His lectures are straight-forward, though he's a tad egotistical in regards to Sociology. Lots of bitter knocks on other departments.
One of the best Soc classes I have taken and one of the best instructors. Very open to different opinions and encourages lots of class discussion. I learned so much from this class!!
Easily the most arrogant professor on the planet, but his class is incredibly easy.

He is arrogant, and his tests are extremely hard, AND the class I'm in is extremely boring, but he is good at explaining and helping so it balances out.
I love his class! I think he makes every very clear, encourages discussion!
Semi-interesting class, great speaker, and hot enough to want to have a student/teacher relationship with!
a bit stuckup, class is very boring an a little hard, unlike what other peole say abo this class being fun and easy it's not. also if othes tell you that you do projects and stufff you don't; well at least not in his class
tests are pretty damn hard.... its hard to take notes because he goes through them so fast... i rather have him post the notes online so i can actually listen to him...over all its hard
one of my favorite teachers by far. he is passionate about sociology (for whatever reason) and it shows. his lectures are very interesting. he will randomly take attendance from time to time, but you need to go to lecture to pass the class anyway. as long as you take good notes and listen in class, the tests arent terribly difficult.
He is probably nicer outside the classroom. During class he came across as arrogant to me. A seriously egocentered style of teaching. Boring lectures with PP slides The Multiple choices are out to get you. The grade I got does not at all represent my knowledge in the field..I just happend not to be a native English speaker. Not fair nor flexible!
Going to class is very very important!! He will take attendance at random times. Although class is entirely composed of powerpoint slides and can be long and monotonous, you will do well on tests if you just take notes and listen. Overall, I found this class to be interesting!
Good Sociology teacher. Keeps his lectures going at a good pace, and he definitely knows his material. He seems like he is going to be a rough teacher at first, but he just wants to help you understand the material. Would recommend him to anyone taking Soc 101.
great teacher! really funny!
Collective Behavior was uninteresting and too much reading
i really never had a problem going to this class because the lecture was so well structured. I also enjoyed his cynical sense of humor. I just skimmed over the textbook, and used it for studying, but mainly everything on the test comes from the lectures and the articles he assigns. great intro class!
Though he can come off as being arrogant, Goodman is an overall good instuctor. Despite the class material not being particularly interesting, he tried hard to make it so- and as a Soc. major, I learned a lot. Tests are based mostly on material learned in lecture, so good attendance is vital to your success!! Very little textbook work.
He's pretty hot, but that's about all that he's got going for him. He's extremely arrogant, his lectures are boring, and his tests are unnecessarily difficult. I did not learn anything in this class.
I LOVED his class. He made me change my major to Sociology! He had an awesome sense of humor and I felt his tests were easy if you STUDIED! Definitely take his class it's very interesting!
Just go to class. He is great at going over the readings. If you take notes and study the test will be so easy and the paper he assigns is long but you can send it in for comments before he grades it. Best Soc class I've taken. Goodman gets back to you really fast through email if you need help or are confused.
Amazing teacher. Works great with you when you need something. Knowledgeable and passionate about sociology. Reading is explained well. He treats you like a person who has the cabability to think. I will take all his classes. Plus, he looks fantastic.
So hot. Good sense of humor. At the beginning of the semester it seems like it's going to be a super hard class, but it's not too bad. The tests are easy if you study and he grades fairly. He's really helpful and understanding. Going to class is a must, but it's not so bad because he's so great to look at.
interesting, a bit self-involved but that's mostly entertaining. He can be difficult and demands a certain standard of understanding from the entire class, which can be frustrating when things are genuinely confusing or unclear.
If you hate the subject of Sociology, don't take it with him. He is unclear, can't answer your questions and is very cynical. Great, hot man; bad teacher. Made me hate the subject more than I already did. If you want eyecandy, go for it. I wish I didn't pick him just for that.
very cynical and nice to look at! easy class over all
Great class. I had never taken any sociology class beforehand, and now I'm majoring in the subject. He's a good teacher, and he's very funny. I really likes his sense of humor, and it's quite obvious how much he cares about the subject.
This guy really cares about his students, his classes will challenge you and force you to learn his material. His lectures are very engaging and it is fun to be in his classroom. Definitely take this class!
Right to the point.
Super great teacher, hilarious and cynical, very outspoken about his beliefs but in a funny way. Not bad to look at and very knowledgeable on the subject. Great class, even if you don't like sociology!
Poor Lectures! Treats all students as if they are children. Others think he is cool because he is young and makes sarcastic comments, I think he is very idiotic and turned a very interesting subject into a dreaded class. I hate hearing this man's voice!
The instructor really is very good. He has an open-door policy and cares about his studens. The material is challenging as are the tests. Thelectures are very engaging. Very good instructor.
Great class, not a lot of reading and the reading that is needed is interesting so its not hard to keep up with. Go to lectures, study, and you should be fine. He only has 4 tests, and nothing else so take them seriously and go to the reviews. I really liked this class, goodman is funny little vegetarian. :)
Teacher knows what he is talking about. However, he doesn't like to help students at all and can be overly sarcastic when you ask him questions. Attendance is mandatory. Tests are very hard especially if you don't get the material. Only 4 tests so if you fail one test you are pretty much screwed.
This class would be extremely easy if it wasn't for the bogus tests. The class itself is unbearable with the lame pp lectures. The instructor tries to hard to be funny...(fail) at times I feel as if he is auditioning for a comedy club. In retrospect if I would have known this class would have been so boring I would have dropped it.
I am a senior graduating in education and took this class for fun. By far the worse class I have ever taken. Tests were completely invalid. He is very biased and rude. He makes you go to all classes not matter what and will not take excuses. Do not take this class, take it from an education major, it is a horrible class.
