His jokes aren't funny... at all. He makes a lot of mistakes when working in front of the lecture class and sometimes if he realizes that he has made an error, he tells the class to just forget about that particular example and moves on to something new instead of going back to fix it.
Really helpful outside of class. Class itself was huge, which negatively affected it.
Easy course, especially if you've taken calculus in high school. Funny prof. Sometimes he is so self-depricating it borders on awkward. Easy tests and assignments.
Hilarious prof! Good-natured and always generous with office hours. Midterm was a joke after his review session. Just go to class, pay attention, and you'll do fine with him. Whiteboards suck though.
funny guy...course got a lot better later in the term. i would rec taking it with him.
Split personality. Sarcastic and and funny during lectures. Really helpful and shy in office hours. Would husband.
Really funny. Very helpful. Tends to say a lot more than he writes during lecture, so pay attention.
Very enjoyable and informative lectures. He does a review class before each midterm and the final. They are incredibly helpful, so make sure you go to them. He also does a lot of examples in each class, so you understand what's going on. Funny guy too!
I am actually going to miss Calculus because of this man.
I highly recommend this prof. He is very good at teaching and uses a variety of examples when teaching a topic, that way you are better prepared for midterms and final. He actually makes you enjoy the class. He is very good natured and easy to approach!
Super helpful. Made me miss calc, which I never thought possible. Loved him. Best prof ever. Super funny.
He's such a great professor. I hated calc before this class and I'm really going to miss it now. Definitely take it with him, he's funny and can explain everything really well. He also answers any question you have, however stupid you think they may be. Midterms/finals are easy if you go to reviews.
Great guy to take calc from. If self-depricating and sarcasm are your favourite forms of humour, you should look no further. Despite a few mistakes on the board here and there, he owns the material and tries to make sure you do too. 5/5 Hope to take more courses with him.
Funny guy. Fairly easy, but be warned - the homework on webassign.com is waaaay easier than the midterms and final...so dont rely solely on the homework for studying
Calc was my favourite class this term thanks to his random stories and helpful notes (with the exception of some spontaneously generated examples). He did try his best to answer my questions, which I appreciate, but diverted some of them due to their time consuming nature. Otherwise, he should continue what he is doing. Overall a great prof!
Great guy! definitely go to his review lectures for the two midterms and the final
I took this with Hamilton last semester, failed it, and then took it again with a diff prof and failed it again with a lower mark! In retrospect Hamilton was awesome, and gives you every tool to do well. Listen to him and the helpful hints he provides.
It's only been 4 weeks, but he is so entertaining. He really boils the material down to the essentials without fixating on the unimportant. He also tells funny stories, which breaks up the boringness of the material.
BEST PROF EVER
Pretty good lectures with lots of examples. Do the homework and attend class and you should have no problems.
Cool guy and really easy going and funny. Boring subject made better.
Although he often made a lot of mistakes when calculating answers to example problems, he was a really good at teaching the material. He wanted his students to do well as he even made extra office hours available on weekends before the final exam. Definitely recommend taking a class with him.
He's an amazing prof! Not only is he hot, but he's good at math and able to teach you different ways to remember how to do specific problems! He does make mistakes sometimes during the notes so watch out for that! Also make sure you go to his review classes before the midterms and final because they are sooo much easier compared to what he does!
His self-depricating humor is worth going to class for.
Good notes, examples, teaching method, and personality! I would definitely retake calculus with him!
The bad: he makes about 2 typos per class. The good: hilarious, deprecating, devoted to his students, cringeworthy-in-a-good-way, super helpful, and always willing to see students. He is a great instructor today and in a few years will be the very best.
Wonderfully bizarre and entertaining.
This prof is amazing! I'm a geek and love calculus anyways but he made going to class a real treat. Not only does he make lectures super entertaining and fun, he's fair with his tests (all long answer final!) AND doesn't have an overpriced required text. He provided lots of free resources that were more than enough to compliment lectures.
This was the best math professor ever! Math 253 is a very hard course if you hate math or are not good at it. Ryan made it math 253, a hard course, easy. He's easy to approach and his tests are exactly like the examples you see in class. Definitely take math 253 with him if you can.
What can I say? Ryan is the man. Hilarious and excited to teach. Focuses on examples, though sometimes he picks pretty messy ones to do in class.
Motivated me to be a better student. Highly recommended.
Great Prof, easy to understand and explains things clearly!
The guy has a really likable personality and good humour, both of which come across in his lectures. He explains things clearly and if you can keep up with the difficulty of the examples he does in class then you'll have no problem with the course.
Amazing Prof!! Explains everything clearly and is really funny
Greatest Prof ever!
Wow, Ryan is not only a great person but a passionate instructor. It's easy to tell that he cares about helping others understand his chosen field, and he obviously puts lots of thought and work into his job. MATH335 at U of C is not an easy course, but he made what could have been very scary less so. Keep an eye out for this lovely human.
Prof. Hamilton is hilarious! He makes math an enjoyable experience and he is very knowledgeable. He does some complex examples in class but the exams were fair if you did the homework worksheets, webwork assignments, and practice tests.
I took this course last year with Prof. Brenken, but ultimately withdrew because I didn't have any idea what was going on. Ryan made it a lot more accessible (be warned- it is still a brutal course!). He is also extremely sarcastic, which is essential for an early morning class.
Nice prof, easy class!
335 is a brutally difficult course and Ryan has high expectations for your work, but he prepares you well for tests and assignments. Strong lecturer and is thorough in explaining content. Doesn't post notes online so attendance (or a friend willing to give you notes) is mandatory.
Best math prof ever! He is always there for help. The assignments and midterms were easy, but the final was hard. I went from an A- to a B-. Make sure you study.
Best math prof ever, willing to help out beside office hours and very down to earth and easy going. Amazing lectures and a wonderful eye candy.
