Simply amazing!
Horrible, the majority of my Math 104 class failed and had to re-take it like me! He should NOT be teaching.
Entirely useless. The math department writes the tests and Downie has no clue what is on them. Likewise, on his assignments he often puts problems on them that aren't even out of the right book. Avoid at all costs.
Talked incredibly quiet, you almost couldn't hear him. He didn't spend any time reviewing and he didn't actually teach half of what was on the test. He wouldn't warn you if he hadn't gotten far enough in the book in class either. I passed his class, but barely and not with any of his help.
Ryan is a pleasant person and a knowledgeable mathematician. However, he seems inexperienced and not authoritative in his teachig. If you put enough time into doing book reading & exercises (at least one hour daily), you'll do fine in his class. Make sure to pay attention, as his lectures aren't always particularly engaging.
DON'T DO IT. Take Kelly A. Lynn instead. This guy didn't even open the book the first ten days and quizzed over stuff he hadn't even taught yet. The majority of the class was lost on where he was going because he was teaching us 6th grade all over again. I dropped it. I wasn't going to waste my time with a guy who can't teach.
Seemed like he knows what he's talking about, he just seemed inexperienced.
Simply horrible, doesn't know how to teach. I had to retake this class because I couldn't understand him and his teaching style. Do not take math from him!
Excellent! The previous rater probably didn't come to class or pay attention. I suppose it's always someone else's fault.
Good instructor. He takes attendance everyday. I don't recall using the textbook during class. As long as you complete the ungraded homework and study hard, you'll be good :-).
Greatly disliked this class. I attended almost every day, did all the homework, and took every quiz and test, yet I ended up failing at midterm and had to retake with another teacher. Seems very inexperienced and does not do a good job of explaining. Relies solely on examples to teach, which was not enough for me. DO THE NONGRADED HW!
Meh. I worked my butt off in this class (asked questions and went to the Math lab) and none of it stuck. Nice guy but teaches you stuff that's not going to be on the test, so expectations are high. Gives you problems that are irrelevant to class. I was learning the problems he taught that we are learning right meow in pre-Calculus. No..just no.
Great person and good teacher but he didn't write the tests - the math department did so he didn't know what to teach. I understood what he taught but not the tests.... He also LOVES to convert everything to fractions rather than use decimals. If you prefer that, then he's great, but I don't. :( But he really care about his students. :)
Absolutely the worse teacher. When I did attend class, it was so boring that I fought to fall asleep and I LOVE math. Not to mention actually getting the instructor to email you or call you back is non-existent. I had to drop the class do to issues in my personal life and couldn't ever get ahold of the professor to request a Z grade. Absolute worst.
Very intelligent guy, loooooves teaching about this, you can really tell he's got a passion for math in general. But I feel that he was inexperienced in his teaching methods, and I fell behind very quickly and did not understand the material. He teaches quickly, but his tests were very fair (as long as you worked hard & studied)
material thought in class presented in a way easier format than what's on the test!!! I have done all my homework and took a lot of notes in class, but all tests were like 10 times harder then what he taught in class and what we practiced! Just don't take him Don't take him unless you absolutely have to!
Ryan is passionate about math, that is certain. He was entertaining to watch, very helpful for anyone who had questions. He expressed his desire for everyone to understand. Tests were not complicated if you understood the work/lecture. He seemed suave and confident as well, very pleased with the experience.
Professor Downie is a very intelligent guy, transparent, and easy going. The material can be confusing but he is open to questions people have and does his best to explain. His tests are VERY fair if you have a BASIC understanding on the material. Overall a good professor.
Love this guy! He is very friendly and really cares about his students. Math will always be hard but he tries his best to explain it all. He is very neat & particular & organized, which is very, very, very nice :) I've talked to him outside of class before and he was very helpful and caring. He makes math a little more fun.
Professor Downie is tough but fair. He has high expectations but I feel like it's because he knows we're capable (if you put in the effort). He explains why things work and is super helpful. Hard class but I learned a ton! Hint for success... go to class and pay attention. Ask questions and do the reading/HW. He's a great math teacher!
he is an awful math teacher.
Younger instructor so he can be quite funny, and rolls with the punches really well. Very approachable guy. He knows his math, but has a hard time explaining it in a way that makes sense. Often gets distracted with the tough decision of what letter to use for the variable. Doesn't give test reviews and doesn't grade on a curve.
Professor Downie is a wonderful guy! Math is not my forte, but if he sees you putting in the work and effort outside of class it will pay off for you. He is a very likable guy and easy to understand while teaching. I would definitely recommend him to anybody who is willing to put in some work for their grade.
Great Teacher! Always willing to help! Math is not a easy subject but with his help it gets easier.
