Helpful videos, a very good teacher that explains thoroughly, exams are fair game
Homework and quizzes are easy and his lectures are generally helpful and entertaining. Get ready to do a lot of work outside class, but with the MLC you should be fine. Exams however are ridiculous and they are harshly graded. Don't feel shocked if you see questions on the exam you never learned. Otherwise he's chill.
This professor genuinely cares about his students. He is always available for help and does his best to make the class interesting. He made our class Harry Potter themed! He goes over the material thoroughly and the level of difficultly of his quizzes are indicative of the exams. One couldn't hope to have a better professor for this class!
Take this class
Maccombs was honestly the best professor I had this semester. He genuinely wants everyone in the class to get a 4.0 and he does a wonderful job explaining the material of the course. He is always available if you need extra help. If you have him for MTH132 consider yourself lucky.
Honestly best professor I've had at MSU. He is very well organized and gives his class all he can to make sure we succeed on the exams.
Professor Maccombs is awesome! He makes great videos and really tries to make sure everyone succeeds. Go to lecture and do the WeBWork and you'll get an A. Maccombs and his TAs are available all the time for extra help too!
Easy 4. if you do all the notes, attend class, go to the MLC, and actually study for the exams. He's pretty straight forward in his expectations, and if you're willing to put in the work its not a hard class. All the notes are on youtube, and he's very clear at explaining the concepts. He genuinely cares about his students and it definitely shows.
Best professor I have had here at MSU. There is a pre-class video and video check/ easy mini quiz online that count for quiz points. So if you stay on top of your pre class work you will automatically get 3 points on your weekly quiz. Lecture attendance is not necessary if you keep up with the posted notes, its easy to do well without showing up.
Ryan Maccombs is a math god. You are lucky if you take his class. He is too good for all of us.
ive taken many math classes and even from a year ago I remember ryan he is definitely a really good teacher, really easy to understand AND he puts all the notes online. he also is very willing to help and take questions during class
Prof Maccombs is absolutely dedicated to helping his students succeed. His lectures are clear and well guided and he even puts in the time and effort to make great math videos for help.
The best teacher to have for my first calc class in college
Very good professor, this guy know what he is talking about.
Hands down the best professor Ive ever had for any subject. He loves what hes teaching and he gives out plenty of extra resources to help students succeed. Also, lecture attendance isnt mandatory and the exact notes we take in class are posted online, if your not invested in a 4.0 you dont need to go to class.
he is super awesome. hard class but if you really study you will do well. he's the best prof for this class DO NOT take it with anyone else.
Amazing Professor, I had a hard time learning the material and went to every one of his office hours. And no matter how many stupid questions i asked, he sat there and explained the concepts until we found a method I understood. Super patient and the best teacher this school has to offer. Not to mention Harry Potter fan and he makes class fun!!!
Very good at explaining the topics
Professor Maccombs is very easy to approach. Extremely friendly and will, in no doubt, help you in Calculus 2. Aside from lecture, he also makes the video notes for calc 2 and has his students join piaza, which is a discussion forum to ask eachother questions, and he frequently checks up on that site. He makes sure we know whats going on in class.
It's a hard class for sure. He's the professor at MSU to have for this class. Attendance is not mandatory but it is important to attend every class and recitation. 3 exams and a final. Quizzes every other week. Webwork due every few days. It is a fast-paced class.
Fantastic teacher and even better guy. Attendance isn't mandatory but the class moves fast so just show up. Going to office hours is very helpful because he cares about each student.
The material is hard for some but he shows genuine passion for what he does.
Super organized, absolutely no surprises. Was a very difficult course would not have wanted to take it with anyone else.
If you want to succeed in ANY math class he teaches, TAKE HIM! He's honestly the best professor
Tough grader. I took this class twice. Both times with Ryan. He is a great teacher. He really cares about teaching math and it shows. Hands down the best professor at MSU. I would recommend taking him for all of your math classes.