Listen, I may not have gotten a great grade in the course just because of the actual course, but Hamilton is the one that can save your butt. He uses harder examples to prepare you. Incredibly helpful, understands the material better than the rest, and extremely empathetic to the scorn that is calculus. I lived for that fact of the day.
The lecture is interesting and the professor is attractive!XD
During a typical lecture Ryan Ryans harder than Ryan typically Ryans. 1010 would take again.
I've taken 3 300 level courses with Ryan. He doesn't make it easy and tends to assume more background than many students have. But it's worth it. Try to keep up, and you'll be left with a much more thorough and deep understanding of the material. Brutal finals, but he curves them so you will likely get a similar letter grade, regardless.
Laid back, funny and very kind. Easy midterms but tough final.
He's very funny and he makes class interesting for everyone. He's always there to help, too bad I did not take advantage of it. The midterms were not so hard, but the final was!
Tests are generally fair but have tricky questions. Easy to drop from A to B because tests are worth lots and have few quedtions. Attend lectures because he tells you the emphasis of the material on the test. Very systematic and I'd highly recommend.

Very systematic and I'd highly recommend.
Great examples!
His facts of the day were fabulous
He was an amazing professor! Attend class and he will tell you the emphasis of the tests and very CLEARLY state what you need to know! Facts of the day were hilarious too!
Probably one of the best profs this department has. He's extremely clear about his expectations for assignments and tests and gives you ample practice material and direction on how to study. While the course material was very tough, he was very eager to help and was extremely friendly.
Ryan is so funny! Fact of the day was my favourite part! (jokes about imodium and his mother-in-law) His notes are very clear yet he goes quickly. Will answer your questions in class and outside of class. Gets down to the important stuff ! Textbook: only buy if you need practice problems. Great prof! Try and get him for STAT!
Hamilton was very helpful to students and often gave hints as to what would be on the tests and assignments.
Really engaged and good sense of humour. Had him a few times now. Consistently great.
Saved me from stats. No BS in his lectures. Only what you need to do well. He kept claiming that his facts of the day will save my life. I think he's probably right.
He is a math god who doesn't know the difference between a porpoise and a manatee. Good natured and always willing to help.
Ryan seems like a great guy but you could tell he was out of his element with this class. There were many times in his lectures when he got tangled up in equation where he even confused himself. His lectures were funny none the less, and if I was to take another class with it would probably be in calculus as that seems to be more his speed.
This was a brutally hard course. Long assignments and really hard midterm and final. Ryan tried his best to make it fun and interesting. If you like deprecating humour he is your guy. Very fun and approachable.
I have taken three honours pure math courses with Ryan. For each of them, he has a clear set of expectations for each test, but definitely makes them challenging. Really invested in his students.
Ryan is an excellent prof in this department! Always willing to help and very approachable. He did actually prepare each class and handle it very well even though he'd never teach stats before. Well, maybe he needs to be more confident in what he's teaching. Amazing Lecture! Highly recommended!
Super nice guy and really laid back. Tests were really tough, but the course was curved in the end.
Ryan is an all-around great guy and very clear with expectations for tests and assignments. He definitely doesn't hand out easy grades, but if you work hard it's an easy A. He also baked for the class for the final.
This man is amazing! In class it seems like he's going too fast and youll be a little lost but when studying for tests his notes were amazing!!! Go to class and get the notes and you will surely excel!
If you like self-deprication and sarcasm this is your guy. He was new to stats and admitted it. Made a boring subject quite bearable. Tests and assignments were straight-forward. Definitely take a math course with him if you get the chance.
Still don't get why people think that he's hot but to be honest Hamilton is an amazing lecturer, funny and super helpful during office hour. But somebody need to tell him to improve his tiny handwriting because I think my eyes' number actually increased after taking his class. His notes are also very detailed in order to prepare for exams.
Amazing.
Awesome lecturer and very helpful in office hours. Tries to inject humour into class which makes the 3 hour lectures much more tolerable.
Hands down the best prof I have come across in uni so far !!! organized and Really helpful and always there to help - be it emails , after class or in office hours (he has lots of office hours which make things easier) . the class is not an easy one but the way he teaches it , helps more than anything. pretty laid back .
The big bonus with Ryan is that he is funny, his humour really breaks up the dull math atmosphere. His examples are difficult which is great because it makes the tests and webwork seem easier. Tests are quite challenging, but he strongly hints what to study. No time wasted on proofs, only examples! The best of 3 math profs I have had at this uni.
Amazing professor ! prepares students well for exams and future courses by doing various forms of examples in class. I think due to his humor , the entire class is able to pay more attention as to what he is teaching . Definitely recommended for any math course , because his approach to teaching is exactly what students need .
Down to earth, eager to help, lots of office hours and very funny. Beware his tests though! You need to attend class and make sure you understand those examples.
Analysis is an incredibly hard class, and I couldn't imagine taking it with anyone else. Ryan is seriously awesome.
A really nice professor and a really nice human being . Eager to help , clear with the expectations , provides lots of resources, patient with all questions and easily approachable . You will rarely see a professor as good as him . You need to attend class and understand the examples he does in class . Would definitely take again .
Dr Hamilton was a fantastic professor. Very kind, enthusiastic, knowledgable, organized, and always available to help.
Ryan Hamilton is an awesome professor. He was funny and made the class interesting. Taking a Calc II course in the summer could have been a lot worse with some other Profs. I lucked out! Study hard as this class is really tough, but if you study hard, you will do fine! I would recommend to take his lecture if you have the chance!
He is amazing. Go for the examples and stay for the facts of the day.
Best math prof !
Funny and makes lectures quite enjoyable. Explains everything really clearly, just pay attention and you'll be fine
Super funny and makes lecture fun. super good at explaining topics and does loads of examples
Ryan Hamilton was an absolutely amazing professor. He worked hard to get through all the material that would be on the midterms just to give you a couple lectures of midterm review. I actually looked forward to going to math everyday. Keep your ears open for his facts-of-the-day as well. Absolutely hysterical!