All of these negative comments are bogus. By far the best teacher I have had at UNM. Great class if you are willing to work. If you expect college to be done for you, perhaps you should not be in it in the first place!
Mr. Goodman has a very dry sense of humor. Though he is very cynical, he is an "equal opportunity cynic" and doesn't just focus on one side or the other. His tests are kind of hard but he's definitely intriguing and knowledgeable. He made me enjoy sociology. If you don't enjoy dry humor though, maybe you'd be better off with someone else.
Mandatory attendance. Only 4 exams so do well on all. Tons of note taking. Goodman was funny at times, but mainly he was biased and rude- something he expected all his students not to be. Exams were not difficult as long as you don't have trouble applying; however the multiple choice could be pretty tricky.
I really enjoyed his class it was very interesting, he was very clear on the subject matter and pretty hilarious at times. As long as you show up, pay attention, and take notes you should do fine. The test can be tricky but if you are actually comprehending the material they aren't bad. He is very knowledgeable.
He is by far the best Professor I have had in three years at UNM. He gets his students to think, which is a foreign concept to some. There is a lot of note taking, but the tests are all from the notes which means no nasty surprises!
I have just started SOC 101 with Ryan and wanted to read what other students have said. I was spot on with the comedy routine, arrogance, hot temper etc. After a few classes I have figured this guy has OCD, ADT and mania. The slides go too quickly and he does not post them on the class site. Any ideas how to get the notes?
I enjoyed his class very much. He is very funny and has an extremely strong opinion about a lot of things, if you are easily offended don't take his class. His lectures do go very fast and there are TONS of notes, but his test are taken from the notes exactly! I have recommended him to some of my friends and they enjoy him as well!
He looks like Spock! No joke! Liked his class and his sarcastic sense of humor. Quite a bit of notes though.
He's a loony, arrogant and up himself
This class is nothing but notes from powerpoint slides. Very dry humor. Bases grades strictly off of tests. 3 tests and a final.
Really sarcastic, lots of notes, but enjoyed his class
He was a funny teacher but to much notes and powerpoints. Nothing fun about this class
To much note takeing. Was a funny teacher. Grades based only on three test and final and nothing else. Nothing but note takeing in his class and never help you on a questions,
A class with nothing but not takeing. His gradeing is wack he only grades test a total of three test and a final. No help from the tecaher as well.
Too much note taking. but class was really fun. He is very sarcastic but fun, though. There are a lot of stuff have to memorize but it's basically easy one.
If you don't mind getting carpel tunnel from all the notes you have to take, then take this class. The teacher is interesting and pretty funny. He knows his subject well and is passionate about it. The tests aren't too hard and there's review sessions for each. Consider this class an easy A if you're willing to do a bit of studying.
There was a lot of note taking, but everything that was in the notes was on the tests. He also let you use the three previous tests for the final. It didn't hurt that he's super good looking too :)
One of my favorite professors.
Great professor!Funny, intelligent, and easy on the eyes. There are a total of 4 tests including the final.grade brakdown:iclicker/attendance 10%,exams 60%,final exam:30%. Some reading is assigned but it is very short. The bulk of the test questions are from the notes.Good note taking is a must for this class. This is my favorite class this semester.
Okay class... Test are pretty hard! There is a lot of NOTE taking though!!!
Goodman super opinionated and definitely does not try to hide it. He is very passionate about what he teaches and has a good sense of humor. He talks a lot about being tolerant but if you have different views from him, he won't hesitate in calling you stupid. Test questions are straight from the notes.
I do agree with everyone else; there are a lot of notes to take, but there's just so much information crammed into the semester that that's just how it is. He expects people not to do the assigned reading, so it's not that important. There are test ?s on it, though, but stay during the review sessions and he'll give you an answer on the test.
He is a very excite-able teacher. He does a great job introducing sociology, especially for non-majors. It's not an overly difficult class. Ryan likes to stress the importance of student's open-mindedness and acceptance, but presents a pretty blatant bias in lecture.
great teacher!! MUST go to class inorder to succeed. Fun, excitable personality.
He is a Good proffesor, but does not help much to prepare for the exams. He does not give study guide or anything like that. You also have to take a lot of notes.
Good instructor, but the exams are HARD!!!! You also have to take a lot of notes!!! Final Exam has 75 question and 60 question is similar to the quarterly exams. Class is based on 3 quarterly exams and 1 final exam.
He was really helpful as a teacher. He was cynical, witty, and very smart. He plays great music before class starts sometimes, and he really cares about what he's doing. To get an A take NOTES. For me it wasn't difficult to pay attention and take notes because he is such an astounding teacher. Also, really helpful in office hours!
He does play music before class which is awesome. Its soo hard to take notes because he draws you in so well. Youll attend a lecture and be so involved at the end youll realize youve written nothing down. he holds review classes before every test show up to those and youll ace them, funny witty awesome class if you have the chance TAKE IT!
i enjoyed his class and all the discussions. the topics were quite interesting. his exams were somewhat hard and i hated the trick questions he put on there. he knew what he was teaching and made sure that people attended his class because missing a day you were screwed.
Exams were ridiculously hard, and he poorly prepared his students for them. Lectures were very interesting and well done, but there's an average of 5-6 pages of notes per class.
He NEEDS to upload his Power Point slides. All "REAL" professors that I have had do it-it is better to reward the good students than punish them for the students that don't attend. If notes were permitted, we could listen to his lectures better. No review papers for Exams. Great lecturer. DIFFICULT EXAMS! Take another class until his philo changes
Every questions on the test had all of the above. Everything seemed a little right and he crams so many notes that it is difficult to figure out what to study. At first his class seemed so promising and now it's dreaded! I can never listen to what he is saying because I am too busy writing what he is putting on his powerpoints.