Taking MTH234 as an online course due to COVID actually helped because I could attend the lecture with the profs I liked the best and could attend Ryan's office hours which were always very good. Highly recommend going to his office hours or even emailing him for help. Very nice and you can totally tell he loves what he does.
Absolutely wonderful, content was very hard; however, I felt that no one could have done a better job.
Ryan Maccombs is a gem of a professor. He's welcoming and invites questions at all times. He answers tons of questions on the class forum as well, and generally seems to care deeply about his students. If you ever get the opportunity to have him as a professor, take it. The class is very hard but Ryan makes Calculus II bearable, which is a feat.
Participation for a grade, textbook used for extra practice (optional). Always took time to answer student questions, even if he had to repeat what he just said. Ryan is the best calc professor at MSU, take his class if you can, you won't regret it. Just be ready to put in the work needed to pass.
Daddy Ryan is an absolute hoss of a professor. He is very enthusiastic and good at explaining math concepts in a way that is linear and simplifies things down to first principles. He makes math lectures about as interesting as a math lecture can be. His class is by no means easy but also not unreasonably hard like some professors.
The best professor I have had so far at MSU. Pre-class videos essentially taught all necessary content. The class was difficult but with help rooms, office hours, and great teaching the class was manageable. It was clear Maccombs really cared and tried. He wasn't just another clown on tenure.
Ryan Maccombs is the absolute GOAT. The man records videos for each section and throws them on the tube. He also hosts asynchronous lectures that go over the tougher questions in the section. Lecture attendance not required if you watch the youtube vids. The material is hard, I went to MLC or CoRE 3 days a week to secure the bag. Gotta work for it.
Ryan Maccombs was a phenomenal professor. He was always ready to answer any questions and would always go into enough detail so that you would understand. He is extremely nice and his lectures are great. The class itself is brutal, but Maccombs is so competent that even someone like me who's awful at math can pass. Best math prof at MSU PERIOD!
Had him for calc 2 and 3 - safe to say this man is an absolute prodigy of a professor! Im convinced professor Ryan could teach calc to a chimp. He does basically everything right from great lectures to being accessible outside of class. You will learn so much in his class if you put in the work. Easily the best math teacher I've ever had.
Professor Maccombs has a variety of materials available to help students succeed. He creates guided notes to go with his videos and lectures, making it easy to study for the exams. I took him for MTH 133 and am now taking him for MTH 234 because he is that good.
By far the best math professor at MSU. Attendance isn't actually required because all of the lectures are posted online right after class is over, so if you miss a class, don't worry too much. The classes are very hard, but Professor Maccombs makes it a lot better. I wish he would always be my math teacher. Just remember to stay on top of homework!
Great videos and lectures, very clear.
Ryan's back must hurt from carrying the MSU math department on his BACK. Here's a disclosure: I have never actually had him assigned as my professor in either Calc 1 or Calc 2. He posts his lectures and amazingly organized notes that you use to follow along with him, on D2L, and youtube. Without both of these things, I would never have passed.
Forget mathematician, Ryan Maccombs is a math-magician. A true renaissance man; there is not a single person on this planet that this guy could not teach calculus too. Professor Maccombs definitely has an IQ of at least 160 because out of all the math professors I've had (a lot of them), none have been able to come remotely close to his ability.
I have never given a professor a rating before because I have never felt that strongly about them or their class. HOWEVER, I had to make one for Ryan Maccombs. He has single handedly taught me my last two math classes from using his online lectures (calc 1 and 2). I haven't been to math class in 2 semesters but his videos made me 4.0 both.
Genuinely the best instructor I've had at MSU. This instructor's supplemental videos and live lectures have made mastering Calc I-III, an extraordinarily challenging feat, far more achievable. His dedication to breaking concepts down and explaining everything in a way that is accessible to any person is mind-blowing. Truly a gem.
The ideal calculus professor. By far the best professor I've had in math at MSU and one of the best professors period. Something about the way he teaches makes lectures engaging and keep you paying attention.
