Summer instructor (GTA) for mth231, very good about what's expected and what we need to know. also had for a recitation, good experience.
Recitation GTA for differential equations, very good.

Hass does not care if you understand the material and his grading system is beyond vague. My suggestion is to avoid this professor.
HARD MIDTERMS!!!!!!!!! VERY HARD!!!!!!!
tries to be funny. chill. but sometimes he can get really irritated when you ask him a question. responds rudely. allows notecards on exams (which really help). wish he had a schedule. he is an okay teacher overall. (better than scarborough! lol)
I would avoid this teacher. He doesn't care how you do and doesn't seem to like questions in class. Very inexperienced... His lectures are confusing so you will have to learn everything from the book.
He's pretty cute, but honestly it's kind of annoying to have an instructor who was born a genius at the subject they teach and expect things to be crystal clear to EVERYONE.
He is a very straight forward teacher but his tests can be slightly misleading. Just make sure you review more than just the recent material and you'll do fine. Overall he knows his stuff so learning from him is easy.
Ryan doesn't have much experience. He lies to you alot about what is going to be on the midterms. Also, he really doesn't care about your success in the class. He gets upset when you ask him a question and he doesn't prepare you well for his midterms/exams. He does let you use a note card though. He really shouldn't be a teacher, he'll ruin yourGPA
Skip tons of steps in class and assumed you already have all prior knowledge required to complete a problem. Review session is terrible as he doesn't prepare anything to review for, and the stuff you review end up not being on midterm at all. hard midterms, no interest in you getting good grade.
He made me cry. BEWARE.
Ughh...I wish I knew what I was getting into. I mean, I won't lie. He is a chill guy, but dude is a jerk. Like, for cereal. Don't ever email him. He'll rip you apart. His midterms are pretty much impossible, but at least the TA's take pity with partial credit. Ugh. HASS. Oh, and whatever you do, don't go to his office hours.
The worst professor I have had so far! Not nice at all, has no social skills, and gives extremely hard tests. If it was between this professor and an online course, I would go with the online.
I'm on the verge here, I swear. I NEED him to curve my grade. My GPA, my scholarship, my life (basically) depends on whether or not he will bump my grade up. I've been rocking myself back and forth, waiting for that email. The class was hard, not gonna lie, but he isn't the worst teacher. If he is completely heartless...well, I hope he isn't...
His midterms are Unbelievably HARD! Hes very harsh when it comes to grading! and he doesnt care if you understand a thing in class! .. AVOID IF YOU WANNA PASS!
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE. Seriously, if you are looking to get a good grade in math and learn anything, Hass is not your guy. Horrible attitude towards teaching, unhelpful, and arrogant. Oh, and don't bother studying for tests because what's on them has nothing to do with his class. Tough grader, and clearly does not care about his students learning.
I'm no Einstein, but I do alright in math if I work hard at it. Hass is a tough teacher but honestly, he's just preparing you for what you need to know. He let us use notecards which really helps. No calculators allowed but that means they aren't needed. If you have a good work ethic and want to know the material, take Hass.
Bad teaching style.
His midterms/finals were just random. There were problems that had nothing to do with the subject. Questions that looked really were actually really hard and questions that looked really hard were actually really easy. Like there was this question (worth either 5% or 10% of the midterm) where he just wanted you to put the volume equation.
Ryan Hass. First time seeing him surprised me, he is young man (With a few degrees :-)) He is probably good looking (I'm a straight guy, I'm just saying). The mid-term tested the harder material. He said HE scored a 94% on it. I had studied and he was lenient with taking very little off for inaccuracies (A!). He seems like a pretty nice guy.
No. Just NO.
No. We had a test in vector where we had a problem that was worth 25% of the overall exam. How many people got that one problem right? Zero.
Don't do it. We seriously just had a test where no one got above a C out of both sections. He is only to teach for himself and he doesn't care about his students at all.