MAJOR note taking. Do not miss a class, rereading notes is the key to acing the exams. You really need to know the info well but all you have to do is study the notes which are interesting since he makes them that way. Yes he is hot, but married so keep your panties on ladies.
EXTREME notetaking. Too busy writing notes to hear the lecture. His 'required' book is useless, whereas the optional book helped me learn more about sociology than Goodman or his book did, combined. Not hot as some girls claim, I'm married, maybe that's why. He is way too egotistical, arrogant, and FRUITY. I love to learn, but he destroys SOC.
Ryan is a witty and fun teacher. there are a lot of notes but they are very helpful if you don't want to read the books. He is extremely engaging and his class is not boring because of it. Also, you can easily get a B on the exam with a minimal amount of studying. If you did go over your notes before the exam it is an easy A.
He makes you take a lot of notes and sometimes goes to fast through the slides so you don't get all the info. He is hot from far away. All of the questions read "d. a and b are correct, e. all of the above are correct" The book that is required is only required for him to make some extra money even though he didn't write anything in it. DO NOT TAKE
Ryan Goodman is an excellent professor. I found almost everything he had to say was important and worth taking notes on. He talks very fast so unless your a speed typer its impossible to get everything so getting the textbook is worth while.
Insanely easy. Show up to class, write down everything on the powerpoints, study them, and you're golden. Tests are mostly multiple choice and the final is cumulative but based on the questions from all of the previous tests. Very interesting material and Goodman is easy on the eyes and uses a lot of dry humor. :)
He doesn't require a text book! There isn't much course work! Just three exams and a final! Just take notes and show up and you will do well! Also he will try to confuse you on exams which are all multiple choice. Ex. He will give you a b c bc or ac or all of the above but it's not too bad if you know the material. All in all it's not a bad class!
Ryan is an amazing instructor. He is very knowledgeable and cares about his students. There are lots of notes; about 6 pages handwritten or 3 pages typed. I suggest you type because he talks fast. There are 3 exams 30 multiple Q's. The final is just Q's off the exams. Don't miss the notes, go to class, & STUDY! You will be fine.
Ryan Goodman is an AMAZING! teacher and very handsome:). I found his class to be hard in the begining but made my self study every night. So study every night and do no miss class! its worth it!!
His class will be the class that you want to go to! Young, handsome, geeky, and has a great sense of humor that keeps everyone interested. You do need to come, take notes (I recommend a laptop- he moves fast and there's a lot of content), and study for tests. Occasional short readings, but unnecessary since he talks about them in class anyway.
1. He's super hot. 2. Attend every class to pass. 3. He intentionally makes it hard, but fun as well.
He reads exactly what's on the slides, and he reads fast. So type! There is A LOT of notes. He won't post slides online, even when asked. He is intelligent, and nice to talk to.Tests are multiple choice, but NEED to study.Hard.Easy class overall:go to class, study, and you're fine. The band he is in,Leiahdorus,is worth listening too as well!Cool professor!
HARD instructor! No mercy. Even when you ask for help, write what he recommends you still get a C or worse on papers. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. Try another instructor. Busy work is assigned. Not worth all the stress. Nice person, not so nice instructor.
This professor was very difficult to understand. He acted as though we should already know the terms he is teaching about. Tons of note writing!! Speaks fast! Hard tests! Multiple choice but you must study ALOT!!! Would not recommend taking this course with him.
Ryan is a very funny and witty professor. If you go to class and take good notes you will be fine. He goes very deep into Sociology and makes it stick to your brain. You will have to put in work to pass the class. Go to the test reviews ! They are helpful.
Super hilarious if you don't mind the sarcasm. He totally tells it like it is, don't like it? Tells you to leave. The test are difficult but if you take good notes they are simple. He is a hotty!
Goodman is a good teacher, but he does expect each student to take their learning into their own hands. He assigns reading for every class, to which you must turn in a summary every class period. His exams cover exactly what you read and discuss in class.
He is a pretty good teacher. He moves fast and doesn't post the slides anywhere, so it is a good idea to read your notes after class. If you know someone who had taken him before, I would suggest getting their tests as he recycles a majority of the questions. He is a cool dude, but really isn't that hot.
He is a good teacher, and explains things in a clear way. His class does require work, and you have to turn in a typed paper at every class. He also doesnt provide rubrics, so I found that to be difficult. Overall, the class was good and I liked him.
Class is very interesting. Must read assigned chapters before class and write a one page essay before every class. Found the midterm and Final easy. Attend all classes, do the work and you should not have a problem. Good teacher overall.
Best prof I've had, in this dept or anywhere. 471 requires work- lots of reading and response papers, mostly- but it's a 400-level so that's expected and not overly difficult. He just expects you to THINK about it. He made the oft difficult readings not only understandable but exciting with background and class discussion. Couldn't recommend more.
Great teacher! wish I could take all classes with him. Very smart, knows his stuff. Makes class fun and interesting. Very sarcastic humor. Great at emailing back!
Ryan is awesome! His classes are tough, but he makes you think. I was really nervous to take 280 and 471 but I am glad I took it with him because he made all the concepts (specially in 471) make since! I would highly recommend taking him.
The entire grade of this class is based on four quizzes and three exams plus the final. The tests are really difficult and confusing because there can always be multiple answers. All we do in class is take notes and he expects us to memorize the notes word for word. Worse class I've ever taken.
Very good teacher though he expects you to apply yourself just like any teacher in a 400 level class. His class help me become a better all around student
The teacher made us buy his book which we never used. I never Knew how I was doing in his class. I didn't get any feedback.
The subject is boring and Ryan knows that. He does his best to teach it. The assignments look a lot tougher then they actually are. I did a couple the day before and got Bs. His notes are pretty much useless because everything is shorthand but everything you need to know can be googled.