Best prof I had in my first semester. My favourite feature of his is the pace he teaches. He knows when to slow down and explain things carefully or when to speed up and be frugal with time. He also has this "fact of the day" segment in his classes where he tells you some random "fact" he found in the internet - really great to help you relax.
Drastically altered my perception of this subject for the better. Demanded a lot from his students and gave brilliant lectures. Highly recommended for all abstract math courses.
Awesome teacher, he was enthusiastic and cheerful most classes despite having a broken mic for a long time. His tests were pretty easy but you'd definitely have to study quite a bit to be successful.
Amazing prof! If you're doing Math anytime, look out for him because Dr. Hamilton is definitely one of the best Math profs you can find(most will agree). Clear, concise, helpful, humorous - overall best prof I had this semester.
Dr. Hamilton is the best lecturer of all time. He's hilarious and enthusiastic. He has lots of office hours (and extended his hours before the final). He also did extra review sessions. I went to his office hours twice. Despite asking him stupid questions, he was still nice and welcoming to me both times. His explanations were clear and helpful.
Best professor in the department, I wish I could take every class with Ryan. He had office hours almost everyday, and even held a review session on his own time the day before the final. This class was very difficult but I will probably take Analysis II of Ryan's teaching it!
AWESOME!
Great instructor and person teaching an insanely hard course. I would have drowned taking it with anyone else.
Ryan is one of the best professors I've had so far! Clear and organized lecture, always there for you, the course is really hard but he's amazing!
Best math prof I've had.
Ryan is hilarious and his lectures are not boring to sit through. Simply put, if you put the effort in you will see results. Amazing prof overall.
Hilarious, tons of office hours and always there for you.
Ryan is a really funny professor and he makes class (and math) pretty interesting. I personal don't like math but Ryan made it bearable. Make sure you attend lectures! He goes through good examples and he's really there for students. Don't half-ass this course and do ALL the assignments and lab problem sets. Every percent matters!
Hardest class I ever took. It would have been impossible without Ryan.
He presents well-organized lecture notes with good examples. Halfway through the class he would often take a break to talk about a "fact of the day" which was great! His humour made the class enjoyable, and I will definitely take another lecture with him again!!
I am terrible at math. If not for the graces of this divine being, I would be relegated to the infernal abyss (academic probation).
Ive taken a few courses with Ryan. They are always intense and the tests difficult. Pay attention to what he does in lecture because it appears again and again on tests. Really good guy and fun to talk about the subject with.
His lecture notes are really helpful!
He's a gr8 prof m8 you'll r8 him 8/8 if you take his class. He'll illumin8, there's no deb8. You'll appreci8 all he does to help you and your classm8s. Don't deny your f8, it's not a b8, you'll learn to differenti8.
He explains the concepts really well. Best proff to take it with because he makes a boring class to be a fun one. Very enthusiastic.
10/10 Would suffer again.
Ryan honestly changed my outlook on calculus. This was my second time taking the course and Ryan actually made it an enjoyable experience. He really wants to see his students succeed and is always eager to help and quick to reply to emails. For those who hate math - Ryan will make the class bearable and with some hard work you'll get a great grade!
Ryan is actually the best. I hated math so much but he made me not want to end it all. RYAN IS THE BEST
Best prof I've had so far! I loved his sense of humour, he made me look forward to calculus everyday. He is very strategic in how he teaches (especially at his exam review sessions), so you'll always know what to expect on his tests. He also paid attention to questions students struggled on in the assignments and showed solutions to them in class.
I was really apprehensive about taking calculus and was pretty afraid of not being able to use a calculator. However, Ryan is an exceptional prof and really made it easier for me. Lyryx assignments felt a bit overkill but Ryan extended the due dates appropriately so that we would be able to get help during tutorial. He's funny and very helpful.
If you have to take any math classes, try to take it with him! He has a way of making calculus interesting which I thought was impossible. But seriously he wants everyone to succeed and the final was easier than the past finals.
I have never done well in any Math class in my life nor have I enjoyed it. However I can confidently say that if you have to take a math class, make sure it's with R. Hamilton! Clear lectures, although he may seem a bit fast at times. He's an absolute beauty and gives facts of the day each lecture and mixed with his dry humor makes it enjoyable!!
One midterm, one final, assignments worth more than midterm and they're online so just use Wolfram Alfa :P He's funny and gives "facts of the day" which are either interesting or hilarious. I hate math but his lectures were interesting. The only reason I got the grade I did was because I never practiced so DO IT! Studied a lot for final though
Great prof
Dr. Hamilton is hilarious. He understands the material extremely well and can somehow keep 200 people interested calculus for 50 minutes. His lectures move quickly, however it's because he goes over many examples so that you understand the material. Taking this course with Hamilton is honestly a blast. His tests are fair and homework is pretty easy
It is an absolute joy to have been in Ryan's class! From helpful tips on calculus problems to hilarious anecdotes about porcupines and wedding rings, there is never a dull moment with this great prof! 100-100 recommend!
Super nice prof, very approachable. I personally didn't love his lectures, I found that he would try make up problems and then couldn't figure them out and would resort to wolfram alpha alot... If you're decent at math, you can skip the lectures. Midterm was fair, final was quite easy - make sure you go to the review session.
Best math prof you will ever have! explained everything really well and in great detail. He really cares about the students doing well.
Ryan is an amazing professor. He really wants students to be successful and does what he can to help. He's a really nice and funny prof. I recommend others to take a class with him.
He is a great professor. I really enjoyed his lectures and do recommend others to take his class. He's a really nice person and cares about his students.