This guy teaches with only proofs and theorems. He will try to relate the examples to the theorem, however, this is not an effective teaching style for most people. Talks down to students and honestly doesn't care about your grade. Don't take from him, you will only get disappointment.
He chastises students in class for asking questions. I feel bad for him in all honesty. Don't take from him. He only teaches for people who understand math through proofs ad words. No examples really and his tests don't reflect information taught in class.
Our midterm average was a 55% and our quiz average was a 30%. He is awful.
I have been to every single class, recitation, done each assignment, and his tests are still nothing like anything we have done. I have taught myself vector calculus.
AVOID! or prepare to teach yourself everything. He's arrogant, rude and extremely misleading.
DON'T DO IT! This guy is just in it for himself. The class average on the final was not good and he promised it would look just like the practice final exam! Save yourself the time and take from someone else
Really a poor instructor, math is my favorite subject and my best subject but he made me genuinely despise this class. He is arrogant, not helpful, and misleading. We never had an average over 60% on any test or quiz, and on one quiz the average was 23%. On top of all of that he has the worst office hours possible. Take math from someone else.
The topic is tough and not a lot of people do well in the class regardless of who is teaching it. Hass does a good job of teaching the subject. The tests are not that bad if you apply your self. He is approachable for help. The main issue I with Hass is that he has a big ego and will yell at people who challenge his authority.
WOW! He comes expecting that the whole class knows Calculus or has taken it before. It's Math 241 for a reason. It is supposed to be simplified for not math intensive majors. He says that a 60% on the test is reasonable and he hesitates to curve the grades. I would steer clear of him and his class.
He faces the whiteboard when he talks, doesn't use a microphone, and literally makes no sense. I stopped going to lecture halfway through the term and started teaching myself.
He's tough, but not in an unreasonable way. People who don't like him get caught up on his seemingly mean demeanor. He can come off rude but don't hold that against him as a teacher. He's very helpful and approachable if you are genuinely interested in knowing the material.
Prof. Hass general attitude towards his student's seems to be "I don't care". Do not expect an answer key to the exams, do not expect him to work out a problem,Homework was MML if MML is malfunctioning do not expect an extension.Teacher does nothing but grade the paper and mail it back, will not help you LEARN when you get an answer incorrect, lame.
He can be a helpful dude, don't afraid of going to his office hour and getting some help. However, don't trust his study guide, his test is incredibly hard.
Hass is a pretty cool professor. He explains things really clearly and will go over examples to make sure you can understand. He has a little sense of humor that slips through sometimes. He's really young but definitely not an insecure teacher. All of our homework is online.
Seems intelligent and knows his stuff but does not understand how to teach in an online format. Can be condescending at times. Does not work out problems, doesn't provide past exams or straight forward answers. Would have been a great course had he just been more involved. Would recommend a local college to complete online math sequence.
He's tough and his humor is not for everyone but I really enjoyed his style. He went through all the proofs and examples in a clear, concise and efficient manner, exactly the way math should be. Most questions I had I was able to answer from taking notes and the ones that did remain he was very helpful with.
Although I myself struggled with the materials, when I went to Ryan for help he helped me understand them clearly. Love the organization of his lecture, as well as the outlines he provided after class online. Occasional humor makes keeps the class going. He will tell you in lecture a problem like this will be on the test. Know the unit circle!
WARNING: DO NOT TAKE A CLASS FROM THIS TEACHER! He's very blunt, unhelpful, and when you ask him a question he gives you unclear answers. His quizzes are somewhat hard and he is totally uncompromisable about your grade. Also, his "sarcasm" is completely annoying.
Avoid. This. Teacher. I have taken many classes online and have enjoyed and learned from all but this one. Instructors have varying degrees of interaction. He had none besides answering maybe two questions, and his answers came across as sort of rude.
He doesn't use blackboard, I guess that's unsettling to some students. If you do the work you can figure out what your grade is. He teaches with a lot of proofs which can be confusing but make the effort to write it down and make sense of it really helps. He's got a dry sense of humor which some people misunderstand as rude. I like him. He's hot.
