i looked at the textbook and read our first assigned reading, i thought this class was going to be horrible. but ryan completely changed that. he made everything i had read make so much sense without making it too simple. i enjoyed this class and highly recommend him
Good teacher, very enthusiastic, enjoys what he teachers. Not very difficult to pass, but sometimes needs to have people raise thier hands. It's annoying when your thinking about an answer and someone just blurts it out. Overall good teacher I would recommend.
Professor Emerick was hilarious! The class was challenging but Emerick's lectures and examples make it so much easier. I took this class in place of Eng 202 and i'm SOO happy i did! He's a great teacher and makes the class really enjoyable to be in:)
A great teacher! The book & the material is confusing, but his lectures explain it better. He doesnt care if you miss classes but go if you want a good grade. Theres only 1 essay to write. The quizzes are just like the examples in class. He grades very generously on a curve. Hes funny and tells lots of stories too. Overall "its easy...and fun.."
Dillon is a genius in the most literal sense. His talent for making difficult philosophical concepts clear and interesting, and passion for those topics he teaches are remarkable. The class was littered with exceptional knowledge on his part and quirky anecdotes (an odd fascination with monkeys and Alcibiades). Oh, if he wasn't married...damn.
This course really helped me become a critical thinker and the rest of my life is benefiting from it, especially at work. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had and he is a freaking genius. It was a lot of fun and he is a very cool guy.
Mr Emerick is a funny guy. The class is very laid back and fun. Pay attention and study and you've got an A
Awesome teacher. I'm taking his third class this semester. I've had him for Knowledge and Reality (102), Philosophy of Religion (105), & am currently taking Critical thinking (115). Makes great stories for analagies, implicates the students in the discussion rather than drone on in lecture. Funny and not-in-the-slightest intimidating. light homewor
This is a relatively hard class. You need to pay attention and engage in the discussions to pass this class. The difficulty level is not due to the instructor, but to the material covered. If it had been the other instructor that I know teaching this,I would not have gotten the B that i did not deserve. This guy makes the time fly and eases the pai
For such an arduous and relatively difficult class, critical thinking was very fun and informative. I have taken Dillon for many of my classes and will continue to do so until i cannot. He is my mentor and friend on my conquest for knowledge in academia! Dillon is awesome, great speaker, easy to approach, makes work fun! TAKE HIM!
for such a hard class he is awesome! he helps out a ton if you dont understand and for all the stupid people who think they should say something (which they usually shouldnt) he isnt mean but takes their questions seriously so they occur more often but him going over it again and again really acquaints you with the info. i completely recomend him.
Sorry, not feeling the love. This was the worst online class I've taken so far. He literally disappeared the last 5 weeks. Very slow to grade exams and weekly work. Several of us had no idea of where we stood by the time the final rolled around. This may be one class that does not translate very well online. Maybe he's better in person.
Took as an online class. I didn't read any of the textbook and practically failed all the tests (which you have to take at the school even though it's an online class) If you just do all the homework and discussion boards and sort of study you'll probably pass. It's annoying that you have to take the tests on campus for an online class.
DROP THIS CLASS! I took his online class & it was a mess. I totally believe his intentions are good-but it was so confusing. 50% the homework is done on discussion board, and your feedback is based on STUDENT response, so you have no clue if you were right or wrong. He also posted the wrong dates for a test. Maybe "in person class" is different.
This class was sooo easy, its basic stuff he explained things very well. The most homework you'll ever get is to be turned in on a small notecard!(obviously not very much). A lot of people taking the online class at the time did have a hard time and i heard bad things from the online class, plus he said himself he gives his online classes more work
Don't take this class unless you want a lot of work and if you are able to do your assignments in a weekly manner. After the weekly assignment is due, it is no longer available. You must take your online exams on campus. It was a disappointment.
I was iffy about taking phil because it is known to be a hard class but, if you have Emerick you will be just fine.He is one of the coolest professors you will have. He makes the class fun and breaks it down until you understand it. Really funny and down to earth. You will love this guy!Take his class!!