Absolutely amazing professor. Answers all questions super respectfully, is very knowledgeable and actually cares how you do in the course. Gives lots of supplementary materials and puts all his notes/past exams etc online. He gives you a fact of the day everyday and hes hilarious. Easily one of, if not the best professor I've ever had.
Just Take Him. The Best.
A fantastic professor from math departmentjust enjoy his lecture
Ryan Hamilton is the greatest thing at the uofc, he made math my favorite subject and gives you no excuse for you not to do well. The best prof in the northern hemisphere , take notes do the online questions and review the examples he provides along with the tutorials problems. If you see this Ryan 3
I took Math 331 with Ryan in the spring. I am a them student and I hated the math courses I had to take after a rough experience in 267. I was dreading this course, but he made it so straightforward, pleasant and even a little fun sometimes. Go to his office hours, ask for study tips and do your work!
He is a knowledgeable and competent professor for sure but my overall impression was that he knows he's too good to be teaching first-year introductory course and wants to be somewhere else. He moves at a too-high pace that is impossible to follow and skips many steps because he can do them in his head because he is a math professor.
Ridiculously hard course that he is super passionate about. It has a reputation and I was dreading it, but somehow it worked out fine (at least up until the final).
Ryan is an amazing prof. I used to be scared of Calculus but he made it so easy for me. His lectures are great and he gives really good feedback. Very funny and enthusiastic.
Hilarious and a very nice person. He goes fast and expects you to keep up, but I found he would slow down a lot in office hours. Highly recommend.
Ryan speaks clearly, posts notes online, and communicates topics very well to a degree. However, he speaks as if all of his students have a PHD in Math. I could enter a lecture understanding a topic and he would review it in such a mathematical way I left confused. He also writes at the speed of lighting. So I had to teach myself the course.
I am a maths major, and boy was this course hard. It was terrifying at first, but eventually I felt comfortable in it. Ryan is incredibly enthusiastic, available and genuine in his love for the subject and investment in his students.
I was absolutely scared of math coming into U of C and I was ready to hate 249. I finished the term with it as my favourite course. Dr. Hamilton was the best.
Really hard course. Ryan made it bearable. By the end of the term it was the only lecture I looked forward to!
People worry about this course too much. The midterm questions were straight from in-class examples, past midterms and the weekly labs. Just pay attention and keep up and it isn't nearly as bad as some people say. Also the facts of the day kept me sane.
In my second year of uni Ryan is probably one of the best profs I've had. This class is hard if you're not a math person like myself but he makes it understandable and interesting. He also tells a funny fact every class which are great. I went into this class thinking I would do poor but I have come out of it with an A-, but it is lots of work
Nice prof funny. lots of review offered. make sure you study a lot!
This was the hardest course I've ever taken. Ryan is so passionate and wants his students to success. Posts all notes and many past exams online. But none of that matters if you don't work for it. Go to his office hours and don't give up. You'll make it fam.
I love math but am an applied math major so I put this course (and analysis 2) off until my 4th year because everyone said it was brutal however I found it to be fun, very interesting and graded very fairly. He has changed the format from 2015 so there is no midterm, only 5 quizzes and only your best 3 count, final tough but was only worth 35%.
The greatest
After taking over 40 classes, Ryan is the best professor I've had at the University of Calgary. This was a tough course, and I had heard awful things about it but it ended up being extremely fun and interesting. He makes you work for your grades but is willing to help every step of the way. 10/10 would recommend.
Was probably the toughest course of my life but Ryan was a great teacher. Encouraged me to stay in the class instead of withdrawing. keep it real, ryan.
A very difficult course but Ryan is a great teacher. He is passionate about what he teaches and truly cares about his students. Attend every lecture and be prepared to work hard. If you can do his in-class examples with confidence, the exams will be a breeze. He has a good sense of humour which helps keep long lectures more interesting.
Incredibly kind, passionate and hilarious. I hated math before this course and it turned out to be my favourite course of the term. Tests were tough but pretty fair.
Ryan is a great guy and almost makes you look forward to coming to Calculus class (almost). His approach is slightly fast and can be difficult to follow sometimes. Come to class, pay attention and study hard. Also, weirdly enough, the ladies love Ryan. I don't get it, but they love him.
Great prof!
amazing prof!
Ryan is caring and generous with his time, and really wants his students to succeed. It was a joy to take this ridiculous and painful course with him.
Ryan was amazing!!
Ryan always made himself available to help students outside of class. He had a lot of office hours and the final review was helpful. However, I found him hard to follow in class and often wondered if it was his charisma that tricked people into thinking he was actually teaching. I left the class with as much knowledge as I started.
The hardest and most rewarding course I took in the math degree. Beware of the workload and difficulty of this course- it will sneak up on you! His passion for analysis is obvious.
The fourth and last course I took with Ryan before graduation. I'm continuing with mathematics after graduation partly because of him.
More facts of the day, less Lagrange multipliers
My favourite math prof along with Cunningham. A lot of senior math courses don't really push the students deeply into the material. Analysis is different. It is brutal and deep and interesting. It is a ton of work so don't take it unless you actually like the subject.
The class was ok, and so was the prof. It wasn't as spectacular of an experience as other comments seem to suggest. Ryan is funny though.
Ryan is amazing. Facts of the day sustained me.
Wonderful guy. I'm pretty terrible at math, but Ryan was always really supportive and tried to keep us entertained.
This course is a killer. Do every single thing Ryan asks you to do. The tests and quizzes consist 100% of stuff from notes, assignments and practice quizzes. Really interesting material and Ryan presents it well.
Ryan had made this course enjoyable through his self-deprecating humour and facts of the day. Even though it was his first time teaching Calc II for ENGG, he did a solid job. He also posts his notes after class and that was helpful so I could absorb the info even better. The best way to do well is to do the labs and review sheets posted.
Definitely very charismatic and funny, but I honestly didn't learn too much in the lectures. Maybe it's just me, but I'm going to have to disagree with the majority. I attended regularly since the beginning, and I felt as though it was often difficult to follow at times. I ended up teaching the course to myself and found labs a lot more helpful.