The class overall is pretty boring. Goodman wasn't a bad teacher but he could be rude and condescending to students in class. The homeworks aren't terrible hard. I wouldn't recommend buying the book. I never used it, and googled most if not all of the info to help with HW.
Don't take his class if you're looking for an easy A where you do not have to apply yourself. I think Dr. Goodman was one of, if not the best, professor i've had at UNM as far as making his students think and actually understand the information. If you ask him a question you won't get the answer, you'll get where/how to find it, or understand it.
He was helpful and approachable. You have to tack a lot notes, but you learn a lot. GO TO CLASS you well be better off… most the stuff on the test he goes over in class. You can pass if study, don’t put off the online part of the class. His lecture are good and entertaining I liked going to class.
First things first, Goodman is a pretty hard teacher, but if you show up to class and take notes EVERYDAY then you should understand the concepts well during the midterm and final. He expects you to do all the reading and homework and he gets pissed when nobody knows what the hell he is talking about, but overall he was fun and engaging in class.
His lectures were interesting but his exams were extremely hard. They were all just trick questions. Never giving you a clear choice. The course was okay but i would not take it again.
I would highly recommend finding a different sociology teacher. Death by power point, carpal tunnel syndrome from note taking, and bored to tears. He rarely interacts with his students, and when he does it usually isn't pretty. Avoid at all costs, or proceed with caution.
Dr Goodman is very helpful and always available for help on assignments via email/office hours. He is strict and does not take bull from anyone, but that is what we should expect from a college professor. His dry humor helps break up the boring material discussed in lecture. Dr Goodman is by far the best professor so far in the UNM Sociology Dept.
This class was by far one of the easier classes I've taken. Ryan does take attendance via pop quiz if there is a low turn out on that particular day. Lot's of busy work in this class, but if you show up and do the course work and A is easily attainable. Ryan is very intelligent and is extremely helpful. Don't hesitate to e-mail him!
Doesnt seem interested in students at all. He could care less if you pass or fail the class. I would attend class regularly, take thorough notes, and study often only to be barely getting credit for the class.
I would highly recommend this class if you're looking for something easy. Attendance is really not mandatory expect for on quiz days and they are done in groups and near impossible to not receive a 100 on. Homework is very rare and super easy. Tests are hard but failing won't keep you from passing as long as you do well on all other assignments.
He's a great teacher. He assigns a lot of assignments. They're very long too. But he's crystal clear in what he wants from you and his exams are easy.
I felt that Dr. Goodman was a very knowledgeable professor. His assignments are easily graded because they are mainly for participation. His tests are graded differently so be sure to learn the material. I did not pass this course per department standards but took this same course again with another professor and got an A.
Goodman, in short is a very intelligent and energized lecturer, and does a good job of making sure you do not nod off. His grading is rather moderate, neither harsh nor too forgiving. The problem with his style is that he makes asking questions and participation (Things he asks for often) hard due to an intimidating personality.
Ryan is a great teacher. I learned a lot in his class. He is very willing to help if you send him an email and responds quickly. He is the reason I chose to be a Sociology major. He respects students who are really trying and will call out students who aren't.
Ryan is an excellent professor. Research methods is a difficult course, so expect assignments to be time consuming and graded harshly. There are group assignments, but he grades at an individual level. Exams are graded more generously as long as you've attended all sessions. Pay closer attention to lecture notes rather than the textbook material.
Ryan is intelligent, and you can really tell he's passionate. His class is very intimidating at first, but if you come to class and are willing to complete the reading response due every week, it's fine. He makes a dry class very engaging, and VERY easy to understand. There were 3 papers to write, and a mid term. His class was wonderful.
best professor i have ever had at UNM, very engaged and very relevant
Ryan is an awesome professor, he keeps students engaged in lectures and makes it interesting at the same time. This class is not easy, however if you put in the effort you should have no problem passing. He is ready and eager to help you with any questions you may have and gives super helpful feedback. 10/10 would recommend
Oh, Ryan Goodman. People say he's arrogant and sarcastic. I believe he's like that to break the ice with his students. He's an awkward kind of guy; that's not a terrible thing, he just does things a bit differently. He's helpful, knowledgeable, and enjoys class discussion and participation. P.S. It's not a lot of work/reading if it's engaging.
I chose Ryan as my professor for my Into to Research Methods class, otherwise known as Sociology 380. It's already known to be a hard course, so I was a bit nervous. However, Ryan was a good professor overall. He always clarifies lecture material even though it can be very tedious and long. SHOW UP TO CLASS. Group work is a big part of the class.
Goodman was one of the best teachers that I have encountered here. I took SOC 380 and 331 from him, and am signed up to take more classes. He's sarcastic, but passionate. Switched into these classes at the last minute, and I'm so grateful that I did.
I had two reasons for never missing a class; Ryan is hilarious and he's hot. His lectures actually impact you because you'll remember a joke of a remark and its humor will burn it to your memory. The class is easy but requires work and attendance. If you go and establish a relationship with Ryan you'll have a great time in his class lectures.
This class was the most difficult class Ive taken from Ryan. I really enjoy his teaching style and his sarcasm. I dont know of a professor that cares as much as he does and I would take a class from him again if I could!
Ryan was a great teacher to have for social movements! He's a very intelligent professor, and you can tell by the way he lectures. A lot of people dropped my class, because they were scared off, but as long do the readings and responses each week, and complete the two term papers you will be fine. Just go to class and pay attention.
Dr. Goodman is a great professor. His class basically prepares you to create a research proposal. You have about 5 short paper assignments, which help you to build up your final research proposal. As long as you do the short assignments, you'll be set. His lectures are also great. And I cant leave out the fact that he's super attractive:)
Great professor very understanding caring and reasonable , he has daily reading assignments that are not hard at all and instead of exams has very long papers but very easy once you get going
He is a really good professor but is EXTREMELY heavy on notes, so get ready to write. Only a few reading questions and quizzes a few times month but they're super easy. As long as you take the notes, listen to lecture, and study for exams, you should get an A in the class. Is intimidating during lecture, but very approachable after class.
