He does not give curves on any of his exams so if you make a bad grade then its bad. All of his powerpoints are only the images from the textbook and he only explains those images. He'll tell you to study the questions from the textbook's launchpad but none of those questions will be on the exams. Makes BLY 121 more difficult then it should be.
If you love life, do not take Littlefield. I will either make an A- or a B in this class, BUT he is my toughest professor by far. If you do take him, pay little attention to his "study" guides. Nearly all of his test questions are critical analysis. A majority of the class fail his midterms. The last midterm we had the mean was 57. Not easy.
He complicates this course. The questions on tests do not follow the study guides. It is best to read and take notes from the book, rather than try to memorize the study guides. It is nearly impossible to take notes from the lectures, because there are a lot of details that he covers too quickly. He just uses pictures from the book.
This was the worst class ever. I ended up dropping it. He was super hard, and I ended up dropping it. I do not recommend him to anyone!!
If you like biology do not take him! He's is making general biology much harder than usual. all of his exams are difficult because he expects you to really analyze the questions. the study guides and questions on the launchpad that goes with the book will only help you study a little bit but other than that, you really have to drill the material.
Dr. Littlefield is new at USA. He is learning how to teach as this is his first real teaching job. His tests are mainly processes. Know the processes and you will do fine on the test. He does scale and it gave me an A. His lectures are not helpful. I even skipped a majority of them so far. Its not worth waking up to go to them. Don't take him.;
Dr. Littlefield is very hard. His notes are just pictures from the book. He is helpful if you go to him. He gives you a study guide and it sometimes helps but not all of the time. I reccomend not taking him if you are a biology major or want a good grade.
Not a good teacher. The test make no sense he is vague and rambles. A nice guy but not a good teacher he assumes everyone is a Biology major and treats a 100 level class like a 300 level
He is very nice guy ! He tries to help you if you go to him at his office hours ! His test are SUPER HARD if you did not study , so make sure u read the book and understand the materials very well in order to do good in the exams ! He give a study guide which is basically the HW and the quizzes questions , but don't focus on it because may be 2 or 3 questions will come from it. He scale the tests . But I recommended another teacher than him because he is not a very good teacher when he teach.
I don't understand why the ratings are so low. Littlefield gives you all the material for you to do well on his test AND he scales like crazy. No, this is not an easy class, no he is not an easy professor, but he does give you the information you need to do well. Most people have B's in the class, so I dont understand the problem. I have an A.
He is a very nice guy & understands that there is a huge amount of material to learn. If you go to him during office hours, he offers a lot of ideas for studying. He is also very understanding about taking makeup tests. He sends back very detailed emails when you email him. He is very passionate about Biology and an enthusiastic new teacher.
I will say that this class was pretty hard! It is not Dr. Littlefields fault, though! He is very willing to help, you just can't be lazy in this class. He's a very smart guy and really loves biology. Just go to his office hours or email him if you need help. There's also an SI. And whoever said he doesn't scale tests, thats wrong because he does.
Dr. Littlefield was a nice guy don't get me wrong but I feel like I learned nothing from his class. He was hard to pay attention to mainly because he talked about the subject so in depth. He would be a great upper level bio teacher but it was terrible to take him for gen bio he assumes you are a biology expert. His test questions were pretty hard.
He's very disorganized and requires you to read it through all chapters in the book for online quizzes. he give study guide 2 or 3 days before the test as well as the giving notes on short notice.
He needs to realize he is not at John Hopkins anymore, he is in South Alabama.... He needs to teach to our level.
No a very good teacher. Would be an excellent lab teacher. Almost seems like he is too smart for his own good! The amount of people in class on test days are twice the amount in class on regular days. Id say its because the classes are not very helpful. Overall he is a very nice guy though.
Dr. Littlefield is not even close to being an educator. It's frustrating to pay money for a class and have someone as clueless as he is attempting to teach. He is definitely knowledgable about cell bio, but being knowledgable about a subject doesn't qualify one to teach that subject. Avoid this professor unless you enjoy teaching yourself.
His class was very stressful. The only reason I went to class was to do the clicker questions. BUT the guy scales EVERYTHING! I failed half of my exams and I still came out with an A. He scales every test and even the final grade. His class is hard, no doubt. You wont have to worry about failing his class if you go see him.
Great Guy
AVIOD AT ALL COSTS. This is the worst professor I have ever had. He is too smart for his own good and the only grades are quizzes, which sucks. I would rather die than take his class again.