Really straight forward. Attend lectures, do all labs and do the posted exam reviews. Easy A.
I took the analysis courses with Ryan. It was my final year of applied math and they were the hardest courses by far. He is passionate about analysis, and despite really hard assignments and tests is always willing to sit down and help you out. It has turned into a right of passage for maths students.
Really good at teaching, just do the practice tests and you will be set
Straightforward and entertaining prof. Do the practice quizzes and problems and go to lectures. Really nice and funny prof.
My favourite prof this term even though it's my least favourite subject.
Absolutely incredible. Always to the point and does his best to prepare students for the exams. Do everything he tells you to do and you will get through this course. Very funny and incredibly helpful in office hours. Can go a bit fast so be prepared to work.
He goes by the topics fast and skips over steps in the example so be ready to fill it in yourself. He's a really great prof overall though.
The greatest. Super responsive to emails and help requests. Lots of review and examples in lecture and very funny. Go to class. He goes fast and it's easy to fall behind.
Not done the class yet but great teacher. Midterms are fair and made to be like the practice ones posted online. Love the fact of the day
Ryan Hamilton is the best prof for math!! He made me be so be so successful in this course!! love him and his facts would definitely take again
Great !
Ryan's facts of the day are great but this class is beyond difficult. He's definitely one of the better profs for MATH but be ready for a tough final.
I'm switching majors into Math and Stat because of this class and Ryan. He is incredibly passionate and funny and obviously wants his students to succeed.
Just an all around solid guy. His facts of the days make going to class fun!
I love this man! He is frickin hilarious, has incredible passion for what he does, and is amazing at teaching (although he does go a bit fast during lectures). He is to the point and makes us feel like he is on our side when it comes to taking tests and grading. Also, his facts of the day are awesome!
He's the full package, easy on the eyes, hilarious and intelligent. Be sure to attend lectures regularly and mindful when he reviews concepts before the midterms because they're similar questions, same method and technique with just different numbers.
He makes the class more enjoyable with his fact of the day and random ramblings. Definitely be prepared to do a lot of practice questions in order to understand the content though.
Wonderful prof. Outstanding lectures. Not that much of a sunny personality when your in his office though. He just turns blank and will practically stare at you if your question is remotely dumb.
Can not stress how much I loved taking this course with him. Dr. Hamilton is an all round intelligent guy. Ryan sparked a keen interest in calculus and made me see how beautiful math really is. He teaches with passion, is super funny and makes you enjoy lectures. Difficult course that requires work, but if you practice enough its fair game.
One of those memorable prof's that you'll remember for the rest of your life. I walked out of the final slightly saddened that this was my last math course, as I had oddly become fascinated by calculus. Never had the chance to say this, but thank you Dr, Hamilton! I always looked forward to your lectures despite them being at 8am.
Ryan is among the best of math professors. He turned me from a C to an A+ Student in Calculus. He is always ready and willing to help, his examinations are quite fair, and he uploads EVERYTHING online. He is hardworking, talented, kind, and hilarious. Definitely made the transition into University a lot more fun. Keep up your amazing work, Ryan!
Ryan is an absolute beauty, I'm a guy who hates math and R Hamlit made it very enjoyable (especially with his daily facts). He addresses the fact that students are only really in his 249 for mandatory requirements and he understands we all don't love math as much as him. I find him to go over stuff fairly quickly, make sure you review often. 10/10
I've always been a firm believer in the saying that "students can't learn from people they don't like". Which is why I think students learn so well from Hamilton. His charisma and intelligence is super likeable, you'll feel motivated to attend lectures and put is effort into his class. Bonus: he's a probably the best looking prof at U of C.
Ryan is a fantastic prof who makes the transition into uni very smooth. The fact that he posts all of his notes online is excellent; allows you to pay attention better in class. Hilarious guy; makes class enjoyable with his facts of the day. Only negative is that his Lyryx solutions are sometimes difficult to follow, but overall, he's amazing.
I think Ryan is an excellent prof, particularly for first year students. He does a good job of balancing being professional, yet down to earth and approachable. He's interested and passionate about the subject, but is aware that it's a dry topic so he makes a good effort to make it entertaining and fun. Would definitely take again.
Incredibly caring and passionate about analysis. This course is hard. Do everything he says and you'll be ok.
Hamilton does his best to cushion this transition from high school math to university calculus, where calculators are not permitted. Attendance isn't mandatory, as everything is posted online; however practice is mandatory. If you do all of the practice exams that he posts online, prior to midterms and the final, you will be fine. He is great.
Excellent prof!! He's super enthusiastic during lecture and gives random facts as a break. He's a really relatable professor which makes a course like Calculus way more entertaining than usual. Great at giving examples during class and interacting with him is usually okay. Really funny guy and super helpful outside of class. He cares about students
I was worried for calculus as I saw how my friends cursed Math 31. It was a miracle that someone as great as Ryan became my professor. He is a good teacher who is also likable due to his humourous and entertaining ramblings. I zone out at times during the 8 am lecture so I had to do a bit more work at home but he is still one of the greatest profs!
THE GREATEST! Not only is he super kind and knowledgable, he makes Math 335 a lot easier to understand since it is such a difficult course. I really enjoyed his enthusiasm and passion for the subject and he posts everything online to help us do well. Such an amazing professor and I would recommend him for any other math course.
Ryan is a great prof who really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. He makes his lectures fun to attend by adding facts of the day and jokes! I would highly suggest taking his class, he made calculus fun!
An actual gift to this earth
Before this math i had a 2 year break since math 30 and ryan made this class so simply idk how ! show up to class and copy all notes and just review once a day and you are set and for midterms and final go to d2l and only study the previous midterms and finals as the questions are straight from their.