I loved him. He's really interesting and good at explaining the concepts in the class. Always wants to help. 10/10 do recommend.
Ryan is very passionate and funny. He is real sarcastic sometimes, but he means well. He wants students to pass, but they need to earn their grade. The amount of reading is ridiculous and the reading reviews, but he is a great professor. There are three papers, midterm, and final. His grading is sometimes harsh, but if you work for it he will know.
Probably one of the best teachers I've had in college...
Ryan is a great professor. There is a lot of reading and reflections on each reading but you get used to it and it gets easier. I'm registered for another class of his next semester and look forward to it. Also he reminds me of the riddler from Batman, no joke!
This professor is a total communist and if you're not ready to join his Red Guard prepare for a F- and possibly be sent to the schools gulags.
He's great if you want to be lectured about how much he loves the Communist Manifesto and how he thinks the USA is an evil capitalist Imperial regime. If you don't bring Mao's little red book to class don't expect to pass.
This has to be one of the worst classes! This teacher treats his class if its the only class his students are taking. Get ready to read!
I've had several classes with Ryan Goodman and they were all horrible. Not only does he take his title as Dr. Goodman way too seriously but he takes his job way too seriously. The courses are something I would expect from a graduate level course, (I am a very studious person) but they were just ridiculous. 10/10 do not recommend taking his classes.
At the start of the semester, Ryan will specifically say his classes are not meant to be hazing classes. I personally feel like its done intentionally to provoke students because without a doubt his classes are hazing classes. Ive taken an honors course at CNM where Ive read a novel each week and it was less intensive than this.
Took this class on sociology of gender, what a mistake. Me along with the rest of the class get nothing but negative feedback. I had to write a 10 page paper and transcribe 5 conversations. Total of 35 pages. He treats this class like a graduate level class. Save yourself the trouble and stay far away from this class.
Ryan has amazing lectures, theyre interesting, funny, and he seriously knows what hes talking about which is cool. It also helps that he is pretty hot. His tests are hard but if you pay attention in class you will be fine! Hes very helpful if you need help as well.
This professor singlehandedly decided my major. Awesome lecturer who develops rapport with students. His 'reading reflections' seem to be more of a 'did you read it?' check than anything else, so don't stress out over them too much. Always willing to assist students in understanding the material.
Ryan is very respectful and professional while also maintaining a stimulating and exciting classroom environment. He's wonderful about allowing for accommodations if you have special needs. There was a ton of work required for the level this class is. There were two heavily research-based ten-page papers and tons of writing and reading in between.
His class was basic, his view on the world is one sided, he thinks hes the great and really does take his title too seriously if you disagree with him be prepared to not pass or get discriminated against. Says hes a nice guy, from my point of view on how he treats intelligent people of color who have differences is to act like hes superior.
Ryan listens to what you say. He considers input in discussions. I enjoyed learning from his teachings and I feel it was informatinve class overall. I would take more classes from this teacher, I was able to learn new history of the US and I appreciate the variety of classroom work.
He has a big ego to stroke. It's ironic since his class focuses on an approach of looking at society then yourself instead of vice versa. It also makes his lectures hard to stomach at times. That said, his teaching style is intelligent and structured. Yet, it falls short considering the class size and his pretentious quips. Wouldn't recommend.
Class seems basic, but taught in a way that it doesn't make sense. The grading criteria is not clear whatsoever and instructor is very contradicting on his requirements. I recommend not taking the class. You'll get all points on the first HW assignments before the %100 percent refund date then after you'll lose points.
Dr. Goodman assigned a lot of work and did not have a clear grading criteria. I had difficulty comprehending social movements. The class did not make sense.
Ryan Goodman is one of the few professors who listen to you and try to work your theories into the lecture. His lectures are never boring, however, if you do not do the readings you will have no clue what is going on. He is also a tough grader but he can tell when you put in time and effort he grades fairly.
This professor gives out quizzes every other week or so that are always 4 questions long and worth 40 points. Even after doing the reading for the quizzes they are still nearly impossible to answer. You also really never learn anything in class except for his point of view on the world.
He gives amazing lectures and assigns great readings. Also, buy the book -- There are quizzes on them and your quizzes really matter. His bad reviews are b/c people don't understand his humor, or get too defensive about things like privilege and capitalism. As a feminist WOC, he's great and not offensive or arrogant. Take his class!
I took Soc Theory, and do not be deceived--there is plenty of homework, reading, and lectures (it is a theory class, after all), but Dr. Goodman does a wonderful job of teaching theory in a way that is relevant, exciting, and applicable. He's very passionate about what he does and that shows in his course structure. Highly recommend!
Dr. Goodman is a critical and honest grader. He does not sugar coat things so if you're used to an easy A and easy pass then take someone else. If you want to challenge yourself and improve in the way you do work and the quality of your writing then take his class.
Every Sociology major should take SOC380 with Ryan. It's a lot of hard, detailed work, but it is so worth it. One of the most practical classes I've taken at UNM. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you'll be lost doing your assignments if you don't go to lecture. He's a hard ass, but a brilliant one.
Ryan Goodman's lectures some times can be long, and at times you may leave class confused. If you stay and talk to him or shoot him an email he is more than happy to clarify the material for you. The concept over all is very challenging, but if you show that you are actually trying to learn the material then you'll pass the class. Fair grader!
Goodman is a hard professor and can be quite confusing at times. I had a really hard time in this class... but it was an interesting one.