I was in Algebra 2 extended and hated math senior year of high school but thanks to Dr.Maccombs's wonderful lectures I breezed through calculus 1-3 and got admitted to the college of engineering. Unlike all of the droning monotone robots you've probably had before, he actually sounds like he enjoys being there and knows how to explain things!
Ryan carries the entire math department on his back. He is amazing at explaining complicated concepts that other professors just glaze over. I didn't attend a single in person lecture last year, I just watched his videos and now I am taking 234 in his online section. Even other "good" math profs won't get you as far as Dr. Maccombs and his vids.
I absolutely love Dr. Maccombs. I have been watching his videos for calculus 1 and 2 and owe all my success to him. He is fantastic. Unmatched. a true genius.
Fantastic professor, really makes calc 3 a breeze if you watch all of his lectures.
If new to calculus, watch the video lessons and do the homework as the homework will help make the lesson you watch make more sense. Tests and exams are somewhat easy, there may be some questions from the homework on the tests and exams that have different numbers or wording. Summary: Class will not give hard questions and or make you suffer.
If new to calculus, watch the lesson videos, still not understand, do homework, homework make lesson videos click and help you understand the lesson. Tests has few questions, exams have few more questions than tests. Some homework questions may be on test and exams. Summary: Class is straight forward and Ryan Maccombs will carry you to an A.
I took this online so I watched his lectures before the recitation later in the week. Quizzes every week and a test after every two quizzes. Homework due Tues, Thurs, Sat. Class got to the point that the lectures didn't explain every hw problem, so I had to resort to piazza and eventually chegg. Overall not a bad experience, but a hard class.
This man quite literally carries the entirety of MTH234 on his back. His lectures are legendary and the provided notes templates are a ticket to success so long as you actually do them. The grading on the online quizzes and tests was extremely unfair/tough, but you can still get a good grade.
Watch this guy's YouTube lectures to pass MTH 133. Trust me. Ryan Maccombs is an absolute beauty.
best professor ever he does an amazing job making you understand very complicated material
He's an awesome guy and gives amazing lectures. There's a note packet for every chapter and that's just super helpful for learning. However, the only thing I believe is insufficient for this class are some of the class notes, and hw/recitation just doesn't match up. What's included in the hw doesn't covered by what he taught in the lecture.
Great videos and explanations, never met him in person but was very likeable and funny in the lectures
Absolutely amazing at explaining everything, his lectures make it super easy to succeed in the class.
I didn't officially have him. I had some Greek professor that I could not understand and I started out basically failing... stopped going and only watched Ryan's lectures and my grade shot up and I did well in the course. If I started calculus over I would chose to only have him as my professor.
Literally the best math professor ever! His lecture and explanations are so clear and any doubts you have will be respectfully answered by him!!
I felt very uneasy talking to him. I felt like there was no help for me outside of the MLC. I learnt more calculus three from a class on introductory electromagnetics. Although he is a very caring individual and inspirational too. It is because of him and a pep talk he gave me that I am now majoring in Mathematics as well.
Had a different Prof for MTH133, but used his pre-class videos to learn the content instead of the real lectures I was given and they were excellent.
By far the best professor in the math department. He is extremely knowledgable and his guided notes and videos make the class feel very organized. He explains very challenging material in a way that is easy to understand. If I had the opportunity I would 100% take his class again.
If you've taken Calc 1 and 2, it's very similar to those. Lectures 3 days a week and about 2 instructional videos as well. Will always go into detail if students are confused and was always active in answering student questions on Piazza. If you have the option to take this prof, DO IT! Best prof in the math department
Maccombs is a great instructor. There are open paper notes for all quizzes and exams, which has been a huge improvement from calc 1. If you can, pick this professor!
This prof has the BEST lectures on Youtube. You can learn all of the material independently through watching the videos on your own time. The chapters are accurate and line up with any professor that you take Calc III with. You missed a lecture? RM has your back. Professor that you have isn't your learning style? RM has your back. Best prof ever!!