There are not enough good words I can say about Ryan. He teaches Math in a way that is accessible to everyone: interesting and engaging while delivering content that even "Math Haters" can enjoy. He's hilarious, kind, brilliant, and made the whole experience amazing. I want to take more classes with him simply for the sake of having him as my prof.
Generally speaking, Ryan was amazing. He's a math wizard, which can be seen as a good or a bad thing, depending on how well you do in math yourself. Quizzes and exams are completely based on lecture, but he posts all of his class notes on D2L after lectures so they're easily accessible for students. Would definitely take his class again!
Super easy class and he explained everything very well.
Hands down best prof I've had, so funny and inspirational, can talk about other subjects other than math and very relatable. Best part about lectures were his jokes, facts of the day and personality, easy to tell that he cares what he is teaching you and you can't go wrong if you attend lecture and review notes and practice. Choose if possible. 5/5
this is by far the greatest prof I've ever had he made everything so easy and was always understanding :)
makes lectures interesting and easy to understand. he does the homework questions in class for everybody (hw was worth 20%). posts his exact lecture notes online. responds to emails quickly. provides review sessions (if there's time for it). he truly cares for his students. doesn' go too much into theory since he knew we're in engineering. love him
The absolute best professor I've ever had the privilege of learning from. His lectures were enjoyable, he provided all the means to succeed in lecture and outside, provided review sessions, answered emails quickly. Keeps learning simple so concepts don't get muddled, and ensures you learn only what you need to learn. TRULY cares for his students.
goes through the notes quite quickly but makes the content enjoyable and understandable
Do you want a prof who clearly and concisely illustrates concepts? Do you enjoy cynical jokes? Do you wish to improve your culinary skills? If so, then don't think twice and take Ryan's class if you can.
This man is basically a God, taking his notes is basically writing the bible. He is the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, Amen. At the begining of the course there was nothing, on the first day he created limits. Then Ryan said let there be derivatives and the chain rule appeared. Ryan then said be fruitful and increase the area under the curve
The only thing I really enjoyed in first year engineering. I love his crystal-clear teaching style, sense of humour, sarcasm and authentic interactions with students.
Ryan Hamilton was the best prof Ive ever had. Hes extremely knowledgeable with what he teaches and is so funny too. I genuinely enjoyed every lecture I attended and would definitely recommend. His notes are super clear and youre guaranteed to do well. Dont skip class, his facts and self depreciating jokes kept me going, and brightened each day.
The guys lecture material is as good as his sense of humor.
Ryan is a god among men. He makes calc funny and relatable rather than a boring, regular math class. I highly recommend taking this course with him. He prepares you for the final very well and his midterms are verbatim from the practice one's provided on D2L
Hands down best Prof ever
Ryan is absolutely incredible. I adore him so much. He is the nicest and most funny prof ever. You will for sure succeed in his classes. Even though math sucks sometimes, he feels your pain and brightens each lecture with his jokes and facts.
By far the best prof I've had. His notes are amazing - clear and detailed. He's hilarious and genuinely cares for students. The practice midterms are the same as the actual midterms. Homework load really isn't bad at all ( 3-4 short assignments). He informs students about which midterm preps to go to as he always has our best interest at heart
Taking MATH 355 with Ryan Hamilton was a pleasure. While a difficult course to take, Dr. Hamilton made it an amazingly enjoyable and engaging experience. His lectures are engaging they are immensely informative and delivered with clear enthusiasm. Truly one of the best lectures. Dr. Hamilton clearly cares about his students and marks very fairly.
I took Honours Real Analysis I with Ryan this fall; the material was very challenging, but Ryan explained the concepts clearly and in great detail, was very fair with his marking, and was always willing to help you and answer your questions. He also has a great sense of humour and is very caring. With him, analysis is an art.
this course beat the crap out of me. i wouldnt have made it through if it wasnt for Ryan. hes hilarious, genuinely cares about his students & want them to succeed and is a flat out genius. i was scared to take this course ngl but just work hard push through and i promise you its worth it. Ryan makes it manageable and you can do it! he has your back
I have no idea what just happened
With his crystal clear teaching and examples, Ryan is a amazing prof who is passionate about math and genuinely cares for his students. Even though I did not do as well as expected(this was on my part) this class was very enjoyable with his facts every now and then!
A true gem and absolutely hilarious. Explained what was going on, and exactly what would be tested, very well. Took his 8:00AM and he really kept it engaging despite how drowsy I was. Follow his advice and you'll do well, almost guaranteed. Tutorials are trash, but Hami-boy can get you through with the lectures alone.
Makes Calculus fun (if that's possible) this was my favourite course this semester mostly thanks to his ability to teach the content in an understand able way. I'm not great at math but I did enjoy his class.
Best teacher ever
He is a great prof who is incredibly engaging, FACTS OF THE DAY! are the best. Teaching pace is acceptable. Only drawback is since he is so incredibly smart, he occasionally assumes you know the ins and outs of these rectal exams called related rates. His midterms and final were brutally hard compared to assignments and quizzes.
Truly is one of the best profs uofc has to offer. He's so kind & genuinely cares for his students. His lecture notes were very easy to follow, and were in proper detail so most times if you looked back you wouldn't be lost/confused. He's also extremely accessible, in-person & through emails and responds to them very quickly. 10/10 would recommend!
Absolute gem. Hilarious, kind, caring. Has adorable facts of the day. Posts everything he teaches, and tries his best to explain. Midterms and finals were hard, but practice is key. Took his 8am class 4 times a week, he made them doable by being his fabulous self.
Definitely my favourite prof, going to his class is what motivated me through the day. His sense of humour is amazing and really cares about his students. Gives lots of practice questions and gives cute little facts of the day. Would love to take another course with him.
Dr. Hamilton is an amazing professor who teaches difficult concepts in a careful and effective way so that student always learn tons in his classes.