Little field is an awesome teacher he just doesn't know how to dumb it down
He is an okay teacher but he can not teach at all. I mean he can teach but he does it in such a way that you think he is talking to an esteemed high tech professor. I may be best not to take him
He was all in all a very good professor. He can be confusing at some points but he is happy to help with any questions you may have.
In the beginning of the semester, I thought I was going to DIE. BUT he does give a bonus point puzzle every week and curves a LOT! :) Actually go to his office hours at least once (talk about your grade too) and he will help you with anything! Must have (online textbook better than hardback) LaunchPad & Clickers. Tests and Mini's are HARD.
Dropped the two lowest quiz grades and he believes in the curve. Quizzes are all vocab and he sends out crosswords to help.
Dr. Littlefield is a really great person, but not the best at explaining difficult concepts (which there are quite a few of in bio 121). Make sure you go to class and participate in the clicker questions as well as do the extra credit puzzles he gives each week! Those are easy things that will help your grade. He curves alot, even the final grade!
Even though he has a good personality he is way to smart to be teaching lower biology courses. I attended every class and participated in all clicker questions and every puzzle and still made Cs on all my exams and Ds on my mini quizzes. only way I passed was with the extra credit point each week and grading scale on the exams.
Littlefield is very kind and VERY smart, and it definitely shows. His tests are very difficult (mostly little details from the book, so you do have to read) and he's not the best speaker (although he told us he knows this already and is continually trying to work on it). But he gives TONS of bonus points and scales and he's always willing to help.
Took Cell Bio in the Summer semester as a condensed, month-long, hair-on-fire course. If you need to or must get an A, be prepared to work very, very hard. He doesn't curve, but he scales the final grades for statistical congruence. Moreover, he gives a very reasonable amount of extra credit opportunities. Gaff them off at your own peril.
Dr. Littlefield is great professor! His lectures can be a little boring because he does take up every second of the class lecturing but he tries his best to make it entertaining with games, drawings, and group work. His tests are quite tough and you need to ask him what to study for. He will help you as much as you want! He cares about his classes
Dr. Littlefield is a nice man, however, his class is very difficult. He expects you to know every single detail about everything. His exams are extremely specific, therefore you must read the text book word for word to do well. He does not explain concepts well. I feel like I am in a high level class. He does scale but not until grades are bad.
I'll just add to what everyone else here has said... Do. Not. Take. Littlefield. He makes biology a boring hell and turns what could be a 1 hour lab into a 3 hour session of rambling on about nothing.
Not many people liked Dr. Littlefield that much, but they would definitely say that he could be worse. I on the other hand really liked his class.
If you want to have a stressful semester, be sure to take Littlefield! His lectures are too lengthy and he goes way too in detail. His exams expect you to know every little concept and more. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone who is interested in passing. He also doesn't post the study guide answers until the night before the exam, super late.
Littlefield is a GENIUS, BUT his lectures are very uninteresting. He gives a couple extra credit assignments, so make sure you do them. Reading the book is absolutely essential to this class. You will not learn or retain much from the lectures. I am not very good at biology, but I basically had to teach myself. Be prepared to stress and work hard.
He is a great person, but I didn't necessarily enjoy lab. I thought the quizzes were a little over the top difficult for lab, plus the quiz grades are your only grades. He did help us out though by taking up packets as part of our quiz grade and some bonus at the end. It's definitely doable, just be sure to study the packets and lab information.
Very easy if you took AP Bio in high school. Need to read the book. Regular reading quizzes online. Gives extra credit towards the end of the semester and scales at the end.
I would skip out on his class, it is very difficult. He is a nice person, but his class will leave you crying in the library every night. He does scale the exams, but I still ended up failing the majority of them. Attendance isn't mandatory, but it boosts your grades with the clicker questions.
Dr. Littlefield is a boring lecturer, and half of his vocabulary consists of "ums." His tests are difficult (usually about details from the book) and he scales only if the average is below 70. The book is must-have, and I would recommend reading the chapters twice. The overall grade consists of 4 tests, a final, and a few take home assignments.
I will never take Professor Littlefield again. DO NOT DO THIS TO YOURSELF. He isn't good at explaining the material and his tests are impossible.
Not a good teacher, very nice, but does not know how to teach. His quizzes are impossible and his lecture before lab is a hour long.. no exaggeration!