Ryan is great, he answers all questions as thoroughly as possible and accepts corrections. Helpful, test correlate well with material. The class is really quick paced, DO NOT MISS A LECTURE! Recitations are extremely helpful.
I WITHDREW.
He Writes everything out on a blackboard as he speaks. Very Nice
Biggest problem is his practice tests, homework and quizzes are not consistent with the real tests. The tests are much harder and have much different problems than the student is used to seeing. Seems like a decent guy but not a great teacher. I would take the class from someone else, I wish I would have.
Ryan was not very helpful and if anything made learning Calculus harder than it already is. He teaches purely by writing on a chalkboard, and is very boring at times. He is not very approachable and is the opposite of enthusiastic or passionate about his teaching. I would not recommend him.
The only two classes I've had to retake because I failed are the two classes I've taken with him. His lectures are boring and confusing and his tests are incredibly hard.
I had taken Calc AB in high school but decided to retake 251 and 252 my freshman year just to refresh a bit. Having done this, Ryan's lectures were clear and usually easy to follow, as he translates his train of thought in words onto the blackboard. Only referred to textbook when doing examples; all HW is online. I feel as if he's approachable.
Ryan is a good dude and he is some what enthusiastic about teaching (not sure why other rated in disagreement) but his problem is that he make things harder than they should be. If you learn how to do everything in your text book the test will still be hard given he teaches things not covered in the book.
His tests are hard but he doesn't ask anything that he didn't teach. Watch out for the true false section. He teaches like he's telling a story to kids. He looks like jackson browne. But study! also he doesn't do the skills quiz so that's nice.
I wish that he taught his lectures in a more exciting manner. He always always just uses the chalkboard.
Incredibly boring teacher who nails you in tests.
Very not personal guy and tests are much harder and confusing than expected
Dr. Hass knows math very well. His tests are pretty difficult and I struggled mightily on them. He certainly makes you think outside of the box to solve problems. Lectures are okay, he just writes the information on the board and you spend more time copying then actually learning. Practice practice practice whenever you have the chance
Difficult tests when compared to other teachers of same class, same course material. Does not allow use of calculator on test. In class just writes on the chalkboard, nothing interactive or accommodative of different learning styles. No help in exam prep and no study guides. Doesn't use blackboard. REALLY wouldn't recommend.
The lecturer so hard, his midterms exams are very hard. You can pass his class, but do not think to get A or even B. You may get B- if you study every day 4 hours.
TERRIBLE professor. Lectures are boring and incredibly hard to learn from. Tests are even harder. Half of the class failed and he didn't curve it. I really don't like blaming instructors, but he was just so bad.
I think that Professor Hass has an undeservedly bad reputation. He doesn't make anything easy, but he's fair.
AWFUL professor. Do not take him for MTH 254. His tests are nothing like his lectures at all. No matter how much you think you understand what he is talking about, you will not be able to pass his tests or class.
Not a very good professor. Almost the whole class failed the first midterm. You'll understand what he says in lecture, read the book and understand, then get to the test and get a D or F. He is probably the worst teacher I've had thus far.
He does a good job explaining the course material in such a way the homework will make since and you will have no problem getting 100% on the homework. However, his tests are very very hard and he does not curve the grades at all.
Hass is actually a decent prof. His lectures are very well organized. He teaches directly from the text book. A lot of people struggle with his tests, I personally find them weirdly worded. However I plan on taking another class with him the the future. (Although I don't expect an easy A by any means).
He definitely knows his material, but he is not a good teacher. The way he does lecture is basically writing an essay in math language. It was not the right method for me or my friends.
The content of the course is easily understood. The questions on the midterm and final? Completely different story, they are 100times more complex than the taught material, so there is absolutely no practice for the tests. No matter how hard you study, nothing can prepare you for the tests.
I don't recommend taking a class with Ryan Hass. His test are ridiculously hard. His lectures consist of him writing on the board causing you to basically write a notebook full of essays. His attitude makes you feel not welcome to ask questions. He knows math but can't teach it well. The recitation teacher saved me from completely failing.