I spent hours doing my best on the assignments but that was never enough. He is super sarcastic and may be rude when you don't know something. His assignments are not clear so you never know what exactly he's asking for. Answering the question correctly is not enough, he always wants more and finds the tiniest things to give you a bad grade.
Ryan is a tough grader. What I hate is that were only a 300 level course but he treats his class like its a graduate level. Ive taken 400 level classes that are easier and less intensive than his class. He definitely takes his title too seriously. Hes also very unclear about his expectations on assignments. We didnt even have a rubric.
The key to doing well in his classes is taking efficient notes and paying attention to the parts he puts emphasis on. His tests are difficult but if you show up to most of the lectures and do the readings, they become easier. Goodman is an okay guy, is bit too cocky, and takes his job way too seriously. But he's a great drummer so he's alright.
He is a very tough teacher and a hard grader. He assigns so many essays that are very labor-intensive; his grading requirements aren't clear and he takes many points off because you did not understand his criteria. This class is only a 300 level class and yet it requires as much effort as a grad school class.
Ryan is an honest professor who grades fairly. 7-12 readings/week, but that's just sociology. Close to "what grad school reading load is"-Ryan. A few essays that seem intimidating, but are fairly simple. Daily "lectures" with interactive discussions. This is upper division, so don't think you'll get by easily; You have to work for a good grade.
I took Ryan this semester for 331 and 371. Both classes comprise of a few papers and reflections each class on readings. It is a lot of work but and easy A if you do it.
Goodman is an excellent professor. He has some engaging and funny lectures, but there is a ton of reading an writing.
Ryan is hard to approach, once you talk to him its not bad, but its scary to ask him a question in the first pace. He is intimidating and sarcastic. But I appreciate that he doesn't believe in exams. We have one big paper, and an assignment every week, some big some little. Go to his TA's sessions and you pass, wish I did that the fist time around.
Ryan's classes always consist of daily reading and a reflection to go with it. Lecture covers the readings in depth and is class-led, making it more original. There aren't exams in 398, but there are a couple papers that require good research, but are straightforward and easy. Approach him with questions and he will be happy to help!
He doesn't believe in tests so your grade is based on 4 quizzes, 4 "papers", and in-class participation. Not a tough grader if you just do the work. Lectures were a bit dry, but he tried to make it interesting. LOTS of class discussions and participation, which made it easier to stay focused. Would take again if needed too.
Hes a great lecturer and he grades fairly but he does not like being challenged by students in class. He also has low tolerance for side discussions.
Expect to read 50-75 pages per week on very difficult material. You will have two reading essays per week, using theory assignments(3-5 pages), classwork outside of class(zoom), and I believe our midterm and finals were 20+ pages combined. If you enjoy having any free time I recommend you avoid Ryan.
Ryan can come off in an intimidating way, but he has a lot of passion for his topics. It's upper division, so you do have to work for it. Lots of readings, up to 70 pages/class. Ask him questions, he will help you! If you try and show an honest effort, your grade will be good. It takes hard work in 300 levels, so don't think you can slack.
Lots of reading and weekly homework. Just talks for most part of the lecture, so slides or anything. Book was required and helpful. He knows his stuff and is funny and has cute dogs! There are a few essays, no tests or quizzes.
Ryan is an ok professor. He is dedicated to social movement culture so he grades ridiculously hard and gives little feedback on corrected assignments. There are three readings and a page reflection due before your meeting time. Each reading has min 14 pgs and max 45. There are no lecture notes he just talks the whole class and can get distracted.
I only took this intro course, but I could tell he was very passionate about this. He talks A LOT so the textbook is resourceful to use outside of class. Make sure to participate and ask questions. He is really nice and seems easy-going but he grades seriously so don't turn in random words and expect a good grade.
Ryan is passionate about what he teaches, and makes it clear and easy to understand the lectures. The daily assignments and discussion could be difficult if you don't have prior knowledge of Sociological Theory.
If you need Intro to Sociology as a prerequisite, then Ryan Goodman is the professor to take. He is very passionate about what he is teaching, tells how it is, and is very good at riding the fine line between differing opinions on course topics. There is a lot of writing and note taking but if you put in the work, then this class is a breeze.
This class is hard the concepts are confusing and hard to grasp. I still really like Prof. Goodman even though I struggled hes a great teacher and I will take his other classes. He is personable and cares about his student. Also hes pretty funny.
- Only a midterm and final worth 40% of grade. Assignments/quizzes 20% -Goodman does not believe in study guides/reviews. "Come to class do the readings you will be fine" -Readings are hard to keep up with. 10-20+ pages. -Makes reading and assignments due right before class. -His TA is a very harsh grader for work so be careful.
Awsome professor! He cares about students and is motivational. The course was simultaneously fun and challenging. I'm glad I took the class.
The class is reading heavy (expect up to 50-70 pages/class), it is sociology after all. Daily reading reflections, simple notes in class (not overly wordy), and two papers. You do have to show an effort in Ryan's courses, but if you put in the effort, you will be fine, he wants to see that you are trying. Good feedback, and ask lots of questions
Gets distracted easily.
If you're not about reading 20+ pages a week RUN from this class. It's so easy to bring your grade down in his class & yet impossible to bring it up. Except to have to write 500+ words for your hw just to receive a 25/30. His TA grades all his work & is a harsh grader. Goodman never stays on track during lectures & doesn't do study guides.
Lots of reading but worth it- I genuinely feel like I learned so much from every lecture and set of readings. There's multiple papers but no exams and he's very receptive if you have questions or need clarification etc. I highly recommend this class. You can tell he's super interested in the subject which is the best kind of class to be in tbh.
After taking research methods I thought I just hated the subject of the course and I liked Ryan's personality so I had no hesitation in taking another one of his classes. I made a big mistake. He demands far too much of his students pandemic or not his standards are unachievable. I am sad to say I would not recommend.