He is extremely hard to understand. You can tell he is extremely intelligent and does not seem to realize that his students are struggling. His final was one of the hardest tests I have ever taken. Even other professors tell you not to take him.
If you take him for biology lab, his quizzes are extremely hard!
Nothing on his tests are on the study guides! He tells you to study from one thing and then puts the complete opposite on the test. I barely made it out alive and I studied so hard! Do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs. He is a nice guy but if you dont want to kill GPA dont take him.
Littlefield is one of the worst teachers Ive ever had. He takes labs way to seriously. The quizzes are almost impossible, and his lectures are so vague that it is hard to comprehend what is going on. DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM. EVER.
I had Dr Littlefield for lab, and it was a very tough class. I can only imagine how his lectures are. He usually did not explain things clearly, and expected us to know most of the material before coming to class. Expect to stay for the ENTIRE scheduled time, we rarely ever got out before 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Dr. Littlefield is an extremely intelligent man who is a good guy outside of class. This will be the hardest class you will ever take in your life. If you skip class you definitely will not pass.
If you can find another instructor to take for biology lab, I would highly suggest it. If his lab section is all that fits into your schedule, it isn't all that bad. His prelab lectures are way too long and the lab quizzes are pretty nit picky. If you study his lecture powerpoints and the diagrams from the labs, youll do fine.
This class was the hardest class I have taken!! He does not email you back when you need to make up work. His quizzes are nothing like any of his lectures or lab handouts. Do Not take his class!!!
Don't believe the scary rumors about this guy. He's harmless and his quizzes truly aren't that bad. Take notes during his lectures (if you can attention long enough - they are way too long and boring) and study them as well as the lab handout. I would study both of these for an hour before class and do fine. He's weird but easily passable
Do not take this class. Dr. Littlefield spends the entire 2 hours and 30 minutes in lab every week, and almost all of that time is spent with him rambling on about things we dont need to know about. Very boring lectures with lots of ums and pauses. I will never take a class with him again.
Don't take this class. His quizzes are impossible. One week the quiz will be based off the powerpoint and the next based off the lab. He gives no heads up as to which will be on the quiz. His questions are way too specific and in depth for a bio lab. He keeps you the entire 2 hours and 30 minutes, which an hour and a half is nothing but lecture.
I would strongly suggest not taking him for lab. His quizzes are extremely tough, one week the information on the quiz is on the lab and the next week its on the lecture and ppt. Zero consistency. Quizzes are the only grade in the class, the lab packets you work hard on don't even get taken up for a grade half the time. Class is always 2 1/2 hours
I would highly recommend NOT taking this course with Dr. Littlefield. He was not very clear in directions and almost everyone in my class received a C or D. He didn't put the grades in until the very last minute. His test are all fill in the blank and very hard. DO NOT take this course with him!!!
Dr. Littlefield is very smart but he is a terrible lab teacher. His quizzes are very difficult, with zero consistency in content. He lectures for about the first hour and a half of class, which means you have a short time to do your lab, and will ALWAYS be in class the full two and half hours. He also takes a really long time to put grades in.
DO NOT TAKE HIM!! AVOID AT ALL COSTS!! He ONLY takes grades from quizzes and they are never consistent. He doesn't care about if his students pass or not and almost always makes us feel stupid for asking questions. He is only gives bonus if you make a 100 on a quiz. Takes up the whole class talking so you have hardly anytime to complete labs.
He is an excellent instructor! Hard, but exceptionally fair. He has high expectations for his students. You will leave this course with a good undertstanding of the concepts. He is bad about posting grades in a timely manner, but willing to speak with you outside of class for any academic needs. I have greatly benefited from his class.
This is by far one of the hardest courses I have ever taken, and he is not very good at teaching it. He definitely knows his stuff, but he doesn't teach more than reading off of slides. I've never worked so hard for a course in my life. He shouldn't be teaching such a heavy course.
He does not make resources available on a timely basis, especially when it comes to pre-lab quizzes. The quizzes themselves are very inconsistent. In class, he doesnt adequately explain what he expects from your weekly assignments until you've already turned in at least 3. Spends too much time talking, sometimes stopping us from finishing the lab.
I took this professor's lab which was alright. He is very slow to return lab reports, it was a 3-4 week wait and because of this the class didn't know our mistakes for the first few reports and on top of that the professor hardly ever explained what he expected on the reports, but be very specific and write in complete sentences.