Ryan Hamilton manages to make calculus lectures engaging and interesting, which is a feat in itself. He's widely loved by everyone in the lecture, and for good reason. 10/10
Hamilton is a legend. He makes lectures interesting with his humour and makes math easily understandable by thoroughly explaining examples. He gets you to understand then purely memorize. Facts of the day give lectures a nice twist. At the end of the day, Id still take Hamilton over elsabrouty. After all theres a reason he won 2 awards this year
Ryan Hamilton is an absolute gem. He loves his work and always brightened everyone's day with his great sense of humor and interesting stories. His pace of teaching was very fast though (too fast for me) which meant I would sometimes be confused after lectures. If you have this problem, definitely make an effort to catch him at his office hours.
Very good prof
Great professor! The lectures are done very well and the tests are fair. The class is hard but Professor Hamilton posts so much online that it makes the content manageable. He is helpful if you go into his office hours and is overall an amazing professor!
Hamilton is one of my favourite profs. He makes lectures engaging with his humour and facts of the day. Learned a lot and had fun doing it. Our lectures always ended in applause for a reason.
Facts of day are great, good at explaining and giving resources to help you succeed, and overall attitude during lectures is spectacular.
Dr. Hamilton is an absolute genius, so caring and respected! If it wasnt for him, I would have dropped this class long back. It was him who motivated me to continue to work hard and helped me so much by giving feedback. He loves Analysis and loves sharing the knowledge he has with students. His teaching style is amazing and easy to understand!
There's many times you may feel lost, but Ryan is very approachable and as long as you're willing to work hard, you'll do fine!
Answers questions really well and is great at keeping everyone's attention.
he is awesome
Dr. Hamilton held very engaging lectures that were entertaining and shorter than the slotted time. Material was covered fast but efficiently and he was always available outside of class to explain. He took notes very fast but they were very well written and posted within 30 min of lecture ending. Final for course was very rushed.
Hamilton is a good professor but slightly overrated. His fact of the day is a great technique to keep student's attention. The exams in this class are not made by him so you are at a slight disadvantage. He does lots of examples but goes a little too fast sometimes. Overall would recommend but not the greatest of all time by any means.
One of the few professors at U of C that stood out during first year engineering. The future of the math department if you ask me ... Generally, seems as if he cares about his students and has a way of keeping your attention; also, fact of the day is a great idea.
Great class, professor Hamilton is very likeable and positive, easy to understand and an astonishingly capable teacher. The course however is no joke, quizzes are, but MC tests are NOT. You will need to practice! TA's sometimes more easy to access for support. Overall challenging but not without good instruction!
Amazing prof, really makes online learning extra fun. The course itself is pretty hard but I got through without any extra textbook practice since he explains the questions so clearly. Highly recommended.
The lectures were very fun to attend. Went over more complex problems and taught us different methods to solve them.
Ryan is very outgoing and great to have as a prof. He knows his stuff and cares for his students. Attend class, take notes, do practice problems that are assigned on MathXL.
His lectures were amazing, proper content with a twist of humor.
I took this class during fall 2020, and Dr. Hamilton made it possible to learn calculus even in the online environment, even with an asynchronous class.
I loved this class. If you ever get the chance to take a course taught by Prof Hamilton definitely do. Each lecture was engaging and entertaining. He is enthusiastic, knowledgeable and relatable. Explains concepts very well. Keeps attention well.
Fantastic professor, made class enjoyable to attend. Answered questions well and responds to emails near instantly.
Really, really genuinely nice guy. It's a shame he only hosted two live lectures during this course, with the rest being recordings. He's hilarious and I would have liked to interact with him live more. Great professor, very clear in his explanations and willing to go overtime to help us understand.
Respectful and smart guy. He made the content look easy and put effort into his teaching.
Even though he's very good you should probably go with elsa just because he's the course coordinator and he makes all the tests and assignments.
Worst professor I had this semester. This was an in person class while Dr. Hamilton did live zoom 'lectures' where he solved questions, or attempted to. His repeatedly calculation errors/misspoke/misread the questions various times, making it seems like he did not understand the content himself , confusing a lot of student as a result.
Has no clue what he is doing most of the time. The online lectures were confusing and when you asked him a question he always struggled to find the right answer. I relied really heavily on the PREP101 courses and I think that's the only reason I passed this course.
His recorded lectures were great, but he has a very relaxing voice. which can be a blessing or a curse on certain days. When doing examples, he really clears up every concept. He is very active on discussion boards and quick to correct his own mistakes on the rare occasion he makes them.
Great online synchronous and asynchronous, funny, engaging, clear writing and easy to understand on 1.5/2x speed
Prof hamilton is a great dude. Lectures were easy to understand, and although he made some calculation errors as some other students mentioned, his theory was clearly accurate and explained well. He is one of those profs that clearly cares about his students.
During lecture videos, he would start by explaining the harder concepts then work around to the easier ones and go back to the harder ones again. It was confusing and honestly, at some point I started going to watch khan-academy videos, then go watch his videos to understand what he was trying to say.
Overall a good professor who has good lectures and tutorials. His midterm and final was difficult but not unfair
His class is difficult, but his online lectures were fairly detailed and precise. The class requires a lot of practice and time to spend taking notes. In the end it is worth it all.
I haven't taken his course yet, but after the first lecture i can say with full certainty using my massive brain that this professor is the greatest prof to ever walk into the stinky halls of the pseudoscience building of the kinesiology.
Explains concepts well
I had to retake this class due to previously failing with another professor and the difference between that professor and Dr. Hamilton is night and day. Very easy to talk to him and ask questions and tons of practice problems to properly learn how to attack the problems. Easily one of the best math professors at the university.
Ryan is a gem. This class is very hard and it was his first time teaching it. I think it's an arguably difficult course. But he taught it well, responded to emails and created fair circumstances to get a good grade in the end. Holds a ton of office hours, very organized and really cares about his students. Also he is a beast at marking.
