He is the best Comm professor I've had yet....very entertaining, yet he knows his stuff!!!
He goes over alot of information but does still go into detail over everything. He'll also take more time if things are unclear or the class has more interest in something. He also has a great open door policy for non-class issues. (politics,Fan.Football)
He is definitely one of the best teachers I have ever had and I truly enjoyed his class last Spring. Take him if you can, he is awesome!
He is a very funny man. He speaks well... minus some dergatory terms used in lecture. He is also very approachable, I would recommend having him as a teacher.
He knows his stuff, and you can learn and do well on his tests if you listen& go to class. Beware of his tests. There are not many, therefore there is a ton of info in class notes to go over before a test. That is if you went to class and took a billion pages of notes that were identical to those in the book. He's cool though, made me laugh a lot.
awesome teacher, good speaker keeps interest in the subjectmatter
Ryan is a awesome prof........his classes aren't the easiest though! Good Luck! :)
Great teacher open to conversations on anything, takes his**** seriously though, which is appreciated.
I thought I'd really enjoy this class since I'd taken Human Comm theory from him. This class was a complete let down. The ENTIRE semester was groups from class giving presentations about various interpersonal comm theories. He didn't teach - the class did.
this is a man who loves what he does. he's in the know. he's approachable & helpful. also an entertainer. sometimes goes off on redundant stories for too long & makes sweeping claims to interest the audience at times. Definitely an amazing prof. & highly recommended
He really made the class entertaining and enjoyable!
What an amazing professor! The best I think I've had. Has such a unique way of relating to the students and loves his work! TAKE A CLASS WITH RYAN! you will not regret it.
Very nice guy.
Very nice man. Keeps the class interested. Says pretty much what is on his mind, very animated. I would recommend this class for anyone but especially freshman/sophomores.
Very nice man. Kept my interest at almost all times. He moves around the lecture hall to include everyone which I really liked. One of the best speakers I have ever heard. I highly recommend him.
This guy is hilarious. He keeps the class interesting and fun. Tests were a little harder than expected, but overall I loved it.
One of the best story tellers I've ever heard. Made everything he talked about seem interesting.
He's really funny and keeps class interesting. However when he did get down to business the lectures were somewhat hard to understand. I felt his tests were hard.
Let's just say that this class wasn't my forte but he still kept it pretty interesting. He has the same tried and true examples that really help you understand the concepts.
Fantastic teacher! Very funny! Sparks interest in the subject, the absolute reason I decided to become a comm minor, I relates subject to his personal life-which makes examples stick!
good teacher until you get to the tests which are ridiculous.
Really enjoyable professor, keeps the material from seeming dry - good sense of humor, good story-teller, very laid-back style of teaching... however, make sure you don't take that for granted, or assume he's easy, since his tests are very in-depth, and can be difficult if you don't keep up with the reading. I'd recommend him, though. Funny guy.
interesting lectures, class is fun to go to, tests are hard even though the class seems easy.
Great teacher! Fun times during class but hard tests. I highly recommend him.
Excellent speaker-- obviously very well-versed in the ways of keeping an audience captivated. The material seems easy enough, and down-right fun to learn at times, but the tests are difficult. Study well!
Ryan has a lot of great stories. Lectures contain stuff not in the book. He want you to know both lecture material and book material for the tests, and he doesn't provide a study guide. As long as you study hard, you'll do fine.
Very funny guy. His class is very fun to go to, as you should because a lot of the tests are based on lectures. The material is easy enough, but be sure to study it. The tests aren't THAT difficult. Some of his jokes were quite offensive.
Very funny professor. I loved going to his classes because he tells great stories to better illustrate the ideas. Tests are all lecture based (and pretty easy), and the lectures have nothing to do with the book. Overall, great professor and great guy.
Awesome prof!!!!!
Best professor I've ever had!!! He knows his stuff and will help you in any way he can of you don't get it. He is extremely easy to talk to. His lectures are always interesting. I highly recommend taking one of his classes even if you aren't a comm major!! Goei is by far the best!
He is a great professor...I would highly recommend taking him. He's very enthusiastic and helpful!
Ryan is so personable and will gain your respect within minutes of meeting him. He has a lot of knowledge to offer you if you're willing to put the work in. Not to mention he is very easy on the eye!
Goei is a great guy! He is absolutely hilarious and he has so much insight on life. Skim the textbook, because it is helpful knowing the vocab that he uses in class. His tests, though, are lecture based with a few questions coming from the book. I never had a problem going to his lectures because I knew it would be a good time. Great guy and class!
Amazing teacher would be the best way to describe him. Never a dull moment in class. Never even thought of skipping his class.