Let''s just say he didn''t help teach calculus at all. He went a mile a minute and didn''t explain the concepts which are what his exams are all about. Avoid at all cost. Not friendly or approachable either
Hass is not a bad teacher by any means, but if you want someone to hold your hand and answer stupid questions you're looking in the wrong place. The exams were hard and frequently missed questions appeared on the second midterm and the final. Bottom line; I could have gotten an A with a different prof. nonetheless Ryan's teaching was good.
Ryan is a good instructor, his lectures are organized and easy to follow, for the most part. He might seem unfriendly based on his lectures, but if you go to his office hours he will be more than happy to help you with whatever you need. His tests are difficult but not unfair. I'm almost certain that he curves grades at the end of the term.
Super nice guy, but demands a fair amount of effort from you. Of course, it's a college class, so basically I'd call it good. He makes good connections, but it's easy to fall into zoning out and just copying what he writes on the board.
This class has been a struggle with Mr. Hass. All he does is stand at the board and write and write and write and write... Everything is an example, there is nothing to reference when working on future problems. Lectures do not match homework. The tests are terribly hard too. Would not recommend -- avoid!
ummmm He practices MMA, I would suggest not skipping class. Not because of the MMA fact but because he is a HARD PROFESSOR
Ryan goes at his own pace and doesn't like to clarify often. Don't ask questions either because he really hates that
I didn't take calculus in high school but placed an 85 on the ALES test so I figured, why not? Big mistake with a professor like Hass. Lectures are run through super fast and his tests were nothing like the homework.
He's friendly and calming in class. However he is more difficult than the others. He's fair tho so really skill and drill and you will pass. He looks kinda like Jackson Browne.
Ryan Hass was the worst math teacher I've ever had. He is rude, goes through the material to quickly, gets mad if you ask questions, his tests are very difficult, and does not believe in curving the tests even when the class average was 44%. If you have never taken a calculus class prior to this you will not understand what is going on in his class
Definitely avoid if you can. He's willing to help, but isn't helpful and is condescending. I 100% believe that he really tries to trick you on his tests, he gives no study guides and will put questions on there that he knows you won't study. His examples kinda make sense but the homework and tests are impossible. VERY CONFUSING teaching style,

Sometimes he went through material faster than I could conceptualize. His tests were harder than he homework. I found his lectures covered the material well. Don't think you can get by without studying. On review day for tests, bring questions. If you do not have a strong foundation from your previous calculus classes you might struggle.
Hands down favorite professor. Lessons operate at a good pace and are entertaining. Concepts well explained with straightforward examples. Teaching style is ideal if you are somewhat good at math. Not recommended for noobs.
Ryan was one of the most rude professors I've had at OSU. He answers questions in lecture with juvenile sarcasm and criticism. My polite attempts to get help from him outside of class were met with outrageously inappropriate emails. He is not interested in helping his students in the least.
Ryan does not instruct. Rather, he talks at the class, then bullies them into siding with him. He makes rudebiased comments in class and his syllabus is intentionally vague. His tests are very tough and he does not prepare you for them- yet they are the only thing he actually grades(HWRec are gimme pts only). Makes mistakes then glosses over.
Tests are difficult. He doesn't give any kind of practice tests. The term was over 3 chapters, and he didn't have any material from the 3rd chapter on the final, but myself and many others spent most of our studying time on the 3rd chapter. However, he is very knowledgeable, and not as big of a jerk as some people have mentioned.
The materials that are covered in the lecture are fast pace so I recommend on coming to every lecture or you are going to miss a lot (I REALLY MEAN IT). For the first midterm and final exam, I studied from the textbook and the online homework (mymathlab) and I ended up with a B for my final score. Once again, GO TO LECTURE IN THIS CLASS!
Great professor, his teaching style really suited me well and I ended up really loving the class (MTH 256). Great professor who made lectures interesting and fun.