DONT TAKE HIM. His "lectures" are easy, but his tests come out of nowhere. I knew most of the stuff he taught previously and the tests were nothing like the homework nor what we talked about in class. The book is useless so don't buy it either. You'll never use it and it's over $100 in the bookstore and they won't buy it back.
Thoroughly enjoyed him as a professor. It's not an easy A class. Take the time to ask questions and try to connect with him! He's hilarious and is very passionate about math! But, don't buy the book. Not necessary.
Downie is a great teacher, and will explain his subject wonderfully if you ask the right questions.
He is a great teacher and will do everything in his power to make sure you understand. His tests are hard and are every Friday but if you go to class you will be fine. He drops the lowest two test grades at the end of the quarter. His projects are difficult however, he doesn't give a midterm.
He is such an amazing teacher! I wish i could take him for every math class!! Do not buy the book though you wont need it, wait and buy the online code!
He is a funny teacher who makes lectures fun and interesting. He doesn't require attendance, but go to class or else you won't pass the class. He is a tough grader and doesn't give any extra credit or test curve. Don't buy the book, he puts his own version of the book online. If your ever late to class, he won't care, especially if you have coffee
I liked Downie's style and humor! He's always available after hrs for those wanting clarification of concepts. Doesn't assign a lot of homework, or require students to buy the book--which for some is great, others not so great . If your aware of your learning style and apply yourself accordingly you will succeed. Ask questions, he always clarifies!
I would absolutely love to take him again, by far my favorite math teacher here at Eastern!
Ryan Downie is by far the best math instructor I've had at EWU. He will always clarify things for you if you ask in class or in his office. He gives participation points, and takes attendance daily, so don't miss class! he's also very clear in what he wants from you, and his tests are very fair. He is also very good about giving partial credit.
He is a great teacher! He was always willing to help you with anything, and he always clarifies questions. Assigns barely any homework, but gives plenty of practice in class. Funny guy. Don't buy the textbook, he writes his own. Fair grader, if he can tell you are headed in the right direction with a problem, he will give you credit.
I've always had a really hard time with math and this is the second teacher I've had that made it understandable. First I've met at the college level . In Ryan's class, everything made sense, he made everything click and he gave funny lectures. He's also available outside of class if you need extra help.
Gives partial credit.
Ryan was an awesome professor. Gives good feedback. Explains problems really well and willing to help.
Overall he was a GREAT professor! Recommend not to miss class!
Hes a very nice guy but the class is a annoying at some times because of how it is taught and structured. Ryan is a good professor to to take it with, he has useful office hours.
Professor Downie is a great teacher. He makes topics relatable to real life and makes nerdy jokes. He is available for further explanation on topics and genuinely wants to see you pass, but grades fairly according to his syllabus.
Ryan Downie is by far an amazing professor. He explains everything so well, he makes sure everyone is on the same page. There is a total of four tests and a final, there isn't very much homework. For the test there isn't really a study guide he just gives you a checklist of things you should know for the test.
Downie is a great professor, he wants his students to do well and encourages you to visit him during office hours if you need extra help. A lot of the homework is on my math lab, but worth a very small percentage (5%) so he really leaves it up to you take make sure you complete handouts or worksheets given in class. Attendance is important.
Downie is great! I got into his class late and was able to catch up easily. He was very easy to work with when it came to extra help and making sure myself and anyone in the class was able to get a good footing on the material. Posted helpful videos and notes on Canvas about lecture material each week.
Professor Downie is an adorable nerd-type who makes math as interesting and understandable as possible. He wants you to pass and understand math. I highly recommend taking his classes!
Ryan loves math, and knows what he's talking about. Doesnt grade practice work until the end of each unit, so you don't know what your doing wrong. He writes his own textbook, and requires reading, but its not super easy to understand.
He really wants you to understand the material. If you don't, ask questions and he's super, super helpful. He doesn't make you feel stupid at all which I appreciate. He's awesome!
Downie is a good teacher and genuinely wants to help students. Never makes anyone feel dumb for asking questions and is very helpful when students do not understand.
Downie is by far my favorite math professor I have ever had. He's funny and really want's you to understand the material. Bought the Web assign and didn't even use it. does have good practice problems though. Everything he teaches are in lectures, be in class!! very nice guy and he'll make you laugh. Has the youth of a youngster.
This teacher proved himself to be very caring, very patient Genuinely cares about his students. Try your best and attend class Ask questions, he will be there. He wears cool ties and seems to be passionate about his teaching He can pass as one of the students too, as he looks very young Didn't really need the book, just focus on his lectures and hw
I would really recommend any student to take a class with Ryan, he is also gives extra credit if you submit your phone at the beginning of class, his lectures are well explained and he is also hilarious. He also pays attention to detail and very patient with students when asking questions. He has a kind heart as well. from Angie and Andrea..