Although I do not like calculus at all, Prof. Maccombs was excellent at explaining and helping during lectures, in private meetings/communications, etc. His course structure was very helpful for me (taking notes ahead of time and then doing practice problems in class). I still absolutely believe that I could have 4.0'd the course if I tried harder!
very nice and kind.great lectures compared to other professors who teach this course. He is open for office hours often. sometimes didnt answer my questions properly and was confusing at times especially the harder ending units. tests and quizzes were annoying because of theory questions or t/f can be very confusing, easy to get those wrong.
He is the best, he knows how to teach Calculus. I hated doing online classes before but doing Calc 2 with his videos wasn't bad at all, some problems are hard to do and it's not the easiest class, but he definitely makes it easier to understand.
Super nice guy who can actually teach calculus. He is not difficult to understand and the pre lecture videos are excellent. I found myself using his videos when I had another professor in Calc 3 because of this.
Amazing teacher
The goat, I used his videos instead of my professor's lectures.
You cant escape from his online tutorial If you hear his sound from YouTube, you know you are doing well His sound makes you feel relax and confident when you are facing tons of math assignments
One of the best math professors. Has videos online to help you learn the content better and the lectures are at a good pace to understand. The only thing is the exams especially the quizzes are hard but having open notes is helpful. Answers fast on Piazza and answers any follow-up questions. Available for help on Zoom. Please take this professor!
amazing teacher very passionate and clear when teaching
Maccombs is an amazing professor for such a difficult course. He is easily accessible and cares about his students.
This man is infamous amongst engineering students at MSU. Everyone loves him and he got me through one and a half years of college calculus. Do anything you can to get in his class.
He is an amazing professor and thoroughly explains everything. However, Calc 3 is a TOUGH class and prepare to be doing tons of homework and studying for it. There are quizzes almost every week to make sure you're on top of the material. Midterm was especially difficult.
I did not even have him as my professor, but his lectures are what taught me all of Calc 2 and got me an A. Doing his video notes and webwork prepares you well for tests.
Maccombs is a nice prof. He helps when you need help, and he makes videos that you can watch on YouTube that thoroughly explain the content, and what you need to do to be successful in this class. To me, Calc 2 was extremely difficult. I got a 2.0 and I studied very hard. Maccombs is great, the content/class itself is not.
Fantastic professor. Teaches content very well. While Calc 3 is inherently difficult, This teacher did a great job at teaching it in the best way. Would absolutely recommend if you can learn asynchronously
Amazing professor, has guided notes that you can print out, and listens to in-class questions. You do need to watch his pre-class videos as that will teach you what you will end up doing in class. He did recommend a textbook but it is not necessary. Attendance isn't necessary (he posts recordings on his youtube), but definitely show up to class.
I never actually took Ryan Maccombs' class. I was in another Calc 3 section but after averaging a 1.0 I stopped going and only watched and attended Ryan Maccombs' lectures. I ended with a 3.0 and I will never be more grateful to anyone more than I am to this professor. He saved my grade.
I got a C+ in Calc 1-2 back in high school, and was very anxious about taking Calc 3 after years of no math. Somehow, he manages to make Calc 3 fun & has a teaching style that makes the material intuitive. I loved the class so much I changed my major to math--never would have seen myself getting an A+ in math; can't recommend this professor enough!
This guy is the goat, only reason I learned calc 1-3 extremely well.
Absolutely phenomenal at teaching math. Math isn't my strong suite, but his lectures are clear and made the class manageable. The quizzes are a little challenging, but the exams are overall ok. Best math teacher I've ever had. Homework is relatively easy, with only 2-3 assignments a week composing of around 8-12 questions. Don't fall behind.
Dr. Maccomb's lectures were some of the best math lectures I've ever experienced. I took this class online, so I never interacted with the guy in person, but he was very accessible by email when I had questions. Cares a lot about his students and wants you to succeed!