Very fun teacher, I actually looked forward to going to class. Very few homework assignments, difficult tests. But the class is almost worth it. Very funny guy, makes class interesting and makes you laugh a lot. Material is also interesting. DEFINATELT recommend this class.
amazing professor, relates to class, lectures are very interesting and funny, makes you laugh. would for sure recommend this class with him, amazing guy, very minimal homework
Really nice, funny prof! Tests are pretty difficult for a 1000 level class. Attend lectures because thats what he bases his test off of. I would take him again!
Exams are extremely difficult, the average class score was 70% on the first exam. You have 4 exams each worth 35 points t/f and multiple choice. Very poor communication if you have an issue he doesn't reply or seem to care.
Great teacher! Super funny and has great stories. By far the most entertaining class I've had at UMD so far. Don't get caught up studying the notes, most of his test are based off concepts found in the book.
One of the best teachers at UMD. He understand what he is teaching and really wants his students to have a positive experience. I would highly recommend taking classes with him.
The tests are based off the 10 concepts he mentions over about 8 class periods in the form of stories that may or may not be applicable. Too many guest lectures. Homework isn't graded before the test, therefore it's hard to tell if you fully grasp a concept. TA's are helpful, but if your busy during their hours good luck. Funny guy, bad class.
Goei is an awesome guy, and knows how to make his classes fun. Some will argue that his tests are tough, but the answers are so easy to overthink. Go to class, turn in a few short papers and enjoy.
Goei is absolutely amazing and he knows how to make the class interesting. It actually upsets me when I have to miss class; I love how he relates everything to a personal story of his and he always makes the class laugh. You can't get an A on the tests by just listening to the lectures, though, you do need to read the book to do well on the tests.
One of my favorite professors. He is hilarious and loves to get off topic. Class is mostly him talking and telling stories. He likes to involve the students so be prepared to raise your hand. Hands down, great professor.
Honestly, I was expecting this class to be extremely easy, but it is not. I've studied for the exams a few days ahead and still do not do well. He also is kind of ignorant so if you do not like professors like that, you will not like him. Overall a fun class, but just had to put a lot more effort than I had wanted to.
If you want a class that will fly by take any of Goei's classes. He makes the lectures so interesting that you can't help but lose track of time. He also makes everything very humorous and keeps the students engaged. Definitely my favorite professor at Duluth.
Makes a pretty boring basic 1000 level class into a entertaining lecture. Easily one of the funniest professors I have had here at UMD. Tests are a little on the difficult side but at the same time aren't the worst things in the world. Just study for a couple hours and you'll be good to go.
My favorite prof. He doesn't like phones or even laptops or note taking. This is because he wants to talk and connect with you, rather than talk at you and have you busy copying things down. He makes every lecture interesting and relates terms to real life. Lectures have made me laugh and made me cry. love u goei
Ryan was hilarious. He made class incredibly enjoyable, which was nice since it would have otherwise been a bore. He's very fair when it comes to grading, and willing to help whenever you need it. He's very open about himself, and his stories are hilarious! Just be sure to study for the tests!
Lectures are fun to attend. The tests are hard for a 1000 level class.
Goei was one of my favorite professors at UMD! Don't go into this class thinking it's an easy A, he'll make you work for a good grade. Lectures get long, but don't skip class as your notes are crucial. Tells good stories that later reflect on questions to the test! Overall great guy and very funny!
Great teacher with awesome stories but the tests are brutally tough, make sure you pay attention in class, read the book AND study
Best professor. An amazing lecturer and clearly loves his job. So much respect for him and will definitely take another one of his classes.
Hands down. One of the very best professors at UMD. If you get the chance, take a class with Goei!
Great personality but not easy to get ahold of outside of class. If you need help, contacting a TA is a must. Lectures are lighthearted and funny but also essential to the exams. Gives guided notes but no study guides, so take them seriously.
Was a fairly easy class. Definitely need to put in the time to make sure you understand everything to do really well. If you just show up to class you will definitely pass.
Ryan Goei is by far one of the best professors at UMD. He is well respected and really tailors his classes well. He creates open conversation to learn the subject and takes what you discuss to use on the test. He is hilarious and knows how to keep your attention even in a 2 hour long class. I also have him as an advisor as I really trust his input.
If you have the chance to take Intercultural Communications, do it! Ryan is an amazing professor and cares a lot about his students. The class was based around doing fun activities with people of different race/ethnicity/religion then you and seeing how much you really have in common. Amazing course with few assignments, but mandatory attendance
Goei is awesome. Had him for two classes: Human Comm Theory and The Hawaiian Intercultural Experience domestic study abroad trip/class. You cannot go wrong with this professor, he brings more to the table than your stereotypical lecture. Get to know him and he will give you key insights that will help you throughout your life in the long run.