I do not recommend Emerick. The instruction was clear at first, and became impossibly confusing. Do yourself a favor- choose a different PHIL teacher.
Do NOT take Phil 115 online with Emerick!! He gives his online students more work, with less instruction! I will never use ANYTHING that I learned in this class again in my life, and it has completely turned me away from philosophy. What is the point of evaluating arguments in this manner??
If you take this as an online class you are MAJORLY selling yourself short. I took the online class last semester-and HATED it! I retook it fall semester-IN CLASS! And it was sooo much better! He GENUINELY cares-so go after him if you need help. HIS IN CLASS TEACHING IS BEST!
Good Teacher. Delievers information in a way to make it more relatable. Wants to help students understand concepts
Though I didn't care much for the subject, this teacher is funny, charismatic and very informative! I very much enjoyed his class. easy A if you turn in all your work! take this teacher if philosphy is your favorite or not!
this is a great class to take and i give my highest recommendations for it. emerick is very funny and makes the class enjoyable. he's good at keeping students involved and attentive. he uses lots of analogies to help describe things, and often they're hilarious while also being understandable and informative. i'm sure anyone would enjoy his class!
Dillon is one of the best teachers i have ever had. Easy A class. MUST TAKE if interested in PHIL!!!
Dr. Emerick is easily one of the best professors I've had in college thus far. If you attend the lectures, the text is a breeze to get through afterwords. His teaching method is very engaging. Highly recommended.
Emerick is the man. Makes attending class fun, although attendance is not mandatory. If you are in class and pay attention, you will succeed. Super cool dude.
He's really nice and funny. Its really complicated material that he tries to spell out for you. He will never give up on a student. Good teacher and a difficult class. The other class with lee kerkhove is way easy. I got an A but you wont really learn as much as you will in this class.
Great Teacher! I love his class! He is very helpful and will answer any questions that you may have! I would definately recommend taking him if you are interested in Philosophy!
Really great professor. The all around package. Really nice smile. Really helpful. Fun. Fair grader. I learned a lot and enjoyed it in the process.
Great teacher. He makes you think about what he talks about, even when you're not writing a paper for the class or actually attending it. He is always willing to help you and is one of the more accessible professors I've had at Palomar. He's a Lakers fan too, so that's a plus.
Very helpful! explains everything very well and goes at the pace of the class. Some writing assignments but they are very easy to do if you pay attention.
easy class take this over seech
Awesome class, attend every lecture and you will barely have to do outside work. Lets you drop 2/4 essays, 2/10 short essays, and 2/5 or 6 tests. Will help you understand, and give many examples. Interesting class. He's a younger guy and loves Star Wars, Star Trek, and Starcraft 2 -attended Blizcon. Bonus points if you can reference these lol
Best professor I have ever had.
Amazing class, period!! I highly recommend this class. Only one writing assignment and homework is turned in on a 4x6 index card. Very minimal work. Exams are straight forward. As long as you study and do all of your work, you'll pass this class. This class is graded on a curve btw :P He's always willing to help anyone who needs it
Super nice teacher, one of the best at palomar! He really cares about his subject and wants his students to succeed. He's very approachable and loves answering questions. He plays starcraft. Nough said.
Such a cool guy. Knows how to socialize with students. Homework is easy and you only have to write one essay. Tests are fair, as long as you pay attention in class. Does a LOT of examples during lecture and likes to assign a lot of group work. friends with the author of the textbook.talks about his life experiences and how it relates to the subject
I have never written a rating for a professor before but after having Dillion, this was definitely necessary. He is an awesome teacher. The material can get a little confusing but he does his best to explain. He always responded to my emails within 24 hours and was very fair with grading. Definitely worth taking!
The material is a bit confusing, but he does such a good job at presenting the information. He uses a lot of examples to try and help you get a better understanding of the material and always incorporates a bit of humor in his lectures. Very understanding. Pushed back the due date for an essay twice. Definitely recommend him!