HE is very passionate about what he teaches and that reflects in the lectures. Attendance is required and will make up 20% of your grade. Lots of reading and writing (expected for an upper division class). This was the best sociology class I have ever taken and was interesting and the professor has great energy when teaching.
I loved Prof. Goodmans personality, but when it came to grading there were notes, but every assignment the notes were copied and pasted. Almost all the grading was done by the TA. I thought I was doing good on assignments but then my grade would drop consistently.
Goodman is probably one of the best professors I've had and I have absolutely loved being in class. That being said, there is a lot of homework and it can be very hard to manage. Getting burnt-out and feeling extremely anxious were super common for me when it came to the assignments. I loved this course, but I'm unsure if I would take another.
Anyone already in reading heavy classes should avoid him. He can ask for up to 14 to 45 pages of reading per assigned day and can reach 80 pages a week. Worst of all, I don't feel like I learned anything from the lecture or reading. It got to a point I just read enough to write a half decent reflection so I could focus on my other work.
Dr. Goodman is extremely sarcastic and grades ridiculously low. He also leaves submission comments that seem unrelated to the assignment he's grading. Sociology 1110 isn't a hard course if you put in the work, but Dr. Goodman doesn't seem to be happy with any type of submission. I recommend you take this course with another professor.
Dr. Goodman has a terrible attitude toward his students and comes off as rude during his lectures. He also grades extremely unfairly. I have taken over 80 credit hours at UNM and have never once been graded a 36% on an essay I worked on for a week. Also, his grading comments don't make any sense whatsoever. I recommend you avoid his class
Ryan is probably the worst instructor I've ever had during my 3 years at UNM. He's sarcastic, has an attitude, and thinks he's better than you. Also, the average grade for all students on a single assignment is usually under 50%. In all honesty, I don't understand why this man is teaching at UNM, especially intro classes.
I enjoy Ryan's classes he makes them interesting even in a class like Research Methods which was difficult for me given my lack of understanding of statistics. Sociological Theory is a lot of reading because he has to cover a lot but I enjoy how he ties things from the past to the real world. Taken plenty of classes with him, & will take again.
I stay up most nights until 5am to complete the homework for this class. There is so much reading for every class day, and a reflection to go along with it that's always hard to write or get a good grade on because the readings are all 100 years old, hard to understand, and there's only basically a day to do it. Don't take this class.
GO TO CLASS!! Professor Goodman explains all of the concepts very well and gives us loads of info to work off of for our papers. As long as you attend lectures and expand on concepts we've discussed in class, you will do fine. He wants everyone to feel comfortable enough to speak up in class and encourages us to do so.
This class was a lot of reading, but I learned a wide range of Sociological theories. Definitely recommend reading ahead to understand the lectures and dedicating a couple hours to read for every assignment. He is a difficult grader and can tell when you do the homework last minute.
Get ready to read and write a bunch of papers! First of all he wants you to teach yourself the material and never teaches you . I have never felt so dumb in my life before him . I dread every moment and everyday I haveu to go in here . If you want to learn anything about this class you have to teach it to yourself
We are assigned 12 papers throughout the term and he lacks the ability to create a rubric that clearly states what he wants. His feedback is awful and anything he does not agree with he will dock you points off. He is vague in his comments and is little help when emailed. Stay away.
Goodman is the absolute worst professor I have ever had. His expectations for perfection are absurd; he is disorganized and unclear in his assignments. He posted six mandatory journal assignments (two pages, single space) with challenging prompts several weeks after he said he would, with quickly approaching deadline. Difficult not to fail.
Terrible professor, avoid at all costs. Does not do well teaching introductory concepts to sociology. I could not tell you a single thing I have learned, because I have not learned. 12 papers throughout semester, that you will struggle to write because you have been taught nothing. No structure to class, rambles and scribbles on board for "lecture"
The WORST professor ever! He is the most rudest professor I have ever encountered at UNM. He makes no sense during his "lectures" you are lost beginning to end. You learn NOTHING. His TA is no help at all. You have to write 12 essays through out the semester with no feedback. Tough grader. Sociology is boring as is and he makes it 10 times worse!
His grading scale is very imbalanced. He grades notecards (of a VERY specific 5x7 size) as 70% of the grades. Simple, right? WRONG!! They are collected at random and there aren't very many of them. He is also very strict in his grading of the other assignments. I am so glad I will not have to take this professor's class again.
his class is meant to be a place of open-mindedness and intellectual exploration, but suddenly becomes a source of anxiety and disillusion rude behavior significantly diminishes the enthusiasm to attend class, creating a hostile learning atmosphere that is entirely counterproductive& impacts a student's decision to never take his class again.
This professor is very rude and disrespectful to students. he is verbally sarcastic and cusses in class. I would not recommend this professor or take his class. His assistant is also rude and walks around talking to some people and ignore other students. the grading is slow and very picky on assignments.
I love him. People who give him bad ratings have fragile egos and are mad they can't cheat. Best class I've ever taken
Ryan can be very hard on his assignment but does come across as rude to others. However, encountering rude and sarcastic instructors can significantly impact students' mental health and have a negative impact on registering for his class again.
Ryan is a tough grader we're only a 300-level course, but he treats his class like it's a graduate level I've taken 400level classes that are easier and less intensive than his class He definitely takes his title too seriously. He's also very unclear about his expectations on assignments. He threatens to give us more homework if we want to complain
Ryan is a really fun lecturer and probably one of my favorite professors. He makes a lot of jokes and its a class to look forward to. There is a bit of reading and a lot of essays, but no tests. The lectures are very deep conceptually which can be fun to think about and I have learned a lot.