Ryan Hass can be sarcastic at times, but he's also helpful and is always willing to answer questions inside and outside of class. The tests I took in 256 were easy for me, but then again I could tell others were struggling. He tends to focus on theory, so if you learn better through examples, be sure to do the homework. He's really short.
Ryan Hass is very smart, he main discusses all about the fundamentals of what you're suppose to know, he goes through some examples and he'll answer your questions until you get understand it. His midterms and finals are all based upon your understanding and fundamentals of the class not how to solve the problems!
Ryan Hass obviously understands math, but is often rude and sarcastic to students. for no reason. If you get on his bad side, you might as well not show up to his class. His tests are challenging and require much preparation for a chance of passing. I can't recommend any teacher who is like this. Avoid at all costs.
Online class. Ryan is helpful in the lectures and discussions and puts in effort to ensure you understand the material clearly. He can be a bit sarcastic at times but nothing to be offended over. There is one midterm and one final exam, both proctored and above average difficulty--you do weill if you study.
Ryan Hass is to the Oregon State Math Department what the spoiled bratty kid who thinks he's some sort of demi-god because he can do times-tables 3 seconds faster than everyone else is to a 3rd grade class. Speaking of people in 3rd grade, Professor Hass seems to have never emotionally graduated from being petty, rude, and just overall childlike.
Ryan, is.... Not helpful and rude. If you ask a question be prepared to get an unhelpful vague answer back. If you struggle with math at all, DO NOT expect help from Ryan. Try any other professor if you can. This class was tough and confusing and Ryan does not have a good understanding of how to teach online. I ended hiring a tutor..... Good Luck
Online class. I found the provided lectures to be a little lacking and did a lot of self-study using outside sources. I found his requirements in the recitation answers to be a little overbearing, but I can see the purpose. Tests are tough, but I studied and did well. Don't take online classes if you are not willing to put in the effort.
Mathlab hw, mathlab quizes (same qs as hw), dB posts, and tests. Tests were not as tough as people say. Can get almost a 100% on everything but exams easily. Study from the book every chapter and as long as u have taken math recently it is easy. Teacher lectures not worth reading. Study from book.
Ryan is the toughest professor I have ever had. He doesn't do a good job at explaining in lectures, and tends to teach the material through theories and proofs (which doesn't appeal to me). Reading the textbook may help, but essentially Ryan and the textbook are one in the same. Tests are tough and he doesn't give study guides. Don't take his class
The final had no partial credit and it wasn't multiple choice. I would have gotten a B+, but I failed the final and ended up with a C+. His lectures were too fast to follow so I ended up leaning on the TA pretty heavily.
Geez, don't look at those other reviews! I just took 306 from Hass this F16 term and I don't agree with any of them. His lectures may seem intimidating, but he's really relaxed & so helpful if you ask questions. His quizzes are easy if you put forth effort and his exams are totally fair. It is a 300 level class though, so it's not an easy A.
Lectures were extremely fast and difficult to follow. He really exudes a lack of passion about the subject. I did not click with his teaching style or smug demeanor. He used canvas a lot and posted all the notes and a summary of each module, so that was my life line.
I thought Ryan Hass was a super fair and helpful teacher. Can't speak to how he behaves in person, but online I have found him extremely helpful and approachable. In an online course, the truth is it's more about you than the teacher. Group assignments weren't too bad. Tests were a little tough - NO FREE PASSES, DO YOUR WORK. I got an A.
I just took his math 306 class (Winter 2017), honestly, don't listen to any of the negative comments about him. He's actually an excellent professor, yes, his lectures are fast-paced, yes, his homework and exams can be tricky, but this course overall is going to be hard. Hass was incredibly engaging, and sent letters of encouragement before exams.
Good teacher, extremely helpful and actually seemed to want to help with whatever questions I had. He would walk me through the problem I had and then would show me where what he was telling me came from. Quite relatable and would make a few jokes every now and then. Very understanding as well!