I am now considering majoring in Philosophy because of Dillon. He's a bit of a nerd, which gives him a great sense of humour. The readings are confusing at best, but his lectures are ridiculously helpful and he's very easy to pay attention to. He's lenient with essay deadlines. Just be sure to show up, because the readings can be near impossible.
Highly recommended! One of the best professors at Palomar. Dillon is very enthusiastic and you can tell he loves his subject. The readings are challenging, but he explains the concepts very well and with frequent examples. Easy-ish hw, grades very fairly. Makes you consider changing your major to philosophy. Take Dillon, you wont be disappointed.
I''m a last-minute kind of guy so this online class was pretty good for me. Clear deadline Fridays @ 1159 PM the tests are alright. I read the chapters in the book for the first couple of weeks but his lectures basically cover the material you need to know. Need the book for homework sometimes. There are a few real short assignments each week.
Best class. Interactive and very helpful. Not many points offered but he makes sure you understand the material. Atmosphere was like a class pow wow where all discussions were open. Would take again. Attendance is not mandatory but its fun and you will understand better. Why wouldn't you show up for his class? He is awesome.
I can honestly say that this was the best professor I have ever encountered. He tries to make the class very interesting by relating it to his extensive knowledge of "nerdy" fandoms. I rarely did the reading but all material is covered in his lectures so there is always a chance to pass. HIGHLY recommend this professor. Does not have a textbook.
This was a hard course by the nature of it. He did every thing possible to help his students understand the material. He is respectful to his students, responsive, a fair grader and has a great sense of humor. His lectures provided tons more clarity than the text. Would take another class from him.
Overall, good professor. Very easy going, approachable, helpful, and clear. While attendance is not mandatory, GO; class participation, asking questions, and his in-class breakdownexplanations were fundamental to really grasping concepts, as is his online lectures, since the book can be confusing and long. Grades on a curve (only reason I passed).
He is a really good teacher! He is super CHILL. Hw almost every class meeting, but it really isn't that hard. Rarely lectures. Only shows examples & how to do them. 2 writing assignments. Fair grader. Tests aren't that bad either. I would have him as a teacher again if he was teaching other classes I needed!
Dillion was an AWESOME guy and a pretty good teacher. Tests are exactly what you do in class so there is a ton of practice. Homework is easy, 2, 5 page essays that are rather hard to stretch out to 5 pages. Only complaint is that he gets sidetracked VERY easily, to the point where nearly half the class will be wasted, the material is easy though.
He's really cool but gets side tracked really easily. He says material at end of semester gets easier but in reality he grades the last two tests much harder and the grades prove it. Don't be deceived by how laid back he is to take this class lightly. Oh and the material is really boring but it's not his fault.
This is the second time I have taken a philosophy class with Dillon and it just got even better. I would love to take him again but I had a hard time finding a class with him again. He lectures each class from the reading assigned as homework. However, his lectures thrive off of participation to stimulate student's critical thinking skills.
If you come to class every day, you can't fail. This class is an easy A for anyone with half a brain. He's a good teacher, good guy and he makes it a smooth semester. Seriously, if you actually pay attention in class, the nightly homework should take you 3-5 minutes and you will get an A.
This class was by far the hardest class I have ever taken. It wasn't hard because of homework it was hard because it takes 100% focus on what you are reading, writing, and analyzing. The work load each week for this online course was very easy however you MUST understand everything being taught. He was helpful with everything and very understanding
Amazing professor. Lots of jokes during class to make it enjoyable. The material was difficult but he took the time to explain it and has office hours in case you need extra help.
Prof. Dillion is a great guy, I did poorly all on my own. He is willing to work with you and wants you to succeed. Don't take this class for an easy A. It's not going to happen. This class requires A LOT of thought and analyzing. I messed up and thought I would do fine with minimal effort. Schematizing arguments is what this class is based around.