We were a class that were guinea pigs to the CER form process. He took about 2 weeks to give those back, for example Week 1s CER form was given back and entered in the grade book when we were handing in CER form 3. I didnt like how 1point/10 taken off the CER form meant a whole letter grade off the form, meaning your grade suffered a lot.
Good teacher. Will favor you if you participate. Had him for lab and loved him. He wants you to learn and hes very nice about it. Will make jokes in class. Grading criteria clear. Gives lots of feedback and will help you out a lot.
Dr. Littlefield is a great person, terrible teacher. I would not recommend him. It's obvious he knows what he is talking about, but he teaches as if we should already know the material. He gives many extra credit opportunities and sometimes gives worksheets in class for extra points, but in the end my grade was not affected significantly.
Dr. Littlefield is great as a person but leaves something to be desired as a professor. His class is hard, specifically his tests. He will expect you to understand everything very in-depth, even if he didn't teach it. READ THE BOOK! As smart as he is, he's not good at clarifying difficult concepts. He scaled our grades at the end.
I have had Dr. Littlefield for 3 classes now (not by choice). He is a HORRIBLE teacher, which is sad because he's a pretty nice person. You will not pass if you study just his powerpoints. You HAVE to read the book!!!! its a must. If you can find a way to take another teacher, do it. He might or might not scale the class. GOOD LUCK
Never in my academic career have I had a professor with much a high failure rate. He is not one to encourage nor is he there to actually make sure his students learn. I worked so hard and could not get ahead along with 73% of the class.
Dr. Littlefield is a nice person, but a horrible teacher. I do NOT recommend his class. His grading is inconsistent and he grades EXTREMELY hard on lab reports. If you miss a class you will not be allowed to make up the lab or turn in a lab report. He lectures for the majority of the class so completing the lab in time is very difficult.
He knows the information but does not convey it well. Not a great teacher and his test are extremely hard. Take another professor.
Worst class Ive ever had. He tried to cram so much info into 50 min classes and never finished his lectures/powerpoints in time for tests. The info he failed to teach he would tell us just go over this on your own at home because its still going to be on the test. Plan your lectures accordingly man. Never again will I take a class he teaches.
He is a nice person, but not a good instructor. Lectures for most of the lab, grading is not clear, and neither are assignments and their due dates. I love labs but this one is just plain boring. Take another lab instructor if you want to actually enjoy this lab!
this man sucks. he uses analogies to explain everything which makes it even more confusing. he is also very boring and just reads from the slides. it almost seems like he barely knows the subject matter himself.
Dr. Littlefield is a genuine man but expects too much from his students. His expectations for undergraduate students is that of a graduate level class. His lectures are long and boring. His PowerPoints are vague as well as his lectures. You MUST read the book. Basically teach this class to yourself. He is lost most of the time.
Dr. Littlefield is really nice but he just is not a good professor. His lectures do not really help at all. I suggest reading each chapter multiple times to succeed as the tests have questions about the tiniest details. Attendance is really only needed on days where he hands out in-class assignments.
I took him online and it was pretty easy. It is basically just a lab a week due on Sunday nights. One thing that was a little annoying was that he did not put all the lab grades in until after the semester was over.
I have never met a teacher that cared so little for his students. He seems like a great person but will get mad at you if you say anything negative about the class. I'm taking it hybrid and it is the worst class I have ever taken. So disorganized and never puts grades in. Can't teach to save his life. Read the book and hopefully, you'll pass.
This man made my anxiety rise so high at 8 am I thought I was going to die. He is so unorganized, late and very unprofessional in every single way. I wouldnt want anyone to take him unless you have a death wish. He doesnt communicate at all is very last minute for everything. He doesnt lecture well and is all over the place when he does.
He is actually not bad, but also not the best. If you end up with him do not freak out he is really not that hard. He is a very nice guy (weird), just a little scatterbrained. I would say he is just okay due to his very late grading. He did not grade anything too difficult though.
Mr. Littlefield is a great teacher. He tends to go a little too in depth with the material which takes up a lot of class time but that's because he just really loves biology. He grades the post-lab reports pretty hard so it is essential to look at feedback from past reports in order to make a good grade. Overall would take his class again.
Great class. Very interesting. Despite Dr. Littlefield having never taught this course before he was able to keep things light and really focused on a hands on learning approach, which I appreciated, while implementing small research portions here and there. Don't be afraid to ask questions in the beginning!!