Honestly, for some reason Hass get's a bad rap. I'm not sure why though. His lectures are pretty clear and his tests are very fair. He's not easy, but he's not difficult. As far as math classes go, the classes are good and are useful.
He has absolutely no passion for math or for teaching and it is blatantly apparent. Frequently makes mistakes on the board, acts in a odd childish passive aggressive manner if you try to come to office hours for help, and in general puts very little effort into teaching. I would definitely recommend taking it with a different teacher.
I found Hass to be a good teacher despite all of the negative reviews on him. He explained things thoroughly and gave good examples. His exams were fair and there were no curveballs.
Hass was a solid math professor. If I had my choice I would really rather have him do his notes on paper instead of a chalkboard, simply because it's hard to follow for me. He doesn't state anywhere or indicate in his chalkboard notes where the example is starting, where the new equation given is, or if its supplemental information.
Way better than most the math teachers I've had here. Lecture's difficult, but that's mainly because it's a challenging class. Lots of examples and the homework is definitely harder, but the homework points are still easy to get.
Pretty routine college math class. If you go to class and study, as well as utilizing office hours, you should expect an easy A. Ryan can be a bit hard to follow at times, but is receptive to questions. In my experience, most of the people who seemed hard on him weren't motivated students.
Tests require logic leaps that shouldn't really be expected of non math majors in a calculus class. I'm a student that is putting in the time and effort to truly understand content and I still get blindsided by questions that are just past the information covered in the text. MyMathLab is awful. The entire math department needs to stop using it.
I took his MATH 54 course he is teaching at UC Berkeley this summer. I had an infection, and had to miss the midterm. He used his free time to administer a makeup and grade it. His lectures are very clear, filled with tons of examples. He goes around the room and works to make sure every student succeeds. Amazing teacher, great guy!
He came and taught Math 128A (Numerical Analysis) at UC Berkeley for the summer. He was very passionate about the material, and lectures were very organized and clear. At times, he did seem to act passive-aggressively towards more surface-level questions, but I don't necessarily blame him. Just respect him, and let him teach!
Avoid this one at any cost. In the final, I was allowed to go to the restroom, and I went to the other one(very near) instead of the unsanitary one, but when I came back, he didnt allow me in and threatened me to call the campus security which is absurd, he made it clear it was because I went to another restroom, math dept agreed it was not a rule
Conti As for teaching, highly disorganized, randomly deliver materials when it comes up in his mind, be prepared to teach yourself. Although I got only less than half marks in final because his disturbance, I got full marks in midterm, I still managed B at last. Do avoid if you have a sensible mind.
The tests were pretty unfair, I had a pretty good grasp of the material but the tests really cranked it up to 11. You can have an A in the MathLab and quizzes and still be completely blindsided by the tests. As someone else mentioned, they require you to make leaps of logic that shouldn't be expected from non-math majors.
The material/quizzes/homework was fine. Im a generally pretty motivated self learner and was able to teach myself the material using the book/videos. Ryan was honestly pretty useless and his tests were insane. Two midterms and a final all of which are worth 60% of your grade. If you have the choice, dont choose Ryan.
Took his Fall Math 306 course. The lectures can be confusing and the book they require you to buy kind of sucks, but if you do the online homework, you should be able to ace the midterm and final. Lectures are posted online and his tests are straightforward.
Don't get all the hate on this page, a perfectly nice and engaging professor
Gives tons of examples, goes around the class to make sure everyone understands the material, always accessible via email and always follows up with his students when a point was incorrect/ not well understood in lecture. Friendly, personable lecturer and a great guy all around. Exams are tougher than the practice he gives, so be prepared.
Great dude, very funny, and great at explaining things. The way he taught class helped get us more involved during lectures and helped me retain a lot of information without ever looking back at my notes.
He was very confused during the lecture and did not provide the best help for problems and explaining the lecture.
Lectures were a bit disorganized, but using unstuck AI and the free textbook helped me understand the material better. Could be more helpful during office hours.