He is such a caring professor!! He really goes out of his way to help you. Content is a little boring but its not bad. Definitely not a traditional philosophy class if thats what you're looking for. Workload is pretty light, just don't procrastinate things too much and you'll be fine.
Not an easy A. I took this class because it covers one of the English areas of the IGETC. I hate English, so I thought this would be an easier option for me, but I think I would have been better off taking English. There isn't too much work required for this class, but it is difficult and not anything you would know from prior knowledge.
Not a great prof. Lazy! He has mandatory discussion boards. He requires you to participate on examples. The problem is he only provides 3-10 examples FOR 20+ PEOPLE! Hard to participate when it was common for all examples to be completed the first day they are posted. Would not recommend for online if you take multiple courses. Very tough grader.
I had a great experience in the online class, it was better than my other online classes. He's super accessible, gave helpful feedback, was generous with grading, and was really active on the discussion board. I'm not sure why the student below thought there weren't enough examples-- I would post at the end of the week and had no trouble.
He really does give you the opportunity to do well in the class. You have plenty of time to complete assignments. He is willing to help students understand the material and will adjust the course based on how the students are responding. Overall, excellent professor who actually wants his students to do well.
One of the best professors I've had.
The best teacher I've ever had at Palomar by far. He makes the class very interesting and engaging, goes over everything you need to know in class, and even has lots of extra credit opportunities that are very easy. I learned a lot from him. Take this professor you won't regret it!!!!
I took his online class, and he's alright. I enjoy that his grading criteria is a little lower, and his lectures are accessible. My issue was the way he grades exams. They're not a definitively clear cut answer, so you pretty much have to answer what you think he wants to hear, not what you believe is correct. He's generally a good person
The PHIL 200 online class was great! There were LOTS of resources. Honestly, if you do the reading and watch the video lectures he posts, you'll have no trouble. I thought the exams were super easy. He actually posts video reviews of all the exams, so if you missed something you can always just watch the review.
This professor is great! His class has a high difficulty level, but if he sees the effort you put into the class you will pass. He is a very carig and genuine person and wants students to do well.
The classs itself is difficult, so you need to be proactive about staying on top of the assignments and readings. There is A LOT of reading but he's more than willing to help and gives good feedback that's encouraging. There is a lot of participation as well but it only helps with mastering the class concepts even more.
I liked this class a lot, even though it was intimidating at first. The professor offers many ways to understand the material - videos, written lectures, textbook, discussions, etc. It's one of those classes you should be able to pass as long as you try. Take advantage of all those extra credit assignments!
This professor was another one that I wish I could take all my classes with. He is amazing! His class can be difficult, but he is extremely helpful. He is accessible outside of class. Go to his office hours and he will talk you through everything you need to know. He is so personable and understanding. Would definitely take again!!!!
I took Phil200 online over the Summer semester, therefore the class was super fast pace and lots and lots of work! I dont know how his other PHIL classes work for the regular full semester but if youre thinking of taking this course over Summer I highly dont recommend. He grades super hard, you must check in everyday, and its so much busy work.
I just finished summer online PHIL 200. The class was really fun, and to be honest it was kind of a breeze. The homework and examples for each week don't take much time. He was also really good about getting back to me when I had a personal issue. I took him for intro too and wish I could take him again! He really cares about his students!
Took this class over the course of 8 week. Honestly, as long as you do the reading and make sure to read the lecture/watch the lecture video, you'll understand everything you should be doing. Super manageable and never had me stressed out once. I would definitely take his courses again in the future if given the option.
Amazing teacher. He's obviously very passionate about the subject, and is also ready and willing to help any student with any problem (even after the night class that I took). There is a bit of group work and there are tests, short writing assignments, and normal homework, but it's nothing too hard, and it's all based off of material he covered
Professor Emerick is awesome! He interacts with his students through the discussion boards and he has a good sense of humor. I never felt overwhelmed with the homework in his class. It's a reasonable amount of work to do per week. There are no quizzes, only 5 exams. He provides extra credit opportunities throughout the semester. Great professor!