Taking this class is like Sheldon from Big Bang Theory teaching the class. He can come across as rude. Is very uncomfortable to speak with him at times. He straight out told us if we wanted to complain about the 12 journals he would give us heavier assignments like he did the other semester before. Lol, I wouldn't recommend him take someone else!!
tough but worth it
Before taking Goodman's class, I was intimidated due to all of these negative ratings. However, after taking this class, I can honestly say that the course is not even half as bad as these make it out to be. Yes, we wrote 12 journals, but the theories had so much information. If you go to class, then the note cards aren't even bad.
This professor makes lectures interesting with is sarcasm and I believe if you can't handle very harsh criticism it isn't good to take this class. He has many papers as 30% of the grade and few notecards as 70%, which I disagree with since most of the work for this class is poured into something that isn't worth much. This was very discouraging.
DO NOT MISS CLASS! On the days when there are no attendance notecards, attendance will be taken! It's 70 percent of your overall grade. I had missed a few classes due to medical reasons, and he would not accommodate me! The Theory is dense but not impossible, but If given the choice, I would take it with another professor! Good luck :(
It is obvious Dr. Goodman is a subject matter expert in this field. Where he lacks is his ability to connect with students. He comes off as arrogant and almost like he expects you to just understand the material. If you do as much of the intense readings as possible, make the note cards and go to class every session you will do fine though.
Dr Goodman lives and breathes sociology. Seriously, do not expect an easy class, it is so much work, but if you follow the guidelines for papers, use the theories, and show up to class regularly, he's an easy grader. Even if you don't like him as a person, I recommend going to his office hours because he is more lenient to the students who try hard
He understands concepts very well and explains them in depth. Everything is given during the lecture and he uses a whiteboard, no slides. Notes are easy to take. if you don't show up you won't know how to do the assignments. Is a tough grader but doesn't believe in tests or quizzes and is an easily passible class as long as you show up.
Dr. Goodman as a professor is amazing. He cares about his students actually understanding the theories and will explain them more if you go to office hours. He is very knowledgeable, and surprisingly a rather easy grader considering the material. As a regular person though, he is a little rude and cocky. So just get to know him as a professor.
Dr. Goodman is a brilliant sociologist, but his teaching style can be tough to navigate. The workload is intense, but using tools like unstuck study, along with regular attendance, can help you succeed in this challenging yet rewarding course.
He actually made me want to cry. Please save yourself. If you love writing 20+ pages of papers then go ahead. You have to go to class but he doesn't even take attendance each time, its random and 70% of your grade. Please take anyone else
There is A LOT of reading for this course but it's all fun reading and interesting lectures. There aren't formal notes with power points but it's a good idea to read the assigned readings and come prepared to talk deeply about the readings. The papers are long but not excessive. Great personality and great teacher.
My second time taking Dr. Goodmans lecture and I would take him again in the future if he's offered. Lecture heavy and a lot of reading but there are little assignments and he genuinely cares about what he teaches. Is very open minded to all ideas and opinions. He was my first sociology professor for into, definitely take his class he's great
Dr. Goodman knows the material very well, but expects his students to understand it at the same level. He is a very tough grader and will take off points for any possible reason. His comments and announcements are very passive aggressive and pretty rude. He never answered any of my emails. Hes a funny and smart guy but should not be a professor.
He is a great lecturer but you must be engaged with the lectures or you will not pass. There is only 3 main assignments for this class. The two smaller portions are notecards based off the readings and randomly assigned worksheets. The majority of your grade is based off 2 papers each being single spaced, 12 font, minimum of 10 pages.
Assigns a LOT of reading and papers are obscenely long. Has a lot of fun and interesting lectures but his grading feedback is passive aggressive for no reason. Said once that he would love if he didn't legally have to assign work, then gives undergrads 10 page papers and complains that he has to grade them. It's a long wait for your paper back.
Attendance is random and 70% of your grade, so you have to show up to every class. Goodman is a very intelligent man and good lecturer, but grades harshly. I dont think he comes off as arrogant just well spoken and assertive. 2 10 page single spaced papers were tough but if you start early youll be good.
Very funny and entertaining lectures. Random attendance grades, but was somewhat lenient with making those up if you email him. 2 ten page journals, single spaced were required, but are easy as long as you start them early.
Do not take this class if you want an easy grade. I missed a few classes due to illness and ended up having to drop the class.
Great teacher. Go to class and you will succeed.
While the subject matter was interesting, his teaching style often made it difficult to follow the material. His lectures were often filled with religious slander. These topics will be discussed in a sociology course, but I believe there is a way to do so in a more respectful manner for practicing Catholics and Christians.
Dr. Goodman is a good professor with a great grasp on the material he teaches. His assigned papers are 10 pages but writing them according to the instructions gives a good outline. He is funny, informative and teaches in a way that keeps it interesting. Probably not the class for people who don't want to be an active part of the lecture.
Sure, Goodman is a subject matter expert when it comes to sociology. But the further I got into the course, the more it felt like him just pushing an agenda on me. Critical race theory, stating that there are more than two genders, downplaying white people, etc etc. Beware. Seems to care more about spreading these ideals that just teaching soci.
I took this class last semester as he was very knowledgeable it causes him to think everyone should be at his level. He will take off points for any possible reason, and when he gives feedback he is very passive aggressive. He also (without names) degrades students and talks about how he would laugh people out of a program if he could.
I absolutely love Ryan. He is one of my favorite professors. He has helped me so much with succeeding in this class. There is a lot of reading and writing, however, it does have a purpose and does not feel like busy work. He is always available outside of class to help and that has been incredibly helpful for my succeeding in his class.
Professor Goodman graded by few things, he was overwhelmingly positive and absolutely hilarious, lines such as, "stop patting yourself on the back, and start beating the crap out of the other guys". He held a tight grading criteria and the grade was split 50/50 note cards collected in class, and 10 2-page papers.