I don't recommend this professor to anyone. The worst math professor I have ever had. Unfair grader and makes the course harder than it appears , and his tests are very hard. Do not take him unless you want to fail the whole course.
While he is a nice person, his way of teaching the material is very hard. He uses different symbols than the book and his examples do not resemble the book or webassign at all. His language on tests is even harder. With the test being weighted so heavy and not enough points on homework it is very hard to pass this class.
He is nice but goes too far into theorems/explanations while not providing relevant information as to what will be on the exams. Exams are way harder than what is taught in class making them very difficult to do well on (everyone had to redo 2nd exam) Final exam was cumulative and study guide was not provided until around 8pm the night before exam.
I must admit, the negative reviews I see here must be students who skipped class often or never asked for help. Mr. Downie is one of the better math teachers I have taken from EWU. He goes out of his way to help students prepare, even doing a last minute, optional, review session for the final. His door is almost always open.
He is clearly super passionate about Calculus, which makes the class 100x more enjoyable! While the material is somewhat difficult, he does a great job at explaining things and provides proofs for most theorems. Doing homework is necessary to do well on exams. Would recommend!
He's good at answering questions, doesn't belittle students or anything like that. He is really great about explaining why formulas/equations work out the way they do - he helps to understand the logic of math. If it speaks to his quality, his class was the first time in my life that I haven't hated math.
Excellent professor. Took him for Calculus I. I don't see any downsides in taking him, except the way he explained things seemed too broad to me. His tests were actually a bit challenging, but I've had worse (Physics). He said we'd have pop quizzes but honestly we only had one. Study optimization and related rates inside-out! Overall, good prof.!
Don't get me wrong Ryan is a great guy. He knows his stuff and he actually cares about his students. The class is still difficult. The way he teaches the course is too in depth for me and I have hard time staying focused in the class. He is more than happy to help you if needed. I personally would try to find another professor with better ratings.
Tests are very different. He makes you explain why things work which makes sense. If you go to study hours with him it definitely helps. Hes funny and doesnt make you feel stupid.
He is awful. I would not recommend taking this professor! He makes it seems like he cares, but towards the end of the quarter his true side starts to show. I've sent him multiple messages on canvas ( usually he responds fairly quickly) but have not received an email back from him. I cannot stand his awful teaching style as it is hard to follow.
There are three tests and they count for most of your grade, not very pleasing when each section is taught very differently from each other. He is very inconsistent and changes how he teaches almost on a daily basis
Winter 2020- Math has never been my strongest subject, so I spent a fair amount of time in office hours. He was very approachable, kind, and patient with me. He has very in depth explanations that help you understand *why* a formula/method works. Attendence isn't graded, but I only used the book for the access code. I much prefered his lectures.
Professor Downie is passionate about Math and teaching, he loves math and wants you to understand and love it too. He is willing to take time to answer questions in class and also is available during office hours. His tests can be hard, but he is willing to clarify things with you if you are not understanding the way a problem is written.
I am a student who never has a B with 2 weeks left in a math class, but proefessor Downie make it pretty easy and its an online. Yes you do a lot of work, but thats typical in a math class. The best part exams and the final only count for 60% while still a lot you won't find much less. He explains in depth and helps you understand the material.
I think the only reason professor Downie gets any poor reviews is because he teaches math and a lot of people dont like math. He is an amazing teacher and cares about his students. Hes super helpful, loves questions and if you pay attention and try in his class youll be ok. Im not a math person but I would highly recommend this professor.
Pro Downie really cares about his students and will take the time to explain the homework if you need help although this is a hard math course and he is more advanced so if you're not the best at math I don't suggest taking it with him.
Very close to finishing the quarter, finally just need to do the final that's in 5 days and that's it you're done.. right? Literally puts 4 assignments that have more than 2,000 questions all combined. YES, you heard me 2,000 math problems. Your computer doesn't load up the questions or even the answers, and you left him two emails, doesn't reply!!
Downie is a really great teacher. He cares a lot about students and is willing to work with you at any time if you are confused. The class will be difficult and he will make you work for your grade but he makes all his expectations clear and he tests exactly based on what he teaches.
Wonderful teacher. He takes the time in his lectures to explain concepts in a way that actually makes sense. He's always encouraging student participation in discussions, and loves students' questions. 2nd best math teacher I've had. Only bad thing is that he's really bad about responding to messages. You'd be better off asking questions in person.
This professor is unorganized and not clear in his direction. On multiple occasions this quarter I have had to email him because he assigned work but didn't give due dates, assigned quizzes, but didn't open access. He will also post assigned the day or day before they are due, last minute change the date things are due including the date of exams
Professor Downie is a great professor, but if you need help you have to ask. If you miss one day of class it's hard to catch back up. It's a difficult class and have to do a lot of work, but he does his best to try to help you understand. Lots of online homework that he doesn't talk about in class so check canvas a lot.