Loved this prof!!! The only thing I wish was different was the fact that he splits each week in half (work is due Wednesday nights and Saturday nights). But you can tell he loves his job and I actually learned something from this class. Do the extra credit even if it's only 1 point - it adds up. And stay on top of the lectures/reading.
Always introduced himself as Instructor Dillon. Though I never met him in person, he seems very nice through the emails and videos he sent. He gives feedback often and responds to students posts on discussion boards. The reading in the textbook can be heavy, but will be easier if you break it up. Accessible through canvas and even video chat.
Prof. Emerick is awesome! His weekly video lectures & examples were super helpful. The exam review sessions were also very beneficial. He sprinkled jokes throughout his exams which made them feel less intimidating & stressful, I totally loved that. The book is boring. Plenty of extra credit, every pt matters! I would definitely take him again :)
Super helpful and easy to access out of class. So organized, there is no excuse for anyone to get lost. Lots of reading, but it really helps you to master the material. His video examples added so much clarity to some confusing concepts. Not to mention, there is so much extra credit and, in turn, helps you prepare for exams! Take his class!!!
Dillon is amazing! He's so funny and yet his lectures are really clear. All the readings are online, he designs funny essay and exam prompts. He cares about his students, has tons of office hours, and engages with them. 100% recommend this class. He will spend hours explaining things if you don't understand. Definitely a diamond in the rough at cc.
Professor Dillon is a great one! He truly cares about his students and ensures that they understand. I liked how his online course is outlined. Though, the material is tough. His assignments are out of 1/2 points so it is crucial to do well on the exams because your grade can go down very quickly. It's a bit unbalanced but he is a great professor.
An awesome professor! He's great at explaining and taking you through he subject even if he sometimes goes onto tangents. He's patient and really wants the students to succeed and will help you along the way to get there.
Professor Emerick has great lectures, but the material is challenging. He grades very late, and assigned five papers throughout the semester. He's very nice and easy going, but the tests have the power to really hurt your grade. If you like to read, this is the class for you.
Professor Emerick is a very kind man and very passionate about Philosophy! Easy to get along with and straight forward lectures. Lots and lots of reading articles from different philosophers, which can get overwhelming. Luckily he drops two hw assignments, one exam, and three short essays, meaning you dont have to do those! I recommend overall.
I took the class and he is a really sweet guy. He is always happy and interactive with the class. The course itself isn't hard and the assignments aren't too long. One of the better teachers I have had. Still failed due to my lack of work ethic. Even with an F I still loved the class and would take it again. (Might have to)
Professor Emerick's class is very organized and his powerpoints are clear and well structured. Each week there were two discussion boards and a homework assignment. There were a good amount of essays, but they were all pretty easy. I highly recommend taking Professor Emerick's class, as he gives great feedback so you can do well in the class.
This class was pretty manageable as long as you look at the calendar in the syllabus to see what assignments, specifically writing assignments, are coming up. There were 5 writing assignments and 5 exams which weren't too difficult, as long as you read the textbook. He gives great feedback which really helped me learn! I recommend this professor.
Professor Emerick is a hilarious professor with the ability to break down complex philosophical content and make it more easily digestible for his students. He sprinkles in jokes/funny stories throughout the lecture, and keeps the class engaged by allowing students to share their thoughts on the lesson. Would definitely take the course again!
Professor Emerick BEST TEACHER EVER.he is very good a teaching he engages with the students and he. he gives out extra credit he also says that he wants to be a JC penny modal but we got him told him he should be a old navy modal. you should take his class you will have fun and learn a lot. i would defiantly take his class again if i can. he
He is very funny and engaging, there isn't really a time in this class where you''ll get bored because he just likes to crack jokes a lot or talk about anything if prompted. He does assign a lot of hw but those will help you w/ grades. Only con is that the writing assignments at the end came really fast back to back-ish but overall fun class.
Professor Dillon is great. He is really passionate about teaching, he gives great feedback and really cares about his students. I took the 8 week summer class and it was a lot! I wouldn't have taken it if I was working full time and or taking multiple classes. But a full semester should be easy. Study the material and you'll be fine.