Goei is great! He sometimes goes off on tangents but somehow relates it back to the topic at hand. His lectures are unconventional but refreshing to have a more relaxed and interactive lecture. The material is easy and presented in a fun and understandable way. Would take this class again!
Honestly, his attitude was what turned me off from the class. I was a senior, and he assumed that everyone in there were freshmen who didn't know what they were doing when it came to taking a college course. He would beg for feedback during lecture, and then would make fun of what people would say. I couldn't believe he was a COMM professor!
Ryan doesnt actually start lecturing until the last 15 minutes of class. He talks about everything but what is on the notes and he is hard to keep up with. Doesnt let you use technology and his tests are very hard.
Really great teacher who really motivates students to make a difference within their communities.
If you go to class, print the note sheets and study them you will do fine in this class. I am senior that had to take this after I switched majors. To all Freshman coming in, do not be intimidated by previous reviews. Just don't expect an A if you never go to class. Class is not that difficult, exams test exactly whats covered in class
Everyone that says this class is hard expected to never show up and get an A. Freshman, this is an interesting and thought provoking course that you will enjoy, and the easy A will follow. Show up to class, every class, and review notes before tests. You'll get an A. If you don't show up, you'll probably flunk, so keep that in mind.
I can't understand why so many people like him. He is cocky and hard to relate to. He talks about pointless stories up to the last minute making attending class some days pointless. Easy concepts though and TA's have coffee shop hours you can attend.
Really good prof, definitely knows his stuff. Good lectures. You don't need to go to class, but you should anyways. Not an easy A but definitely tough to fail.
He doesn't use technology, so there are no powerpoints. He doesn't take attendance but he also lectures and some of the things he says are not in the book. He does go on pointless rants sometimes, but he engages with the class as much as he can. This class is tough because it's based on a few assignments plus the 4 exams.
I took his COMM class which was pretty great! We would talk about racial issues then go out on field trips! Definitely recommend this class we would go out to kayak or even roller blading. Fun teacher and very fun class!!
Ryan is a great professor and his lectures were always very interactive and interesting. Now, if you do not go to class, you will struggle in this course. The lecture is definitely the biggest contribution to you learning the material. Also, the homework is easy and there is not much of it. Very difficult but interesting class, take good notes!
I really liked Ryan's lectures because he made them interesting and relatable. The tests were the worst part of this class and i found them very hard to do, but overall it was an enjoyable class. He tells you at the start that the tests are going to be hard & he doesn't expect you to come to class. Hes a funny guy but going to class you will pass
Goei is a solid professor and I enjoyed taking comm 1000 with him. He doesn't use powerpoint or any screens during class, so come prepared having read the notes ahead of time and you'll do well. If you just want to pass the class, you probably don't need the textbook. If you want an A, go to class and read the book
Professor Goei is a gem. Some people might not like that he doesnt use any tech when he lectures but youll catch on quickly. He uses stories to connect to the textbook which is great, it helps when learning the material. Be prepared for the first exam, I thought I studied enough but being able to apply terms to real life will go a long way.
Ryan is one of the best professors in the Communication department. He does not have PowerPoints, all his lectures are just him talking. Sounds scary, but if you show up and print off the chapter outlines he provides, it is an easy class.
Goei is an amazing professor. Tests/homework can be a bit difficult but if you reach out to the TA's about their expectations of the hw they will give you an A. He is one of the funniest people I have ever met and he is relatable to college students. has many great stories that relate the the material. Hoping I can take more classes with him.
I have to say I really did not enjoy this class or learn anything worthwhile. Goei's lectures are 30% actual work and a good 70% spent on irrelevant stories, fluffing his ego, and shaming people into seeing things his way. Not a great environment for everyone in the room to be learning. Tests are ridiculous. I recommend finding another Comm class.
I believe Prof. Goei is convinced that he has such a great teaching system that he can't see what's currently wrong with it. He's mostly off-topic during lectures, he doesn't double check his tests so there's always something wrong on it, and he has his TA's (students just like you) grade your papers, affecting your grade for the course.
You need to pay attention, attend all classes, and take notes in order to pass. Theres reflective writings once a week, these are an easy 10 points. But the three tests and the 3 papers are challenging. The TA grade the papers, so youre not 100% getting good feedback. The tests is based off of his lecture, not the book.
Goei is an awesome professor and tells super interesting stories during lectures, with guest speakers joining at times as well. The class is easy peasy if you pay attention and take notes, expect a good grade from this class.
Goei gives interesting lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but he does give in-class writings which are an easy way to get points. I had Goei during COVID; and he just wants to make your life easier. I learned a lot from him, not just school-wise but about communication in general. He makes it clear from the beginning that is his intention.