This class is extremely difficult and there was only one time when someone scored a 90% on an exam. It looks like the entire class in general couldn't grasp anything Downie lectures in class. He's not awful but he isn't the greatest. His feedback on paper is NOT good though, he just puts question marks with no actual feedback, help, or answers.
Unorganized, bad at explaining, and moves way too fast from one thing to the next. Expect to do most of your learning at home rather than in the actual class. The majority of my classmates have taken the class twice. That shouldnt be acceptable, he is to blame for that. I got a 5/10 on 1 of 4 exams and was ABOVE average. Steer clear if you can!
Math is always a tricky subject, I had to retake this class and Professor Downie is truly caring and WANTS you to succeed. Attendance is not mandatory, but why would you skip a class that in general a hard class? He is always willing to help and will explain things in different ways if you are confused. Also a friendly grader (partial credit!)! 5/5
Math 200 with Ryan Downie was the worst class I have ever taken. Completely disorganized and chaotic.
Super hard. If you email him he doesn't respond. Would be better if it was in person
Professor Downie does a lot of proofs to explain a topic, and at times this is very confusing. I wish we did more practice problems in this class. On the plus side, you can ask a question anytime and he will make sure you understand it well. He is super easy on grading, and will give you most points if you show work. Overall super nice and helpful.
He is genuinely so nice. I retook his class because I failed the first time, he checked in on me every time I saw him even in passing. He really cares.
good person but not a good professor, confused us all the time by giving examples that barely helped. what was taught in lectures was completely different from what was on exams, quizzes, and assignments. Takes forever for him to reply to emails, so I always had to wait until class time to ask questions. Highly recommend Chegg.
Go to class everyday. The majority of the homework is given in the class, and a lot of people didn't get it in time. Other than that, he is very lenient in grading, just make sure to show lots of work. Exams are worth a ton, 80 percent of grade, but the lowest midterm score can be replaced with your final score under some conditions. Lectures, meh.
Great professor. Would definitely take a class from him again. Only thing I didn't love was the online math book he used.
Ryan is super nice and really cares about his students. The tests were extremely hard though and he always grades the out of 10. Good luck
Get ready for emails to sit for 2 weeks without responses
He was great for Precalc, his grading was super forgiving yet picky at the same time, he marked up my entire test and I still got an 85 on it, yet not anybody scored perfectly. His office hours were super helpful with one on one to understand things I was confused about. He is funny and if you actually participate, you'll find he's a good teacher.
He's a great guy but I wouldn't take his class again. Exams were extremely hard and he refused to curve any of them (including the final) regardless of how bad the scores were. Homework is difficult and often does not relate to the material on the exams. The course was very scattered and made it difficult to follow along.
Ryan doesn't really teach more than once a week. I watched about eight YouTube videos that he linked instead. Basically a textbook course, but the content on the exams isn't in the textbook or ALEKS modules. He is really nit-picky on points. Is slow to reply, and was almost 20 minutes late to our final exam. Doesn't really care about his students.
Man i don't even know where to start with this guy, as someone that has never had below an A- for a grade this class surely gave me a run for my money. His lectures and aleks homework do absolutely nothing for the 3 exams, and the final was probably the hardest test i've ever taken, I somehow pulled out an A in his class but I would not take him.
He's great and extra willing to help
He was a great professor and engaged with the students in his class well. If you don't show up it's going to be difficult to stay on track. I would recommend to others. A very forgiving grader.
Mr. Downie is a great teacher and teaches well. Unfortunately if you missed the fundamentals of math then this class will be hard for you since there are only quizes and exams that are being graded and hw doesn't count as part of the grade ( at least in my case). But amazing teacher and very sweet as well as gives good feedback if asked questions.
For his first time teaching Calc IV, Ryan did a good job covering the fundamentals. Tests aren't too bad, and he is generous on grading. If you have questions, he is always willing help answer it. Great prof. for math. He records his lectures as well if you need to go back and strengthen your understanding. Lecture also heavily reflects textbook.
Very good professor. He is good at lecturing, approachable, and is always willing to help students. He also allowed a note sheet on exams, as well as corrections for point retrieval on exams and homework. You need to attend class to pass, but I wouldn't worry if you have to miss a day.
Amazing Teacher, 10/10 would recommend and make sure to ask him for help when it's needed
Best math teacher I have had. Also, will give you more time on HW if needed.
Prof. Downie was incredible! As someone who struggles in math, he made it so easy. I went to his office hours a LOT, but he was always happy to help. He made funny jokes during lectures, and allowed a full page of notes for the tests. Final was tough, but he's an awesome professor. I'd recommend him for anyone.
Tough course. Studying and attendance are a must. He does allow note sheets for all exams.