The professor was very good, but the class was incredibly difficult for me, I truly bombed the class, but he passed me with a C, so I'm thankful.
I took this class over the summer which was very difficult. At first, I thought the reading was optional, but I bought the book in case I needed it. I don't recommend not reading the book but it worked out for me. There are about 4 essays the first 2 are worth 5 points and the last 2 are worth 25. I thought they were straightforward and did well.
hands down one of the funniest and kindest professors i've had! his class is very easy, just his lectures alone are enough to do well in the class, just make sure to pay attention to his examples! he also gives lots of extra credit opportunities and is super understanding!
Dillon was an amazing professor. He is incredibly down-to-earth and caring. He doesn't have a superiority complex, you can tease him and mess around and he'll join you. The coursework itself is incredibly easy. As long as you pay attention to his lectures you're set. I never read the textbook but I got above a 100%. He was a great teacher.
He goes by Dillon, his middle name. He is not a disciplinarian and has a sense of humor. He would like everyone to have fun in his class, but does understand if it isn't your thing. Just wants you to do the reading and participate in class. He is always glad to answer questions and go over examples as necessary, so if you are confused, speak up!
Easy enough class yet still somewhat challenging. +87%=A, textbook is helpful, 5 exams, 2 5-page papers, 2 hw, and 4 discussion assignments a week (took during summer for 8 weeks). I wouldn't recommend saving all your work for the end of the week, otherwise, this is a slightly challenging but fun class emphasizing the philosophy of language.
I hate this class more than anything, but it is not because of the professor. He's able to make it somewhat enjoyable. This feels like a critical grammar class rather than critical thinking.
Ryan Dillon is the most kindest and understanding professor I have every had. personally I should've started my materials and all the hard work earlier, since I was lackadaisical and too much was on my shoulders I could've had a better grade. As long as you read the text book and understand it it'll be easy.
Professor Dillon is a fun, down-to-earth teacher who makes philosophy engaging. His lectures are enough to do well, but Unstuckstudy is a great study aid too. Just stay focused and you'll likely get an A.
I love Dillon! He gets difficult ideas across very easily and is hilarious. You'll feel like best friends with him when the whole class is in on a joke. Usually only 1 homework assignment a week, and they're a little tricky sometimes but never too bad. Take his class! You won't regret it!
Prof Emerick was great! I made great use of his video examples. However, this class is SO boring. The content learned feels anything but useful. It was tiring at times, but it felt easy by the time you actually did the assignments. He is great at answering any questions you have, so be sure to ask. 5 exams, 2 weekly discussions, 1 weekly homework
Ridiculously confusing material and every question on homework and tests had a part A-Z. For this being a beginner class it seemed advanced. Also made me hate critical thinking.
Homework and a quiz every worth 1-2 points, 5 analysis assignments worth 10, and 5 exams each worth 25. The points being low made it tougher to land A's, so do the textbook reading. Sometimes it would take him a few days to reply, but is great when you get ahold of him. He's funny and wants to help you
I wish I could give a better understanding of this teacher... but to give an idea, it is Thanksgiving week, meaning, there are only 2 weeks left to the semester when we come back, and he hasn't graded ANYTHING. I feel this is pretty unacceptable. Lots of readings and about 3-4 pages total to write every week in different assignments.
I took his class based on the ratings, and honestly, I don't understand. On December 20th, the last day of the semester, this teacher hasn't graded half of our homework, between 3-4 every week. He basically asks you to read and write about it. I feel like philosophy isn't how it should be taught. Conversation, videos, lectures are completely absent
A fun and easy going prof! It was really interesting stuff. The textbook and Canvas had all the resources I needed, and the tutorials were helpful. All the revies were posted right away, and I found the tests kind of easy.
Workload was light, all the readings were provided to us on canvas. My only complaint is that nothing was graded for me until about 5 weeks into the 8 week quarter.