Professor Littlefield was nice, but he goes on tangents when giving information and it takes a while. Automatically graded assignments were the only things I had in Canvas, so I didn't know how well I was doing until the end. The class wasn't hard, just follow feedback. Ask questions and he'll give the answer he wants on the lab report if you do.
He is a very tough grader which makes it hard to succeed in class. However he is very passionate about the material and if you put in effort you will do good.
Dr. Littlefield is caring, but the lab is a little difficult and he's a tough grader. He is willing to help on assignments you do not understand. He sometimes talks a little too much to where we don't have enough time to finish the labs and would have to stay back. He shows us how to do post-lab reports, which helps a lot.
He was only there for one of the classes and helped us out with a problem we were having, but otherwise it was a TA instructing the class and grading everything. It was sometimes tough to do the post labs because even with following the rubric, points were taken off for things that were not specified in said rubric. The labs are organized well.
I wouldn't recommend taking this professor to anyone. No matter how hard you try, it wont be good enough even when you are following the rubric that HE provides. He is always cocky and never understanding, he always mocked me or made fun of me . He spends the whole class on tangents talking about information that is not even needed. DO NOT TAKE.
Although his class can be tough, talking to him individually will make you see that he cares greatly about his students. I spoke to him towards the end of the semester and he gave me guidance on writing post labs so I could pass. He helped me tremendously, which he had no obligation to do. You will do well if you give his class the effort.
I now understand why this professor's rating is so low. He is not a good professor by any means. He says um after every other word, gives boring lectures, reads straight from the slides, and his exams are difficult. He does not drop any exam and nothing he teaches is on the exam. Do not take this professor.
This teacher is terrible. He would not review before exams. Never answered emails and was overall very bad at his lectures and making the class understandable. Very little grades which made his exams even worse and did not give curves or drop grades. NEVER TAKE HIS CLASS
He would go on long tangents about unrelated or confusing metaphors that made little sense in relation to the topic, would pause or say "um" a lot, skipped over important chapters and expected us to teach ourselves, was late constantly, gave very little homework, no study guides, and only lots of bonuses when the class average was under 50 on exams
I don't know how he makes his exams. I could memorize every slide from every chapter and still make a C on the exam. The only reason I barely got an A is because he gave extra credit. Does not curve exams, is late to every class, does not respond to email, and makes every assignment incredibly difficult. Go to class, there are surprise assignments.
He's a nice guy but his lectures are hard to understand, and his test are application.
Littlefield is a good lab teacher, not a lecture teacher. He's late to almost every class, we only do slideshow PowerPoint and we don't go into too much detail on the subject. He does post his slideshows on Canvas luckily, but still doesn't do a good job talking about the chapters well. Each exam was harder than the next. Don't take him for lecture
Doesn't teach just reads slides and goes off on irrelevant tangents so we never finish content on time. The exams have nothing to do with the book or what we learn in class, our class never averaged a passing grade on an exam. You don't get to see what you missed on the exams but are told to "reflect" on what you missed. lots of ec for us to pass
He had TA's causing some of our grades from the beginning of the semester were still not put in. His exams had absolutely NOTHING to do with lectures and the averages were all 50% or below. The final was half cumulative, but we never got our previous exams back to see what we missed. He was 30 minutes late to the final and then gave us attitude.
If you have the option to take another professor do it. He is very unorganized in all areas like his lectures and assignments. He was always late and never got through all the material. He was even late for our final and when we got in there had to sit 30 mins for him to print exams out when we should have started already. He was also rude to us.
I did not enjoy this course at all. Dr. Littlefield is a nice person, but I could not keep up with him. He was always late to class and he would always go over class time. His exams were hard, but he thankfully scaled them and gave some bonus and extra credit. Honestly, if it wasn't for the homework and extra credit I would not have passed.
Tests are multiple choice, but questions were worded confusingly, came from one-off mentions in the book, and had little to do with lecture material. He is disorganized, nearly unreachable outside of class, and overall a poor instructor. If you take this course, go to lectures for possible bonuses and study only from the textbook, not his lectures.
cell biology was awful with him - he would lecture but then get off topic or would give us confusing analogies to remember concepts by. tests were multiple choice but with scratch-off, similar to a lottery ticket. there needs to be a different professor to teach cell biology.
Professor Littlefield's class can be challenging, but engaging with him individually can make a big difference. Utilize resources like Unstuck AI alongside the free textbook to navigate the labs and post-reports effectively.