Goei is an amazing professor- had him for COMM 1000 too. This class is solely writing papers (no tests) which are relatively easy, but you will need the book. He is a very engaging professor and this class is more of a discussion between him and class than it is a lecture. Super interesting material and great professor make for a fun class!
TA's are going to do most of your grading. Become friends with them so that you'll get a good grade. Most of the work comes from your 3 papers and especially the reflective writing that you do each week. Also make sure you do 11 reflective writings so that you get extra credit. The tests are like quizzes but they challenging if you don't take notes
Goei is a really interesting person to listen to, but I found his class a little useless. He tells a lot of stories which are very fun and lectures are interactive, and most of the assignments are pretty easy as long as you do them. I found that you really only need to attend class on days where you do reflective writings - exams are super easy.
The tests are really tough, but his stories are very interesting. You have to go to the lectures to pass the class because all of his tests are scenario/story based. I really enjoyed goei, his tests are just tricky for it being a 1000 level course.
Professor Goei is the most caring professor I have ever had. He wants all the his students to succeed and do their best. He has great lectures that keep you interested every class. Make sure you show up for class to do reflective writings ( which you can earn extra credit on) as well as taking notes to help you on the exams. Great guy!
Ryan is by far my favorite professor. He tells funny stories that go along with his lectures. You take notes everyday that he gives you and then every Thursday you have to write one paper on what you learned and how it relates to your life. You have 3 exams and they are fairly easy if you just go to class and listen! You can study light and pass!
Prof Goei is a W. No use of tech in lecture, he just speaks which was cool. Tests are not hard if you go to class everyday, pay attention, and study with others beforehand. He gives you everything you need in the class to be successful. Talks about topics that are relevant and beneficial to have convos about. I learned A LOT of useful information.
Goei doesn't allow tech in his class which is hard to get used to but after you get used to it its not that bad. Lectures are fairly interesting and there are a lot of personal stories integrated.
This was a very educational class. Many people in this class felt comfortable participating and it was a safe space to talk about somewhat uncomfortable topics. Goei is a really easy guy to talk to.
Goei is a really nice guy but all he does it talk the entire class period and it can get pretty boring. The only things that are graded are hand written short 15-minute prompts about once per week, and the tests are a 30 minute hand written essay and a 10 question quiz that for some reason counts for 30 points. Its a meh class tbh
He uses his own personal stories to explain concepts which makes them much easier to understand. This is a course where you need to be in class everyday. He creates a comfortable and fun learning environment which makes it much easier to learn and he makes everyone feel included.
goei is amazing. if you want to pass you need to go to class, as the tests focus a lot on what is said in class. hes funny and integrates his own stories into his lectures which i love. he is very kind and his class is very easy if you just go and pay attention. theres 1 in class writing assignment every week but thats about it for assignments
Professor Goei is an overall good guy who makes his lessons relatable to real life situations which makes the class more enjoyable. It can sometimes get a bit boring though as he's talking for the entire time. You will need to go almost everyday because if you don't get the notes, you will likely not do well on the exams.
This is the best professor I have ever had, even teacher. He has changed me in so many ways, and I will continue to take classes with Goei. You should take Intercultural Communication if you can make it work in your schedule 2 nights a week for 6 weeks. It is a life changing experience and you will make friends that last forever
This class can be frustrating since he doesn't post anything about his lectures, so its very important to show up to class. All of the assignments are in class. There is no work to do outside of class which is very nice because not many classes are like that. Goei is very kind, & relatable. He makes his lectures engaging & interesting. I recommend.
No technology in this class. We did everything on paper. The hardest part of this class was that on exam days, we had to write an essay based on a prompt we had been given a few days prior. He's fantastic, and his lectures were very interesting. He would often relate it to his life, making the class very personal.
Funny prof, guidelines were sometimes poorly described. Assigns a long podcast for in-class essays, but sometimes it ends up not relevant to the essay. The tests are multiple choice, but they'll be 10 questions and 30 points, which can affect your grade fast.
Ryan is a great professor and is happy to help you succeed. There is very little out of class work, but you should be ready to write in class. Be prepared to take paper notes. Ryan's lectures are very engaging. You will not do well in class if you do not show up, but if you show up and pay attention you will do well.
Really good at telling many stories to make sure everyone can connect to the material. I learned a lot of valuable things and lessons in the class, and it broadened my perspective. The writings each week are really easy as long as you connect the content to something in your life. Focus on studying for multiple-choice because it has a big impact.
COMM1000 should be taken by everyone, especially with Goei. He avoids using tech in his classroom, so all assignments are readings outside class, and hand-written journal entries in class after lectures. Exams are also 40-45 min handwritten essays and a quiz. Seems daunting, but it's really not so bad if you go to class. So important to learn.
He cares about students a lot. His lecture is easy to follow, and he really likes students. 100% recommend him.