Ryan is awesome, I had him twice this semester. Provides a lot of support from practice problems to office hours. This class is not easy but he really helped me understand. Such a smart guy and very funny and caring too. Take Ryan if its an option!
Honestly, this man single handedly kept me in my degree stream by being understanding and teaching calc 3 like a normal human being instead of a pure math bot. I would buy him a beer if he would let me.
Shouldn't have been that difficult. My lowest grade before this was an A-.
I found the final exam to be quite tough, though I hesitate to take this out on Dr. Hamilton because it was likely the course itself. That said, Dr. Hamilton is easily one of the best professors around the University of Calgary, esp. the math department. He's got an amazing sense of humour and a passion for math and for helping students. Recommend!
He is actually the only reason I am even remotely enjoying Calc3 right now. I'm being so serious can he teach every Math class ever? He is hilarious and so helpful and so accommodating I actually have no complaints.
He is one of the best profs for sure! Always responds to emails within like an hour, super funny in lecture, and explains content well! He really cares about his students.
Great hilarious teacher overall, gives great lectures and explains things very well, class itself is a bit difficult and the questions he gives are a bit difficult however midterm and final are multiple choice and the difficult questions do help get a better understanding of the topic
Dr. Hamilton is a great professor and an even better guy. His funny and charming demeanor made his lecture one of my favorite parts the day. The course was challenging, but Dr. Hamilton inspired me to persevere.
Professor Hamilton has been by far one of - if not the greatest professor's that I have worked with. His passion in teaching is reflected through the participation in lectures from students. He is an extremely respected professor who deserves nothing short of 5 stars. If you have Ryan Hamilton in any course you are very lucky.
Take any class you can with Dr. Hamiliton, you wont regret it. Very intellegent, amazing lecturer, and just genuinely good guy. Very clear on what you would be graded on and doesn't go through the course like a math robot.
One of the best professors I've had. He explains concepts with detail and solves example problems with great clarity. He also has a great sense of humour. The grading criteria is also clear and super generous. It is not required to go to lectures, but I would highly recommend going because his lectures are just amazing and very enjoyable.
Great guy, and a pretty good prof. The tests and assignments were a bit crazy (there were some unanswerable questions), however you got full marks as long you set the question up. The course itself is difficult, and I probably wouldn't have gotten such a high mark if it wasn't for him! He cares about his students a lot, and is easy to contact.
Top G prof and Top G TAs
Hamilton is a nice guy, but his teaching could definitely use some improvements if I am going to be honest. His response to questions is always very generic and not super helpful
He is one of the best math profs I have ever had. His online lectures were clear, and the expectations for both exams were set out clearly, with a lot of practice material giving you a sense of the exams. If you put in the work and put in the hours (i.e. do webwork and complete weekly worksheets), you'll be set. Cool guy, great communication.
He's good at teaching, but is occasionally confusing. Professors and TAs clarify doubts. Grading is tough - my group always lost marks on worksheets. Multiple choice tests and numeric response assignments hold heavy weight (minor errors cost you), but questions are clear & fair. When I struggled to complete an assignment, he was caring & supportive
I'm just wandering about where he came up with these weird questions and stuffed them into the assignment. I can understand making the homework more difficult to help students understanding better, but the assignment average is 75 and the exam average is only 60, isn't that too much? Just hope he can do a curve grading after final.
For a math course which is difficult for most people, Ryan does a great job explaining content and is always helpful to students. The course content is not easy but he does his best with tons of additional resources to help students succeed. If you have to take this course, make sure to do it with Ryan!
Ryan is a super nice guy but his tests are brutal and nothing like the practice test or practice questions. Good luck!
Prof Hamilton is an awesome teacher! His lectures are super clear, and he really cares about his students. The assignments are challenging but doable. I found unstuckstudy AI super helpful for studying and prepping. Would definitely take this class again.
He expects you know everything before you even take this course. Horrible at explaining.
I very much enjoyed Ryan's classes, though he has no formal training in education he clear learned how to instruct by experience. He was polite and helpful to the point where I think he was genuinely caring and the course was delivered in an effective way. I started to think I enjoyed math at the end of it.
He is very kind and passionate. He gives great lectures with many opportunities for engagement. His work is generally more difficult than 265, but that is to be expected. If it weren't for his horrible online videos, he would be the perfect math professor for freshmen.
Dr. Hamilton is probably the best professor I've had in uni. He explains hard concepts and makes them easy to understand. His tests are fair and he's lenient with how he marks, would absolutely take calc 3 with him again
Thought I was gonna fail the class many times, but the generous grading on some tests saved me. His tests are hard and every single time I was caught off guard by a question or two. The content for this course is hard and he could absolutely make this course significantly harder, but he doesn't and for that I am grateful. He's also super funny.
Dr. Hamiltion is one of the best mathematics professors I have had, and that's coming from a family with a math background. He makes some of the most abstract vector calculus topics like Stokes and Divergence theorem and somehow etches it into your head. Not the easiest course, but by far my favorite so far.
His tests are definitely hard and so are the worksheets, but thanks to Ryan, this course is very organized and you will get the grade you want if you put in the work. Visiting his office hours were super helpful and were it not for Ryan, this course would have been a mess. He clearly outlines his expectations and the exams are difficult, but fair.
His lectures are amazing, he provides plenty of practice, and although the exams are difficult, the grade you get linearly reflects the work you put into the course. Hamilton takes student feedback into account, and it is clearly reflected through the course. The only issue is the videos are mediocre at best when compared to his lectures.
Dr. Hamilton makes the content incredibly easy to understand. He made lectures engaging with funny anecdotes. He was very accessible outside of class, and set clear expectations. This was byfar the easiest course I've taken. I would recommend any course with him, knowing he would put in extra effort to ensure harder material is digestible.
